Lumbriculus Viegatus Lab Report
Lumbriculus variegatus, also known as blackworms, reproduce by asexual fragmentation in a lab
setting. They are easy to handle and keep alive, needing only fresh spring water every few days. They
are viewed under a stereomicroscope and slowed down by exposure to ice water for easier cutting.
The object of the experiment was to test whether the amount of segments left in a cut worm affected
the regeneration rate of the worm. We cut the worms into small and long anterior and posterior
fragments, along with separating the heads and tails. We predicted the pieces of worms with the most
segments (the long anterior and long posterior) would survive and regenerate better than the smaller
sections. Our results showed the null hypothesis was supported because the short anterior segments
grew the most. The reason for this occurrence may be the worms survival, regardless of segment
length, is unpredictable. This would also offer an explanation as to why our control worms died in the
end of the experiment.
Introduction
Lumbriculus variegatus, also known as blackworms or California blackworms, are known for their
abilities to regenerate. Lumbriculus variegatus are in the phylum Annelida, class Oligochaeta, order
Lumbriculidae, family Lumbriculidae, and genus Lumbriculus variegatu. (Drewes 2004). Blackworms
are easy to maintain, needing only spring creek water to keep them alive. A blackworm has about 150
to 250 segments on its body, which is about 10 centimeters long (Drewes 2004).

Louisiana Chemicals Affect Human Health
Louisiana Chemicals: Sources and Human Health
Piers A. Cropp
Lynn University
Following the industrial revolution, societies across the world began to notice strange effects on
individuals throughout certain local communities. Though toxicology was a relatively new and
rudimentary practice at the time, scientists were able to trace these effects back to chemicals being
exposed to industrial workers, their families, and nearby neighborhoods. Unfortunately, industry in the
United States continued to expand with little regard for the effects on human health. As a result from
this expansion the amount of chemicals released into the atmosphere skyrocketed continuously all the
way to present day society. However, as industry expanded so did scientific technology, the
understanding of chemicals, their exposure ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ammonia inhalation causes upper respiratory irritation. In a study conducted in 1973, four of six
participants admitted to experiencing irritation of the nose and eyes after an exposure to 50 ppm of
ammonia for 10 minutes. Thirty percent of the participants described nose, eye, and throat irritation at
an exposure of 75 ppm for 5 minutes. However, low occupational exposure over a period of about
fourteen years showed no effect on pulmonary function. However, rare cases of high concentrated
exposure show sever effects. For example, around 1989 an adult male was found unconscious next to
a ruptured pipeline carrying liquid ammonia. He suffered burns on his eyes as well as his skin, and
experienced difficulty breathing. Throughout the following month, he suffered from cases of complete
circulatory collapse (which he was resuscitated from) and eventually died from cardiac arrest.
Exposure to high concentrations of ammonia (2,500 ppm) can potentially lead to cardiovascular
problems including: elevated pulse, rise in blood pressure, and cardiac

Sam Taylor is Ryder who is now a head of Blue Veins Society. Blue Veins Society is a group for light

Industrial robots Industrial robots are robots used in an industrial manufacturing environment.
Usually, these are articulated arms specifically developed for such applications as welding, material
handling, painting and others. If we judge purely by application this type could also include some
automated guided vehicles and other robots.
2. Domestic or household robots Robots used at home. This type of robots includes many quite
different devices such as robotic vacuum cleaners, robotic pool cleaners, sweepers, gutter cleaners and
other robots that can do different chores. Also, some surveillance and telepresence robots could be
regarded as household robots if used in that environment.
3. Medical robots Robots used in medicine and medical institutions. First and foremost surgery robots.
Also, some automated guided vehicles and maybe lifting aides.
4. Service robots Robots that don t fall into other types by usage. These could be different data
gathering robots, robots made to show off technologies, robots used for research, etc.
5. Military robots Robots used in the military. This type of robots includes bomb disposal robots,
different transportation robots, reconnaissance drones. Often robots initially created for military
purposes can be used in law enforcement, search and rescue and other related

Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe Fannie Flag...
Racism deeply affects how people are treated. Because of the color of someone s skin, people are
often looked at treated and differently. In the novel Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Café,
Fannie Flag illustrates the Racism as a theme in many different ways. The stories start off with the
introduction of two women, Ninny and Evelyn who meet in a nursing home, and Ninny tells the tales
of her days back in the whistle stop café, around the 1920 s. Throughout the story the appearance and
mention of the Ku Klux Klan appears at various times, and black men are given food out the back
door, while the white men are fed inside at the tables; how black people were viewed at the time was
transparent; they were thought of as lower people, and they were treated like dirt. Racism impacts how
people are treated and people who are subjected to it to have less opportunities, resulting in a poorer
quality of life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People treat others differently based on the color of their skin. The author showcases this throughout
the novel, through the lives of Artis and Jasper, twin siblings who have extensively different
complexions than one another, The oldest son, whom she named Jasper, was the color of a creamy cup
of coffee, and the other one, named Artis, was black as coal (97). Coffee is typically thought of as
something warm and pleasant, while coal is dark and grimy. This may be considered a metaphor for
their lives, as Jasper s was always warm and welcoming, and Artis pathway was dark, he saw horrible
things in his time even though he was well behaved. People treated Jasper with much more respect
than his brother, Artis, and the sole reason was obvious. Because of the color of someone s skin, they
are likely to be subjected to unfair assumptions, which leads to unequal

