In reality, of course, it s just the reverse. Clear, tough minded people are the most simple.
According to Tichy and Sherman (1993), Jack Welch saw reality objectively and consistently applied
this orientation. He was willing to face reality, even if it was different from that in the past: Facing
reality as it is, not as it was or as you wish ... facing reality is crucial in life, not just in business. You
have to see the world in the purest, cleanest way possible or you can t make decisions on a rational
basis.
As noted by Locke (2000), Welch was a problem finder, not just a problem solver. When he became
CEO in 1981, General Electric already was quite profitable, without obvious problems. He grasped the
reality that if the status quo continued GE eventually would decline, so he proceeded to transform the
company. Even during his final years at GE, Welch was not content to rest on his triumphs. Thrusts in
the 1990s included a massive quality program ( 6 sigma ), a push further into financial services, and a
string of acquisitions meant to give GE technological leadership in key industries.
A related aspect of Jack Welch s leadership was to set goals that seemed difficult or even impossible
(Locke, 2000). He required that every business in GE s portfolio be number one or two in its industry
in the United States, and later in the world as a whole. Steve Kerr of General Electric described the
GE stretch target as basically an

The Decline Of The Latin American And Caribbean Region
For the Latin American/Caribbean region, one human induced environmental problem would be the
severity of deforestation due to mining practices. According to Lisa Naughton s lecture, the price of
gold has skyrocketed due to the stock market crash, leading to a higher demand of gold and driving
roughly 7,000 miners into the forest, making this a global resource demand. Gold mining has a
significant history South America. According to page 281 of the textbook, Spain demanded that their
colonies provide gold and silver for the Spanish crown during the 1500s, with the crown itself
demanding 20% of all mining profits. Also, outsiders are no strangers to destroying South America s
natural resources for their own benefit. As stated on page 281, ... Show more content on

Fish makes up about 80 percent of protein (Where Have All The Fish Gone? Film) in the Khmer
people s diet, and the downstream impact of the Yali Dam has led to high toxicity levels in the streams
that have killed off the fish. Not only does this affect their diets, but it also affects their economy,
since fish is a main export of Southeast Asia. The Mekong River Commission estimated that $200
million of fish migrate up the Hou Sahong channel a year (Biard, Lecture). The Don Sahong dam
would block this channel, which would impact thousands of people. This problem is a result of local
resource use, since the purpose of this dam is to generate electricity specifically for Cambodia.
Southeast Asia becoming so dependent on exports, such as fish, has increased the severity of this
issue. According to page 404 in the textbook, during the 1970s and 1980s, many southeastern
countries have shifted their focus to developing products that could be exported all over the world.
Similarly to those demanding gold from Latin America, the corporations in charge of the dams care
about benefiting from its profits. According to Baird s article, the main objective of building the Don
Sahong Dam is to generate revenue by exporting electricity to Thailand or Cambodia. Those who
consider this Dam to be a problem would be the people of Cambodia and Laos who depend on the
river for food and survival.

The Characteristics Of Heroes In The Outsides And The...
Gerard Way once said, All the best heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary .
This quote means that someone does not need to be a superhero and have special powers to be a hero.
Heroes are people who do amazing things with what traits they possess. Heroes are extremely
common in books, movies, and comics. In today s society, heroes could be anyone from doctors to
soldiers. Clearly, in the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, Darry Curtis and Dallas Winston both can
be considered heroes. A hero is someone who will selflessly help others. Heroes make the world and
community more desirable places and are admired by others. Heroes make the world a better place

Darry does not want anything to happen to Pony so he has to be very firm with him. Furthermore
Darry looks after the gang and tries to keep them safe. Some of the gang s home lives are not the
greatest so Darry always leaves the front door unlocked so that they can blow off steam and keep
themselves out of trouble. Darry would rather have the gang stay over on their couch than do
something foolish. Without a doubt, Darry Curtis can be considered a hero due to the fact that he
works hard to keep his family together and to support them.
Clearly, Dallas Winston can also be seen as a hero in the book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton. Even
though Dally has a police record a mile long, he cares for Johnny and tries to be a caring and loving
figure in Johnny s life. When Johnny kills Bob, Dally gives him money, a gun, and a safe spot to go.
Dally could have saved the getaway location and his back up plan for himself, but he gave it to
Johnny. Johnny is one of the only things on earth that Dally loves. Another example that Dally is a
hero is that he saves Johnny from the burning church, even though he could die doing it. To save
Johnny from burning to death, he runs back into the church, risking his life in order to save Johnny.
This is exactly what firefighters and other heroes do. Ultimately, as much trouble that Dally causes, he

Stereotypes In American Teen
Video games, card collections, hopeless romanticism, and a hint of social awkwardness. These are the
stereotypes of the average geek. The 2008 movie American Teen displays the storyline of Jake Tusing,
the senior who is portrayed as the geek in the Warsaw Community High School. Jake is a introverted
and awkward video game lover, who, in his story, goes through the process of finding a relationship
that would last last forever. His first ever girlfriend, who was a girl that just moved to the school, was

Business Climate Is A Rewarding Experience
Doing business in Italy can be a rewarding experience. It takes some effort, but if you follow some of
the ideas set forth in this paper you will be able to navigate just fine. The paper will give a brief
overview of what the business climate is like in Italy. Included in information on current GPI and FDI,
and how the political and legal system is structured. A summary of some current events is included as
well as guidelines on doing business with Italians.
Italy is a peninsula, located in the southern section of Western Europe. The nation also includes the
two Mediterranean islands of Sicily and Sardinia, and many smaller islands, (Foot). Surrounded by the
Mediterranean Sea, Italy also shares borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, San Marino
and Vatican City. Italy s climate is Italy covers an area of 301,338 km2 (116,347 sq mi) and has a
largely Mediterranean climate (dry summers and mild, moist winters), (Foot). The republic is
sometimes referred to as the boot, due to its shape as it juts out into the Mediterranean Sea. Italy is a
western style democracy governed as a parliamentary republic, with both a president and a prime
minister. The current Prime Minister is Matteo Renzi, and the current President is Sergio Mattarella,
(Darlington).
Even though it has thousands of years of history, including having been the center of the Roman
Empire, modern Italy is a fairly young nation. Prior to 1861, it was a network of independent city

Tapestry
Reflections of the world and its issues can be found in the strangest of places. Take a quilt for
example, a quilt creates a beautiful pattern using colorful pieces of fabric. While the pieces do touch,
the vibrant colors are forever separated by a boundary, sentenced never to intertwine. However, if one
were to direct their attention to the similar, yet different masterpiece known as a tapestry, another
analogy will present itself. A tapestry is a story retold not with words, but with strings colorful thread
woven together. Although the quilt is beautiful and it s own way, it s a mediocre compared to a
tapestry. A tapestry demands hours of work and patience produce the its famously beautiful portraits,

In this world, all languages and dialects will be taken and woven together to produce a picture that s
beauty is on a scale never before seen. It is my firm belief that to achieve this world of beauty, people
in every corner of the Earth should push for the study of foreign language to be set in the mandatory
curriculum for all students. The statement The children are our future, is not just for Whitney Houston
songs, it s an accurate statement that should be kept in mind when making choices on a child s behalf,
so when it comes time for the decision of mandatory education topics, I request that foreign language
be added to the list. The study of a foreign language is necessary to a juvenile as math or science. Not
only will this study vastly improve a child s knowledge of language and culture, but it will benefit
them in many other subjects as well. For example, bilingualism can offer a helping hand in developing
and strengthening a child s long term learning skills. These skills will follow a child throughout their
school years and into the rest of their life. This benefit is due to the fact that when studying another
dialect a great amount of memorization is needed for a child s brain to fully absorb the knowledge and
become fluent in a language

Essay on Escalation of Violence
The dramatic escalation of violence committed by and against people is shocking (Eron et al., 1994).
Although according to Federal Bureau of Investigation, the murder rate in the year 2009 dropped
almost 7.2 percent in comparison of the murder rate of 2008. Similarly crime rate of crimes like rape
and assault had been decreased up to 4.2 percent each and crime rates of robbery and burglary fell by
1.7 percent and 4.2 percent respectively (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2009) but still the violence
among the youth has increased sharply.
There is no simple explanation for the presence of aggression, nor is there any obvious, easy way to
reduce it. The fundamental basis of violence is absolutely clear: the human capacity for aggression. ...

