RESEARCH ESSAY ON HARD TIMES
English 2319
April 4, 2001
Hard Times was originally written as a weekly serial in a journal called Household Words. It was
written in 1854 to depict what life was like during the industrial revolution and reflect the distinctions
between the classes during that era. The novel centres around a theme of a convincing criticism of
utilitarianism, and every character in the novel plays a role of reinforcing this theme. Utilitarianism
doctrine reflects that the greatest happiness of the greatest number of people, should be the aim of all
social and political institutions so it is ok for the working people to suffer, as long as the economy as a
whole benefits. The novel uses its characters to expose the huge ... Show more content on

His characters are overly exaggerated to enable him to portray the theme of the novel.
The characters in Hard Times are not void of humanistic qualities but they come across as shallow.
The reader only gets to uncover the first layer of their personality. Gissing reflects Dickens style when
he says I believe him to have been, what he always claimed to be, a very accurate painter of the
human beings... (Gissing). Gissing refers to Dickens as a painter of human beings, which is a very two
dimensional metaphor. Dickens characters are like a painting rather flat and straightforward. Most of
his characters are not very complex and personify either good or evil. For example Gradgrind s
character reflected a rationalistic and self serving philosophy on life and we did not see any change in
this until toward the end of the story when he gave up his philosophy on fact and became politically
active in helping the poor.
Dickens portrays characters in a particular way, he has a very narrow view of society and he places
emphasis on class distinctions. He has not a wide scope; he is always noticeably at his best in dealing
with an ill defined order of English folk, a class (or classes) characterized by dullness, prejudice,
dogged individuality, and manners, to say the least, unengaging. (Gissing). Gissing thinks that even
though we may remember the character s names, that is all that they are to us. They have no depth and
the characters do not leave a lasting

King Leopold Imperialism Analysis
During the nineteenth century European drive for possessions in Africa... people justified colonialism
in various ways, claiming that it Christianized the heathen or civilized the savage races or brought
everyone the miraculous benefits of free trade. (Hochschild 38)Many people played a major role in
colonizing the Congo. Many people tried to end the mass murder in the Congo. Even though most of
these people were not able to stop it completely, they were a great input to stopping and putting an end
to Leopold s brutality. King Leopold was one of the sneakiest European leaders. His ambitions to
increase his country s power lead him to hunt for a colony. Leopold was able to manipulate his people,

a way to attract other people s capital to his investment schemes while he retained half the proceeds.
(Hochschild 117). Most women and children were raped and sometimes treated and hunted like
animals for entertainment purposes. Most of the Congolese slaves were tortured and whip by chicotte.

Janet Trauma Case Study
1. What is the precipitating stressor event that probably triggered the onset of Janet s schizophrenic
episode? What other factors may have contributed? The precipitating stressor of Janet s schizophrenic
episode is more than likely the change of environment and the overwhelming change in customs. To
elaborate, Janet was very sheltered at home. Her parents built a false sense of security around her by
tolerating strange behaviors and allowing for them to become a part of her everyday routine rather
than continuing to seek alternative options in order for her to function. Moreover, a college student
without any history of mental illness or behavior issues tends to struggle with adjusting to the
demands and new surroundings of school. The classes, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

instance, there is no explanation for this. One would wonder if she perhaps was feeling watched or
insecure that others were talking about her while she ate? Nevertheless, the delusion that Dr. M. and
herself were destined to save the world was nothing less than a reality for her. The intervention of her
parents, roommates, and hospital staff initiated the thought that they were incarnations of evil forces
intent on keeping her apart from Dr. M. Her hallucinations fit together with her delusions by, her
preoccupation with Dr. M was a desperate attempt to save herself from psychological catastrophe.

miRNA in the process of a disease such as cancer, is to assess the miRNA expression profile of cancer
patients, and to compare with their normal counterpart is a very promising approach for understanding
the involvement of a certain miRNA in a disease of interest. This may lead to the discovery of a novel
prognostic or diagnostic biomarker. Although, it is believed that miRNA profile from extracted total

On Writing Stephen King Analysis
Mini Essay 1
The nonfiction piece, On Writing, by Stephen King, that is often told in a form that mirrors many
fiction stories. In a nonfiction work of literature, the expectation is a formal writing style that works to
convey the information without leading the reader astray. However, through the use of dialogue,
imagery, and literary techniques, King manages to combine the two genres into an informative piece
that is enjoyable to read.
Throughout On Writing, King converts the typical, formal tone of nonfiction writing into one that is
enjoyable, interesting, and in many cases humorous. Oh my God, it s breathing, you realize. Maybe it
s even thinking. What in hell s name do I do next? (King 136) This passage is a metaphor that King
uses to describe the feeling of creating your first really good paragraph. By comparing that to the
feeling of Frankenstein and his monster, King brings a fiction aspect to this text that makes the text far
more enjoyable to read. Kings dialogue also creates an informal tone in On Writing. Fuhgeddaboudit!
(King 123) The beauty of this single word is the fact that it is no word at all. In order to properly
express his frustration at common writing mistakes, King puts all his emotion into the phonetics of
this word and not necessarily in the actual meaning of it.
Imagery plays a very important role in On Writing. In the nonfiction world what you normally meet
are the facts with little, if any fluff. The lid was held down by big latches; to my

