Themes In Barn Burning
Symbols and Themes in Barn Burning and To Build a Fire
The short stories Barn Burning by William Faulkner and To Build a Fire by Jack London are, on
their surface, two very different tales. While Barn Burning tells the story of a young boy, Sarty,
trying to grow and develop his own moral code among his twisted father whom the boy doesn t
agree with, but follows because he is his blood, To Build a Fire tells a story of a man trekking alone
on YukonTrail in miserable, dangerous weather that he is ill prepared for. When presented this way,
these stories seem to have nothing significant in common. Regardless of their drastically different
plots, characters, and settings, they nevertheless have very similar symbols and themes, ... Show

It is something that is now vital and is now being used as a tool rather than a weapon. The
protagonist, who is unnamed in the final publication, but was referred to as Vincent in earlier
drafts, relies on fire heavily and cannot use it irresponsibly, as any misuse will be detrimental to his
life (London, 559). This is interesting, as fire most often represents danger, like in Barn Burning, but
in To Build a Fire , demands respect, as it is the only source of hope against the enemy, which is, in
this case, nature.
Additionally, in both stories, there s a similar theme of running, but, again, it symbolizes two
contrasting ideas. In Barn Burning, the reader can see that the Snopes family is running away from
the law, and, later, Sarty is running away from his family, which both have contrasting meanings
themselves. When the family runs away, it is to selfishly avoid the negative consequences
associated with Snopes s actions; however, when Sarty runs away, it is to make the right choice
for himself rather than ...stick[ing] to his own blood (Faulkner, 232). Sarty decided the best choice
was to abandon his family, and is confident about this decision, never looking back. Conversely,
Vincent, the protagonist in To Build a Fire runs away less literally. While the reader is not given
any indication to why exactly he is enduring this dangerous trek other than to meet up with friends
camping an unspecified distance down the trail. However, one has to wonder what

Plentifu Mark Twain s The War-Prayer
Realism and naturalism are both basic yet cynical views of life and humanity that arose during the
trials and turmoil of the 19th century. Both views stripped away the layers of romanticism to
present a natural or real viewpoint of the work. These forms of writing refuse to idealize or praise
the subject while also avoiding artificial, fantasy, or mystical elements. In American literature, the
term realismrefers to writings that depict the realistic, everyday life of an average, middle class
individual. It portrays concrete reality closely and more emphasis is placed on the character and
his purpose rather than the plot and action. Word choice and diction used by realists are common
vernacular and the events that take place are plausible. The characters and plots are often based
around factual events and people, and it aims to show a truthful representation of reality. Realism
began around the start of the Civil War and lasted until the turn of the century a time of exponential
growth for the United States. With this growth came increasing rates of literacy which provided a...

Twain impeccably employs realism in a way that powerfully and effectively expresses his
objective message. He opens this story in the setting of a Sunday morning church congregation
celebrating the war and praying for safety, strength, courage, and well being of the soldiers as they
go into battle. The preacher prays blessings over the arms and that in the spirit of love God grant
the victory. Throughout this story, Twain illustrates realism not only through the language and
dialect he portrays, but also the representations of the characters. The reader can easily visualize
being in the congregation due to the realistic pride being portrayed by the American people and the
common speech used during the prayer dialect that any individual would hear while in a church

Dehumanism In Huckleberry Finn Essay
Controversy
The United States is known for its prosperous upbringing in becoming the richest country in the
world. The countries implementation of a democratic system where all men are created equal is
widely recognized as part of American history. In a short period of time the U.S. has represented
itself as a powerful and important figure in the world, however its history of transporting people
from Africa to the colonies and enslaved greatly stains its reputation. Categorizing the African
slaves utilizing derogatory references as a form of dehumanizing them. American literature like

Discrimination still exist with ongoing negative consequences with the n word as the focal point
relating to the acts of racism producing uneasiness towards adults and student. Making alternatives
towards the book be inevitable to combat negative description towards African Americans.
Despite the usage of the n word authors like David Bradley argues that preserving the n word
provides a teachable moment. Bradley further states that The Adventures Huckleberry Finn is a
power tool . From the statement Bradley introduced demonstrate how sentimental the novel is
towards the United States which before was rooted in the institutionalization of slavery.
Furthermore the novels depicts the reality on the situation during that time period on the

literature, so they can see its place within the spectrum of literature and history. The novel having
parallel traits in terms of literature and historical factors is significant as it contributes

While reading Colin Beavan s No Impact Man, I had a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. One of
my underlying thoughts throughout the whole book was, Well damn, I am so sure I would
never, ever, be able to do most of this in my life. In all honesty, it at first made me feel kind of
bad about how I lived; it made me feel as though I did not do enough for the environmentand
thoughtonly of myself. The first thing that came to mindwhen I learned what this book was even
about was a short online quiz of sorts. The purpose of the quiz was to determine how many
planet Earth s we would need if everyone on Earth lived how I did. My result was that over five
planets would be needed. This made me think about how while I was using over five... Show more

My reaction to the title of this chapter was something along the lines of, Well he is doing it
obviously because he is a guilty do good liberal . I thought it was a really interesting thing that
Beavan is a liberal. Liberals are generally open to newer behaviors and opinions and are much
more likely to do things untraditionally. On the surface, Beavan appears to fit the precise
definition of liberal; there are not many things that go against the norm of society more than what
he did. Our values right now are mostly geared towards industrialization and entertainment,
meaning factories and electricity and television and food. Beavan, being the liberal he is, decided
he wanted to go against what people everywhere have been doing, and attempt to live with no
environmental impact. But I do not necessarily think his No Impact project was a liberal thing to
do. In fact, I think his choice was possibly the most conservative of conservative things anyone has
ever done in recent history. Beavan attempted to live as environmentally friendly as possible for a
year, even choosing to go without electricity. I can only think of one group of people that live in
modern times without electricity, the Amish. The Amish people are just about the most
conservative people, both politically and religiously but also more importantly environmentally, I
could possibly imagine. This thought made me question his background of a liberal as he made a
choice that has so much in common of one

Europe on the Brink of Change at the Turn of the 20th Century
Europe on the Brink of Change at the Turn of the 20th Century
By the turn of the 20th century Europe had undergone massive changes which had eventually
pushed it into war. The main forces behind these changes were
1. Nationalism
2. Militarism
3. Imperialism
4. Socialism
5. Alliances
6. Unification
These ideas and systems threatened the balance of power which caused a major war to break out.
Nationalism is the feeling of loyalty shared by a group of people united by same language, race and
culture; to express their loyalty to their nation, they attempt to unite themselves into a larger nation

The problem for the government of Austria Hungary was that they did not want to lose their power

Socialism is the general term for the political and economic theory that advocates a system of
collective or government ownership and management of the means of production and
distribution of goods. In Russia socialism was creating many problems such as bad harvests,
industrial strikes and the war with Japan in 1904, leading to economic difficulties and
confidence in the Tsar faltering. In 1905 Father Gapon led a peaceful demonstration to see the
Tsar hoping to alleviate the pressures on the working class. However, troops opened fire on the
group and many were killed or wounded. This sparked off a revolution so the government made
concessions, the Tsar promised working hours to be reduced and a Duma was created to hear the
working class grievances.
Socialism threatened the balance of power as each country needs its people to believe in their
leader, they also need the working class to be productive. Russia s working class lost faith in the
Tsar after the Duma was dissolved and the promises made by the Tsar were broken.
Because of the collective nature of

