Evaluation of the Business Model for Wal Mart.Com
Evaluation of the business model for Wal Mart.com. Is it a successful model? Wall Mart is using the
click and mortar business model, it is a multi channel business model that leverages the best of both
online and offline operations. One of the advantages of this model is that it offers products and
services through multiple channels: through its brick and mortar stores and online store. In addition,
most of the products offered by Walmart.com have successful e tailing characteristics. They are
relatively inexpensive items, frequently purchased items, commodities with standard specifications
and well know packaged items. The site offers superior service in the form of extensive information:

Wal Mart s fears of cannibalization are unsubstantiated as current online buying trends and patterns
indicate that many customers still prefer to use physical stores. Higher end customers that shop at
Futreshop.com still do majority of their shopping at the physical stores. Regarding the target segment
Walmart.com is trying to reach; recent research indicates that profitability is closely related to local
strategy. (Harvard Business Review, September 2005) Local environments still have different tastes,
business practices, cultural norms and other characteristics. Simply offering internet connection to
those customers may not be enough to create consistent online sales form them. Local retailers may
server these segments better and offer customized services due to their small customer base.
Therefore, Walmart.com is facing two obstacles: local retailers and customer buying habits. Changing
them may prove to be a difficult undertaking. SWOT analysis approach Strengths: 1. Walmart.com has
an alliance with the master of retail process: Wal Mart. Having the best process and infrastructure
when it applies to supply chain is definitely a competitive advantage. Walmart.com can take advantage
of back end operations and inventory management processes through its alliance with Wal Mart. 2.
Established knowledge about its customers their needs and demands. Walmart.com realizes that
median household income of an online consumer is higher than that of its regular

Physics of a Car Essay
Physics of a Car
The average driver doesn t think about what keeps their car moving or what keeps them on the road,
but that s because they don t have to. The average driver doesn t have to worry about having enough
downforce to keep them on the road or if they will reach the adhesive limit of their car s tires around a
turn. These are the things are the car designers, professional drivers, racing pit crews, serious sports
car owners, and physicist think about. Physics are an important part of every sports and racing car
design. The stylish curves and ground effects on sports cars are usually there not just for form but

Negative lift is created by front and rear wings on race cars and by ground effects and spoilers on the
average sports car. Most negative lift is used to fight inertia as a car rounds a turn. Inertia is the
tendency of an object to remain in the same state of motion (Murphy 77). When a car rounds a turn at
high speeds it often needs more force than it s weight to resist the car s tendency to keep traveling
straight. The increased downforce puts more weight on the tires helping the tires grip the road. Drag
force is the cost of increasing downforce. Drag force is the force acting on an object in motion in the
opposite direction the object is moving through a fluid (Yager). To most people drag force is simply
known as air resistance. The objective of aerodynamic efficiency is to maximize downforce while
minimizing drag force.
Acceleration and Speed are obviously the two defining characteristics of a fast car. Newton s three
laws of motion are an essential part in determining how fast a car will accelerate and how fast it will
go. Newton s second law is the easiest to understand in relation to a car s acceleration. Newton s
second law mathematically states Force=(mass)(acceleration) (Murphy 78). This law explains why
cars that need to accelerate fast should be relatively light in weight compared to other cars. Removing
mass, such as a bumper, radio or fancy upholstery reduces the weight of

The Hunger Games Movie And Book Comparison Essay
The Hunger Games: Fight to the Finish In the adaptation of the film The Hunger Games and the book
of The Hunger Games they portray very different characteristics. The filmmakers deviated the Hunger
Games scenes in a more dramatic way than before. Representing District 13, Katniss Everdeen and
Peeta Mellark were forced to go and compete in the 74th Hunger Games and fight for their lives. But
as these scenes progressed they both get very captivating and very dramatic in both the book and the

their lives against people from the other twelve districts. Although these scenes are in the both the
book and film they are different in many ways. They had never seen, or had contact, with any of the
other tributes that they were fighting against before this event. The scene leading up the Hunger

Katniss and Peeta are at the Capitol they are to go out and show off who they are at the tribute parade.
Before Peeta and Katniss go out into the tribute parade, Peeta suggests that they should hold hands

Television, Television And Public Places
1a. It is very important to draw comparison between the internet, library, television and public places
as a result of the fact the internet can also be considered or viewed as a public place where information
can be obtained freely at any point in time, and this makes it very important to know what the law says
about this disseminating information to the general public with respect to the first amendment.
Looking at this various medium i.e libraries, television and public places and what the law stipulates
according to the United State constitution the first amendment expressly forbids against depriving
citizens their right to freedom of speech, of press, right to assemble and petition the government. But
in this case emphasis is placed on the freedom of speech. The entire medium stated above has