Such cues can have very strong affects, increasing aggression among people who are in a neutral
mood as well as among those who have been angered by provocation.
Is Violence Learned?
Violent behavior is strongly affected by learning. Rewards obtained by aggression today increase its
use tomorrow. Such rewards come in two flavors:
Positive Reinforcement: when desired outcome are obtained
Negative Reinforcement: when undesirable outcomes are prevented or stopped
Based on this approach Albert Bandura presented psychological social learning theory. It emphasizes
that we learn from the example of others as well as from direct experience with rewards and
punishments. Models influence the prosocial, helpful behavior. They also affect antisocial, aggressive
behavior. Research has amply demonstrated that a wide range of aggressive models can elicit a wide
range of aggressive imitation.
The impact of adult R rated, sexually violent material on sexually related attitudes and beliefs was
investigated in a field study that arranged for 115 college students to attend movies at campus theatres
(Malamuth and Check, 1981). Half of these students saw the commercially successful movies Swept
away and The Gateway, both of which depict women who become sexually aroused by a sexual
assault and romantically attracted to their assailant. The other half watched feature length movies
without sexually

The Black Family In The African American Family
The African American family
Family dynamics across all races are complex. For the state of the black family is made even more
complicated by a history rooted in slavery. Fractured families were born out of a system where
husbands were taken away, jailed or killed, leaving the family weakened with a mother and/or
grandmother at the helm. While these historical facts may be true; that the black family is weak, can
be argued. Yet, the family for many in the black community and other communities of color extend to
include a large number of kin. On the other hand, it can also be argued that since families were ripped
apart during the slave trade it created an opportunity for setting up networks of support and family
units to include members who may not be blood related. You often hear black people refer to an elder
as aunt or uncle these networks were put in place as protective factors in the event that parents were
sold there was an assurance that someone would care for the children. To an extent this behavior
continues to this day as we see many fathers sentenced to long jail terms for petty crimes or killed.
The family structure makeup may be a blood relative and it may also be kin of another kind.
LaShawnDa Pittman discusses how these factors shape the African American family and how slavery
impacted the role of the mother and father within the family system. During slavery there wasn t any
possibility of childhood. Children were socialized to begin work at the age of

Ode To A Grecian Urn, And The Lady Of Shallot
Writers ranging from the Victorian age onward have reflected the influence of art within their works.
While art is significant in exhibiting the culture in which such handiwork was produced, the process of
creation was often used as a coping mechanism for most artists, and sometimes an escape for those
who viewed it. This such attitude is reflected within the writings from the Victorian age to modern
times. Poems such as The Dolls by William Yeats, Ode to a Grecian Urn by John Keats, and The Lady
of Shallot showcase this point by putting emphasis on the art itself, and its impact upon the artist or
narrator. In Ode to the Grecian Urn the narrator asks who canst thus express/ a flowery tale more
sweetly than our rhyme (Keats 3 4). The designs etched upon the urn seem to showcase a story, one
far opposite of the toils of daily life. The narrator is drawn to the seemingly unmarred tale. In his mind
s eye, the life expressed upon the container is greater than his own; heard melodies are sweet, but
those unheard/ are sweeter (11 12). He wants to live the moments captured within the engravings,
despite the impossibility of that happening. Bold lover, never, never canst thou kiss comes off as
morbid. Yet the narrator hurries to reassure that in fact, it is a mercy to the couple, do not grieve;/ she
cannot fade, thought thou hast not thy bliss/ for ever wilt thou love, and she be fair (18 20)! In the
narrator s eyes, the lovers are forever caught within a precious

The Third Wave Feminism
There are three waves of feminism. The first wave (1830 s early 1900 s) emphasized on legal issues
and gaining political power including the right to vote to bring gender equality. The second wave
(1960 s 1980 s) stressed on broadening the discussions to a wider range. They focused on the work
place, sexuality, family, reproductive rights, domestic violence and marital rape issues. The third wave
(1900 s present) expands the topic of feminism to include women with varied identities and a response
to the failures of movements by second wave feminism. Rebecca Walker coined the term third wave
feminism in an essay Becoming the Third Wave (1992). In the introduction to idea of third wave
feminism in Manifesta authors Jennifer Baumgardner and Amy Richards suggest that feminism can
change with every generation and individual. Feminists have long criticised the institution of
marriage. They stated that marriage leads to oppression of women and their rights curtailed. The
gender inequality is judged from the fact that mostly women take up domestic and caring work and
they get paid less than men for outside work. Traditionally, all men give speech and the women
surrender her name to take her husband s name. As a high profile couple, Jean Paul Sartre and Simone
de Beauvoir always expressed opposition to marriage. Brian Sawyer in his post published in
November 2003 wrote Marriage, understood existentially, proposes to join two free selves into one
heading, thus denying the

Abortion Thesis Essay

Thesis
Abortion is a totally unacceptable, cruel and unethical practice and
should be considered illegal except under some special cases and medical
circumstances that indicate a danger to the mother. Our judicial system
must consider the ethical and moral aspects of abortion as an intrinsic
part of the problem when approaching this social issue. The recent banning
of the partial birth abortion is a huge stride in the positive direction.
Introduction
Abortion is the one of the most debated social issues of this
century. The controversy as to the right that man has over the life of a
baby in the fetus and in controlling its entry into the world is a much
debated topic. Abortion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore they argue that the
embryo cannot be treated as a human being until such a time that it is
fully developed to live outside the mother s womb. So they consider using
the abortion pill as perfectly right and acceptable method of terminating
pregnancy.
Pro Life
On the other hand we have the Pro life group, which opines that
abortion in any form to be an unacceptable and inhuman practice and nothing
short of brutal murder and infringement of the rights of the baby in the
fetus. The Pro life group views the problem from an entirely different
perspective. This group considers that life begins as soon as the baby is
conceived and hence abortion is viewed as a breach of rights of the baby.
However the group approves abortion as the last and only resort in cases of
emergency wherein the life of both the baby and the mother or at least one
of them is at stake. Abortion is also approved in cases wherein the child
is abnormal with severe birth defects.
Partial Birth abortion
This is the worst and the cruelest form of abortion. The Woman s
cervix is dilated for two days and then on the third day the Abortionist
pulls out the baby by its feet and then stabs the soft skull and sucks away
its brain using a vacuum tube. As against the strict medical grounds, which
suggested abortions for protecting the mother (due to malformation of child
in the embryo), it was

My Inspiration In Life
My Inspiration in Life

When I was a little boy, in 2008, I watched my first Olympic games, held in Beijing. I remember
sitting on the ground, next to my parents, fascinated by the opening ceremony, by the fireworks and
the abundance of things that were happening at the same time. Every day after school I ran home and
turned on the TV to watch the games of the Olympics. It was unbelievable! So many people doing so
many events that I had never seen in my life: throwing sticks, jumping over little fences, running for
hours, smashing a big metal ball in the ground and the list goes on.
What fascinated me the most was the men and women who were jumping so high, that they were
almost able to reach the sky with their hands while coming so close to knocking over the stick
suspended in mid air in such a way that it was beauty itself. I recorded the event on a cassette and
watched it over and over again until I understood the way how the athletes stepped, the method they
used to jump, the style in which they were moving their body through the air, and finally how they
landed gracefully on their back. It was a starting point of my lifetime goal: becoming a good High
Jumper.

In this paper, I will cover five different pricing strategies used, by retailers and manufacturers, to sell
their products. I will demonstrate how pricing products according to one of the five pricing strategies
chosen works effectively for each company.
Loss Leader
Look in any newspaper circular, it is chocked full of advertisements from untold numbers of retailers
who are trying to push loss leaders onto consumers. The loss leader is an item that is sold below cost
and is designed to lure people to the store to shop. The loss leader might be a popular item, yet an

The entry level $99.00 mattress is good in the sense that it is better than sleeping directly on the floor.
The next level mattress might set you back a few more hundred dollars and might seem like the way to
go, until they lead you to the top end model.
Finally, the salesman will show you the Tempurpedic Swedish sleep system. This mattress is the top of
the line and you may not want to move once they get you to lay on it; in the end, you certainly will not
purchase their $99.00 mattress.
Competitive Advantage
The industry that comes to mind when it comes to competitive advantage pricing is gas stations.
Notice that most gas stations do not want to price their fuel much lower than their closest competitors
do. As soon as one station raises its price, it is almost certain that the neighboring stations will follow
suit within a matter of hours. What is really disturbing is that the gas stations will change their prices
on the fuel that is already in the ground.
A local gas station down the street from my house prices their fuel slightly more expensive than the
Union 76 station down the road. I drive by both stations everyday and notice that as soon as the 76
station changes their price, up or down – but usually up, the local station nearer my house will
discover this and change his price to compensate. This pricing strategy indicates that the local fuel
station, as with most other fuel stations use competitive advantage to price their product.

