Heavy Metal Music Observation And Research
People who listen to heavy metal music are often seen as a minority group in most cultures and
countries, but is it possible that heavy metal music listeners have a distinct culture of their own that
transcends the dividing lines of nations? This paper is intended to research and report the similarities
between heavy metal listeners across the world. In order to do that I will be splitting the world up into
four major categories for observation and research: 1. The United States 2. English speaking Europe
(Ireland, Great Britain) 3. Non English speaking Europe (Finland, Switzerland, France, Italy, Russia,
etc.) 4. Asia (India, Japan, China, Korea, Vietnam, etc.) I do realize that this leaves out some key areas
like The Middle East, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In most non English speaking European nations tobacco use is almost considered a national pastime.
In countries like France and Italy smokers are a majority of the population in general, so the metal
fans do not really stand apart from the cultural norm. In Asian countries smoking is more socially
acceptable than in English speaking countries, but there is a slightly higher rate of smokers who are
metal fans over smokers in the general population. The surveys that have been done in Asian countries
point to a higher rate of hero worship and idolization; being that many heavy metal musicians smoke
and are heroes to their fans this hypothesis makes a lot of sense. Most cultures also have a manner of
dress that is recognizable (although this is becoming rare due to the current globalization trend... with
the 4 different cultural groups that this paper is focusing on the fashion trends are almost identical).
Most heavy metal listeners tend to wear darker clothes (usually blacks and reds), but due to the culture
stressing individuality and truth, the actual manner of dress can vary quite a bit from metalhead to
metalhead. At a concert (no matter which cultural area it s in) the most common attire for a fan is a
black band t shirt or hooded sweatshirt and jeans. Heavy metal fans also tend to have more piercings
and tattoos then non metal fans (many long time fans will actually incorporate bands

Never Let Me Go Visual Art
Kazuo Ishiguru s Never Let Me Go a novel narrated by a young woman, Kathy, who tells stories about
herself and her two close friends, Ruth and Tommy, as they grow up. The trio face many typical trials
and tribulations that are typically associated with coming of age. However, these children are anything
but typical. Set in a dystopian world in England in the seventies and eighties, Kathy, Ruth and Tommy
are all clones, whose purpose in life is to donate their organs for the sake of medicine. They all attend
a special boarding school, Hailsham, that is run by regular humans for clone children. At Hailsham,
creativity is highly valued, and the children are instructed in creating art, such as paintings and poetry.
Madame collects the best of their artwork ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Miss Emily and Madame, two guardians at Hailsham, have founded the school and this gallery in
order to prove that the clones indeed are humans, have souls, and that creating them for the sole
purpose of harvesting their organs is immoral. The gallery is not the best way to prove that Hailsham
students have souls, because visual art is just one specific method of self expression. Miss Emily and
Madame might choose this particular method of proof because visual art is usually considered proof of
creativity, a fundamentally human quality. Human have made art for thousands of years, beginning
with cave paintings. Since then, art has earned a place of value in cultures across the world,
connecting it with the human experience. Art is not the best way of proving that the Hailsham students

Fighting The Fire Syndrome
Fighting the Fire Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is the most painful disease known to
medical science. Greater awareness of CRPS will help people who get misdiagnosed or not diagnosed
soon enough to go into recovery before symptoms become permanent. Learning what CRPS is will
help people learn to live with it while doctors learn how to treat it. In order to help spread awareness
about CRPS first people need to know what it is. It was first described by a doctor treating soldiers
with cannonball injuries in the Civil War, the syndrome has gone by many names over the past 150
years: Causalgia in soldiers, reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome in civilians, and today CRPS
(Lynn Everly). CRPS happens when there is an injury to a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Food and Drug Administration specifically for CRPS. There are many different ways to treat CRPS
but none of the them work for all patients. All known treatments do not completely get rid of the pain
the treatments simply lessen the pain. Since there is not a treatment that works for everyone or that
eliminates all of the pain CRPS is considered an incurable disease. Common medications used for
CRPS are steroids, blood pressure medication, antidepressants, corticosteroids, seizure medication, or
opioids. Physical and occupational therapy are used to keep strength and mobility in the affected
limb(s). It is important to keep the affected limb(s) moving because CRPS thrives on immobility. The
best thing that a person can do for CRPS is to use the affected area as much as possible. Counseling is
used help combat the emotional effects of CRPS. Spinal cord stimulation is a typical treatment. This
happens by doctors surgically implanting electrodes near the spinal cord to stop the chronic pain
signals from reaching the brain. Topical anesthetic creams are made to put on the skin of the infected
area so that the treatment absorbs into the skin where it is needed. Surgical sympathectomy is used as
well but there is much controversy over this procedure where doctors surgically destroy some of the
nerves in the affected area. Some patients and doctors believe that surgical sympathectomy only
makes CRPS

Reflection About Reading
You have to read 10 hours this week said my first grade teacher. In elementary school reading logs
were what all the teachers made us do. Every week I had to read a certain amount of hours. I however,
never read the amount of hours I was supposed too. I would just fill out the log and tell my mom to
sign it. At that time it sounded like a good idea but then came freshman year. Mrs. Daugherty changed
my whole perspective on reading and how important it is to read. In elementary school reading never
came easy too me. My mom would always say The more you read, the better you ll be. but I never
listened to her. Books were just not interesting to me. We would have book fairs in our school library
and I would always ask my grandma to come and buy me a bunch of books, but in reality I never even
read the books that she bought me. I would wonder around the library looking for the perfect book
then once I thought I found one, I would read one chapter then be done with it. Most of the time the
books would just sit in my room until I got a letter from the librarian saying that the book was past
due. Then when I went to return a book, the librarian would always ask How did you like the book?
and I would reply It was great I really enjoyed it! , even though I had never even finished the book. In
Mrs. Daugherty s freshman college prep English class reading was what the majority of the class
consisted of. We were always reading passages and would have to answer questions about

I Choose Maus by Art Spiegleman
I chose Maus by Art Spiegleman. To be honest, I learned about the book from a television show,
Comic Book Men. They were talking about a graphic novel that won the Pulitzer. That peaked my
interest, so I decided to research the topic of the book. When I discovered that it was an autobiography
about a complex relationship between a father and son, I firmly wanted to read it. The son learning of
his father s story of the holocaust was his way of to understand himself and his heritage and the
journey is fascinating. When this assignment for generalist practice two came up, I jumped at the
opportunity.
Maus is a graphic novel. A graphic novel is predominantly told with pictures over words. This novel in
particular relies on a strong and realistic artwork to tell its story along with the imagery of mice. The
novel was released in two parts, the book format is the two parts put together. It is divided into five
chapters, and has 296 pages. The first part was published in 1973 and was completed with the second
portion in 1991 to create the final complete book. This was clearly a labor of love and a tribute to his
father.
There are a multitude of issues in Maus. Loss of loved ones, couple s troubles, competition of dead
loved ones, are just to name a few. This treatment will be focused on repairing the father and son
relationship. Strained since childhood, their relationship has gotten progressively worse since the
death of Art s mother. Art struggles to understand his father on

An Analysis of the Second to Last Paragraph in Flannery O Connor s A Late Encounter with the
Enemy
This essay analyzes the first full paragraph on page143 (the second to last paragraph in the story) that
begins with The speaker was through with that war... . This passage appears to be what is going
through General Sash s head right before he dies. The passage begins by saying The speaker was
through with that war and had gone onto the next one and now he was approaching another . The
general goes on to state that all his words are vaguely familiar. This is because he has lived through all
of these wars and as the speaker mentions them they all go by in the General s mind as blurred events
of the past. The General calls the graduates ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This I first thought may have had some racial implications, but we later see it is a reference to death.
The fact that he has seen the processional before shows that he has been near death before.
The next part of the section discusses a long finger of music in the General s head, probing various
spots . The music that he is hearing is going into his head and triggering select memories from his
past. The depiction of this probing as a long finger is very invasive and shows how deep these
memories run. Next a series of black things come toward the General and images of the procession
start to break up. There are images of the Civil war like the musket fire as he feels himself moving
backwards. The images then become very violent with sharp stabs of pain and his body riddled in a
hundred places . I imagine this is when he is dying. This is followed by images of the General s
family. At previous moments in the story, we are told the General cannot remember his family that has
passed on, it is only at moments before his death that he remembers them. He remembers very specific
things about them like his wife s narrow face and gold rimmed glasses and his bald headed sons. Here
the General says that the black processional was almost on him . It is here we see the processional is
clearly a reference to death taking him away. When he died he said his hand

