Essay on A Critical Review of Francis Schaeffer
Topic Paragraph Francis Schaeffer summarized his the entire book when he wrote, To understand
where we are in today s world in our intellectual ideas and in our cultural and political lives we must
trace three lines in history, namely, the philosophic, the scientific, and the religious (Schaeffer, 2005,
p.20). Schaeffer is mainly stating that society is getting away from its Christians roots. He walks
through instances in history where society has moved away from the principle teachings of the Bible.
He believes that the problems in society are because individuals are ignoring the Christian principles
that this world was built upon. He warns that this shift can have a catastrophic effect on how the world
will look in the future. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is one way that the path towards destruction can be altered. The Christian believers have an
obligation to help society realize its Christian roots and that can be done through their diligence in
spreading the word of God. The other intended audience for Schaeffer s book is the non believers.
Schaeffer hints to the fact that society s decline is a result of these non believers. He points out how
these people have coerced society to distance itself from the teachings of the Bible. By Schaeffer
pointing out the possible end result of their actions, he is hoping that this book serves as a wake up
call. He is urging non believers to change their ways before it is too late. Thesis and Bias The overall
thesis to Schaeffer s book can be found in the first chapter. To understand where we are in today s
world in our intellectual ideas and in our cultural and political lives we must trace three lines in
history, namely, the philosophic, the scientific, and the religious (Schaeffer, 2005, p.20). The bias in
this statement is the idea that the only worthwhile world view is a Christian world view. Schaeffer
insists that in order to remediate any problems in society there should be a re focus on Christian
principles. Schaeffer is trying to make a very specific point very clear in this book. He wants people to
know that society has moved away from the teachings of the Bible. He gives specific examples of how

Week 13 Introduction to Macroeconomics (Chapters 16 and 17)
1. In the years to 2050 the Japanese population is expected to decline, while the fraction of the
population that is retired is expected to increase sharply. What are the implications of these population
changes for total output and average living standards in Japan, assuming that average labour
productivity continues to grow? What if average labour productivity stagnates?
Solution 1:
Slowing population growth and an increased share of retired people both imply slower growth in the
number of people employed. If average labour productivity (output per employed worker) continues to
grow at earlier rates, total output will still grow more slowly than before, because of ... Show more

3. The following data give total output, total population and numbers employed for Germany and
Turkey in 2009. Find output per person and average labour productivity in each country. How do
living standards compare? | Germany | Turkey | Output (billions of $s) | 1,631 | 590 | Population
(millions) | 83 | 77 | Numbers employed (millions) | 40 | 23 |
Solution 3: Germany: output per person is $1,631 billion / 83 million people = $19,651 per person;
average labour productivity is $1,631 billion / 40 million employed = $40,775 per person employed.
Japan: output per person is $590 billion / 77 million people = $2,662 per person; average labour
productivity is $590 billion / 23 million employed = $25,652 per person employed. Both the living
standard (output per person) and average labour productivity (output per worker) are higher in
Germany than in Japan. But the difference between living standards in the two countries is more
marked than the difference in labour productivity. 4. Data released in February 2011 suggests that
China has overtaken Japan as the world s second largest economy as measured by the absolute size of
its GDP. Does this necessarily imply that the real living standards of Chinese citizens are now higher
than those of their Japanese counterparts?

Examples Of Linguistic Prejudice
Someone has said that it requires less mental effort to condemn than to think.
― Emma Goldman
You have a funny accent!
Where did you learn to talk?
Did you hear how she pronounces that word?
Above we have three sentences that exemplify linguistic prejudice. According to the Oxford
dictionary, prejudice is a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience .
Prejudice is not based on our own reason. Kant defines prejudice as a tendency to passivity and,
consequently, to the heteronomy of reason . This means that a prejudicial idea/belief is not authentic,
but given to us by a person or a group and we accept it without considering the facts or they are
simply unknown. We do not exercise critical thinking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It camouflages other prejudices. Considering that the way a person speaks a language is 100% linked
to who s/he is (her/his culture, social class, environment, etc.), when we exclude a person because of
the way s/he speaks, we exclude a person because of who s/he is. The problem is not on what is said ,
but who said it . When we say that a particular dialect is wrong or ugly , we are ignoring the fact that
there is no wrong way, according to Linguistics. We were led to believe that there is a best way to
speak. When we reinforce this idea we push millions of people that have no access to education to the
periphery of the world, we take away their voices. When we say s/he talks this way because s/he is
probably ignorant, poor, probably came from a poor culture we are again practicing linguistic
prejudice. Everybody has (or should have) freedom of speech. When you see a person being
linguistically prejudicial, tell this person the truth. To respect the linguistic variety of all and every
person is to respect their physical and spiritual integrity as human. This is an issue that has to be
exposed we should all talk about it.