Connie Is Amidst An Immature Disobedience
The fifteen year old protagonist of the story, Connie is amidst an immature disobedience. She
contends with her mom and sister, June, and dismisses family life for investigating young men at the
neighborhood eatery. She tries to seem more established and shrewder than she is, and her head is
loaded with fantasies and prevalent music that sustain her thoughts of sentiment and affection. At the
point when Arnold Friend touches base at Connie s home, she should face the cruel substances of
adulthood, which look to some extent like her dreams. Connie rejects the part of being a little girl,
sister and pleasant young lady to develop her sexual persona, which prospers just when she is far from
her home and family. She ridicules her unattractive more established sister, June, and is in consistent
clash with her family. Her worries are normally pre adult: she fixates on her looks, listens to music,
hangs out with her companions, flirts with young men, and investigates her sexuality. She enjoys the
way that younger and even older men find her appealing. Connie has developed a specific way of
dressing, walking, and laughing that make her sexually engaging, in spite of the fact that these
idiosyncrasies are just brief affectations. She acts one way in her home and a completely different way
when she is somewhere else. Everything about her had two sides to it, one for home and one for
anywhere that was not home: her walk, which could be childlike and bobbing, or languid enough to

Egon Schiele s Art
The eruptions of the Uncanny in Egon Schiele s art legacy
Introduction:
The notion of the uncanny is the key term for psychoanalysis and psychoanalytical approach for
interpretation of the art. The uncanny effect is ingrained not by unfamiliar or something frightening
but because it conveys something that has been lived through and exuded to the sphere of an
unconscious. Text that was written about literary, psychoanalytical, critical but not art purpose at all
was erupted into art discourse (Walsh 21). (Then I m not sure, should I introduce the whole concept of
the uncanny straight away in the introduction AND then introduce a short introduction about Egon
Schiele s life. ) The Austrian Expressionist painter Egon Schiele (1890 1918), whose art works have
been referred to as manifesting motifs of sexuality, insanity, and death (Knafo 138) that compels
scrutiny of personal psychic borders, primarily through repeated, merciless confrontations with [...]
identity, sexuality, and mortality (Knafo 134) that parallels the bourgeoning attention to
psychoanalysis at fin de siecle Vienna that was depicted as an isolation cell in which one is allowed to
scream (Comini 1974, 3). (Should I add more about his lifespan and to connect why I consider this
uncanny or not to be repeated this should be introduced in the main body?)

theoretical texts pertinency for literary discourse. The point of departure for the current essay is

Foreign Direct Investment happens when a resources invested by a firm outside its country. There are
a lot of barriers such as tariffs on imports of produced goods. Technological change in communication,
information processing, and transportation technologies is the second factor. There are some major
developments since the Second World War ended, such as microprocessors and telecommunications,
internet, and transportation technology (Hill, 2005).

Why Did The Creoles Lead The Fight Essay
We all have heard of Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington but, what about
Simon Bolivar, Jose De San Martin, and Agustin De Iturbide? They have had just as much as an
impact on the modern world as the famous founding fathers of The United States. From 1809 to 1824
independence revolutions raged through Latin America changing the world today with the creoles
leading the fight. Despite the racist ideas from the Creoles, they successfully lead the Latin American
Revolution because of their motivations to challenge their law, and administrative positions.
Subsequently, the creoles were growing their economic and social influence but on the other hand, the
peninsulares still held the administrative positions. Only 12 out of 99 judgeships in Latin America
were held by creoles, unlike the rest that were peninsulares. This resulted In the first thoughts of
independence from Spain for the creoles. The creoles additionally thought the peninsulares were
distressing leaders. Spain completely restricted Latin America from the rest of the world limiting the

How Cystic Fibrosis Affect The Occupation Of Rest And Sleep
Cystic fibrosis, a debilitating, genetic disease, disturbs the mucus glands of the lungs, pancreas, and
other organs. To fully comprehend the everyday impacts, envision Emily, a fourteen year old girl
struggling to adapt to high school life with cystic fibrosis. She spends over three hours a day
exclusively nebulizing and performing airway clearance therapy; this time does not include doctor s
visits or other therapists appointment (Sawicki, 2008). Due to the high treatment demand, Emily feels
stressed since she cannot find adequate time for social participation, homework, plus added teenage
milestones. Consequently, cystic fibrosis influences many of her occupations. Attitude has a major
impact on her overall progress of managing this serious, chronic medical challenge. A solid
understanding of the entire person helps create an enriched treatment plan and improved outcomes.
Starting the day, cystic fibrosis greatly influences the occupation of rest and sleep. Nasal polyps
develop inside the nose, which obstruct breathing during while lying down (Olson, 2015). In addition,
Emily develops many respiratory infections that worsen her ongoing cough; consequently, interrupting
her sleeping patterns. Many days, instead of going to school, she must go to medical appointments or
stay in hospital. The significant amount of time spent with health care professionals reduces time
spent in school performing educational tasks and developmentally appropriate behaviors with peers. In

Devil In The White City During The Gilded Age
The Gilded Age was known as a time that increased the growth of America s economy. Both, the rich
and poor accumulated wealth during this period, which started in the 1870 s and ended in the early
1900 s. Eric Larson s book, Devil in the White City, portrayed that the United States began to
experience manifest destiny, a rise in economic power, and modernity due to individualism during the
Gilded Age.
Manifest destiny expressed a utopian vision of the United States (Heinkin, 323). In the book, Daniel
Burnham s creation of the World s Fair represents manifest destiny. This fair attracted people from all
over the world. Railroads became expanded leading more people to Burnham s fair. The more people
that came into America, the more need for expansion was supported. Chicago revealed to its early
visitors a vision of what a city could and ought to be (Larson, 247). Chicago was one of the many

of economic calamity (Larson, 288). The U.S. experienced the worst panic of its time. The railroad,

the wealthy were rarely affected, while the middle class went insane, taking money out of their
accounts. Burnham and Holmes, on the other hand, were giving America a rise in economic power.
People were still coming to the fair to escape the anxiety the depression brought upon them . The
people that stayed at Holmes hotel were also trying to flee from reality all while walking into an
unexpected death trap. Though while one man is trying to run a business and the other is a

