My Favorite Place
One of my favorite places in the world that has affected my life the most is my
childhood town and my home in Mobile, Alabama. I grew up in a beige, two story
house that sits on a long yard backed up to Dog River. My house is about ten
minutes outside of downtown Mobile, AL and is very close to Mobile Bay.
Spending time near the water and growing up in the area that I did greatly influenced
the way that I think about things and the way that I live my life. My familyhas lived
in them same area for generations and not many have moved away. In Jamaica
Kincaids A Small Place, Kincaid talks about how when multiple generations grow
up in the same area, they tend to become more invested and involved with the area
that they are in, growing in their appreciation for the place that they grew up. The
place that I grew up in has greatly affected the person that I have become in ways
such as where my ancestors are from, how I view social issues, and my own personal
identity.
My mother s family lived on the same river about a mile away, and my father s
family had lived in the city for generations. The area I grew up in was the same area
that my parents and grandparents grew up in, so it is safe to say that I was greatly
influenced by the area. Since I have such a deep connection to the area I grew up in, I
have developed a fondness for the river and the wildlife in it. My whole life I have

Standardized testing is a form of testing used by our educational system to measure
the success of a school s students and faculty. A typical student takes 112 mandated
standardized tests between PreKindergarten and twelfth grade. The use of these tests
became mandatory in 2002 as part of the No Child Left Behind Act. Although there
are some individuals who support these tests, many parents, students, and teachers
experience the negative effects year after year. Standardized tests impact students
emotionally and do not provide accurate results of a child s educationlevel or teacher s
performance. They take away from students learning new things for months prior to
the testdate as teacher s focus primarily on this one test to satisfy our government.
Standardized testing has been used for many years, but has not always been
mandatory and there was little emphasis put on it. Previously, the test was used to see
where a student was at with their education, but did not dictate the level of their
education or their teachers performance. During this time, the school atmosphere was

consistency. When a student does not feel safe he or she will reflect this through his
or her behavior. Trust is important for students to take risks and allow learning to
occur in the classroom. Trust, safety, and consistency are beneficial in the learning
environment. A classroom where students feel safe, realize the teacher is consistent,
and trust is developed, will allow students to grow and change socially, emotionally,
and academically. This will offer a positive learning environment. Establishing
rapport with students is extremely important. Students should feel like a teacher
genuinely cares about their well being. Trust is an important component of the
classroom learning environment. A student should respect and trust his or her
teacher and the teacher should be respectful of his or her students and their families.
This will encourage a nurturing learning environment and decrease behavioral
problems in the classroom. When the teacher is consistently supporting the rules,
and allowing the students to feel safe in the classroom, trust begins to develop.
Teachers have to work to develop trust and respect in the classroom due to the fact
that children in today s world are often mistrusting because of society s messages of
the world being dangerous (world view) as well as their own direct experiences (self
view) with abuse, violence, and neglect. Providing a safe and secure environment
enables students to explore and participate in learning. Students will volunteer
answers and ask questions when they feel safe. When students feel safe they are more
willing to talk about themselves to others and the teacher. Establish relationships with
your students and build a sense of community within your classroom. Students need
to get to know each other as well as experience the human side of their teacher. This
will allow for a safe and trusting classroom environment. A positive learning
environment requires consistency within the classroom and by the teacher. Rules