Analysis Of Sonnet By William Shakespeare
Sonnet to science is a Lyric poem that gets ones attention from the first word. This Sonnet has high
diction that through out the poem makes the readers aware of a serious concern the poet is trying to
express. The title Sonnet to Science , can instantly bring to mind that the poem praise to science,
however as the poem goes on, readers will realize is the exact opposite. The poem was written in the
year 1829 right in the middle of the industrial revolution going on in Europe, a revolution that would
affect every aspect of how things were done, and eventually translate to the United States. Basically
many duties and tasks that were agrarian and rural became more industrial and urban. This could be
the reason why Poe is starting to feel overwhelm by the changes science is doing in Society. The poem
is being narrated by a poet that is worried and concerned about the danger of science and all the
pleasures that science is ripping away from artists. With the emphatic use of literary devices such as
metaphors allusions and high diction, it is seen that the poet sees Science as an enemy and the cause of
destruction of a poet s fantasies and peaceful summer dream beneath the tamarind tree.
Sonnet to Science , is a classic English or Shakespearean Sonnet of Iambic Pentameter divided into 3
quatrains and 1 couplet. It follows an ABAB CDCD EFEF GG rhyme scheme making it easy to catch
the rhymes for the readers.
The first quatrain sets up the theme. It tells the readers that the

The Fasb s Agenda Of Accounting For Goodwill
Abstract.
This paper examines the FASB s agenda of accounting for goodwill in public and not for profit
entities. Research shows they are looking at four alternatives for accounting for goodwill in these
entities. There is no projected completion date as of March 2015. The adoption of this proposal does
not appear to help converge U.S. GAAP and IFRS.
Introduction.

Body.
Background:
In 2001, FASB Statement No. 142 Goodwill and Other Intangible Assets replaced APB Opinion No.
17 Intangible Assets (issued in 1970) (Hillenmeyer McMillen, 2013). The new statement eliminated
goodwill amortization which was previously amortized over its useful life at a maximum of 40 years.
Statement No. 142 required that goodwill be tested for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 2013, the Board endorsed the Private Company Council decision to give private companies an
alternative to amortize goodwill and simplify the impairment test. After much feedback, there was an
indication that many public and not for profit (NFP) business entities share similar concerns of cost
and complexity on the annual goodwill impairment test. As a result, the Board added this project to its
agenda. The objective of this project is to reduce the cost and complexity of the subsequent accounting
for goodwill for public business entities and NFP entities. This project will determine if certain
intangible assets, such as customer relationships and non compete agreements, should be included in
goodwill. Research will be done to identify the most appropriate useful life of goodwill if it were to be
amortized and on simplifying the impairment test (Hillenmeyer McMillen, 2013).
Examples of Previous Method: Like other public companies, Coca Cola and Macy s have the option of
performing a qualitative assessment of goodwill before completing the quantitative two step process
described in FASB Statement No. 142. Coca Cola and Macy s both test intangible assets that have
indefinite useful lives, such as goodwill, annually for impairment or more frequently if economic

Essay on Review of Film The World is Not Enough
Review of Film The World is Not Enough
The greatest spy the world has ever known returns for yet another adventure. Once again the British
secret service has to save the world from certain chaos and destruction and only one man is good
enough for the job, that man is Bond…James Bond . We all know the format, but we love it. The title
is The World is Not Enough , and is the final Bond film of the twentieth century, finishing the
millennium with the usual mix of guns, girls and gadgets.
The film utilises exotic locations around the world and yet manages to make London look good. The
Dome at the time of filming was innovative and hadn t yet been reduced to a joke by the general
public. The sets ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The film fits into the usual Bond criteria. It has explosions, guns, gadgets, girls (foreign girls of
course), chases and cars. There are many close escapes; the best being when Bond escapes from the
nuclear facility in Azabaizan. He is propelled out of the secret tunnels followed by a huge fireball.
The stunts and special effects are staggering. How did they get Bond to fall from an exploding balloon
on to the Dome and bounce down as if was a perfectly normal activity? How did they blow up an
entire mountain? At the climatic ending Bond escapes from the villains lair with a girl, whilst blowing
the whole place up! The stunt people and special effects people must have seemingly magical powers.
No other film character or secret agent can outclass Bond!
Director Michael Apted has created a film that proceeds at a good pace with a strong, straightforward
story line, and yet also includes interesting and sometimes stunning locations. It is his first
action/adventure film, previously making his name as director of Gorillas in the Mist a true life,
documentary style film. He directs the scenes well and controls them with skill, in turn bringing out
the best in Pierce Brosnan, the cool shaken, not stirred Bond and the evil Renard, (Robbie Carlyle).
Throughout the film, we are reminded that

Karl Marx s Views on Religion
Karl Marx has greatly influenced the creation of the modern world and was one of the first
revolutionary communist. Through his literary works and philosophies he helped to inspire many 20th
century communist regimes including the Soviet Union, China, Cuba, and North Korea. Marx s ideas
did not end at communism; his religious ideology also helped shape and mold the 20th century world.
Karl Marx was born in 1818 in Trier, Germany and died in 1883. He was a philosopher who turned to
economics and politics in his mid 20 s. His family was Jewish but they converted to Christianity so
that Marx s father might pursue his career as a lawyer. Marx studied law in Berlin and then wrote a
thesis for his doctorate in philosophy. Marx had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the preface to his doctoral dissertation, Marx adopted as his motto the words of the Greek hero
Prometheus who defied the gods to bring fire to humanity: I hate all gods, with addition that they do
not recognize man s self consciousness as the highest divinity (Marx).
Third, religion is hypocritical. Although it might profess valuable principles, it sides with the
oppressors. Jesus advocated helping the poor, but the Christian church merged with the oppressive
Roman state, taking part in the enslavement of people for centuries. In the Middle Ages the Catholic
Church preached about heaven, but acquired as much property and power as possible.
Martin Luther preached the ability of each individual to interpret the Bible, but sided with aristocratic
rulers and against peasants who fought against economic and social oppression. According to Marx,
this new form of Christianity, Protestantism, was a production of new economic forces as early
capitalism developed. New economic realities required a new religious superstructure by which it
could be justified and defended. In addition to critiquing religion, Karl Marx wrote about the basic
ideologies and principles on socialism and communism. In The Communist Manifesto, Marx
discusses the problems facing society and how the government is responsible for this. According to
Marx, the East Indian and Chinese markets, the colonization of America, and trade with the

The Video Of Obama s 2008 Election Speech
Could Smell like this commercial first aired right before the 2010 Super bowl, and ended up going
viral. In fact, it became so popular that it ended up gaining more YouTube views than the video of
Obama s 2008 election speech within the first 24 hours of their postings. Additionally, since the
release of the commercial, there has been a 300% increase in traffic to the Old Spice website, and Old
Spice now has the most viewed sponsored YouTube channel. About the Commercial, since it s a
means of propaganda, there is a high amount of sensationalism in the text. For example, the gradual
transition from the ordinary (a man stepping out of the shower), to the bizarre (a shirtless man riding a
horse on a beach), helps emphasize the fact that everything is possible with Old Spice. Overall, the
text is very persuasive not because of its reasonable logic, but because of its emotion driven hyperbole
that appeals to the audience s sense of humor. Evaluation Hello, ladies, look at your man, now back to