Essay A Sorrowful Woman
A Sorrowful Woman The story that is A Sorrowful Woman seems to be a story told from the point of
view of a narrator who focuses only slightly on the inner conflict of one of the main charters in the
story. The character of which I am speaking is never referred to by name, instead is called she, the
woman, mommy, and wife throughout the entire story which lends credence to the conclusion of the
viewpoint as being told from the outside. The first indication that the focus of the story will be not of a
warm and loving nature is the line The sight of them made her so sad and sick she did not want to see
them again (1). This is where a hypothesis can begin to be formed as to who the antagonist of the story

Then in the next line there is no mention of the woman speaking to the child or acknowledging that
the child ever spoke to her. The purposeful shunning of the child by the woman is appalling and
baffling at the same time. The child in the story is an innocent, wanting to please and gain
acknowledgement and love from the very woman that is sickened by the very sight of the child. The
mysterious reasons for the shunning of the child can be guessed at in committee, but without more
history as to reasoning: the idea of the woman seeing the child as the one reason for her illness is the
most conclusive idea to be had. A supporting clause for the woman being ever more resentful of the
child is the description given when during the course of play, the woman is scratched enough to draw
a small bead or two of blood, One of his sharp little claws ripped her flesh, just above the wrist... a
thin red line materialized on the inside of her pale arm and spill over with tiny beads (6). The reaction
to this was not to grimace and clean her arm or to take time to trim the child s finger nails to prevent
such from happening again. Instead the woman says clearly Go away (6). Then lock herself away from
the child. No explanation or reason given to the child but to ignore and satisfy vengeance towards
what the woman views as something that

For instance, when you fold the rear seats, they get neatly tucked into ridges. Plus there is a ski hatch

Sunday Morning By Wallace Stevens
Wallace Stevens a well known American poet once said, In poetry, you must love the words, the ideas
and the images and rhythms with all your capacity to love anything at all. In these lines, Stevens
beautifully reveals that poetry is all about enjoying each line and each and every part of the poem as it
would give you satisfaction and love for poetry as never before. Similarly, Stevens wrote a
magnificent piece of work Sunday Morning , with various pieces of literary devices to enhance his
poetry making it descriptive and enjoyable to read. For example, the use of techniques such as
symbolism, theme, imagery, and tone Sunday Morning displays the clash that the speaker endures as
she questions the Christian religion and her discovery of love for nature. It is evident throughout the
poem that the woman has difficulty finding happiness in religion and enjoys nature, finding it to be
inspiring unlike religion that can be destructive and disappointing. The poem starts out with strong
imagery and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout, the poem, it is evident that Stevens use of literary devices such as tone, imagery,
symbolism, and theme, allows the poem to be engaging to read and to get the message across all levels
of readers. Throughout, the poem the speaker which is the woman questions religion and the rewards
that result from Christianity and wonders how life would be if revolved around nature instead of
religion. The poems message that nature must be adored because it is not permanent and everything
that is temporary is worth living allowed readers like me to really wonder if every religion is the same
or not. This poem has created a new perception of how to see nature and religion and how we should
avoid exhausting ourselves under fixed religion and should focus more on finding bliss on earth where

I Am An Active Participant
While it is important that my students are enjoying my class, one of the ways I am able to tell that my
students are excelling is their ability to demonstrate their growth through assessments. Although it is
important students are excelling, it is also important that students are able to be an active participant in
their own growth. Effective teachers allow students to constantly reflect on how they are doing in
class and how they are meeting classroom goals. Assessment reflection ultimately influences how
teachers and learners continue to access material. After teachers have tracked the data of students, it is
then important that they are using a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop
deep understanding of content areas.
Standard 6 states that teachers should use a variety of assessments to ensure students are reaching their
goals. My first piece of evidence includes three different assessments. Each assessment addresses a
different kind of learner. For example, the first assessment is an exit ticket that allows me to see how
students have grasped information at the end of the period. The last assessment I have included is a
writing assessment. After students took the writing assessment, I then recorded their writing scores as
demonstrated in my second piece of evidence. I carefully monitor both my student s reading and
writing progress. In order to engage my students in their own own growth, I provide ample

Early Onset Bipolar Disorder Case Study
Understanding the etiology of a child or adolescent diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder may allow a
practitioner, researcher, parent or teacher an acute clarity of the diagnosis. Carlsons et al. (2009),
intent for research was to reaffirm and decipher the multiplicity of descriptions for children and
adolescents diagnosed with Early Onset Bipolar Disorder. While, Youngstrom (2009) identified the
development of the Tripartite Model a high level of negative affect outweighing the positive affect
creating anxiety and depression. The DSM provides us with the symptoms for Bipolar Disorder, yet
the clarity in early onset leaves a vacancy. Although I may agree with the modality of Youngstrom
(2009) I also conform with Carlsons et al. (2009) findings. We need to begin by reviewing biology,
neurology, pharmacotherapy, prodromes and psychosocial behavior to find the comorbidity of any
behavior disorders to provide adequate data with work groups. Assimilating the Tripartite ... Show

A Brief Note On Internal Medicine And Nursing Essay
People are my passion! I wake up each morning praying that I make a positive impact in someone s
life. The value of my life lies not on personal achievement and possessions but on how profitable I
have been to my neighbor and my world. This belief, no doubt has influenced my choice of career and
specialty. Internal medicine is my number one specialty. I love this specialty because it provides me
the opportunity to solve varied medical problems ranging from acute care to management of chronic
disease. Just like solving a puzzle, an internist applies critical thinking, sound science in preventing,
diagnosing and treating varied adult diseases. Internal Medicine is an ever evolving discipline and
requires continuous and persistent updating of one s knowledge. This sits well with my massive
appetite of reading. I enjoy the challenges the specialty presents. I love the fact that an internist
provides consults to other physicians in disease diagnosis and work as primary care physician. The
broad subspecialties in internal medicine match and exceeds my perception of a complete doctor.
From a young age, my parents taught me to care and serve others. Although they had very little
western education, my parents became successful business owners and community leaders largely due
to hard work and dedicated service to people. They always told me that I could succeed in anything I
choose to do. They understood the value of education and supported me in all my endeavors.

Standardized Configurations across the Network
DeVry University
NETW206: Introduction to Switching
Submitted to:
Professor:
Date: 0/0/00
In the last week, we just got an idea about the network configuration which we are going to implement
in the organization. As per the requirement, we have to implement 150 cameras in the network. So we
have to have huge bandwidth in our network to transfer the data from 150 cameras. By implementing
the technology called Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN), we can save the bandwidth of our LAN.
VLAN means a group of devices on one or more logically segmented LANs (configured by use of
management software), enabling devices to communicate as if attached to the same physical medium,
when they are actually located on numerous different LAN segments. VLANs are based on logical
instead of physical connections and thus are tremendously flexible.
There are two types of VLANs.
1. End to End VLANs
2. Local VLANs
End to End VLANs
The term end to end VLAN refers to a single VLAN that is associated with switch ports that are
widely dispersed throughout an enterprise network on multiple switches. A Layer 2 switched campus
network carries traffic for this VLAN

The Black Cat Pluto s Transformation
The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe is about an unnamed narrator who claims to be sane, but ironically
tells the story of his transformation from a compassionate individual into a murderer. The narrator
lives with his caring wife and many pets, including a large black cat named Pluto. The friendship
between the narrator and Pluto changes when the narrator heavily indulges in alcohol. His
intemperance takes a toll on his psychological well being, as it sparks in him a spirit of perverseness:
doing something that is wrong just for the sake of being wrong. This force, in the same way, allows
the narrator to deal with his drunkenness through logical reasoning, which motivates him to murder
Pluto. The narrator then invites into his home a new cat ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Eventually, the thought that this cat is Pluto s successor tortures the narrator especially because it
shows him so much affection. He complains that the [cat s] evident fondness for [him] rather
disgust[s] and annoy[s] [him] (9). Tormented by Pluto s successor, he feels as though the cat s
presence is the consequence that he must pay for murdering Pluto. The overwhelming guilt eats away
at him and ultimately drives him insane. He feels the urge to kill Pluto s successor so he no longer has
to feel this agony. As the narrator and his wife are walking down the stairs, the cat nearly trips him.
This small accident provokes the narrator to relentlessly grab an axe to kill the cat. However, he
struggles to do so, as he is unexpectedly stopped by the grasp of his wife s hand. As a result of his
impetuous nature and perverse state of mind, [he] withdrew [his] arm from her grasp and buried the
axe in her brain (11). There is no real reason for the to attempt to kill the cat that did nothing but offer
him love. Thus, it is evident that his mind, body, and soul are taken over by an uncontrollable
perverseness that causes him to lose sight of what is good or bad, and what is right or wrong. He no
longer thinks about what he is doing, but rather, his actions are impulses of the human heart, which

