This document discusses continuous improvement (CI) in businesses. It provides an overview of CI, including that it typically occurs incrementally over long periods rather than through sudden changes. CI can begin on a small scale in one team or department and expand across the business. The document also discusses implementing a CI mindset and using a Plan-Do-Check-Act model. It provides examples of applying CI to positive, negative, and neutral areas of a business. Finally, it discusses Prasarana's use of innovative convention competitions (ICCs) to promote innovation and CI among its staff.
This is an excerpt from an upcoming book The Lean Engagement Team. It portrays multiple A3s for Sales EDCA/PDCA/SDCA and a sample of Standard Work for a Lean Sales and Marketing Team.
Who we are and what we can do for your company.
We believe that prosperity must include company and workers.
We face every challenge with the right thinking and tool: Lean Six Sigma, simulation, design of experiments, change management, training.
The PDCA cycle is the key principle behind ISO 9001 and all modern management system standards. Because of that, we believe that it's of great benefit if those involved in developing and implementing systems can have a broad understanding of the concept.
So, Qudos has put together a brief introduction in this video. It explains the 4 steps in the cycle, how it can be applied, how it relates to ISO standard clauses, and then provides some examples for each stage of the cycle.

Designing for customer needs frequently leads to higher-quality goods and services in addition to innovative outcomes. This is because an effective design process uncovers hidden customer needs. This discovery, and the subsequent solving of the problems that kept customer needs hidden, will lead to innovation. In this presentation, Juran Global CEO Dr. Joseph A. DeFeo focuses on the 4 steps to drive process innovation that every organization needs to embrace.
Some key points if you are looking to lower costs and increase productivity. This presentation was meant to be a short one hour overview of Process Improvement.

Oprah Winfrey: A Leader in Media, Philanthropy, and Empowerment | CIO Women M...CIOWomenMagazine

The case study discusses the potential of drone delivery and the challenges that need to be addressed before it becomes widespread.
Key takeaways:
Drone delivery is in its early stages: Amazon's trial in the UK demonstrates the potential for faster deliveries, but it's still limited by regulations and technology.
Regulations are a major hurdle: Safety concerns around drone collisions with airplanes and people have led to restrictions on flight height and location.
Other challenges exist: Who will use drone delivery the most? Is it cost-effective compared to traditional delivery trucks?
Discussion questions:
Managerial challenges: Integrating drones requires planning for new infrastructure, training staff, and navigating regulations. There are also marketing and recruitment considerations specific to this technology.
External forces vary by country: Regulations, consumer acceptance, and infrastructure all differ between countries.
Demographics matter: Younger generations might be more receptive to drone delivery, while older populations might have concerns.
Stakeholders for Amazon: Customers, regulators, aviation authorities, and competitors are all stakeholders. Regulators likely hold the greatest influence as they determine the feasibility of drone delivery.
2. Improvement
The term seems fairly simple, but
how does it really play out? What
does continuous improvement look
like when it is implemented in a
business environment? The most
commonly used model is PDCA: Plan,
Do, Check, Act.
2
3. Bits and Bursts of
Improvement
Incremental: Occurring slowly, in bits and pieces, over time
Breakthrough: Occurring all at once, in a burst of change
3
While sudden breakthroughs will occur, the
truth is that CI usually happens incrementally
over a long period of time. Change isn't easy.
Whether your current processes are good or
bad, effective or ineffective, they're deep-seated
habits for your organization.
4. Business Opportunities
Companies implement continuous
improvement in various ways and to
various degrees. It takes a large
commitment to embed the methodology
into the foundation of a company, but as
we mentioned earlier, it doesn’t have to
be used at a large scale in order to be
beneficial. It can begin on a small scale,
with one team or in one department, and
then expand from there into other areas
of the business. You can include
continuous improvement in your day-to-
day practices or hold “rapid improvement
events” once every few months to work
on specific areas of focus 4
5. Continuous
Improvement Mindset
implementing an unfamiliar
methodology. In this case, it is more
about shifting the mindset rather
than adding a process that people
need to learn. Continuous
improvement does not have to add
to your workload--it shouldn’t create
extra steps nor take extra time to
implement. The steps are meant to
be embedded into the work that’s
already being done.
5
6. Improvement Program
approach
6
Outcome-base budgeting: Agile delivery allow continuous
budgeting against changing priorities
New Operating Model:
Modernized, automated tech stack demands new skills,
organization, and delivery model
Modernized Infrastructure:
Virtualized, containerized, and cloud-ready
Identify Problem:
Create idea based on problem at work place
Problem Solving:
investigate, analyse, and find the way to solve the problems
using ICC tools and problem solving process
Testing and Prototyping:
always tested by means of prototypes, test runs, scenarios.
7. Problem in workplace
Consider what to do today and find a way to improve it. Then put in place a way to
measure the improvement and check at regular intervals to see the progress.
Pick three areas where want to apply continuous improvement principles. To help and
understand just how broad and all-encompassing a continuous improvement strategy is,
look for the following examples within your organization:
Negative Case
▪ Choose an aspect of your business that is clearly
in need of improvement. Maybe you’ve been
putting it off or minimizing the negative effect it
has on your business. When it’s obvious that
something is not working the way it should,
finding noticeable improvement is rewarding and
encouraging. It will have a positive effect on your
bottom line and bring attention to the usefulness
of applying continuous process improvement.
Positive Case
▪ Look at your most successful business aspects
and see what you can learn from them. Can you
take best practices and transfer them to other
areas or departments? Is it possible to make
further changes that push these success stories
to the next level? Are the people responsible for
these positive results able to share their
knowledge and skills to other people who will
then become continuous improvement
champions themselves?
7
Neutral Case
▪ Choose a process, part or project that seems to
be in cruise-control mode. These cases can be
challenging, because while there may not be
anything obviously wrong, you may struggle to
pinpoint what can be done to make them better.
You might also be tempted to leave well enough
alone, so a neutral case will help reset your
mindset and get you thinking about continuous
improvement.
