Wasps Research Paper
When one considers important events in US history, things like the American Revolution, the
Westward Expansion, or the Civil Rights Movement come to mind. One in particular that I find
compelling, is the creation of the Women Airforce Service Pilots better known as WASPs, during
World War II. I find it interesting because prior to this time and after this period, woman had a very
limited social status. But for a brief time in the 1940s, women achieved not only job equality but went
above and beyond what society expected in many areas. The WASPs were one such group who broke
barriers in more ways than one.
America s future appeared to gleam brightly for most Americans when Herbert Hoover was
inaugurated president in 1929. However, a great ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was a short bubble of equality and opportunity for women one not available before this time, and
not present again for many years to come. While the WASPs represent equality in the military work
force, they also represent something greater: Women following their passions and dreams. Anything is
possible! If you dream it and you believe it, you can do it. Do your homework, dream your dreams, be
true to yourself and someday, with hard work and persistence, you too can fly wingtip to wingtip with
any pilot, in any plane, anywhere! These woman led by example by following this and achieving
goals. Some one so bold and bright like Jacqueline Cochran ought to have been recognized
immediately after her incredible success. She will never be forgotten for, she did so much to make her
dream a reality. I found my interest in the WASP program very easily, because I have always dreamt of
being a pilot. I wanted to learn more about where it all began, and I m glad I did. The experiences
Cochran and the Wasps fought for made it possible for me to follow my destiny. To have such
motivation and endurance to excel in something you believe in, is so powerful and can really change
the outcome for not just one but

Analysis Of The Poem Ode Of Spring By John Keats Essay
In the poem Ode to Autumn by John Keats, my initial thoughts of this work is how the author does a
beautiful job describing the season. The way that he makes his words come to life. The poem makes
you feel as if you are right there in the midst of autumn. As I read through the poem, it was as if I
could inhale the autumn air. I think the thing that I loved most about this piece is the mere fact that it
is my most favorite season of the year. When the poem talks about the songs of spring, it tells you to
think not of them. In other words, this is the season of autumn and it too has its own songs to sing. We
shouldn t rush through this amazing season, but yet slow down and enjoy each moment that it brings
us. The Romantic relationship of nature and soul communicated in one of two ways. The landscape
was, on one hand viewed as an expansion of the human identity, equipped for sensitivity for man s
enthusiastic state. On other hand, nature was viewed as a vehicle for soul just as man; the breath of
God fills both man and the earth (Hanson, 2015). Keats stood out in the early nineteenth century
Romanticism, a development that embraced the sacredness of emotion and creative energy and
privileged the magnificence of the natural world (John Keats, n.d.).
In the attempt of bringing old ways to gain new knowledge John Keats wrote the Romanticism style
poem, Ode to Autumn . With the many literary devices available to the Romantics, poetry was the
most favored (Keats,

Puritan Citizen In The Scarlet Letter By Nathaniel Hawthorne
Throughout the novel The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne develops compelling characters that
are starkly different from the normal Puritan citizen. The novel mainly focuses on Hester, a Puritan
woman living in New England, and the story of her affair and how it affects her life and the lives of
those around her. Puritan citizens are illustrated as stern, dreary characters, but Hawthorne brings up
sin, love, and hate even in the characters who are seemingly the most rigid when it comes to Puritan
lifestyle. Chillingworth, Hester, and Pearl of the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
display complex character traits, including admiration, honesty, and loneliness. Hester s daughter,
Pearl, has distinct characteristics that make her a major character in this novel. In the text, Hawthorne
reveals that Pearl feels isolated from society, and has to go through any struggles in her life alone. The
singularity lay in the hostile feelings with which the child regarded ... Show more content on

Although Hester deeply betrayed Chillingworth with her affair, he still admires her and the love he felt
for her in the past still lingers with him. Thou hadst great elements. Peradventure, hadst thou met
earlier with a better love than mine, this evil had not been. I pity thee, for the good that has been
wasted in thy nature! (Hawthorne 157). Chillingworth admires Hester for her great qualities. He says
that she could have met a better man and lived a better life if this sin and evil had not taken place and
can see that her good qualities were wasted when she married him. As a result, Chillingworth
empathizes with her because the attributes he loved about her have transformed due to her punishment
physically and mentally. Chillingworth still loves and admires Hester s good qualities, but understands
why she fell in love with another

The Da Vinci Code By Dan Brown
Learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else. (Balt, 2013). This is a quote by
Leonardo da Vinci and states one of his main ideas; knowledge will open your mind to new ideas and
helps you learn about the past. A book that represents this quote, is the Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown.
This book is the thrilling story of Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu in their hunt to solve the dying
wish of Sophie s grandfather. Not only does it contain a fantastic storyline, it also is full of rich
history. John Paul Richter said history is like religion, it unites all learning and power and that is
exactly what happens in the Da Vinci Code. His life was filled with many things that were hidden to
the others, his paintings were filled with many things that are still a mystery to this day. The book the
Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown is a historically accurate portrayal of the mysterious life of Leonardo
Da Vinci and one of his most famous paintings, the Mona Lisa.
One of the many things that influenced Da Vinci in his art was coding. Leonardo Da Vinci s first
painting he coded in was The Annunciation under the apprentice of Andrea del Verrocchio. Towards
the end of the creation of the painting, he jumped in to finish the painting for Andrea and painted an
angel. The angel is invisible to the eye because he used a non lead paint that was different from the
one Andrea used (Petricevic, 2015). The angel can only be seen under a specific light and it disappears