Feminist Theory Applied to Hamlet
Representing Ophelia: Women, Madness, and the Responsibilities of Feminist Criticism Elaine
Showalter Though she is neglected in criticism, Ophelia is probably the most frequently illustrated and
cited of Shakespeare s heroines. Her visibility as a subject in literature, popular culture, and painting,
from Redon who paints her drowning, to Bob Dylan, who places her on Desolation Row, to Cannon
Mills, which has named a flowery sheet pattern after her, is in inverse relation to her invisibility in
Shakespearean critical texts. Why has she been such a potent and obsessive figure in our cultural
mythology? Insofar as Hamlet names Ophelia as woman and frailty, substituting an ideological view
of femininity for a personal one, is she indeed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to David Leverenz, in an important essay called The Woman in Hamlet. Hamlet s disgust at
the feminine passivity in himself is translated into violent revulsion against women, and into his brutal
behaviour towards Ophelia. Ophelia s suicide, Leverenz argues, then becomes a microcosm of the
male world s banishment of the female, because woman represents everything denied by reasonable
men. To liberate Ophelia from the text, or to make her its tragic center, is to re appropriate her for our
own ends; to dissolve her into a female symbolism of absence is to endorse our own marginality; to
make her Hamlet s anima is to reduce her to a metaphor of male experience. I would like to propose
instead that Ophelia does have a story of her own that feminist criticism can tell; it is neither her life
story, nor her love story, nor Lacan s story, but rather the history of her representation. This essay tries
to bring together some of the categories of French feminist thought about the feminine with the
empirical energies of American historical and critical research; to yoke French theory and Yankee
knowhow. Tracing the iconography of Ophelia in English and French painting, photography,
psychiatry, and literature, as well as in theatrical production, I will be showing first of all the
representational bonds between female insanity and female sexuality. Secondly, I

My Experience With Doctor Visits
Twisted Something was wrong. Every fiber within me was screaming this but my mind refused to
accept it. The nausea, lack of energy, and the constant feeling of being tired were becoming
commonplace in my daily life. The thought of going to see a doctor was not something I was looking
forward to and had not been entertained frequently by me in the past. I had always taken pride in
being active and healthy. Unbeknownst to me, doctor visits would become a regular, unpleasant,
occurrence for me in the months to follow. It was a cool crisp fall morning in October 2013. The air
had the distinct aroma of the winter months that were pressing hard to reveal themselves. A light
breeze softly scattered the leaves gently across our front yard. It held the promise of becoming a
beautiful day, but not for me. Thinking back, I remember how I used to love this time of year, but this
year felt very different. My husband Darrell and I had finally found the perfect house to rent after a
year of searching. Even though we hated the process of moving it was something we had looked
forward to for such a long time. Darrell was up early that morning packing, labeling, and busying
himself with various other tasks required for such an event. Normally this was something I would
gladly have jumped right in and helped with. However, I was not as energetic as he was. I had noticed
lately I was lacking in the motivation category and everyday chores seemed to drain me quite easily.

Comparing Plath s The Bell Jar And Its Affiliates
The Bell Jar and Its Affiliates
Frequently, a writer will express the same symbols and themes in a variety of their works. This is the
case with Sylvia Plath, who not only wrote a multitude of poems, but also wrote the renowned novel,
The Bell Jar. Three of Plath s poems that share similar elements to her novel are Lorelei , Daddy , and
The Applicant . These ideas include death beckoning the characters, an unstable family unit, and
sexism towards women. The poems Lorelei , Daddy , and The Applicant can be compared to Plath s
novel The Bell Jar, by examining the key themes and characteristics of the works. The first of Plath s
poems that is comparable to The Bell Jar is Lorelei . In both of the works, death beckons to the
characters. In Lorelei , siren like creatures beckon for the speaker to drown herself. The speaker notes
how their ice hearted calling (Lorelei 31) is compelling her to commit suicide. This can be compared
to the ocean waves in The Bell Jar, which [draw] back, like a hand, ... Show more content on

ideals, refusing to learn a new way of writing as [she] hate[s] the idea of serving men in any way (Bell

So I used the keywords exercise, benefits, and weekly. About 30 articles came up. It didn t take me
long before I found the perfect article. I read through the article and realized this is exactly the
information I need. I then exported the article into EasyBib and continued on with my search. I
continued using EBSCO database. I tried using the keywords fitness, mental and benefits. Again, I
realized I needed to narrow down my search. Four hundred different articles had come up. I narrowed
my search down by using moderate exercise, mental, and benefits. EBSCO provided me with 27
different articles. I found one that would work perfectly for my research. While reading through this
article, I noticed a word I didn t recognize. I quickly used the dictionary built in on my computer to
look up the word adjunct. I learned this word means a thing added to something else as a
supplementary rather than an essential part. Next, I switched my database to Proquest. I used the
keywords weekly, benefits, mental, and exercise. When I searched the keywords, Proquest provided
me with 56 articles. I read through each carefully to find one that matched my topic. In the article I
chose to use, researchers tested a group of students. They recorded mood and anxiety levels before and
after the workout. The students exercised at different paces and for different amounts of

What Is The Theme Of Act Of Union By Seamus Heaney
Act of Union Through the years, Irish poetry had a leaning towards representing Ireland as a raped
woman. Seamus Heaney s Act of Union , from his 1975 book of poetry, North, uses the theme of
relationship, portraying Britain as a man towering over the weaker, feminine Ireland. The poem uses
strong sexual metaphors, which try to compare the colonization of Ireland to that of a rape. The
metaphors used through the poem describes what took place between England and Ireland as well as a
sexual act taking place between a man and a woman. The poem s title Act of Union shadows over the
poem with its double meaning. One interpretation of the title can be the actual Act of Union in 1801.

Again, it also has a double meaning, referring to the aftermath of a rape, pregnancy. In the next two
lines, the speaker describes the pain of childbirth, where Britain does not need to bear the
consequences, he can leave Ireland, the pregnant woman , to deal with the difficult outcomes. Britain
takes advantage of a union between the two, leaving Ireland painfully abused and hurt. These imagery

to describe traitors. This fifth column the poem refers to can be read as a political movement,
certainly, and is often thought to refer to Ulster loyalists. It s the offspring of the liaison, Northern

The Philosophy Of Social Science
Hollis expresses his intention to explore the philosophy of social science of which he categorises into
four modes. He attempted to seek for the acceptable compromises between all and each mode to
define a better way of understanding the social world. Hollis clearly states that the key task of this
book is to reflect on the underlying philosophy of social science through the critical examination of
the theory and methodology in each approach. Some of the key questions are; whether the study of
social science can use the same method as in natural science, does structure determine an action or
does action determines structure in the process of social changes, and is there such a thing as the
universal strategy to help social scientists in understanding the way of the world. The main theme
focuses on Explanation and Understanding with the minor theme of Holism and Individualism. The
book initially gives the impression that each social study approach has its strength and weakness that
the combination of approaches would be beneficial and worth pursuing.
Hollis starts off with the introduction of Structure and Action. The comparative framework is set out
by the two social scientists who employ two different principles; Karl Marx and John Stuart Mills.
Determinism is then introduced to further illuminate the difference between these two theories. Hollis
also provides readers with the fundamental feature of Explanation and Understanding. The