Mexican Peso Case Study Essay
1. Take a look at Mexico s balance of payments over the past few years. Use the schedule I have
attached to the case it is in the same format as we used to examine the U.S. balance of payments. What
do the trade and current account balances suggest about the likelihood of a potential devaluation of the
peso? Why? a. It suggests that because Mexico is importing twice as much as they are exporting that
there is a strong chance that the peso will lose value to counter the constant increase in imports. It is
also important to point out that the exports in 1974 and 1975 are practically the same. The current
account balance is negative 4 billion U.S. dollars which is 4 times larger than it was in 1972. All this

however I would not believe that the peso is at risk of being devaluated. 5. Take a look at Exhibit 7
and the forward discounts on the peso versus the dollar. On June 18, what did the market think the
peso was likely to do over the next three months? On August 27, what did the market think the peso
was likely to do versus the dollar over the next three months? Between June and August, what was the
market saying about the magnitude and/or probability of a devaluation of the peso over the next three
months? a. On June 18th it was believed that over a 3 month period that the peso would depreciate
20% vs. the U.S. dollar and on August 27th it was believed that the peso would only depreciate 9.08%
over the same time frame. During that time frame the market thought there was a less and less chance
that the peso was going to get devaluated. 6. Look at the commercial bank lending rates to prime
borrowers in Exhibit 8. Based on these nominal prime borrowing rates, would you expect the peso to
appreciate or depreciate against the dollar and by how much? Why? a. If using the December
1975lending rates, the peso would depreciate against the dollar by 5.9% because Mexico s interest rate
is nearly twice as high as the United States . 7. What should be the PPP Mexican

Church, Cultures And Leadership, Mark Lau Branson And Juan...
In their book, Churches, Cultures and Leadership, Mark Lau Branson and Juan F. Martinez point out
the perspective of Practical Theology. (Part 1, 39) They also explain the purpose of Interpretive
Leadership. (133) Their stories helped me understand how the circumstances challenge church leaders.
(Introduction, 19)
The authors focus on the continuous practice of reflective discernment, to help church leaders learn
what is the idea required for a church to depend on God. (39) One of the authors named Mark
mentions an instance when he as a university chaplain intern, was invited by an African American
student and experienced a group prayer. Because Mark was a Scotch Irish, his initial experience of
prayer in this group of students made no sense to him. Later he realized that it was the use of language
that had left a different impression on Mark. Also, he felt that his own theology in comparison to one
of the students named Keith who invited him was not the same. (40)The author Mark mentions that
after his reflective discernment, Keith s theology started making sense to him and differences that
seemed differences to him in theology, began changing. This instance, reminds me when I first visited
the Evanston Vineyard, a non denominational church, which is the same church where I am serving as
a Pastoral Intern. The first time I attended a service here, I noticed an African American woman
responding in words to the pastor s sermon. At first, I felt very annoyed, after

Wedman spoke of the help the community did for his family. Laverna in Kansas could not raise a child
and work the farm. His neighbors, his parents and his sisters all pitched in and worked extra hard to
keep the family farm running. With the war across seas and the absence of some of the town s men
Arkansas City faced much hardship. It was a heavy load for them to carry but they knew they had to
and they knew eventually everything would be okay.
Wedman did not stay in the Mt. Della area for long. He was shipped to the Po River Valley in Italy.
Wedman s time in the Po Valley was not spent in combat like that of Mt Della, but was spent building
a bridge that crossed the river so troops and tanks could continue moving through Italy. Wedman
described the area as much less intense and he was still able to keep in contact with his wife. He said
he had more time to think and more time to become homesick. As homesick as he was he managed to

The Importance Of Physical Beauty In Cyrano De Bergerac
In today s day and age, people are judged not on their inner beauty, but rather, their physical beauty.
This desire to hold judgement against outer beauty slowly ruins self confidence. In Cyrano de
Bergerac this judgement on outer beauty makes the characters feel insecure about their weaker
qualities. This is demonstrated by Cyrano s belief that people think lowly of him because of his
appearance. In contrast, Christian finds himself physically attractive but, with little eloquence and
fears his handsome looks is all people see of him. And finally, Roxanne contributes to this issue by
expressing her judgement on people based on their looks.
Appearance does not portend everything, but in most cases, is the quality that is judged predominately.
Cyrano is an astonishingly intelligent, and well spoken man, but has unappealing looks. His
appearance affects his self confidence considering that he believes everyone looks at him as being an
ugly individual. When Roxanne is explaining the man, she is in love with, Cyrano assumes she is
explaining his characteristics, until she says his face shines with wit and intelligence, he s proud,
noble, young, fearless, handsome... (Cyrano de Bergerac, Rostand, pg. 77). Cyrano hears that the man
is handsome and loses all hope, because to himself he is not considered handsome. Having been
judged about his physical features, his self confidence is poor. Although, he believes his outer beauty
decides on how people envision him, he is a very intelligent individual and has marvelous inside
qualities, which many people recognize and respect. If only he could realize that his outer beauty is
not nearly important as his inner beauty, maybe then he could see how important his strongest
qualities are.
Being well dressed, groomed, and being physically appealing has its perks, as appearance is what a
first impression would be based on if no conversation is involved. But outer beauty does not indicate a
person s personality and intelligence. In regards to Christian, he is a very handsome character, but his
word choice and poetic sensibility are very poor. He is always at a loss of words and believes he is a
dim witted individual, especially when he tells Cyrano that ... I m one of those men

Risks And Risks Of Risk
Questions in analyzing are 5 W s and 1 H (where, what, when, why who and how), what risk are
related to attaining the stated goals? what are the risk of not attaining the goals? who is affected by the
risk? Step 2 evaluate and prioritize the risk At this step, the impact, probability and exposure will be
analyzed and further understanding of the risk aids in evaluating the effect of the hazard correctly and
the consequences of its impact in the agency. The information generated will be acted upon setting
them in levels of priority. The probability of a risk happening has to be greater than zero to be set as a
priority and the impact of a risk is a measure of the degree of detrimental, catastrophic effects and the
degree of loss. Risk ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, because of a clear quantitative metrics that are within a specific threshold and an arrangement to
proceed with the plans, it can be used as a data analysis and does not require an expertise to be able to
construct and utilize a risk matrix. Although some of this benefits are very important, some drawbacks
when using a risk matrix are: insufficient resolution, inaccuracy, inconclusive figures, ineffective for
random decision making and highly negative correlations. The impact of the risk is determined by
using the impact criteria provided below. And the likelihood criteria are used to determine the
likelihood of the hazard occurring. The range of the hazard is further analyzed from the risk matrix by
evaluating the intersection of the impact and likelihood. This will aid in taking the decision of
accepting the risk or not and a risk is usually considered acceptable if it has a very low significant
level. Step 3 determine necessary controls (engineering controls, administrative and work practice