The Frank Talent of Aretha Louise Franklin Essay
Aretha Louise Franklin was born on March 25, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee (bio 1). She was one of
five children born to Rev. Clarence L. Franklin and Barbara (Siggers) Franklin (Moritz 132). Aretha
was born into a very musical family. Her mother, Barbara, was a gospel singer and her sisters, Erma
and Carolyn, are both vocalists, too (Glickman 1, Moritz 132). Her brothers took a different,
unmusical approach to their lives. Her brother, Cecil, is the Assistant Pastor at his father s church and
her other brother, Vaughn, is a career man in the United States (Moritz 132). When Aretha was two
years old her father took her, and the rest of his family, North (Moritz 132). Five years after they

to make a gig, and being hungry and passing restaurants all along the road, and having to go off the
highway into some little city to find a place to eat because you re black that had its effect (Moritz
132). Everyone knew Aretha was incredibly talented at a very young age. At twelve years old, Aretha
cut her first record on her first solo for Chess Records. After that she went on tour with her father. In
1960, Aretha came to New York and took dancing and vocal lessons (Moritz 132). She signed a five
year contract with Columbia Records one year later in 1961 (Moritz 132). While at Columbia
Records, she recorded nine long playing albums, only selling moderately (Moritz 132). Toward the
end of 1966 Aretha turned down an offered renewed contract by Columbia, signing with Atlantic
Records instead (Moritz 133). Aretha had a reputation of being difficult to handle in the early part of
her career according to Phyl Garland of Ebony in 1967 (Moritz 133 134). She caused a small riot
when she walked out of a concert in Denver because she was only paid half of what she was promised
(Moritz 134). Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, made beautiful, soulful music over the years. She
recorded her first single, I Never Loved a Man,

Slogans In The Book 1984 By George Orwell
In the book, 1984, George Orwell establishes a haunting setting near the future. Orwell s society
thrives in the overbearing amount of power that is present. The government has an ability to
manipulate by language and by the acceptance of technology. Winston, a young man living in this
society, has a strong disfavor towards the Party. The government s way of controlling its people is by
altering their realization of the world. Slogans, used by government officials, are statements that help
enforce the control over people. War means the conflict between two parties, peace means an
agreement between two parties. Thus making the slogan War is Peace. Slavery, in 1984, essentially
means a person or group of people who are under some influence of another person. Freedom, as
applied to this circumstance, means the absence of or release from ties and obligations. This then
makes the second slogan, Freedom is Slavery. The last slogan is Ignorance is Strength . Ignorance is
the lack of not knowing; knowing gives a person strength. In the book, 1984, the governments three
slogans provide significant meaning and power throughout the Party. ... Show more content on

Psychopathy and Crime Essay
Psychopathy is a disease of the mind, in which the psychological state of someone has emotional or
behavioral problems serious enough to require psychiatric evaluation. Psychopaths have no concern
for the feelings of others and a complete disregard of any sense of social obligation. Psychopaths are
characterized by lack of empathy, poor impulse control and manipulative behaviors. They use charm,
manipulation, intimidation, and the use of severe to mild violence to satisfy their own needs.
Psychopathy is derived from two Greek words: psych, meaning soul, and pathos, meaning suffering.
They were once used to explain any form of mental illness. Psychopathy was recognized in the early
1800 s at which time Pinel explained the condition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Psychopaths can seem just like you or me, but when you are not around them this is when their mental
disorder kicks in. Psychopaths that have been put in jail committed three times as many crimes per
year then non psychopaths. 97% of convicted psychopathic criminals cause at least one violent crime
compared to 74% of non psychopaths. Psychopaths are shown to be more violence throughout their
entire life compared to a regular people. Psychopaths tend to have a greater chance of failing on parole
and mandatory supervision and have a faster rate of failing then non psychopaths. Psychopathy
predicts recidivism on conditional release as well as or better than do actuarial risk instruments.
Psychopaths recidivate at a rate of three to four times higher than that of non psychopaths.
Doctors use a simple test to predict psychopathy called a Psychopathy Checklist Revised or known as

Order and Chaos are Natural Events in Eamon Grennan’s...
Order and chaos are two events that inhabit the world that surrounds us. Natural events, such as
gravity, create order where our world has laws and principles. One the other hand, war, fighting, and
disasters make up the chaotic aspect of our world. How both are found in this world we live in, the
same two ideas of order and chaos, are found in Eamon Grennan s One Morning.
In this poem, the speaker is talks about his experiences in one significant morning. The poem
introduces a beach environment where the speaker talks about collecting rocks, while seeing a dead
otter, an oyster fisher, and a bird trying to find its prey. He recalls that this morning is the morning
after contemplating of dying, but in the second stanza he has a change ... Show more content on