The Medieval Era Essay example
The Medieval Era The Medieval era is so easily generalized into the three orders of those who fight,
those who work, and those who pray, or even simply divided into the privileged and unprivileged.
These distinctions are important, for the ability of the church and manor to influence a peasant s
actions and to take a peasant s earnings was obviously a central component of a peasant s life.
However, when peasants constituted such a sizable majority of the population (over 90 percent), it is
also important to recognize the distinctions among them. Some peasants were free and some were
serfs. Some peasants were well off and some were barely subsisting. Some peasants held manorial
offices and some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through recording land sales and inheritances, the courts rolls explain the economic status of certain
peasants, and through recording contracts and crimes committed, they can describe relationships
between peasants. For example, Bennett writes, Cecilia illegally took hay off the land of Richard
Everard; she let her animals trespass onto the property of others; she argued with Alice Baker, (103).
Again, the records are factual but anything that goes beyond the written word is an inference subject
to interpretation and generalization. Bennett also uses poems and songs throughout the text. Clues
about how privileged people regarded peasants can be found in their courtly songs, sarcastic proverbs,
nasty jokes, and pious sermons, writes Bennett (3). However, these only tell about the generalized
negative opinions of elites regarding peasants. Personal diaries and letters are missing from the book
because almost all peasants were illiterate. Therefore, sources used are for the most part objective and
lack emotion. This takes away from the reader s ability to connect with Cecilia as a person. The reader
knows that Cecilia was allowed many more rights since she never married, but they do not know if she
enjoyed her individuality or

The Hard Facts Of The Grimms Fairy Tales
The four themes that Maria Tatar argues in her book The Hard Facts of the Grimms Fairy Tales are 1.
Rise of national identity and culture 2.Dissolution 3. Political and religious refugees and 4. Change in
technology. With all four of these being relevant to the time, it sets up the importance of the remake of
the fairy tale. We have to look critically at where we are and where we are going because of our pop
culture and politics.
While some may argue that fairy tales have become less important to society as we are advancing in
technology there are some that still strike important meaning to this day. Fairy tales in this day have
often become associated with 1) Disney and 2) princess culture. And while there is nothing wrong
with these, in fact I am a huge fan of both of them myself, as a result many other fairy tales have been
pushed into the background. One such fairy tale is The Emperor s New Clothes, originally written
down by Hans Christian Andersen in 1837. This tale is able to examine how social media is changing
our interactions as well as talk about the political climate in which we now live in. This then makes it
the perfect candidate for a modern remake movie. The american public is the becoming the emperor as
we lose sight of what s really import by social media consumption, while the current political climate
is the people who are promising to make us robes. (target is millenials and gen z, they need to identify

Neoclassicism and the Enlightenment Essay
Neoclassicism and the Enlightenment
The Enlightenment was a time of great innovation and evolution. One of the most significant
movements which owes at least the majority of its beginnings to the Enlightenment is the architectural
and artistic movement of Neoclassicism. This Neoclassicism of the mid eighteenth to mid nineteenth
centuries is one that valued ancient Greek, Roman, and
Etruscan artistic ideals.
These ideals, including order, symmetry, and balance, were considered by many European generations
to be the highest point of artistic excellence. Although many movements in European art were largely
devoid of classical characteristics, they were always looked to as sources of inspiration and were
revived as significant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The pettiness of these movements had created a backlash and these thinkers and art critics welcomed
the harsher and more ordered Neoclassical style as they began to swing the art pendulum in the
opposite direction.
One of the primary causes in the rise of Neoclassicism in the mid eighteenth century was the
expansion of what was previously called a classical education. By 1750 Italian tourism was already a
full blown industry, with guides and guidebooks circulating throughout
Europe. As a part of any young man s education, he now had to make the artistic tour of Italy,
especially Florence, Rome, and Naples. This was not just a quick visit to a couple museums; rather, it
was a lengthy, often times more than a year, and in depth study of the rich trove of art that these cities
had to offer. It was supplemented with classes and lectures at the museums and time taken after these
to sketch or paint these precious works to take home. The proliferation of these sketches would
compound and any aspiring artist was also then required to study these works. The increased influence
and awareness of Greek and Roman art in the studies of the developing artists would soon begin to
show in their designs.
One of the most significant reasons that a renewed interest in Italy has arisen was the recently found
sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
The excavation of these sites revealed massive amounts

Biohazard Cleanup Research Paper
When it comes to biohazard cleanup, many people either envision a team coming in to clean up a
chemical spill or a team cleaning up after a murder or other serious crime. Chemical spills and crime
scene cleanup are only a small portion of the services offered by biohazard teams. Here are two other
reasons why you may need the services of a biohazard cleanup team.
Mold
Whether you are moving into a new home with mold damage or you have noticed mold damage in
your current home, getting rid of that mold as soon as possible is important. Unfortunately, untreated
mold can lead to an assortment of health issues. This may include mold induced asthma, skin
infections, and fungal sinus infections.

Toss moldy items. This may include clothing, towels, and rags. It may also include shower curtains or
other bathroom items. While some items can be cleaned, often throwing them out is the safest and
easiest solution.
Odors
Most people will experience undesirable odors in their home at some point. You can often get rid of
these unpleasant odors simply by throwing out items and cleaning up messes. Unfortunately, these bad
smells can stick around and may require a more thorough cleaning, sometimes by a biohazard team.
Fortunately, simply keeping your home clean is one of the top ways to prevent bad smells from
sticking around your house. There are a few steps you can do to prevent bad odors in your home.
Regularly go through your refrigerator and pantry, throwing out food that is no longer good. Rather
than throwing it in your kitchen garbage, where it is likely to make your whole kitchen stink, take the
food to an outdoor trash or dumpster.
Clean up after your pets. For many people, their pets are an integral part of their family. Unfortunately,
pets can also be a smelly part of your family. Make sure your dog gets a bath regularly. Keep any pet
cages or tanks clean. If your pet has an accident in your house, clean it up right away. The sooner you
discover the problem, the less time it will have to seep into your flooring.
Open windows and doors, and otherwise air out your home when you are cooking smelly foods, such
as fish.
Of course, there are many

Garveyism and Rastafarianism Essay
Garveyism and Rastafarianism
I. Introduction
In the twentieth century, two movements have emerged out of Jamaica in protest of black oppression
and slavery, both mental and physical. The first to evolve was Garveyism, founded by Marcus Garvey,
and was born in the aftermath of the First World War.
Rastafarianism was the second movement to emerge, lead by Leonard Howell during the depression
years of the 1930 s. Garveyism and Rastafarianism are both resistance movements based on the same
ideal: consciousness and essentialism of Africa and its descendants. The founding brethren of the
Rastafari movement were Garveyites themselves, although not members of the Universal Negro

