This is a Journal club presentation held at the Dept. of Anatomy, BSMMU. This article described our view to see the plastinated human body. This review was made upon the exhibition of Von Hagen named "Body world". A brief history of journal club is also added to this presentation.
2. Sir James Paget
St. Bartholomew's Hospital
Describes a group of people as a kind
of club in a small room over a baker's
shop near the Hospital-gate. where
they could sit and read the journals
Sir William Osler
Established the
first formalized
journal club
McGill University
Tinsley Harrison
Hosted a journal club at his house
twice a month where one member of
the group would present a research
paper and the others would criticize it

5. Causes of topic selection
• It is an issue that is going to be launched
in Bangladesh
• Among the audience someone is involved
in thesis & some group have practical
classes on this topic
• I was attracted by the term ‘Anatomy Art’
which is the main issue of this article
7. Study design
• ‘Anatomy Art’ & it’s confliction on public sentiment
• What is plastinated specimen
• Finding a context for plastination
• Plastination as entertainment
• Educational issues of plastination
• Conclusion
8. Results
‘Anatomy Art’ is
unacceptable ethically if
• it accounts little more for
entertainment
• it exploits human beings
• the donation lacks truly
informed consent
It may be consider
acceptable if
• it is of educational
value or can be
used to answer
research questions
• the donations are
based on adequate
informed consent
12. Critical appraisal
The study is effective as the anatomists are
dealing with the human body. Human
anatomists dare not isolate themselves from
the society in which they are located; they
are heavily dependent upon public sentiment
that condones and supports their activities
Plastination has opened up avenues for the
research scientists and for the educational
display of human anatomy not possible
before it’s development
13. Summary
Cadavers are separated from the world of the
living by their presentation and preservation.
But instead of being hidden from public view in
dissecting rooms and museums, cadavers are
put on general display through the exhibition as
‘Anatomy Art’. But insertion of the adjective
‘Anatomy’ before Art is misleading.
14. Summery (cont…)
Because it has not dispelled the feeling that
the plastinated displays is serving as an
educational and scientific one rather than
artistic functions. So plastintion presents a
new world filled with scientific excitement but
ethical challenges. And in doing this it brings
the anatomy to the center stage once again.
