Analysis Of The Movie Butterfield Stars Essay
Butterfield stars as Bruno, a curious, stubborn eight year old whose family is relocated to the
countryside when his father receives a new job as a head member of the Nazi party, working for
the Auschwitz Birkenau concentration camp. Lonely and frustrated from having no one his
own age to talk to, Bruno explores past the limits of his backyard. He comes across a barbed
wire fence, with a young boy named Schmuel (played by Scanlon) on the other side wearing
what Bruno perceives to be striped pajamas. The two boys strike up a friendship through the
fence, with Bruno coming to visit Shmuel almost daily. Neither boy grasps that Schmuel is in a
death camp, and when Schmuel confesses to Bruno that he is Jewish, Bruno doesn t not seem to
understand why that matters. Curious as to what really lies on the other side of the fence, Bruno
and Schmuel plot for him to sneak into the camp, which leads to the demise of both of them. The
film is more emotion based rather than fact based, in an attempt to appeal to the audiences
symphonies rather than instruct them on a historical event. It has been criticized for its accuracy,
specifically pertaining to the ages of the boys. Many critics claim that boys as young as Schmuel
would never have been at Auschwitz, because all children too young to work were gassed upon
arrival. Others argue that the film is symbol of innocence, and the two boys reflect how children
are able to look past each other s differences easier than adults. Critics also

On-Campus Garden Persuasive Essay
Sustainability is something we talk about a lot. It s taught to kids in elementary and middle
schools now, but when I was in primary school it was not heavily focused on. There has been
shift in priorities between generations, and I feel that it s very hard to get my generation on
board with living in a sustainable manner. I once gave a speech on the importance of recycling
that almost put the entire class to sleep. I think this is because my generation does not care, it s
not their problem, the idea of the earth not supporting them is not something that has been
brought to their doorstep, and in a manner of speaking they are unaware that their actions have
negative consequences. My ideas for making the Grand View campus more eco friendly is a
three fold process fully incorporated to form a closed loop. First, I believe we should have a(n)
on campus garden(s) where students are responsible for caring for crops which could be consumed
in the cafeteria or used in a food pantry. Second, we should harvest rainwater for use in the gardens

In this example, the school installed a 50,000 gallon tank below the frost level in the ground. The
tank is made from recycled plastic. The water is stored in the underground tank and then it is
cleaned before it is transferred to a 600 gallon holding tank in the basement of the school
(Pushard, n.d.). This water is used in the toilets and in the irrigation systems. Any flushed water or
overflow rainwater goes into the on site wetlands which are a rubber lined rock filled pond where
plants are grown in septic water and the micro organisms and plants feed off the pollutants. The
clean water is then pumped into the ground to help recharge the aquifer (Pushard,

Bear Sterns Rise and Fall
The rise and fall of Bear Stearns
Introduction
Bear Stearns, the fifth largest investment bank in US, was established as an equity trading house
in 1923 by Joseph Bear, Robert Stearns, and Harold Mayer. Its headquarters was located in New
York City with offices in the major US cities, South America, Europe, and Asia, employing more
than 13,500 people around the world. The firm survived every major crisis like the Great
Depression, World War II, the 1987 market crash, and the 9/11 terrorists attack and never had a
losing quarter in its history until December 2007, when Bear Stearns announced the first loss for
about $854 million.
1. Failure Analysis:
1.1. Major factors that contributed to Bear Stearns failure

The result was a private bailout by the major financial firms and supervised by the Federal Reserve.
Bankers Trust, Barclays, Chase, Credit Suisse First Boston, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs,
Merrill Lynch, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Salomon Smith Barney, and UBS agreed to contribute
with $ 300 million each one, while SociГ©tГ© GГ©nГ©rale invested $125 million and Lehman
Brothers and Paribas did the same thing with $100 million.
The only bank that refused the join the syndicate was Bear Stearns. In the Bear Stearns case, the
sudden collapse of the firm and the impossibility to calculate the risk of taking Bear s mortgage
holdings forced the Federal Reserve to be involved actively into the bailout instead of the advisory
role it took in the LTCM case 10 years earlier.
1.4 What could Bear Stearns have done differently to avoid this fate?
In the early 2000 s, after the Federal Reserve dropped the interest rate and raised the money supply
trying to control the crisis produced by 9/11 terrorist attacks, the firm s directors should have been
more disciplined with the financial strategies, especially the ones related with hedge funds who
made poor quality investments. Furthermore, the failure to evaluate the risk, to diversify the
portfolio, and to control the use of high leveraging was driven by the need to justify the enormous

Evolution Of The Modern Day Human Essay
The modern day human has not existed for very long, in fact its one of the recent species to
populate the Earth. Before modern day humans or Homo sapiens sapiens as we are scientifically
known as, existed a similar yet less developed Homo genus named Homo erectus/ Homo ergaster.
Evidence of these species dates back to over 1.9 million years ago and up to as recently as 70,000
years ago in which the evidence can be found in Africa, Europe and Asia. In this essay I will firstly
provide a general timeline, providing key dates and phases of evolution. I will then discuss my
findings from the research I have collected as well as information provided by expert insights and
discoveries. I will explain the cause for the expansion from Africa to Europe and Asia and lastly I
will elaborate on the established branches of Homo erectusand how the different Homo genus came
to exist.
Timeline
The Homo genus dates back almost three million years. The Homo habilis species was the first in
the Homo genus and is believed to have initially developed 2.8 mya (million years ago) in East
Africa before becoming extinct 1.5 mya. This occurred during the Lower Paleolithic period (2.7
mya 200 kya) in which the very first stone tools were created and mastered named the Oldowan
stone industry. H. habilis were the first fully bipedial species which allowed them to travel further
than their quadrupedial ancestors. Having covered most of Africa, the H. habilis was then able to

Great Depression Causes
The Great Depression was a major event in United States economic history. The Great Depression
was the worst economic downturn in the history of the industrialized world, lasting from 1929 to
1939 ( Great Depression ). There were many great factors that lead to The Great Depression, and
also, some people and events that helped finish it. The stock market crash, banking system failure,
and unemployment are some of the many events to cause The Great Depression. From The Great
Depression, the federal government has learned many lessons from the past and has created
systems to prevent it from reoccurring in the future. Some of the people and events that helped end
it were president Franklin D. Roosevelt, federal government programs, and World... Show more

Some examples of these programs were the Tennessee Valley Authority Act, National Industry
Recovery Act, Glass Steagall Act, Wagner Act, Social Security Act, and also, he created the
Works Progress Administration (WPA) ( New Deal ). In May, the Tennessee Valley Authority
Act allowed the federal government to build dams to control flooding and to generate
hydroelectric power. Congress passed a bill that same month that paid farmers who farmed
basic products to leave their fields in hopes to raise prices of goods. In June, the National
Industry Recovery Act guaranteed workers to be able to unionize for higher wages and better
work conditions. Along with the National Industrial Recovery Act, it established a public works
administration. The Glass Steagall Act effectively separated commercial banking from
investment banking and created the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, among other things.
It was one of the most widely debated legislative initiatives before being signed into law by
President Franklin D. Roosevelt in June 1933 (9). This act was a very important act for banks
across the nation. The bill was designed to prevent the diversion of funds for other purposes,
provide a safer and more effective use of assets of banks, and to regulate interbank control. The
Wagner Act, more formally known as the National Labor Relations Act, created a board to

Scottish Independence
Should Scotland become Independent? Scotland is at a turning point. On 18th September 2014 a
referendum will be held asking voters a simple yes/no question: Should Scotland be an
independent country? It has become more apparent that Scotland does not benefit from being part
of the union with England, Wales and Northern Ireland and as a consequence of this many people
agree that Scotland would be better off as an independent country. Some say the union is no
longer fit for purpose and it is holding Scotland back. But many people oppose these views saying
Scotland needs the rest of the UK and the economic and social factors of independence would be
too great to deal with. Independence for Scotland means that we will have the right to... Show more

Becoming independent would therefore arguably be a step for democracy and for the health
and recovery of its economy. The majority of laws which are put in place in Scotland are decided
and passed in Westminster by English politicians who will not be affected by these laws and are
intended primarily for England without much consideration for Scotland. At present Scotland has
a government that runs lots of Scottish affairs but has one hand tied behind its back with ones
not in their control such as taxation and fiscal policies. Although Scotland already has control
over its own parliament and legal system, it still has no control over its own defence and security.
My favourite news recently is that nuclear warheads were transported through Glasgow even