Garvey s aim was to recontextualize particular aspects of seeming irreconcilable systems of
Marxism/Leninism, monarchism, and even of National Socialism for the African of Africa American
experience (Zips, 224). Garvey did not feel restricted by established political ideologies, instead he
felt free to pick out the best attributes of every government. Ultimately, Garveyism hoped to develop
the African continent into a modern network of nations, modeling it after the United States and
Western Europe (Lewis, 146).
Garvey established the UNIA in Jamaica in the year 1914, two years later he left for the United States
in order to gain more momentum for his movement and spread the African unity he had started in
Jamaica. Before leaving Jamaica, Garvey made a prophecy of sorts to his followers: Look into Africa
for the crowning of a black king. He shall be the Redeemer (Barrett, 67). From this prediction stems
most of the discrepancy between Garveyites and Rastafarians, something I will discuss later in this
paper.
The four main themes that the Garvey movement was built upon were 1) Africa for Africans at home
and abroad, 2) unity, 3) self reliance, and 4) retaining their black pride in the presence of whites
(Chevannes, 95). Garvey brought this ideology with him to the United States where he founded an
American branch of the UNIA in 1917 and furthered his initiatives

How Does Truman Capote Use Syntax In The In Cold Blood
Truman Capote s In Cold Blood recounts the brutal murder of the Clutter family on November 15,
1959. However, Capote does not just detail the murder; he dramatizes it by shifting the focus from the
victims to the culprits. Through his use of syntax, diction and appeals to pathos, Capote achieves his
purpose of evoking sympathy in his audience for murderers Richard Dick Hickock and Perry Smith.
The way in which Truman Capote utilizes syntax throughout the novel gives insight to the true
character of the murderers. Following the murder, Perry Smith recalls, certain sounds returned a silver
dollar rolling across a floor, boot steps on hardwood stairs, and the sounds of breathing, the gasps, the
hysterical inhalations of a man with a severed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Capote excellently creates sympathy through his use of syntax by incorporating subordinate elements
into his writing, evolving his pace from smooth to staccato, and using syntax styles that mimic the
character s individuality. He also made crucial choices in vocabulary and grammar that contributed to
the sincerity and intent of the character at hand. Lastly, Capote stresses the loving home lives of the
murderers, evoking a sense of warm heartedness in the reader. His use of diction, syntax and appeals
to pathos in order to create sympathy for the murderers is effective in that it provoked the audience to
question the true motives of the murderers. Capote depicts the cold blooded culprits, Perry more so
than Dick, as honorable men; this evokes sympathy in the reader, for the loving, caring, respectful
nature both Dick and Perry exude would not be found in a brutal murderer. This leaves the reader is
disbelief, provoking him to then question the good and evil within himself, wondering if he too will
suffer a similar fate to that of Dick Hickock and Perry

The United States Should Oppose of the Yucca Mountain Repository For years, the State of Nevada

Fashion Values In The Fashion Industry
The current reality of clothing production, called fast fashion, is the industry standard of mass
producing luxury styles in a matter of weeks. To do so, clothes are churned out quickly using poor
quality materials. This is problematic because of the large amount of unnecessary environmental
damage that this business model causes. The fashion industry should abandon the current trend of fast
fashion and disposable clothing to decrease the amount of hazardous environmental waste created.
The fashion industry should adopt slow fashion values that aim to cut excess consumer waste by
changing the current societal norms around fashion buying and clothing disposal. Fast fashion has
become the pinnacle of the fashion industry because it is very profitable. Cheap material and cheap
overseas labor has made places like Walmart, Zara, and H M twice as profitable as any retail store
(Cline, The Clothes Make the Movement , 21). The average American household spends one thousand
and seven hundred dollars on apparel every year. One third of the average household expense is
claimed by women aged sixteen and older who spend over five hundred dollars on clothing and shoes
annually (Bureau of Labor Statistics). That dollar amount translates into an average of sixty eight
items of clothing and seven pairs of shoes per the average American (Cline, The Clothes Make the
Movement , 21). Cheap textile materials quickly fall apart, lose color and shape, and are replaced by
new fashion trends.

Muhammad s Influence On Islam
In the year wchih followed the Revelation, Muhammad began his public preaching. The first converts
include his wife Khadija, cousin Ali, other people closely related to him, and eventually more people
from his own clan of Hashim. At first there was no sign of opposition against Muhammad s teaching,
but as it become more widespread in Mecca, people start seeing it as a threat to the city s stability.
Muhammad s message about a single, all powerful deity negates the legitimacy of the haram and its
idols, puting the holy and neutral status of the site at risk. This theological clash continued to put
pressure on Muhammad and his followers. However, they receive protection because of the solidity of
the clan system. It had been Abu Talib, Muhammad s uncle, who united the Hashim in support of
Muhammad and protected him for his Meccan opposition.
In 619, both Khadija and Abu Thalib, two of Muhammad s most important protecters passed away and
his opposition became even more bold and determined to pressure Muhammad. It is important to
remember that the previous early success of the spread of Islam in Mecca could only be achieved
because of Muhammad s allegience and close relationship with these two important Meccan figures.
In other words, Muhammad s kinship paved the way for his teachings to be disemminated within the
Meccan society. As Meccans become more hostile towards Muhammad, he began to look outside his
native city for support. At this crucial point, Muhammad was

Issue on Marijuana Essay example
Legalization of Marijuana in the United States is an ongoing topic that has been going on for several
years. There are vast majority of Americans who are for this move and against this move. While each
side has several good arguments to defend their case, neither one has a distinct advantage over the
other. I will be going over several arguments or point of views as well will have several facts about the
effects of Marijuana whether it is good or bad.

assumption that Marijuana is a harmful drug and receive heavy criticism because of stereotypical view

