LinkedIn company pages: the untapped opportunity for SMBsScoop.it
Small and mid-size businesses (SMBs) massively use social media as a digital marketing tactic. But at Scoop.it we wanted to understand: how do they use social media? What are their key opportunities?
We surveyed more than 3,000 SMBs over several months - inside and outside the Scoop.it user base. We asked questions, collected behavioral data and discovered intriguingfindings which we plan to release in several parts.
The first lesson we learned is that LinkedIn Company Pages seem to be a major opportunity not yet leveraged by many SMBs. Though LinkedIn is THE business social network, SMBs still don't see their future on LinkedIn yet. They don't seem to have the time, the content or the analytics tools they need to take advantage of LinkedIn Company Pages as an important marketing opportunity.
Here are details on why and how to help them fix that.

Creation apps are the hottest thing in the classroom right now. Most teachers have PicCollage on their phone for saving memories with pictures from the camera roll. But, how many teachers are using PicCollage for learning? Or, better yet, turning the app usage over to students? I created this presentation for my session at the Margaret Blount Harvey Literacy Institute in Greenville, North Carolina. Teachers will learn why Pic Collage is the perfect app for digital creations, see several examples of PicCollage for reading comprehension and create a PicCollage f their own.
Influencer marketing continues to evolve with some brands looking to double their investment in 2017. In this session our team shares their experience, expertise and what to expect in the coming year.

1) Identifying why ROI from social media is difficult to measure.
2) Thinking about how to define new success metrics that make sense for your business.
3) Real-world campaigns and how you could measure their success.

As more and more people are coming to realize, there is far more to living a truly successful life than just earning a bigger salary and capturing a corner office. Our relentless pursuit of the two traditional metrics of success - money and power - has led to an epidemic of burnout and stress-related illnesses, and an erosion in the quality of our relationships, family life, and, ironically, our careers. In being connected to the world 24/7, we're losing our connection to what truly matters.
Drawing on the latest groundbreaking research and scientific findings in the fields of psychology, sports, sleep, and physiology that show the profound and transformative effects of meditation, mindfulness, unplugging, and giving, I show us the way to a revolution in our culture, our thinking, our workplace, and our lives.

3. Develop a program for effectively managing diversity.
4. Design a program for preparing employees for cross-cultural assignments.

Training Partnerships Pay Off in Skills and Jobs
Companies, job seekers, and federal and local governments are hoping that training programs can help develop the workforce with the skills necessary for today’s jobs. Central Iowa Works (CIW) is a partnership between employers and workers, public and private funding, and relevant community partners. The purpose of CIW is to close the skills gap from both the employer’s and the job seeker’s perspective. For employers, CIW helps them to recruit and hire qualified workers for jobs in central Iowa. Job seekers get trained and hired for real jobs with opportunities for career advancement. CIW works in partnerships with energy and financial services companies to provide apprenticeship programs. After participating in classroom training and paid work experiences that are part of the apprenticeship programs (sometimes called “earn as you learn”), employees have the skills they need for page 457entry-level jobs. Companies benefit by finding better trained employees who are likely to be motivated and reducing turnover.
Techtonic Group, an IT firm in Boulder, Colorado, struggled to fill software development positions because of the lack of individuals with the available skills. Techtonic relied on offshoring app development work to Armenia but found that time zone and language differences and rising salaries made continuing these arrangements difficult and costly. Techtonic saw this as an opportunity to try and build a pipeline of local diverse talent. Techtonic Group created Techtonic Academy to give women, veterans, high school and college dropouts, and at-risk youth who have been historically excluded from technology careers the opportunity to develop skills needed for software development jobs. The company works with Denver and Boulder county workforce agencies to identify applicants. There are over 400 applicants for 15 openings in the program, which runs several times each year. Applicants have to successfully demonstrate that they have the ability to understand fundamental basic software concepts. For applicants who have no software experience, the company offers three online courses prior to their technical screening to help them be ...