MoD recently carried out a mock emergency exercise which took them five hours to complete the

though most people in Scotland are against them; polls show 70% of Scots want it gone yet the

Abstract Thermoset materials can be replaced by cross linkable thermoplastic materials meeting the
desirable properties of thermoset. The paper describes about the process parameters, cross linking
process and its advantages over thermoset processing.
Keywords Thermoset, Thermoplastic, mechanical properties, crosslinking agents I.Introduction
Thermosets are commodity as well as engineering plastics. They account for more than 70% of
the total plastics market share. Though they are easily processable and available at relatively low
cost, they involve cross linking process (curing) so as to become suitable for the application. There
are certain disadvantages associated with processing of thermoset category of plastics like high

B.Chemical cross linking
C.Cross linking by SILANE
Amongst above 3, physical cross linking is discussed in detail below.
In this method, cross linking is obtained by free radical mechanism. The free radical is generated
in a polymer chain by using high energy radiations. The free radical is formed by breaking C H
bond and formation of C C bond amongst the monomers. Schematic of this can be represented as

Comparing The Imp Of The Perverse And The Tell-Tale Heart
Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most recognizable literary figures in 19th century American literature.
Poe is most well known for his short stories that focus on a psychologically unhinged character who
murders an innocent person without motive and eventually cracks under pressure before the police,
ultimately turning himself in for the crimes he committed. Two such stories that follow this theme
are The Imp of the Perverse and The Tell Tale Heart
.
The Imp of the Perverse begins unlike many of Poe s other short stories; it appears to be a serious
essay about phrenology, a science that sought to determine the relationship between character and
skull morphology. However, the short story quickly transitions into a format that Poe would
continue to use throughout his other stories. Once phrenology has been explained, the narrator
declares that he has fallen victim to the imp of the perverse, which he contends is an innate and
primitive principle of human action, or an instinct, that prompts an individual to be self destructive
(Poe, The Imp of the Perverse, 281). In The Imp of the Perverse, the narrator murders a man using a
poisoned candle that emits poisonous gas/smoke. The narrator admits that his plan was
premeditated and that [f]or weeks, for months, I pondered upon the means of murder. I rejected a
thousand schemes, because their accomplishment involved a chance of detection (283). Thinking
he has gotten away with murder, the narrator declares, I am safe I

The Work Of A Mercenary
The job of a mercenary, fighting a war or performing some sort of military duty, for pay, without
nationalist allegiance, has been a job ...since the dawn of warfare, from Xenophon s ten thousand
Greeks hired to fight in Persia to the Swiss Guards who protect the Vatican today (Blood and
Treasure). Simply put, Mercenaries are nothing new. However only in the last 60 or so years has a
new, modern form of mercenarywork come into practice. Modern mercenaries today often function
in the form of a Private MilitaryCorporation or PMC. These are corporations that train and deploy
often elite fighting forces to fulfill contracts paid for by various clients, most of the time
governments. These corporations are rather controversial for a number... Show more content on

After successfully using Private Military Companies in Vietnam, the United States continued their
use, doling out contracts to corporations during the later Cold War Era. During this time many
United State PMCs were tied to tasks too dirty for the U.S. government. (Avant) The use of
private military companies has continued ever since and has only grown in scale. Other than the
size of the Industry, not much has changed in PMCs. They still receive funding mainly from their
clients, who are often national governments, and from their investors if they are publicly held
corporations. In terms of the size of the market, the PMC market was expected to grow in net
revenue from $55.6 billion to $202 billion between the years of 1990 and 2010. These predictions
had merit especially in the 90s when the stock value of public PMCs grew two times faster than the
Dow Jones Industrial Average (Avant).
Since their inception private military companies have claimed to provide services of elite and
precise military force for nations and organizations; these organizations claim that they are better
suited for the job than a military and they do not shy away from the fact that they are motivated
entirely by money. Erik Prince comes to the defence of PMCs, as he is the founder and CEO of
perhaps the best known PMC in the world, Blackwater. He says on the matter of

The Motivation And Intrinsic Motivation
All children are unique and learn in different ways, however, when it comes to their motivation
they will most likely fall into one of two categories. Extrinsic motivation revolves around grades
and points and competition, and intrinsic motivation stems more from personal interests, sense of
belonging, and passion to grow. (Carol Dweck). Roman, an 11 year old high functioning autistic
child, had no desire to participate in any class learning when I began working with him. He only
excitedly and willingly participated when the situation was mandatory or if rewards were included.

Narrator, judge, referee). To further engage Roman, I decided to seek his opinion while keeping
the format and structure of the activities. When rules are provided to the children in an autonomy
supportive way (explanatory rationales, and acknowledgment of the children s perspectives and
feelings) there is no decrease in engagement as opposed to children who do not have their input
included. (Skinner and Belmot 1999). Personal interest, opinions, and overall intrinsic factors are
why Roman started becoming eager and excited to engage and try new things.
Including more team based activities helped Roman feel a sense of belonging and safety.
Maintaining a high ratio of positive statements as well as expressing respect for all students, builds
trust in the classroom. (Evertson, C. M., Emmer, E. T). By implementing activities that had more of
a collaborative process, peer encouragement and help were more evident and motivation can
increase when everyone feels safe and helps each other. (Hagelskamp, C. 51 (3 4), 530 54). Roman
began not fearing participating in activities once he knew that everyone supported each other and
their input. Additionally, educational games where students cheer on their teammates boosted self
esteem, and the emotional well being of students can influence the quality of their participation.

America s The Fourteenth Amendment
July 9, 1868, the day the Fourteenth Amendment was ratified and establish into the Constitution.
On this day, the Federal Government granted citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the
United States. This all changed on October 3, 1965 when Lyndon Johnson passed the Hart Celler
Immigration Bill. When this bill passed, it allowed politicians to redefine the way the Fourteenth
Amendment was written. The obvious reason politicians would want to take advantage of this is
for votes. If you have illegal aliens coming into the country and politicians granting them
citizenship, the aliens are more than likely going to vote in favor of the politician that allowed them
to accommodate with ease. This not only transformed the law and Constitution, but America itself.
In consequence of America letting an undocumented amount of illegal aliens in, it has given a new
blueprint to the country as a whole. Immigrants who come to America no longer have to assimilate
to American culture, civilization or ethnicity. Instead, Americans have to homogenize themselves to
the foreign customs of the substantial amount of immigrants entering the nation. With all this all of
this being taken into consideration, I believe there are four things that America could do and
should do to reclaim and solidify the American way. These four are as follows: secure the border, e

Mechanisms Of Logistic Growth In Relation To Locust Swarms
Exponential Growth is shaped in a J form, this type of growth curve occurs when supplies and
materials to a specific population are abundant. Since usually environments are not idealized and
resources are limited, exponential growth curve doesn t occur as much as a logistic growth curve.
Logistic growth is a type of growth curve,in a S form, that occurs more often in an environment.
Since each environment has a carrying capacity, which is the number of individuals from a
population an environment can hold, the logistic growth is the most logical way to represent a
population size over time. An example of a population size that could be represented by an
exponential growthcurve are mice. Since mice reproduce many offspring at the time of
reproduction the population size will exponentially grow, however since mice also have a high
predation rate the exponential curve starts rapidly decreasing over a period of time. An example of
a population size that could be represented by a logistic growth curve are lions. Usually when lions
reproduce only a few offspring are created. However, once an environment reaches its carrying
capacity, the population size decreases as the environment can t sustain the entire population and
the fittest survive.
2) The two mechanisms of density dependent regulation that most directly relate to locust swarms
is predation and competition for resources. Locust swarms are animals that have many animals
feeding on them such as ant lions. If the

Symbolism In The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In Heaven
Sherman Alexie s book The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven was written using a
multitude of literary devices to explain what it is like to be a native American. The novel Alexie
has written is a combination of vignettes to show the life of Native American people through
symbolism and other literary devices. In the vignette The Fun House Alexie uses various symbols
to present and describe things in this vignette. It is in this vignette where Alexie brings the creek
into the book. Alexie uses the Tshimakain creek as a symbol to express that you needto look within
yourself to find the strength to change.
The creek in a sense is the symbol for change itself. Alexie uses the character of the aunt, Nezzy,
to reveal how bad her life is on the reservation. Her husband is a drunk and has gotten into
reoccurring car accidents, as indicated on page 79, where am I The hospital Again? Yeah, again
. After she gave birth to her son, had her tubes tied unwillingly by the doctors, to prevent her
from having any more kids. They lied to her to get her to agree to have her tubes tied. They told
her it was to prove she was Indian, but in reality, it was a dishonest trick. Alexie shows that
Nezzy s husband and son are very demanding, for she says, you re just a couple of ungrateful
shits (Alexie 77). They take advantage of her. They just let her do everything and don t think
that they need to do anything to help her. Her husband and son also don t help her. She asks on
page 77 why the son didn t help her, and the son couldn t stop laughing. This is the point Nezzy
realizes that she needs change. The creek represents change. It represents the washing away of the
bad stuff and carrying it far away. Creeks never rest and they never stop changing. Creeks and
rivers change the scenery and the landscape around them, they do the likewise for people, washing
away the weights and the corrupt things of people to create something new.