TO WHAT EXTENT WAS THERE A MID TUDOR CRISIS DURING THE REIGNS OF EDWARD
VI AND MARY I? The mid Tudor crisis is a term often used by historians to describe the reigns of
Edward VI (1547 1553) and Mary I (1553 1558). This period can be seen as a crisis, due to the fact
that there were so many problems financially, socially, religiously and constitutionally, which led to
rebellions, and placed the country in a very unstable position. It is clear that many of the origins of this
crisis have their roots in the reign of Henry VIII. He left a very difficult legacy to his successors, but it
must be remembered that Somerset provoked the problems already in existence and Northumberland
and Mary I then had the difficult task of resolving them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Northumberland also established the Privy Coffer to provide contingency funds. Mary herself
reformed the customs and introduced the book of rates in 1558. There was also, as Guy perceives a
shift towards national finance . Although the period 1552 8 is still described as a crisis, it must be
remembered that there were some productive reforms and that the situation did not decline. Historians
such as Pollard who see government as sterile, impotent and unproductive at this time do not seem to
have taken into account these positive financial developments. It is evident that Henry was at the root
of the financial problems and that Somerset exacerbated them. However the positive achievements of
Northumberland and Mary must not be forgotten. Somerset lacked charm and made enemies easily.
His arrogance and pride created resentment. He was a weak administrator who refused to listen to the
experts. The crisis came for Somerset, in 1559 when he failed to deal decisively with rebellions in the
west and in Norfolk (which had been partly caused by his own policies). As Dale Hoak points out his
colleagues decided to get rid of him at this point not because he supported the poor but because he was
incompetent . When Northumberland came into power, even though his reforms were far more
extreme, with no possibility of alternative

Analysis Of The Book Horrible Things
The children s book Terrible Things is an allegory of the Holocaust as written by Eve
Bunting. It involves a community of animals who are taken away group by group by the
Terrible Things. The genre of the children s book Terrible Things is fantasy as characterised by the
fictional events and talking animals. The purpose of this story was to entertain young children, but has
a secondary purpose of informing readers of a hidden message pertaining to the events of the
Holocaust which targets small children and adults.
The author uses various elements of literature and language to support her purpose an dto make this
story a portrayal of its genre. Characters that the author uses forest animals such as white rabbits,
birds, frogs, fish, squirrels and porcupines. Having personified animals is a trait of many fantasy
stories. It also has a clear protagonist and antagonist, the protagonist being Little Rabbit and the
antagonist being the Terrible Things. Also, the author s diction and syntax are simple and the names
that she chooses for the characters are very childlike, for example the Terrible Things. She uses
imagery to add dimension to a simple story like when she uses shimmering fish and the cool brown
waters of the forest pond. Little Rabbit. The author uses this to develop the setting and also appeal to
the reader s emotion of happiness and serenity which makes the plot more dramatic. The sentences are
short and without too many details The story is

The Importance Of Water In Michigan
Living around the Great Lakes like we do in Michigan brings a lot of advantages. We have a great
amount of water, unlike much of the United States. Water has shaped Michigan to its shape over the
past thousands of years. The total area of Michigan is 96,716 miles squared. The total surface of the
Great Lakes is 94,250 miles squared. Michigan is surrounded by 4 of the 5 Great Lakes like shown in
figure 1. The Great Lakes include Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Erie. Water
has shaped Michigan to the shape it is by many different ways. Erosion, transportation, deposition,
glaciers, and manmade causes.

It takes all of them to change the land to where it was thousands of years ago. It is still changing today,
and will continue to change for as long as we can imagine. The causes range from human causes to
natural causes. The beautiful state of Michigan is a prime example of how water has shaped us to what
we are now. We take for granted the beautiful Great Lakes we have. We need to conserve what we
have. We are lucky enough to have such a beautiful lake such as Lake Superior that we need to count

The Big Bang
The universe is a magnificent place. There are thought to be more than 100 billion galaxies, each, with
100 billion stars (Hawking 48). There are vast clouds of gas, light years across, each taking on its own
dazzling shape and color. In our solar system alone, there are planets asteroids, comets and moons. For
millennia, humans have attributed the workings and beauty of the cosmos to the divine. Slowly, we
learned that laws governed the motion of these celestial bodies, laws which would come to be known
as the laws of physics. It was not a god that was making the planets orbit the sun, but gravity. Through
observations, mankind learned of new laws, and discarded old ones that no longer matched the
observations. Eventually, a prediction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When infrared radiation becomes redshifted, it appears to be microwaves, which have even longer
wavelengths than infrared radiation. At around the same time Dicke and Peebles were making this
prediction, in 1965, two physicists at the Bell Telephone Laboratories in New Jersey, Arno Penzias
and Robert Wilson, were receiving a lot of microwave interference with their equipment (Hawking
55). They had a very sensitive microwave detector, and were receiving this interference no matter
where they pointed the detector. They eventually concluded that the interference was everywhere, and
from outside the atmosphere, and extremely uniform. It was the same no matter what time of day, or
year. This meant the microwaves they were detecting were originating from outside of the solar
system, and even the galaxy (Hawking 55). It was eventually realized that this microwave background
was the same that Dicke, Peeples, and Gamow had predicted. Penzias and Wilson had found the glow
of the Big Bang. In 1992, COBE (Cosmic Background Explorer satellite) was able to find slight
variations in the microwave background. This meant that the early universe was not completely even,
allowing matter to clump together and structures to form such as galaxies (Hawking 56). The amount
of evidence for the Big Bang was rising, and it was starting to seem like an extremely probable theory.

The Nuclear Of Nuclear Power Essay
Nuclear power has the potential to create vast amounts of energy from a comparatively miniscule fuel
source. According to the Nuclear Energy Institute, ...as of November 2016, 30 countries worldwide are
operating 450 nuclear reactors for electricity generation and 60 new nuclear plants are under
construction (Nuclear Energy Institute, 2016). Not only has nuclear power seen use across the world,
but it has seen applications in the United States and right here in Florida. Currently, there are two
facilities operated by Florida Power and Light (FPL) in the Sunshine State that produce over 3,000
megawatts of energy homes, public buildings, and businesses alike (Florida Power and Light, 2016a).
However, these plants are hundreds of miles away from Volusia County (located near the major
metropolitan areas of Port St. Lucie and Miami) and their benefits cannot be reaped by citizens in the
county due to this distance. With successful nuclear plants already in operation within the state, why
should Volusia County not try to acknowledge the possibility of such a project?
Fossil fuels, as is widely known, are exhaustible resources that cannot possibly sustain humankind s
energy needs ad infinitum. Nuclear energy provides a way to wean our population off natural gases,
not necessarily overnight, but over the course of years or decades. Volusia does have the space, and
the St. John s River provides an excellent water source to take advantage of for cooling the towers
necessary to sustain