Analysis Of The Lansdowne Athlete By Lysippos
Ancient sculptures bring on endless philosophical arguments regarding what is an appropriate form of
perfection, defined as a fit body guided by a keen mind. This paper will approach a visual essence of
the sculpture of The Lansdowne Athlete, by Lysippos, Rome 340 330 B.C. marble after a bronze
original, that I viewed at the LACMA. This sculpture is located in the left wing of Greek exhibition
Building, 3rd floor. I selected this sculpture as an example of an idealized body. Therefore, I will be
explaining the historical background of the sculpture and address why I think it would make a good
addition to our text. I will provide an analogy with other sculpture of idealized body from our
textbook chapter 12 on Mind and Body mainly. I will impart more information about the essence of
idealized human form as well as cultural ideals during this time period in Greece.
The Lansdowne Athlete at the LACMA is an example of a well developed ideal body and carefully
controlled proportions to all body parts. This sculpture is a Roman copy of an original by Lysippos
made in the 1st century. It is a marble statue of 75 inches in height. The figure is in the contrapposto
stance common of the style at the time and is taking a step forward. The figure still has integrity even
though it has a few missing parts. Its face, which is important, is more or less intact and the standing
upright with its impression of movement still visible. The missing arms, if they were restored would
not add much to the sculpture and the addition of these parts will not be worth the loss of authenticity.
Visiting LACMA for many years, I never noticed that ancient art has been disbanded, I was surprised!
The Greek and Roman sculptures now stand in the galleries of European art. The ancient statues and
vases are now part of the post antique paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts of the European Art.
From my skepticism, however, I have completely converted to the curators way of thinking: the
pairing of old and new art, really works! It brings out content, form, and even artistic style that would
otherwise be lost. In the other hand, the sheer visual variety of white statues with more colorful
objects is beautiful and passionate; much more than

Post Game Analysis Paper
The overall analytic framing of this game is an inductive, phenomenological process. The approach
will be moderately structured inside the game cells, and the post game analytic methodology will
follow a widely used process referred to as triangulation which is routed in grounded theory,
descriptive statistics, and content analysis. The post event analytic triangulation process follows
current thinking in the field of social research, which suggests that analytic tools maximize the
credibility of the work in behaviorally based activities. This methodology takes advantage of multiple
data collection techniques and allows the researchers to derive the same or very similar conclusions
using different datasets or methods.
Consistent with this process, the data streams collected during the game will incorporate a variety of
research procedures into post game analysis. A brief description of each analytic process follows.

Why Was The Death Penalty Considered A Cruel And Unusual...
The Death Penalty The Death Penalty started in the eighteenth Century B.C. when it was established
into the Code of King Hammurabi in Babylon, which codified the the Death Penalty for 25 different
crimes. The Eighth Amendment states that the Death Penalty is considered a cruel and unusual
punishment, which means that the Death Penalty is unfair to the persons getting the Penalty, but is also
unconstitutional because it s a punishment that ends the lives of people. So really you are killing the
person that killed another or more, and you are just adding to the death toll. I oppose the Death

conclusion, there is just too much risk of innocent bystanders being executed for doing nothing wrong,

The Sports And Public Relations Essay
Public relations and public relations practitioners focus heavily on maintaining mutually beneficially
relationships. Through these relationships, public relations allow companies and products to gain
exposure and public acknowledgement, without the need to pay for advertising. This paper will focus
on the sports industry in Australia, specifically focusing on the illegal drug use in the Essendon
Football Club that came to the medias attention in late 2011. Due to the severity of the doping
occurring within the club, sponsorships were lost and most recently, players and staff were banned
from the game they love. The media follows the Australian Football League (AFL) with great priority
during the playing season. Without public relations, clubs would not be able to relay information such
as player injury updates, team statistics and club news to the public. Through discussing the drug
scandal within the Essendon Football Club, the way in which public relations deals with crisis within
professional sport will also be reviewed. In doing this, theories; framing and relationship management
will also be demonstrated and appropriately discussed in relation to how the above case study was
handled by the public relations team.

press covers all sports ranging from cycling to tennis to football and all of these are covered through a
variety of channels. These channels include

Attachment Theory And Attachment Theories
To begin with attachment theory, first everyone should understand what the attachment is. According
to attachment means bonding between a child and caregiver or vice versa. The attachment theory is
the theory that describes the long term interpersonal relationship between the humans. Also, it can be
defined as the strong bond between parent and child, and later in peer and romantic relationship
(Metzger, Erdman, Ng 85). It generates a specific fact that how the humans react in relationships when
they get hurt, separated from loved ones and perceiving a threat. Basically the two main types of
attachment are secure and insecure. Secure attachment is the attachments where mother and father are
available for their child and during that time child demonstrates his or her stress and reestablish the
connection (Metzger, Erdman, Ng 87). Insecure attachment is the attachment where parents are not
regularly in touch with their children or they ignore their child which built a failed emotion
communication (Metzger, Erdman, Ng 87). Also, it may be repeated from one generation to another
until it is not recovered. However, as a result of attachment theory, it is so important for children to
know about it and there are also several emotional effects on children when their parents leave to go to
another county due to their connections or bond between them. The children have to understand the
importance of attachment theory because, it may help them to solve many

The Causes And Effects Of Alien Species In Japan
Alien species have been a huge issue in Japan, and not only Japan but the whole world. Alien species

They can break ecosystem and can affect the environment. There are many alien species in Japan that

One of the alien species in Japan are the small asian mongoose. Mongoose are mammals that are