It has also proven to be able to bring in a substantial amount of revenue for certain states. However
Marijuana does have its negative effects on the human body. Marijuana causes physical effects which
includes increased heart and pulse rate, bloodshot eyes, and dry throat and mouth. Studies have shown
that the earlier age people decide to use marijuana the more likely they will experiment with other
drugs, and lose interest and are unmotivated to do any kind of schoolwork. It decreases your ability to
drive by slowing down your ability to think properly and slows down you reflexes. Studies have also
determined after long continued use individuals can become burnt out which makes the individual
dull, slow moving, and inattentive.
Marijuana has its pro s but it also has its cons. In its entirety it s an individual s opinion on whether or
not it s good for society. To this day there have been several determinations about the legalization of
Marijuana in the United States, and the causes and effects it has on society. Mendocino County is
known for growing Marijuana in the state of California and is legal for the most part due to the
medical use. Cartels however are using this to their advantage and are growing weed within the county

The Effect Of Body Condition On Postpartum Interval
Introduction There has been a long history of the effect of body condition on postpartum interval;
however, there have been limited reports to elucidate the interaction between body condition score and
follicular populations and how this affects postpartum interval. Postpartum Interval is defined as the
period of sexual rest during which the reproductive system is mainly quiescent. Follicular
development is minimal; the corpora lutea, although identifiable, have regressed and are non
functional. Secretions are scanty and viscous, the cervix is constricted, and the vaginal mucosa is pale
(Sheldon, 2002). A major obstacle in maintaining a 12 mo calving interval for beef producers,
particularly for those using Brahman females, is the long duration of the postpartum anestrous period.
In order to curb this, a postpartum animal must recover from the suppressive effects of gestation and
parturition on the pituitary, ovarian and endocrine systems (Browning et al., 1994). Pituitary and
ovarian function in suckled beef cows may return within 4 to 5 wk after calving (McNatty, 1988;
Wright et al., 1990). Nutrition is a major factor controlling the length of the postpartum acyclicity
(Randel, 1990). When an animal gains or losses body condition the amount of leptin in blood is
changed (Amstalden et al., 2000; Amstalden et al., 2005), due to the increase in adipocytes, thus
affecting the release of GnRH; and thereby affecting oogenesis, follicular maturation and ovulation

Islamic Laws And Islamic Law Essay
Analysis For the purpose of this analysis I am going to compare each nations legal tradition, and
provide the definition of the rule of law. Iran is considered to be an Islamic country, a country that
practices a sacred legal tradition and more specifically Islamic law. In this type of legal tradition there
is no separations between religious and legal entities. Islamic law is proclaimed as the basis for all
law, including harsh Islamic criminal law, punishment that is based on retribution (Dammer, Albanese
p. 57,58). In Iran, there is a great influence to have Shari a law further integrated in to the national law,
the Quran is the Muslim s holy book and therefore is considered to be the most important source in
Shai a law (Dammer, Albanese p. 57,58). The Quran is around 6,000 versus, although only 80 of those
could be considered legal terms (Amin, 1985a, p. 9). Islamic law is unique compared to other legal
traditions due to the fact that it is not based or representative of customs or traditions, such as those
legal traditions that are based on code law, such as the Civil law that is practiced in Italy and much of
the Western World (Dammer, Albanese, 2014). Italy s legal tradition was based on codified Roman
law. The civil code of 1942 replaced the original code of 1865; Italy currently practices a Civil law
tradition. Civil law tradition is the compound of a multitude of several distinct elements and sub
traditions. The oldest sub tradition was Roman law, which included

the war. However, it was not until the summer of 1917 that he found his true voice. Owen is widely
recognized as one of the greatest voices of WWI. The Wilfred Owen Association was formed in 1989
to commemorate Wilfred Owen s life and work. The poems for which Owen is remembered for were
written in a period between August 1917 and September 1918. Owen self appointed himself with the
task of speaking out for the men in his care. He did this by showing the pettiness of war, which Owen
also expressed his distaste for the war in his letters home. Owen s somber practically, energy and
umbrage, his humanity are blatant in many of his well known poems. As well as his great technical

Voltaire s Use Of Satire In Candide
In his novel Candide, Voltaire attacks a plethora of philosophies, religions, and groups. Through the
book s tragic adventure, Voltaire satirizes nearly every character that Candide encounters in order to
reveal the absurdities of the Enlightenment Era in which Voltaire lives. He uses several means of satire
to reveal the foolishness of various ideas and the absurdity of following any one idea to an extreme
extent. Through his work, Voltaire hopes to expose the reader to the irrationality and vices of the
world in which he lives, while using literary techniques to illuminate his claims. The most ubiquitous
literary technique used by Voltaire is exaggeration. Voltaire includes plenty of hyperboles that serve to
subtly attack his adversaries by poking satirical fun at their beliefs. We can find a very strong sense ...

He does this to ridicule different people and ideas, while also providing historical context for the
reader to relate to. Voltaire became frustrated by the wrongdoing and unexplainable disasters that he
observed in the world. One of the real world disasters that Voltaire included in Candide was the
horrific earthquake in Lisbon in 1755. Thousands of people died during this tragic earthquake. Voltaire
highlights the corruption of people in times of disaster, and the recurrence of Pangloss s blind
optimism. Voltaire shows the sailor (who was just saved by the Anabaptist) recklessly diving into the
rubble of the earthquake searching for money. The sailor then gets drunk and pays a woman for sex
(Voltaire 33). Pangloss then argues that For all this (the earthquake) is a manifestation of the rightness
of things . . . for it is impossible for things not to be where they are, because everything is for the best
(Voltaire 35). The sailor s actions and Pangloss s words articulate Voltaire s view that through

ONE COUNTRY, ONE BROKEN DREAM.