The Story Of A Dreamer
Before I knew it, the next summer had passed, and I found myself in the bustling streets of Diagon
Alley, shopping for school supplies unfortunately, with my family. Elara and Theodore were off
gaping at a shop window that was displaying the Nimbus 2000, which, I admit, was very aesthetically
pleasing. My little brother, who loved to play Quidditch, stood there with both of his palms, his nose,
and forehead pressed to the glass with a gigantic grin on his face. I chuckled at this, since Theo really

coming? How did he know it was specifically me? You have? I asked meekly, my voice squeaked a bit
in surprise which made me blush a furious red in embarrassment. The sound of his rubber soled shoes
tapping against the rocky floor snapped me out of my embarrassment and my cheeks returned to their
usual pale color. He inched closer to me and smiled a toothy smile, and, as I noticed earlier, he was
still carrying a dusty, brown, rectangular looking box that had a gold engraving on the top. He
gingerly removed the lid of the box and his slender fingers wrapped around a long, cylindrical piece of

globalization started in the post war era when the United States was seen as the most powerful country

The International Commercial Arbitration Process
The International Commercial Arbitration process is a means whereby disputes related to businesses
involving transnational parties are resolved by using arbitrators instead of taking the matter through a
judicial system in the courts. The arbitration process requires that there is an agreement between the
parties involvd. This agreement is brought forward by an agreement clause that is usually found in the
business contract agreement and decision made is binding (Moses M 2012). According to
UNCITRAL, arbitration is an internationally recognized process. A commercial arbitration is one that
deals with matters arising as a result of relationships caused by commercial nature regardless of
whether it is contractual or not.
This arbitration process is preferred by many due to various reasons; the litigation in a court that is
foreign is times very expensive ,time consuming and can lead to the development of adversarial
relationships between the parties, the arbitration awards by the tribunal are recognized internationally
for about 140 countries worldwide abide to the terms of Convention on Recognition and enforcement
of Foreign Arbitral Awards of 1958 also known as the New York convention and the arbitration panel
is composed of arbitrators who are chosen by the parties involved. The arbitration is also a highly
confidential process with the arbitral awards issued being final and binding hence leaving no chance
for appeals ( Bennett S 2002).

Evolution Of The Female Professional Statistics
Evolution is something that has occurred since the beginning of time and as the decades go on,
evolution continues to occur throughout various aspects of life. One of these prominent spectrums is
the work place. While women have not always blossomed in the business world, the female
professional statistics have begun and continued to increase as time has. Although there is more
gender equality amongst several companies, the numbers aren t necessarily where they should be.
According to an article by Warner, women make up 50.8% of the population, only 14.6% of those
women hold executive positions in the workplace. Even less are top earners and less than 5% are
Fortune 500 CEO s. The numbers continue to drop for women of color as only 11.9% hold positions at
the manager level (Warner, 2014). And according to the article by Kranc (2014), ...although women
make up 19 percent of director positions within the S P 100, they represent only 8 percent of the
highest paid executives (Kranc, 2014). These numbers provided by Warner are proof that there are still
problems regarding the growth of women in the corporate world, especially when the women are of a
minority background. Fortunately, as will be discussed in this assignment, this gender gap is beginning
to close as women are standing their ground and fighting for the positions and pay that they deserve.

Moving To Atlanta
I grew up and spent most of my life living up north in Waldorf, Maryland, as my mother and step
father are employed by the U.S Military. They were stationed on Andrews Air Force Base for eight
years, but in 2006 they were both moved to Robins Air Force Base, in Warner Robins, Georgia.
During this time I moved to Atlanta to live with my dad for a year, before moving to Warner Robins to
live with my mom again. Upon arriving in the small city of Warner Robins, I noticed a big difference
in the population, social life, and education.
The city of Atlanta is full of people, and is growing by the numbers everyday. A lot of people move
here for schooling, a new career, cheaper living, and for the high city lifestyle. Whereas for Warner
Robins, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The only problem I had with schooling was with the curriculum, as it was harder than any other school
I had previously attended, and staffed a lot of teachers who didn t care too much about the students
education. I felt that I wouldn t be properly prepared for college, and would instead be forced into
adjusting at a community college upon graduating. Warner Robins school system in contrast was
exceptional, as there were teacher s that cared about each students progression, and there were about
25 30 students in each class. The teacher s stuck to the curriculum for each class, and they believed by
the end of each students high school experience, they would be ready for college courses. I feel that
every student needs a school system like this, but I know that not all small cities are going to be like
this, and not all large cities are going to bad school system like Atlanta.
Living in a large city was a good experience for me and taught me a lot. You can meet a lot of
interesting people, and see a lot of amusing sites for fun, social outings. Every kid or person that
moves around a lot, hopes to end up in an city like Atlanta at least once. I got that chance, with my
only bad experience coming from being enrolled in the DeKalb County School System. In the end, I
enjoy living in Atlanta, and I find the big city life a better fit for

The Welfare System Of The United States
In The United States there is the aid that we refer to as the Welfare system. There is usually a very bad
stigma behind the name welfare system but during the 1930 s The Great Depression affected roughly
sixty percent of families who were barely living and it was not because of bad choices. (Jensen, C.,
2014). During The Great Depression the welfare system was a useful tool the many modifications to
the structure over the years has not changed the focus of the systems main focal points.
The Welfare system can be divided into two different classes these would be social and economic
classes. The social aspect includes any plan brought forth to help poverty level members of the
community and asset in there need with financial support. Then there is economic support it is a class
because it is there to aid the society that can sustain themselves and their children due to circumstance
such as adversities, untrained labor ability, and disabilities. In so many situations the older public and
the single this includes the divorced parents may also qualify for assistance. To be given benefits, most
programs require that there be verification of needs that has been evaluated and set at a basic state to
state standard. This is because welfare misuse in the past has made it more difficult and threatened the
reliability of the system. A frequent thing that is used is what is called the means test, which estimates
income and compares individuals to the set standard of living. When a

Relatedness is the socially recognized ties that connect people in a variety of different ways. It

cases where more than one substance is shared.