Vitamin C Scurvy
C. Scurvy
Scurvy is less likely differential diagnosis that may be associated with the signs and symptoms of this

it still occurs and can affect children who have chronic dietary vitamin C deficiency. Vitamin C is
relevant for the triple helix formation of collagen; a vitamin C deficiency results in impaired collagen
synthesis, which typically typical manifest by poor wound healing that is noted in collagen tissues and
in organs such as skin, cartilage, dentine, osteoid, and capillary blood vessels (McCance Huether,

The disorder is a syndrome that is found in newborns and children that consisted of osteoporosis with
fractures and skeletal deformities (Mccance Huether, 2014). Its classification is based on both
inheritance and clinical findings. In the most severe form of this disorder, the child is usually stillborn
or dies soon after birth, but some may survive into childhood. In its more severe forms the signs and
symptoms are evident at birth because fractures and deformity have occurred in utero. The less severe
forms may be evident until the child starts to walk. Clinical manifestations of this disease are
osteoporosis and increased rate of fractures, possible bony deformation, triangular faces, possible
vascular weakness, possible blue sclera, and poor dentition (McCance Huether, 2014). The main errors
in this disease is due to the synthesis of collagen, a triple helix that contains two matching alpha
chains and one beta chain. Collagen is mostly present in bone, cartilage, eye tissue, skin, and the
vascular system. The severity of this disorder phenotype along the related anomalies are primarily
dependent on the severity of the genetic anomaly and the part of the triple helix that is affected

Business Intelligence And Its History
1 Summary
All businesses, regardless of their size, have to deal with some form of raw data that can reveal
insightful inferences if properly processed into meaningful information. However, data processing is a
tough row to hoe for big and medium sized enterprises that are exposed to large volumes of data. So,
these enterprises turn to business analysts for help.
Business analysts engage in Business Intelligence (BI) initiatives to derive useful information out of
of raw data. One popular BI technique is data mining. This research paper overviews Business
Intelligence and its history, followed by an in depth discussion on data mining, including its functional
framework, its popular models, end users, issues and trends. The paper also ... Show more content on

In late eighties, industry expert Howard Dresner suggested Business Intelligence as a holistic concept.
According to him, business intelligence was a method that assisted in fact based decision making.
Since then, business intelligence has come a long way, evolving into a full blown field of study.
Panian, Z. (2012) identifies six stages in the evolution of business intelligence to its current state.
Business intelligence first got introduced to the business world through Data Mining . Initially, data
mining was a concept alien to the business world. But in late eighties, the business community started
to find great utility in its practice. Businesses discovered that the data mining process could be
employed to predict solutions to complex business problems.
Following the simpler data mining techniques, the more complex On Line Analytical Processing
(OLAP) techniques marked the second phase in the evolution of business intelligence. OLAP
applications helped in complicated analysis of data stored in big data warehouses. These analytical
applications broke down data into various dimensions to arrive at more factual results than data
mining.
Then came the third evolutionary stage of Balanced Scorecards (BSC) that elevated business
intelligence to another level. Moving beyond decision making, Business Scorecards helped businesses
in performance tracking. Particularly, BSCs helped the top management to analyze whether their

issues I researched was the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and how plastics in the ocean affect marine
life. Because of that, I understand the true impact that any debris, and particularly plastics, have in the
ocean. They entangle animals, hinder their digestion, and transport of invasive species, to name just

problem lies in how humanity is using plastics. However, I want to help contributions the wellbeing of

Sociology In Sociology
Social structure and social interaction are based on two levels of analysis: Macrosociology and
microsociology. Macrosociology, like its name describes, is focused on the broad view of society and
how it studies society s behavior. Theorists can analyze and distinguish the different social classes and
groups in society. Microsociology is focused on social interaction, how people react and what they do
when they are together. Theorists can examine people s behaviors and how they communicate to one
another. Both can be used to understand society and society s social life. Macrosociology. In Belize,
teachers and lectures tend to be more comfortable around their students. In the United States, students
will probably not encounter their professors out late at night in a club. In Belize, however, it not

A wall of fire is rising and in the ashes, I see the bones of my people. Not only those people whose
dark hollow faces I see daily in the fields, but all those souls who have gone ahead to haunt my

The speech reveals the symbolic meaning of the title and its symbolic attachment to Haitian
revolutionary history as a picture of rising fire is painted when Boukman s powerful words come out
of Little Guy s mouth. The theme of entrapment is starting to be revealed from the speech. The lives
lost in the revolution, those that did not get to see freedom, resonate through the paper and becomes a

Furthermore, The image of a rising wall of fire, conveyed by the story s title, historically refers to the

ceremony was a meeting led by Dutty Boukman in which slaves met in order to revolt againt the white

Anne Moody s Coming Of Age Essay
HIST278 Essay One Joseph Malthus, 42863655
Anne Moody s Coming of Age in Mississippi is a story of a black girl growing up in the American
Deep South during the development of the Civil Rights Movement. Moody notices the racism that
envelops her life and attempts to understand why it exists, despite the absence of reasonable
grounding. Suffocating under the restrictions and fear caused by systematic racism, she ultimately
decides to become an activist, and takes an active role in demanding equality and a better life for
Black Americans.
Moody s childhood was riddled with incidents where white people imposed their superiority and
control over her and other blacks. She sought to understand why American society was structured this
way. Moody first begins thinking about this after she is forced away from her friends in a segregated
cinema. While her friends were allowed to sit in the main atrium to watch the film, Moody and her
family were forced to use a separate entrance and sit behind them on a balcony. Moody noticed that
her friends whiteness meant they were treated better, but at her age she could not understand why their
skin tone made them better than her: why their whiteness provided them with a pass to downstairs in
that nice section and [her] blackness sent [her] to the balcony .1 She became determined to discover
what made whites more deserving of better homes and schools compared to those which blacks were