A BIG CATCH: USING A NEW HOOK TO TRANSFORM PERSONAL LEGACY (the story of an entrepreneur’s
successful launch)
How did it begin?
Carlos Vasquez moved from Puerto Rico and spent 20 years in Silicon Valley while companies such as
IBM, Hewlett Packard, and Microsoft were growing. He enjoyed building computers, and refreshed his
skills every six months to keep up with the learning curve. It was an environment in which the mantra
might have been, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” Having that entrepreneurial spirit, he consistently
recorded big ideas into his computer and carried around more thoughts in his head that never entirely
made it to the screen.
In a recent conversation with his niece, Emily, about notes from Grandma and how precious they were
to Emily, he recognized a potential gap. How will the current generation of children house notes from
their grandmas? If grandparents connect on social media (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, etc.) in order to
flex to the communication methods used in the 21st century, is that data able to be captured? Or is it
only seen when an anniversary of the original post comes up on the phone’s screen? Will a
grandmother, who is less familiar with technology, bother to learn how to go through multiple steps to
save a memento, or will she throw up her hands in frustration? If we want to intentionally save a
message or text from a close friend, do we have a user-friendly way to do this?
Recognizing that important items like these might be lost, Vasquez thought to himself, “Could this be
offered in an app?” When someone needs to remember a fact or see a kind word they believed was
special, where do they keep that information? A potential new app could be a cross between a
scrapbook and a diary of sorts.
As a smile crossed Vasquez’s face, his background in graphic design was sparked. He grabbed the napkin
from across the table and scribbled a quick sketch of a fisherman’s handheld net alongside the word
“MemoryNet.” [See Attachment A for the sketch.]
His mind began to reel with the possibilities, and niece Emily chimed in.
The Main Idea for the Application
What could the app do?
●Act as a secure platform to share and save comments, tweets, kind words, and news to the

●Scrapbook things you send to it from other apps such as Facebook and LinkedIn, allowing
categorization by topic or by person
●Allow the user to generate a collage of ideas and phrases by topic or person and send privately
to another user
●To connected apps, show a fish icon if the MemoryNet app believes the words indicate you
may want to “catch” that comment or memento (based on your previous usage and/or settings)
●Provide a recording feature for a 15-second “label” to anything you net (a ...

The Art of the Start—How to Kick Start your New Job #First90Guy Kawasaki
You can read the whole article on LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/my-first-90-days-suck-up-right-people-guy-kawasaki
There are two components to getting off to a great start on a new job: what to avoid and what to accomplish. This post explains both components. First, there are four ways to blow it. They form the acronym LAST:
Lazy people show up for work on time or late. Hardworking people show up early. Lazy people leave on time or early. Hardworking people leave late.
Arrogant people believe that they know what to do, how the company should operate, and what’s wrong with management. These kinds of people are called “90-day wonders” because they think they know everything after 90 days.
Stupid people do stupid things like cutting corners, cheating, and making uniformed decisions. (The combination of arrogance and stupidity is supremely ironic and common.)
Tacky people do dishonest, racist, sexist, sexual, or ageist things. They appear at functions in an inebriated state, and they spread rumors. They do creepy or inappropriate things because they are untrained, stupid, or insecure.

People love the notion of the sole innovator, but this notion is wrong. Successful companies are usually started, and become successful, with the contributions of at least two people. Yin and yang, maker and seller, dreamer and pragmatist — call it what you will. After the fact, people may recognize one founder as the innovator, but it takes a team to make a new venture work.
Derek Sivers, the co-founder of CD Baby, said it best: “The first follower is what transforms the lone nut into a leader.”
In some instances the first follower is the first customer, but most often the first follower is the second employee of a company — that is, the co-founder.
There are few factors that can make a company more successful, fun, and epic than an awesome co-founder. There are few factors that can make a company more unsuccessful, aggravating, and pathetic than an incompetent, lazy, or dishonest co-founder.
This SlideShare explains the art of the picking a co-founder and is part of the LinkedIn Influencer series for #mystartupstory.

In the old days, the only way for writers to publish a book was through a publisher. This meant finding an agent, pitching editors, and hoping that one of them likes it. Then writers would lose control of their books because the editor and publisher would oversee content, interior design, cover design, sales, and marketing.
And this describes what the lucky few writers experienced. Most writers were simply rejected or ignored, and they never published a book.
I'm going to show you how you can write a book and publish it. Are you ready to get started?

In the real world, you don’t have infinite resources; you don’t have a perfect product; and you don’t sell to a growing market without competition. You’re also not omnipotent, so you cannot enforce what people think your brand represents. Under these assumptions, most companies need all the help they can get with branding. Guy Kawasaki presents eight salient tips in The Art of Branding that will give your brand the attention it deserves.

10 Disruptive Quotes for EntrepreneursGuy Kawasaki
People think that innovation happens by sitting around with your buddies and letting magical ideas pop into your head. Or, your customers tell you exactly what they need, and you just have to build it.
Dream on. Innovation is a hard, messy process with no shortcuts. It starts with making something that you’d like to use and that might make people’s lives better. Then you have to get the word out that your product or service exists.
Follow #VirginDisruptors to join the conversation with Richard Branson and Guy Kawasaki as they talk about whether entrepreneurs have lost the will to innovate.