Birds finding food to eat is definitely natural; what is chaotic is the how a bird is portrayed in the first
stanza. A cormorant is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as a large and voracious sea bird.
That is image in our heads in already chaotic in nature; it add insult to injury, the bird is eating and
patrolling the bay, assumedly for another animal to devour a fish. Also another bird enters the picture.
Although much less extreme, the heron found in line 6 makes an appearance. How this inspires chaos
is evident rose off a boulder where he d been invisible,/ drifted a little, stood again. The heron from
the background makes himself known, disquieting our original ideal of a peaceful stroll.
The most chaotic element of the poem not actually found in the quite disordered first stanza, but right
at the beginning of the second stanza lies the revelation of the reason for the overwhelming chaos. The
speaker had a dream, a desire, to leave this chaotic world. The speaker experiences being told that it
didn t matter. The speaker must have perceived all the past images to be chaotic because of his
depressing experience. However, even if this is the climax of chaos, it is in a way a turning point
toward are more ordered and peaceful world.
The second stanza of Eamon Grennan s One Morning focuses on the more pleasant images, as it can
be argued to portray a more ordered world, in comparison to the latter chaotic world. Seemingly,
although the mood has

Invasive Species Project
I will be doing my project on invasive species. Invasive Species are non native creatures who can
cause harm to the environment, the ecosystem, and humans. Infestations happen all around the globe,
many times every day. In fact, 20 30% of all species cause problems every single day. My blog will
contain facts, prevention, what invasive species do, how they got there in the first place, research, and
the harm that they cause to everything around them.
First, I will be informing you about invasive species. Some invasive species do not cause much harm,
due to the fact they re alien to the place. They aren t adapted to the environment. A way they could
start becoming invasive, if they dominate over indigenous creatures already living in this area.

predators/species brought over to foreign places. This information can be found here:

A Hero s Journey
Shortly after the discovery that my beloved wife had gone missing, I began to retrace my steps in
search of her. I believe I must have lost her in the process of cycling up the hill; however, I cannot
seem to make out which path I had come from. The night was closing in and I have yet to figure out
which path I had come from. I stood at the fork staring blankly at the rusty colored dirt. My first
thought was maybe she was sitting under a tree a few feet away from the road. I looked about for her
golden hair to peak through the limbs, but I could see no sign of her. I called her name, and again, no
sign. I thought to myself, perhaps she had gone to look for help at one of the nearby farms, but that
seemed fairly unlikely. My wife was not of Dutch origin, and her tongue for the language was fairly
unintelligible. I called her name several times before I heard the loud clonking of an animals hoof, a
horse, perhaps. I squinted at the path ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Causes Of College Tuition
There have been arguments when people discuss the price of attending college. The main argument is
whether college tuition is too expensive or not. Over the last few decades the college tuition rates have
increased drastically, but is a rate increase necessarily a good or bad thing. The cost to attend is too
expensive especially for low and middle income families. There are many reasons why tuition could
be considered too expensive; they include, rise in tuition, little financial aid, and lack of college
savings, to name a few. The first reason why college tuition is considered too expensive is the
continuing rise of tuition itself. In one article, between the years 1973 to 2008 tuition for a four year
increased from $9,876 to $25,145 for a private college, and $2,175 to $6,585 for public. While a two
year college tuition increased from $1,360 to $2,402. Within a thirty five year period tuition increased
$15,267 for a private college, $4,410 for public, and $1,042 for a two year college. This might not
seem too bad for it occurring in a thirty five year period, but really think about it college tuition
increases a little each day and it adds up pretty quickly ( Chronology: Recent Key Events in History of
College Tuition Cost 1). Sarah Turner mentions in her section of the anthology College Choices: The
Economies of Where to Go, When to Go, and How to Pay , that due to high levels of tuition students
are least likely to enroll in higher education. Turner also states that

Analysis Of Nick Carraway In The Great Gatsby
In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald Nick Carraway, at first seems like a big and
important part of the novel but once we meet Jay Gatsby that changes. Nick takes a back seat to be the
narrator for Gatsby s story. As a narrator Nick is the most effective choice for The Great Gatsby. This
is proven by his willingness to withhold judgment. his relationship to each of the main characters.his
outsider status and perceptiveness. In my younger and more vulnerable, years my father gave me some

not really one of them. He feels like this throughout the novel, he has rich friends and he goes to
luxurious parties but he never feels like he belongs and he is never treated like he belongs. This
outsider status helps him be a great narrator because it helps him give the reader the insider experience
but also helps keep their distance and not get too attached to that world. If Nick were an insider the
reader would not be shown a fair view of Gatsby s story. The reader would only see the East Egg side

Analysis Of Tidal Wetlands
In the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service s 130 year assessment of Status and Trends of Wetlands in the
Long Island Sound Area, the results indicated that there was a 48% loss of Tidal Wetlands from the
1880s to 2000s in New York. Even after protective legislation was passed in the 1970s, wetland
decline increased by 19% decrease in New York from 1970 to present day. (Basso, 6)
This decline in wetlands should be of concern to ____ as wetlands provide a variety of ecosystem
services to the general populace. They provide provisioning services by the providing habitats to
different marine organisms such as shellfish, finfish, and waterfowl, some of which provide humans