While incredibly common, there is little doubt regarding the evidential nature of specified human
groups containing this DNA. Neanderthals could not have contributed to modern African peoples
genomes because Neanderthals evolved and lived exclusively in Eurasia and therefore could not have
bred with the humans living in Africa at that time (Smithsonian Institution). There is a clear difference
in that exclusively humans of Eurasian descent have appeared to actually have Neanderthal DNA, in
comparison to modern African peoples . Along with this, we know that these encounters may have
occurred as modern humans moved into Europe. Humans may have even lived alongside Neanderthals
for thousands of years, allowing for centuries of genetic exchange (Smithsonian Institution). Therein
lies part of the controversy, as some make uneducated points as to differentiate Neanderthal DNA as
part of a racial difference between those of Eurasian and African descent. Yet there is no current
evidence to suggest Neanderthal DNA has any dictation on race alone. Although data shows this to be

American Symbolism In Hills Like White Elephants
Title In Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway, an American man exhibits control over his
lover, Jig, as they talk at a train station. Stereotypical with the role of women, Jig lacks authority and
control, not only in her relationship with the American, but in her day to day life, as shown in her
inability to act independently. The American s conversational coercion instills Jig with a false sense of
autonomy in the relationship, ultimately pigeonholing her into submission. Almost immediately, Jig is
established not as an equal, but rather as the American s subordinate. While her partner is referred to
as the American, and the waitress is referred to as the woman, Jig is only known as the girl throughout
most of the story. This description demonstrates the man s control over Jig, distinguishing him as
superior to his lover (Rankin). Jig s inferiority is further shown through her lack of independent
identity, as she is instead characterized as an extension of her lover. This is displayed in her inability to
even choose a drink for herself, relying on the American to decide for her What should we drink? the
girl asked (1,Hemingway), and even speak for her. This action strips Jig of independence and control,
in fact, her dependence on the American causes her to constantly seek for his approval: she changes

Measuring Chirality At Ibuprofen Using A Homemade Polarimeter
Measuring Chirality in Ibuprofen Using a Homemade Polarimeter
Sydney Guerin
December 9, 2016
May River High School
Abstract
For this project, I will be conducting multiple experiments regarding the chirality of different forms of
ibuprofen. The question I m trying to solve is whether or not common brands of ibuprofen have the
same formulation. In order to perform this exercise, I will need to create a homemade polarimeter in
order to measure the angle at which the brands of ibuprofen will reflect light, resulting in finding out if
the chosen brands have a varied rotation of light. I believe that the different brands will reflect at
different angles based off of its chirality. After performing the tests, the results I have gathered led me
to believe that my hypothesis was proven to be wrong. The Motrin, Advil, and Equate seemed to all
get bright in the same areas. The only difference was that the Motrin was the brightest one out of them
all.

Laboratory 7: Environmental Effects on Enzyme Activity
BI 185 03
BY
Charlie Kane
10/24/17
Abstract
During this experiment we tested the effects that specific environmental conditions have on the
enzyme, peroxidase. Through this experiment we developed an understanding of enzymes and their
functions. By exposing the enzymes to different environments, we observed a changed in their
activity. In order for us to measure these changes we used the technique of spectrophotometry,
meaning we used a spectrophotometer, which measures the amount of light a chemical can absorb. In
our findings we discovered that certain environmental factors such as pH, temperature, boiling do
have an affect on enzyme activity. In conclusion the five null hypothesis were proven to be incorrect.
Introduction
Enzymes are biological catalysts that carry thousands of chemical reactions that occur in living cells.
They could be found in every living thing. Enzymes increase the rate at which chemical reactions
occur. A catalyst speeds up a chemical reaction by lowering the activation energy required. They are
proteins made up of several amino acids. Each enzyme is different due to its structure, it all has
different amino acid sequence. An enzymes ability to function depends on it s environment. These
factors include temperature, denaturation, pH, the size , the shape, and the amount of enzymes present.
Enzymes performs best at ph7. That is the same pH as blood , the more enzymes stray away from pH7
the weaker it becomes , the active site gets damaged. This makes the enzyme not active, no longer
functional. When it comes to temperature enzymes at a certain temperature have maximum activity.
As temperature increases the enzyme activity also increases. When enzymes reach their maximum
activity level and the temperature is still increasing it will start to decline (denaturation). The rate of
reaction also depends on how much enzymes are present. We tested 5 hypothesis which were the
amount of enzyme does not alter the rate of a reaction. pH does not influence the rate of an enzyme
reaction. Temperature does not influence the rate of an enzyme activity. Boiling an enzyme before a
reaction does not influence enzyme activity. The

The state also ensures the promotion of organic farming in the state by strengthening State Organic
Certification agency and establishing Organic Farming Research and Development Institute in the
state, National Organic Farming University, Community base Organic Growers, traders and

up of Quality Control Laboratories in the state but the government needs to intervene with the private
players in order to channelize the quality assurance, packaging and pricing delivery mechanism
through some quasi legal and statutory provisions.
The Policy advocates of organic farming in Public Private Community Partnership to make the policy
mission a successful one. The Ministry of Agriculture of the state and

