Hydro Test Pump
2. What is Hydro Test Pump?
Hydro test pumps contains a pumping system and
pressure measuring system. To pump liquid in to
closed system it may be hand operated or motor
operated. Bourdon pressure gauge is generally used
for measuring pressure of closed system. Test done
by this kind of pumps is called Hydrostatic Test.
3. Why Hydro Test Pumps Are Used?
Hydro test pumps are the pumps used for checking
leakage of the any closed system. The test involves
filling vessels or pipe system with liquid usually
water, which may contain dye for visual leakage
detection and checking pressure of filled liquid with
pressure gauge. If the pressure varies in pressure
gauge the there is leakage in closed system. Dye
present in liquid shows place where leakage is;
because of it’s bright color which differs from
external surface of the vessel.
4. Types Of Hydrostatic Test Pumps
Manually Operated Pump.
Motor Operated:-
* Single Plunger Pump.
* Triplex Plunger Pump.
Pneumatic Test Pump.
Multi Purpose Test Rig.
5. Main Components Of Hand Operated
Hydrostatic Pump
Cylinder body
Hose pipe
Pressure gauge
Handle
Non-Return Valve(NRV) or Check Valve.
Plunger
6. Cylinder Body
It is a hollow cylinder in which plunger reciprocates,
due to which vacuum is created and water from pile
is sucked and pumped out when plunger moves
down through hose pipe
7. Hose Pipe
A hose pipe is flexible hollow tube designed to carry
fluids fro, one location to another. Hose pipe is are
combination of application and performance.
Common factors are size, pressure, rating, weight,
length, straight hose, coil hose and chemical
composition.
8. Pressure Gauge
For measuring pressure of fluid we have use bourdon
pressure gauge. Reason for selecting bourdon tube
pressure gauge is they are cost-effective, flexible, give
quick reading and response and easy to fit.
9. Handle
Due to it’s more length compare cross section, the
operator has to apply less force to reciprocate
plunger. Handle work on the principle of
momentum.
10. Check Valve
This is the most important component as it maintain
pressure (generated by pumping fluid) in close
system. It stops the back flow of pumped fluid.
11. Plunger
Plunger is component whose length is more then it’s
cross section, and cross section is cylindrical.
Plunger is reciprocated in cylinder body with handle,
due to which vacuum is generated in cylinder body
and water from pile is sucked in
12. Procedure To Operated Pump
Clean the pail thoroughly such that no foreign particles
left in the pail.
Then fill the pail with clean water.
Operate handle up and down, till the water comes out
from the hose pipe (to ensure no air is present).
Now connect nipple of hose pipe with close system.
Operate handle till, required pressure is shown in
pressure gauge.
Then close the check valve (so that pressure developed in
closed system by pumping is maintained).
13. Procedure Continued …..
Wait for sometime, if there is any deflection in dial of
pressure gauge then there is leakage in close system.
To know where is leakage in closed system then mix
dye in water which is filled in pile.
14. Advantages Of Hand Operated Hydrostatic Test
Pump
Mechanism and construction is simple.
Easy to operate.
Low maintenance and initial cost.
Noiseless operation and high reliability.
Provide flexibility while connecting pump with
another system.
Require less attention and skill.
15. Disadvantages Of Hand Operated Hydrostatic
Test Pumps
Not suitable for large vessels.
It is time consuming process.
Limited amount of pressure can be measured.
Require man power to operate pump.
Have to handle with care.
If there is any defect in component of pump then it’s
result will directly affect pressure shown by pressure
gauge.
16. Applications Of Hand Operated Hydrostatic Test
Pumps
To check leakage of any close system.
To increase pressure of any close system by pumping
more fluid and maintaining it.
To measure pressure of any closed system.
