Star by using the first few slides to create mind
maps and or brainstorms for ideas related to
your project. Get as many possibilities as you

Mind Maps/Brainstorms
- A lot of the designs will consist of the apple which is from the name of the bookshop itself. This can be related to a lot
of storybook characters and can be manipulated with others to put a somewhat ‘in joke’ with the shop and what they
are promoting.
- For instance, having portraits of famous authors, classical novelists to stick to the clients brief, such as Jane Austen and
Agatha Christie with the gold apple in their portrait in some way (preferably in their hand, will need to find the
appropriate portraits to manipulate them). As well as images of scientists such as Einstein and Froude to promote that
they are selling science books as well as fiction.
- To tie in their want of both child and adult fiction sales I will need to create images with both very well known
characters with the apple in their hand, or image somewhere else.
- Such as having Snow white holding the apple in shock with her hand up the viewer to create depth.
- A moomin in a forest finding one of the apples.
- Sherlock Holmes holding or finding one of the apples on a case with a quote. Possibly changing one of the words to
apple or the title of the shop.
- Harry Potter chasing one instead of a snitch (will have copyright issues, better to only use in practice)
- Alice in Wonderland finding an apple saying, ‘Eat me’ rather than a cake. Also having the scene of her and the Cheshire
cat by his tree with the apples growing out of that particular tree.
- Oscar Wilde holding one with one of his quotes about reading next to him.
- Quotes are a key feature with the images, particularly with the ones with scientists and authors in them to show
further their true opinions, through quotes, about reading and knowledge.
- How the logo or location will come up on the poster is still unknown. The apples being held by the characters are too
small the have the name on them. Especially if they’re needed to be noticeable.
- With the logo, to potential business card, the apple needs to be the main focal point to tie the shops name to the
imagery. It’s obvious but it works to get the message across. There could be alterations in many forms, such as having
the apple on the brand giving an interesting sign for the shop and business card because the information can be
fashioned around the back of the card because the branch allows there to be length for the phone number and email.
Whereas the back of the apple allows there to be the address.
- Other ideas for the logo include simple designs but allow there to be a different perspective rather than a flat and 2D.
Such as having a bite out of the apple with bruising and shading to come through like on a real apple. Or having the
apple being held in someone hand (singular only).

Assessing ideas
Now you have generated lots of potential ideas, it is
time to rationalise those against the requirements of
the brief from your client.
Use the next few slides to consolidate your ideas and
then assess them against the requirements and
constraints of the project.
Finally, select an idea to take forward for further
development.

What do you like about the idea?
What I like about the ideas I have for the posters, which will be linked to the merchandise, is the art style having that vintage
hint to it without it being too harsh, blunt and obvious. With a lot of vintage style they tend to be quite thick with the lining
and detailed to a point which I don’t really want to achieve with the designs of the posters and merchandise. At least not with
the ones that include the storybook characters but rather to have them be more soft and clean with their lining and edges.
However, it is something to keep in mind for development with the designs. The portraits of well known classical novelists
and scientists having the apples in their hand is an idea that I like because of how the two elements link to the subject of the
bookshop. The apple linking to the title of the bookshop and the people featured in those images linking to the kind of
people who are featured in the books they sell. This range of images allows there to be a link to a more adult audience which
is what the client wanted and specified in their brief with who they wanted in them. That meaning that by having scientists
and authors in them rather than just showing that they sell children’s books but also items that will appeal to an adult
audience). The apples are a key feature in the images, even though it is quite an obvious approach to the designs it makes
sense to have them there to translate to the viewers what the bookshop is called and what they books they are selling. For
instance, the image from Alice In Wonderland with the Cheshire cat in the tree which will have the gold apples to represent
the shop shows the association between the shop and reading in a straight forward way. Having the tie between the
characters and the shops name adds a somewhat humour to the images because it’s a way of almost promoting the shop
through these famous authors, scientists and characters which will make people remember the posters easier. All of the
posters made for the client will be minimised to fit on different pieces of merchandise for continuity purposes. However,
other ideas that I have for the merchandise include quoting authors and scientists with different patterns to make them more
appealing and eye-catching to an audience. There will be one side of the tote bag with the design that I’ve made as the main
feature for it but the other side will have a detailed logo for the shop. Having there be a larger version of the logo on one full
side of the bag rather that be small in the corner of the main design allows people to view it more easily. Therefore making
an almost walking promotion for people to know the main of the shop through the tote bag. The logos will be quite easily
explained because, like the posters and a lot of the merchandise, there will be an apple in it. This is a more self-explanatory
way of presenting the shop to people. There logo that is used now is a flat, 2D gold apple which have, ‘The Little Apple
Bookshop’ in a lighter shade of gold with a basic font for it. With the ideas I have for it they aren’t overly complicated but if
they were there wouldn’t be an synergy with logo for the shop to the shop itself. One of them is on someone holding the
apple, with one hand, to add a new element to the logo. The second idea I had was for there to be a scattered effect to the
words so that they are in different sizes. For instance having word, ‘Little’ be in a smaller font that the other words and,
‘Apple’ be more prominent. Finally, I had for the new logo was to have there be a long branch with the apple hanging off of it
with the name of the shop on the apple like it already is but adding a new element.