Bacon s Rebellion Essay
In 1676, Nathaniel Bacon rebelled and held a revolt in Colonial Virginia. High taxes, low prices for
tobacco, and resentment against special privileges given those close to the governor, Sir William
Berkeley, provided the background for the uprising. These factors made the rebellion inevitable. All of
the chaos was precipitated by Governor Berkeley s failure to defend the frontier against attacks by
Native Americans. Bacon commanded two unauthorized but successful expeditions against the tribes
and was then elected to the new House of Burgesses, which Berkeley had been forced to convene.
Berkeley then sent out a warrant for his arrest and Bacon was put in jail. Bacon soon was released and
he immediately gathered his supporters, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, closer to home, there were many problems caused by the crazy weather. The constantly
changing weather left the colony and colonists in chaos. Hailstorms, floods, dry spells, and hurricanes
rocked the colony during one year and had a damaging effect on the colonists. Inevitably, these
difficulties encouraged the colonists to find a scapegoat. They needed to find something to vent their
frustrations and place the blame for their misfortunes. With the immense frustration and anger among
the colonists, they began to scapegoat the local Indians. To ward off future attacks and to control the
situation, Governor Berkeley instigated the matter. He set up what was to be a disastrous meeting
between the parties, which resulted in the murders of several tribal chiefs. In the meantime, Berkeley
continually pleaded for restraint from the colonists. Some, including Nathaniel Bacon, refused to
listen. Bacon disregarded the Governor s direct orders by seizing some friendly Appomattox Indians
for stealing corn. Berkeley scolded him, which caused the disgruntled Virginians to wonder which
man had taken the right action. Significantly, Berkeley could not compromise earning resentment from
about 1,000 Virginians. They fiercely resented Governor Berkeley for his policies toward the Indians.

Essay about Race Relations
Humanity has been enduring an ongoing battle for centuries: the strained relations among the races.
Despite efforts to put the past behind, signs remain at nearly every juncture that there still exists a
strong sense of racial dissension. While many Caucasians do not see the problem being as severe as it
is represented, African Americans angrily reply that the lighter skinned race has not had to endure
such prejudice and, therefore, cannot begin to identify with the situation. Frank Newport, vice
president of the Gallup Poll Organization, says Caucasian Americans do not interpret racism as a big
problem, therefore, they do not see a need for government intervention (Anonymous, 1997; 04A).
Similarly, Asians, Hispanics and other United ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sociologist Joe R. Feagin says the answer may lie with both options. His interpretation of the lack of
adolescent racism is that reality has not fully set in for those who have not yet experienced the real
world. You have to be out looking for jobs and housing to know how much discrimination is out there
(Farley, 1997; 88+). Feagin contends that those who have a better grasp of racial reality are those who
are over the age of nineteen. Reasoning behind this is that comparatively few African American
teenage respondents said they had been victimized by discrimination; contrarily, half of the African
American adults admitted they had (Farley, 1997). Experts are concerned that adolescents are being
too gullible when it comes to realizing the truth of the matter. Others contend that perhaps they are
willfully setting a precedence for others to follow that will ultimately initiate a genuine improvement
in race relations. It is not as though contemporary teenagers do not have knowledge of history and its
negative treatment of minority races; rather, it appears they have more faith in their own future than
their parents did before them. Additionally, today s youth are trying to move away from the typical
scapegoating (Farley, 1997; 88+) that has become so commonplace in society. Suspicions

Examples Of Classism In The Outsiders
Classism was a big part of the 60s and with Ponyboy and the gang, it comes into play in more than
one way. The Outsiders, based in the 1960s Oklahoma, is about two gangs, the Greasers and the
Socials. The Greasers were lower class, lower income people who were relatively rough around the
edges while the Socials were the West side rich kids who went around getting drunk and jumping
Greasers. The book is about the conflicts that these two groups have, either with each other or inside
of their own group. In S.E. Hinton s novel, The Outsiders, many of the conflicts and hardships in the
community are caused by the Socials (Socs). The killing of Bob had many different sides but from the
side of the Greasers, it was what they had to do. One example of this was that Johnny was justified in
killing Bob. In the text it states, They were drowning you, Pony. They might have killed you (pg. 50
pdf). This shows that Johnny killed the Bob in self defense and that if they hadn t been drowning
Pony, he probably wouldn t have done it. The text explains, Johnny getting ... Show more content on

therefor, they were the ones who started the rumble. Another example would be that the Socials were
responsible for Johnny s death. The text also states, I held him like Soda had held him the day we
found him lying in the lot (pg. 64 pdf). If you look in the book, you will see that none of what
happened would have happened if it hadn t been for the Socs trying to beat up Johnny and Ponyboy. It

To gain territory a player must completely surround an area on the board with their stones. To count up

board, and how much territory they have. To count territory players need to count how many points
they have surrounded on the board with their stones. The game ends when both players do not see
anymore strategic moves that they can make.
The game go (wei chi) originated in China, but now more than seventy countries play in the annual go

as 2500 to 4000 years (American Go Association). The knowledge of the game s timeline comes from
the mention of go in books, diaries, and documents like Analects of Confucius and The Tale of Genji.
Go has not changed much over time, but Archeological evidence shows that the early game was
played on a board with a 17x17 grid. By the time that the game had spread to Korea and Japan in
about the 7th century, boards with a 19x19 grid had become standard (Wikipedia). According to
legends, either Emperor Yao or Emperor Shun invented go to discipline his sons Dan and Shang Jun,.