Simon Bolivar has been considered by many historians as the liberator of the Americas, he lead an
army that liberated Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia from the Spanish rule. Bolivar
dreamed in having these countries unified as one big country called The Gran Colombia . These
countries would have shared a centralized government and would have had the city of Bogota as its
capital.
In this article I want to explore the reasons why he could not achieve this dream of unifying these
countries and if he had what economic and social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With magnanimous sincerity, San Martin offered to place himself and his soldiers under Bolivar s
command if he would send the full Colombian army to drive the Spanish out of Peru. Unfortunately
for the patriot cause, Bolivar apparently regarded San Martin as a rival and an antagonist rather than
as a comrade in arms, an obstacle to be removed before his own fame and glory were compromised by
sharing them with another. Bolivar refused the incredibly selfless offer, saying that his delicacy would
not allow him to command San Martin, and that the Colombian Congress would not permit him to
leave Colombia to pursue the war in Peru. San Martin also indicated in an interview that he San
Martin, a keen reader of men, immediately perceived the arrogance and raw ambition that lay behind
the mask of courtly civility and empty excuses. Years later, in 1840, while living in voluntary exile in
France, the general confided his candid assessment of Bolivar s character to a visitor, Captain Lafond
de Lurcy of the French navy:
At first sight his personal appearance prejudiced me against him. He appeared to have much pride,

My Experience For My Volunteer Experience
For my volunteer experience I chose to go to YMCA which stands for Young Men s Christian
Association. Their mission is to make a healthy body, mind and spirit through their Christian
principles. Their main focus in on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The
reason I chose YMCA is because I try to live a healthy lifestyle and as that is their mission at YMCA it
will be interesting to see what I will learn when I volunteer. Before the experience I thought I would
volunteer by fundraising for a cause they support or help provide services in the gym. I also thought I
might work with customers in the front desk. I was hoping to work with the children in the sports
teams to help coach and teach them more about the sport.
I stated to the YMCA manager that I need to volunteer because it is an assignment I have for college.
She was very lenient on what I would like to do and let me choose from a plethora of options. I was
told that I will be able to switch positions throughout the day since it was for my class and it would
make it more of a learning experience for me.
The day I went in for volunteering, I was positioned as a phone attendant answering phone calls to
anyone who had questions about YMCA, I was given a packet of information to be able to answer
those questions. I answered my first call and was able to successfully help the person with their
question but I did not enjoy this position as much because it felt more like work than volunteering.

Holistic Design Essays
Holistic Design
Thesis: Design is the root of action; if we can creatively construct our products and systems with
purpose and understanding of the processes and side effects of these systems, we can improve our
relationship to the natural world.
Introduction to Industrial Design
Our modern lives are full of manufactured products. Nearly everything that surrounds us in our day to
day lives is born of intense industrial processes, yet rarely do we think of the systems that support our
lifestyles. Finding a single action in a day that does not somehow depend on fossil fuels is nearly
impossible. Everything we use, eat, or come in contact with has either been shipped or manufactured
(or both) far away from where we live, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Never before has the sustenance of a culture imposed detrimental effects on such a worldwide scale as
our own (Chiras, 2001). Our daily negligence and blind support of industrial systems of design is
destroying the natural world that supports us.
There are several problems with industrial design and processes. Primarily, industrial design is not
case specific. It cares not for bioregional differences, but tends to value strength. Take for example
clothing detergents. Water in different areas has differing degrees of mineral concentrations. Water
with lower concentrations of minerals, as may be found in the northwestern United States, requires
less detergent than water in the Southwest to clean clothing. However, detergent has a universal
dosage and strength despite these regional differences (McDonough 2002, p. 29). Excess detergent can
contaminate waterways and alter aquatic ecosystems. Another example is lawn fertilization. Many
people over fertilize their lawns in order to improve the color, which can harm aquatic life when
runoff occurs. Many of these people also throw away their clippings after mowing, effectively
removing nutrients from their lawns. Now the fertilization is required again. These homeowners are
now increasing their dependence on industrial systems while hurting natural systems, instead of
utilizing natural systems, which would decrease their need for industrial

Lab Report: Ohm s Law Series Circuits Introduction
Theory:
Ohm s law defines the relationship between three important electrical properties namely: voltage,
current and resistance. Mathematically, ohm s law is expressed as: V=IR. By understanding the
importance of conduction, one is able to determine the total resistance and visualize how resistors are
connected in parallel circuits. In parallel connection, each resistor provides a separate path for current
[I] so that the total resistance of a parallel circuit is reduced as more resistors are connected in parallel.
In contrast, the resistance in series circuits increases when more resistors are introduced into the
circuit. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In effect, the resistor was aligned horizontally with the first end. A black wire extension (from the
negative polarity of the power supply) was connected vertically from one end of the last resistor
plugged into the first set of holes just below the blue line albeit aligned differently from the red wire
(Figure 1). Figure 1: Circuit diagram
A digital multimeter was used to measure voltage by connecting it in parallel and series with the
components.
Analysis
Resistors connected in series are observed to share one current path. A breadboard effectively builds a
testing electrical and electronic system model. It also holds electrical components together
conveniently for practical applications.
Part 2: Measuring Resistors in Series A multimeter was connected across individual resistors and
resistance measurements were recorded. The multimeter was then connected across all the resistors
whereby measurements recorded. The values are tabulated in Table 1:
Table 1: Resistance values
Resistor Color Code Measured Value

R4=10kΩ Brown Black Orange Silver 10kΩ
For the branches shown in Figure 2, the total resistance was calculated and recorded. Afterwards, each
resistor branch was built on Multisim and the total resistance of each branch was measured and
recorded. Screenshots of each

Executive Summary
Transportation Problem involves distribution of a certain commodity from several origins to a number
of destinations. The aim in the whole process is to minimize the costs involved.
A necessary condition for the solving of the transportation problem is that the problem must be
balanced, i.e the demand for the product at the destinations must equal the capacity of the suppliers.