Phytophthora ramorum Susceptibility as Measure of Leaf Age by Primary Reservoir Host California
Bay Laurel
Abstrct
Sudden Oak Death, a disease caused by the protist Phytophthora ramorum has contributed
significantly to the degradation of Oak Woodland communities from Oregon to California since its
invasion in 1995, yet many questions remain about their primary reservoir host Umbellularia
.Californica. U. Californica leaves resulted in an increased susceptibility with from first to past years
leaf growth while the water content within the leaf had no influence on the magnitude of necrosis.
Introduction
Sudden Oak Death, a disease caused by the protist Phytophthora ramorum, is sweeping through
California, dismantling Oak Woodland communities. First observed in Germany and the Netherlands
infecting species of Rhododendron and Viburnum, symptoms of the pathogen include; the browning of
leaves, large bleeding cankers, and mortality in several species (Harmon). In the Central Coast of
California, host species include, but are not limited to, the Quercus sp., Notholithocarpus sp., and
Umbellularia sp. Quercus and Notholithocarpus being terminal host and Umbellularia being a
reservoir host (DiLeo).
Within the genus Phytophthora, species have different morphology, but several have been associated
with oak mortality. For example, in California, P. cinnimomi, P. cactorum, and P. citricula can cause
root and crown rot in oaks. Proliferation of these Phytophthora sp. were seen in

in question 1? Explain how you determined this. Direct vs indirect accept/reject =Rejected. The motor
was just as fast when the solar panel was set up at a 45 degree angle Direct vs reflected accept/reject =
Accepted. When the foil was reflected at the solar panel, the motor moved faster. Direct vs shaded
accept/reject = At 25% shading Rejected The motor moved just as fast as when the solar panel was
completely exposed to sunlight. At 50% Accepted The motor moved slower than when the solar panel
was completely exposed to sunlight (speed medium to fast) At 75% Accepted The motor moved very
slow compared to when the solar panel was completely exposed to sunlight (Very slow) Direct vs
filtered accept/reject = Rejected Upon being covered by the red, yellow, green, and blue cellophane,
the motor moved the same as in direct sunlight 3. Does increased exposure to the sun s light produce

Cultural Religions In Ancient China
In ancient china there were two main cultural religions. These were Taoism and Buddhism. Taoism is
China s oldest religion. At one time, the land called China was the home of numerous peoples with
different racial origins. All these ethnic groups probably had their own special gods and religious
beliefs. Over time, kingdoms and empires grew in various areas and started incorporating more and
more people into them. One common theme in these kingdoms and empires was a belief in life after
death as can be seen in ancient tombs all over China. So people had to pay homage to and care for the
dead. Some Chinese have fear of the dead, and they try to obey the dead or appease them. Another
idea that is very strong in Chinese philosophy is as Chinese

Comparing Dystopic Worlds in George Orwell s 1984 and Ray...
Imagine this, a perfect world of complete harmony and justice. There is no wrong, and there is no
right. There is only utopia. It might be the perfect place where people want to live, or the place that
people dream about. It might even be the picture of the future. However, this Utopian world is
revealed to have flaws. It lacks many of the qualities of life that exist today. Thus the Utopian world
isn t so Utopian anymore. And the more that is revealed about the world, the more horrible it becomes.
Soon, it becomes a nightmare, a world of illusions, of lies. That is the dystopic world that authors such
as Bradbury and George Orwell pictures in their books, a world that exists under the image of utopia,
and yet to the reader seems like a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This way of thinking is also twisted in a sense, because totalitarian governments do not care for the
well being of its people. The people who rule only want power. That is why the reader realizes that the
piece of literature is dystopic. In Fahrenheit 451, the totalitarian government controls the police,
mechanical hounds, and the firemen. The firemen act under the wishes of the government to burn
people s books. An explanation of the firemen is revealed in Beatty s quote, ...there was no longer
need of firemen for the old purposes. They were given the new job, as custodians of out peace of
mind, the focus of our understandable and rightful dread of being inferior: official censors, judges, and
executors. That s you, Montag, and that s me (58, 59). Beatty is explaining the reason that
governments created firemen to burn books. The government can censor information that the public
receives with the creation of the firemen, and it is the job to the people and the firemen to do their
duties without question. That illustrates the totalitarian government in the society of Fahrenheit 451.
In 1984, the totalitarian government is led by a figure, Big Brother. The Inner Party and the Outer
Party are also part of the totalitarian government, only consisting of 15% of the population of Oceania.
These people in the Inner and Outer Parties, with the exception to Winston, are

Allusion In The Rich Brother By Tobias Wolff
The Rich Brother by Tobias Wolff is about two brothers who are polar opposite in appearance and
perception. The story alluded to the biblical story of Cain and Abel, which was the outline of the story.
The story poses the question of who is the rich brother by showing both Donald and Pete in ways that
the reader could perceive them as wealthy. The true rich brother comes down to a personal meaning of
wealth, but based on the use of biblical allusion, most will side with Donald. Due to the allusion, the
reader can infer that Donald was the rich brother, because he was symbolic of Abel who was murdered
by his brother. It s more beneficial to be rich in optimism and happiness, and this theme was expressed
throughout the story by its use of biblical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This idea relates to the story of Cain and Abel, Jacob and Esau, Joseph and all of his brothers, where
family competition is a big component to the meaning of each story. Most biblical and present day
examples of sibling rivalry are due to jealousy between one and another. In The Rich Brother, Donald
is perfectly content with his life. Even though he is mostly wandering around aimlessly, he is
genuinely happy and is optimistic. Pete on the other hand is successful; he has money, a family, and
has a real role in society. Yet, he is still somewhat empty and striving for a feeling of completeness. By
seeing his younger brother who he perceives as stupid, immature, and a nuisance, as happy as he was,
Pete became jealous of Donald s happiness and contentment with his non materialistic life. Even
though Donald wasn t successful in any configuration, he seemed fulfilled and that upset Pete. Even
after Pete left Donald alone at the end of the story, Pete still felt incomplete, and he seemed to regret
leaving his brother out to die. Wolff was trying to get the reader to see that Pete would never live a
satisfied life because of how he always looked at the glass half empty. Whether he thought of picking
Donald up from the religious farm as a way to spend more time together, rather than a burden, he
could have turned the experience into a joyful one. If Pete had been more optimistic

The, And, By Ernest Holmes
Ernest Holmes addresses a trepidation we may have when giving: our resources will be temporarily
depleted. It is common sense that the more we give, the less we have; but there is a principle at work
which defies common sense, because the appearance of loss and lack is deceptive. Once we have
sown a seed our hands are empty, but the soil is full and soon we will have our hands full with the
harvest of that seed. If we had held onto that seed, there would be no harvest and we would eventually
be empty handed. However, giving in a principled manner does not incur a loss, but gains. Giving, as
a matter of principle, is the difference between gaining more or having less. Of course, if we go
through the motions of giving appearing to give, but actually throwing money away in an unprincipled
manner, then we have simply wasted our time, and our treasure. Not every seed sown, grows; some
fall on hard, stony ground and never take root. Not every prayer is heard and answered; some fall on
deaf ears our own. Having ears, we hear not. Having eyes, we see not. And having our hands full, we
give not. It is a shame, because we could give, have and enjoy more.
DIMINISHED EXPECTATIONS
Holmes relates the responsiveness of Life to the idea that Nature abhors a vacuum. In an infinite
universe, there cannot be an empty void, a place where God is not. All space, all vessels, all containers
must be filled with something. So, when something is drawn out of one place, more is drawn

Reliance Fresh Case Study Essay
According to exhibit 7 from the case study, households are estimated to spend 27,000 rupees in
Reliance Fresh and 23,000 rupees in Shiny Provision store (Richard Ivey School of Business, 2012, p.
205). These expenditures are on a monthly basis on groceries, vegetables and fruits. Households with
an income range below 10,000 Indian rupees spend the same amount of in both stores which are 2,000
rupees. Those with income ranging between 10,000 and 20,000 spend more rupees in expenditure in
Reliance Fresh store than in Shiny Provision store. Households with income ranging from 20,000 to
30,000 spend 1,300 more rupees in Reliance Fresh store to purchase groceries, vegetables and fruits

202). Reliance Fresh is attributed to having good signage, a pleasant atmosphere, attractive layout,
easy to find products in the store, and attractive and informative displays. The store appears to have
well spaced merchandise and is bigger in size. Reliance Fresh is very well organized with shelves and
aisles just like in a supermarket. Items have been categorized and stocked accordingly in different
shelves. On the other hand, Shiny Provision is attributed to having messy shelves, poor signage, no
goods displayed all over in an attractive layout and generally does not have the most pleasant
atmosphere. However, the store has informative advertising whereby the services are more
personalized and interactive. The customer interacts with the shopkeeper and explains what they want;
the latter then offers the product and sometimes recommendations for a different product. Shiny
Provision offers a better avenue for discounts, quantities befitting the customer s budget, and cheaper
products. Reliance Fresh appears to have well known better quality brands compared to Shiny
Provision which has inferior quality goods. The latter store offers private and manufacturer brands and
exclusive assortment of products. Shiny Provision also offers an unlimited selection of merchandise
and discounted prices on private branded groceries. Their sales clerks are not as well dressed as those
of Reliance Fresh, but they are more knowledgeable about the products. Both stores have very helpful

