It's safe to say that many would object to being called an "idiot." Though the term, along with
colloquial counterparts "moron" and "imbecile," is rooted in a medical diagnosis based on IQ
scores, the word has evolved with a negative connotation and has come to informally mean "a stupid
person." Why, then, has psychologist David Dunning written a lengthy article entitled "We Are All
Confident Idiots"? In "Confident Idiots," Dunning addresses the phenomenon of overconfidence in
uninformed (or rather misinformed, as Dunning puts it) people. Though the article's premise may
leave some readers uncomfortable, it approaches a very real issue in a nonthreatening way.

I've had the worst luck when it comes to English class. This was a recurring event, particularly in
high school. Every year I would dread walking to my English because I already know that it would

In Christian folklore, the holy fool is an archetypal figure that stands apart from society, elevated to

are ideally suited to critique mainstream ideas and practices, acting as a narrative device to provide

nameless monks who give up all of their worldly possessions to become closer to Jesus, to

A few fun facts to consider before you continue to decide that our President is "an idiot" or "a
buffoon" or that he will "fail as he has done with everything else."
Let's simply start with the fact that he just pulled off the biggest upset in American political history–

The Idiot Book Analysis
Kurosawa's three hour adaptation of The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, a complicated four–part
novel, had to cut out, simplify, and change the original work in order to adapt it to film. However,
looking at the specific changes Kurosawa made, specifically towards the end of his film, it is clear
that the changes he made weren't merely for the sake of time. Although Kurosawa's modifications
might seem random, changes like the bedroom being hot in the book as compared to cold in the
movie, eliminating the wedding scene entirely, and most tellingly having Ayako call herself an idiot
with the last words of the movie dramatically narrow the argument in the story of The Idiot. While
one of the central themes of the original novel was the main character's, Myshkin, Russian Orthodox
Christianity, Kurosawa cut it out entirely and instead moved the focus of his movie onto the
definition of idiocy.
Taken at first glance, the ending to the novel seems more suspenseful, but when examined closer the
movie is just as thrilling as the novel. As Myshkin and Rogozhin lie in bedroom beside Nastasya's
corpse, the room is sweltering. This clearly uncomfortable situation parallels the unsettling feeling
that Dostoevsky desires readers to have with Myshkin comforting Rogozhin. Although this course
of action is the natural conclusion to Myshkin's professed Christianity, readers are more likely to
extend Nastasya pity and compassion, and refrain from giving it to her murderer. As Kurosawa

Never in a million years did Hanson believe he would end up standing in front of this brick wall.
Prisoner. That was the last thing he wanted to be. He was one and there was no denying that what he

front garden. They had pressed charges and he had pleaded guilty because it was the right thing to

While something like this wouldn't have given out prisoner time the way a murder might have, he
had personally asked the judge to send him to prison. This had left the McGee family puzzled as to

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed reading the book, it just wasn't funny to me. Karl's writing style
however, was very interesting. I really enjoy reading informative writing and Karl certainly delivers
in this category. Each chapter gives an in–depth look into everything Karl does. Being a diary the
writing style doesn't describe every little detail, but gives enough information and descriptive words
to really draw you in.
The book also features pictures taken from every trip. There are four points in the book were
pictures are placed and each point consists of around 8 pages each. I really liked this as they are not
only interesting to look at but fun to compare the image you've built up in your head with the real
thing. One other thing about the structure of the book that I didn't like was the way the 'Karl's Facts'
parts of the book were put in. Although informing they can sometimes break up the sentences and
leave you having to go back to the last page to remember what was happening. The introduction to
each chapter however, was very nice to see. It compared quotes from other books and guides on
each 'wonder' with Karl's view on it. This was humorous and offered a fresh perspective on the
subject.
My overall response to the book is that although funny in places, I feel that it really excels in the
informative area. It was very interesting and, as I've said many times in this review, fresh. It wasn't

The United States of America is the world most powerful country in the world, dominating the
world's economic and political system. Millions of foreign students come to America for higher
education each year. Ironically enough, America public school system is not so glorious. Indeed, it
is not effective where teachers and students lacked motivation and interaction to develop critical

"Against School" argued that the education system in the United States is deeply flawed. Moore

When reading over our discussion topic for this week, I immediately thought of a British TV docu
series called An Idiot Abroad. Basically, the show follows Karl Pilkington, the writer for The Ricky
Gervais Show, who is sent to various parts of the world to experience different cultures. Ricky
Gervais and his friend Stephen send him on this journey as a joke, knowing that Karl is
uncomfortable with the idea that other cultures do things differently than what he is used to, which
is strictly British culture. While watching this show, the viewer can immediately learn the true

Let's begin from the end. It ends with a group of teenagers thrown into prison for assassination,
attempted murder, and treason. And, to be fair, that wasn't an unfair sentencing. We did, technically,
try to kill the president. And we did try to overthrow the government. But who could blame us? This
entire country had fallen apart, and no one else seemed to be doing anything about it. So, it was us, a
group of four kids who decided to take a shot. Literally. We had all been friends for a while, meeting

Even tho Coyote in one tale contrasts Coyote's character from the other they both did well people.
Coyote from "Coyote and the Buffalo", got out of dieing by offering Buffalo Bull new horns.
Buffalo accepted, so it was a win–win situaton for Coyote. In the other tale, Coyote helped find
Coyote's wife by decieving the water maidens, and getting information before killing them. This
helped regain Fox's wife's love. The coyote in these tales had diiferent mentalities from one another,
one being an idiot and one being smart. Another similarity that theses tales have is that they both
explain why the world is how it is. For example, in "Coyote and the Buffalo", when Coyote gives
Buffalo Bull new horns, they become the horns that all buffalos would have from that point on.
Also, when Coyote kills the cow that was given to him by Buffalo as food he decides to go back to
Buffalo to ask for another one but the cow that Coyote killed returned from the dead and refused to
go with coyote again and Buffalo denies him another one. This explains why there are no buffalo in
the Kettle Falls on the Columbia Rive, all because of Coyote. In "Fox and Coyote and Whale", Fox
and Coyote go after Fox's wife who was taken by Whale. After Fox and Coyote rescue her, Fox's

Slamming the door behind him, Johnny fought to catch his breath.