Does it match what the client wants?
The client was quite specific with what they wanted, however they were also fairly open to what I could
possibly create for them. What they were mainly looking for was promotional items, especially bookmarks,
tote bags and experimentations with the logo. The posters that I am wanting to create wasn’t a specific thing
the client was looking for but they work as promotional items to be spread online and in print. The posters
are also a guide for the merchandise to be made from. Unlike the tote bags which work on their own design
of quotes and the people who’ve said them. The client was very specific with the colour of the apple in the
images. They need to be green, not red or pink. For the majority of the images I’ve said to use a golden
apple which will be used experimentally to see how they feel about it but green works well with the designs
as well. Mainly because they will stand out against the original images which people will know well.
Are you capable of delivering this? Can you do this on time?
I think I will be able to deliver the majority of the work because I am working with original images, repairing
them if needed, rotoscoping and the clients opinions on where the work should go. The main issue behind
this is that I don’t think I’ll be able to complete all of the work I am wanting to do in the time given. I need to
prioritise what I make but making sure that I get a least two main designs done to work as both posters and
merchandise. And a new logo that can work as a new logo and business card. By making sure that I’m getting
the main criteria done for and receive feedback on them I will know in which direction I should go when
carrying on with my work. If I get a lot of feedback from the client about the few pieces I had already made
then I will need to develop off of them. If I get a small amount of feedback I can continue with the rest of the
ideas that I’m aiming to do.
Do you have the resources available to do this?
The resources that I need to do the work are all at college, the client didn’t have the resources for me to
work at their workspace, because I will be working on computers primarily due to Photoshop.

Idea Evaluation
Which of your ideas do you want to develop further? Explain why you think that is the right idea to take forward.
The ideas that I will want to further develop will be one graphic with a storybook character, another with a portrait, one of
the tote bags with a quote and make sure to finish at least one logo (which could also be used as a business card). Having
these four points allows me to reach each of the main goals that I was achieving. I had a few ideas for each of these
segments but getting one of each done allows there to be the verity needed for the client and having the points that they
wanting to be cleared. Keeping it clear with the designs and who is in them I will make sure that they’re distinguishable, so
most likely using Alice In Wonderland for the storybook character. Whereas with the author I will most likely work with
Oscar Wilde because the images I have seen look like the best to work with for the placement of the apple in his hand. For
the quote I could use an authors quote or a scientists. The designs would be more simple for them because they would be
put onto tote bags and postcards. Having them be too detailed wouldn’t catch people’s eye easily when they’re being used
in public. And with the logo I want it to be larger and more detailed than the original, such as having, ‘The Little Apple
Bookshop’ be in a darker font to be seen easier and having there be more to the apple for the logo. For instance, having it
be held in a hand or hanging off of a branch. These four elements are the ones I will be aiming to create first so that I can
receive feedback on all of them. If there is little feedback I can carry on with other ideas or if there if there is a lot of
feedback I can develop them further.

Development
Use the next slides to document your idea development.
This should include mood boards and other visual examples of work. It
could include basic mock ups of your vision for the project using the
work of others.
If you are taking doing something outside of your ordinary skill set or
way of working, you could include test work or practice work here too.
There is room to develop a second idea here as well. This could give
you a greater variety of options to give to your client.
You will then assess your developed idea against the constraints of the
project before producing a final treatment.