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CBT)
The topic that I would like to discuss is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), this topic is very
close to me since was a member of the armed forces and suffer from aggressive stress. Our text
defines PTSD as a disorder that occurs following an extreme event, in which a person re experiences
the event, avoids reminders of the trauma, and exhibits persistent increased arousal (Hooley, p. 622) It
isn t common knowledge that PTSD isn t limited to war trauma s, it can be brought on by childhood
abuse, car accidents, anything severely life changing, etc. The history of PTSD isn t a very short one,
however it was just recently added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM III) although controversial when introduced, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

According to Tichy and Sherman (1993), Jack Welch saw reality objectively and consistently applied this orientation. He was willing to face reality, even if it was different from that in the past: Facing reality as it is, not as it was or as you wish ... facing reality is crucial in life, not just in business. You have to see the world in the purest, cleanest way possible or you can t make decisions on a rational basis. As noted by Locke (2000), Welch was a problem finder, not just a problem solver. When he became CEO in 1981, General Electric already was quite profitable, without obvious problems. He grasped the reality that if the status quo continued GE eventually would decline, so he proceeded to transform the company. Even during his final years at GE, Welch was not content to rest on his triumphs. Thrusts in the 1990s included a massive quality program ( 6 sigma ), a push further into financial services, and a string of acquisitions meant to give GE technological leadership in key industries. A related aspect of Jack Welch s leadership was to set goals that seemed difficult or even impossible (Locke, 2000). He required that every business in GE s portfolio be number one or two in its industry in the United States, and later in the world as a whole. Steve Kerr of General Electric described the GE stretch target as basically an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Decline Of The Latin American And Caribbean Region For the Latin American/Caribbean region, one human induced environmental problem would be the severity of deforestation due to mining practices. According to Lisa Naughton s lecture, the price of gold has skyrocketed due to the stock market crash, leading to a higher demand of gold and driving roughly 7,000 miners into the forest, making this a global resource demand. Gold mining has a significant history South America. According to page 281 of the textbook, Spain demanded that their colonies provide gold and silver for the Spanish crown during the 1500s, with the crown itself demanding 20% of all mining profits. Fish makes up about 80 percent of protein (Where Have All The Fish Gone? Film) in the Khmer people s diet, and the downstream impact of the Yali Dam has led to high toxicity levels in the streams that have killed off the fish. Not only does this affect their diets, but it also affects their economy, since fish is a main export of Southeast Asia. The Mekong River Commission estimated that $200 million of fish migrate up the Hou Sahong channel a year (Biard, Lecture). The Don Sahong dam would block this channel, which would impact thousands of people. This problem is a result of local resource use, since the purpose of this dam is to generate electricity specifically for Cambodia. Southeast Asia becoming so dependent on exports, such as fish, has increased the severity of this issue. According to page 404 in the textbook, during the 1970s and 1980s, many southeastern countries have shifted their focus to developing products that could be exported all over the world. Similarly to those demanding gold from Latin America, the corporations in charge of the dams care about benefiting from its profits. According to Baird s article, the main objective of building the Don Sahong Dam is to generate revenue by exporting electricity to Thailand or Cambodia. Those who consider this Dam to be a problem would be the people of Cambodia and Laos who depend on the river for food and survival. Part B. Activists, such as Kuti ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This quote means that someone does not need to be a superhero and have special powers to be a hero. Heroes are people who do amazing things with what traits they possess. Heroes are extremely common in books, movies, and comics. In today s society, heroes could be anyone from doctors to soldiers. Clearly, in the book The Outsiders by S.E. Darry would rather have the gang stay over on their couch than do something foolish. Without a doubt, Darry Curtis can be considered a hero due to the fact that he works hard to keep his family together and to support them. Clearly, Dallas Winston can also be seen as a hero in the book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton. Even though Dally has a police record a mile long, he cares for Johnny and tries to be a caring and loving figure in Johnny s life. When Johnny kills Bob, Dally gives him money, a gun, and a safe spot to go. Dally could have saved the getaway location and his back up plan for himself, but he gave it to Johnny. Johnny is one of the only things on earth that Dally loves. Another example that Dally is a hero is that he saves Johnny from the burning church, even though he could die doing it. While the pieces do touch, the vibrant colors are forever separated by a boundary, sentenced never to intertwine. However, if one were to direct their attention to the similar, yet different masterpiece known as a tapestry, another analogy will present itself. A tapestry is a story retold not with words, but with strings colorful thread woven together. Although the quilt is beautiful and it s own way, it s a mediocre compared to a tapestry. In this world, all languages and dialects will be taken and woven together to produce a picture that s beauty is on a scale never before seen. It is my firm belief that to achieve this world of beauty, people in every corner of the Earth should push for the study of foreign language to be set in the mandatory curriculum for all students. The statement The children are our future, is not just for Whitney Houston songs, it s an accurate statement that should be kept in mind when making choices on a child s behalf, so when it comes time for the decision of mandatory education topics, I request that foreign language be added to the list. The study of a foreign language is necessary to a juvenile as math or science. Not only will this study vastly improve a child s knowledge of language and culture, but it will benefit them in many other subjects as well. For example, bilingualism can offer a helping hand in developing and strengthening a child s long term learning skills. These skills will follow a child throughout their school years and into the rest of their life. This benefit is due to the fact that when studying another dialect a great amount of memorization is needed for a child s brain to fully absorb the knowledge and become fluent in a language ... Although according to Federal Bureau of Investigation, the murder rate in the year 2009 dropped almost 7.2 percent in comparison of the murder rate of 2008. Similarly crime rate of crimes like rape and assault had been decreased up to 4.2 percent each and crime rates of robbery and burglary fell by 1.7 percent and 4.2 percent respectively (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2009) but still the violence among the youth has increased sharply. The fundamental basis of violence is absolutely clear: the human capacity for aggression. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Such cues can have very strong affects, increasing aggression among people who are in a neutral mood as well as among those who have been angered by provocation. Is Violence Learned? Violent behavior is strongly affected by learning. Rewards obtained by aggression today increase its use tomorrow. Such rewards come in two flavors: Positive Reinforcement: when desired outcome are obtained Negative Reinforcement: when undesirable outcomes are prevented or stopped Based on this approach Albert Bandura presented psychological social learning theory. It emphasizes that we learn from the example of others as well as from direct experience with rewards and punishments. Models influence the prosocial, helpful behavior. They also affect antisocial, aggressive behavior. Research has amply demonstrated that a wide range of aggressive models can elicit a wide range of aggressive imitation. The impact of adult R rated, sexually violent material on sexually related attitudes and beliefs was investigated in a field study that arranged for 115 college students to attend movies at campus theatres (Malamuth and Check, 1981). • 11. The Black Family In The African American Family The African American family Family dynamics across all races are complex. For the state of the black family is made even more complicated by a history rooted in slavery. Fractured families were born out of a system where husbands were taken away, jailed or killed, leaving the family weakened with a mother and/or grandmother at the helm. While these historical facts may be true; that the black family is weak, can be argued. Yet, the family for many in the black community and other communities of color extend to include a large number of kin. On the other hand, it can also be argued that since families were ripped apart during the slave trade it created an opportunity for setting up networks of support and family units to include members who may not be blood related. You often hear black people refer to an elder as aunt or uncle these networks were put in place as protective factors in the event that parents were sold there was an assurance that someone would care for the children. To an extent this behavior continues to this day as we see many fathers sentenced to long jail terms for petty crimes or killed. The family structure makeup may be a blood relative and it may also be kin of another kind. LaShawnDa Pittman discusses how these factors shape the African American family and how slavery impacted the role of the mother and father within the family system. • 12. Ode To A Grecian Urn, And The Lady Of Shallot Writers ranging from the Victorian age onward have reflected the influence of art within their works. While art is significant in exhibiting the culture in which such handiwork was produced, the process of creation was often used as a coping mechanism for most artists, and sometimes an escape for those who viewed it. This such attitude is reflected within the writings from the Victorian age to modern times. Poems such as The Dolls by William Yeats, Ode to a Grecian Urn by John Keats, and The