1) Infant development occurs in an orderly, predictable manner determined by intrinsic and extrinsic forces. Development proceeds from head to toe and proximal to distal.
2) Each developmental domain (physical, motor, cognitive, psychosocial) must be assessed within the context of ongoing developmental surveillance, as skills in one domain influence others.
3) Speech delays are common concerns but distinguishing isolated from true language delays is important for appropriate referrals. Understanding normal development helps recognize early pathologic patterns.