Feminism in Medea by Euripides Essay
Feminism in Medea by Euripides The play Medea by Euripides challenges the dominant views of
femininity in the patriarchal society of the Greeks. While pursuing her ambition Medea disregards
many of the feminine stereotypes/ characteristics of the patriarchal Greek society. She questions the
inequality of women in a patriarchal society, contradicts Jason?s chauvinist beliefs, challenges the
stereotype that women are weak and passive and completely disregards the feminine role of
motherhood. Feminism is the belief that women and men are, and have been, treated differently by
society, and that women have frequently and systematically been unable to participate fully in all
social arenas and institutions. This belief is confirmed in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then she was transferred to the home of her husband where she was to fulfill her principal function,
the bearing and rearing children. Medea shows the inequality of women in Greek society. The betrayal
of Medea by Jason through his marriage to another woman enrages Medea. She begins to question the
role and position of women in a patriarchal society. Are we women not the wretchedness? We scratch
and save a dowry to buy a man?Our lives depends on how his lordship feels. For better for worse we
can?t divorce him. (p.8, Medea). However, a husband tired of domesticity, Goes out sees friends and
enjoys himself?. (p.8and 9, Medea). Medea compares the virtual slavery of women to the absolute
freedom of men, showing the inequality and disempowerment of women in society at that time.
Jason?s chauvinist beliefs are put under the microscope. Jason airs his views about what all women
want: If they?re (women) happy in bed, they?re happy everywhere . By comparing Medea?s pure
feminism to Jason?s selfish chauvinism, Euripides brokers sympathy and support for feminism from
the audience.
Medea questions the firmly held belief in Greek society that women are weak and passive. Wanting
revenge on Jason for his betrayal of her, Medea must take control of the situation, a stereotypical
masculine quality. Though she cannot become a man or take power like a man, she perceives her

Animal Testing Should Not Be Banned
Picture yourself applying your favorite make up or taking medicine prescribed to you by your doctor,
and ask yourself, how do you know it s safe? Have you ever wondered what goes in to make sure that
cosmetics and medicine isn t lethal? A majority of ensuring items such as medicine and cosmetics are
safe to use is done by testing the medicine and cosmetics on a multitude of different kinds of animals
(Abbott 1). Animal testing saved many lives in the past ( Animal , par.7) but as science bred new
methods, much like in vitro, which uses human cells cultivated in a lab, the potential for a replacement
to animal testing arose (Abbott 1). Whether or not one is more effective than the other has been a hot
topic for years, and multiple studies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the animal shows any irritation or damage, it is possible to decide whether or not the chemical is
permissible to use in consumer products. Experiments such as these are performed to test whether or
not items like mascara are safe for humans to use depending on the reaction of the animal (Abbott 1).
Many of these experiments require hundreds of animals to get a clear result (Abbott 1). As animal
testing progressed throughout history, health organizations and industries started the initiation of
alternative tests, which involve a number of different approaches that do not involve animals. Finding
alternatives to testing with animals wasn t a main priority for many, until the European Union initiated
a program called REACH, which stands for Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals
(Abbott 1). This initiative required European countries to document the 30,000+ chemicals that are
used in experiments to measure the safety of cosmetics and medications. Issuing this initiative caused
many agencies to become concerned with how much it would cost to go through all of these animal
tests and document each chemical (Abbott 1). Due to this reason, many began to implement the new
alternatives that were presented to many agencies. These different types of alternatives all stem from
in vitro procedures. In vitro testing uses cells that are cultivated in a lab to form different tissues for
scientists to test. For example, the different

The Effect Of Ph On The Function Of The Enzyme Amylase
Discussion Effect of pH on the Function of the Enzyme Amylase
The objective of the lab was to examine the effects of environmental variables on the functions of an
enzyme. To the point, an experiment was conducted to test the effect of pH on the function of the
enzyme Amylase. Enzymes are proteins that act as catalysts and help reactions take place. In short,
enzymes reduce the energy needed for a reaction to take place, permitting a reaction to take place
more easily. Some enzymes are shape specific and reduce the energy for certain reactions. Enzymes
have unique folds of the amino acid chain which result in specifically shaped active sites (Frankova
Fry 2013). When substrates fit in the active site of an enzyme, then it is able to catalyze the reaction.
Enzyme activity is affected by the concentrations of the enzymes and substrate present (Worthington
2010). As the incidence of enzyme increases, the rate of reaction increases. Additionally, as the
incidence of substrate increases so does the rate of reaction. Almost all enzymes need specific
conditions for them to function. The conditions include temperature, pH level, and concentration of
salt. Enzymes have optimal conditions. If they are changed, the enzyme may denature and deactivate.
If that happens, the enzyme would not be able to catalyze the reaction, and the reaction rate would
decrease (Worthington 2010). Amylase is a digestive enzyme. The enzyme is found in the salivary
glands in your mouth

According to Assail (2004), Culture is a set of socially acquired values that society accepts as a whole
and transmits to its members through language and symbols. As a result, culture reflects a society s
shared meanings and traditions . The culture manner has to contact with the factors influencing the
choice in product depending to the kind of lifestyles and background the consumer is from so David
should buy the car which would be having all the Features which he wants and the price should
intersect his income range respectively. Secondly, majority of people working in companies on
manager posts uses the car which had these types of features in it, because the companies are far away
from their homes so they want a comfortable drive; this shows a society s shared meaning and
tradition as said by Assail 2004. This car can also be used as a family car because it is four seated and
everyone living with the family wants to buy a four seated car because of their family members.
Another factor that can affect this consumer behaviour would be his personal characteristics such as
his personal life style, age and occupation, which can also be expressed by (Kotler 2010). In David s
case, these factors would relate firstly to his occupation. As a Manager, he has a limited purchasing
power by which price is important factor for him, by considering this point he can t buy any car which

Color-Blind Racism
Sociologist define race as a socially defined category based on real or percived biological differnces
between groups of people . In the 19th century biologist came up with the three different categories
that groups the three human races: Mongoloid, Causasoid and Negroid. They belived that different
races where charaterized by biological makeup. But modern sciences have proved that theory to be
wrong because there is no such thing as a pure race. We are 99.9% genetically idenitcal. Race is just a
concept humans made up, it isn t actually real.
A minortiy group is the percentage of a ethnic group in a certain area. While dominate culture stay
dominant even if thy are technically the minorty, people of color are still considered to be minorties.
Sociologists define a minority as a group of people that are different from others in the same society
by race, nationality, religion, or language. A minortiey group is a social group that is systematically