Therefore, the plague narrative also serves a function of demonstrating who Yahwehis to His own
people. Israel must also know Yahweh as we see in Exodus 10:2. Throughout the narrative, we
see many allusions to the Egyptian gods and the impotence of these gods before God of Israel.9
There are multiple gods in the Egyptian temple. As an example, in the first plague, the Nile
River was turned into blood. The river was an important source of fertility to the land of Egypt.
Thus, it was dedicated to many gods (Osiris, Hapi, Sepek etc.) of the Egyptians.10 By turning the
river into blood, it eloquently reveals the power of Yahweh and the inferiority of Egyptian gods.
For the Egyptians who looked to various gods associated with the Nile, this event would have
produced many questions for their faith. Even the magicians had to acknowledge in the third
plague that it is the finger of God as they could not replicate it (Exod. 8:19). As for the Israelites,
the plague narrative is a reminder of the mighty and awesome power of God who had chosen them
and kept His promise. A reminder that would help to strengthen their faith in Him.
Each plague brings deeper knowledge and understanding of Yahweh. They are not simply acts of
judgment, but something that God uses to reveal Himself. Because they are more than just
punishments, they fail to actually secure Israel s release each time. As signs , they are used to

86 Aeromedical Staging Facility (ASF)
From the years 1995 through 2003, I was an Air Force medic stationed in Germany. For the first
five years I was an Airman at the 86 Aeromedical Staging Facility (ASF). Our mission at the ASF
was to transport patients back and forth from the flight line as they traveled to and from their
medical appointments from their assignments across Europe and sometimes over the Atlantic
Ocean to various Medical Treatment Facilities (MTFs) located in the Continental United States
(CONUS). Our daily operations were fairly routine and all of the technicians knew their
assigned roles well whether they were driving a vehicle, transporting luggage or caring for
traveling patients. ASF operations were fairly routine, even mundane, until 26 June 1996, a
terrorist blew up a dorm filled with Air Force personnel in the Middle East called Khobar Towers.
Building 131 of Khobar Towers was a housing complex in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia that was used to
billet American Forces rotating through the region in support of Operation Southern Watch (in
support of enforcing the no fly zone in southern Iraq). On Wednesday, June 26 1996, a fuel truck
laden with approximately 3,000 8,000 lbs of explosives was driven up to and parked approximately
80 feet from and detonated. Although the suspicious events that night alerted the building sentry

possibly led to feelings of false security and actions becoming complacent amongst American forces

Obesity Is A Disease Characterized By Excessive Body Fat
Obesity is a disease characterized by excessive body fat. People who are medically obese usually
are affected by behavior, genetic and environmental factors that are difficult to control with dieting.
Obesity increases the likelihood of certain diseases especially cardiovascular disorders and
diabetes. Obesity has become a pandemic nowadays. In the Indian scenario, even with the growing
awareness about health and fitness, more than 3 percent (3 crores) of the Indian population is obese.
Our study aims to determine the association of BMIwith cardiac output, forearm and calf blood flow
in healthy young male adults. Our results are consistent with our hypothesis.
Cardiac output was found to be significantly more in obese subjects compared to overweight and
normal BMI group. Similar results were found in other studies too. Obese individuals have
expanded central blood volume. In addition, stroke volume and cardiac output are both increased.
These changes in blood volume and cardiac output are most likely due to the increased metabolic
demand that result from increases in both lean and fat mass. The large fat depots in significant
obesity produce a low resistance vascular circuit that may further increase cardiac output. There
may also be changes in renal absorption of salt and water. The combination of these factors is
proposed to produce a form of volume overload which can give rise to high output failure later.

Another study revealed that obese patients demonstrated

Women in Tennessee Williams A Streetcar Named Desire and Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman
The part of Stella and Linda are both archetypal female figures in that they follow the typical
fictional role of the submissive wife and mother. In A Streetcar Named Desire, Stella DuBois
(renamed Mrs.
Stanley Kowalski) supports and forgives her husband, defending him against any criticism.
Likewise, in Death of a Salesman, Linda the only female character with any import is a meek, timid
figure around her husband. This weakness is underscored by the sentence structure and diction that
each character uses when in conflict with their husband. As both Tennessee Williams and Arthur
Miller are men, it can be seen that their female ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is possible that many men desire this sort of unconditional support and forgiveness who ever
wants to be blamed for their mistakes and behavior but it is unrealistic to show a woman who
tolerates this action even to the point that they end up hurting their husband, or another character.
Linda s blindness leads indirectly to Willy s suicide, and Stella s unwillingness to open her eyes to
Stanley s actions ends with Blanche being taken away to a mental institution.
Both of these characters also forgive their husbands in spite of their abuse, and back down during
any conflict. Stella in scene 3 is hit by
Stanley; during the poker scene he gives a loud whack of his hand on her thigh. All that Stella does
in reproach is say, That s not fun,
Stanley. During scene 8, Stanley yells at both Stella and Blanche:
What do you two think you are? A pair of queens? Stella s reaction is only to cry weakly , asserting
her inferior position to Stanley.
Linda s problem is verbal abuse. Willy continually yells at her for simply trying to talk: Will you

Ethics And The Natural Environment
Ethics are according to BusinessDictionary.com, The basic concepts and fundamental principles of
decent human conduct. It includes study of universal values such as the essential equality of all
men and women, human or natural rights, obedience to the law of land, concern for health and
safety and, increasingly, also for the natural environment (Ethics, 2015). For entrepreneurs, ethics
are a large portion of the decisions that are dealt with every day. People do not go out into the
world saying I am going to be a lying, conniving, unethical person. People may have the best of
intentions but when they are faced with the temptation of money, it can be difficult stay true to
those intentions. This is especially when unethical decisions do... Show more content on

For instance, if an entrepreneur needs further funding to keep their business from failing but their
lack of funding makes investors uncomfortable, they can be in a dilemma. It is easier if they lie
and tell investors the funds they need are for a new project. The chances are they would get the
funding faster than if they were honest and explained that they needed it to stay afloat. Since the
entrepreneur is so attached to their company, they often would do anything in order to keep it
alive. Time is another cause for temptation. The ethical choice is not just usually the more
difficult one, it is frequently the one that takes more time. Sometimes it is because they need to
meet that deadline, or get a shortcut to a goal. Patience is not as common in this world as it
should be. It is grueling for some entrepreneurs to wait while their company grows and develops.
Ethical decisions are not always enormous business altering decisions. If fact, the most common
unethical practices are practically unnoticeable. According to Entrepreneur.com, there are five
mistakes that entrepreneurs make regularly. They include, 1. You snuck a few personal expenses
through the business. 2. You hired that person because you just liked him more. 3. You shipped a
product to a bigger customer ahead of a smaller one. 4. You charged a customer a ton of money
for only 15 minutes of work. 5. You poached an employee from a friendly competitor (Marks,

hand held remote which features massage programs such as pulsating or complete vibration. The

was that the complete vibration is extremely relaxing. However, on these older mats, the overall

The Course of human events has once again arrived at a time when consideration must be given by
the people to dissolving the political bonds connecting them with another, and to again assume

The Potential for a Severe Food Shortage in the United States
A severe shortage of food in the United States could occur from many causes. Farms could stop
growing crops and breeding animals. Some sort of bacteria could sweep through the country
killing different food plants. The more important part of the shortage of food however would not
be the causes, but the effects. The stance of the country s economy, the well being of middle and
lower class families, and the quality of stores that used to sell the products would all decline greatly
if an event as severe as an extreme shortage of foodwere to occur. General stores generate a large
profit from the sale of food. Some stores like Whole Foods and King Soopers do not sell much
besides food products. If there were to be a severe shortage of food, stores like Whole Foods,
Walmart, Costco, and King Soopers would take a severe hit in terms of income and the ability
to compete with other stores. Places like these would not be able to keep up financially if there
were a lack of people buying their food products. There are other non food products that these
stores may sell, but these other products would not be able to sell due to the fact that people
would be focusing more on ways to get food rather than buying a new T.V. or a new pair of shoes.
Families in cities rely on general stores and health food stores to obtain food products. A severe
shortage of food throughout the country would raise potentially difficult questions for families.