James C Collins Clock Building, Not Time Telling
This paper will explore the concept of Clock Building, Not Time Telling, as presented by James C.
Collins and Jerry I. Porras in their book, Built To Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies.
The goal is to identify the underlying reason and rational behind architects of visionary companies and
how they left their mark for generations to come through something larger than a single act or product.
Through compelling facts and research about companies, a change in thought has occurred. For the
enterprises and start ups of tomorrow, leaders must strive to be clock builders. By becoming these
grand architects, the leader s greatest creation, the company itself and what it stands for, (Collins and
Porras 23) must stand above and beyond anything else. This is the crucial claim discovered by Collins
and Porras by investigating key factors. Through exploring two entrenched business myths, they
revealed that visionary companies were built upon something greater and grander than originally
thought. They began to evaluate various companies roots and leadership, finding astonishing
correlations that change the landscape and mindset of company development. Simply being able to tell
the time will not cut it in the business world; one must build a clock from the ground up to truly
succeed.
To develop an understanding of Clock Building, Not Time Telling, we will first explore the two myths
of the business world that are engrained in the minds of individuals thought to achieve

Apothecary In The Colonial Era
Trades There were many interesting trades presented on this website. One of these trades that
interested me the most was apothecary. Apothecary in the colonial era was a druggist who had a
similar roles to what a doctor does today. They didn t just provide medical treatment, or prescribe
drugs but also performed surgeries as well. Reading more about this trade, I discovered that some
apothecaries even trained to become man midwives. Before reading this article, I had the assumption
that the majority of mid wives were female, and that most men didn t handle child birth in that time
era. Furthermore, some of the ingredients used in colonial remedies, that is still found in modern
medicine. Some include, but are limited to; chalk for heartburn (Tums), calamine for skin irritations
(Aveeno lotions) and many more. Like many drug stores today, apothecaries also sold household items
and not just drugs. The next most interesting trade in the colonial period was Gunsmiths. It is very
neat to me how the gunsmiths didn t only work with metals but also with wood. In fact, the stock of a
gun was made with one piece of wood and later engraved. Even the metal used in the guns were
intricately engraved as well. The gunsmith wasn t just limited to making firearms ... Show more

I began to be a volunteer to read mandarin stories to students in mandarin grades three and four in
Dovercourt School in Oct 14 and Oct 16. On the one hand, I believe that volunteering activity can
create my credibility, build self confidence, develop self awareness, and share the vision. On the other
hand, the motivation behind volunteer activity will benefit for those students who need help improve

How was this activity chosen?
When I picked the volunteer project, I have been the volunteer in my son s school for several years. I
like to be a volunteer to participate the activity with kids since they are so creative and lovely.
Furthermore, the most important point is that I would like to observe my son s development closely.
First, I contacted my son s Chinese teacher Ms. Lennon, who is very strict and responsible, and tell
her my requirement. She was very supported my decision and let me to read stories to her students.
Therefore, I became a volunteer to read mandarin stories this week for my son and his classmates.
On this Monday, she emailed me to ask me whether I can come and

Summary Of 1000 Splendid Suns By Khaled Hossieni
People in first world countries with privileges tend to overlook their good fortune and take everything
for granted. Women in third world countries such as Afghanistan can only dream of the privileges and
opportunities that would be given to them if one were to live in Canada, for example. Recently, media
had been continuously trying to stress this concept of privilege difference to the Public. Attempting to
amplify the amount of gratitude and thankfulness that people express for the good life they have been
given. The novel 1000 splendid suns by Khaled Hossieni is a wonderful written example of this, as it
explores the lives of two Afghan woman and their everyday struggle with oppressing forces in every
aspect of their lives. Visual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hossieni s most prevalent examples that prove this theory deal with woman being forced into
marriages, and how it can often lead to devastating consequences. The earliest example readers are
exposed to occurs after Rasheed looser his temper on Mariam. The author says this Mariam chewed.
Something at the back of her mouth cracked. Good Rasheed said Now you know what your rice tastes
like. Now you know what you ve given me in this marriage. Bad food and nothing else (Hossieni
104). After Mariam fails to cook a meal within her husband s standards it causes him to react in an
irrational way. However, the deeper meaning behind this act was Rasheed s anger and disgust in
Mariam for failing to bear a male child, proving that there isn t a sense of respect of love for his wife.
If their marriage was built on the foundation of love, then this would not have been a problem.
However since she was forced in the marriage by her father, she is given no such comfort. Many
people will read this passage and think that Hossieni is just over exaggerating to entice his audience to

Air Force Of Gravity Lab Report
Background Theory:
The theory behind this lab is that, through various calculations, the value of gravity can be accurately
calculated. The dropping of two masses on a pulley gives the necessary components needed to
calculate the value of gravity. This will help prove the theory that gravitational acceleration should be
9.80 m/s2 due to the gravitational pull of earth on objects. (Jones, 2012)
In this experiment, there are no forces acting in the horizontal direction, as it is at rest and there is no
acceleration or motion in the horizontal direction. However, in the horizontal direction, there is the
force of tension (FT) acting upwards, as the rope is holding it, while there is a force of gravity (Fg)
acting downward, as the force of gravity is always acting downwards (DiGiuseppe, 2012). In the
horizontal direction the net force (Fnet) would be zero as there are no ... Show more content on

Newtons Second Law states that if the net force on an object is not zero, there is acceleration present
in the direction of the net force. (DiGiuseppe, 2012). Through this the lab should be executed with a
high degree of effectiveness due to the background knowledge obtained and various concepts learnt,
the lab should contain relatively accurate information if performed right, along with following the
background theory ideas presented so that our calculations can be accurately made. Percentage

obtained by the experiment. The equation is |(experimental theoretical)/(theoretical)| ×100

The New Ways Of Thinking Influenced The Renaissance
Humanism is derived from the movement that happened from the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries.
The start point of Humanism is in Italy. It is an important development during the Renaissance.
Because of the terrible Black Death in 14th century. The population of Europeans decreased
extremely. A lot of people died of the Black Death. At the beginning of that time, people thought the
Black Death is God s punishment for living life in sin. People went to Church and hope the
forgiveness of God. However, the wide spread of the Black Death didn t stop. The dead body forced
the people started finding the other new way. Instead of believing in God, people started to think about
science. The scientists did the research and treated the Black Death by more scientific way. People
started thinking about the man himself and explored natural environment by more scientific method.
The new ways of thinking influenced the development of Humanism in art during the Renaissance.
The Renaissance artworks are about the re discovery of ancient Greek and Roman artworks and their
way of life. Humanists rejected the religion concept and not believe in the supernaturalism. They tried
to discover the natural creatures and destiny of man. Artists learned the human beauty from the ancient
Greek and Roman artworks and architectures. They began to find out more ideas about the human
experience, personal independence and social community. They brought the Humanism ideas into
their artworks. Humanism

8 Reasons Why It s Good to be Petite Despite societal implications to the contrary, having a
diminutive stature is not a deformity. There are many advantages to being small. According to several
research studies, shorter people may even enjoy certain health benefits including a decreased risk of
certain types of cancers. Aside from the possibility of increased longevity, here are some other perks
short people can appreciate. 1. Literally Not Having One s Head in the Clouds Being closer to the
Earth means not running into low hanging tree branches or hitting your head on cabinets, light
fixtures, mobiles or other decorative objects hanging from above. Also, being lower to the ground

Extra Space/Room to Stretch Out Tiny people don t feel cramped riding in coach on an airplane, and
some can curl their legs up under them in office chairs at work. Sometimes, it s just more comfortable
to sit that way, especially if the office is cold. And, it may be a bit of a challenge, but smaller folks can
change clothes in tiny cars and pickup trucks. An example of this being useful is when you arrive at
the beach in jeans but want to change into shorts for a jog. Instead of having to switch clothing in a
gross public bathroom, changing in the car is a more convenient option. 3. Better Hiding
Spots/Getting Into Tight Spaces You never know when an impromptu game of hide and seek could
arise. Or when you might have to hide from an axe murderer. The smaller you are, the tighter the spot
you can fit into. 4. Always the Right Height Means Never Intimidating A petite woman can wear the
highest heels and never worry about towering awkwardly over her man. Instead, she feels feminine
and attractive standing next to him. Further, she and her mate will never fight over t shirts or jackets,
as hers will be much too small for him. 5. Some Careers are Not for Tall