Examples Of Cash Flow Statement
The first thing to know about the cash flow statement is its division into three separate sections. A cash
flow statement looks at three components of core operations, investing, and financing in order to come
to the final conclusion.
One of the major distinctions in a cash flow statement, compared to income statement and balance
sheet, is the lack of reporting on future incoming and outgoing cash. Furthermore, some of the things
you won t know in a loss and profit statement, but which feature at the cash flow statement include:
Owner s draws out of the business
Payment of credit card principal
Payment of loan principal
A cash flow looks at only the movements in the three sectors during the determined period, not what is

You can see all the different sections and how the figures are calculated. As you can see, the bottom of
the statement shows the total cash flow of the company for the accounting period.
The above example statement shows you the company total cash flow, as well as where majority of
the liquidity came from.
Naturally, not all cash flow statements show a positive cash flow. But it is important to remember that
a negative cash flow doesn t necessarily mean the business is failing. Sometimes a negative cash flow
is part of a company s decision to heavily invest in new inventory, for example, which might increase
the cash flow the following year. Therefore, as mentioned, you need to use a cash flow statement as

Exercise Prevents Osteoporosis Essay
DiSilvestro et al., 2007, conducted an 8 week study; examining increased micronutrient intake in
young adult women would enhance exercise induced changes in bone metabolism that could lower the
risk of osteoporosis later in life. Subjects were 24 female students 18 24 years old that were overall
healthy and assigned to either the PG (Placebo group, n=12) or MG (micronutrient group, n=12).
Fasting blood and urine samples were taken before and after the 8 week study to determine changes

aerobic training may improve the regulation of calcium levels through the effect on bone that normally

It offers us clues of how to react to certain people and situations. An example is a muslim woman
wearing a hijab. This has been a controversial subject in American society and other nations. Wearing
a hijab is not a part of dominant culture. Therefore, for some people the sight provokes fear, as the
only understanding of the headress is a negative association with islam. Dominant culture exists in
part because people are comforted by the guidelines of a common culture. Our perceptions, however,
may be skewed by dominant culture, like in the instance of the hijab. In the future there will no doubt
be countless other examples of both positive and negative affects of dominant culture and how they
affect opinion and how we communicate with others. But just as the issue of gay marriage, dominant

Essay On Periodontal Disease
Treatment of periodontal disease can be broadly divided into two, non surgical and surgical.
Longitudinal comparison between non surgical and surgical therapy had been studied extensively by
groups of researchers, namely the Gothenburg, the Michigan, the Minnesota, the Nebraska, and the
Arizona group. There are some heterogeneities between studies from different groups. Some studies
focused on single rooted teeth, while others included molars. Majority of the studies are done in a
university setting, while the Arizona study was done in private practices. From the Gothenburg group,
Lindhe et al., carried out a 14 year follow up of 61 out of initially 75 patients after active treatment of
advanced periodontal disease, being defined as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author concluded that with regular periodontal maintenance, removal of root surface accretion for
better periodontal tissue attachment was more important than any surgical procedures. From the
Minnesota group, Pihlstrom et al., studied on 453 teeth, including molar teeth, of 17 patients with
moderate to advanced periodontitis. In the study, scaling and root planing was done, and one maxillary
and one mandibular quadrant of each patient received modified Widman flap. Patients were under
regular periodontal maintenance for a follow up to 6 ½ years. They found that in shallow pockets (1
3mm depth), there was loss of clinical attachments, and this is consistent with other studies; For
pockets with 4 6mm depth, both non surgical and surgical methods were equally effective in pocket
depth reduction, although scaling and root planing had slightly greater clinical attachment level gain;
in deep ( 7mm) pockets, scaling and root planing showed pocket depth reduction for 3 years, modified
Widman flap showed longer reduction for up to 6 ½ years, and both treatments showed effective
attachment gain. Although the non molar teeth tended to respond more favorable, the results indicated
that both treatments were effective in treating periodontitis and maintenance of clinical attachment
levels on molar and non molar teeth. From the Minnesota group, Kaldahl et al., included 82

Essay about The Flood of Noah and the Flood of Gilgamesh
Myths, some parts speculated to be true and many not, have always been part of our lives. However,
as one glances across the different myths of different cultures, one can find that some portion of two
different myths can be eerily similar to each other, causing one to speculate whether they have made
contact with one another long time ago in history. This led to the question that people constantly try to
prove: do myths that have overlapping ideas verify actual historical truths and similar culture between
origins of myths? Almost all myths around the world have the particular section on the Great Flood. It
has been universal, indicating that at some point in their lifetime, all of the cultures experienced a