Anne Bradstreet s To My Dear And Loving Husband
Who is Anne Bradstreet? Anne Bradstreet, originally known as Anne Dudley, was a poet born
in 1612. She was married at the tender age of 16, to a graduate of Cambridge University, by the
name of Simon Bradstreet. Bradstreet and her husband would eventually raise eight children
after migrating with her family too, Ipswich, Massachusetts. There she began to write English
verse poetry, that her brother in law would transport back to England without her knowledge.
One of the many poems written by Bradstreet was, To My Dear and Loving Husband , a short
poem that allows the speaker to confess her undying love, value and appreciation for her
husband. To My Dear and Loving Husband is a happy and uplifting poem that leaves its readers

The Nude Kenneth Clark Analysis
The first chapter in Kenneth Clark s The Nude makes a powerful assertion about the nude as a
symbol of the classical tradition. As opposed to a naked image, the nude (at least in its academic
context) lacks the discomfort associated with a naked body. Instead in the classical era, the nude
portrayed the ideal body one which embodied the sensuality of human form, the rationality of
mathematics, and the divinity of God in relation to man. In this way the nude became a key
development in the classical era and then again in the Renaissanceperiod as an expression of how a
human ought to live; of an ideal human condition and even more importantly an ideal human form.
Clark s argument delineates the manner in which the nude developed in its form throughout the
history of art, pointing out its seemingly dynamic nature and its relation to the values of the
societies in which it prevailed as an art form. He points out that despite some curious
transformations, [the nude] remains our chief link with the classic disciplines (2). It appears that
the nude as an art form carries a much deeper significance than the nude as a human form. Rather
than just a depiction or replica of one s body, the nude takes into account an idealistic version of
what a body ought to be. But what exactly is this idealistic form, and how has it changed in its
representation? Clark demonstrates that the nude has changed in its manifestations, particularly
among three periods: The Classical era; the

John Brown s Life And Life
John Brown came from a line of men who were passionate about their convictions. In 1620, Peter
Brown, a passenger aboard the Mayflower and signer of the Mayflower Compact, began the
Brown legacy in America (Weiser). John Brown s grandfather, his namesake, was a captain in the
Revolutionary War when he lost his life to dysentery while fighting for his beliefs in 1776. He left
behind his wife and ten children, including his five year old son, Owen Brown.
When his father died, Owen Brown s family suffered. Without any help, the family s crops failed
that year, and they were forced to sell their cattle. The family tried to maintain their farm, but the
fierce winter the next year made things even more difficult; most of their remaining ... Show more

Owen Brown continued this pattern, but once he turned nineteen, he met Ruth Mills, a reverend
s daughter. Their biggest similarity was the importance of religion in their lives; they were both
devout Calvinists. Calvinism is a division of Protestantism. Calvinists believe that people are
naturally selfish and unwilling to follow God. They also believe in predestination, or that God
has already chosen who is going to be saved, and there is nothing one can do to alter that decision.
This focus on religion was passed down to the couple s children, and would prove a defining factor
in John Brown s life.
Another event that shaped Owen Brown s views on slavery occurred in the 1790 s. In the 1770 s, a
minister had traveled to Connecticut, and he had brought his slaves with him. The man returned to
the South for a while, leaving his slaves behind. When he returned to retrieve his slaves, they would
not return with him. This act of defiance led to a public hearing where the minister defended the act
of slavery. Brown found his arguments unsettling, and became an abolitionist (Horn, 18). In 1793,
Owen Brown and Ruth Mills were married and they remained in Norfolk, Connecticut. They then
had a son, Salmon, who died before he turned two. After this disappointment, the two moved to
Torrington, Connecticut and had their second son. In his autobiography, Owen Brown wrote, In

Off Road Driving Maintenance
Off Road Driving Maintenance
Off road driving should be treated differently from city driving. Maneuvering in uneven and dirt
roads can be quite tough on your vehicle. Most drivers often push their cars to the limit when they
are driving off road. It helps them gauge how far they can stretch their vehicle.
In this case, you should always perform regular maintenance check ups on your car. After all, it is
more prone to wear and tear and constant exposure to heat, dirt, and other road contaminants can
cause your car parts to deteriorate faster.
Doing regular inspections on your car will allow you to address any new issues as soon as possible.
This makes it safer for you to travel on or off road.

paper touches on what needs to be done about the police brutality across the nation, and if the
issue can be stopped. The paper examines court cases involving police brutality including the
media buzzed case of Rodney King. The case is further examined and includes the community s
reaction to the beating of Rodney King. Another case is covering Frank Jude Jr. severely beaten

Due to film making becoming more of a business than about the art, companies are not willing to

based on 25 movie reviewers, this is one of the highest rating a film has been given on this

When we look at the broadcasting of the film Shame we can see that the film was premiered at the

the film gained a lot of press from the fact that Michael Fassbender won the best actor award at
the Venice Film Festival as well as being nominated for many other awards including a BAFTA

Iago And The Devil In Othello
The Disgruntled Ensign A depraved soul would generate chaos, inflict pain, and stir up trouble

focus of this academic essay. Our antagonist is an astounding piece of work. He pleads
indifference despite dedicating his entire existence for revenge. His wounded pride fueled the

them from salvation s path. Lucifer tempts us to commit sinful deeds. Likewise, Iago persuaded
Othello to asphyxiate Desdemona and murdering an innocent soul without a valid excuse is one
of the grievous sins. Beelzebub adorns misdeeds in the eyes of transgressor s. Iago equally
disguised Othello atrocity as a last resort to restore his dignity, Emilia s theft as an opportunity to
gain his admiration, and Cassio s approach of a married woman as a reasonable prospect to clear
his name. This analysis demonstrates that our antagonist is the embodiment of evil which destroyed

To determine the effects of gamma radiation in inducing mutation on the growth of corn (Zea
mays), an experiment using corn seeds exposed in to different rate of radiation (0kr, 10 kr, 30 kr,
and 50 kr) was done. Four treatments were prepared using 10 seeds from each of the following
different radiation rates. The seeds were planted and were observed for seven weeks. The percent
germination and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Theoretically, the control should have the highest percent germination rate, but since errors which
can be attributed from the environment as well as from other physical factors are present, results
obtained cannot be avoided. The treatment with the highest irradiation rate (50 kr) has the lowest
rate of seed germination. However, in Table 2, results indicated that treatment under the former has
the highest percent mortality rate (100 %) while the lowest obtained by the control treatment (40%).
In Figure 1, results obtained showed that the treatment with highest average plant height was under
Treatment 10 kr. The final average plant height under this treatment was 28.58 cm compared to the
25.98 cm of control, 20.87 of 30 kr and 6.04 of 50 kr. Again, theoretically, the control should have
the highest average plant height but results showed otherwise.
Through the obtained data, it can be concluded that exposing seeds to radiation can induce mutation
which in the end could affect the growth rate, germination rate as well as the mortality rate of the
plant. Observations and data obtained showed that the rate of radiation is inversely proportional to
the percent germination and height of corn plants thus proving that percent germination and height
decreases as amount or

This type of subtle stereotype is easily pointed out when looking at this ad because the first thing
you notice is a big breasted, scandalously dressed women lying down. The woman is lying under
the man, which gives the negative message of women being less important or worthless when it
comes to her male counterpart. Mock assaults by men over this woman could be said in a
variety of different ways. Men could say she s dressed like a slut, looks like she puts out, has a
nice rack, or a variety of other insults. Woman being portrayed as less important then men and
objects of insults can only lead our youth in the wrong direction. Women in general, no matter
what age, are left to feel inferior or just degraded when it comes to comparing them to males.
The lying down gives women the feeling of being below males in the overall outside viewpoint,
and being the object of male mock assaults gives them the feeling of embarrassment, which can
only lead to mental pain. In conclusion, the ads overall message is that if you are a well dressed
man with alcohol, all you have to do is stand over the most attractive of women and she will be
instantly attracted. This message clearly shows the stereotype of women being dominated by men
while being seduced at the same time, which is a common stereotype that has been used