Business Intelligence Is The Broadest Category And...
Business Intelligence is the broadest category and encompasses the other three terms here (at
least as they re used in a business IT context). BI is data driven decision making. It includes the
generation, aggregation, analysis, and visualization of data to inform and facilitate business
management and strategizing. All the other terms refer to some aspect of how information is
gathered or crunched, while BI goes beyond the data to include what business leaders actually
do with the insights they glean from it. BI therefore is not strictly technological; it involves the
processes and procedures that support data collection, sharing, and reporting, all in the service of
making better decisions. One of the trends in recent years has been away from systems that rely
on IT staff to provide reports and graphs for decision makers toward what s called self service BI
tools that allow business users to generate their own reports and visualizations to share with
colleagues and help everyone choose what course to take.
Two industry cases where such a revolution has brought in path breaking impact on Business. These
are:

Analysis Of Maya Angelou s Champion Of The World
In the United States, there are people from all over the world who come from different
backgrounds and have faced horrendous things. Some of these people feel that their race is
inferior to others, but deal with it in different ways. Although the tension between whites and
minorities was at it s strongest in the 1950 s, today s world still deals with racial discrimination.
The question Is one race superior to all others? Some overcome this by believing one person can
change how other races perceive them or by confronting the public and shining light on what s
going on in the world. Throughout this paper I will discuss how every person overcomes the
stereotypes they face everyday. I will then analyze how stereotyping and discrimination... Show

Angelou uses descriptive language to draw the readers in, she gives detail by detail of how the
boxing match took place and all the emotions that were running through her. For the most part the
writer is credible, she explains how the black community in her town came together to listen to the
radio, but after some research it was found that Joe Louis and Primo Carnera only fought once and
it was not a championship fight. Perhaps she was referring to that same fight, but simply made a
mistake. Within any type of ethnic community, people will always find an icon they can believe
in, People use these icons to seek power and acceptance as a way to hide their inferiority
complex. People all over the world are tearing eachother down for meaningless racial
competition. It isn t difficult to see that there are more important things in life than to be
boasting about one s race. In Gloria Naylor s essay, The Meanings of a Word (1986), proves that
the language of stereotypes can be powerful and painful to encounter. Naylor supports this
statement by providing small anecdotes of how the first time she truly heard that derogatory term
compared to when she heard people of her neighborhood using it. Naylor s purpose is to discuss
how a word can go from a positive connotation to a negative one simply by how it is spoken and by

The past century saw major developments in the economic, social, political and cultural life of the
United States as it grew from a burgeoning industrial nation to the world s leading superpower. By
the 1900s, giant firms such as Carneige Steel, The Standard Oil Trust, among a few others
controlled 2/5th of the nation s marketing capital. This resulted in a rapid increase in the number of
industrial workers and even though the American society was growing wealthier overall, there were
several thousands that still lived not only in poverty but also far below the poverty lines. It all

The Railroads comprised the first big business for America ad their systemization and
consolidation by the end of the 19th century brought about the development of large business
enterprises in the world. The Gilded Age, even though known for its advancements in the field of
industrialization was known to have been an era of serious social problems, hidden under the glitz
and glamour of precipitously evolving developments. The lessons of the railroads were applied to
other big businesses and were soon met with public outrage at the unscrupulous tactics, monopoly
control and sky high earnings of these affluent corporations. The number of industrial workers had
increased rapidly from 885, 000 to 3.2 million from 1860 to 1890 alone. Also, the American
Revolution of 1765 1783 had resulted in the dissemination of new socio political ideas, especially
considering that the American nation had succeeded and won its independence from the absolute
military power of its time. The ideals of social equality ran high. However, changes in trade and
commerce resulting from modern capitalism were a complete deviation from this vision. Thus,
arose grassroots organizations that would respond to the changes in society through labor
movements, the 1960s 70s feminist movement responding primarily to women s suffrage, civil
rights movements, antiwar activism and gay rights. As the American society continued to grow

Women s Status in Islam Essay
Women s Status in Islam In Islam, women and men are equal in terms of their relationship with
Allah. It can be clearly seen that Allah has created men and women differently, this is so that they
may fulfil different purposes in life. It is not a question of the superiority of one gender over
another, rather it is a matter of role differentiation. Islamteaches that men and women complement
one another and are both equally important. On the other hand, this is not the case is many cultures
and traditions; before and after Islam, the status of woman throughout much of the world was...

This is verified in the following hadith reported by Al Bukhari
A man came to the Prophet (s) and asked him: O Messenger of Allah, who among the people s
worthy of my good company? The prophet said, Your mother . The man asked, Then who? The
Prophet (s) again said, Your mother . The man asked, Then who? The Prophet again said, Your
mother. The man asked, Then who? The Prophet said, Then your father.
This not only shows that a mother is far more respected than other women, but also, far superior to
a father. A woman, only as a woman, is seen only equal to man, but certainly not greater, if not
slightly inferior in some circumstances.
Furthermore, the Quran also emphasises and makes people realise that their mothers bore them in
pain, and that they should respect and be grateful to their mothers because of that:
And we have enjoined on men (to be good) to his parents: in weakness upon weakness did his
mother bear him...
Partly because of this, motherhood is regarded as a most noble and honourable calling in Islamic
society. Women have been given the role of motherhood because Allah has blessed them with the
maternal instinct enables them to take care of children. This is supported in the Quran:
Moreover, the Quran has a special recommendation for good treatment of mothers.
Mothers have great respect and honour in Islam

The theft or sharing of information could be intentional or unintentional. In any of these case, even
if the outsourcing service provider keeps the outsourced information available, unchanged and
accessible to the owners at all times, there are still risks of possible data confidentiality issues.
The use of an enterprise service provider for processing information systems applications such as
payroll, human resources, or sales order taking is another excellent way for organizations to
minimize cost while still experience the full benefit of an IT system. It is worth noting that while
this is very cost effective and significantly reduces the load on an organization, outsourcing an
organization s IT applications to an enterprise service provider for processing is a risky path to
thread. Information privacy and integrity are at a very great risk here. An enterprise service
provider or employers of the provider are capable of selling out the customers, employees and
sales information of one organization to another. Employees of the Service providers could also
include their name (create false employees) among the names of legitimate employees of the
outsourced organization and masquerade as one of the real employees and receive pay every pay
period. These and other privacy and integrity concern must be taken into serious consideration by
organization outsourcing interested in outsourcing to an enterprise service

The first thing that pops out in the room is the crinkled up wrappers, scattered around the room
everywhere, some torn up and in the trash. There were even some wrappers that were still brand

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
The Importance of Mohandas Gandhi was written by Mary and Mike Furbee. Mohandas
Karamchand Gandhi was born in the town of Porbandar located in western India. He grew up in
a very religious and affluent family, which made his social and economic life a bit easier.
Instead of growing up and achieving through his families money, Gandhi wanted to earn his own
name. He was married at the age of thirteen to Kasturibai and also continued his studies. After
High School, he went to University College of London for law school. When he came back to
India, he got an offer to work in South Africa in the colony of Natal as a low level lawyer. There
he saw that Indians had very less rights and were targets of racial discrimination. He then made a
Natal Indian Congress to fight for the rights of Indians. When most problems were solved in
South Africa, Gandhi went back to India and also noticed the same mistreatment given to Indians
there. He then decided to make India independent, not by force, but by peace. Gandhi was quite
lucky during his time to attend law school abroad in London. Some children did not even get a
chance to go to school in villages. He faced challenges during his childhood, such as managing a
marriage at the age of education. He even dealt with loss of children. However, Gandhi did not give
up, but instead he work hard to get good education. When he went to South Africa, Gandhi noticed
discrimination against Indians, and he protested against it. Despite continuous

depression, which are helpful in detection of the illness. There are various ways to treat depression,
such as medication, group therapy, and/or herbal supplements. There are pros and cons with each
treatment, but the worst coincides with the medication suicide. Much research has been conducted,