In the six hundredth year of Noah s life, on the seventeenth day of the second month on that day all
the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened. And rain fell
on the earth forty days and forty nights. Pairs of all creatures that have the breath of life in them came
to Noah and entered the ark. The animals going in were male and female of every living thing, as God
had commanded Noah. Then the Lord shut him in. For forty days the flood kept coming on earth, and
as the waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth. The water rose and increased greatly
on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water. They rose greatly on the earth, and all the
high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. The waters rose and covered the mountains to
a depth of more than twenty feet. Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; men and
animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds of the air were wiped from the
earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark. These verses of the Genesis helps people to
understand the ferocity of the flood at that time, but also offers many questions. Did it truly happen?
Did it really cover entire earth? These questions overtime has been researched and some parts of them
were answered. However, the water covering the entire world is

On The Road Dean Morarty Analysis
In Jack Kerouac s novel On the Road, we meet Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty, two very lost men.
After publishing the novel, many critics commented that Kerouac s novel glorifies the deeds of
criminal young men living irresponsible lives. Because of the low tolerance for rebellious youth,
nowadays most of society would share the critics opinion. As Dean and Sal are adults, most of their
actions are not inappropriate. Though this is true, the more one reads the novel, one sees just how
much of a failure Dean is. Throughout the novel, Dean, Sal, and their friends have many parties.

Comparing Beowulf, The Wanderer, And The 13th Warrior
Ty DeJames
Mr. Neely
4 17 15
One common question in literature that always reappears is What is an epic hero? Or better yet an epic
hero in Anglo Saxon culture. I believe there is more to being a hero than just being strong or
intelligent. An epic hero in my eyes is oneself who comes to portray the beliefs of the society in which
the tale/story is depicted. A few great examples of the Anglo Saxon epic hero are the literary
characters in Beowulf, The Wanderer, and The 13th Warrior. These are all outstanding examples of
Anglo Saxon epic heroes because they all came to show the evident characteristics bravery, loyalty,
friendship. In the Anglo Saxon culture and literature, the meaning of to be a hero was to be a warrior
and or a strong being. A hero also had to possess the vast characteristics of being strong, intelligent,
and courageous. All warriors of Anglo Saxon culture and literature, had to be willing to face any odds
and be willing to be the underdog that chases success. Also they had to fight to the death for their
glory and accept their each individual fates. The typical Anglo Saxon hero was always able to be all of
these and still be humble and very down to earth. Out of all literature Beowulf is, arguably, the best
example one can use of an Anglo Saxon hero. But, in The 13th Warrior, Ibn Fadlan (played by
Antonio Banderas) similar to Beowulf, also shows many of the characteristics that come to show the
qualities one needs to possess to become an Anglo Saxon

How Does Joy Kogawa Show Sacrifice
Obasan Essay Sacrifices are a daily aspect of life throughout the world. Whether big or small all
sacrifices have significance. Giving up something of high value in exchange for another of seemingly
greater value, precedence, and care is to sacrifice, surrender, or forfeit. Obasan, by Joy Kogawa is a
prime representation of the significance and importance of sacrifice in everyday life. Throughout the
trials and tribulations of the Japanese internment, characters in the short story Obasan must make
selfless sacrifices for the sake of others. The nature of these sacrifices highlight specific character

Obasan put forth a valiant effort towards protecting both Naomi and Stephen from the harsh truth of

sacrifice of her voice; which was silence, the language of her grief is silence, she learned it well, its
idioms, its nuances. ( ) Constant was the need for silence in Obasan s life, both for her own protection
and the childrens. With the impeccable responsibility of caring for Naomi and Stephen there also came
a great burden with the understanding that there would never be a real mother and father in their lives
again. Naomi once says to Aunt Emily, Some memories too, might better be forgotten. Didn t Obasan

Obasan imprinted on Naomi, in all this time I ve never seen her cry Naomi says. Obasan loved Naomi

voice was initially to protect, the lack of knowledge being conveyed to the child brought upon many
unanswered questions, Please tell me about Mother , I would say to Obasan. I was consumed by the
question. Devoured alive. But Obasan gave me no answers. I did not have, I never had, the key to the

the harsh but inevitable truths of Naomi and Stephen s parents, similarly she sacrificed rights in order

Kangxi s Valedictory Edict
Emperor Kangxi: Valedictory Edict Emperor Kangxi was considered and still is thought of as one of
the greatest emperors in Chinese history. Kangxi s reign was longer than that of any other ruler in
Chinese history. One of his most notable achievements was uniting China after the turmoil upon the
collapse of the Ming. A main reason for the Chinese granting him the mandate of heaven or granted
the right to rule China from permission of the heavens was his knowledge and respect for Chinese
heritage and culture. Emperor Kangxi recorded a Valedictory Edict in December twenty third, 1717 as
an attempt to display sincere thoughts of what he believed it takes to be a virtuous ruler. Kangxi wrote

In the Valedictory Edict Kangxi views death positively and as a relief from the everyday grind of
virtuously ruling an empire. One of his most virtuous traits is he does not fear death and is comforted
by the idea of relief from the responsibility of his reign through death once his sovereignty as a
virtuous ruler is completed. One of Kangxi s great tasks left to be finished is who is to succeed him.
He views this as a great issue, and as a good emperor cannot neglect it. Kangxi understands the weight
of his decision and I believe he truly wants what is best for China. The issue of an heir seems to be on
the forefront of his mind and this dilemma weighs heavily on his conscience. Kangxi states he wrote a
letter indicating his intention for an heir, but does not go into detail in his Valedictory Edict. There is a
record that Kangxi s son Yinreng was disinherited in 1708. There are stories that emperor Kangxi
heard from his officials, that when touring the country, Yinreng would recruit young men and women
as personal sex slaves as part of a major molestation scandal. This deeply saddened Kangxi and, while
on his death bed, reportedly appointed Yinzhen; Emperor Kangxi s fourth son. Yinzhen s claim to the