What is sacred space?
Upon hearing the words sacred and space together, you may be inclined to think of a place of
sanctity; spiritual spaces that invite prayer, worshipping of the divinities or a place built for
peace and harmonious gatherings. Why were these spaces created? In the past, human beings
believed that sacred spaces were an imperative method to reaching out to their divine gods and
religions, as a link between mortal and god. These spaces have some relation Heidegger s concept
of the four fold: the idea of creating and implementing spaces that link to the earth, sky, mortals
and divinities. He believed that this bridge is a thing of this sort. The location allows the simple

Of course, with different cultures and religions in different countries, many sacred spaces have
varying visual forms and purposes; a circle of freestanding stones may not look similar to the
Lotus Temple in India, but they may share some form of spiritual tranquility. The Pantheon,
however, is a building that has no clear purpose as a sacred space, although it is rumored to have
been a temple due to the style of the decorations. One thing for certain was the fact that it had been
built in order to have some link to the divinities and the sky, hence Pantheon meaning honor all
gods in Greek. The dome of the Pantheon had been built with near perfect hemispherical geometry,
something that human beings consider divine tier and something that they strive for when creating
sacred space: the perfect geometry. Rudolf Wittkower argues that natural creations, such as the
proportions and symmetry of the human frame, the relationships between planets or the intervals of
musical harmony, seemed to follow geometric ratios, and that if the products of architecture were to
possess the same conceptual integrity they too should be designed using perfect figures, symmetry

The Accounting Standards Board ( Iasb ) And The...
Since 2007, both the Financial Accounting Standards Board (IASB) and the International
Accounting Standards Board (IASB) have been collaborating on a unified project pertaining to the
creation of a new accounting standard for insurance contracts. Currently, no international
accounting standard exists under the International Financial Reporting Standards(IFRS), as they
tend to follow the guidance of U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). However,
the standards proposed by both boards differ slightly. In June 2013, the FASB issued an Exposure
Draft, Proposed Accounting Standards Update: Insurance Contracts (Topic 834) that strayed
slightly from the IASB s Exposure Draft Insurance Contracts also issued in June 2013. Initially, the
FASB introduced a model with a scope including not only insurance entities but also noninsurance
entities that issued insurance contracts. Nevertheless, the FASB s goals in the alternation of
insurance accounting have diverged further from its initial convergence efforts with the IASB after
the FASB voted in a board meeting on February 19, 2014, to narrow the focus of the insurance
contracts project to pertaining solely to insurance entities, which is the same scope as current U.S.
GAAP. The FASB was pressured by insurance entities, professional accounting organizations
, and
other financial statement users to reduce the scope of its exposure draft on insurance accounting or
to specify which entities would fall under the control of the

Consumer Behavior Handbook
Consumer Behavior Booking.com Understanding and acting upon consumer behavior is at the core
of becoming a successful retailer. Today s business environment is packed with competing firms, all
seeking to convenience customers to choose them over their competitors. Many industries, such as
the soda, cell phone, and washing detergent industry are dominated by a just a few or a sole firm.
Therefore, more than ever it is difficult to intervene in the habitual consumption of most consumers.
A consumer s buying process is what must be closely analyzed by any existing or new firm that is
trying to become competitive in today s business environment. A customer will have both utilitarian
and hedonic needs. Often companies will attempt to merge these two types of needs to create an all
encompassing experience. For example, the Wegmans store experience doesn t only satisfy the
utilitarian need of purchasing groceries, it also provides stimulation (an aspect of satisfying
hedonic needs) through visuals and well organized displays. Paying attention to such details and so
creating a multi dimensional experience creates a competitive advantage. Perhaps the most radical
change in consumer behavior happened when the new era of internet began and the way customer s
search for information and evaluate alternatives changed almost instantly. Today customers face the
challenge of being overwhelmed by information rather than not being able to access it. The internet
has also revolutionized

School Motivation And Learning Strategies Inventory
School Motivation and Learning Strategies Inventory
Introduction
The School Motivation and Learning Strategies Inventory (SMALSI) is a self report tool
designed to determine student performance across a comprehensive set of behaviors
representing learning strategies, academic motivation, and test taking. This inventory is unique
in that it is designed especially for use with school aged youth. There are two forms: a Child
Form for students aged 8 12 years, and a Teen Form for students aged 13 18 years. Both forms
consist of over 100 items written at a third grade reading level, which should take from 20 30
minutes to complete. The SMALSI can be administered individually or to a group; the form also
can be read to students who have difficulty reading. The SMALSI is intended for use in both
general and special education for the purposes of: (a) screening to facilitate identification of topics
for group instruction; (b) prereferral intervention, which may ameliorate learning difficulties and
avert the need for special education; (c) special education assessment, which is linked directly to
intervention in areas that may exacerbate academic difficulties; and (d) research related to
understanding the nature of these skills and to the development of effective interventions for
learning strategies, test taking, and academic motivation.

Smoking Has Changed Through The Years
Smoking has greatly changed through the years. However, if one thinks about, it does smoking
control society in a particular way, or does society control the view on smoking. Through time, one
can discover that there are many examples that may explain this question.
People in the 1960 s thought smoking was considered cool at the time and it was the thing to do.
Many people saw smoking as a symbol of statuses, such as being a hard worker or even an office
worker. It showed that one had class because you were a refined person with a good paying job
(White, Cameron,Oliffe, Bottorff). In many cases, smoking was considered beautiful for a women
to smoke, in addition to her daily beauty routine. It was also associated with a strong, hardworking,
and handsome man who all the woman would try to get a date with.
Many people were misled by the cigarette companies who claimed that their cigarettes were easy
on the throat. The cigarette companies labeled the cigarette cartons with a picture of a man in a
white lab coat that represented a doctor. They also printed on the cartons that they asked your
doctor if it was ok to smoke, but in reality, they did not (Gardner, Martha, Brandt). This marketing
scheme worked very well to mislead people in believing that cigarettes were healthy for you.
Since people see Doctors as intelligent people and are professionals in their respective field and
studied medicine for years, people believe them undoubtedly.
The media was very successful in

Organizational Culture And Its Impact On Business Success...
Organisational Culture and its Impact on Business Success and Employee Performance
Organisational or corporate culture is a broad concept. In the recent past this concept is widely
studied and researched. One study, reference cited in Tsai (2011), refers Organizational culture to
the values and norms that have existed in a company for many years, and to the beliefs of the
people and the perceived value of their work that will dominate their mindsets and behavior. It is
reasonable to assume that organizational culture has a significant impact over an organisation s
different force. Organisational culture is an important driver of the success of a business. It is a
philosophy that can lead a company s policy towards people and clients. This essay begins mainly
focusing with organisational culture, its elements and importance and how it is formed, then it will
find out about organisational structure which can be a platform of organisational cultures to form
and lastly it will briefly discuss the view of power in this substance and the impact of employee s
performance.
Organisational culture:
Organisational culture consists of the standards and inferential practices with an organization. In
this modern business era, businesses are too concerned about the competitions and therefore every
well known company wants to keep a well structured, well maintained organisational practice.
Organisational culture has been defined differently as days past. The most frequently used

Otto Von Bismarck-German Unification-Nationalism
Otto von Bismarck German Unification
Nationalism and liberalism were two popular political philosophies of the late 19th century.
Nationalism is the aspiration of a people with a common language, culture and traditions to be
unified. Nationalism grew into a movement after 1815, influenced by literature, music, politics and
economic developments between the northern Germany states. By 1848, nationalism was strong
among Germans, but the course to unify German would prove to take time.
Between 1815, the end of the Napoleonic Wars, and 1850 the German states experienced a growth
of nationalism and the desire for unity. The obstacles to German unification were religious
divisions, rulers fear of losing power, and the opposition from Austria. The tension and rivalry that
existed between the two largest German states intensified and the existing religious divisions and
made the possibility of unification more difficult.
While the religious division of the Prussia Protestant and that of the dominating Austria Catholics
was an important factor, the opposition from Austria and the rulers were more important.
Nationalism became this progressively intensifying cycle that eventually climaxes into war. Many
began to put aside the idealistic ideas of society and began to embrace the realities of society as
competitive and combative. Under the calculated guidance of Otto von Bismarck, Germany would
finally be on the promising path of unification.
Plans for unification started long