CHECKING THE OPERATING COSTS FOR LOS ANGELES
Using Solver amp; Excel, when we solve the Transportation problem for the supply from Oil Wells to
the refineries, we get the following Optimal Solution. The Minimum cost is $ 880 Million.
Now, we look at the minimum operating costs incurred when we ship the petroleum from the Oil
Refineries to the Distribution Centres.
Following is the solution:
The Cost incurred after shipping the petroleum to the Distribution Centres is $1570 Million. So, the
minimum cost that Texago Corporation will have to incur when they set up their refinery at Los
Angeles will be 880+1570 i.e. $2450 Million.
OPERATING COSTS FOR GALVESTON
Now, for Galveston the Shipping Costs for transporting Oil from Wells to the Refinery will be $920
Million, as solved in Excel.
Now the Minimum Shipping Costs that will be incurred when transporting Petroleum from Galveston
to the Distribution Centres turns out to be $1630 Million.
The Total Cost that has to be incurred will be $2550 Million.
CALCULATING THE SHIPPING COSTS FOR St. LOUIS

Strive For Perfection Essay
The Strive for Perfection
We live in a world that the attempt to be normal is inevitable, if you have a disability; you are told you
can t do most things, if you look different than the majority you get discriminated. Deafness is viewed
as a disability that needs to be fixed, due to a hearing society where hearing is the norm. Deafness is at
a threat for extinction, due to the push to fix it. Sometime in the near future with genetic testing
targeting to remove the deaf gene, could inversely cause the extinction of not only Deafness, but
American Sign Language as well as the Deaf community. Therefore, the attempt to be normal

Normalcy affects our everyday life; there is a need of comparison, a desire to match the normal
distribution. Normalcy is also shown in schools and the moment a child is born, Our children are
ranked in school and tested to determine where they fit into a normal curve of learning, of intelligence.
Doctors measure and weigh them to see if they are above or below average on the height and weight
curves (Davis 3). The moment a child is born, they are weighed, measured, and preceded to go
through tests to determine how healthy or how normal they are. Normalcy has been enforced the
moment a person is born to the day that they die. In other terms the ideal body, which society has
constructed, enforces normalcy. In a societal standpoint normal does not include Deaf people. They
are considered to be abnormal and disabled, but in contrast, individuals who are Deaf are anything but
disabled, it is a societal disability. If every human were born with the inability to hear, being hearing
would be considered a disability. The hard reality that many hearing individuals have a difficult time
understanding is that individuals who are born deaf are only unable to hear, they can do everything
that a normal hearing person is capable of doing. According to Lennard Davis, The disability theory
suggests that people with disabilities are not disabled by their impairments, but that the society
surrounding them creates the disability with it denies or

The introductory paragraphs are pictured as an upside down triangle, which start out with a broad
statement and narrow down to a point. Whereas a middle paragraph is more like a block, it starts out
with a broad statement but elaborates instead of narrowing down.
The main purpose is to explain the points in your thesis by not confusing the reader. Paragraphing
keeps each point separated so that one big block of explaining does not bore your reader, it also helps
the writer explain his point.
Writing big paragraphs helps the writer explore writing on their own, it makes them think and learn to
control the details, unimportant sentences, etc.

Further government needs to formulate a comprehensive policy to salvage the textile industry because
exporters and manufacturers will not benefit from GSP Plus trade facility if facing the problems like

Pakistan have to overcome complacency, inefficiency, corruption, bureaucratic bottlenecks,
infrastructure problems and energy crisis to fully exploit the potential of the GSP plus status that has
recently been given to it by the European Union, said Syed Jawaid Iqbal, Chairman, SouthAsia

The status quo also raises questions over the country s ability and preparedness to meet the demand
for textile products of EU countries and benefit fully from the GSP Plus status. Cotton s local demand
is expected to be increasing as Domestic Textile industry may require additional quantity of million
cotton bales during the year. Cotton prices are also increased to Rs.100/Munds in the local market.
These prices might further increase due to restoration of gas supply to Punjab base textile mills.

Hockey As A Hobby For Canadians Essay
What started as a hobby for Canadians, hockey has developed into the glorified sport that takes the
time of millions of people on Saturday night. Not only has this game changed the lives of people
living in the great white north; hockey itself has earned a reputation where fights and violence steal
the show. The moment where two players drop their gloves and pull up the always interfering elbow
guards could bring a whole arena to its feet. However, In the last couple years, this iconic piece of the
game has been challenged by everyone from hockey experts to hockey moms. People against the
violence would make the argument that it takes away from skilled players having to always watch out
for the notorious goon skating around the ice. Not to mention increasing injuries in the game of
hockey that are presumably linked to over physical play. These are just some of arguments against the
art of fighting in the NHL. But to keep good ratings and the millions of dollars the hockey industry
brings in each year, fighting must remain a key part of Canada s game. With hockey being invented
back in the late 1800 s, at that time there was not even the thought of having fights during a game.
Fighting was only introduced a couple years later. This forced the NHL to make rules for fighting,
giving lengthy suspension for dropping the gloves against players on the other team(Fitzpatrick). As
the years rolled on, there were only six teams in the NHL; it consisted of Toronto, Montreal,

Strategies For Raising Test Scores
This article is shows different strategies that a principal can use to help raise test scores in schools.
The strategies mentioned have been used by principals in the past and, therefore, have been successful
for schools. The authors mention six different strategies that can be helpful and certainly fall along the
lines of best practice. The strategies involved are analyzing test data, parents support score raising
efforts, constant monitoring of progress, looking at student work helps improve teaching, practice tests
all year, and good teaching is good teaching.
As I progress toward being a principal one day, I found myself with a need to figure out what to do
with test scores and how do you fix low scores. To be honest, I have not had a lot of time or practice
interpreting test scores and what those scores mean in the end. How to improve those scores was even
farther away from my thoughts? What the article brings for me is less of specific strategies and more
along the lines of good leadership for a school. I have been teaching for eighteen years and can count
on one hand the number of times I have been asked to interpret test scores and figure out strategies to
help. The last time I looked at Iowa Assessments was about six years ago and I noticed a large gap in
what we were teaching versus items that were on the test. The result of that gap analysis was changing
from a cultural approach to a much wider spread history course. On top of that, we as a

Description: This white marble statue group was made in 40 20CE and it is a masterpiece of the
sculptors of Rhodes. The sculpture shows the Laocoon, a priest of Apollo in the city of Troy together
with his young sons. The three are battling with a giant serpent that winds its coils around their bodies.
The story behind this sculpture is that during the Trojan War, the Laocoon, warned his fellow Trojans
against taking in the wooden horse left by the Greeks outside the city gates. Athena and Poseidon, who
were favouring the Greeks, sent two great sea serpents which have wrapped their coils around
Laocoon and his two sons and are killing them. From the Roman point of view, the death of these