Defining Toyota Production System Terms
Some of the various assessment tools used to better assess and evaluate the Toyota Production System
(TPS) are: Andon is a visual or audible system used to notify both management and production
workers when a problem or issue occurs in the production process. The goal of andon is to quickly
identify a problem, and its location, so that the issue may be rectified quickly thus reducing downtime
in the production process. As of 2014 Toyota began to retire what has become known as the andon
cord, or emergency cable, in the auto industry and a symbol of quality for a new push button design.
Yellow buttons placed at waist level and easy to access along the production process have become the
standard. Toyota first switched to push buttons during renovation of the Tsutsumi plant in Japan, but
has not yet switched in North America. Warning lights in hospitals rooms for patient monitoring is a
form of andon. Hoshin is the process of establishing direction, through proper management, and
setting goals and objectives for everyone to achieve. The hoshin process has three parts: select a key
objective, align implementation at all levels, and implement review improve. An example of hoshin
can be seen in the Army whereby individuals and units are given METL (Mission Essential Task List)
task to accomplish at each level in support of the overall objective of the higher objective. These tasks

The Life and Opinions of Tristam Shandy Essay
The term identity is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as blah blah blah . This concept can be
viewed as personal and individual to one s self, and is distinguished as an umbrella term to attributes
such as; consciousness, heritage, name, appearance, and the soul. As Sterne s novel Tristram Shandy
draws influence from John Locke s An Essay of Human Understanding, in which Locke discusses the
origin of personal identity, the individual identity is evidently reflected within the text. The novel
demonstrates Sterne s interpretation of the personal identity through the construction of each of his
unique characterisations. Tristram Shandy discusses the concept and origin of the individuality
identity both reflecting and opposing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sterne can be seen to draw influence from the 18th Century philosopher, John Locke. Locke discusses
the theory that individual identity is formed through consciousness and experience, and not upon the
soul and body; this may show us wherein personal identity consists: not in the identity of substance,
but, as I have said, in the identity of consciousness. (Locke). As Tristram believes the other
misfortunate experiences within his childhood amount to his individual identity, this also suggests an
origin of identity developed from his personal experiences. He believes that experiencing the many
misfortunes such as his accidental naming and castration, disturbance as a homunculus and broken
nose reshape his identity and that he is in a sense doomed to live a misfortunate life. In response to
reading Tristram Shandy alongside the work of Locke, Heather Keenleyside states that such readings
often understand Tristram Shandy as a novelization of Locke s much discussed distinction [...] On this
view, Tristram Shandy follows Locke in arguing for the priority of personal identity over the body and
its associates: the family and the species, birth and death. (Keenleyside, pg117) The protagonist states
that the soul and body are joint sharers in everything they get (Sterne, pg435), composing them as
separate but equal quantities of his

The reason that this story is powerful, however, is because Rose changes. When Ted tells her that he
wants to have a divorce, she sulks for a few days, but then realizes her problem. Calling him over, she
gives him the divorce papers, his name still there, but lacking hers. His shock was appropriate, since
the viewers too felt the same surprise. The story takes a powerful turn, as Rose felt nothing, no fear, no
anger (219). She no longer feared disappointing him and being different from him. She developed
from the little girl who would listen to others, into an adult who made her own decisions. She finally
learned, like her mother, how to swim against the tide. The development of Rose s character aids the
story into being powerful, but there was also another aspect that makes this true. Moreover, Rose s
story is powerful because it holds misfortune that makes the reader upset. Powerful stories do more
than just develop characters; they make the reader understand the character. They make the reader
agonize over the pounds of misfortune piling onto a character s back, forcing them to carry excess
burdens. The two main hardships that burden Rose are the death of her younger brother and her
divorce. Going to the beach with her family, her mother assigns the task of watching over her
youngest sibling, Bing. At first, she does a good job of doing so, teasing him in the process, adding the
sweet comic relief that gives the reader time to laugh and

Essay On Japanese American Internment
Unjustified Internment Internment, putting a person in prison or other kind of detention, generally in
wartime. The Japanese American internment during World War II stemmed from the bombing of the
Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. After the bombing on the West Coast, America had lost their trust
of the Japanese and Japanese Americans. However, many Japanese lived on the West Coast because
they had primarily come for the Gold Rush. Thus, all Japanese Americans were sent to internment
camps out of fear of espionage and such. Was the internment of the Japanese Americans during World
War II reasonable? The Japanese American internment was unjustified because it was unnecessary,
unreasonable, and it was racist. The Japanese American internment did not have a logical reason for its
doing. There is no Japanese problem on the coast, (Munson, 3). Munson states there is no problem on
the West Coast with the Japanese. As a rebuttal , Lt. Gen. DeWitt states in a government report that it
is better to have had this protection and not to have needed it than to have needed it and not to have
had it, (DeWitt, 1). DeWitt proposes the argument that America did it out of fear of another attack by
the Japanese. However, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