There are still several options for treatment that you must choose from, as well as having to deal
with side effects that accompany each treatment. Of all the treatments, antidepressants tend to have
the most side effects. Some of the side effects common to all three types of antidepressants are:
anxiety, vomiting, confusion, chest pain, blurred vision, irritability, insomnia, sexual dysfunction,
weight gain, headache, and nervousness (Cheung et al. 2003, Vanderkooy et al. 2002). Some other,
more severe, side effects are difficulty urinating, decreased appetite, heart complications, and
suicide (Simon and Stern 2003 Review). It is the last side effect, suicide, which has recently
caused some controversy within the medical field. With recent research showing a correlation
between antidepressants and suicide, as well as the FDA ordering warning labels for suicide on
antidepressant medication, physicians have to be careful prescribing the drugs, especially to
children and adolescents.
Statistics show suicide to be the third leading cause of death among 13 19 year olds, with
approximately 6000 suicide deaths each year (Dickinson 1999). Because of statistics like this, the
National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) researchers are vying to find interventions to help
prevent suicide among children and adolescents. However, until then, the best prevention appears to

Why Is Artifice Important
Artifice has been proven to be such an essential skill over the years and today according to Chris
Hedge in his expert Empire of Illusion. Hedge brings up good points that are true about article in
today s world however I disagree that it is the most essential skill. Hedge provides examples that
include politics, entertainment, and advertisement. Artifice has been and still is used everyday
where people either are aware of it or not. Artifice can be a good thing but only in certain
circumstances and never 100% good. Trickery can be useful for companies wanting to sell
products or entertainment. It helps actors, and especially politicians who need to gain support.
To be able to make others believe in something that may not be true is an amazing skill to have
but not the most essential as Hedge claims. A reason why artifice is not the most essential skill
to have is because of the side effects that comes with it. In the end it is better if you are honest
about things and try to find more positive things to gain support or money. It may be tempting to
trick others especially if they are stubborn or strongly opposed you and your values but all together
it will not work out and will not last. The most essential skill is not artifice because there are

Somalia And Its Effects On Somalia
I don t recognize my people anymore. I feel Somalia is lost. There is no Somalia. It is just a
name (Abdi, 2016) . Over the past 20 years Somalia as a country has been in turmoil and constant
fighting. Today s Somalia is still a harsh environment and the people are unforgiving as they too
are trying to survive this oasis of violence. Considering Somalia in the news now we see after
years of fighting and trying to support this country with food, water, and security it has
progressed but not quickly. It has been a battle for any support to the country essentially taking
two steps forward and one step back. In 2012 a new internationally backed government was
installed: Somalia has shown progression but is still being hindered by an Al Qaeda aligned
group, Al Shabaab. Because of this newly backed government Somalia had their first elected

country is setting stones to become politically stable. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud had made plans
but shelved next Presidential election due to lack of security in and infrastructure (Somalia

an issue in Australian institutions. Furthermore, it will present possible HR policies to advance
more women into leadership and to increase the proportion of women in senior positions. The under

History of Chinese Students Studying Abroad or in the U.S.
Introduction: history of Chinese students studying abroad in U.S. The history of Chinese students
studying in American universities dates back to the mid 1850s, when the first student, Yung Wing,
graduated from Yale University in 1854 (Bartlett and Fischer Para. 8). After that. Qin Dynasty
starts sending Chinese students to learned new sciences and technologies and we called
Westernization Movement . The educational missions to the US were organized in the 1870s to
train specialists who would create better engines and iron hulls for Chinese ships (Bartlett and
Fischer Para. 8). The 1870s mission involved about 120 students, who were sponsored to study at
the United States top universities. Since the 1870s, the number of Chinese students in American
colleges has grown exponentially to become the largest population of foreign students in the US
(Institute of International Education [IIE] 7). After the Qing court s resistance to reform and by
China s weakness, Sun Yat Sen led a revolutionary military uprising. During the regime changing
time, people really didn t know what democracy is. Therefore, more and more students chose to

Social Media Has Changed Society s Priorities,...
Since the invention of the Internet, people have become indulged with its copious functions,
from making advanced programs to learning how to do new projects to social media. Social
media has evolved over the years, from Friendster to Myspace to Facebook, since the late 1990s,
and people have incorporated it into their lives. It is the modern way for people to connect and
communicate with anyone and everyone across the globe. Plus, social media is everywhere;
people utilize it when they are on the bus, at the checkout line, and even when they are using the

that social media has altered society. Social media has changed society s priorities,
characteristics, and mentality. We live in a world now where we have never been more
connected while being more alone. Instead of spending hours on the phone or with our close

depleting animal populations. Poaching is defined as the illegal killing of endangered and/or
protected animals and could also be considered hurting animals that are on protected land
(Pedersen). If poaching is continued, years of conservation and development would have been
for nothing. For years, groups have put work and money into keeping animals safe. Many
people turn to poaching as an activity because it s a quick way to make a lot of money as tusks
of a single adult elephant can be worth more than ten times the average annual income in many
African countries . Rhino poaching rates were up 1000% at the beginning of the decade and is
continuing to grow quickly ( The African Poaching Crisis ). Many, many animals and people are
affected by this poaching. Poaching is the result of many other issues. High demands in Asian
markets mean more reward for poachers and without this demand there would be no reason to
poach at all ( Poaching Infographic ). Another cause of poaching is the

How Did Elizabeth Pinncney Influence The Economy
Elizabeth Pinckney is perhaps one of the most influential people when it comes to agriculture in
the early U.S. as she established indigo as a new cash crop, first for South Carolina, then the rest
of the South. Her discovery and the tests that she conducted in botany helped the agricultural
economy in the South grow and soon flourish. Eliza Lucas was born in Antigua in the West
Indies in 1722 and was the eldest child of Lt. Colonel George Lucas and Ann Lucas. She had 3
other siblings; her brothers, Thomas and George, and her sister Mary. Eliza was in no way born
in poverty as her family was well set, owning 3 sugarcane plantations. She grew up on one of
these plantations and lived an average life like everyone else and was soon, along with the rest of
her siblings, sent to receive schooling in England as this was the usual thing for elite colonists to
do when their children reached a certain age. It was the common belief that most girls would just
become wives and mothers so this made people of the time... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Eliza herself helped spread the growth of indigo by giving other farmers the seeds so they as
well could experience the wealth and prosperity. I couldn t agree more with historians as I
believe Eliza s knowledge, rich life, and devout belief in learning made her one of the first
cornerstones for women to build their claim on for better rights in the Unites States. I also agree
with their statements that her cultivation of the indigo plant helped the colonies survive and even
prosper leading up to the American Revolution. She was, without a doubt, one of the greatest
woman of her time and the legacy that she left behind still survives today and will for years and
years to

Rogier Van der Weyden Essay
Rogier Van der Weyden was a Flemish painter of the mid 15th century. Rogier was chiefly
influenced by his first teacher, Robert Campin. Although details of his early training are sketchy, it
is generally accepted that he entered the workshop of Robert Campin, the foremost painter in
Tournai and dean of the paintersguild, in 1427 at the age of 27 (http://www.belgium.be). Rogier
remained in Campin s studio for five years, becoming an independent master of the guild on
August 1, 1432. Van der Weyden was not permitted to sell his artwork while studying in Campin s
shop. From Campin, Rogier learned the ponderous, detailed realism that characterizes his earliest
paintings, and so alike are the styles of these two masters that critics still do... Show more content

Campin was not the only source of inspiration in Rogier s art. Jan van Eyck, the great painter from
Bruges, also profoundly affected the developing artist, introducing elegance and subtle visual
refinements into the bolder, Campinesque components of such early paintings by Rogier as St.
Luke Painting the Virgin. It was in Bruges, where Rogier may have resided between 1432 and
1435, that he became thoroughly acquainted with van Eyck s style (http://humanitiesweb.org). The
spiritual essence of a scene was displayed with similar technical virtuosity by Van der Weyden.
His international renown was exceeded only by that of Hugo van der Goes, who united van Eyck s
naturalism with penetrating studies of humanity(Eyewitness Books, Renaissance, 20.) Rogier may
well have also been influenced by the writings of Thomas a Kempis, the most popular theologian
of the era, whose quot;practical mysticism, quot; like Rogier s paintings, stressed empathetic
response to episodes from the lives of Mary, Christ, and the saints (http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint
/auth/weyden/). By translating the main ideas of Gothic Art into the new, lifelike style, Rogier did
a great service to northern art. He saved much of the tradition of lucid design that might otherwise
have been lost under the impact of Jan van Eyck s discoveries (The Story of Art, 276).
While on a pilgrimage to Italy in 1450, Rogier apparently tutored Italian