Laser Crack Measurement System for Pavement-Management Sytems
Pavement management systems (PMS) can work effectively only when they are constructed by
organically combining all activities concerned with road pavement (planning, design, construction,
maintenance, rehabilitation, evaluation, economic analysis, and research) and the data bank [1]. Then,
the most important items are the establishment of a serviceability index, which represents pavement
quality, and a prediction of performance, which is represented by the relation between time (and/or
traffic) and the index. Pavement quality consists of two primary factors: riding quality and skid
resistance. The factors influencing riding quality are pavement distress and/or roughness. Three major
factors of pavement distress are cracking, rutting, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, measuring the macro texture is one of the essential components in pavement management
applications.
The requirements for acquiring these factors are the following: (1) That data acquisition cost is as
cheap as possible; (2) that data analysis can be done in a short time; and (3) that data acquisition doesn
t influence the speed of other traveling vehicles, in particular on roads with heavy traffic [2].
Pavement surface distress measurement is an essential part of a pavement management system (PMS)
for determining cost effective maintenance and rehabilitation strategies. Visual surveys conducted by
engineers in the field are still the most widely used means to inspect and evaluate pavements, although
such evaluations involve high degrees of subjectivity, hazardous exposure, and low production rates.
Consequently, automated distress identification is gaining wide popularity among transportation
agencies [6]. With the advancement of 3D sensor and information technology, a high resolution, high
speed 3D line laser imaging system has become available for pavement surface condition data
collection. With the advances in sensor technology, a 3D line laser imaging based pavement surface
data acquisition system has become available. The Laser Crack Measurement System (LCMS) [7] can

Essay about Jane Addams
An American pragmatist and feminist, Hull House founder Jane Addams (1860 1935) came of age in
time of increasing tensions and division between segments of the American society, a division that
was reflected in debates about educational reform. In the midst of this diversity, Addams saw the
profoundly interdependent nature of all social and political interaction, and she aligned her efforts to
support, emphasize and increase this interdependence. Education was one of the ways she relied on to
overcome class disparity, as well as to increase interaction between classes. Her theories about the
interdependent nature of living in a democracy provided a backdrop for her educational theory.
Education, she thought, needed to produce people who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They have no common, collective faith. The labor movement in America displays this mark of its
youth and immaturity (Addams 61). In the same tone, she believed that the working class and
capitalists were not warring classes, but part of the same democratic society. The character of
American unions was predicted by Addams to be limited and disappointing. She supported the
workers goals of a shorter workday, increased wages, better industrial and general education, and
worker protection in the marketplace, but qualified her support when she wrote that the movement
does not want to lose sight of the end in securing the means, nor assume success, nor even necessarily
the beginnings of success, when these first aim are attained (Addams 62). Addams saw the definition
of society as warring classes as one that damned society as a whole. The literal notion of brotherhood
demanded a beginning of universal kinship: before this larger vision of life there can be no perception
of sides and battle array (Addams 64). Labor unions became, in fact, the tools of capitalists by
reducing their talks to single industry issues. Addams clearly did not support the Marxist vision of
labor, although she frequently read writers adopting this perspective. As a pragmatist, Addams
advocated a number of laws to protect the worker, especially women workers, which

Cross Cultural Dynamics Is A Transformative And Dynamic...
Course Learning Journal
The course, Cross Cultural Dynamics, is a transformative and dynamic program at Oxford Graduate
School that prepares students to meet the 21st century challenges of diversity in cultures to impact
both global and national workforce, organizations, and political institutions. The program also
incorporates religion, especially Christianity as an enduring and possibly inexorable factor, fostering
growth and understanding within and across cultures, values, norms and traditions to promote
communication and peace worldwide. This trend is closely aligned with philosophical issues of
humanity, beginning with the historical precedence set by Jesus working within and across varied
cultures, reconciling the ills of the world with the laws of God that not only peace must abound but
that salvation is assured for all who believe in the Word of God. The principal elements of the course
consist of cross cultural work that deals with complex worldviews on human relations, communicating
the Gospel in a complex and changing demography, and cross cultural framework built on the
integration of theological, biblical, and philosophical concepts on a global and postmodern society.
The program was both thought provoking and worthwhile. It sublimes Oxford Graduate School s
philosophy of incorporating religion and society through the various disciplines of adult learners to
transform the family, church, and community worldwide. Moreover, the core curriculum at Oxford

Feminist Lens In The Painted Door By Sinclair Ross
People often do things out of character when faced with boredom. In The Painted Door by Sinclair
Ross it is evident through the Feminist lens that Ann decided to cheat on her husband in an attempt to
escape her dull lifestyle. Her actions were caused by her unhappy marriage, her sense of self
importance and her overdependence on men. Ann seemed devoted to, albeit frustrated with, her
husband John. When the humdrum life of a farmer wife finally got to her she ended up doing
something horrible.
Throughout the short story The Painted Door the narrator explains Ann and John s troubled marriage.
According to Ann, John was unattractive, heavy jowled, and stooped (Ross 4). He never wanted to

which continued her lifetime as a plain farmers wife. While John was out in the storm he had left Ann
to her own devices, Steven showed up to save the day, regardless of the fact that he had a stable of his
own to look after (Ross 3). This fueled her need to feel significant and gave her a feeling John never

father anyway (Ross 5). This furthered Ann s idea that John may not brave the storm to come home to
her. As the night went on, Steven continued to convince her that John would not be arriving. Steven
made Ann feel as though her husband had abandoned her, and that he was the only one that would be
there to help her when John did not return. This pushed her need to feel important into her much
deeper need to be cared for, which, in the end, resulted in her adulteress

The Synthesis And Fabrication Of Conductive Polymers Essay
Abstract
Conductive polymers have promising applications in the field of tissue engineering as tissue scaffolds.
Many tissue types respond favorably to electrical stimulation, because of this conductive polymers can
be used for the regeneration of damaged tissue. This review will focus on the synthesis and fabrication
of conductive polymers as well as their applications in tissue engineering.
Introduction
All cells exhibit some form of electrical excitability, from voltage gated ion channels to muscle
contractions and heart beats electromagnetic fields are critical to the basic functions of life. Galvani
famously showed in 1794 that a frog leg will contract when touched with the cut sciatic nerve of the
other leg. This scientific breakthrough led to extensive research of electromagnetism within organisms.
Electromagnetic fields have been found to affect a variety of biological processes including
angiogenesis, cell division, cell signaling, nerve sprouting, prenatal development, and wound healing
[1]. Only in recent decades with the development of molecular and cellular technology has the link
between cell biology and bioelectricity been discovered [2]. This growth in understanding has led to
the development of a variety of electrically conductive devices for uses in biomedical engineering.
Devices that use electrical stimulation that have already been approved by the FDA include the
pacemaker, deep brain stimulators and vagal nerve stimulators [1].

Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University
Alabama A M is better known as Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University. This is a
historically black university. Alabama A M is located just a few miles from where the originally was
built in Normal AL. Its first president, Dr. William Hooper Council, an ex slave, established this
university. In 1875 Alabama officials used the Morrill Act of 1862 that allowed state government to
establish schools for black teachers and students. Alabama A M University was one of seventeen new
land grant black institutions established under the Morrill Act. When the doors of the school swung
open in 1875 the name was Huntsville Normal School and was located in downtown Huntsville,
Alabama. The school consisted of only 61 students and 2 teachers. In 1878 the school developed an
industrial education program, and due to the success of the program the school petitioned to change its
name to State Normal and Industrial School in Huntsville. The Alabama Legislature approved their
request and also rose the funding from 1,000 dollars to 4,000 dollars per year. Under the second
Morrill Act in 1890, the university received government funded land for the first time. Having this
land allowed students to study agriculture and mechanical studies. In 1896 the name was renamed the
State Agricultural and Mechanical College for Negroes. In 1919, institution became recognized as a
junior college and was renamed again as the State Agricultural and Mechanical Institute for Negros.

country. Remittances appear to raise average incomes for all income groups but more so for the richer
households than for the poorer ones, a finding that is consistent with that in several Latin American
countries. Such eyeballing of the data is supported by econometric analysis which further reveals that
remittances enhance household savings, spending on education and health care, and help the poor

Because international migrants typically are among the better educated and experienced workers in the
home country, their departure often results in a disruption of economic activity before the vacancies
are filled. And even when these are filled, the situation may not be the same as before. Labor market
responses would depend on the composition of emigration and the nature of labor markets in terms of
flexibility, segmentation, and rates of un and under employment. Lucas (2005) reports two general
types of outcomes: (i) where emigrant workers are easily replaced with no discernible loss in output or
rise in wages (e.g., India, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka); and (ii) where upward pressure on wages is
palpable (e.g., Pakistan, Philippines, Mexico, Malawi, and Mozambique).1 In both cases, the labor
market outcome appears to be beneficial to those left behind. 1 Tan (2007), however, finds no

Horse Ride Research Paper
Riding horses is fun, but there are many points that you should know before you start to ride. First of
all, you should learn how to care for a horse. Next, you should know how to train an unbroken horse.
Finally, you can learn how to really ride First of all, you should learn how to care for the horse before
you ride. When you have a horse, you need to feed it and give it fresh water every morning and night.
I prefer to feed my horse at 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. You also should get in the habit of grooming at
least every other day, if not every day. You should get a soft bristled brush, a stiff bristled brush, a
curry comb, a hoof pick, and a mane and tail comb. These should all be used when grooming. Also,

Examples Of Informal Letter To Javaria And Vania
Mike, Below is my proposed email. I am assuming that it will come from you, but I am happy to send
it to Javaria and Vania if you wish. Please let me know if you want any additional information.
Thanks, Jim Hello Javaria and Vania, The Office of the Inspector General requested that we advise it
by Monday if we would agree to produce Danielle Hill for an informal interview. The interview would
not be recorded and Ms. Hill would not be placed under oath. Moreover, our office and a
representative from United, if desired, would represent her during the proceeding. The interview
would take place at our office on a date convenient to all the participants, although the OIG would like
to proceed as soon as possible. If the parties agree to the interview, we recommend that we schedule a
meeting with Ms. Hill a day or two beforehand in order to prepare her ... Show more content on

However, in the event the OIG issues a report upon its completion of its investigation, a copy of the
summary, with all contact information redacted, would be provided to the Mayor s Office, Corporation
Counsel, and the Department of Aviation. With regard to the subpoenas, the OIG is currently not
pursuing the materials and information requested therein. Unfortunately, it would not agree to
withdraw the subpoenas at this time, but it is open to discussing the topic after Ms. Hill s interview.
The OIG also indicated that it might wish to speak with Jennifer Kirkendahl, but again, it will not
make that decision until after talking with Ms. Hill. We recommend that United agree to produce Ms.
Hill for an informal interview under the terms set out above. We believe such an agreement will
demonstrate United s willingness to cooperate and will assist in persuading the OIG to withdraw its
subpoenas. Therefore, kindly advise at your convenience if we are authorized to produce Ms. Hill for

Abuse and Heredity
Abuse and Heredity Research question: Is child abuse hereditary?
There are many types of abuse such as alcohol abuse, drug abuse, domestic abuse just to name a few
but of all the types of abuse there is one type of abuse that is probably one of the easiest to pass down
and that is child abuse. Child abuse is easy to pass down because we look to what we know when were
not certain what to do. The term for passing down child abuse is known as intergenerational abuse.
There are four methods of child abuse and they are physical, sexual, neglect, and emotional abuse
(Baltes, Smelser, Pg 1672). In the study of a sixteen year old mother who had been abused her whole
life, it was found that the mother resorted to spanking her five month old ... Show more content on

Capaldi and Pears studies show that abuse is found in low socioeconomical environments and also
with relatively young parents (2001, pg 1442). Bensley says one process of intergenerational abuse is
the normative beliefs regarding appropriate parenting behaviors, which she describes as believing that
certain abusive behavior are normal ( Bensley, Ruggles, Simmons, Harris, Williams, Putvin, Allen,
2003, pg 1323). Which supports the idea that an abusive parent justifies abuse as a legitimate
punishment ( Bensley, Ruggles, Simmons, Harris, Williams, Putvin, Allen, 2003, pg 1331). Graur
identifies 3 different cause of child abuse and neglect, the first cause is called the economic theory
which says economic depression or socioemotional difficulties cause rejection behaviors on the part of
the parent (1996, p.55 56). The second cause is called the ecological theory which says any disorder
affecting society will also affect the family (1996, p. 56). The third and final cause of neglect found by
Graur is called the personality theory which states that traits such as low self esteem, sadness, and
previous experiences affect the way a parent acts towards a child (1996, p.56). In the article titled
Child abuse there are 4 main cause of child abuse identified, the first has to do with life history and
personality meaning their own experiences as a

The Second Tier Of The American Federal Court System
The first tier of the American federal court system is the U.S. District Court. The U.S. District Court
acts as a trial court, norm enforcement, and makes policies. Everyone is entitled to a trial via the Sixth
and Seventh Amendment for criminal and civil cases. Therefore, the U.S. District Court sees
numerous cases. This court hears criminal and civil cases per the trial courts where attorneys are able
to examine and cross examine witness before a jury of their peers. All federal cases go before the U.S.
District Courts including criminal cases, civil cases, bankruptcy cases, etc. The second tier of the
American federal court system is the U.S. Court of Appeals. The U.S. Court of Appeals act as
reviewers and policymakers. This court reviews cases that litigants are disappointed with the decision
the lower courts made. The U.S. Court of Appeals is more likely to make policy on a regional basis
rather than a federal basis. The U.S. Court of Appeals hears numerous cases. They have zero control
over which cases are brought before them. Since the U.S. Court of Appeals have several cases brought
before them they start with a screening process to decide whether an appeal should receive a full
review or to dispose of it. Once it is decided if a case is receiving a full review the cases are brought
before a three judge panel. Once the cases are assed the screening process the attorneys argue their
case before the three judge panel. After the oral arguments have been completed the

Causes Of Colonialism In Canada
When looking at Canada as a whole, we often tend to overlook the past events of Indigenous groups
who have suffered through Colonialism. As I read about this issue, I felt sympathy for the Indigenous
peoples, as it was overwhelming for me to find out that this much discrimination has occurred in a
nation as diverse and developed as Canada. Reading more about colonization helped me to make
connections between the issues and topics I have learned about in class, and how they can be traced
back to European contact with the Indigenous peoples. The Colonial powers in Canada rested in the
hands of the British and the French, who declared sovereignty over the territories which rightfully
belonged to the Indigenous peoples (Cochrane et al. 70). The worst effect of colonialism is the
exploitation, domination, and subjugation of the people by the imperial power (Cochrane et al. 71).
Due to the fact that their rights were determined solely by the white society s rules, one of the only
governance options left for Indigenous peoples was to become independent of the Canadian state
(Cochrane et al. 87). The Royal Proclamation Act of 1763 guaranteed the protection of lands for
Indians under the Crown, and required any colonists occupying Indian lands without the permission of
the crown to evacuate; however, these rights to Indians have been much ignored (Cochrane et al. 70).
During post confederation, several treaties numbered 1 11 were created to allow aboriginals to claim
land titles,