Three Mile Island Accident Study
1.Introduction
Based on the NRC (1), the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant is a commercial nuclear plant
where has two nuclear reactors (TMI 1 and TMI 2). General Public Utilities Corporation built the
power plant and Metropolitan Edison Company ran and managed the plant. TMI 1 and TMI 2
reactors were pressurized water reactors; and their generated power were 802 MWe and 906
MWe respectively. TMI 2 had an accident on March 28, 1979, particularly, the reactor was melted
and radioactivity was released to the outside of plant. Fortunately, there was no detectable effects on

The mechanical failure got the pilot operated relief valve stuck, meanwhile the relief valve status
showed in the control room was closed. Consequently, the coolant flowed out of reactor core
through valve; and the temperature of reactor core was rising.
Because the information provided by the system was inadequate, so that operators did not know
the water level. As a result, they assumed that the water level was high in the reactor core and did
not realize that the reactor was experiencing losing cooling water. The coolant pumps was switched
off to protect themselves from the acute vibration. Furthermore, operators cut down the supply of
emergency cooling to the reactor core. These series of action did not relieve the hazard, but made
reactor into the dangerous situation. As a result of these actions, the reactor core suffered with
overheating. Moreover, there was a crack on the zirconium cladding that was a cover for the
nuclear fuel pellets. It led to that the nuclear fuel pellets starting to melt and flow out from the
crack. Fortunately, the building where place the TMI 2 did not have any break, so it prevented
workers and surrounding from strong and direct radioactivity.
3 hours later than the feed water pumps stopping working, the operators just realized that the
reactor core had melted because of abnormal core temperature. Even though some operators did not
believe the temperature reported by the control system. After 15 hours 50 minutes from the fault

Croup: A Common Upper Respiratory Tract Infection Introduction Croup accounts for 15% of
clinic and ED visits for an upper respiratory tract infection and is the most common cause of
acute stridor. Most often croup occurs in children ages 6 36 months of age but can be seen in
older children up to age 6. Males are more prone to croup than females. Croup usually occurs in
early winter and presents to the ED from 10:00PM to 4:00AM. Hospitalizations from croup
usually are between 2 5% with 1% of those children requiring intubation and .5% of those
intubated dying. Complications are rare but it is important to identify the treat these patients

a foreign body is high on the list of differentials. The findings on an x ray show subglottic
narrowing also known as the steeple sign. In epiglottitis swelling is present also known as the
thumb sign, but in croup the epiglottis will be normal. Lab tests are of limited use unless it is a
more severe case. Usually it is not required to determine the etiology of the croup. Treatment of
croup is based on Westley croup score described above. Mild croup can be treated at home for
symptom control with humidity, fever reduction, and oral fluids. Exposure to cold air or
humidifiers may help to decrease the cough symptoms. Parents should be advised of the signs of
respiratory distress and be called back in 24 hours to assess the status of their child. Patients in an

Essay On Marc Ching
12 people? Secret Police? And low and behold a Daily Mail reporter? The same Daily Mail that
Marc Ching declared tabloid liars when they exposed The Man Who Risked His Life To Save

Is any of it true? Amazingly his followers will believe every word Marc Ching claims is true
without the slightest bit of evidence, but disregard any other stories because they claim it s all
circumstantial or worst yet Fabricated for some unknown reason.
When the Daily Mail story claimed that 700 of the 1,000 Marc Ching saved dogs, actually died.

Marc Ching seems to constantly leave out a great many details that I believe are crucial for people
to make their choices on whom to donate their money to. With each story, these lack of details is
reinforcing our belief that they are intentional rather than just an oversight.
But with each story, we write we are discovering an all too common thread woven into Marc
Ching character and that is the ability to lie and evade about what really transpires in reality, which
if confirmed would have a tremendous impact on how he is judged by his fanatics.
Marc Ching has an almost Jekyll and Hyde like on camera/off camera personality. Even if there is a
lack of evidence, the idea of handing over thousands of dollars in donations to a dog breeder,
making him more wealthy and supplying him the capital to expand his horrific trade seems
disgusting at best and would contradict everything Ching claims to

He further states that this type of learning procedure is more reassuring for children who wants to
know what is taking place in an activity, task or routine.
Consequently, research carried out by Ahissar, (2004) has also suggested that many children learn
better when they have pictures to help them. This is as a lot of children are visual learners, which
means they learn by seeing things rather than listening. This resource hence assists children who
may suffer from anxiety which is mostly due to them being new to the setting or them not being
able to understand routines. Lewalter, (2003) has stated that a visual routine is required as many
children learn better when they are supported with photographic images, this is as they tend to
mainly be visual learners. Therefore, visual routine can maximise a child s strengths to develop in
areas that they find more difficult.
This resource as a result links to the Early Years Foundation Stage, (EYFS) (2008). The area of the
EYFS that this creative resource address is Communication and Language development. as it
supports and encourages children to develop literacy and language skills. Furthermore, it is widely
supported by Gandin, (1995) who has also specified that children are seen as naturally visual
learners, and therefore by offering information to them in a

The Enlightenment Ideas Of The American Revolution

The Enlightenment s ideas in the American Revolution People in America were mad and broke.
The colonies did not like the idea of paying high taxes to the King of England. In order to show
their rage and anger, they did it by not paying taxes. The King of England was frustrated by the
colonist s action and send an army to the Americas to sort this problem out. However, the people of
America wanted to be free from England, so with the help of the Enlightenment thinkers and the
philosophers, they started an attack to the English soldiers. That is how the war with England
began and it is known as the Revolutionary War. The American Revolutionwas influenced by the
ideas which was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was a great time for the scholars and philosophers to introduce democracy and justice through
deliberations of liberty and equality. One of the most well known philosopher, Thomas Hobbes,
is known for his political thoughts. He is a kind of a guy that thinks about how people could
actually live their life ignoring the conflicts happening around them. He believes that people
have their own right to do whatever they desire by not what they are told to do. He also believes
that a system of governing should be an individual person rather than a group from a foreign
country asking them to do as they pleased. In order for him to do that, he wrote a book. His book
is called Leviathan . In that book it is stated that people are incapable of ruling themselves, primarily
because humans are naturally self centered and quarrelsome and need the iron fist of a strong
leader. Hobbes was not more effective than following philosophes like Voltaire, Montesquieu, and
Rousseau. They were more confident about democracy. Their ideas were straight to the point and
they support questions that were negatively viewed about absolute monarch. For example,
Montesquieu proposed a concept about the separation of powers into different district of
government. They also find willing students who are tempted to fight for liberty. The ideas of the
Enlightenment helped lead to the American Revolution and

Somnambulism
Charles Brockeden Brown introduces a short thriller story that grasp the attention of the readers not

protagonist. Throughout the short story, Brown manages to invent a suspenseful tone that intrigues
the reader through the idea of psychoanalysis and the constant questioning of Althorpe character as
a whole. In the short storythat explains itself, Somnambulism is described to correlate sleepwalking

In Althorpe dreams he believes he is protecting Constnaie from an assassin set out to kill her and
defends her by killing it. The way he describes it would only lead the readers to the conclusion
that he actually commited the murder. I was summoned, methought, to defend this lady from the
attacks of an assassin. My ideas were full of confusion and inaccuracy. All that I can recollect is,
that my efforts had been unsuccessful to avert the stroke of the murderer. This, however, was not
accomplished without drawing on his head a bloody retribution. I imagined myself engaged, for a
long time, in pursuit of the guilty, and, at last, to have detected him in an artful disguise. I did not
employ the usual preliminaries which honour prescribes, but, stimulated by rage, attacked him
with a pistol, and terminated his career by a mortal wound. (Brown Pg 7) Viewing his dream from
a psych analysis standpoint, you can understand that Althorpe is trying to interpret him killing
Constanie Davis in a more fictional event for him to believe. However, when he wakes up he
seems to deflect the dream and make it into just a dream. This manipulation inside his head lets the
reader assume the psychological reasoning to his sleep walking throughout his