However, too much nitrogen is leading to the wetland s demise. While the main concern for the loss of
wetlands up until the 1970s was draining and filling, and while the laws created then focused on
reducing wetland destruction through urbanization, wetlands are still being deteriorated. Today, the
main concern is wetland loss created by increased amounts of open water on the marsh surface. The
literature suggests that on average, healthy New England marshes have 9% permanent open water on
their surface. However, an open water assessment indicates an average of 47% permanent open water
on the marshes studied (Kirwan 2013).
In Long Island, the marshes are wetter and vegetated areas are shifting from high marsh to low marsh
or to mud flat, which are far less productive and give fewer services than the salt marshes and other
high marshes that are supposed to be there. (Kirwan 2013
Warren and Niering 1993, Muschacke 2007, Tiner 2006, Field 2014, Rozsa 1995, Watson et al. 2014,

While there are plenty of human created stressors that are creating this conversion, such as invasive
species, sediment deprivation, hydraulic modification, pollution and climate change (Smith 2009,
Gedan 2009, Wigand 2014, Watson 2014, Silliman 2009, Kirwan 2013). (Silliman 2009, Lotze 2006),

Paraphilia Essay
There are many weird and disturbing things that people do all around the world, to be specific, these
certain things are done for pure sexual arousal. A paraphilia is a condition in which a person s sexual
arousal and gratification depend on fantasizing about and engaging in sexual behavior that is atypical
and extreme. I will go through multiple types of Paraphilias and explain what they are, how they affect
the public and my view towards the philia. To begin, the most common paraphilia is Fetishism. This
involves the non use of nonliving objects as a source of sexual arousal. Some examples of nonliving
objects would be: Women s panties, Bras, or High Heeled shoes. This paraphilia seems to be the least
severe out of all the others as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Examples of this are having sex with children who are not of age, touching children inappropriately,
who are not of age and child pornography. This is the most severe philia in my opinion and it holds
great consequences. One can be charged with numerous CSC charges, spend life on the sex offenders
list, go to prison for many years, or even be killed because they are a pedophile. Today, there are
roughly 400,000 registered sex offenders in the united states (80 100,000 are unregistered). And 89%
of child sexual assault cases involve people known to the child. My opinion is that these people need
to be locked up for max sentences according to the law, not life in prison as some would want. These
people commit horrible crimes to young children and need to pay for the physical and emotional
damage that has left children scarred for life.
The most disturbing of them all would have to be Necrophilia. This is the sexual attraction to dead
human bodies. Things like touching and having sex with the bodies of the deceased are examples.
There are only a dozen or so documented cases; However, it happens more than we would think.
Having intercoarse with dead human bodies is a crime in most countries and the punishment in the
United States is a felony serving no more than five years in prison. My opinion of this paraphilia is
that it takes a very, very sick mind to have intercourse with the remains of a human, it s disrespectful
to the dead and who knows what

Chemoprevention Essay
Chemoprevention is assigned by either selecting prevention of esophageal acid exposure using proton
pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy or modulation of pro inflammatory mechanisms45. Proton pump
inhibitors (PPIs) are used generally in the handling of acid related disorders. They function by
permanently obstructing the hydrogen/potassium adenosine triphosphatase enzyme system (the
H+/K+ ATPase, or, more frequently, the gastric proton pump) of the gastric parietal cells. The proton
pump is the terminal stage in gastric acid secretion and is directly accountable for secreting H+ ions
into the gastric lumen, leading the pump to be an excellent target for preventing acid secretion.
Targeting the terminal step in acid production, as well as the irreversible nature of the inhibition,
results in a class of drugs that are considerably more efficient than H2 ... Show more content on

nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs). PPI therapy can lead to partial regression of intestinal
metaplasia (IM) in BE patients, as demonstrated by the development of macroscopic islands of

nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs use, treatment of Helicobacter pylori, and erosive esophagitis.

Employee Strength Analysis
According to Strength Finders, my strengths are adaptability, includer, consistency, empathy, and
relator. For the most part I have always been very aware of most of my strengths, but the others I
haven t really paid much attention to. I was recently transferred to a new precinct without any warning
or my approval. Me being me, I didn t complain about the move because I knew regardless of where I
was moved to, I would adjust and make the best out of the move (Clifton, 2002). I have always been
able to make new associates without trying. I will be using all of these strengths daily, especially on
my job. Being able to listen and show that you understand what a person is going through in there
time of need will draw people to you (Clifton, 2002). I will always take action to make sure that all of

O. Anderson, E. C., Schreiner, L. A (2002). Strengths Quest. New York, NY: Gallup There are several
ways that organizations can utilize the strengths of there employees. First, an assessment test must be
given to find out the strengths of each employee. After the employees strengths are revealed, the
organization should try to match each employee to a job that best fit each employee s strength.
Organizations should also pay attention to how well employee work doing different task. Knowing
how well an employee works under pressure, their strengths, their weaknesses, or how well they work
with others could definitely be beneficial to the organization. Knowing that all employees in an
organization deserves to be treated fairly, and tend to put forth a better effort after recognition of their
outstanding work, organizations should do more to make employees feel that their hard work is