Emily Dickinson s I Heard A Fly Buzz When I Died
Emily Dickinson is one the greatest poetry writer, and she is known for one of her master piece, I
heard a Fly buzz when I died . During most of Dickinson s life, she spent most her time in isolations,
locked in her room and working on poetries. Upon her death, Dickinson s family discovered nearly
1,800 poems in her room. Notably, Dickinson often brings up death in her poem, such as sorrow, pain,
loneliness, etc. Dickinson obsession with death and after death of an individual, as Amitabh stated in
her literary journals Her immediate interest in the death poems is to dramatise the event of death, to
bring out the tension or conflict that such a particular event will have on the minds of human beings.
(CITE). In this case, Dickinson s unique ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In I hear a Fly buzz when I died , there are several ways to interpret death due to it ambiguous
definition in literature. For instance, death can be seen more as a disappointment than something to
look forward to. One might suggest that death can help end all the struggles and stresses one face,
however, that s not the case in Dickinson s poem. As the speaker points out, The Eyes around had
wrung them dry and I willed my Keepsakes Signed away . In this case, the speaker s relatives
surround the speaker s death bed sobbing, and the speaker s belongs were Signed away . Also, it is
often associated that after one s death, he or she will head to the light at the end of the tunnel and be
greeted by an angel. Instead, the speaker Could not see to see , signifying that there are nothing at the
end of the tunnel except for utter darkness. Overall, Dickinson is questioning the validity of whether
death is something to look forward to the existence of afterworld. Another way to depict death from
this poem is its inevitability and loneliness. While reading through the poem, it does not sound very
hopeful, just like someone waiting patiently for his or her death to come. This illustrates that everyone
s fate is death at the end, and it is a long and lonely

Mary Todd Mary Todd Summary
The main idea of the book was love. It was a love that lasted through all the hardships, controversies,
and death. Mary Todd, a Kentuckian from a wealthy family with an interest in politics caught the eye
of a young lawyer named Abraham Lincoln. Even during the war, where her family was confederates
and they were dying, both Abraham and Mary knew that they were doing the right thing in preserving
the Union. After Abraham Lincoln died, she blamed herself and became mental unstable and
eventually died. Her whole life was full of both love and despair.
They first met at a dance in Springfield, Illinois in 1839; Mary Todd was from Kentucky and was
older and wiser than most of the other girls at the dance. The older men liked to talk to her and ...

While the prices for furniture, china, and wallpaper were reasonable considering the times, people said
she was misusing funds. She now had a reputation as an insatiable shopper. Their sons, Tad, Edward,
Willie, and Robert were both criticized and loved. They were called undisciplined brats, but they were
also praised for their intelligence and charm. But Mrs. Lincoln didn t care because love meant
everything to her and family always came first. Tad was her most favorite out of the four boys; she
said that his death hurt her more than her husband s death. Both Edward and Willie died early and her
heart turned cold on Robert because he had her committed for insanity. The day of Abraham s death,
she admitted that they were holding hands during the play and after John Wilkes Booth shot him.
William H. Herndon, her enemy, tarnished her image beyond repair. He said Mary made Lincolns
home hell on earth, harassed and nagged Lincoln day and night, and only marrying him as revenge for
him failing to show up on their first date. He also said that Lincoln never loved her. After about a year
after Lincoln s assassination, Herndon said a woman named Ann Rutledge was the woman Lincoln
was really in love with She took a trip to Europe to try and forget that her husband died and the fact

Susan B. Anthony s Trial
Susan B. Anthony is not on trial; the United States is on trial (Anthony 179). On November 18, 1872,
Susan Brownell Anthony, an avid women s suffragist, was arrested for illegally voting. For more than
twenty years, Anthony had dedicated her life, tirelessly giving speeches and petitioning Congress in
order to gain women across the nation the right to vote. Before voting, Miss Anthony had ensured that
she was a registered voter, as well as the other fourteen women who accompanied her to the polls. As
required by law, Anthony was asked several questions to assure she met the qualifications to vote.
However, several days after casting her vote, a police officer arrived at her front door. After her arrest,
the news of Anthony s trial began making headlines throughout the United States. Eventually, Miss
Anthony was found to be guilty of illegally voting. Nevertheless, through the close examination of
several primary sources, bias and a distinct lack of fairness are revealed in United States v. Susan B.
Anthony. There are several sources composed after Susan B. Anthony s hearing that allow a
conclusion to be drawn that Miss Anthony did not receive a fair trial. Some prime examples of this
claim are numerous handwritten letters and diary entries, a newspaper article, a court transcript, and a
petition to Congress. The first source employed throughout this essay is composed of numerous letters
and diary entries written by Anthony herself that discuss the unlawful events