Lady of Shallot showcase this point by putting emphasis on the art itself, and its impact upon the artist or narrator. In Ode to the Grecian Urn the narrator asks who canst thus express/ a flowery tale more sweetly than our rhyme (Keats 3 4). The designs etched upon the urn seem to showcase a story, one far opposite of the toils of daily life. The narrator is drawn to the seemingly unmarred tale. In his mind s eye, the life expressed upon the container is greater than his own; heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard/ are sweeter (11 12). He wants to live the moments captured within the engravings, despite the impossibility of that happening. Bold lover, never, never canst thou kiss comes off as morbid. Yet the narrator hurries to reassure that in fact, it is a mercy to the couple, do not grieve;/ she cannot fade, thought thou hast not thy bliss/ for ever wilt thou love, and she be fair (18 20)! In the narrator s eyes, the lovers are forever caught within a precious ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. The Third Wave Feminism There are three waves of feminism. The first wave (1830 s early 1900 s) emphasized on legal issues and gaining political power including the right to vote to bring gender equality. The second wave (1960 s 1980 s) stressed on broadening the discussions to a wider range. They focused on the work place, sexuality, family, reproductive rights, domestic violence and marital rape issues. The third wave (1900 s present) expands the topic of feminism to include women with varied identities and a response to the failures of movements by second wave feminism. Rebecca Walker coined the term third wave feminism in an essay Becoming the Third Wave (1992). In the introduction to idea of third wave feminism in Manifesta authors Jennifer Baumgardner and Amy Richards suggest that feminism can change with every generation and individual. Feminists have long criticised the institution of marriage. They stated that marriage leads to oppression of women and their rights curtailed. The gender inequality is judged from the fact that mostly women take up domestic and caring work and they get paid less than men for outside work. Traditionally, all men give speech and the women surrender her name to take her husband s name. As a high profile couple, Jean Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir always expressed opposition to marriage. My Inspiration In Life My Inspiration in Life Options: Track and field coach, Laszlo Baczo I managed to get a national vice champion title thanks to his pursuance of me, and him believing in me When I was a little boy, in 2008, I watched my first Olympic games, held in Beijing. I remember sitting on the ground, next to my parents, fascinated by the opening ceremony, by the fireworks and the abundance of things that were happening at the same time. Every day after school I ran home and turned on the TV to watch the games of the Olympics. It was unbelievable! So many people doing so many events that I had never seen in my life: throwing sticks, jumping over little fences, running for hours, smashing a big metal ball in the ground and the list goes on. What fascinated me the most was the men and women who were jumping so high, that they were almost able to reach the sky with their hands while coming so close to knocking over the stick suspended in mid air in such a way that it was beauty itself. I recorded the event on a cassette and watched it over and over again until I understood the way how the athletes stepped, the method they used to jump, the style in which they were moving their body through the air, and finally how they landed gracefully on their back. It was a starting point of my lifetime goal: becoming a good High Jumper. Loss Leader Look in any newspaper circular, it is chocked full of advertisements from untold numbers of retailers who are trying to push loss leaders onto consumers. This mattress is the top of the line and you may not want to move once they get you to lay on it; in the end, you certainly will not purchase their $99.00 mattress. Competitive Advantage The industry that comes to mind when it comes to competitive advantage pricing is gas stations. Notice that most gas stations do not want to price their fuel much lower than their closest competitors do. As soon as one station raises its price, it is almost certain that the neighboring stations will follow suit within a matter of hours. What is really disturbing is that the gas stations will change their prices on the fuel that is already in the ground. A local gas station down the street from my house prices their fuel slightly more expensive than the Union 76 station down the road. I drive by both stations everyday and notice that as soon as the 76 station changes their price, up or down – but usually up, the local station nearer my house will discover this and change his price to compensate. This pricing strategy indicates that the local fuel station, as with most other fuel stations use competitive advantage to price their product. Of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The character of which I am speaking is never referred to by name, instead is called she, the woman, mommy, and wife throughout the entire story which lends credence to the conclusion of the viewpoint as being told from the outside. The first indication that the focus of the story will be not of a warm and loving nature is the line The sight of them made her so sad and sick she did not want to see them again (1). This is where a hypothesis can begin to be formed as to who the antagonist of the story is, bearing the statement above in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then in the next line there is no mention of the woman speaking to the child or acknowledging that the child ever spoke to her. The purposeful shunning of the child by the woman is appalling and baffling at the same time. The child in the story is an innocent, wanting to please and gain acknowledgement and love from the very woman that is sickened by the very sight of the child. The mysterious reasons for the shunning of the child can be guessed at in committee, but without more history as to reasoning: the idea of the woman seeing the child as the one reason for her illness is the most conclusive idea to be had. A supporting clause for the woman being ever more resentful of the child is the description given when during the course of play, the woman is scratched enough to draw a small bead or two of blood, One of his sharp little claws ripped her flesh, just above the wrist... a thin red line materialized on the inside of her pale arm and spill over with tiny beads (6). The reaction to this was not to grimace and clean her arm or to take time to trim the child s finger nails to prevent such from happening again. Instead the woman says clearly Go away (6). Then lock herself away from the child. No explanation or reason given to the child but to ignore and satisfy vengeance towards what the woman views as something that ... In fact, the car scores 94% in adult occupant protection and 89% for child passenger protection. One controversy with the otherwise perfect car is its DSG gearbox. There have been complaints about erratic shifting and rough shifting. However, the manufacturer has previously attributed this to problems of oil fouling the wiring loom controlling the gearbox. As such, when you own a Golf, it is important to conduct a thorough assessment of the gearbox once in a while just to prevent these common problems. Sunday Morning By Wallace Stevens Wallace Stevens a well known American poet once said, In poetry, you must love the words, the ideas and the images and rhythms with all your capacity to love anything at all. In these lines, Stevens beautifully reveals that poetry is all about enjoying each line and each and every part of the poem as it would give you satisfaction and love for poetry as never before. Similarly, Stevens wrote a magnificent piece of work Sunday Morning , with various pieces of literary devices to enhance his poetry making it descriptive and enjoyable to read. For example, the use of techniques such as symbolism, theme, imagery, and tone Sunday Morning displays the clash that the speaker endures as she questions the Christian religion and her discovery of love for nature. Although it is important students are excelling, it is also important that students are able to be an active participant in their own growth. Effective teachers allow students to constantly reflect on how they are doing in class and how they are meeting classroom goals. Assessment reflection ultimately influences how teachers and learners continue to access material. After teachers have tracked the data of students, it is then important that they are using a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas. Each assessment addresses a different kind of learner. For example, the first assessment is an exit ticket that allows me to see how students have grasped information at the end of the period. • 26. A Brief Note On Internal Medicine And Nursing Essay People are my passion! I wake up each morning praying that I make a positive impact in someone s life. The value of my life lies not on personal achievement and possessions but on how profitable I have been to my neighbor and my world. This belief, no doubt has influenced my choice of career and specialty. Internal medicine is my number one specialty. I love this specialty because it provides me the opportunity to solve varied medical problems ranging from acute care to management of chronic disease. Just like solving a puzzle, an internist applies critical thinking, sound science in preventing, diagnosing and treating varied adult diseases. Internal Medicine is an ever evolving discipline and requires continuous and persistent updating of one s knowledge. This sits well with my massive appetite of reading. I enjoy the challenges the specialty presents. I love the fact that an internist provides consults to other physicians in disease diagnosis and work as primary care physician. The broad subspecialties in internal medicine match and exceeds my perception of a complete doctor. From a young age, my parents taught me to care and serve others. As per the requirement, we have to implement 150 cameras in the network. So we have to have huge bandwidth in our network to transfer the data from 150 cameras. By implementing the technology called Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN), we can save the bandwidth of our LAN. VLAN means a group of devices on one or more logically segmented LANs (configured by use of management software), enabling devices to communicate as if attached to the same physical medium, when they are actually located on numerous different LAN segments. VLANs are based on logical instead of physical connections and thus are tremendously flexible. There are two types of VLANs. 1. End to End VLANs 2. Local VLANs End to End VLANs