Examples of colours and shades that I will wanting to stick with for the work I produce for the client. I didn't want the colours to be too flashy
or over-the-top because the bookshop itself is small and uses colours and tones like this in a lot of their furniture and books that they display.
As well as the fact that a lot of the subjects and images used in the products I will make are either in black and white or have the same hues
and tones as the ones I’ve picked to show continuity and synergy with them.

Whereas with the other
sans serif fonts would
work better on a busy
scene, like the posters
which will show more

being so bold and
contrasting to the detail
of the graphics in the
image that people will be
able to read what is being
said in them. With the
merchandise, such as the
bookmarks, which will
have the posters design
but minimized, it may be
easier because they’ll be
less text and just the
graphics in the poster and
the logo for the shop.

Developed: Existing Products
A lot of other posters for bookshops shows promotion
in a similar way in terms of trying to find interesting
ways to display books to fit with the information they’re
trying to explain to their viewer. For instance,
Waterstones wanted to promote they were a book shop
that is extensive and that there are so many books to
find in their stores that it’s basically never ending.
Making it an interest that can go on forever to their
audience. They further showed this with having the
background be of multiple books that they sell.
Whereas with the, ‘Read More Books, and comics too!’
poster used an art style than photography to show a
nondescript element to the people in the poster and
the books as well. Which were used to display all their
information connecting the books to the reader and the
shop itself without being specific to what they actually
sell other than books and comics. With the content that
I want to create it will show what they sell through the
content of the books they sell. Through the stories
characters and authors. The authors will also be key
because the client is wanting there to be more
scientists presented which is quite niche to bookshop
promotion because they tend to primarily show authors
and children’s book illustrations. There would be an art
style to the products, no photography besides the
images taken of the classical authors and scientists, to
show a theme with the work in two ways.

Assessment of final ideas
Suitable for audience?
The audience they are wanting to aim for is mainly an adult audience but also children which I think
the is appealing to the two age demographics due to the variety of characters shown in the designs
I’ve created. For Oscar Wilde to the Moomin characters, as well as scientists which can apply
equally to both adults and children, on different platforms, such as posters and tote bags. Whereas
with the logo it is mainly an indication of the titles key word, ‘Apple’. However, due to the design and
detail with, for instance, the flowers it could be perceived as more ‘feminine’.
Suitability for client?
I think the ideas that I have in place for my client fulfil the brief that they have given me in the sense
that I have worked to the theme of the shop to match what they are wanting to evoke through the
sales and image. That being that they’re wanting to promote scientists and classical authors that
appeal to an adult audience rather than just classical children’s novels which is what I have
achieved with my idea generation through the merchandise, which is an element they wanted
covered, and posters.
Appeal of the work:
The appeal of the work comes from the audiences love for literature, authors, science and the
merchandise that they could purchase with these designs. Tote bags show a large appeal to
consumers nowadays because of the convenience of them. Having a nice design on them grows
more attention.

Timescales for production:
I think that the goals that I have given myself for completing at least four of the designs that I have
created in the two weeks of production will have completed the goals the client is wanting. If all
completed with feedback given from the client it will allow for me to either develop the products that
I have already made for them or make more products for them to revive.
Costs:
For my project it will primarily consist of me using my own resources. Such as my own pen and
paper to work out how the products should look and then using Photoshop from the college to
create the products for my client. There isn’t any photography or trips needed to be taken when
creating these products for my client.
Personnel:
Due to the production of this project is primarily on Photoshop through graphics there won’t be any need.
Particularly since I won’t be doing photography of a promotional video so models and actors won’t be
needed when making the products for the client.