The Emotional And Criticism Of Romanticism By William...
Introduction Amongst the dogmatic religious past, which when confronted by the enlightened present
became more rigid in its practice and conformity, and enduringly factual and empirical science lived a
man called William Wordsworth, so sentimental and philosophic that even greater minds couldn t
solve completely the cipher that his word created, or rather couldn t completely understand the legacy
that he left for the modern era. Even when heard or looked upon different meaning and various
analogies appear into the mind of people to which it soothes. And this allegory of expression was there
in his poem, with coloring with shades of Indian philosophies and taste of scented breeze collecting
and distributing the knowledge of life and death. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wordsworth, like other Romantic Poets, with his overwhelming mind observed life with greater
suction and fundamentality; his partaking in the working of life was keen and so minute that when he
did finally caught up with the philosophy of life his poems became more and more sublime and
transcendental in feelings. In his Preface to the Lyrical Ballads republished in 1800 described a Poet
and his working which in a way popularized self expression connecting an object of little importance
to the infinite vision of the Creator. His grew as a poet gradually with

Descriptive Essay On Baptism
The baptism As the sun glistens through the long dark shredded curtains covering a big old dirty
window. It creeps across the messiness of wrinkled sheets, and lands on your smooth, freckled skin. It
gives you a warm and bubbly feeling. Your eyes flutter open slowly as you yawn and stretch your
aching long body from the glorious sleep you just had awoken from. You crawl out of bed as slow as a
sloth to soon go through the jungle of cloths you have. Deeper and deeper you go into the jungle to
search for that perfect baggy shirt. You put on your skinny jeans one leg at a time just like any other
human being, holes on each knee because you know you aren t the steadiest person. You rush to put on
your old and tattered shoes. They used to have crisp white laces but they have now turned a soft grey
from the drive way you walk up and down everyday. The sides all torn up from pulling in them trying
to it your fat in them. You do the daily routine that everyone does going through the list in your head
like brushing your teeth and hair to putting on deodorant and perfume. You grab your bible and your
cracked cup as you rush into the cold crisp air you are greeted with from the outdoors. Packed into a
car like sardines with your siblings and off you go on the weekly adventure to the church.your ride
there is silent and seems to last a lifetime but once you finally reach your destination, it s off like a

When the Canal was built towns all along the route from Buffalo to Albany prospered from the
revenue and the attraction the Canal brought with it. Whether the Canal was being used for business
people, immigrants, settlers of the region, or tourists, the border towns all had some appeal to these
persons. After some time the state was continually asked to expand the Canal from the original route
to include connecting canal routes. However, the same towns along the route from Buffalo to Albany
had already been established along the lines of the original canal. These towns would need to be
relocated in order to obey these new requests. This presented a major problem because the people in
these towns had formed a life around the Canal and many of them made their income based of the
Canal. The inhabitants of the towns changed their mentality from not wanting the Canal to invade on
their lives, to it being an essential part of their lives they depended upon. The Erie Canal provided an
extremely fast source of transportation compared to other ones of that time. A lot of the land that the
Canal went through was uninhabited and therefore people weren t able to move through these areas.
Once the Canal was built it served as that pathway through these areas. The Canal also was a much
cheaper source of transportation that was used by residents, tourists, emigrants, and workers during
this time. Evangelical preachers used the artificial

The Six Chief Characteristics Of Philosophy
The main goal behind philosophy is to seek the deepest, and most detailed truth behind everything in
the universe. Many different concepts such as relativism attempt to disprove truth that philosophy
attempts to pursue. To understand what it means for philosophy to pursue truth, we must first
understand the nature of philosophy, or what philosophy really is. To understand the nature of
philosophy, we must look at the six chief characteristics of philosophy. The six chief characteristics of
philosophy will help us understand why other concepts such as relativism are wrong, and why
philosophy does indeed pursue the deepest truth. The nature of philosophy is defined as the essence of
philosophy, or what philosophy really is. First we must look at the six chief characteristics of
philosophy to understand the nature of philosophy. The first chief characteristic is doing an
Etymological analysis of the term philosophy. This simply means that we must analyze the word to get
its root parts. If we divide philosophy it comes out to mean love of wisdom, and a philosopher is a
lover of wisdom or truth. Philosophy can be seen as the desire to know deeply the world that is around
us. The next chief characteristic is the basic mood of philosophy. The basic mood of philosophy is
wonder or anxiety in a world we cannot understand to the fullest. This brings us to our next chief
characteristic which is raising fundamental questions. These deep philosophical questions, are raised
in order to