Stereotypes Of Colorism In Advertising
Do you ever think about how many women of color you see on the cover of Vogue Magazine?
How many happy families of color in commercials? Your answer may be Not really. This is
because in American society, there is a standard that everyone has to meet in order to be
successful, happy and even beautiful. Society contributes heavily to the oppression of young
adolescents of color. According to Oxford Dictionaries.com, Colorism is defined as: a form of
prejudice or discrimination in which people are treated differently based on the social meanings
to skin color. This is probably the reason why you don t see many people of color being portrayed
as successful in commercials. The majority of Americans see beauty as, fair skin, long and straight

Education during slavery was forbidden, because slave masters feared that the slaves would
become smart enough and they would have another Nat Turner Slave Rebellion throughout the
country, specifically the south. The lighter skinned slaves were taught how to read and write
while the darker skinned slaves were out in the fields, getting no form of education. Not only did
this concept make the darker slaves feel even more lesser of themselves, but it also started a self
fulfilling prophecy that is still very present today. In 1712, the infamous William Lynch
delivered a speech on the banks of the James River in the colony of Virginia, named, The Making
Of A Slave. Throughout this letter, Lynch conveys that he has a plan that will control the slaves
and it will last for up to 300 years. He discusses, separating the slaves by intelligence, age, sex,
size of plantations, status on plantation, fine hair and coarse hair, or if tall or short. By making
these differences present, William Lynch quickly created an imperfect social class amongst the
black slaves and black community. In today s society, excerpts from the infamous, William
Lynch s The Making Of A Slave speech are still very prominent in today s society. According to,
Erin Winkler, the author of, Children Are Not Colorblind: How Young Children Learn Race ,
psychological researchers suggests that children, in fact do recognize race from a very young
age, but also develop racial biases by ages three to five that don t necessarily resemble the racial
attitudes of adults in their lives. This just proves that even if some children of color aren t
necessarily taught that light skin may be better or dark skin is ugly, they notice the difference
between the two shades at a young age and what adults say to or around their children, do have an
affect on the way their children think. In the black community, many but not all,

3)In the Phaedrus, Plato discussed the metaphor of the chariot and charioteer. Explain the metaphor

chariot? Why?
In the Phaedrus, Plato shares the allegory of the chariot to explain the nature of the human soul or
psyche. The chariot is pulled by two winged horses, one mortal and the other immortal. The mortal,
black horse is deformed and obstinate. Plato describes the horse as a crooked lumbering animal,
put together anyhow... of a dark color, with grey eyes and blood red complexion; the mate of
insolence and pride, shag eared and deaf, hardly yielding to whip and spur (Phaedrus, Plato). The

How Important Was the Role of Women During Wwi Essay
How important was the role of women during world war 1
The early rush of volunteers and later the conscription of men led to a shortage of manpower on
the home front. Women, already working in munitions factories were encouraged to take on jobs
normally done by men. This was the start of major social change. Before the war, women had been
content to stay at home to bring up the family and do domestic work. It was considered
unbecoming for a woman to work. During the war it was considered unpatriotic not to. Many
changes came about as shown by the quote from A. J. P Taylor English History Women became
more independent. Women paid for their round at the pub. Fashion changed for practical reasons :

the start of the war almost the entire staff of the Glasgow Corporation tramways left to form a

greasers of the railways. When the war was over most of the women left, or were forced to

change to their life s. They began to do things the normally had never done before such as wear
trousers and smoke in public. After the second world war their daughter proved to be much
tougher to remove from their jobs. The war gave women, who weren t yet allowed to vote, the
chance to show that they were equal to men. It forced many men to change the way they regarded
women. More people realized that women could make a contribution in the workplace as well as at
home. The first World War could be said to have begun the movement for equal opportunities for
men and women. In conclution the part played by women during WW1 was huge, If it wasn t for

Schopenhauer s Criticism of Kant s Analysis of Object Essay
Schopenhauer s Criticism of Kant s Analysis of Object
Schopenhauer makes it clear that he is indebted to Kant for his vision of transcendental idealism,
and that his Critique of Pure Reason [2] is a work of genius. However, Schopenhauer argued that
Kant made many mistakes when formulating his philosophy, and he set about the task of
uncovering them in his Criticism of the Kantian Philosophy, an appendix to be found in The World
as Will and Representation [1]. In this essay I wish to analyse the criticism made against Kant s
determination of an object, since this is an important factor if we are to comprehend how we
understand reality.
Kant s Critique of Pure Reason [2] is notoriously difficult to read and often unclear. Possibly,...

Only with the concept of the chair does the chair become known. Concepts are essential if we are
to perceive the world: in no other way can an object be given to us [2; B33]. Thus, for Kant,
intuition and thought complement one another: thoughts without content are empty, intuitions
without concepts are blind [2; B75].
The scope of the concept of object goes further than the example I have given immediately
suggests: it does not just deal with an object that I perceive at one particular time, but can deal
with the object at different times, and at different positions in space. Thus, to take the example of
the particular chair I am looking at, the same concept of the chair synthesizes my immediate
intuition, along with the chair as it was yesterday when, I recall, it was in another room, and also
with any expectation I have of the chair tomorrow. The concept is able to synthesize all of these
manifold phenomena across time and space. It picks out those features that make it the same chair;
for example, that it is a particular shape and colour, and that it has a particular scratch mark on one
of its legs.
Bringing Thinking into Perception
Schopenhauer s first criticism of Kant is that he brings thinking into perception [1; p.439]. As we
have seen, for Kant, an object is not perceived meaningfully for what it is, until it is thought. Yet,
this seems odd, because it seems to me that I do not have

With the budgeting tool, the corporate can thus make informed financial decisions.
For AT T, Inc., the capital budgetis vital in putting to use the available resources. The act of
prioritizing mainly ensures that critical segments of the company are first to be factored in the
budgeting process and that they are adequately funded at all times (Wyatt, 2013). In that process, it
is easy for the company to identify deficits and adequately plan for loans or stock financing.
Since a budget is a component of sound and responsible financial management, tracking its
formulation and implementation can go a long way to ensuring its objectives are adequately met.
Sound budget management strategies include keeping a proper record of all the expenses v.
allocations. Also, consistently review the implementation to be sure of the anticipated outcome.
Considering the implementation can also help isolate the possibility of adjustments in line with the
budget objectives (Wyatt, 2013).
Effective Budgeting and the Positive Financial Outcome
The fundamental importance of proper budgeting strategies goes beyond corporate investment
decision making. It includes positive financial outcomes in as far as the financial goals are
concerned. One of the positive outcomes is eliminating a fiscal crisis. Financial forecasting
particularly helps analyze the current trends in the business and

Effects Of The Silver Bow Creek Copper
Copper is another pollutant that at very high levels is toxic and can cause vomiting, diarrhea,
loss of strength or, for serious exposure, cirrhosis of the liver (Pure Water Services). In order for
copper to metabolized the heavy metal zinc is needed. Zinc helps with copper breakdown but too
much zinc can cause a copper deficiency which can also cause problems such as anemia. While
copper has some severe side effects there have not been any cases that are related to cancer. In most
cases throughout the Silver Bow Creek copper is not thought to be a severe threat to the community.