Legal and ethical issues:
There won’t be any legal and ethical issues involved with anyone involved with the production and products of the project
given that I will be the only one working on them. However, there may be issues in terms of copyright because the products
I will be making involve quotes from authors books, their images, designs, portraits, etc. adapted to fit to the bookshops
style and name. The UK Copyright Law states that, “The law gives the creators of literary, dramatic, musical, artistic works,
sound recordings, broadcasts, films and typographical arrangement of published editions, rights to control the ways in
which their material may be used. The rights cover; broadcast and public performance, copying, adapting, issuing, renting
and lending copies to the public. In many cases, the creator will also have the right to be identified as the author and to
object to distortions of his work. International conventions give protection in most countries, subject to national laws.” They
also state that, “Interpretation is related to the independent creation rather than the idea behind the creation. For example,
your idea for a book would not itself be protected, but the actual content of a book you write would be. In other words,
someone else is still entitled to write their own book around the same idea, provided they do not directly copy or adapt
yours to do so.” That does not apply to the work I’d be creating. The first statement applies much more clearing to what I
will be doing. There is a very obvious distinction of the people and the characters displayed in the work that I will be
making, such as modern characters like Harry Potter and classic characters such as Alice In Wonderland. However, the
Duration Of Copyright in the UK is 70 years after the death of the publisher of the work does the work become public
domain. “The above information is based on the current rules under the Berne Convention. The actual duration may be
considerably higher under national laws. Under UK copyright law for example, the copyright duration is typically 70 years
from the end of the calendar year in which the last remaining author of the work dies.” The law also states that under
specific categories of work the law can be take less time than that. For, “Artistic Works, such as photographs and applies art:
At least 25 years from creation”. Which for a lot of the work that I will be adapting involves work, quotes, images adapted
that applies to the UK Copyright Law Duration. In terms of discrimination I think I’d be avoiding that. The modifications that
I will be applying to the work for my client will not show an inappropriate nature in regrades to social issues, language,
religion, etc. There is mainly an apple, to represent the store, in place of the image with the subject in the image somehow
and having their background change possibly to a forest, blank background, change in colouring to be darker or lighter, so
that the images aren’t unrecognisable but to be noticeable but in merriment of the store in someway.

Competition/Market research:
Who is in competition with your client?
Who is in competition with my client are larger corporations that are better known nation wide. The issue with this store is that
it is an independent store located away from the city centre. True, that it is off side York Mister which makes it a popular tourist
attraction but in terms of locals they have less knowledge on the store because they tend to stay around the city centre.
Waterstones and WHSmith are their main competition because are the most popular bookshops in England in terms of high
street retailers. People tend to congregate towards them due to the convenience of them providing the newest books at a wide
verity. Whereas with WHSmith they also sell stationary and works as a news sellers. Even though my client shows an equal verity
as well as signed editions of new and older novels with gifting ideas they aren’t as well known, particularly outside of York.
What is their design/photography/marketing/promotional/advertising work like?
Their design is quite old-fashioned in design by having it look as though the apple is sketched by pen, as well as book with a tree
emerging out of it. These are only done with black and white which adds to the aesthetic of the drawings but due to the lack of
colour it doesn’t catch your eye too well. Whereas with their other logo they show a simple Times New Roman font in green with
a simple graphic of a green apple with a shine on it. Having these two logos can be confusing to the consumer because there is a
lack of continuity in them for when people want to research them they will get two logos which could possibly lead to people
thinking that there are two stores instead of one so having one constant one will give them look to be known for. Whereas with
the rest of their promotion they only have a Facebook and Twitter page. Even though they don’t have a large store having no
website informs people less that they are an official store. And when it comes to their social media platforms they don’t post
very frequently and the quality of the photos are quite low which doesn’t catch people’s eye. They work with many literary
events, such as York Literacy Festival where they sold books of the author who spoke at Grand Opera House York and got them
to sign books for them to sell at their store, which is one of their key selling points to their store is that they have many signed
editions of books. When working with these events they advertise their store with their tote bags, bookmarks which is free
promotion for them whenever someone buys a book of the speaker or entertainment there.
What wider market is your client part of? Undertake research in to that market. This could be in the form of sales figures,
audience figures, turnover, job roles, customer base, market share, rules, regulations and codes of practice.
The book selling market has shown a drop in years due to rise in technology, such as eBooks and Kindles, however 2016 sales in
books showed an 8% rise in books in the U.S., 4% in hardbacks and a 16% rise in children’s novels. This has resulted in a 17%
drop in sales of digital books in the UK, 19% in the U.S. As for the age demographic, a study by the ‘Media Customer Report
2015’, in the UK, found that the younger generation, aged 16-24 prefer to read physical copies of books. 63% of that age
demographic said that they’d never bought an eBook. Compared to 38% of the 2000 who took the survey said they’d bought an
eBook in the last 24 months were aged 25-34 years old.