It suggests that because Mexico is importing twice as much as they are exporting that there is a strong chance that the peso will lose value to counter the constant increase in imports. It is also important to point out that the exports in 1974 and 1975 are practically the same. (133) Their stories helped me understand how the circumstances challenge church leaders. (Introduction, 19) The authors focus on the continuous practice of reflective discernment, to help church leaders learn what is the idea required for a church to depend on God. (39) One of the authors named Mark mentions an instance when he as a university chaplain intern, was invited by an African American student and experienced a group prayer. Because Mark was a Scotch Irish, his initial experience of prayer in this group of students made no sense to him. Later he realized that it was the use of language that had left a different impression on Mark. Also, he felt that his own theology in comparison to one of the students named Keith who invited him was not the same. (40)The author Mark mentions that after his reflective discernment, Keith s theology started making sense to him and differences that seemed differences to him in theology, began changing. This instance, reminds me when I first visited the Evanston Vineyard, a non denominational church, which is the same church where I am serving as a Pastoral Intern. • 11. The Importance Of Physical Beauty In Cyrano De Bergerac In today s day and age, people are judged not on their inner beauty, but rather, their physical beauty. This desire to hold judgement against outer beauty slowly ruins self confidence. In Cyrano de Bergerac this judgement on outer beauty makes the characters feel insecure about their weaker qualities. This is demonstrated by Cyrano s belief that people think lowly of him because of his appearance. In contrast, Christian finds himself physically attractive but, with little eloquence and fears his handsome looks is all people see of him. And finally, Roxanne contributes to this issue by expressing her judgement on people based on their looks. Appearance does not portend everything, but in most cases, is the quality that is judged predominately. Cyrano is an astonishingly intelligent, and well spoken man, but has unappealing looks. His appearance affects his self confidence considering that he believes everyone looks at him as being an ugly individual. When Roxanne is explaining the man, she is in love with, Cyrano assumes she is explaining his characteristics, until she says his face shines with wit and intelligence, he s proud, noble, young, fearless, handsome... (Cyrano de Bergerac, Rostand, pg. 77). Cyrano hears that the man is handsome and loses all hope, because to himself he is not considered handsome. Having been judged about his physical features, his self confidence is poor. Although, he believes his outer beauty decides on how people envision him, he is a very intelligent individual and has marvelous inside qualities, which many people recognize and respect. If only he could realize that his outer beauty is not nearly important as his inner beauty, maybe then he could see how important his strongest qualities are. Being well dressed, groomed, and being physically appealing has its perks, as appearance is what a first impression would be based on if no conversation is involved. But outer beauty does not indicate a person s personality and intelligence. In regards to Christian, he is a very handsome character, but his word choice and poetic sensibility are very poor. High taxes, low prices for tobacco, and resentment against special privileges given those close to the governor, Sir William Berkeley, provided the background for the uprising. With the immense frustration and anger among the colonists, they began to scapegoat the local Indians. Despite efforts to put the past behind, signs remain at nearly every juncture that there still exists a strong sense of racial dissension. His interpretation of the lack of adolescent racism is that reality has not fully set in for those who have not yet experienced the real world. You have to be out looking for jobs and housing to know how much discrimination is out there (Farley, 1997; 88+). Feagin contends that those who have a better grasp of racial reality are those who are over the age of nineteen. Reasoning behind this is that comparatively few African American teenage respondents said they had been victimized by discrimination; contrarily, half of the African American adults admitted they had (Farley, 1997). Experts are concerned that adolescents are being too gullible when it comes to realizing the truth of the matter. Others contend that perhaps they are willfully setting a precedence for others to follow that will ultimately initiate a genuine improvement in race relations. It is not as though contemporary teenagers do not have knowledge of history and its negative treatment of minority races; rather, it appears they have more faith in their own future than their parents did before them. The Outsiders, based in the 1960s Oklahoma, is about two gangs, the Greasers and the Socials. The Greasers were lower class, lower income people who were relatively rough around the edges while the Socials were the West side rich kids who went around getting drunk and jumping Greasers. • 27. Comparing Beowulf, The Wanderer, And The 13th Warrior Ty DeJames Mr. Neely 4 17 15 One common question in literature that always reappears is What is an epic hero? Or better yet an epic hero in Anglo Saxon culture. I believe there is more to being a hero than just being strong or intelligent. An epic hero in my eyes is oneself who comes to portray the beliefs of the society in which the tale/story is depicted. A few great examples of the Anglo Saxon epic hero are the literary characters in Beowulf, The Wanderer, and The 13th Warrior. These are all outstanding examples of Anglo Saxon epic heroes because they all came to show the evident characteristics bravery, loyalty, friendship. In the Anglo Saxon culture and literature, the meaning of to be a hero was to be a warrior and or a strong being. A hero also had to possess the vast characteristics of being strong, intelligent, and courageous. All warriors of Anglo Saxon culture and literature, had to be willing to face any odds and be willing to be the underdog that chases success. Also they had to fight to the death for their glory and accept their each individual fates. The typical Anglo Saxon hero was always able to be all of these and still be humble and very down to earth. Out of all literature Beowulf is, arguably, the best example one can use of an Anglo Saxon hero. But, in The 13th Warrior, Ibn Fadlan (played by Antonio Banderas) similar to Beowulf, also shows many of the characteristics that come to show the qualities one needs to possess to become an Anglo Saxon ... In order for Obasan to protect Naomi and Stephen she turned to the sacrifice of her voice; which was