The Sociological Canon
The field of sociology has three sociologists who form the sociological canon, of whom many
theories, and strategies have formed how we look at society. Karl Marx, Max Weber, and Emile
Durkhiem all share a similar timeline when they were born, but even with that similarity these
sociologists saw the world in vastly different scopes which influenced their theories. These contrasting
values and theories show clearly in their work and has led to some of the most influential works
within the field, hence their place as the sociological canon. It is interesting to see the contrasting
nature between these very influential sociologists and will be the focus of this essay. While looking at
the three sociologists who make up the sociological canon it is important to take into consideration
how they view social order and social change. Karl Marx used his theory of social class in order to
explain how society structured itself (Bratton, Denham 2014). Marx theorized that classes were
relational, exploitive, and conflictive in nature. Marx explained social order, by way of the labour
market and modes of production. His theories showed a pessimistic but realistic view of how the
system abuses and takes advantage of the working class, and through strife the working class needed
to empower themselves to grow and reach their potential. Emile Durkheim theorized about the
division of labour, which was a written work that analyzed the relationship between social solidarity
and the

NASA has never made a trip to Mars, but I don t think the benefits of going to Mars will outweigh the

A Brief Note On Ann Landers, An American Advice Columnist...
Ann Landers, was an American advice columnist and eventually a nation wide media celebrity. A 1978
World Almanac Survey named her the most influential woman in the United States. She had once
mentioned that Television has proved that people will look at anything rather than each other. It means
that people would rather look that a screen than facing towards to people. This reminds me of a time in
my life when I was alone in both freshman and sophomore years. There were any times when I have
nowhere to go for lunch. No one really talked to me. It was really dreadful for me. As the years go by I
eventually improve my interaction significantly. Now to the present day, I know why I was like that.
Sense I had some experience with social media and how I see my older cousins change over the time.
It turned out that I was antisocial, I eventually notice that I don t really open up. I don t really got out
of my comfort zone. That was my problem in school, but in my older cousins case. It was going the
opposite direction, on what I have notice, we all have different interpretations on how we view certain
things, and I think thats is the major cause on why we don t have that type of connection, with each
other. But what doesn t make sense to me is that we are family we should be able to communicate with
each other without judging our differences, but that was just my own perspective on what family
should be. Anyway, I will do my best to find a way to get to know my cousins once

According to sec. 137 (1) of the Courts of Justice Act (CJA), on payment of the prescribed fee, a
person is entitled to see any document filed in a civil proceeding in a court, unless a statute or an order
of the court provides otherwise, e.g. in case of confidential information.
In addition to that, on payment of the prescribed fee, a person is entitled to see any list maintained by

Apart from that there is no civil litigation record in relation to a person that you can request from a
single authority that would cover all courts in Ontario. Instead you have to request the information as
to whether a person is or was involved in a lawsuit from every single courthouse in Ontario. There is
no established way to handle such a request. Every courthouse will handle this request the way it
considers appropriate, as there is no standard for that. This means, that a courthouse will probably
refuse to certify that kind of information and might only provide informal reference on ongoing or
past lawsuits, as the risk of mistaken identities is too high. In Canada a person can sue another

The Darkling Thrush And The Force That Through The Green...
Natural instances are prominent in Hardy s The Darkling Thrush and Thomas s The Force That
Through the Green Fuse Drives the Flower . Hardy reminisces over the past while witnessing a
changing society while Thomas reminisces over the certain destruction of his youth and vitality, even
with different concerns both authors problems are due to passing time. Both poems have a certain
contrast when explaining their theme but both are aware of the idea of death being a natural
occurrence that awaits all of us. The two author s similarities are highlighted by a look at form, tone,
words, and continuous use of nature to depict theme. In The Darkling Thrush the speaker ponders how
slow death surrounds him, and how life is diminishing with almost no reason to live in a new era full
of dullness. The speaker shows intense reflection over his thoughts and works through his ideas. When
the speaker hears a beautiful song coming from a dying bird, his dark realistic perspective of living
changes as he sees that the birds last breaths were spent singing a song. He continues to be realistic
over the topic of death and not overthink the full hearted evensong (Hardy 615), but the bird gives him
a chance to think about something more hopeful in this bleak world. The bird, a thrush which is found
in nature symbolizes the natural side of death. Even if it was passing, the bird reflected his soul in
song creating the idea of a death just being a lulling moment in a gloom lonely world;

When we think about the historical significance of Rome, it comes down to its leaders and how these
leaders ruled in their era. Confidence, commitment, inspiration, intuition, and creativity, are all
essential traits that a ruler must possess. In my opinion, no one has demonstrated these important
characteristics better than Caesar Augustus, or better known as Octavian. Octavian showed how good
of administrator he was, which was well needed after years of civil strife and social unrest. On the
other hand, military genius, Julius Caesar, was lacking in administrative qualities which infect, lead

