Human
Flourishing
RINA R. ROMANO, MA BioEd
• Identify the different conceptions of
Human Flourishing
• Determine the development of the
scientific method and validity of
science.
• Critic human flourishing vis-à-vis
progress of science and technology
to be able to define for themselves
the meaning of a good life
Is happiness a
journey or a
destination?
• What makes you happy?
• Which matters to you more,
health or wealth?
• What is your basis to say
someone is prosperous?

positive or pleasant
emotions ranging
from contentment to
intense joy
polar opposite of suffering, the
presence of happiness

we do something
good or positive
experience of a flood of
hormones released in the brain
as a reward for behavior that
prolongs survival
Eudaimonia
 a term that combines the Greek words for
"good" and "spirit" to describe the ideology
 defines happiness as the pursuit of
becoming a better
 Eudaimonist do this by challenging
themselves intellectually or by engaging in
activities that makes them spiritually richer
people
 Eudaimonia literally mean ”good
spirited”, a term coined by Aristotle to
describe the pinnacle of happiness that
is attainable by humans.; has often been
translated to “HUMAN FLOURISHING”
 Aristotle believed that human
flourishing requires a life with other
people. Aristotle taught that people
acquire virtues through practice and
that a set of concrete virtues could lead
a person toward his natural excellence
and happiness.
 According to Aristotle there is an end to
all of the actions that we perform which
we desire for itself. This is what known
as eudaimonia, flourishing or happiness.
 FLOURISHING is the highest good of
human endeavors and that toward
which all actions aim. It is success as
human being.
“The best life is one of excellent human
activity”
“The very concept of our happiness cannot
be achieved without science
Wisdom- is from scientific refinements
Wealth- is given birth through scientific
discovery
Power- was developed through the
complexities of societal developments
 Phronesis- cannot be possible if we
cannot enjoy the discoveries made by
science
Phronesis Wealth
Friendship Power
 As time changes, elements that comprise human
flourishing has changed.
 People found means to live comfortably, explore more
places, develop more products, and make more money.
 Humans of today are expected to become “man of the
world”
 Supposed to situate himself in a global neighborhood,
working side by side among institutions and the
government to be able to reach a common goal
 Competition as a means of survival has become a passé
 Collaboration is the new trend
 Every discovery, innovation, success, contributes to our pool
of human knowledge; human’s perpetual need to locate
himself in the world by finding proofs to trace evolution;
 The end goals of both science and technology and human
flourishing are related; in that the good is inherently related
to the truth, are two concepts about science which ventures
on its claim on truth;
What is
Science?
 The intellectual activity encompassing the system of
study of structure and behavior of physical and
natural world trough observation and experiment.
 A systematically organized body of knowledge on a
particular object.
 Is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes
knowledge in the form of testable explanations and
predictions about the universe,.
 The earliest criterion that distinguishes philosophy
and science
 The idea proposes that a discipline is science if it can
be confirmed or interpreted in the event of an
alternative hypothesis being accepted.
 Several budding theories that lack empirical results
might shut down prematurely, causing slower
innovation and punishing ingenuity of newer, novel
thoughts
 This theory completely fails to weed out bogus
arguments that explain things coincidentally
 Karl Popper is the known proponent of this view
 Asserts that as long as an ideology is not proven to
be false and can best explain a phenomenon over
alternative theories
 Allowed emergence theories otherwise rejected by
verification theory
 Encourages research in order to determine which
among the theories can stand the test of falsification
 A new school of thought on the proper demarcation
criterion of science emerged
 Explores the social dimension of science and
effectively, technology
 The new view perpetuates a dimension which
generally benefits the society. Science cease to belong
solely to gown wearing bespectacled scientist at
laboratories
 People who do not understand science are won over
when the discipline is able to produce results.
 In this particular argument, however, science is not the
only discipline which is able to produce results-
religion, luck, and human randomness are some of its
contemporaries in the field.
 For some communities without access to science, they
can turn tom divination and superstition and still get
the same results.
 Science is not entirely foolproof, such that it is 100%
correct all the time.
 Understanding Science and Scientific Revolution
 Intellectual revolutions that defined society:
a. Copernican
b. Darwinian
c. Freudian
d. Information
e. Meso-American
f. Asian
g. Middle East
h. African

  1. In psychology, happiness is a mental or emotional state of well-being which can be defined by, among others, positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. • To behaviorists, happiness is a cocktail of emotions we experience when we do something good or positive. • To neurologists, happiness is the experience of a flood of hormones released in the brain as a reward for behavior that prolongs survival. • The hedonistic view of well-being is that happiness is the polar opposite of suffering, the presence of happiness indicates the absence of pain. Because of this, hedonists believe that the purpose of life is to maximize happiness, which minimizes misery.