As people began to realize the damage done by the pollution of the environment nearly fifty years
had passed. By this time the contaminated tailings and toxins released from the smelters and
chemical treatment facilities had reached an outrageous numbers. With the help of the great flood
of 1908 these pollutants covered the Silver Bow creek banks from Butte all the way to the
Milltown Dam. In 1911 the Anaconda Company began extensive cleanup efforts by implementing
the use of warm springs ponds as a water treatment facility (Citizens Technical Environmental
Committee, 4). These ponds were developed initially with the thought that they would be able to
catch polluted tailings before they were able to reach the Clark Fork River. There was an
estimated 2,400 acres of warm springs ponds built between the years of 1911 and 1959 (Citizens
Technical Environmental Committee, 4). The settling ponds were created to hold the mining
wastes, acting as a dam so that the metals did not end up in the Clark Fork River. The tailings are
then covered over with lime to prevent them from leeching back into the environment. This series
of warm springs ponds provides treatment to the water in such a way that the environment can
cleanse the water of pollutants on its own instead. This treatment method is accomplished with the
water being further cleansed as it is transferred from pond to pond. The

Although there is not much competition in this market, consumers always have alternate methods
of receiving the same services and more than likely the same quality of services elsewhere.
Whether it is choosing to stream videos online, watching them via Pay per View or On Demand it
is truly a buyer s market considering the services rendered aren t considered necessities.
V. Barriers to Entry
It appears that Netflix has control over the vast majority of the movie rental business. Consumers
are renting less than they used to and the convenience that Netflix incorporates into its service, such
as online streaming and mail orders eliminates other competitors from considering entering the
movie rental business.
2. What forces are driving changes in the movie rental industry? Are the combined impacts of these
driving forces likely to be favorable or unfavorable in term of their effects on competitive intensity
and future industry profitability?
The forces driving change in the movie rental industry are as follows:
the economy
cheaper and more convenient alternatives such as cable/ satellite providers offering recordings via
DVR, cell phones, tablets and other electronic devices
Vast changes in technology.
The forces that are driving change are more than likely going to be unfavorable to the movie rental
industry considering the convenience and included perks of choosing them. I ve had experience in

Religious Characters in The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer
*Works Cited Not Included
When thinking of the figures in the church, they are thought to be loyal, respectful, giving, and
dedicated. Sadly to say this, but not all figures follow that description. In
The Canterbury Tales , Chaucer shows the corruption of the church in the medieval period through
some of his characters, particularly through the Nun, the Monk, and the Friar. Yet, Chaucer does
show one character, the Parson, as goodness and holiness in the church. Nuns are member of a
religious order for women, living in a convent under vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Their
orders vary in the stipulations of the vows, some being permanent, and others only for ... Show

One positive point is that she does have a clean mouth and watches what she says. Monks have
abandoned the world for religious reasons and devote their lives, either separately or in a
community, to spiritual perfection. The vows of celibacy, poverty, and obedience under which
they live, are termed the religious counsels. A person bound by such vows is known as a religious.
Chaucer s Monk s sport was hunting. The Rule of good Saint Benet or Saint
Maur (Prologue, 177) says hunters are not holy men (Prologue, 182). He does not keep to his
studies, but instead would rather be doing labor. In addition, he holds worldly possessions, such as
his wrought gold cunningly fashioned pin (Prologue,
200), which shows that he has money. Friars differ from monks, in that the monk was attached to a
specific community within which he led a withdrawn life, having no direct contact with the secular
world.
Friars, on the other hand, belonged to no particular monastic house, but to a general order and
worked as an individual in the non religious world. Thus, friars and monks are not on synonymous
terms. Friars are members of certain religious orders who practice the principles of monastic life
and devote themselves to the service of humanity in the secular world.
Originally, their rules forbid holding either community or personal property. The resulting
dependence of friars on voluntary