Textbook Adoption in California, 1879-2014
Textbook Adoption in California, 1879 2014 Suppose you are a textbook publisher with a mandate to
reduce the weight of the books you put out. Research has shown that your books break backs, and the
legislature has spoken: your books will not be adopted (and you will, therefore, lose much of your
business) unless you clear strict weight limits. The weight of a book is proportional to its length, so
your first thought is to cut some of the content. Will students really read or even reference 1,000 pages
of World History, anyway? But as you start scanning for superfluous sections, you come to a startling
realization: every paragraph of the monstrous text serves a role. Not an educational or curricular role,
necessarily, but certainly a practical one. Each section is aligned with some state standard, meaning
that it purports to teach some element of state mandated curriculum. Perhaps it is the only passage that
mentions unsustainable mineral resource consumption to comply with California s Standard MS ESS3
4 for eighth grade science, or maybe it provides a particularly clear example of making an argument
from evidence that will be helpful in convincing state officials that the book adheres to their
curriculum. Cutting these standards aligned passages, even if they are not actually contributing to the
cohesion of the text, could easily get you knocked off the list of instructional materials approved for
state purchase. Maybe you could remove some pictures? Nope: pictures,

Book Review
A Worn Path by Eudora Welty
The author, Eudora Welty was an award winning American author who wrote short stories and novels
about the American South. Her first short story appeared in 1936, and gradually she began to e
published in small, then regional and general circulation magazines. She published collections of her
short stories and began publishing novels as well. She was the first living author to have her works
published by the library of America.
A Worn Path written by Eudora Welty is an interesting short story about an elderly African American
woman walking through the woods into town, and the story is also heaving with symbolism and
several themes. First and the most obvious symbol in the story A Worn Path is the Phoenix and
Phoenix Jackson s comparison to the mythological bird, the Phoenix. Phoenix is a mythological bird
that is said to live 500 years or more than 500 years, die in flames and rise again from the ashes. Just
as the Phoenix bird has a cycle of life, death and rebirth, Phoenix Jackson takes a dangerous journey
through the woods n her life time.
Phoenix Jackson is an old, old woman. Actually we do not know exactly how old she is, but we could
know that she is small and frail that have mention from the story, when a black dog comes out of the

her with his gun, and when he asks if the gun doesn t scare her, she replies, No, sir, I seen plenty go
off closer by, in my day, and for less than what I done. She is not sure if he saw her, but she knows

Controversial Sports Mascots Analysis
A very sensitive subject and tough question that has been asked since the early 1900 s is, should
controversial sports mascots be replaced with mascots that are not offensive. It is a topic that
continues even today as people protest against what they believe is stereotypical sport mascots. In the
article, Controversial Sports Mascots Be Replaced, the authors of each article discusses how certain
groups of people, specifically Native Americans, believe certain mascots are offensive and should
from sport team names. The author attempts to create sympathy within the reader by sharing a story
from is youth that tells how his mom was displeased with a hat he wore home that had a Chief wahoo
on it. He told how his mom jerked his hat off and threw it in the trash because she had been fighting
against Indian stereotypes all her life. While the author believes that these Native Americans are right
to protest and fight to have the mascots changed, his argument is not entirely convincing because to
me his perceptions of the Florida State Seminoles war painted and lance threatening mascot Chief
Osceola is intended to be menacing, and that s the take away many children will have. I am ... Show

