Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist changes in its motion. It is defined as the property of matter to remain at rest or remain in motion with the same speed and direction unless acted upon by an external force. There are three types of inertia: inertia of rest, inertia of direction, and inertia of motion. Inertia of rest is an object's resistance to starting motion from a state of rest. Inertia of direction is an object's resistance to changing its direction of motion without an external force. Inertia of motion is an object's resistance to changing its speed or stopping its motion without an external force applied.