Audience/Customer research:
Who is the audience or customer that your client is trying to reach? Perhaps they have already told you. Perhaps you should ask.
You could also do further research in to the type of audience or customer you are hoping to appeal to.
My client is aiming to gain a more adult audience. This is mainly because a lot of their promotional items are colourful and based
off of a lot of children’s novels, such as Harry Potter, and gifting items it can throw people off into thinking that a lot of the books
and what they’re selling is aimed at children. However, a lot of the actual books that they are selling are aimed at adults.
Whether that be through fiction, autobiographies, science books, art books, etc. which are appealing to a higher age
demographic. With the items that I make for them they are wanting to evoke a more mature aesthetic and outlook to their store
and products which is why they were more adamant on keeping away from using too many children’s books characters on any of
the promotional pieces. The ideal customer nowadays is a younger audience aged from teenagers to young adults (16 to 24
years old) which is what a survey showed in 2015 about the sales of books from the Media Consumer Report UK. But promoting
their science and classic novels I think will bring in an older audience who are looking for a niche bookshop that won’t be too
busy due to it not being as well known with a wide verity of books that are signed or special editions.
A key selling point to their store is that they
sell many signed editions of books from cook
books, autobiographies, children’s fiction,
young adult, etc. Which pulls in a large
demographic ranging from all ages because
they are showing people's favorite authors.

Content research:
This should take the form of secondary research (exiting products from your client and the competition and wider market) and
also some primary research (asking potential audience, your client and your market,) to help you formalise the content of your
project.
Tote bags have been the main instigator for merchandise revolving around books and bookshops due to them being
less likely to break than a plastic bag holding books but also because of the designs people put on them. A popular
series of them has been the, ‘Penguin Books’ collection of tote bags which are meant to look like the front covers of
Penguin Book classics which attract classical readers and their specific favorite of those books. Whereas store, such as,
‘Waterstones’, personalize some for their stores. Once again going for a classic and old fashioned look which is more
fitting the the theming of books and the timeless aesthetic a lot of them, and their bookshops, go with. With other
however, they tend to try and adapt them in some way. Taking a character or line, or both, and making new
illustrations to show a different perspective of the character. Possibly to make them more charming and appealing to
the audience in a new light bringing them in with this new look on their favorite characters and quotes. The kind of
content that I would be making for my client are adapted versions of characters to fit the my clients environment.
These tie-ins of classic characters, authors and scientists will appeal to an audience and having the apples to represent
the shop.

Content research:
This should take the form of secondary research (exiting products from your client and the competition and wider market) and
also some primary research (asking potential audience, your client and your market,) to help you formalise the content of your
project.
For a lot of bookshop selling postcards
is a popular choice of merchandise to
show a variation of book covers, either
limited editions of book covers or an
artists representation of them or the
quotes from them with elaborate and
interesting graphics to go along side
them, similar to a lot of bookmark
designs. The designs that I will be
doing for these pieces but with the
main posters and larger graphics made
to be simplified to fit on a bookmark
and shrunk down to fit on postcard
sizes and tote bags.

Content research:
Mood board of the kind of content that I will be putting into the kind of products made of my client in terms of their
promotional items. Such as merchandise, i.e. tote bags, postcards, bookmarks, etc., and posters.

Treatment:
The treatment evokes how an audience will experience what you are making.
Write in the active-voice in present tense. Tell the reader what they will see.
Describe the content of your project.
Write vibrantly, so the reader gets excited about your work. They should be able to visualise the
finished pieces. You could also supplement this with some mood boards or mock ups.
Be specific—don’t use words like may, might or possibly.