  • 2. Heavy Metal Music Observation And Research People who listen to heavy metal music are often seen as a minority group in most cultures and countries, but is it possible that heavy metal music listeners have a distinct culture of their own that transcends the dividing lines of nations? This paper is intended to research and report the similarities between heavy metal listeners across the world. In order to do that I will be splitting the world up into four major categories for observation and research: 1. The United States 2. English speaking Europe (Ireland, Great Britain) 3. Non English speaking Europe (Finland, Switzerland, France, Italy, Russia, etc.) 4. Asia (India, Japan, China, Korea, Vietnam, etc.) I do realize that this leaves out some key areas like The Middle East, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In most non English speaking European nations tobacco use is almost considered a national pastime. In countries like France and Italy smokers are a majority of the population in general, so the metal fans do not really stand apart from the cultural norm. In Asian countries smoking is more socially acceptable than in English speaking countries, but there is a slightly higher rate of smokers who are metal fans over smokers in the general population. The surveys that have been done in Asian countries point to a higher rate of hero worship and idolization; being that many heavy metal musicians smoke and are heroes to their fans this hypothesis makes a lot of sense. Most cultures also have a manner of dress that is recognizable (although this is becoming rare due to the current globalization trend... with the 4 different cultural groups that this paper is focusing on the fashion trends are almost identical). Most heavy metal listeners tend to wear darker clothes (usually blacks and reds), but due to the culture stressing individuality and truth, the actual manner of dress can vary quite a bit from metalhead to metalhead. At a concert (no matter which cultural area it s in) the most common attire for a fan is a black band t shirt or hooded sweatshirt and jeans. Heavy metal fans also tend to have more piercings and tattoos then non metal fans (many long time fans will actually incorporate bands ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Never Let Me Go Visual Art Kazuo Ishiguru s Never Let Me Go a novel narrated by a young woman, Kathy, who tells stories about herself and her two close friends, Ruth and Tommy, as they grow up. The trio face many typical trials and tribulations that are typically associated with coming of age. However, these children are anything but typical. Set in a dystopian world in England in the seventies and eighties, Kathy, Ruth and Tommy are all clones, whose purpose in life is to donate their organs for the sake of medicine. They all attend a special boarding school, Hailsham, that is run by regular humans for clone children. At Hailsham, creativity is highly valued, and the children are instructed in creating art, such as paintings and poetry. Madame collects the best of their artwork ... Miss Emily and Madame might choose this particular method of proof because visual art is usually considered proof of creativity, a fundamentally human quality. Greater awareness of CRPS will help people who get misdiagnosed or not diagnosed soon enough to go into recovery before symptoms become permanent. Learning what CRPS is will help people learn to live with it while doctors learn how to treat it. In order to help spread awareness about CRPS first people need to know what it is. It was first described by a doctor treating soldiers with cannonball injuries in the Civil War, the syndrome has gone by many names over the past 150 years: Causalgia in soldiers, reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome in civilians, and today CRPS (Lynn Everly). There are many different ways to treat CRPS but none of the them work for all patients. All known treatments do not completely get rid of the pain the treatments simply lessen the pain. Since there is not a treatment that works for everyone or that eliminates all of the pain CRPS is considered an incurable disease. Common medications used for CRPS are steroids, blood pressure medication, antidepressants, corticosteroids, seizure medication, or opioids. Physical and occupational therapy are used to keep strength and mobility in the affected limb(s). It is important to keep the affected limb(s) moving because CRPS thrives on immobility. The best thing that a person can do for CRPS is to use the affected area as much as possible. Counseling is used help combat the emotional effects of CRPS. Spinal cord stimulation is a typical treatment. This happens by doctors surgically implanting electrodes near the spinal cord to stop the chronic pain signals from reaching the brain. Topical anesthetic creams are made to put on the skin of the infected area so that the treatment absorbs into the skin where it is needed. Surgical sympathectomy is used as well but there is much controversy over this procedure where doctors surgically destroy some of the nerves in the affected area. • 5. Reflection About Reading You have to read 10 hours this week said my first grade teacher. In elementary school reading logs were what all the teachers made us do. Every week I had to read a certain amount of hours. I however, never read the amount of hours I was supposed too. I would just fill out the log and tell my mom to sign it. At that time it sounded like a good idea but then came freshman year. Mrs. Daugherty changed my whole perspective on reading and how important it is to read. In elementary school reading never came easy too me. My mom would always say The more you read, the better you ll be. but I never listened to her. Books were just not interesting to me. We would have book fairs in our school library and I would always ask my grandma to come and buy me a bunch of books, but in reality I never even read the books that she bought me. I would wonder around the library looking for the perfect book then once I thought I found one, I would read one chapter then be done with it. Most of the time the books would just sit in my room until I got a letter from the librarian saying that the book was past due. Then when I went to return a book, the librarian would always ask How did you like the book? and I would reply It was great I really enjoyed it! , even though I had never even finished the book. In Mrs. Daugherty s freshman college prep English class reading was what the majority of the class consisted of. We were always reading passages and would have to answer questions about ... They were talking about a graphic novel that won the Pulitzer. That peaked my interest, so I decided to research the topic of the book. When I discovered that it was an autobiography about a complex relationship between a father and son, I firmly wanted to read it. The son learning of his father s story of the holocaust was his way of to understand himself and his heritage and the journey is fascinating. When this assignment for generalist practice two came up, I jumped at the opportunity. Maus is a graphic novel. A graphic novel is predominantly told with pictures over words. This novel in particular relies on a strong and realistic artwork to tell its story along with the imagery of mice. The novel was released in two parts, the book format is the two parts put together. It is divided into five chapters, and has 296 pages. The first part was published in 1973 and was completed with the second portion in 1991 to create the final complete book. This was clearly a labor of love and a tribute to his father. There are a multitude of issues in Maus. Loss of loved ones, couple s troubles, competition of dead loved ones, are just to name a few. This treatment will be focused on repairing the father and son relationship. Strained since childhood, their relationship has gotten progressively worse since the death of Art s mother. This passage appears to be what is going through General Sash s head right before he dies. The passage begins by saying The speaker was through with that war and had gone onto the next one and now he was approaching another . Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This I first thought may have had some racial implications, but we later see it is a reference to death. The fact that he has seen the processional before shows that he has been near death before. The next part of the section discusses a long finger of music in the General s head, probing various spots . The music that he is hearing is going into his head and triggering select memories from his past. The depiction of this probing as a long finger is very invasive and shows how deep these memories run. Next a series of black things come toward the General and images of the procession start to break up. There are images of the Civil war like the musket fire as he feels himself moving backwards. The images then become very violent with sharp stabs of pain and his body riddled in a hundred places . I imagine this is when he is dying. This is followed by images of the General s family. At previous moments in the story, we are told the General cannot remember his family that has passed on, it is only at moments before his death that he remembers them. He remembers very specific things about them like his wife s narrow face and gold rimmed glasses and his bald headed sons. Here the General says that the black processional was almost on him . It is here we see the processional is clearly a reference to death taking him away. When he died he said his hand ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Analysis Of Sonnet By William Shakespeare Sonnet to science is a Lyric poem that gets ones attention from the first word. This Sonnet has high diction that through out the poem makes the readers aware of a serious concern the poet is trying to express. The title Sonnet to Science , can instantly bring to mind that the poem praise to science, however as the poem goes on, readers will realize is the exact opposite. The poem was written in the year 1829 right in the middle of the industrial revolution going on in Europe, a revolution that would affect every aspect of how things were done, and eventually translate to the United States. Basically many duties and tasks that were agrarian and rural became more industrial and urban. This could be the reason why Poe is starting to feel overwhelm by the changes science is doing in Society. The poem is being narrated by a poet that is worried and concerned about the danger of science and all the pleasures that science is ripping away from artists. With the emphatic use of literary devices such as metaphors allusions and high diction, it is seen that the poet sees Science as an enemy and the cause of destruction of a poet s fantasies and peaceful summer dream beneath the tamarind tree. Sonnet to Science , is a classic English or Shakespearean Sonnet of Iambic Pentameter divided into 3 quatrains and 1 couplet. It follows an ABAB CDCD EFEF GG rhyme scheme making it easy to catch the rhymes for the readers. The first quatrain sets up the theme. It tells the readers that the ... After much feedback, there was an indication that many public and not for profit (NFP) business entities share similar concerns of cost and complexity on the annual goodwill impairment test. As a result, the Board added this project to its agenda. The objective of this project is to reduce the cost and complexity of the subsequent accounting for goodwill for public business entities and NFP entities. This project will determine if certain intangible assets, such as customer relationships and non compete agreements, should be included in goodwill. Research will be done to identify the most appropriate useful life of goodwill if it were to be amortized and on simplifying the impairment test (Hillenmeyer McMillen, 2013). Third, religion is hypocritical. Although it might profess valuable principles, it sides with the oppressors. Jesus advocated helping the poor, but the Christian church merged with the oppressive Roman state, taking part in the enslavement of people for centuries. In the Middle Ages the Catholic Church preached about heaven, but acquired as much property and power as possible. Martin Luther preached the ability of each individual to interpret the Bible, but sided with aristocratic rulers and against peasants who fought against economic and social oppression. According to Marx, this new form of Christianity, Protestantism, was a production of new economic forces as early capitalism developed. New economic realities required a new religious superstructure by which it could be justified and defended. In addition to critiquing religion, Karl Marx wrote about the basic ideologies and principles on socialism and communism. In fact, it became so popular that it ended up gaining more YouTube views than the video of Obama s 2008 election speech within the first 24 hours of their postings. Additionally, since the release of the commercial, there has been a 300% increase in traffic to the Old Spice website, and Old Spice now has the most viewed sponsored YouTube channel. About the Commercial, since it s a means of propaganda, there is