silence, the language of her grief is silence, she learned it well, its idioms, its nuances. ( ) Constant was the need for silence in Obasan s life, both for her own protection and the childrens. With the impeccable responsibility of caring for Naomi and Stephen there also came a great burden with the understanding that there would never be a real mother and father in their lives again. What is past recall is past pain (45) This shows the direct example Obasan imprinted on Naomi, in all this time I ve never seen her cry Naomi says. Obasan loved Naomi and Stephen dearly, she did whatever she thought was right to keep them safe. Though her sacrifice of voice was initially to protect, the lack of knowledge being conveyed to the child brought upon many unanswered questions, Please tell me about Mother , I would say to Obasan. I was consumed by the question. Devoured alive. But Obasan gave me no answers. I did not have, I never had, the key to the vault of her thoughts (31). Kangxi s reign was longer than that of any other ruler in Chinese history. One of his most notable achievements was uniting China after the turmoil upon the collapse of the Ming. A main reason for the Chinese granting him the mandate of heaven or granted the right to rule China from permission of the heavens was his knowledge and respect for Chinese heritage and culture. Emperor Kangxi recorded a Valedictory Edict in December twenty third, 1717 as an attempt to display sincere thoughts of what he believed it takes to be a virtuous ruler. In the Valedictory Edict Kangxi views death positively and as a relief from the everyday grind of virtuously ruling an empire. One of his most virtuous traits is he does not fear death and is comforted by the idea of relief from the responsibility of his reign through death once his sovereignty as a virtuous ruler is completed. One of Kangxi s great tasks left to be finished is who is to succeed him. He views this as a great issue, and as a good emperor cannot neglect it. Kangxi understands the weight of his decision and I believe he truly wants what is best for China. The issue of an heir seems to be on the forefront of his mind and this dilemma weighs heavily on his conscience. Kangxi states he wrote a letter indicating his intention for an heir, but does not go into detail in his Valedictory Edict. There is a record that Kangxi s son Yinreng was disinherited in 1708. There are stories that emperor Kangxi heard from his officials, that when touring the country, Yinreng would recruit young men and women as personal sex slaves as part of a major molestation scandal. This deeply saddened Kangxi and, while on his death bed, reportedly appointed Yinzhen; Emperor Kangxi s fourth son. This concept can be viewed as personal and individual to one s self, and is distinguished as an umbrella term to attributes such as; consciousness, heritage, name, appearance, and the soul. As Sterne s novel Tristram Shandy draws influence from John Locke s An Essay of Human Understanding, in which Locke discusses the origin of personal identity, the individual identity is evidently reflected within the text. The novel demonstrates Sterne s interpretation of the personal identity through the construction of each of his unique characterisations. Sterne can be seen to draw influence from the 18th Century philosopher, John Locke. Locke discusses the theory that individual identity is formed through consciousness and experience, and not upon the soul and body; this may show us wherein personal identity consists: not in the identity of substance, but, as I have said, in the identity of consciousness. (Locke). As Tristram believes the other misfortunate experiences within his childhood amount to his individual identity, this also suggests an origin of identity developed from his personal experiences. He believes that experiencing the many misfortunes such as his accidental naming and castration, disturbance as a homunculus and broken nose reshape his identity and that he is in a sense doomed to live a misfortunate life. In response to reading Tristram Shandy alongside the work of Locke, Heather Keenleyside states that such readings often understand Tristram Shandy as a novelization of Locke s much discussed distinction [...] On this view, Tristram Shandy follows Locke in arguing for the priority of personal identity over the body and its associates: the family and the species, birth and death. (Keenleyside, pg117) The protagonist states that the soul and body are joint sharers in everything they get (Sterne, pg435), composing them as separate but equal quantities of his ... The reason that this story is powerful, however, is because Rose changes. When Ted tells her that he wants to have a divorce, she sulks for a few days, but then realizes her problem. Calling him over, she gives him the divorce papers, his name still there, but lacking hers. His shock was appropriate, since the viewers too felt the same surprise. The story takes a powerful turn, as Rose felt nothing, no fear, no anger (219). She no longer feared disappointing him and being different from him. She developed from the little girl who would listen to others, into an adult who made her own decisions. She finally learned, like her mother, how to swim against the tide. The development of Rose s character aids the story into being powerful, but there was also another aspect that makes this true. Moreover, Rose s story is powerful because it holds misfortune that makes the reader upset. Powerful stories do more than just develop characters; they make the reader understand the character. They make the reader agonize over the pounds of misfortune piling onto a character s back, forcing them to carry excess burdens. The two main hardships that burden Rose are the death of her younger brother and her divorce. • 34. Essay On Japanese American Internment Unjustified Internment Internment, putting a person in prison or other kind of detention, generally in wartime. The Japanese American internment during World War II stemmed from the bombing of the Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. After the bombing on the West Coast, America had lost their trust of the Japanese and Japanese Americans. However, many Japanese lived on the West Coast because they had primarily come for the Gold Rush. Thus, all Japanese Americans were sent to internment camps out of fear of espionage and such. Was the internment of the Japanese Americans during World War II reasonable? The Japanese American internment was unjustified because it was unnecessary, unreasonable, and it was racist. The Japanese American internment did not have a logical reason for its doing. There is no Japanese problem on the coast, (Munson, 3). Munson states there is no problem on the West Coast with the Japanese. As a rebuttal , Lt. Gen. DeWitt states in a government report that it is better to have had this protection and not to have needed it than to have needed it and not to have had it, (DeWitt, 1).