  • 2. Essay on A Critical Review of Francis Schaeffer Topic Paragraph Francis Schaeffer summarized his the entire book when he wrote, To understand where we are in today s world in our intellectual ideas and in our cultural and political lives we must trace three lines in history, namely, the philosophic, the scientific, and the religious (Schaeffer, 2005, p.20). Schaeffer is mainly stating that society is getting away from its Christians roots. He walks through instances in history where society has moved away from the principle teachings of the Bible. He believes that the problems in society are because individuals are ignoring the Christian principles that this world was built upon. He warns that this shift can have a catastrophic effect on how the world will look in the future. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is one way that the path towards destruction can be altered. The Christian believers have an obligation to help society realize its Christian roots and that can be done through their diligence in spreading the word of God. The other intended audience for Schaeffer s book is the non believers. Schaeffer hints to the fact that society s decline is a result of these non believers. He points out how these people have coerced society to distance itself from the teachings of the Bible. By Schaeffer pointing out the possible end result of their actions, he is hoping that this book serves as a wake up call. He is urging non believers to change their ways before it is too late. Thesis and Bias The overall thesis to Schaeffer s book can be found in the first chapter. To understand where we are in today s world in our intellectual ideas and in our cultural and political lives we must trace three lines in history, namely, the philosophic, the scientific, and the religious (Schaeffer, 2005, p.20). The bias in this statement is the idea that the only worthwhile world view is a Christian world view. Schaeffer insists that in order to remediate any problems in society there should be a re focus on Christian principles. Schaeffer is trying to make a very specific point very clear in this book. He wants people to know that society has moved away from the teachings of the Bible. He gives specific examples of how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the years to 2050 the Japanese population is expected to decline, while the fraction of the population that is retired is expected to increase sharply. What are the implications of these population changes for total output and average living standards in Japan, assuming that average labour productivity continues to grow? What if average labour productivity stagnates? Solution 1: Slowing population growth and an increased share of retired people both imply slower growth in the number of people employed. If average labour productivity (output per employed worker) continues to grow at earlier rates, total output will still grow more slowly than before, because of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 3. The following data give total output, total population and numbers employed for Germany and Turkey in 2009. Find output per person and average labour productivity in each country. How do living standards compare? | Germany | Turkey | Output (billions of $s) | 1,631 | 590 | Population (millions) | 83 | 77 | Numbers employed (millions) | 40 | 23 | Solution 3: Germany: output per person is $1,631 billion / 83 million people = $19,651 per person; average labour productivity is $1,631 billion / 40 million employed = $40,775 per person employed. Japan: output per person is $590 billion / 77 million people = $2,662 per person; average labour productivity is $590 billion / 23 million employed = $25,652 per person employed. Both the living standard (output per person) and average labour productivity (output per worker) are higher in Germany than in Japan. But the difference between living standards in the two countries is more marked than the difference in labour productivity. 4. • 4. Examples Of Linguistic Prejudice Someone has said that it requires less mental effort to condemn than to think. ― Emma Goldman You have a funny accent! Where did you learn to talk? Did you hear how she pronounces that word? Above we have three sentences that exemplify linguistic prejudice. According to the Oxford dictionary, prejudice is a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience . Prejudice is not based on our own reason. Kant defines prejudice as a tendency to passivity and, consequently, to the heteronomy of reason . This means that a prejudicial idea/belief is not authentic, but given to us by a person or a group and we accept it without considering the facts or they are simply unknown. We do not exercise critical thinking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It camouflages other prejudices. Considering that the way a person speaks a language is 100% linked to who s/he is (her/his culture, social class, environment, etc.), when we exclude a person because of the way s/he speaks, we exclude a person because of who s/he is. The problem is not on what is said , but who said it . When we say that a particular dialect is wrong or ugly , we are ignoring the fact that there is no wrong way, according to Linguistics. We were led to believe that there is a best way to speak. When we reinforce this idea we push millions of people that have no access to education to the periphery of the world, we take away their voices. When we say s/he talks this way because s/he is probably ignorant, poor, probably came from a poor culture we are again practicing linguistic prejudice. Everybody has (or should have) freedom of speech. When you see a person being linguistically prejudicial, tell this person the truth. To respect the linguistic variety of all and every person is to respect their physical and spiritual integrity as human. This is an issue that has to be exposed we should all talk about it. ... Her mother, Barbara, was a gospel singer and her sisters, Erma and Carolyn, are both vocalists, too (Glickman 1, Moritz 132). Her brothers took a different, unmusical approach to their lives. Her brother, Cecil, is the Assistant Pastor at his father s church and her other brother, Vaughn, is a career man in the United States (Moritz 132). Aretha had a reputation of being difficult to handle in the early part of her career according to Phyl Garland of Ebony in 1967 (Moritz 133 134). She caused a small riot when she walked out of a concert in Denver because she was only paid half of what she was promised (Moritz 134). • 7. Slogans In The Book 1984 By George Orwell In the book, 1984, George Orwell establishes a haunting setting near the future. Orwell s society thrives in the overbearing amount of power that is present. The government has an ability to manipulate by language and by the acceptance of technology. Winston, a young man living in this society, has a strong disfavor towards the Party. The government s way of controlling its people is by altering their realization of the world. Slogans, used by government officials, are statements that help enforce the control over people. War means the conflict between two parties, peace means an agreement between two parties. Natural events, such as gravity, create order where our world has laws and principles. One the other hand, war, fighting, and disasters make up the chaotic aspect of our world. How both are found in this world we live in, the same two ideas of order and chaos, are found in Eamon Grennan s One Morning. A cormorant is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as a large and voracious sea bird. Also another bird enters the picture. Although much less extreme, the heron found in line 6 makes an appearance. The heron from the background makes himself known, disquieting our original ideal of a peaceful stroll. The most chaotic element of the poem not actually found in the quite disordered first stanza, but right at the beginning of the second stanza lies the revelation of the reason for the overwhelming chaos. The speaker had a dream, a desire, to leave this chaotic world. The speaker experiences being told that it didn t matter. The speaker must have perceived all the past images to be