Designers embedded within a large healthcare system have a unique opportunity to work directly with patients, doctors, nurses, and other staff to create significant impact in how healthcare is provided. However, along with this exceptional access come big challenges: complicated bureaucratic power structures, change-adverse organizational cultures, and industry-specific technology constraints. How do designers — often working alone or in small teams — position themselves in order to make a difference in this complex environment?
This session will convene a group of seasoned in-house UX and service designers from diverse healthcare institutions to share stories and examples of their work as they talk about the specific challenges they face and discuss strategies for working more effectively.

Dr. Ronald Yee - 2015 CACHC Conference Presentation
This document discusses the Triple Aim framework for healthcare systems put forth by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. The Triple Aim aims to simultaneously improve patient experience of care, improve population health, and reduce per capita healthcare costs. Examples are provided from community health centers in the US that have successfully implemented initiatives addressing all three aims, such as comprehensive social services programs, risk-stratified patient care management, and value-based payment models. The presentation concludes by encouraging Canadian community health centers to apply the principles of the Triple Aim through data-driven innovation, patient engagement, local partnerships, and continuous quality improvement efforts.

An Evidenced Based Practice (EBP) is an intervention for which there is strong research (randomized clinical trials) demonstrating effectiveness in achieving positive consumer outcomes.
Studies have demonstrated positive outcomes in programs where the most common diagnoses were schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar disorder and consumers showed substantial functional impairment.
Other studies have documented benefits for consumers with co-occurring substance abuse disorders.

Betts Ward is an acute inpatient admission ward within Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust. Betts Ward Implemented the EBCD in July 2012.
Experience based Co-design (EBCD) is a way of improving healthcare services with patients. The patient and the patient only has the privileged knowledge of experience of the services we provide. This knowledge is unique and precious and we must tap into this if we are to make our services more effective and efficient. The recognition of the user experience has been late in mental health and it has tended to be facilitated by separating the user voice from the provider.

“Decisions of value – how the NHS can balance quality and finance in decision-making”
NHS decision-makers have to balance the priorities of quality improvement and financial sustainability, in other words they have to deliver value. This balancing act is increasingly challenging as the demands on the NHS change and grow, with more expected within an ever tighter budget. Decisions of Value is a project commissioned by the Department of Health and led jointly by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and the NHS Confederation. It has spent six months studying what influences how decisions are made and brings together a large amount of research to show how factors such as relationships, behaviours and environment influence the value delivered, extending beyond Whitehall to the front line.
The project’s findings have recently been published and emphasise the importance of the cultural, rather than structural, changes needed to move towards delivering better value and look at how they rely on having the right relationships, behaviours and environments in place. It presents insights into how people interact in the NHS and the crucial factors affecting how they operate within a particular context. In many cases, it indicates a ‘back to basics’ approach that involves a fundamental understanding of how humans interact and operate. As such, it doesn’t look to define good decisions, but rather gives an insight into the principles of good decision-making.

HIPAA HiTech Security Assessment
The HIPAA Security Rule establishes national standards to protect individuals’ electronic personal health information that is created, received, used, or maintained by a covered entity. The Security Rule requires appropriate administrative, physical and technical safeguards to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and security of electronic protected health information. The Security Rule is located at 45 CFR Part 160 and Subparts A and C of Part 164.

There are two main rules for HIPAA. One is a rule on privacy and the other on Security.

The Rule requires appropriate safeguards to protect the privacy of personal health information, and sets limits and conditions on the uses and disclosures that may be made of such information without patient authorization. The Rule also gives patients rights over their health information, including rights to examine and obtain a copy of their health records, and to request corrections. The Privacy Rule is located at 45 CFR Part 160 and Subparts A and E of Part 164.

Introduction
A positive relationship between hospitals and physicians is important to the success of the US healthcare system, because hospitals and physicians can be both collaborators and competitors.
Many hospitals and healthcare systems have moved to various models of physician integration through which hospitals hope to capture market share and physicians seek financial security.
After the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was passed in 2010, physician–hospital alignment became driven by another factor: cost control and quality outcomes in the accountable care era (Reiboldt 2013).
Physicians work in a wide range of settings and serve in leadership positions that have significant responsibility for quality of care.

Health care is the maintenance or improvement of health via prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, illness, injury and other physical and mental impairments in people. It may vary across countries, communities and individuals largely influenced by social and economic conditions as well as health policies. Providing health care services means “the timely use of personal health’s services to achieve the best possible health outcomes." Factors to consider in terms of health care assess include financial limitations, geographical barriers and personal limitations.
Health care systems are organizations established to meet the health needs of targeted populations. A well-functioning health care system requires a financing mechanism, a well-trained and adequately paid workforce, reliable information on which to base decisions and policies, and well-maintained health facilities to deliver quality medicines and technologies (Clin Oral Investing, 2018). An efficient health care system can contribute to a significant part of the country's economy, development and industrialization.
In my project, the organization I selected is Mayo Clinic. The reason for choosing it is because it is mostly ranked the top ten among the best organizations in the US. It contains the best facilities that is advanced technologies and clinical research trials. Most well-known specialists like William James Mayo who is not only the son of the founder on the clinic but also an excellent surgeon, John Kirkland who developed the first commercial heart-lung bypass machine and Earl Wood who is known for the development of G-suit in the US.
Mayo Clinic is a nonprofit academic medical center based in Rochester, Minnesota, focused on integrated clinical practice, education and research. It specializes in treating difficult cases throughout tertiary care and destination medicine. It spends over $660 million a year on research and has more than 3000 full time research personnel. It has major campuses in Arizona and Florida being ranked among the best and maintaining that position for over 27 years.