Notions of Selflessness in Sartrean Existentialism and Theravadin Buddhism
ABSTRACT: In this essay I examine the relationship between Sartre s phenomenological description
of the self as expressed in his early work (especially Being and Nothingness) and elements to be found
in some approaches to Buddhism. The vast enormity of this task will be obvious to anyone who is
aware of the numerous schools and traditions through which the religion of Buddhism has manifested
itself. In order to be brief, I have decided to select specific aspects of what is commonly called the
Theravadin tradition as being representative of Buddhist philosophy. By choosing to look primarily at

Secondly, Buddhism is a religion of many sects which differ from each other in various manners. By
choosing to look primarily at the Theravadin tradition, I am by necessity ignoring the viewpoints of a
vast number of schools which are considered Buddhist in nature. In my view, the Theravadin sect
presents a consistent Buddhist philosophy which is representative of many of the major trends within
Buddhism.
Sartre s method for explaining his position on the self is the phenomenological one, utilized before
him by Husserl and Heidegger. Phenomenology may be defined as the descriptive analysis of
subjective processes. It differs from psychology in that while psychology sets up causal or genetic
laws to explain subjective processes, phenomenology merely describes. Sartre points out the
intentionality of consciousness (a process earlier described by Husserl and Brentano). Consciousness
is always consciousness of something. For Sartre, there exist non conscious beings independent and
external to consciousness. This realm of non conscious beings is referred to by Sartre as the in itself
while consciousness is referred to as the for itself.
The in itself appears to consciousness and is the object of consciousness, but is transcendent in the
sense that it is external to consciousness. Consciousness is not only

Evaluating The Theories Of Learning Essay
This paper was chosen because it is significant to evaluate the theories of learning taught by very
important psychologist, and the different ways they can be applied to life. It is also noteworthy to state
that the techniques of these theories differ from one psychologist to another. Correspondingly, this
author believes there are several ways that people can be reinforced in the process of learning. This
lesson covers the definition of learning, different types of learning, and, also, discusses learning styles.
Furthermore, the author will similarly focus on illustrating and describing how individuals can apply
the latter in a biblical aspect. Ultimately, after reading this paper, the reader should have a better
insight into the process of learning in which an individual experiences permanent, lasting changes in
knowledge, behaviors, and ways of processing the world. Significant Theories of Learning Fact:

Patriarchal Theory Of Domestic Violence
Social Learning Theory In many ways, the differences between men and women in elements of
domestic violence reflect Social Learning Theory. Family violence during childhood years is a
contributing factor to being an adult in a domestic violence situation as either the perpetrator or the
victim (Swan, 2008). Social expectations of men can lead to less men reporting abuse or accessing
treatment programs for victims. It is possible for male victim to have shame or embarrassment due to
stereotypical judgments on masculinity.
The traditional expectation that women are compliant and submissive may play a role in domestic
violence differences. Societies view on women being weak, vulnerable, and easily exploited

Interpersonal Violence is amongst one of the violations these behaviors can contribute to. Verbal and
physical abuse is harmful behaviors that can be experienced. The conceptualized past, future, and self,
gain power over behavior which contributes to inflexibility. Emotions and thoughts are commonly
used as reasons for actions, giving person psychological inflexibility. This could play a part on why
perpetrators use excuses such as, it s your fault, jealousy, and assumptions etc. as reasons for abuse.
Victims also use the inflexibility as excuses for not seeking help such as it s my fault, I shouldn t have
done or said something, or any excuse to protect their partner. People lose contact with what they want
in life, beyond relief from psychological pain. Patterns of action emerge and gradually dominate in the
person s repertoire that is detached from long term desired qualities of living. Behavioral repertoires
narrow and become less sensitive to the current context as it affords valued actions. Persistence and
change in the service of effectiveness is less likely.

Essay William Golding s Lord of the Flies
William Golding s Lord of the Flies
The first chapter of the novel, The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding is effective in establishing
the characters, concerns and language for the remainder of the book, as well as introducing the main
themes of the novel; that the problems in society are related to the sinful nature of man and good
verses evil. In Golding s first chapter, the main characters are introduced, we see many ominous signs
of what s to come through the authors choice of language and the beginning of rivalries, issues and
concerns are portrayed which are to continue throughout the rest of the book. The microcosm on the
Island is presented from an early stage, as well as themes that emerge and remain important

These qualities Golding describes Ralph to have in this first chapter, and incredibly important for the
remainder of the novel.
It is no surprise that Piggy s nickname is such. When Golding introduces the character, he has just
come out of the bushes, after suffering from diarrhoea through eating too many unripe berries. The
author continually relates to the fact that the boy is fat, and in many descriptions, Golding blatantly
says this such as The fat boy looked startled . As we progress through the early pages, we learn more
of Piggy s appearance through the conversation between Piggy and Ralph. I ve been wearing specs
since I was three . With these continual descriptions, we are able to obtain a vivid and detailed image
of this fat boy. The specs that Piggy wears are a symbol of his intelligence that is to be superior to the
other boys. Individuals that wear glasses have always been considered to be intelligent and smart, and
Piggy is no exception to this. His constant attempts to unite the group of boys under the laws of the
conch are to try to establish the same society of that in the old counties and of what they are used to.
Piggy is not a natural leader he has the brains, but not the courage. We can see this when Golding
describes the boys reaction to the loud and bossy Jack: He shrank to the other side of Ralph...and
secure from the other side of Ralph, he spoke timidly . Many

Everything That Rises Must Converge By Flannery O Connor
The coolest monkey in the jungle Sounds like a harmless phrase you d see or hear with anything
aimed towards young children, right? What may just seem like a playful expression, can be seen in a
completely different way with just one change. Skin tone. This simple adjustment can cause your
situation to go awry in a matter of seconds if you aim it at the wrong person. When used towards an
african american person, it quickly turns into a highly offensive racial slur. H M is a very popular