16. Hi Guy
Are you covering news related to the President’s TechHire announcement this morning about opportunities to get a larger and more diverse
group of Americans the skills they need to access in-demand technology jobs?
We'd love to connect you with Carolyn Berkowitz, President, Capital One Foundation, or some of Capital One Future Edge partners from General
Assembly, Grovo, or Burning Glass Technologies to talk about exactly what skills are in demand among the nation’s middle-skill jobs and about
how they’re looking to help more Americans develop these skills through the Future Edge initiative and how Capital One is supporting the
TechHire initiative.
•
We could also connect you with individuals from NYC, San Francisco and Washington DC, who are looking to transform their tech skills to pursue
greater economic opportunities. These individuals are all participating in a program through Capital One and General Assembly that aims to
facilitate a more diverse community of talent in the tech industry by providing fellowships to low-to-moderate income individuals seeking
advanced digital skills. They have unique stories to share, including a Latina single mother returning to the workforce after spending 8 years out of
the workforce raising her two daughters and a young man in Washington DC currently working in a restaurant chain making $11,000 -- while at
different points in their lives, both individuals are working to beef up their tech skills to expand their economic opportunities and pursue their
passion.
apital One and Burning Glass Technologies also just released a report providing an in-depth look at the digital skills required in today’s middle-skill
jobs, which are jobs that don’t typically require a Bachelor’s degree and that pay above the national living wage. Middle-skill jobs currently
comprise 39 percent of total employment in the U.S.
Among the study’s key findings:
Nearly 8 in 10 middle-skill jobs in today’s workforce require digital skills – representing 32 percent of all labor market demand in the nation.
Digitally intensive middle-skill jobs have grown more than twice as fast as other middle-skill jobs in the past decade.
Digitally intensive middle-skill occupations pay wages, on average, 18 percent higher than middle-skill jobs without a digital component.
Carol Berkowitz or any of our Future Edge partners would be happy to connect with you to discuss why this issue is so important and to provide
more context on the skills in need and resources to help more Americans develop those skills.
About TechHire:
About Tech Hire: America has about 5 million open jobs today, more than at any point since 2001. Over half a million of those job openings are in
fields like software development, network administration, and cybersecurity, many of which did not even exist just a decade ago. Helping more
Americans train and connect to these jobs is a key element of the President’s middle-class economics agenda. As part of that agenda, TechHire is
a bold public-private initiative to empower Americans with the skills they need, through universities and community colleges but also
nontraditional approaches like “coding boot camps,” and high-quality online courses that can rapidly train workers for a well-paying job often in
just a few months. Many of these programs do not require a four-year degree. To kick off TechHire, 20 regions with open technology jobs, and
more than 300 employers, are announcing plans to work together to create more tech training opportunities. The President is challenging more
to follow in their lead.
TechHire Goals: TechHire’s focus is to expand opportunities for more Americans to train and be hired into jobs requiring 21st Century digital
skills. There are three pillars of focus for the TechHire initiative:
Expand slots, upgrade quality, and/or diversify participants in accelerated training pipeline for IT jobs that local employers demand and will hire.
Support a locally selected or created intermediary/clearinghouse in screening and matching job seekers to appropriate job opportunities and to
provide financing for low-income participants in accelerated training
Expand hiring and internships for IT jobs (e.g., coding, web development, cybersecurity) from non-traditional training sources based on
demonstrated competencies rather than pedigree and standard HR ‘markers’
How Capital One Will Support TechHire:
As part of Capital One’s Future Edge initiative, through which we will focus $150 million over 5 years to help more Americans succeed in a digital
economy, Capital One will support TechHire.
One way Capital One will support TechHire is to help develop best practices to connect job seekers with job opportunities, in collaboration with
Opportunity@Work and other partners.
We’re also working at the local level to support TechHire. In Delaware, Capital One has served as a leader in the TechHire Delaware initiative, a
coalition being convened by Governor’s Jack Markell. Capital One is investing in TechHire DE to provide job skills training for technology roles and
is committed to hiring program graduates.
If asked … Capital One has also committed to a hiring approach based on demonstrated competencies in coding or programming in partnership
with HackerRankX and other similar organizations.
Please let us know if you’re interested in us coordinating an interview.