chaotic because of his depressing experience. However, even if this is the climax of chaos, it is in a way a turning point toward are more ordered and peaceful world. I believe I must have lost her in the process of cycling up the hill; however, I cannot seem to make out which path I had come from. The night was closing in and I have yet to figure out which path I had come from. I stood at the fork staring blankly at the rusty colored dirt. My first thought was maybe she was sitting under a tree a few feet away from the road. I looked about for her golden hair to peak through the limbs, but I could see no sign of her. I called her name, and again, no sign. I thought to myself, perhaps she had gone to look for help at one of the nearby farms, but that seemed fairly unlikely. • 12. Causes Of College Tuition There have been arguments when people discuss the price of attending college. The main argument is whether college tuition is too expensive or not. Over the last few decades the college tuition rates have increased drastically, but is a rate increase necessarily a good or bad thing. The cost to attend is too expensive especially for low and middle income families. There are many reasons why tuition could be considered too expensive; they include, rise in tuition, little financial aid, and lack of college savings, to name a few. The first reason why college tuition is considered too expensive is the continuing rise of tuition itself. In one article, between the years 1973 to 2008 tuition for a four year increased from $9,876 to $25,145 for a private college, and $2,175 to $6,585 for public. While a two year college tuition increased from $1,360 to $2,402. Within a thirty five year period tuition increased $15,267 for a private college, $4,410 for public, and $1,042 for a two year college. This might not seem too bad for it occurring in a thirty five year period, but really think about it college tuition increases a little each day and it adds up pretty quickly ( Chronology: Recent Key Events in History of College Tuition Cost 1). Sarah Turner mentions in her section of the anthology College Choices: The Economies of Where to Go, When to Go, and How to Pay , that due to high levels of tuition students are least likely to enroll in higher education. The literature suggests that on average, healthy New England marshes have 9% permanent open water on their surface. However, an open water assessment indicates an average of 47% permanent open water on the marshes studied (Kirwan 2013). Today, there are roughly 400,000 registered sex offenders in the united states (80 100,000 are unregistered). And 89% of child sexual assault cases involve people known to the child. My opinion is that these people need to be locked up for max sentences according to the law, not life in prison as some would want. These people commit horrible crimes to young children and need to pay for the physical and emotional damage that has left children scarred for life. The most disturbing of them all would have to be Necrophilia. This is the sexual attraction to dead human bodies. Things like touching and having sex with the bodies of the deceased are examples. There are only a dozen or so documented cases; However, it happens more than we would think. Having intercoarse with dead human bodies is a crime in most countries and the punishment in the United States is a felony serving no more than five years in prison. Chemoprevention Essay Chemoprevention is assigned by either selecting prevention of esophageal acid exposure using proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy or modulation of pro inflammatory mechanisms45. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are used generally in the handling of acid related disorders. They function by permanently obstructing the hydrogen/potassium adenosine triphosphatase enzyme system (the H+/K+ ATPase, or, more frequently, the gastric proton pump) of the gastric parietal cells. The proton pump is the terminal stage in gastric acid secretion and is directly accountable for secreting H+ ions into the gastric lumen, leading the pump to be an excellent target for preventing acid secretion. Karl Marx, Max Weber, and Emile Durkhiem all share a similar timeline when they were born, but even with that similarity these sociologists saw the world in vastly different scopes which influenced their theories. These contrasting values and theories show clearly in their work and has led to some of the most influential works within the field, hence their place as the sociological canon. It is interesting to see the contrasting nature between these very influential sociologists and will be the focus of this essay. While looking at the three sociologists who make up the sociological canon it is important to take into consideration how they view social order and social change. Karl Marx used his theory of social class in order to explain how society structured itself (Bratton, Denham 2014). Marx theorized that classes were relational, exploitive, and conflictive in nature. Marx explained social order, by way of the labour market and modes of production. His theories showed a pessimistic but realistic view of how the system abuses and takes advantage of the working class, and through strife the working class needed to empower themselves to grow and reach their potential. • 29. The Darkling Thrush And The Force That Through The Green... Natural instances are prominent in Hardy s The Darkling Thrush and Thomas s The Force That Through the Green Fuse Drives the Flower . Hardy reminisces over the past while witnessing a changing society while Thomas reminisces over the certain destruction of his youth and vitality, even with different concerns both authors problems are due to passing time. Both poems have a certain contrast when explaining their theme but both are aware of the idea of death being a natural occurrence that awaits all of us. The two author s similarities are highlighted by a look at form, tone, words, and continuous use of nature to depict theme. In The Darkling Thrush the speaker ponders how slow death surrounds him, and how life is diminishing with almost no reason to live in a new era full of dullness. The speaker shows intense reflection over his thoughts and works through his ideas. When the speaker hears a beautiful song coming from a dying bird, his dark realistic perspective of living changes as he sees that the birds last breaths were spent singing a song. He continues to be realistic over the topic of death and not overthink the full hearted evensong (Hardy 615), but the bird gives him a chance to think about something more hopeful in this bleak world. The bird, a thrush which is found in nature symbolizes the natural side of death. Even if it was passing, the bird reflected his soul in song creating the idea of a death just being a lulling moment in a gloom lonely world; ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Research has shown that your books break backs, and the legislature has spoken: your books will not be adopted (and you will, therefore, lose much of your business) unless you clear strict weight limits. The weight of a book is proportional to its length, so your first thought is to cut some of the content. Will students really read or even reference 1,000 pages of World History, anyway? But as you start scanning for superfluous sections, you come to a startling realization: every paragraph of the monstrous text serves a role. Not an educational or curricular role, necessarily, but certainly a practical one. Each section is aligned with some state standard, meaning that it purports to teach some element of state mandated curriculum. Perhaps it is the only passage that mentions unsustainable mineral resource consumption to comply with California s Standard MS ESS3 4 for eighth grade science, or maybe it provides a particularly clear example of making an argument from evidence that will be helpful in convincing state officials that the book adheres to their curriculum. Cutting these standards aligned passages, even if they are not actually contributing to the cohesion of the text, could easily get you knocked off the list of instructional materials approved for state purchase.