O Connor even shows the severity of the possible outcomes resulting from people who choose to be
racist and treat others differently by having the mother be killed when she gave the small black boy a
penny. At that point in time everything she had done had caught up to her, the way Julian put it spoke
the best, That was the whole colored race which will no longer take your condescending pennies .
Julian disliked his mothers views and you can Throughout the story Julian s mother repeatedly
claimed I know who I am , and that this is why she knew her place in this world. Yet, she did not
really understand who she was at all. It was obvious from the beginning that her bringing up had
caused her to see racial segregation as necessary, and that the whites truly were a higher class. She
was a very closed minded person that saw herself as a gracious being when she was nice to the African
american community. It should feel good to be nice to people, but it will never make you a superior
being to do something that is expected of you. Being sensitive and having understanding of how your
actions may make people feel shows your compassion for others, and Julian s mother severely lacked

Tax Exempt Status Of Credit Unions
Tax exempt status of credit unions is at risk!
COLLAPSE
Credit unions have been a staple in the United States since 1909 and were instituted to provide
affordable credit to working class families. They are member owned, not for profit, and report to a
volunteer board of directors. Credit unions are federal income tax exempt and have been since 1934
when the Federal Credit Union Act granted the status due to being a cooperative that operates by and
for the members. There are Over 96 Million hard working Americans that choose to bank with credit
unions over the larger banks. Earlier this year members of the U.S Congress considered passing a tax
reform that involved reversing the tax exempt status of credit unions. This will not ... Show more

The National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU) commissioned a study to examine what
would happen to the U.S. economy if the presence of credit unions was reduced significantly as a
result of eliminating the credit union tax exemption. The authors of the study are Robert Feinberg,
Ph.D., Professor of Economics at American University; and Douglas Meade, Ph.D., Director of
Research at Interindustry Economic Research Fund, Inc. Previous studies had demonstrated that
changes to the credit union tax status in Canada and Australia led to a severe reduction in credit union
presence. The resulting reduced competition for consumer financial services led to higher interest rates
on consumer loans and lower interest rates on deposits for consumers in those countries. The results of
the 2014 study indicate that similar impacts on consumers would be seen here in the United States
should the credit union tax exemption be eliminated. Some of the key findings are Removing the
credit union tax exemption would actually cost the federal government $15 billion in lost income tax
revenue over the next 10 years. Gross Domestic Product would be reduced by $148 billion, and 1.5
million jobs would be lost over the next decade as well. The total benefit to U.S. consumers from the
presence of credit unions in financial markets was $153 billion over the nine year period of the study,
or $17 billion per year. (NAFCU 1) Taxing credit unions only results in costing the

Descriminalization Of Women In The Beauty Industry
Women in the interwar years did not experience greater freedoms in terms of their physical
appearance because they remain restricted by societal notions of femininity. The new women physical
appearance was created by society for their own benefits. The new women wear makeup and dress
less, drink and smoke. The beauty industry first started as a woman only business and expanded but
later on became male dominated. Cosmetic makeup was first thought of as a less respectable beauty
product because during those time the only prostitute wears it. It was seen and associated with
seduction. Since women such as Elizabeth Aiden, Helena Rubensein who focus on white women
beauty product, and Annie Turnbo Malone, and Sarah Breedlove (Madam C.J. Walker) focused on
African Americans women beauty products (505). Women made the beauty industry their world. They

They put a lot of emphasis on this two quality, and anyone outside this can either try to achieve this
quality or they are not considered beautiful (507). They wanted women to remake themselves. This
where the issue of body image started because many women started to think they are not physically
appealing because they are not society ideal women or at least have society ideal quality (507).
Women started doing their hair a new way to look like the flapper that is seen in the ads. The beauty
industry had such a hold on women that during the Great depression it was one of the companies that
were flourishing because they were selling beauty product at a low affordable cost that was irresistible
(507). This was building a lot of insecurity about physical appearance which leads to short or long
term psychological effect on women. Women started trying to fix their imperfection because the
beauty industry was using their insecurity to make false promises (507). Black women especially did

Essay about A Sorrowful Woman by Gail Godwin
In a world usually depicted as a man s world, a woman s role is not considered as significant and thus
can be repressed. It is why a feminist perspective or criticism comes into place, especially in literature.
By definition, a feminist criticism consist of scrutinizing the ways in which literature reinforces the