Eating Disorders Are Serious Disorders
Eating disorders are serious disorders that have a negative impact on both the psychological and
the physiological well being of the afflicted (Welch, Ghader, Swenne, 2015). Studies concerning
eating disorders are showing more and more frequency in younger age groups and especially in
those who are athletes, diabetics, and obese adolescents (Martin Golden, 2014). This tells us that
symptoms of eating disorders can be caught and treated during adolescence. Today, many schools
have very little class time dedicated to educating students about healthy lifestyles. Little, to no
information is given about what eating disorders are or how to avoid the development of one. If
information is provided about the prevention of eating disorders, it is usually in the form of a
video or discussed briefly in a textbook. Schools are not doing enough in the fight against the
development of eating disorders. Many studies have shed some light on the issue of eating
disorders by conducting surveys and developing new programs to use in schools. The primary
prevention of eating and body image problems among young people, and in particular, adolescents,
is emerging as one of the most desirable achievements in contemporary health and nutrition(O Dea
J. , 2000). Primary prevention programs, and better education in general, for the prevention of
eating disorders and promotion of healthy lifestyles needs to be established in schools. The
purpose of this paper is to propose more education

Mann Gulch Fire Case Study
Two different fires took place in two different decades, yet they were eerily similar to each other.
One was in Mann Gulch and one was on Storm King Mountain. Both of these fires became
disastrous because there was a collapse of sense making and things were no longer working for
the people involved. The people did not know what to do or where to turn, and thus where unable
to make sense of what was going on. In this essay I will compare the two fires not only with
themselves, but also with one of Lencioni s dysfunctions. I will then propose a solution based on
Lencioni s recommendations that could have helped the team in Mann Gulch apply some structure
and make sense of what was really happening. The firein Mann Gulch took place on August 5,
1949 (Weick, 1993, p. 628 652). That day, a lightning storm passed over Mann Gulch; the fire

Dodge saw that the fire was coming towards them, he told them to turn around. Eventually they
were instructed to drop their gear and make a run for it (Weick, 1993, p. 628 652). When the fire
got closer, Dodge knelt down and lit the grass on fire with a match in order to burn the grass
around him so that he and the others would have a safe zone, or technically an escape fire. He
then told the other smoke jumpers to get into the fire with him, but they refused and kept running.
All except two of them died. The other survivors were Walter Rumsey and Bob Sallee. They had
managed to survive by sliding into a more rocky area at the top (A E Television Networks, 2002,

Anthrophysiology Of Stress
Stress is what happens when the body responds to a threat. When the brain feels that the body is
being threatened or the brain feels pressure the brain causes the nervous system to release stress
hormones and awakens or alarms the body to create stress. Stress can also be explained as when
you are mentally or emotionally strained or tired from difficult or very demanding tasks.
Another way to define stress is when you feel as though something or someone is making you
feel like everything is very hard to overcome. Stress can create various threats such as raising
blood pressure, can cause stomach aches, shut down the immune system or slow it down, and it
can also put you in more risk or either having a stroke or a heart attack in a later period... Show

Once the body feels as though you are being approached with a challenging situation the adrenal
gland produces this hormone which then goes to the adrenal cortex and then that causes your brain
to be notified of this act of stress and causes your brain to react to it, this process with the adrenal
gland can react in just seconds. The adrenal glands are located in the area where the kidneys are
they are actually connected and after the Adrenal glands there is the adrenal cortex which is what
makes the signal go to your brain to make you feel stressed.
Adrenaline
Adrenaline is a hormone that is created in the adrenal glands especially in a condition of stress,
increasing the rate of the blood s circulation, breathing and is preparing the body or the bodies
muscle for exertion (exertion also known as preparing for a stressful or a very difficult decision
or a difficult task). Adrenaline may be also explained as an exhilarating feeling when you feel as
though you are at the edge often felt when either one is very happy, or a very stressed unreal
feeling when you are very tensed by a certain scenario.
What Causes Body Temperature to Change
There are many reasons why one s body temperature can either rise or decrease but some of the
reasons that have been searched for, they may be strange but true. One example is if you were to

  • 2. Themes In Barn Burning Symbols and Themes in Barn Burning and To Build a Fire The short stories Barn Burning by William Faulkner and To Build a Fire by Jack London are, on their surface, two very different tales. While Barn Burning tells the story of a young boy, Sarty, trying to grow and develop his own moral code among his twisted father whom the boy doesn t agree with, but follows because he is his blood, To Build a Fire tells a story of a man trekking alone on YukonTrail in miserable, dangerous weather that he is ill prepared for. When presented this way, these stories seem to have nothing significant in common. Regardless of their drastically different plots, characters, and settings, they nevertheless have very similar symbols and themes, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is something that is now vital and is now being used as a tool rather than a weapon. The protagonist, who is unnamed in the final publication, but was referred to as Vincent in earlier drafts, relies on fire heavily and cannot use it irresponsibly, as any misuse will be detrimental to his life (London, 559). This is interesting, as fire most often represents danger, like in Barn Burning, but in To Build a Fire , demands respect, as it is the only source of hope against the enemy, which is, in this case, nature. Additionally, in both stories, there s a similar theme of running, but, again, it symbolizes two contrasting ideas. In Barn Burning, the reader can see that the Snopes family is running away from the law, and, later, Sarty is running away from his family, which both have contrasting meanings themselves. When the family runs away, it is to selfishly avoid the negative consequences associated with Snopes s actions; however, when Sarty runs away, it is to make the right choice for himself rather than ...stick[ing] to his own blood (Faulkner, 232). Sarty decided the best choice was to abandon his family, and is confident about this decision, never looking back. Conversely, Vincent, the protagonist in To Build a Fire runs away less literally. While the reader is not given any indication to why exactly he is enduring this dangerous trek other than to meet up with friends camping an unspecified distance down the trail. However, one has to wonder what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Plentifu Mark Twain s The War-Prayer Realism and naturalism are both basic yet cynical views of life and humanity that arose during the trials and turmoil of the 19th century. Both views stripped away the layers of romanticism to present a natural or real viewpoint of the work. These forms of writing refuse to idealize or praise the subject while also avoiding artificial, fantasy, or mystical elements. In American literature, the term realismrefers to writings that depict the realistic, everyday life of an average, middle class individual. It portrays concrete reality closely and more emphasis is placed on the character and his purpose rather than the plot and action. Word choice and diction used by realists are common vernacular and the events that take place are plausible. The characters and plots are often based around factual events and people, and it aims to show a truthful representation of reality. Realism began around the start of the Civil War and lasted until the turn of the century a time of exponential growth for the United States. With this growth came increasing rates of literacy which provided a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Twain impeccably employs realism in a way that powerfully and effectively expresses his objective message. He opens this story in the setting of a Sunday morning church congregation celebrating the war and praying for safety, strength, courage, and well being of the soldiers as they go into battle. The preacher prays blessings over the arms and that in the spirit of love God grant the victory. Throughout this story, Twain illustrates realism not only through the language and dialect he portrays, but also the representations of the characters. The reader can easily visualize being in the congregation due to the realistic pride being portrayed by the American people and the common speech used during the prayer dialect that any individual would hear while in a church ... • 4. Dehumanism In Huckleberry Finn Essay Controversy The United States is known for its prosperous upbringing in becoming the richest country in the world. The countries implementation of a democratic system where all men are created equal is widely recognized as part of American history. In a short period of time the U.S. has represented itself as a powerful and important figure in the world, however its history of transporting people from Africa to the colonies and enslaved greatly stains its reputation. Categorizing the African slaves utilizing derogatory references as a form of dehumanizing them. Discrimination still exist with ongoing negative consequences with the n word as the focal point relating to the acts of racism producing uneasiness towards adults and student. Making alternatives towards the book be inevitable to combat negative description towards African Americans. Despite the usage of the n word authors like David Bradley argues that preserving the n word provides a teachable moment. Bradley further states that The Adventures Huckleberry Finn is a power tool . • 5. While reading Colin Beavan’s No Impact Man, I had a bit of... While reading Colin Beavan s No Impact Man, I had a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. One of my underlying thoughts throughout the whole book was, Well damn, I am so sure I would never, ever, be able to do most of this in my life. In all honesty, it at first made me feel kind of bad about how I lived; it made me feel as though I did not do enough for the environmentand thoughtonly of myself. The first thing that came to mindwhen I learned what this book was even about was a short online quiz of sorts. The purpose of the quiz was to determine how many planet Earth s we would need if everyone on Earth lived how I did. My result was that over five planets would be needed. This made me think about how while I was using over five... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My reaction to the title of this chapter was something along the lines of, Well he is doing it obviously because he is a guilty do good liberal . I thought it was a really interesting thing that Beavan is a liberal. Liberals are generally open to newer behaviors and opinions and are much more likely to do things untraditionally. On the surface, Beavan appears to fit the precise definition of liberal; there are not many things that go against the norm of society more than what he did. Our values right now are mostly geared towards industrialization and entertainment, meaning factories and electricity and television and food. Beavan, being the liberal he is, decided he wanted to go against what people everywhere have been doing, and attempt to live with no environmental impact. But I do not necessarily think his No Impact project was a liberal thing to do. In fact, I think his choice was possibly the most conservative of conservative things anyone has ever done in recent history. Beavan attempted to live as environmentally friendly as possible for a year, even choosing to go without electricity. I can only think of one group of people that live in modern times without electricity, the Amish. The Amish people are just about the most conservative people, both politically and religiously but also more importantly environmentally, I could possibly imagine. This thought made me question his background of a liberal as he made a choice that has so much in common of one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Europe on the Brink of Change at the Turn of the 20th Century Europe on the Brink of Change at the Turn of the 20th Century By the turn of the 20th century Europe had undergone massive changes which had eventually pushed it into war. The main forces behind these changes were 1. Nationalism 2. Militarism 3. Imperialism 4. Socialism 5. Alliances 6. Unification These ideas and systems threatened the balance of power which caused a major war to break out. The Slavs in the southern part of the empire were their main concern since they wanted to join up to Serbia. Socialism is the general term for the political and economic theory that advocates a system of collective or government ownership and management of the means of production and distribution of goods. In Russia socialism was creating many problems such as bad harvests, industrial strikes and the war with Japan in 1904, leading to economic difficulties and confidence in the Tsar faltering. In 1905 Father Gapon led a peaceful demonstration to see the Tsar hoping to alleviate the pressures on the working class. However, troops opened fire on the group and many were killed or wounded. This sparked off a revolution so the government made concessions, the Tsar promised working hours to be reduced and a Duma was created to hear the working class grievances. Socialism threatened the balance of power as each country needs its people to believe in their leader, they also need the working class to be productive. Russia s working class lost faith in the Tsar after the Duma was dissolved and the promises made by the Tsar were broken.