Aeneas Definition Of Justice Essay
Plato, in the Republic, seeks to define justice while showing how justice is worthwhile and good in
itself. To him, justice is mainly centered around the idea of fulfilling appropriate roles. He describes
what justice is like in both the city and the individual, and appeals to human psychology through this
analogy. In Book IV, Plato completes this analogy by introducing justice within the individual. He
claims that justice in the city parallels justice in the individual. Justice for the individual, according to
Plato, is about the fulfillment of appropriate roles and the relationships among them. The question is if
Aeneas lived a justly life or was he unjust. The focus I will have will be how Aeneas was considered
just off the battlefield by not being distracted and progressing his people into the golden era . ... Show

Plato s definition again reuttered says, Justice as an individual is about the fulfillment of appropriate
roles and the relationships among them. Aeneas easily fulfills his role and more. Aeneas could have
given up and not gone through and abandoned his people from the beginning when he was in sorrow
that his people died but again it shows here that he in modern terminology, sucked it up . In Book I it
says, So, ran the speech. Burdened and sick at heart, He feigned hope in his look, and inwardly
contained his anguish. (Aeneid I). This quote showed that even though Aeneas was saddened by the
falling of his people that he had to hold it in and keep strong to continue to guide and comfort his
people in this time of disbelief and discomfort. There is clear evidence that Aeneas was just in his
actions but there are reasons that he could be considered unjust but the evidence is substantially
weaker in comparison to him being

The Character Analysis Of The Film Smoke Signals
It s a good day to be indigenous! (00:04:55 00:04:56) says Randy Peone, the voice of the KREZ radio,
setting the mood for the whole film, Smoke Signals. Smoke Signals is about Native Americans,
specifically Thomas Builds The Fire, played by Evan Adams, and Victor Joseph, played by Adam
Beach, that live on the Coeur d Alene Indian Reservation. The story follows these two proud to be
Indian boys all the way through their adulthood. The audience gets to see their relationship develop
from distant friends to a brother like bond. This film is a Native American masterpiece; however, I
believe that the true magic lies in the work of Evan Adams. As soon as Thomas enters on screen, the
audience falls in love. He wears two side braids, nice suits, and a huge smile plastered across his face.
At the beginning of the film, he is a happy and curious kid that is everything but refreshing to his
friend Victor. They both have known each other their entire lives. One thing that is truly captivating
about Evan s performance is his ability to truly encapsulate his character. While watching the film, one
can really see the emotion and feeling in his eyes and in his voice. In part in particular, he says, So
then he [Arnold, Victor s father] took me to Denny s. It was afternoon ya know and I still had the
Grand Slam Breakfast, two eggs, two sausages, two slices of bacon, and pancakes, and some juice,
and milk! Ya know, some days, it s a good day to die, some days, it s a good day to

Seperate but equal legislation. The Jim Crow laws were laws written to separate blacks and whites in
public areas/meant African Americans had unequal opportunities in housing, work, education, and
government. Seperate but Equal legislation was the judicial precedent established by in the Plessy v
Ferguson decision that enabled states to interpret the equal protection provision of the fourteenth
amendment as a means of establishing segregation. The blacks tried to take action to reduce the Jim
Crow laws by trying to make life better. They developed universities, churches, political appointments
and jobs.

The Progressive Reform movment included women s sufferage, food safety, safer laws, etc. All of
these were good causes. The one thing that was kind of dangerous was that the more popular the
causes were the more corrupt the politician that got involved. Reformers created new subjects in
which the could claim mastery since there were no real fields of expertise to claim superior
understanding of uran issues. Social sciences asserted scientific explanations for human behavior.
Veblen wrote A Theory of the Leisure Class and also came up with the theory of conspicuous
consumption. This theory was the spending of money on and the acquiring of luxury goods and
services to publicly display economic power either the buyer s income or the buyer s accumulated
wealth.

Examples Of Piaget Theory Of Cognitive Development
Kalie Watkins
Professor Korey Davis

Piaget Theory of Cognitive Development
Jean Piaget sought to understand and explain to others how the brain changes from birth until the mid
teens. There are so many huge developments during those years and Piaget got them down to four
stages. The four stages in Piaget s Theory of Cognitive Development are the sensorimotor stage,
preoperational stage, concrete operational stage, and formal operational stage. These stages cover
things such as reflexes to adolescent egocentrism. (Santrock)
The first stage, the sensorimotor stage, last from birth to around two years old (Santrock. Generally,
infants begin to develop a way of understanding their surroundings by integrating physical and ...

Two to seven years old also ask a lot of questions, especially why because they are so curious. One of
the mastery tasks in this stage is centration. Centration is when attention is focused on a certain
characteristic and another is ignored. For example, a child could be shown two bottles of the same size
with the same amount of liquid and once one of the bottles was poured into a different container they
would think that it was a different amount than before. (Santrock)
The concrete operational stage occurs during seven to eleven years of age. Children are now able to
perform concrete operations, such as math. They also develop the ability to reason logically if it isn t
abstract. Seriation and transitivity are also included in this stage. Seriation, a mastery task, is when
children can order numbers, objects, etc. into a correct order with things such as numerical order or
length. (Santrock)
The formal operational stage occurs from eleven to fifteen years of age. Adolescents reason more
logically and can understand and imagine abstract circumstances/ideas. These children will begin to
create ideal circumstances in their minds. This is very common, especially in girls who will imagine
their perfect life, family, husband, etc.. Eleven to fifteen years old are also much better at creating
hypotheses and developing educated guesses. This is called

Lab Report Combustion Of Alcohols
In this experiment four alcohols in a series were burned to find the amount of heat absorbed per
second. The alcohols burnt were Ethanol (CH4O), Propanol(C3H8O), Butanol (C4H10O) and
Pentanol (C5H12O). Their flames heated up a calorimeter filled with water. This was incomplete
combustion due to the lab conditions. Incomplete combustion occurs when the supply of air or oxygen
is poor. ( BBC GCSE Bitesize: Combustion , 2017). Complete combustion gives off more energy as
heat and is ideal but was unlikely under the test conditions. Complete combustion requires a decent
supply of oxygen to react with. If these conditions aren t met incomplete combustion occurs and water
is produced, but carbon monoxide and carbon are produced instead of carbon ... Show more content