  • 2. Wasps Research Paper When one considers important events in US history, things like the American Revolution, the Westward Expansion, or the Civil Rights Movement come to mind. One in particular that I find compelling, is the creation of the Women Airforce Service Pilots better known as WASPs, during World War II. I find it interesting because prior to this time and after this period, woman had a very limited social status. But for a brief time in the 1940s, women achieved not only job equality but went above and beyond what society expected in many areas. The WASPs were one such group who broke barriers in more ways than one. America s future appeared to gleam brightly for most Americans when Herbert Hoover was inaugurated president in 1929. However, a great ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was a short bubble of equality and opportunity for women one not available before this time, and not present again for many years to come. While the WASPs represent equality in the military work force, they also represent something greater: Women following their passions and dreams. Anything is possible! If you dream it and you believe it, you can do it. Do your homework, dream your dreams, be true to yourself and someday, with hard work and persistence, you too can fly wingtip to wingtip with any pilot, in any plane, anywhere! These woman led by example by following this and achieving goals. Some one so bold and bright like Jacqueline Cochran ought to have been recognized immediately after her incredible success. She will never be forgotten for, she did so much to make her dream a reality. I found my interest in the WASP program very easily, because I have always dreamt of being a pilot. I wanted to learn more about where it all began, and I m glad I did. The experiences Cochran and the Wasps fought for made it possible for me to follow my destiny. To have such motivation and endurance to excel in something you believe in, is so powerful and can really change the outcome for not just one but ... • 3. Analysis Of The Poem Ode Of Spring By John Keats Essay In the poem Ode to Autumn by John Keats, my initial thoughts of this work is how the author does a beautiful job describing the season. The way that he makes his words come to life. The poem makes you feel as if you are right there in the midst of autumn. As I read through the poem, it was as if I could inhale the autumn air. I think the thing that I loved most about this piece is the mere fact that it is my most favorite season of the year. When the poem talks about the songs of spring, it tells you to think not of them. In other words, this is the season of autumn and it too has its own songs to sing. We shouldn t rush through this amazing season, but yet slow down and enjoy each moment that it brings us. The Romantic relationship of nature and soul communicated in one of two ways. The landscape was, on one hand viewed as an expansion of the human identity, equipped for sensitivity for man s enthusiastic state. On other hand, nature was viewed as a vehicle for soul just as man; the breath of God fills both man and the earth (Hanson, 2015). Keats stood out in the early nineteenth century Romanticism, a development that embraced the sacredness of emotion and creative energy and privileged the magnificence of the natural world (John Keats, n.d.). In the attempt of bringing old ways to gain new knowledge John Keats wrote the Romanticism style poem, Ode to Autumn . With the many literary devices available to the Romantics, poetry was the most favored (Keats, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Puritan Citizen In The Scarlet Letter By Nathaniel Hawthorne Throughout the novel The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne develops compelling characters that are starkly different from the normal Puritan citizen. The novel mainly focuses on Hester, a Puritan woman living in New England, and the story of her affair and how it affects her life and the lives of those around her. Puritan citizens are illustrated as stern, dreary characters, but Hawthorne brings up sin, love, and hate even in the characters who are seemingly the most rigid when it comes to Puritan lifestyle. Chillingworth, Hester, and Pearl of the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne display complex character traits, including admiration, honesty, and loneliness. Hester s daughter, Pearl, has distinct characteristics that make her a major character in this novel. In the text, Hawthorne reveals that Pearl feels isolated from society, and has to go through any struggles in her life alone. The singularity lay in the hostile feelings with which the child regarded ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Chillingworth admires Hester for her great qualities. He says that she could have met a better man and lived a better life if this sin and evil had not taken place and can see that her good qualities were wasted when she married him. As a result, Chillingworth empathizes with her because the attributes he loved about her have transformed due to her punishment physically and mentally. • 8. TO WHAT EXTENT WAS THERE A “MID TUDOR CRISIS” DURING THE... TO WHAT EXTENT WAS THERE A MID TUDOR CRISIS DURING THE REIGNS OF EDWARD VI AND MARY I? The mid Tudor crisis is a term often used by historians to describe the reigns of Edward VI (1547 1553) and Mary I (1553 1558). This period can be seen as a crisis, due to the fact that there were so many problems financially, socially, religiously and constitutionally, which led to rebellions, and placed the country in a very unstable position. It is clear that many of the origins of this crisis have their roots in the reign of Henry VIII. He left a very difficult legacy to his successors, but it must be remembered that Somerset provoked the problems already in existence and Northumberland and Mary I then had the difficult task of resolving them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Northumberland also established the Privy Coffer to provide contingency funds. Mary herself reformed the customs and introduced the book of rates in 1558. There was also, as Guy perceives a shift towards national finance . Although the period 1552 8 is still described as a crisis, it must be remembered that there were some productive reforms and that the situation did not decline. Historians such as Pollard who see government as sterile, impotent and unproductive at this time do not seem to have taken into account these positive financial developments. It is evident that Henry was at the root of the financial problems and that Somerset exacerbated them. However the positive achievements of Northumberland and Mary must not be forgotten. Somerset lacked charm and made enemies easily. His arrogance and pride created resentment. He was a weak administrator who refused to listen to the experts. The crisis came for Somerset, in 1559 when he failed to deal decisively with rebellions in the west and in Norfolk (which had been partly caused by his own policies). As Dale Hoak points out his colleagues decided to get rid of him at this point not because he supported the poor but because he was incompetent . There are vast clouds of gas, light years across, each taking on its own dazzling shape and color. In our solar system alone, there are planets asteroids, comets and moons. For millennia, humans have attributed the workings and beauty of the cosmos to the divine. Slowly, we learned that laws governed the motion of these celestial bodies, laws which would come to be known as the laws of physics. It was not a god that was making the planets orbit the sun, but gravity. Through observations, mankind learned of new laws, and discarded old ones that no longer matched the observations. At around the same time Dicke and Peebles were making this prediction, in 1965, two physicists at the Bell Telephone Laboratories in New Jersey, Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson, were receiving a lot of microwave interference with their equipment (Hawking 55). They had a very sensitive microwave detector, and were receiving this interference no matter where they pointed the detector. They eventually concluded that the interference was everywhere, and from outside the atmosphere, and extremely uniform. It was the same no matter what time of day, or year. This meant the microwaves they were detecting were originating from outside of the solar system, and even the galaxy (Hawking 55). It was eventually realized that this microwave background was the same that Dicke, Peeples, and Gamow had predicted. Penzias and Wilson had found the glow of the Big Bang. In 1992, COBE (Cosmic Background Explorer satellite) was able to find slight variations in the microwave background. This meant that the early universe was not completely even, allowing matter to clump together and structures to form such as galaxies (Hawking 56). According to the Nuclear Energy Institute, ...as of November 2016, 30 countries worldwide are operating 450 nuclear reactors for electricity generation and 60 new nuclear plants are under construction (Nuclear Energy Institute, 2016). Not only has nuclear power seen use across the world, but it has seen applications in the United States and right here in Florida. Currently, there are two facilities operated by Florida Power and Light (FPL) in the Sunshine State that produce over 3,000 megawatts of energy homes, public buildings, and businesses alike (Florida Power and Light, 2016a). However, these plants are hundreds of miles away from Volusia County (located near the major metropolitan areas of Port St. Lucie and Miami) and their benefits cannot be reaped by citizens in the county due to this distance. With successful