Therefore, the plague narrative also serves a function of demonstrating who Yahwehis to His own people. Israel must also know Yahweh as we see in Exodus 10:2. Throughout the narrative, we see many allusions to the Egyptian gods and the impotence of these gods before God of Israel.9 There are multiple gods in the Egyptian temple. As an example, in the first plague, the Nile River was turned into blood. The river was an important source of fertility to the land of Egypt. Thus, it was dedicated to many gods (Osiris, Hapi, Sepek etc.) of the Egyptians.10 By turning the river into blood, it eloquently reveals the power of Yahweh and the inferiority of Egyptian gods. For the Egyptians who looked to various gods associated with the Nile, this event would have produced many questions for their faith. Even the magicians had to acknowledge in the third plague that it is the finger of God as they could not replicate it (Exod. 8:19). As for the Israelites, the plague narrative is a reminder of the mighty and awesome power of God who had chosen them and kept His promise. A reminder that would help to strengthen their faith in Him. Each plague brings deeper knowledge and understanding of Yahweh. They are not simply acts of judgment, but something that God uses to reveal Himself. Because they are more than just punishments, they fail to actually secure Israel s release each time. As signs , they are used to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For the first five years I was an Airman at the 86 Aeromedical Staging Facility (ASF). Our mission at the ASF was to transport patients back and forth from the flight line as they traveled to and from their medical appointments from their assignments across Europe and sometimes over the Atlantic Ocean to various Medical Treatment Facilities (MTFs) located in the Continental United States (CONUS). Our daily operations were fairly routine and all of the technicians knew their assigned roles well whether they were driving a vehicle, transporting luggage or caring for traveling patients. ASF operations were fairly routine, even mundane, until 26 June 1996, a terrorist blew up a dorm filled with Air Force personnel in the Middle East called Khobar Towers. Building 131 of Khobar Towers was a housing complex in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia that was used to billet American Forces rotating through the region in support of Operation Southern Watch (in support of enforcing the no fly zone in southern Iraq). On Wednesday, June 26 1996, a fuel truck laden with approximately 3,000 8,000 lbs of explosives was driven up to and parked approximately 80 feet from and detonated. • 10. Obesity Is A Disease Characterized By Excessive Body Fat Obesity is a disease characterized by excessive body fat. People who are medically obese usually are affected by behavior, genetic and environmental factors that are difficult to control with dieting. Obesity increases the likelihood of certain diseases especially cardiovascular disorders and diabetes. Obesity has become a pandemic nowadays. In the Indian scenario, even with the growing awareness about health and fitness, more than 3 percent (3 crores) of the Indian population is obese. Our study aims to determine the association of BMIwith cardiac output, forearm and calf blood flow in healthy young male adults. Our results are consistent with our hypothesis. Cardiac output was found to be significantly more in obese subjects compared to overweight and normal BMI group. Similar results were found in other studies too. Obese individuals have expanded central blood volume. In addition, stroke volume and cardiac output are both increased. These changes in blood volume and cardiac output are most likely due to the increased metabolic demand that result from increases in both lean and fat mass. The large fat depots in significant obesity produce a low resistance vascular circuit that may further increase cardiac output. There may also be changes in renal absorption of salt and water. The combination of these factors is proposed to produce a form of volume overload which can give rise to high output failure later. [24][25] Another study revealed that obese patients demonstrated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Women in Tennessee Williams A Streetcar Named Desire and Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman The part of Stella and Linda are both archetypal female figures in that they follow the typical fictional role of the submissive wife and mother. In A Streetcar Named Desire, Stella DuBois (renamed Mrs. Stanley Kowalski) supports and forgives her husband, defending him against any criticism. Likewise, in Death of a Salesman, Linda the only female character with any import is a meek, timid figure around her husband. • 19. The Potential for a Severe Food Shortage in the United States A severe shortage of food in the United States could occur from many causes. Farms could stop growing crops and breeding animals. Some sort of bacteria could sweep through the country killing different food plants. The more important part of the shortage of food however would not be the causes, but the effects. The stance of the country s economy, the well being of middle and lower class families, and the quality of stores that used to sell the products would all decline greatly if an event as severe as an extreme shortage of foodwere to occur. General stores generate a large profit from the sale of food. Some stores like Whole Foods and King Soopers do not sell much besides food products. If there were to be a severe shortage of food, stores like Whole Foods, Walmart, Costco, and King Soopers would take a severe hit in terms of income and the ability to compete with other stores. Places like these would not be able to keep up financially if there were a lack of people buying their food products. There are other non food products that these stores may sell, but these other products would not be able to sell due to the fact that people would be focusing more on ways to get food rather than buying a new T.V. or a new pair of shoes. Families in cities rely on general stores and health food stores to obtain food products. A severe shortage of food throughout the country would raise potentially difficult questions for families. • 24. The Nude Kenneth Clark Analysis The first chapter in Kenneth Clark s The Nude makes a powerful assertion about the nude as a symbol of the classical tradition. As opposed to a naked image, the nude (at least in its academic context) lacks the discomfort associated with a naked body. Instead in the classical era, the nude portrayed the ideal body one which embodied the sensuality of human form, the rationality of mathematics, and the divinity of God in relation to man. In this way the nude became a key development in the classical era and then again in the Renaissanceperiod as an expression of how a human ought to live; of an ideal human condition and even more importantly an ideal human form. Clark s argument delineates the manner in which the nude developed in its form throughout the history of art, pointing out its seemingly dynamic nature and its relation to the values of the societies in which it prevailed as an art form. He points out that despite some curious transformations, [the nude] remains our chief link with the classic disciplines (2). It appears that the nude as an art form carries a much deeper significance than the nude as a human form. Rather than just a depiction or replica of one s body, the nude takes into account an idealistic version of what a body ought to be. But what exactly is this idealistic form, and how has it changed in its representation? Clark demonstrates that the nude has changed in its manifestations, particularly among three periods: The Classical era; the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Owen Brown continued this pattern, but once he turned nineteen, he met Ruth Mills, a reverend s daughter. Their biggest similarity was the importance of religion in their lives; they were both devout Calvinists. Calvinism is a division of Protestantism. Calvinists believe that people are naturally selfish and unwilling to follow God. They also believe in predestination, or that God has already chosen who is going to be saved, and there is nothing one can do to alter that decision. This focus on religion was passed down to the couple s children, and would prove a defining factor in John Brown s life. Another event that shaped Owen Brown s views on slavery occurred in the 1790 s. In the 1770 s, a minister had traveled to Connecticut, and he had brought his slaves with him. The man returned to the South for a while, leaving his slaves behind. When he returned to retrieve his slaves, they would not return with him. This act of defiance led to a public hearing where the minister defended the act of slavery. Brown found his arguments unsettling, and became an abolitionist (Horn, 18). In 1793, Owen Brown and Ruth Mills were married and they remained in Norfolk, Connecticut. They then had a son, Salmon, who died before he turned two. