2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

INTRODUCTION
Textile Accounts 14percent of India’s industrial production and around
27 percent of its exports earnings from growing its own raw material (cotton,
jute, silk and wool) to providing value added products to consumers (fabric and
garments), the textile industry covers a wide range of economic activities,
including employment generation in both organised and unorganised sectors.
Manmade fibres accounts for 40 percent share in a cotton dominated
Indian textile industry. India accounts 15 percent of world’s total cotton crop
production and records largest producer of silk.
Textile sector is the second largest employer after the agriculture sector in
both rural and urban areas. India is a large pool of skilled low-cost textile
workers, experienced in technology.
Nowadays, out of the total demand of the textile fibres about 70% is
covered by cotton. Its widespread use is largely due to ease with which its fibers
are spun into yarn.

MIXING:
This is the first process carried ot manually by labours.
8 bales per day approximately.
Cotton is received in bales for getting various counts of yarn; it is required to
mix various varieties of cotton accordingly. The mixing formula differs from
count to count and mill to mill.
The size, weight, density of bales for cotton varies country to country.
After Mixing ,the mixed cotton is carried to ha Blow room.
Normally cotton bale weighs around 170 Kgs.
.
15. 15
BLOW ROOM:
In this room the polyester is opened and cleaned to produce a clean well
opened and uniform lap. It cleans the seeds and input, is in the form of a lap.
The weight of each lap is 15kgs the waste weight is less than 8%.Blow room
line consists of opening, cleaning, mixing and lap making machine. In this room
tarmacs machine is used for this process.
16. 16
CARDING:
In carding process laps are taken from the blow room department to the
carding department for further opening and cleaning. The load is fed into
carding machine and well opened and more uniform silver is produced in the
carding machine.
DRAWING:
This has got up 25 drawing machine. In this process has got breaker and
finisher. The carding sliver is fed into drawing machine. In drawing the
polyester it is drawn parallel and collected in cones and stores in place for
spinning process here.. In this section the carding sliver gets their original
shape. The quality of sliver will be more improved.
SIMPLEX:
This mill has got MMC simplex machine the sliver is converted into a
thick thread from roving and rolled.
17. 17
SPINNING:
There are 6 short frames. The yarn which is delivered from roller is
wound on plastic tubes called “Ring bobbin” speed in increased according to the
production.
IMPORTANT PROPERTIES CONSIDERED FOR SPINNING:
Fibre length& length uniformity
Fibre strength and elongation.
Fibre fineness.
Fibre cleanliness.
Fibre colour.
Fibre stiffness
CONE WINDING:
There are about 60 “spindles tex winding machines” the defect found in
the thread is removed by yarn cleaner and quality of the yarn will improved the
size of cone.
PACKING:
18. 18

more difficult to spin than longer ones.
So staple length varies from short to longer length fibres, short fibres also
resulting in more hairy yarns.

The machine is used for the weighted the silver. The weighted should be
of 18grams.
Function of the machine:
Used for making Sliver and roving lea and count determination.
Weight unit= Weight bothfor sliver and roving is measured in grain.
WARP REEL:
A wrap reel or skein winder is a device for measuring yarn and making it
into hanks of a standard size.
The reel is of a standard size and its revolutions are counted as the yarn is
wrapped around it.
Function of the machine:
Used for making yarn lea and count measurement.