nuclear plants already in operation within the state, why should Volusia County not try to acknowledge the possibility of such a project? Fossil fuels, as is widely known, are exhaustible resources that cannot possibly sustain humankind s energy needs ad infinitum. Nuclear energy provides a way to wean our population off natural gases, not necessarily overnight, but over the course of years or decades. Volusia does have the space, and the St. John s River provides an excellent water source to take advantage of for cooling the towers necessary to sustain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The sound of his rubber soled shoes tapping against the rocky floor snapped me out of my embarrassment and my cheeks returned to their usual pale color. • 19. The International Commercial Arbitration Process The International Commercial Arbitration process is a means whereby disputes related to businesses involving transnational parties are resolved by using arbitrators instead of taking the matter through a judicial system in the courts. The arbitration process requires that there is an agreement between the parties involvd. This agreement is brought forward by an agreement clause that is usually found in the business contract agreement and decision made is binding (Moses M 2012). According to UNCITRAL, arbitration is an internationally recognized process. A commercial arbitration is one that deals with matters arising as a result of relationships caused by commercial nature regardless of whether it is contractual or not. This arbitration process is preferred by many due to various reasons; the litigation in a court that is foreign is times very expensive ,time consuming and can lead to the development of adversarial relationships between the parties, the arbitration awards by the tribunal are recognized internationally for about 140 countries worldwide abide to the terms of Convention on Recognition and enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards of 1958 also known as the New York convention and the arbitration panel is composed of arbitrators who are chosen by the parties involved. Evolution Of The Female Professional Statistics Evolution is something that has occurred since the beginning of time and as the decades go on, evolution continues to occur throughout various aspects of life. One of these prominent spectrums is the work place. While women have not always blossomed in the business world, the female professional statistics have begun and continued to increase as time has. Although there is more gender equality amongst several companies, the numbers aren t necessarily where they should be. According to an article by Warner, women make up 50.8% of the population, only 14.6% of those women hold executive positions in the workplace. Even less are top earners and less than 5% are Fortune 500 CEO s. The numbers continue to drop for women of color as only 11.9% hold positions at the manager level (Warner, 2014). And according to the article by Kranc (2014), ...although women make up 19 percent of director positions within the S P 100, they represent only 8 percent of the highest paid executives (Kranc, 2014). These numbers provided by Warner are proof that there are still problems regarding the growth of women in the corporate world, especially when the women are of a minority background. Then she was transferred to the home of her husband where she was to fulfill her principal function, the bearing and rearing children. Medea shows the inequality of women in Greek society. We scratch and save a dowry to buy a man?Our lives depends on how his lordship feels. For better for worse we can?t divorce him. (p.8, Medea). Jason?s chauvinist beliefs are put under the microscope. Jason airs his views about what all women want: If they?re (women) happy in bed, they?re happy everywhere . By comparing Medea?s pure feminism to Jason?s selfish chauvinism, Euripides brokers sympathy and support for feminism from the audience. Have you ever wondered what goes in to make sure that cosmetics and medicine isn t lethal? A majority of ensuring items such as medicine and cosmetics are safe to use is done by testing the medicine and cosmetics on a multitude of different kinds of animals (Abbott 1). Animal testing saved many lives in the past ( Animal , par.7) but as science bred new methods, much like in vitro, which uses human cells cultivated in a lab, the potential for a replacement to animal testing arose (Abbott 1). If the animal shows any irritation or damage, it is possible to decide whether or not the chemical is permissible to use in consumer products. Experiments such as these are performed to test whether or not items like mascara are safe for humans to use depending on the reaction of the animal (Abbott 1). Many of these experiments require hundreds of animals to get a clear result (Abbott 1). As animal testing progressed throughout history, health organizations and industries started the initiation of alternative tests, which involve a number of different approaches that do not involve animals. Finding alternatives to testing with animals wasn t a main priority for many, until the European Union initiated a program called REACH, which stands for Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals (Abbott 1). This initiative required European countries to document the 30,000+ chemicals that are used in experiments to measure the safety of cosmetics and medications. Issuing this initiative caused many agencies to become concerned with how much it would cost to go through all of these animal tests and document each chemical (Abbott 1). Due to this reason, many began to implement the new alternatives that were presented to many agencies. These different types of alternatives all stem from in vitro procedures. • 29. The Effect Of Ph On The Function Of The Enzyme Amylase Discussion Effect of pH on the Function of the Enzyme Amylase The objective of the lab was to examine the effects of environmental variables on the functions of an enzyme. To the point, an experiment was conducted to test the effect of pH on the function of the enzyme Amylase. Enzymes are proteins that act as catalysts and help reactions take place. In short, enzymes reduce the energy needed for a reaction to take place, permitting a reaction to take place more easily. Some enzymes are shape specific and reduce the energy for certain reactions. Enzymes have unique folds of the amino acid chain which result in specifically shaped active sites (Frankova Fry 2013). When substrates fit in the active site of an enzyme, then it is able to catalyze the reaction. Enzyme activity is affected by the concentrations of the enzymes and substrate present (Worthington 2010). As the incidence of enzyme increases, the rate of reaction increases. Additionally, as the incidence of substrate increases so does the rate of reaction. Almost all enzymes need specific conditions for them to function. The conditions include temperature, pH level, and concentration of salt. Enzymes have optimal conditions. If they are changed, the enzyme may denature and deactivate. If that happens, the enzyme would not be able to catalyze the reaction, and the reaction rate would decrease (Worthington 2010). Amylase is a digestive enzyme. The enzyme is found in the salivary glands in your mouth ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The vast enormity of this task will be obvious to anyone who is aware of the numerous schools and traditions through which the religion of Buddhism has manifested itself. By choosing to look primarily at the Theravadin tradition, I am by necessity ignoring the viewpoints of a vast number of schools which are considered Buddhist in nature. Sartre s method for explaining his position on the self is the phenomenological one, utilized before him by Husserl and Heidegger. Phenomenology may be defined as the descriptive analysis of subjective processes. It differs from psychology in that while psychology sets up causal or genetic laws to explain subjective processes, phenomenology merely describes. Sartre points out the intentionality of consciousness (a process earlier described by Husserl and Brentano). Consciousness is always consciousness of something. For Sartre, there exist non conscious beings independent and external to consciousness. The National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU) commissioned a study to examine what would happen to the U.S. economy if the presence of credit unions was reduced significantly as a result of eliminating the credit union tax exemption. The authors of the study are Robert Feinberg, Ph.D., Professor of Economics at American University; and Douglas Meade, Ph.D., Director of Research at Interindustry Economic Research Fund, Inc. Previous studies had demonstrated that changes to the credit union tax status in Canada and Australia led to a severe reduction in credit union presence. The resulting reduced competition for consumer financial services led to higher interest rates on consumer loans and lower interest rates on deposits for consumers in those countries. The results of the 2014 study indicate that similar impacts on consumers would be seen here in the United States should the credit union tax exemption be eliminated. Some of the key findings are Removing the credit union tax exemption would actually cost the federal government $15 billion in lost income tax revenue over the next 10 years. Gross Domestic Product would be reduced by $148 billion, and 1.5 million jobs would be lost over the next decade as well. The total benefit to U.S. consumers from the presence of credit unions in financial markets was $153 billion over the nine year period of the study, or $17 billion per year.