  • 2. Resarch essay on the classic novel by Charles Dickens,... RESEARCH ESSAY ON HARD TIMES English 2319 April 4, 2001 Hard Times was originally written as a weekly serial in a journal called Household Words. It was written in 1854 to depict what life was like during the industrial revolution and reflect the distinctions between the classes during that era. The novel centres around a theme of a convincing criticism of utilitarianism, and every character in the novel plays a role of reinforcing this theme. Utilitarianism doctrine reflects that the greatest happiness of the greatest number of people, should be the aim of all social and political institutions so it is ok for the working people to suffer, as long as the economy as a whole benefits. The novel uses its characters to expose the huge ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His characters are overly exaggerated to enable him to portray the theme of the novel. The characters in Hard Times are not void of humanistic qualities but they come across as shallow. The reader only gets to uncover the first layer of their personality. Gissing reflects Dickens style when he says I believe him to have been, what he always claimed to be, a very accurate painter of the human beings... (Gissing). Gissing refers to Dickens as a painter of human beings, which is a very two dimensional metaphor. Dickens characters are like a painting rather flat and straightforward. Most of his characters are not very complex and personify either good or evil. For example Gradgrind s character reflected a rationalistic and self serving philosophy on life and we did not see any change in this until toward the end of the story when he gave up his philosophy on fact and became politically active in helping the poor. Dickens portrays characters in a particular way, he has a very narrow view of society and he places emphasis on class distinctions. He has not a wide scope; he is always noticeably at his best in dealing with an ill defined order of English folk, a class (or classes) characterized by dullness, prejudice, dogged individuality, and manners, to say the least, unengaging. (Gissing). Gissing thinks that even though we may remember the character s names, that is all that they are to us. They have no depth and the characters do not leave a lasting ... Even though most of these people were not able to stop it completely, they were a great input to stopping and putting an end to Leopold s brutality. The precipitating stressor of Janet s schizophrenic episode is more than likely the change of environment and the overwhelming change in customs. To elaborate, Janet was very sheltered at home. Her parents built a false sense of security around her by tolerating strange behaviors and allowing for them to become a part of her everyday routine rather than continuing to seek alternative options in order for her to function. Moreover, a college student without any history of mental illness or behavior issues tends to struggle with adjusting to the demands and new surroundings of school. The classes, ... • 6. On Writing Stephen King Analysis Mini Essay 1 The nonfiction piece, On Writing, by Stephen King, that is often told in a form that mirrors many fiction stories. In a nonfiction work of literature, the expectation is a formal writing style that works to convey the information without leading the reader astray. However, through the use of dialogue, imagery, and literary techniques, King manages to combine the two genres into an informative piece that is enjoyable to read. Throughout On Writing, King converts the typical, formal tone of nonfiction writing into one that is enjoyable, interesting, and in many cases humorous. Oh my God, it s breathing, you realize. Maybe it s even thinking. What in hell s name do I do next? (King 136) This passage is a metaphor that King uses to describe the feeling of creating your first really good paragraph. By comparing that to the feeling of Frankenstein and his monster, King brings a fiction aspect to this text that makes the text far more enjoyable to read. Kings dialogue also creates an informal tone in On Writing. Fuhgeddaboudit! (King 123) The beauty of this single word is the fact that it is no word at all. In order to properly express his frustration at common writing mistakes, King puts all his emotion into the phonetics of this word and not necessarily in the actual meaning of it. Imagery plays a very important role in On Writing. In the nonfiction world what you normally meet are the facts with little, if any fluff. The lid was held down by big latches; to my ... • 20. Analysis Of The Lansdowne Athlete By Lysippos Ancient sculptures bring on endless philosophical arguments regarding what is an appropriate form of perfection, defined as a fit body guided by a keen mind. This paper will approach a visual essence of the sculpture of The Lansdowne Athlete, by Lysippos, Rome 340 330 B.C. marble after a bronze original, that I viewed at the LACMA. This sculpture is located in the left wing of Greek exhibition Building, 3rd floor. I selected this sculpture as an example of an idealized body. Therefore, I will be explaining the historical background of the sculpture and address why I think it would make a good addition to our text. I will provide an analogy with other sculpture of idealized body from our textbook chapter 12 on Mind and Body mainly. I will impart more information about the essence of idealized human form as well as cultural ideals during this time period in Greece. The Lansdowne Athlete at the LACMA is an example of a well developed ideal body and carefully controlled proportions to all body parts. This sculpture is a Roman copy of an original by Lysippos made in the 1st century. It is a marble statue of 75 inches in height. The figure is in the contrapposto stance common of the style at the time and is taking a step forward. The figure still has integrity even though it has a few missing parts. Its face, which is important, is more or less intact and the standing upright with its impression of movement still visible. The missing arms, if they were restored would not add much to the sculpture and the addition of these parts will not be worth the loss of authenticity. Visiting LACMA for many years, I never noticed that ancient art has been disbanded, I was surprised! The Greek and Roman sculptures now stand in the galleries of European art. The ancient statues and vases are now part of the post antique paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts of the European Art. From my skepticism, however, I have completely converted to the curators way of thinking: the pairing of old and new art, really works! It brings out content, form, and even artistic style that would otherwise be lost. In the other hand, the sheer visual variety of white statues with more colorful objects is beautiful and passionate; much more than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to attachment means bonding between a child and caregiver or vice versa. The attachment theory is the theory that describes the long term interpersonal relationship between the humans. Panian, Z. (2012) identifies six stages in the evolution of business intelligence to its current state. Business intelligence first got introduced to the business world through Data Mining . Initially, data mining was a concept alien to the business world. But in late eighties, the business community started to find great utility in its practice. Businesses discovered that the data mining process could be employed to predict solutions to complex business problems. Following the simpler data mining techniques, the more complex On Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) techniques marked the second phase in the evolution of business intelligence. OLAP applications helped in complicated analysis of data stored in big data warehouses. These analytical applications broke down data into various dimensions to arrive at more factual results than data mining. Then came the third evolutionary stage of Balanced Scorecards (BSC) that elevated business intelligence to another level. Moving beyond decision making, Business Scorecards helped businesses in performance tracking. Particularly, BSCs helped the top management to analyze whether their strategic ... Suffocating under the restrictions and fear caused by systematic racism, she ultimately decides to become an activist, and takes an active role in demanding equality and a better life for Black Americans. The problem shouldn t be how many women are choosing abortions, but why they need the