The Black Cat Pluto s Transformation The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe is about an unnamed narrator who claims to be sane, but ironically tells the story of his transformation from a compassionate individual into a murderer. The narrator lives with his caring wife and many pets, including a large black cat named Pluto. The friendship between the narrator and Pluto changes when the narrator heavily indulges in alcohol. His intemperance takes a toll on his psychological well being, as it sparks in him a spirit of perverseness: doing something that is wrong just for the sake of being wrong. This force, in the same way, allows the narrator to deal with his drunkenness through logical reasoning, which motivates him to murder Pluto. The narrator then invites into his home a new cat ... Feminist Theory Applied to Hamlet Representing Ophelia: Women, Madness, and the Responsibilities of Feminist Criticism Elaine Showalter Though she is neglected in criticism, Ophelia is probably the most frequently illustrated and cited of Shakespeare s heroines. Her visibility as a subject in literature, popular culture, and painting, from Redon who paints her drowning, to Bob Dylan, who places her on Desolation Row, to Cannon Mills, which has named a flowery sheet pattern after her, is in inverse relation to her invisibility in Shakespearean critical texts. According to David Leverenz, in an important essay called The Woman in Hamlet. Hamlet s disgust at the feminine passivity in himself is translated into violent revulsion against women, and into his brutal behaviour towards Ophelia. Ophelia s suicide, Leverenz argues, then becomes a microcosm of the male world s banishment of the female, because woman represents everything denied by reasonable men. To liberate Ophelia from the text, or to make her its tragic center, is to re appropriate her for our own ends; to dissolve her into a female symbolism of absence is to endorse our own marginality; to make her Hamlet s anima is to reduce her to a metaphor of male experience. I would like to propose instead that Ophelia does have a story of her own that feminist criticism can tell; it is neither her life story, nor her love story, nor Lacan s story, but rather the history of her representation. This essay tries to bring together some of the categories of French feminist thought about the feminine with the empirical energies of American historical and critical research; to yoke French theory and Yankee knowhow. Tracing the iconography of Ophelia in English and French painting, photography, psychiatry, and literature, as well as in theatrical production, I will be showing first of all the representational bonds between female insanity and female sexuality. He attempted to seek for the acceptable compromises between all and each mode to define a better way of understanding the social world. Hollis clearly states that the key task of this book is to reflect on the underlying philosophy of social science through the critical examination of the theory and methodology in each approach. Some of the key questions are; whether the study of social science can use the same method as in natural science, does structure determine an action or does action determines structure in the process of social changes, and is there such a thing as the universal strategy to help social scientists in understanding the way of the world. The main theme focuses on Explanation and Understanding with the minor theme of Holism and Individualism. The book initially gives the impression that each social study approach has its strength and weakness that the combination of approaches would be beneficial and worth pursuing. Phytophthora ramorum Susceptibility as Measure of Leaf Age by Primary Reservoir Host California Bay Laurel Abstrct Sudden Oak Death, a disease caused by the protist Phytophthora ramorum has contributed significantly to the degradation of Oak Woodland communities from Oregon to California since its invasion in 1995, yet many questions remain about their primary reservoir host Umbellularia .Californica. U. Californica leaves resulted in an increased susceptibility with from first to past years leaf growth while the water content within the leaf had no influence on the magnitude of necrosis. Introduction Sudden Oak Death, a disease caused by the protist Phytophthora ramorum, is sweeping through California, dismantling Oak Woodland communities. First observed in Germany and the Netherlands infecting species of Rhododendron and Viburnum, symptoms of the pathogen include; the browning of leaves, large bleeding cankers, and mortality in several species (Harmon). In the Central Coast of California, host species include, but are not limited to, the Quercus sp., Notholithocarpus sp., and Umbellularia sp. Quercus and Notholithocarpus being terminal host and Umbellularia being a reservoir host (DiLeo). Within the genus Phytophthora, species have different morphology, but several have been associated with oak mortality. For example, in California, P. cinnimomi, P. cactorum, and P. citricula can cause root and crown rot in oaks. Proliferation of these Phytophthora sp. were seen in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One common theme in these kingdoms and empires was a belief in life after death as can be seen in ancient tombs all over China. So people had to pay homage to and care for the dead. • 44. Comparing Dystopic Worlds in George Orwell s 1984 and Ray... Imagine this, a perfect world of complete harmony and justice. There is no wrong, and there is no right. There is only utopia. It might be the perfect place where people want to live, or the place that people dream about. It might even be the picture of the future. However, this Utopian world is revealed to have flaws. It lacks many of the qualities of life that exist today. Thus the Utopian world isn t so Utopian anymore. And the more that is revealed about the world, the more horrible it becomes. Soon, it becomes a nightmare, a world of illusions, of lies. That is the dystopic world that authors such as Bradbury and George Orwell pictures in their books, a world that exists under the image of utopia, and yet to the reader seems like a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This way of thinking is also twisted in a sense, because totalitarian governments do not care for the well being of its people. The people who rule only want power. That is why the reader realizes that the piece of literature is dystopic. In Fahrenheit 451, the totalitarian government controls the police, mechanical hounds, and the firemen. The firemen act under the wishes of the government to burn people s books. An explanation of the firemen is revealed in Beatty s quote, ...there was no longer need of firemen for the old purposes. They were given the new job, as custodians of out peace of mind, the focus of our understandable and rightful dread of being inferior: official censors, judges, and executors. That s you, Montag, and that s me (58, 59). Beatty is explaining the reason that governments created firemen to burn books. The government can censor information that the public receives with the creation of the firemen, and it is the job to the people and the firemen to do their duties without question. That illustrates the totalitarian government in the society of Fahrenheit 451. In 1984, the totalitarian government is led by a figure, Big Brother. The Inner Party and the Outer Party are also part of the totalitarian government, only consisting of 15% of the population of Oceania. • 46. Allusion In The Rich Brother By Tobias Wolff The Rich Brother by Tobias Wolff is about two brothers who are polar opposite in appearance and perception. The story alluded to the biblical story of Cain and Abel, which was the outline of the story. The story poses the question of who is the rich brother by showing both Donald and Pete in ways that the reader could perceive them as wealthy. The true rich brother comes down to a personal meaning of wealth, but based on the use of biblical allusion, most will side with Donald. Due to the allusion, the reader can infer that Donald was the rich brother, because he was symbolic of Abel who was murdered by his brother. It s more beneficial to be rich in optimism and happiness, and this theme was expressed throughout the story by its use of biblical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This idea relates to the story of Cain and Abel, Jacob and Esau, Joseph and all of his brothers, where family competition is a big component to the meaning of each story. Most biblical and present day examples of sibling rivalry are due to jealousy between one and another. In The Rich Brother, Donald is perfectly content with his life. Even though he is mostly wandering around aimlessly, he is genuinely happy and is optimistic. Pete on the other hand is successful; he has money, a family, and has a real role in society. Yet, he is still somewhat empty and striving for a feeling of completeness. By seeing his younger brother who he perceives as stupid, immature, and a nuisance, as happy as he was, Pete became jealous of Donald s happiness and contentment with his non materialistic life. Even though Donald wasn t successful in any configuration, he seemed fulfilled and that upset Pete. Even after Pete left Donald alone at the end of the story, Pete still felt incomplete, and he seemed to regret leaving his brother out to die. Wolff was trying to get the reader to see that Pete would never live a satisfied life because of how he always looked at the glass half empty. Whether he thought of picking Donald up from the religious farm as a way to spend more time together, rather than a burden, he could have turned the experience into a joyful one. If Pete had been more optimistic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. The, And, By Ernest Holmes Ernest Holmes addresses a trepidation we may have when giving: our resources will be temporarily depleted. It is common sense that the more we give, the less we have; but there is a principle at work which defies common sense, because the appearance of loss and lack is deceptive. Once we have sown a seed our hands are empty, but the soil is full and soon we will have our hands full with the harvest of that seed. If we had held onto that seed, there would be no harvest and we would eventually be empty handed. However, giving in a principled manner does not incur a loss, but gains. Giving, as a matter of principle, is the difference between gaining more or having less. Of course, if we go through the motions of giving appearing to give, but actually throwing money away in an unprincipled manner, then we have simply wasted our time, and our treasure. Not every seed sown, grows; some fall on hard, stony ground and never take root. Not every prayer is heard and answered; some fall on deaf ears our own. Having ears, we hear not. Having eyes, we see not. And having our hands full, we give not. It is a shame, because we could give, have and enjoy more. DIMINISHED EXPECTATIONS Holmes relates the responsiveness of Life to the idea that Nature abhors a vacuum. In an infinite universe, there cannot be an empty void, a place where God is not. All space, all vessels, all containers must be filled with something. So, when something is drawn out of one place, more is drawn ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