  • 2. Analysis Of The Movie Butterfield Stars Essay Butterfield stars as Bruno, a curious, stubborn eight year old whose family is relocated to the countryside when his father receives a new job as a head member of the Nazi party, working for the Auschwitz Birkenau concentration camp. Lonely and frustrated from having no one his own age to talk to, Bruno explores past the limits of his backyard. He comes across a barbed wire fence, with a young boy named Schmuel (played by Scanlon) on the other side wearing what Bruno perceives to be striped pajamas. The two boys strike up a friendship through the fence, with Bruno coming to visit Shmuel almost daily. Neither boy grasps that Schmuel is in a death camp, and when Schmuel confesses to Bruno that he is Jewish, Bruno doesn t not seem to understand why that matters. Curious as to what really lies on the other side of the fence, Bruno and Schmuel plot for him to sneak into the camp, which leads to the demise of both of them. The film is more emotion based rather than fact based, in an attempt to appeal to the audiences symphonies rather than instruct them on a historical event. It has been criticized for its accuracy, specifically pertaining to the ages of the boys. Many critics claim that boys as young as Schmuel would never have been at Auschwitz, because all children too young to work were gassed upon arrival. Others argue that the film is symbol of innocence, and the two boys reflect how children are able to look past each other s differences easier than adults. Critics also ... • 3. On-Campus Garden Persuasive Essay Sustainability is something we talk about a lot. It s taught to kids in elementary and middle schools now, but when I was in primary school it was not heavily focused on. There has been shift in priorities between generations, and I feel that it s very hard to get my generation on board with living in a sustainable manner. I once gave a speech on the importance of recycling that almost put the entire class to sleep. I think this is because my generation does not care, it s not their problem, the idea of the earth not supporting them is not something that has been brought to their doorstep, and in a manner of speaking they are unaware that their actions have negative consequences. My ideas for making the Grand View campus more eco friendly is a three fold process fully incorporated to form a closed loop. First, I believe we should have a(n) on campus garden(s) where students are responsible for caring for crops which could be consumed in the cafeteria or used in a food pantry. Second, we should harvest rainwater for use in the gardens and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The water is stored in the underground tank and then it is cleaned before it is transferred to a 600 gallon holding tank in the basement of the school (Pushard, n.d.). This water is used in the toilets and in the irrigation systems. Any flushed water or overflow rainwater goes into the on site wetlands which are a rubber lined rock filled pond where plants are grown in septic water and the micro organisms and plants feed off the pollutants. The clean water is then pumped into the ground to help recharge the aquifer (Pushard, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Bear Sterns Rise and Fall The rise and fall of Bear Stearns Introduction Bear Stearns, the fifth largest investment bank in US, was established as an equity trading house in 1923 by Joseph Bear, Robert Stearns, and Harold Mayer. Its headquarters was located in New York City with offices in the major US cities, South America, Europe, and Asia, employing more than 13,500 people around the world. The firm survived every major crisis like the Great Depression, World War II, the 1987 market crash, and the 9/11 terrorists attack and never had a losing quarter in its history until December 2007, when Bear Stearns announced the first loss for about $854 million. 1. The result was a private bailout by the major financial firms and supervised by the Federal Reserve. Bankers Trust, Barclays, Chase, Credit Suisse First Boston, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Salomon Smith Barney, and UBS agreed to contribute with $ 300 million each one, while SociГ©tГ© GГ©nГ©rale invested $125 million and Lehman Brothers and Paribas did the same thing with $100 million. The only bank that refused the join the syndicate was Bear Stearns. In the Bear Stearns case, the sudden collapse of the firm and the impossibility to calculate the risk of taking Bear s mortgage holdings forced the Federal Reserve to be involved actively into the bailout instead of the advisory role it took in the LTCM case 10 years earlier. 1.4 What could Bear Stearns have done differently to avoid this fate? In the early 2000 s, after the Federal Reserve dropped the interest rate and raised the money supply trying to control the crisis produced by 9/11 terrorist attacks, the firm s directors should have been more disciplined with the financial strategies, especially the ones related with hedge funds who made poor quality investments. Furthermore, the failure to evaluate the risk, to diversify the portfolio, and to control the use of high leveraging was driven by the need to justify the enormous ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Evolution Of The Modern Day Human Essay The modern day human has not existed for very long, in fact its one of the recent species to populate the Earth. Before modern day humans or Homo sapiens sapiens as we are scientifically known as, existed a similar yet less developed Homo genus named Homo erectus/ Homo ergaster. Evidence of these species dates back to over 1.9 million years ago and up to as recently as 70,000 years ago in which the evidence can be found in Africa, Europe and Asia. In this essay I will firstly provide a general timeline, providing key dates and phases of evolution. I will then discuss my findings from the research I have collected as well as information provided by expert insights and discoveries. I will explain the cause for the expansion from Africa to Europe and Asia and lastly I will elaborate on the established branches of Homo erectusand how the different Homo genus came to exist. Timeline The Homo genus dates back almost three million years. The Homo habilis species was the first in the Homo genus and is believed to have initially developed 2.8 mya (million years ago) in East Africa before becoming extinct 1.5 mya. This occurred during the Lower Paleolithic period (2.7 mya 200 kya) in which the very first stone tools were created and mastered named the Oldowan stone industry. H. habilis were the first fully bipedial species which allowed them to travel further than their quadrupedial ancestors. Having covered most of Africa, the H. habilis was then able to manufacture stone tool ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Great Depression was the worst economic downturn in the history of the industrialized world, lasting from 1929 to 1939 ( Great Depression ). There were many great factors that lead to The Great Depression, and also, some people and events that helped finish it. The stock market crash, banking system failure, and unemployment are some of the many events to cause The Great Depression. From The Great Depression, the federal government has learned many lessons from the past and has created systems to prevent it from reoccurring in the future. In May, the Tennessee Valley Authority Act allowed the federal government to build dams to control flooding and to generate hydroelectric power. Congress passed a bill that same month that paid farmers who farmed basic products to leave their fields in hopes to raise prices of goods. In June, the National Industry Recovery Act guaranteed workers to be able to unionize for higher wages and better work conditions. Along with the National Industrial Recovery Act, it established a public works administration. The Glass Steagall Act effectively separated commercial banking from investment banking and created the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, among other things. It was one of the most widely debated legislative initiatives before being signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in June 1933 (9). This act was a very important act for banks across the nation. The bill was designed to prevent the diversion of funds for other purposes, provide a safer and more effective use of assets of banks, and to regulate interbank control. • 7. Scottish Independence Should Scotland become Independent? Scotland is at a turning point. On 18th September 2014 a referendum will be held asking voters a simple yes/no question: Should Scotland be an independent country? It has become more apparent that Scotland does not benefit from being part of the union with England, Wales and Northern Ireland and as a consequence of this many people agree that Scotland would be better off as an independent country. Some say the union is no longer fit for purpose and it is holding Scotland back. But many people oppose these views saying Scotland needs the rest of the UK and the economic and social factors of independence would be too great to deal with. Independence for Scotland means that we will have the right to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Becoming independent would therefore arguably be a step for democracy and for the health and recovery of its economy. The majority of laws which are put in place in Scotland are decided and passed in Westminster by English politicians who will not be affected by these laws and are intended primarily for England without much consideration for Scotland. At present Scotland has a government that runs lots of Scottish affairs but has one hand tied behind its back with ones not in their control such as taxation and fiscal policies. Although Scotland already has control over its own parliament and legal system, it still has no control over its own defence and security. My favourite news recently is that nuclear warheads were transported through Glasgow even though MSPs condemned strongly against this and without informing the local authorities. The MoD recently carried out a mock emergency exercise which took them five hours to complete the task and if something bad had happened with just one of those warheads Glasgow would be uninhabitable for years and years. • 9. Comparing The Imp Of The Perverse And The Tell-Tale Heart Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most recognizable literary figures in 19th century American literature. Poe is most well known for his short stories that focus on a psychologically unhinged character who murders an innocent person without motive and eventually cracks under pressure before the police, ultimately turning himself in for the crimes he committed. Two such stories that follow this theme are The Imp of the Perverse and The Tell Tale Heart . The Imp of the Perverse begins unlike many of Poe s other short stories; it appears to be a serious essay about phrenology, a science that sought to determine the relationship between character and skull morphology. However, the short story quickly transitions into a format that Poe would continue to use throughout his other stories. Once phrenology has been explained, the narrator declares that he has fallen victim to the imp of the perverse, which he contends is an innate and primitive principle of human action, or an instinct, that prompts an individual to be self destructive (Poe, The Imp of the Perverse, 281). In The Imp of the Perverse, the narrator murders a man using a poisoned candle that emits poisonous gas/smoke. The narrator admits that his plan was premeditated and that [f]or weeks, for months, I pondered upon the means of murder. I rejected a thousand schemes, because their accomplishment involved a chance of detection (283). Thinking he has gotten away with murder, the narrator declares, I am safe I ... Simply put, Mercenaries are nothing new. However only in the last 60 or so years has a new, modern form of mercenarywork come into practice. Modern mercenaries today often function in the form of a Private MilitaryCorporation or PMC. After successfully using Private Military Companies in Vietnam, the United States continued their use, doling out contracts to corporations during the later Cold War Era. During this time many United State PMCs were tied to tasks too dirty for the U.S. government. (Avant) The use of private military companies has continued ever since and has only grown in scale. Other than the size of the Industry, not much has changed in PMCs. They still receive funding mainly from their clients, who are often national governments, and from their investors if they are publicly held corporations. In terms of the size of the market, the PMC market was expected to grow in net revenue from $55.6 billion to $202 billion between the years of 1990 and 2010. These predictions had merit especially in the 90s when the stock value of public PMCs grew two times faster than the Dow Jones Industrial Average (Avant). Since their inception private military companies have claimed to provide services of elite and precise military force for nations and organizations; these organizations claim that they are better suited for the job than a military and they do not shy away from the fact that they are motivated entirely by money. Erik Prince comes to the defence of PMCs, as he is the founder and CEO of perhaps the best known PMC in the world, Blackwater. He says on the matter of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Motivation And Intrinsic Motivation All children are unique and learn in different ways, however, when it comes to their motivation they will most likely fall into one of two categories. Extrinsic motivation revolves around grades and points and competition, and intrinsic motivation stems more from personal interests, sense of belonging, and passion to grow. (Carol Dweck). Roman, an 11 year old high functioning autistic child, had no desire to participate in any class learning when I began working with him. When rules are provided to the children in an autonomy supportive way (explanatory rationales, and acknowledgment of the children s perspectives and feelings) there is no decrease in engagement as opposed to children who do not have their input included. (Skinner and Belmot 1999). Personal interest, opinions, and overall intrinsic factors are why Roman started becoming eager and excited to engage and try new things. Including more team based activities helped Roman feel a sense of belonging and safety. Maintaining a high ratio of positive statements as well as expressing respect for all students, builds trust in the classroom. (Evertson, C. M., Emmer, E. T). By implementing activities that had more of a collaborative process, peer encouragement and help were more evident and motivation can increase when everyone feels safe and helps each other. (Hagelskamp, C. 