a high amount of sensationalism in the text. For example, the gradual transition from the ordinary (a man stepping out of the shower), to the bizarre (a shirtless man riding a horse on a beach), helps emphasize the fact that everything is possible with Old Spice. • 17. James C Collins Clock Building, Not Time Telling This paper will explore the concept of Clock Building, Not Time Telling, as presented by James C. Collins and Jerry I. Porras in their book, Built To Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies. The goal is to identify the underlying reason and rational behind architects of visionary companies and how they left their mark for generations to come through something larger than a single act or product. Through compelling facts and research about companies, a change in thought has occurred. For the enterprises and start ups of tomorrow, leaders must strive to be clock builders. By becoming these grand architects, the leader s greatest creation, the company itself and what it stands for, (Collins and Porras 23) must stand above and beyond anything else. This is the crucial claim discovered by Collins and Porras by investigating key factors. Through exploring two entrenched business myths, they revealed that visionary companies were built upon something greater and grander than originally thought. They began to evaluate various companies roots and leadership, finding astonishing correlations that change the landscape and mindset of company development. Simply being able to tell the time will not cut it in the business world; one must build a clock from the ground up to truly succeed. To develop an understanding of Clock Building, Not Time Telling, we will first explore the two myths of the business world that are engrained in the minds of individuals thought to achieve ... Apothecary in the colonial era was a druggist who had a similar roles to what a doctor does today. They didn t just provide medical treatment, or prescribe drugs but also performed surgeries as well. Reading more about this trade, I discovered that some apothecaries even trained to become man midwives. Before reading this article, I had the assumption that the majority of mid wives were female, and that most men didn t handle child birth in that time era. Furthermore, some of the ingredients used in colonial remedies, that is still found in modern medicine. In the midst of this diversity, Addams saw the profoundly interdependent nature of all social and political interaction, and she aligned her efforts to support, emphasize and increase this interdependence. Education was one of the ways she relied on to overcome class disparity, as well as to increase interaction between classes. In the same tone, she believed that the working class and capitalists were not warring classes, but part of the same democratic society. The character of American unions was predicted by Addams to be limited and disappointing. She supported the workers goals of a shorter workday, increased wages, better industrial and general education, and worker protection in the marketplace, but qualified her support when she wrote that the movement does not want to lose sight of the end in securing the means, nor assume success, nor even necessarily the beginnings of success, when these first aim are attained (Addams 62). Addams saw the definition of society as warring classes as one that damned society as a whole. The literal notion of brotherhood demanded a beginning of universal kinship: before this larger vision of life there can be no perception of sides and battle array (Addams 64). Labor unions became, in fact, the tools of capitalists by reducing their talks to single industry issues. Addams clearly did not support the Marxist vision of labor, although she frequently read writers adopting this perspective. • 40. Migration, Remittances, Inequality and Poverty the... Abstract Migration, Remittances, Poverty and Inequality The Philippines By Ernesto M. Pernia The paper looks into the effects of international migration and remittances on household incomes and well being, poverty reduction, human capital investment, saving, and regional development in the home country. Remittances appear to raise average incomes for all income groups but more so for the richer households than for the poorer ones, a finding that is consistent with that in several Latin American countries. Such eyeballing of the data is supported by econometric analysis which further reveals that remittances enhance household savings, spending on education and health care, and help the poor move out of poverty. Analysis at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because international migrants typically are among the better educated and experienced workers in the home country, their departure often results in a disruption of economic activity before the vacancies are filled. And even when these are filled, the situation may not be the same as before. Labor market responses would depend on the composition of emigration and the nature of labor markets in terms of flexibility, segmentation, and rates of un and under employment. Lucas (2005) reports two general types of outcomes: (i) where emigrant workers are easily replaced with no discernible loss in output or rise in wages (e.g., India, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka); and (ii) where upward pressure on wages is palpable (e.g., Pakistan, Philippines, Mexico, Malawi, and Mozambique).1 In both cases, the labor market outcome appears to be beneficial to those left behind. 1 Tan (2007), however, finds no significant upward pressure on real wages in the Philippines and opines that, perhaps, employers decide to hire less qualified replacement workers at prevailing wages instead of raising them to attract or retain highly skilled personnel. 2 For example, while infant mortality rate had dropped to 29 per thousand in 2001, it is higher than in Malaysia and Thailand; moreover, as much as 40% of women deliver babies without an attending physician, nurse or ... • 43. Abuse and Heredity Abuse and Heredity Research question: Is child abuse hereditary? There are many types of abuse such as alcohol abuse, drug abuse, domestic abuse just to name a few but of all the types of abuse there is one type of abuse that is probably one of the easiest to pass down and that is child abuse. Child abuse is easy to pass down because we look to what we know when were not certain what to do. The term for passing down child abuse is known as intergenerational abuse. There are four methods of child abuse and they are physical, sexual, neglect, and emotional abuse (Baltes, Smelser, Pg 1672). In the study of a sixteen year old mother who had been abused her whole life, it was found that the mother resorted to spanking her five month old ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Capaldi and Pears studies show that abuse is found in low socioeconomical environments and also with relatively young parents (2001, pg 1442). Bensley says one process of intergenerational abuse is the normative beliefs regarding appropriate parenting behaviors, which she describes as believing that certain abusive behavior are normal ( Bensley, Ruggles, Simmons, Harris, Williams, Putvin, Allen, 2003, pg 1323). Which supports the idea that an abusive parent justifies abuse as a legitimate punishment ( Bensley, Ruggles, Simmons, Harris, Williams, Putvin, Allen, 2003, pg 1331). Graur identifies 3 different cause of child abuse and neglect, the first cause is called the economic theory which says economic depression or socioemotional difficulties cause rejection behaviors on the part of the parent (1996, p.55 56). The second cause is called the ecological theory which says any disorder affecting society will also affect the family (1996, p. 56). The third and final cause of neglect found by Graur is called the personality theory which states that traits such as low self esteem, sadness, and previous experiences affect the way a parent acts towards a child (1996, p.56). In the article titled Child abuse there are 4 main cause of child abuse identified, the first has to do with life history and personality meaning their own experiences as a ... Therefore, the U.S. District Court sees numerous cases. This court hears criminal and civil cases per the trial courts where attorneys are able to examine and cross examine witness before a jury of their peers. All federal cases go before the U.S. District Courts including criminal cases, civil cases, bankruptcy cases, etc. The second tier of the American federal court system is the U.S. Court of Appeals. • 47. Causes Of Colonialism In Canada When looking at Canada as a whole, we often tend to overlook the past events of Indigenous groups who have suffered through Colonialism. As I read about this issue, I felt sympathy for the Indigenous peoples, as it was overwhelming for me to find out that this much discrimination has occurred in a nation as diverse and developed as Canada. Reading more about colonization helped me to make connections between the issues and topics I have learned about in class, and how they can be traced back to European contact with the Indigenous peoples. The Colonial powers in Canada rested in the hands of the British and the French, who declared sovereignty over the territories which rightfully belonged to the Indigenous peoples (Cochrane et al. 70). The worst effect of colonialism is the exploitation, domination, and subjugation of the people by the imperial power (Cochrane et al. 71). Due to the fact that their rights were determined solely by the white society s rules, one of the only governance options left for Indigenous peoples was to become independent of the Canadian state (Cochrane et al. 87). The Royal Proclamation Act of 1763 guaranteed the protection of lands for Indians under the Crown, and required any colonists occupying Indian lands without the permission of the crown to evacuate; however, these rights to Indians have been much ignored (Cochrane et al. 70). During post confederation, several treaties numbered 1 11 were created to allow aboriginals to claim land titles, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In I hear a Fly buzz when I died , there are several ways to interpret death due to it ambiguous definition in literature. For instance, death can be seen more as a disappointment than something to look forward to. One might suggest that death can help end all the struggles and stresses one face, however, that s not the case in Dickinson s poem. As the speaker points out, The Eyes around had wrung them dry and I willed my Keepsakes Signed away . In this case, the speaker s relatives surround the speaker s death bed sobbing, and the speaker s belongs were Signed away . Also, it is often associated that after one s death, he or she will head to the light at the end of the tunnel and be greeted by an angel. Instead, the speaker Could not see to see , signifying that there are nothing at the end of the tunnel except for utter darkness. Overall, Dickinson is questioning the validity of whether death is something to look forward to the existence of afterworld. Another way to depict death from this poem is its inevitability and loneliness. While reading through the poem, it does not sound very hopeful, just like someone waiting patiently for his or her death to come. This illustrates that everyone s fate is death at the end, and it is a long and lonely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Even during the war, where her family was confederates and they were dying, both Abraham and Mary knew that they were doing the right thing in preserving the Union. After Abraham Lincoln died, she blamed herself and became mental unstable and eventually died. Her whole life was full of both love and despair. On November 18, 1872, Susan Brownell Anthony, an avid women s suffragist, was arrested for illegally voting. For more than twenty years, Anthony had dedicated her life, tirelessly giving speeches and petitioning Congress in order to gain women across the nation the right to vote. Before voting, Miss Anthony had ensured that she was a registered voter, as well as the other fourteen women who accompanied her to the polls. As required by law, Anthony was asked several questions to assure she met the qualifications to vote. However, several days after casting her vote, a police officer arrived at her front door. After her arrest, the news of Anthony s trial began making headlines throughout the United States. Eventually, Miss Anthony was found to be guilty of illegally voting. Nevertheless, through the close examination of several primary sources, bias and a distinct lack of fairness are revealed in United States v. Susan B. Anthony. There are several sources composed after Susan B. Anthony s hearing that allow a conclusion to be drawn that Miss Anthony did not receive a fair trial. Some prime examples of this claim are numerous handwritten letters and diary entries, a newspaper article, a court transcript, and a petition to Congress. The first source employed throughout this essay is composed of numerous letters and diary entries written by Anthony herself that discuss the unlawful events ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