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Theoretically, the control should have the highest percent germination rate, but since errors which can be attributed from the environment as well as from other physical factors are present, results obtained cannot be avoided. The treatment with the highest irradiation rate (50 kr) has the lowest rate of seed germination. However, in Table 2, results indicated that treatment under the former has the highest percent mortality rate (100 %) while the lowest obtained by the control treatment (40%). In Figure 1, results obtained showed that the treatment with highest average plant height was under Treatment 10 kr. The final average plant height under this treatment was 28.58 cm compared to the 25.98 cm of control, 20.87 of 30 kr and 6.04 of 50 kr. The woman is lying under the man, which gives the negative message of women being less important or worthless when it comes to her male counterpart. Mock assaults by men over this woman could be said in a variety of different ways. Men could say she s dressed like a slut, looks like she puts out, has a nice rack, or a variety of other insults. Woman being portrayed as less important then men and objects of insults can only lead our youth in the wrong direction. Women in general, no matter what age, are left to feel inferior or just degraded when it comes to comparing them to males. The lying down gives women the feeling of being below males in the overall outside viewpoint, and being the object of male mock assaults gives them the feeling of embarrassment, which can only lead to mental pain. In conclusion, the ads overall message is that if you are a well dressed man with alcohol, all you have to do is stand over the most attractive of women and she will be instantly attracted. One thing for certain was the fact that it had been built in order to have some link to the divinities and the sky, hence Pantheon meaning honor all gods in Greek. The dome of the Pantheon had been built with near perfect hemispherical geometry, something that human beings consider divine tier and something that they strive for when creating sacred space: the perfect geometry. Rudolf Wittkower argues that natural creations, such as the proportions and symmetry of the human frame, the relationships between planets or the intervals of musical harmony, seemed to follow geometric ratios, and that if the products of architecture were to possess the same conceptual integrity they too should be designed using perfect figures, symmetry and harmonic mathematical proportions (2009, ... Nationalism is the aspiration of a people with a common language, culture and traditions to be unified. Nationalism grew into a movement after 1815, influenced by literature, music, politics and economic developments between the northern Germany states. By 1848, nationalism was strong among Germans, but the course to unify German would prove to take time. Between 1815, the end of the Napoleonic Wars, and 1850 the German states experienced a growth of nationalism and the desire for unity. If information is provided about the prevention of eating disorders, it is usually in the form of a video or discussed briefly in a textbook. Schools are not doing enough in the fight against the development of eating disorders. Many studies have shed some light on the issue of eating disorders by conducting surveys and developing new programs to use in schools. The primary prevention of eating and body image problems among young people, and in particular, adolescents, is emerging as one of the most desirable achievements in contemporary health and nutrition(O Dea J. , 2000). Primary prevention programs, and better education in general, for the prevention of eating disorders and promotion of healthy lifestyles needs to be established in schools. • 53. Mann Gulch Fire Case Study Two different fires took place in two different decades, yet they were eerily similar to each other. One was in Mann Gulch and one was on Storm King Mountain. Both of these fires became disastrous because there was a collapse of sense making and things were no longer working for the people involved. The people did not know what to do or where to turn, and thus where unable to make sense of what was going on. In this essay I will compare the two fires not only with themselves, but also with one of Lencioni s dysfunctions. I will then propose a solution based on Lencioni s recommendations that could have helped the team in Mann Gulch apply some structure and make sense of what was really happening. The firein Mann Gulch took place on August 5, 1949 (Weick, 1993, p. 628 652). That day, a lightning storm passed over Mann Gulch; the fire started. There was a team of smoke jumpers led by Wagner... When the smoke jumpers landed on the ground, there was a wall of fire coming from the bottom of the gulch towards them. They hiked down into gulch in order to carry out their plan. However, when Dodge saw that the fire was coming towards them, he told them to turn around. Eventually they were instructed to drop their gear and make a run for it (Weick, 1993, p. 628 652). When the fire got closer, Dodge knelt down and lit the grass on fire with a match in order to burn the grass around him so that he and the others would have a safe zone, or technically an escape fire. He then told the other smoke jumpers to get into the fire with him, but they refused and kept running. All except two of them died. The other survivors were Walter Rumsey and Bob Sallee. They had managed to survive by sliding into a more rocky area at the top (A E Television Networks, 2002, Escape! Fire in Mann ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 54. Anthrophysiology Of Stress Stress is what happens when the body responds to a threat. When the brain feels that the body is being threatened or the brain feels pressure the brain causes the nervous system to release stress hormones and awakens or alarms the body to create stress. Stress can also be explained as when you are mentally or emotionally strained or tired from difficult or very demanding tasks. Another way to define stress is when you feel as though something or someone is making you feel like everything is very hard to overcome. Stress can create various threats such as raising blood pressure, can cause stomach aches, shut down the immune system or slow it down, and it can also put you in more risk or either having a stroke or a heart attack in a later period... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once the body feels as though you are being approached with a challenging situation the adrenal gland produces this hormone which then goes to the adrenal cortex and then that causes your brain to be notified of this act of stress and causes your brain to react to it, this process with the adrenal gland can react in just seconds. The adrenal glands are located in the area where the kidneys are they are actually connected and after the Adrenal glands there is the adrenal cortex which is what makes the signal go to your brain to make you feel stressed. Adrenaline Adrenaline is a hormone that is created in the adrenal glands especially in a condition of stress, increasing the rate of the blood s circulation, breathing and is preparing the body or the bodies muscle for exertion (exertion also known as preparing for a stressful or a very difficult decision or a difficult task). Adrenaline may be also explained as an exhilarating feeling when you feel as though you are at the edge often felt when either one is very happy, or a very stressed unreal feeling when you are very tensed by a certain scenario. What Causes Body Temperature to Change There are many reasons why one s body temperature can either rise or decrease but some of the reasons that have been searched for, they may be strange but true. One example is if you were to lie your nose heats ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