51 (3 4), 530 54). Roman began not fearing participating in activities once he knew that everyone supported each other and their input. • 14. America s The Fourteenth Amendment July 9, 1868, the day the Fourteenth Amendment was ratified and establish into the Constitution. On this day, the Federal Government granted citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States. This all changed on October 3, 1965 when Lyndon Johnson passed the Hart Celler Immigration Bill. When this bill passed, it allowed politicians to redefine the way the Fourteenth Amendment was written. The obvious reason politicians would want to take advantage of this is for votes. If you have illegal aliens coming into the country and politicians granting them citizenship, the aliens are more than likely going to vote in favor of the politician that allowed them to accommodate with ease. This not only transformed the law and Constitution, but America itself. In consequence of America letting an undocumented amount of illegal aliens in, it has given a new blueprint to the country as a whole. Immigrants who come to America no longer have to assimilate to American culture, civilization or ethnicity. Instead, Americans have to homogenize themselves to the foreign customs of the substantial amount of immigrants entering the nation. With all this all of this being taken into consideration, I believe there are four things that America could do and should do to reclaim and solidify the American way. These four are as follows: secure the border, e Verify ALL employment, strengthen the way jobs and financial benefits are given to the public, and enforce the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. Mechanisms Of Logistic Growth In Relation To Locust Swarms Exponential Growth is shaped in a J form, this type of growth curve occurs when supplies and materials to a specific population are abundant. Since usually environments are not idealized and resources are limited, exponential growth curve doesn t occur as much as a logistic growth curve. Logistic growth is a type of growth curve,in a S form, that occurs more often in an environment. Since each environment has a carrying capacity, which is the number of individuals from a population an environment can hold, the logistic growth is the most logical way to represent a population size over time. An example of a population size that could be represented by an exponential growthcurve are mice. Since mice reproduce many offspring at the time of reproduction the population size will exponentially grow, however since mice also have a high predation rate the exponential curve starts rapidly decreasing over a period of time. An example of a population size that could be represented by a logistic growth curve are lions. Usually when lions reproduce only a few offspring are created. Symbolism In The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In Heaven Sherman Alexie s book The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven was written using a multitude of literary devices to explain what it is like to be a native American. The novel Alexie has written is a combination of vignettes to show the life of Native American people through symbolism and other literary devices. In the vignette The Fun House Alexie uses various symbols to present and describe things in this vignette. It is in this vignette where Alexie brings the creek into the book. Alexie uses the Tshimakain creek as a symbol to express that you needto look within yourself to find the strength to change. The creek in a sense is the symbol for change itself. Alexie uses the character of the aunt, Nezzy, to reveal how bad her life is on the reservation. Her husband is a drunk and has gotten into reoccurring car accidents, as indicated on page 79, where am I The hospital Again? Yeah, again . After she gave birth to her son, had her tubes tied unwillingly by the doctors, to prevent her from having any more kids. They lied to her to get her to agree to have her tubes tied. They told her it was to prove she was Indian, but in reality, it was a dishonest trick. Alexie shows that Nezzy s husband and son are very demanding, for she says, you re just a couple of ungrateful shits (Alexie 77). They take advantage of her. They just let her do everything and don t think that they need to do anything to help her. Her husband and son also don t help her. She asks on page 77 why the son didn t help her, and the son couldn t stop laughing. This is the point Nezzy realizes that she needs change. The creek represents change. It represents the washing away of the bad stuff and carrying it far away. Creeks never rest and they never stop changing. Creeks and rivers change the scenery and the landscape around them, they do the likewise for people, washing away the weights and the corrupt things of people to create something new. Nezzy is ready for change, so she looks to herself to find the strength to do so. In one occurrence, she is merely lying in the creek. • 21. Business Intelligence Is The Broadest Category And... Business Intelligence is the broadest category and encompasses the other three terms here (at least as they re used in a business IT context). BI is data driven decision making. It includes the generation, aggregation, analysis, and visualization of data to inform and facilitate business management and strategizing. All the other terms refer to some aspect of how information is gathered or crunched, while BI goes beyond the data to include what business leaders actually do with the insights they glean from it. BI therefore is not strictly technological; it involves the processes and procedures that support data collection, sharing, and reporting, all in the service of making better decisions. One of the trends in recent years has been away from systems that rely on IT staff to provide reports and graphs for decision makers toward what s called self service BI tools that allow business users to generate their own reports and visualizations to share with colleagues and help everyone choose what course to take. After visiting vaccine programs in sub Saharan Africa, Gates would frequently ask women at remote clinics what else they needed. Very often, she says, they would speak urgently about birth control. In July, the Bill Melinda Gates Foundation teamed up with the British government to cosponsor a summit of world leaders in London, to start raising the $4 billion the foundation says it will cost to get 120 million more women access to contraceptives by 2020. Right now, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is funding research into contraceptives that women could inject themselves, sparing them numerous clinic trips. Aware that many women reject the birth control pill because of side effects, the foundation is investing in a search for a contraceptive medication that works without hormones. In any case, Melinda Gates has by far universally, influenced the world itself as well as the individuals in it. From contributing to affordable education for all to providing healthcare towards countless people, Melinda has constructed a global community connected by genuine human compassion. History of Chinese Students Studying Abroad or in the U.S. Introduction: history of Chinese students studying abroad in U.S. The history of Chinese students studying in American universities dates back to the mid 1850s, when the first student, Yung Wing, graduated from Yale University in 1854 (Bartlett and Fischer Para. 8). After that. Qin Dynasty starts sending Chinese students to learned new sciences and technologies and we called Westernization Movement . The educational missions to the US were organized in the 1870s to train specialists who would create better engines and iron hulls for Chinese ships (Bartlett and Fischer Para. 8). The 1870s mission involved about 120 students, who were sponsored to study at the United States top universities. Since the 1870s, the number of Chinese students in American colleges has grown exponentially to become the largest population of foreign students in the US (Institute of International Education [IIE] 7). After the Qing court s resistance to reform and by China s weakness, Sun Yat Sen led a revolutionary military uprising. During the regime changing time, people really didn t know what democracy is. Since the invention of the Internet, people have become indulged with its copious functions, from making advanced programs to learning how to do new projects to social media. Social media has evolved over the years, from Friendster to Myspace to Facebook, since the late 1990s, and people have incorporated it into their lives. It is the modern way for people to connect and communicate with anyone and everyone across the globe. Plus, social media is everywhere; people utilize it when they are on the bus, at the checkout line, and even when they are using the restroom. In Peggy Orenstein s The Way We Live Now: I Tweet, Therefore I Am, she propounds that social media has altered society. Social media has changed society s priorities, characteristics, and mentality. We live in a world now where we have never been more connected while being more alone. Instead of spending hours on the phone or with our close friends and family, it is now much more convenient to simply tweet, Instagram, or post our feelings on Facebook. Orenstein reveals while she is spending time with her daughter, a part of my consciousness had split off and was observing the scene from the outside: this was, I realized excitedly, the perfect opportunity for a tweet (Orenstein, 347). Orenstein made the conscious, yet somehow detached, decision to post her personal life on social media, instead of fully indulging in the moment. Animals are being stripped for their parts and left for dead. Poaching has completely exhausted animal populations in Africa, which damages the environment, and is affecting people all over the world both socially and through international relations. Poaching is a growing activity in Africaand it is dangerously depleting animal populations. Poaching is defined as the illegal killing of endangered and/or protected animals and could also be considered hurting animals that are on protected land (Pedersen). If poaching is continued, years of conservation and development would have been for nothing. For years, groups have put work and money into keeping animals safe. Many people turn to poaching as an activity because it s a quick way to make a lot of money as tusks of a single adult elephant can be worth more than ten times the average annual income in many African countries . Rhino poaching rates were up 1000% at the beginning of the decade and is continuing to grow quickly ( The African Poaching Crisis ). Many, many animals and people are affected by this poaching. How Did Elizabeth Pinncney Influence The Economy Elizabeth Pinckney is perhaps one of the most influential people when it comes to agriculture in the early U.S. as she established indigo as a new cash crop, first for South Carolina, then the rest of the South. Her discovery and the tests that she conducted in botany helped the agricultural economy in the South grow and soon flourish. Eliza Lucas was born in Antigua in the West Indies in 1722 and was the eldest child of Lt. Colonel George Lucas and Ann Lucas. She had 3 other siblings; her brothers, Thomas and George, and her sister Mary. Eliza was in no way born in poverty as her family was well set, owning 3 sugarcane plantations. She grew up on one of these plantations and lived an average life like everyone else and was soon, along with the rest of her siblings, sent to receive schooling in England as this was the usual thing for elite colonists to do when their children reached a certain age. Rogier remained in Campin s studio for five years, becoming an independent master of the guild on August 1, 1432. Van der Weyden was not permitted to sell his artwork while studying in Campin s shop. It was in Bruges, where Rogier may have resided between 1432 and 1435, that he became thoroughly acquainted with van Eyck s style (http://humanitiesweb.org). The spiritual essence of a scene was displayed with similar technical virtuosity by Van der Weyden. His international renown was exceeded only by that of Hugo van der Goes, who united van Eyck s naturalism with penetrating studies of humanity(Eyewitness Books, Renaissance, 20.) Rogier may well have also been influenced by the writings of Thomas a Kempis, the most popular theologian of the era, whose quot;practical mysticism, quot; like Rogier s paintings, stressed empathetic response to episodes from the lives of Mary, Christ, and the saints (http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint /auth/weyden/). By translating the main ideas of Gothic Art into the new, lifelike style, Rogier did a great service to northern art. In 1712, the infamous William Lynch delivered a speech on the banks of the James River in the colony of Virginia, named, The Making Of A Slave. Schopenhauer s Criticism of Kant s Analysis of Object Essay Schopenhauer s Criticism of Kant s Analysis of Object Schopenhauer makes it clear that he is indebted to Kant for his vision of transcendental idealism, and that his Critique of Pure Reason [2] is a work of genius. However, Schopenhauer argued that Kant made many mistakes when formulating his philosophy, and he set about the task of uncovering them in his Criticism of the Kantian Philosophy, an appendix to be found in The World as Will and Representation [1]. Only with the concept of the chair does the chair become known. Concepts are essential if we are to perceive the world: in no other way can an object be given to us [2; B33]. Thus, for Kant, intuition and thought complement one another: thoughts without content are empty, intuitions without concepts are blind [2; B75]. The scope of the concept of object goes further than the example I have given immediately suggests: it does not just deal with an object that I perceive at one particular time, but can deal with the object at different times, and at different positions in space. Thus, to take the example of the particular chair I am looking at, the same concept of the chair synthesizes my immediate intuition, along with the chair as it was yesterday when, I recall, it was in another room, and also with any expectation I have of the chair tomorrow. The concept is able to synthesize all of these manifold phenomena across time and space. It picks out those features that make it the same chair; for example, that it is a particular shape and colour, and that it has a particular scratch mark on one of its legs. Bringing Thinking into Perception Schopenhauer s first criticism of Kant is that he brings thinking into perception [1; p.439]. In 1911 the Anaconda Company began extensive cleanup efforts by implementing the use of warm springs ponds as a water treatment facility (Citizens Technical Environmental Committee, 4).