What I intend to do for my client is to create and produce an expressive interpretation of scientists, classic novelists and their
characters in a range of different scenarios expressed visually and vibrantly through posters and merchandise to be presented to
my clients target audience. These different scenarios can consist of being out of their natural environments, showing a different
inspiration of their natural environments or still involved with them but the key change, and message if the image, is through
adding the green apple that symbolises the bookshops name. Connecting the apple from the shop the literary and science icons
adds a sense of humour to the images by having the subject in the products produced involved with the shop in someway, which
will intrigue their target audience. One of these is with the famous author Oscar Wilde. There are many portraits of the writer
but the one that I have found shows him with his right arm elevated which presents his right hand in frame. Manipulating and
adjusting his hand through production will allow me to place the apple connecting him to the store. This along with a quote of
his and the name of the shop, along with the new logo made for them, will present the theme of the store to a more adult
audience who are more likely to know of a read Oscar Wilde in comparison to children. The portrait will remain in the
monochrome state that is already in, however the apple will be the only part of the image that shows colour and will be the
centre piece of the image promoting the store, then what content it sells. Having this contrast in colours will draw the consumers
eye in from the dark and light hues of the original image of the author to the vibrancy of the apple in his hand. Due to the store
being for all ages my second piece will show the classic and memorable scene from Lewis Cornell’s, ’Alice In Wonderland’ where
the protagonist meets the Cheshire cat in the tree. From this I will adapt the image by having the apples of the store be hanging
off of the tree linking the two together like I had previously done with the Oscar Wilde work. This appeals to a younger audience
now, letting them know that the shop caters for them as well as adults. The third piece I will be of a quote. So far in the
production I have shown people and characters in different forms but having the store be about reading needs to be
represented in one of the pieces I make for them. With this in mind I will be making a tote bag, which can be adapted into other
items, with a Jane Austen quote, ‘Pictures Of Perfection Make Me Sick And Wicked’. This quote is one of her shorter and more
powerful quotes which will work nicely for a lot of consumers due to it not being as well known, or obvious, from well known
authors and characters. The quote will be in an old fashioned frame to match the era of the author with wild flowers and vines
growing up and around the frame and words to make the image look more worn, distressed and lived-in. Rather than having it
be clean-cut and simplistic the design is more complicated to match what the quote is saying. Even though Jane Austen is known
for her romance novels this quote is more troubled so having the overgrowing of the wild flowers and darker hues and colouring
to make it look worn will evoke the distraught motion of the quote showing a different quote to what we’re used to from said
author. For the final piece that I am aiming to make for my client is a new logo which is one of the elements in which they
specified they wanted in the brief. The logo had an opening for many possibilities due to the main image being of an apple. The
leading design to make was of an apple hanging off of a branch with details such as bruising, shine, flowers, and bark to be
featured on there. This design, due to it’s format and length could work in a number of ways for the store. For instance, the
branch can act as a hanging frame for a sign with the apple swinging off of it displaying the bookshops name.

Timescales:
You should prepare a production schedule that will allow you to manage your time over
the 3 weeks of production. This should include:
• Deadlines: Interim deadlines help you keep on track, final deadlines are final.
• Availability: The availability of the client and any other people you may need to help
you with your project. You will need to contact them. You might to do visit. You may
need to liaise with models, or photographers.
• Feedback: This is a working brief with a real client. You will need to get feedback on
your work and also allow yourself time to make appropriate changes. Plan appropriate
time in to you schedule so that you can do this.
• Resources: You should include a list of resources that you will need to complete your
project. Remember that this all needs to be your own work

If not finished continue with the Oscar Wilde and finish it. Then move
onto Alice In Wonderland portrait. Try adapting the image to be
rotoscoped but also look at how you could work with the original by
adding on the apples to the try and see how that looks so that it is more
recognizable.

If not finished work on the Alice In Wonderland piece. When finished
move onto the Quote image for the tote bag. (Using the Jane Austen one)
Using the frame and wild flower images already found. Make a mock-up
of what it will look like on the tote bag (Redbubble).

Head into York to see The Little Apple Bookshop and ask them what they
think of the work so far and for any feedback for development. With it,
come back into college to work on it.

Week 2 What you’re going to do: Resources needed:

(15th May)
If there is a lot of feedback, continue working through it over the next few
days. If there is little feedback then continue with other work. Take the
work that you have completed and start adjusting them to be
merchandise. Bookmarks, tote bags, post cards, etc.

Start working on Einstein quote for posters and merchandise. Photoshop

If the Einstein products aren’t finished, continue on with them until
they’re finished. When done work on either the Snow White or Moomin
product for a children’s demographic.

Shrink down the Snow White or Moomin poster to be adjusted to
merchandise. Then go into the York to the client and show them the
adjustments to the feedback they gave, the new products, and the
merchandise.