abortion in the first place. Are they uneducated about safe sex? Can they not afford protection? These are only some of the questions that should be asked when considering the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Harris identifies various factors that seem to contribute to the White African American achievement gap. Racial differences in parenting practices seem to account for a significant portion of White African American achievement gap even after controlling for socioeconomic status. This is an indication, through the suggestion of findings that White parents have the likelihood of engaging in practices that relate to academic achievement, compared to the African American parents, which includes such practices as involvement in school activities, warmth sensitivity, and monitoring as well as engaging children in decision making activities. • 41. American Symbolism In Hills Like White Elephants Title In Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway, an American man exhibits control over his lover, Jig, as they talk at a train station. Stereotypical with the role of women, Jig lacks authority and control, not only in her relationship with the American, but in her day to day life, as shown in her inability to act independently. The American s conversational coercion instills Jig with a false sense of autonomy in the relationship, ultimately pigeonholing her into submission. Almost immediately, Jig is established not as an equal, but rather as the American s subordinate. While her partner is referred to as the American, and the waitress is referred to as the woman, Jig is only known as the girl throughout most of the story. This description demonstrates the man s control over Jig, distinguishing him as superior to his lover (Rankin). Jig s inferiority is further shown through her lack of independent identity, as she is instead characterized as an extension of her lover. This is displayed in her inability to even choose a drink for herself, relying on the American to decide for her What should we drink? the girl asked (1,Hemingway), and even speak for her. This action strips Jig of independence and control, in fact, her dependence on the American causes her to constantly seek for his approval: she changes the subject when he becomes ... • 42. Measuring Chirality At Ibuprofen Using A Homemade Polarimeter Measuring Chirality in Ibuprofen Using a Homemade Polarimeter Sydney Guerin December 9, 2016 May River High School Abstract For this project, I will be conducting multiple experiments regarding the chirality of different forms of ibuprofen. The question I m trying to solve is whether or not common brands of ibuprofen have the same formulation. In order to perform this exercise, I will need to create a homemade polarimeter in order to measure the angle at which the brands of ibuprofen will reflect light, resulting in finding out if the chosen brands have a varied rotation of light. I believe that the different brands will reflect at different angles based off of its chirality. After performing the tests, the results I have gathered led me to believe that my hypothesis was proven to be wrong. The Motrin, Advil, and Equate seemed to all get bright in the same areas. The only difference was that the Motrin was the brightest one out of them all. Laboratory 7: Environmental Effects on Enzyme Activity BI 185 03 BY Charlie Kane 10/24/17 Abstract During this experiment we tested the effects that specific environmental conditions have on the enzyme, peroxidase. Through this experiment we developed an understanding of enzymes and their functions. By exposing the enzymes to different environments, we observed a changed in their activity. In order for us to measure these changes we used the technique of spectrophotometry, meaning we used a spectrophotometer, which measures the amount of light a chemical can absorb. In our findings we discovered that certain environmental factors such as pH, temperature, boiling do have an affect on enzyme activity. In conclusion the five null hypothesis were proven to be incorrect. Introduction Enzymes are biological catalysts that carry thousands of chemical reactions that occur in living cells. They could be found in every living thing. Enzymes increase the rate at which chemical reactions occur. A catalyst speeds up a chemical reaction by lowering the activation energy required. They are proteins made up of several amino acids. Each enzyme is different due to its structure, it all has different amino acid sequence. An enzymes ability to function depends on it s environment. These factors include temperature, denaturation, pH, the size , the shape, and the amount of enzymes present. Enzymes performs best at ph7. That is the same pH as blood , the more enzymes stray away from pH7 the weaker it becomes , the active site gets damaged. This makes the enzyme not active, no longer functional. When it comes to temperature enzymes at a certain temperature have maximum activity. As temperature increases the enzyme activity also increases. When enzymes reach their maximum activity level and the temperature is still increasing it will start to decline (denaturation). The rate of reaction also depends on how much enzymes are present. We tested 5 hypothesis which were the amount of enzyme does not alter the rate of a reaction. pH does not influence the rate of an enzyme reaction. Temperature does not influence the rate of an enzyme activity. Boiling an enzyme before a reaction does not influence enzyme activity. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the Canal was built towns all along the route from Buffalo to Albany prospered from the revenue and the attraction the Canal brought with it. Whether the Canal was being used for business people, immigrants, settlers of the region, or tourists, the border towns all had some appeal to these persons. After some time the state was continually asked to expand the Canal from the original route to include connecting canal routes. However, the same towns along the route from Buffalo to Albany had already been established along the lines of the original canal. These towns would need to be relocated in order to obey these new requests. This presented a major problem because the people in these towns had formed a life around the Canal and many of them made their income based of the Canal. The inhabitants of the towns changed their mentality from not wanting the Canal to invade on their lives, to it being an essential part of their lives they depended upon. The Erie Canal provided an extremely fast source of transportation compared to other ones of that time. A lot of the land that the Canal went through was uninhabited and therefore people weren t able to move through these areas. Once the Canal was built it served as that pathway through these areas. The Canal also was a much cheaper source of transportation that was used by residents, tourists, emigrants, and workers during this time. Evangelical preachers used the artificial ... • 49. The Six Chief Characteristics Of Philosophy The main goal behind philosophy is to seek the deepest, and most detailed truth behind everything in the universe. Many different concepts such as relativism attempt to disprove truth that philosophy attempts to pursue. To understand what it means for philosophy to pursue truth, we must first understand the nature of philosophy, or what philosophy really is. To understand the nature of philosophy, we must look at the six chief characteristics of philosophy. The six chief characteristics of philosophy will help us understand why other concepts such as relativism are wrong, and why philosophy does indeed pursue the deepest truth. The nature of philosophy is defined as the essence of philosophy, or what philosophy really is. First we must look at the six chief characteristics of philosophy to understand the nature of philosophy. The first chief characteristic is doing an Etymological analysis of the term philosophy. This simply means that we must analyze the word to get its root parts. If we divide philosophy it comes out to mean love of wisdom, and a philosopher is a lover of wisdom or truth. Philosophy can be seen as the desire to know deeply the world that is around us. The next chief characteristic is the basic mood of philosophy. The basic mood of philosophy is wonder or anxiety in a world we cannot understand to the fullest. This brings us to our next chief characteristic which is raising fundamental questions. These deep philosophical questions, are raised in order to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