Originally it was planned to cover the calorimeter and heat shield with foil to insulate heat. This idea
was used throughout the experiment but in different ways. Then used a circular piece of styrofoam
over the heat shield and taped insulation tape around it and the heat shield as a lid. By this point a
water calorimeter found better results compared to a copper block calorimeter. Using a copper
calorimeter usually provides more accurate results and lower percentage errors. In the top of the
styrofoam a hole was cut in the centre for the probe and a line for it to be stirred. Stirring the water in
the calorimeter is necessary to keep it from boiling and shooting out of the calorimeter. Stirring also
causes the calorimeter to heat up

Female Body Image and the Mass Media Essay
From the time they are born, girls are influenced by society as to who they should be, how they should
look, and how they should act. Americans believe that women should be to a certain standard; pretty,
feminine, and especially, thin. The pressures derive from family, media, and friends. Marge Piercy s
poem, Barbie Doll depicts a girl who was never recognized for her character and spent her life trying
to be accepted for who she was, rather than how she looked. We live in a society with rigid gender
roles and expectations as to how people are supposed to be, based completely on their sex.
(Benokraitis) Women are expected to be the housewife, take care of the kids, and on top of all that
they need to look good doing it. Men are the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One study took a group of 6th grade girls and had them play with Barbie s, then later asked them what
their views of Barbie were: They should make a fat one. They are all so skinny and that s mean to fat
people. They are all perfect. They never do anything real in all the books [about Barbie dolls]. I think
she does too much. Yeah, they are all perfect [and] it s just too much. I always thought Barbie was so
cool; [as] I got older, I learned that it s impossible to be Barbie. She s been everywhere, [even] in
outer space. She s the perfect blonde. She has the perfect blue eyes. She s like everything! If she was a
real person she wouldn t be able to walk. (Tara Kuther) The girls did realize that Barbie s figure is not
realistic since they are now older and felt that Barbie could stand to gain a few pounds. But at a
younger age the girls did envy Barbie even though she would be very disproportionate if she were a
real person. In Piercy s poem, Barbie Doll the girl goes through puberty and has a really hard time
with it. A classmate tells her she has a big nose and fat legs. It states that nobody noticed that she was
healthy and intelligent, they just saw her culturally unacceptable body type. (643) Media is one of the
biggest influences on little girls, Children 8 to 10 spend about 5.5 hours a day using media. (Szabo)

Christian Perspective And Worldview Essay
Session One Response Journal Explain how a Christian s perspective and worldview could be a
valuable asset to an organization that uses statistics on a regular basis. My first inclination, and easy
answer here, is to make a statement that a Christian perspective and worldview would be valuable to
any organization. An organization centered on principles and teaching of the bible would operate with
integrity, and accountability. The difficult part is translating that specifically to the area of statistics.
How can you relate Christian beliefs, and values to mathematics? As Christians do we think
differently about numbers and data? Do we have a different motivation for the use of the information
we obtain from statistical analysis? My

1990s the business world was revolutionized with the quality management technique in business. It
was the time when the businesses started to embrace the concept of quality and so they started to use it
as a competitive advantage (Abusa, 2013).

  • 2. Lumbriculus Viegatus Lab Report Lumbriculus variegatus, also known as blackworms, reproduce by asexual fragmentation in a lab setting. They are easy to handle and keep alive, needing only fresh spring water every few days. They are viewed under a stereomicroscope and slowed down by exposure to ice water for easier cutting. The object of the experiment was to test whether the amount of segments left in a cut worm affected the regeneration rate of the worm. We cut the worms into small and long anterior and posterior fragments, along with separating the heads and tails. We predicted the pieces of worms with the most segments (the long anterior and long posterior) would survive and regenerate better than the smaller sections. Our results showed the null hypothesis was supported because the short anterior segments grew the most. The reason for this occurrence may be the worms survival, regardless of segment length, is unpredictable. This would also offer an explanation as to why our control worms died in the end of the experiment. Introduction Lumbriculus variegatus, also known as blackworms or California blackworms, are known for their abilities to regenerate. Lumbriculus variegatus are in the phylum Annelida, class Oligochaeta, order Lumbriculidae, family Lumbriculidae, and genus Lumbriculus variegatu. (Drewes 2004). Blackworms are easy to maintain, needing only spring creek water to keep them alive. A blackworm has about 150 to 250 segments on its body, which is about 10 centimeters long (Drewes 2004). ... • 3. Louisiana Chemicals Affect Human Health Louisiana Chemicals: Sources and Human Health Piers A. Cropp Lynn University Following the industrial revolution, societies across the world began to notice strange effects on individuals throughout certain local communities. Though toxicology was a relatively new and rudimentary practice at the time, scientists were able to trace these effects back to chemicals being exposed to industrial workers, their families, and nearby neighborhoods. Unfortunately, industry in the United States continued to expand with little regard for the effects on human health. As a result from this expansion the amount of chemicals released into the atmosphere skyrocketed continuously all the way to present day society. However, as industry expanded so did scientific technology, the understanding of chemicals, their exposure ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ammonia inhalation causes upper respiratory irritation. In a study conducted in 1973, four of six participants admitted to experiencing irritation of the nose and eyes after an exposure to 50 ppm of ammonia for 10 minutes. Thirty percent of the participants described nose, eye, and throat irritation at an exposure of 75 ppm for 5 minutes. However, low occupational exposure over a period of about fourteen years showed no effect on pulmonary function. However, rare cases of high concentrated exposure show sever effects. For example, around 1989 an adult male was found unconscious next to a ruptured pipeline carrying liquid ammonia. He suffered burns on his eyes as well as his skin, and experienced difficulty breathing. Throughout the following month, he suffered from cases of complete circulatory collapse (which he was resuscitated from) and eventually died from cardiac arrest. Exposure to high concentrations of ammonia (2,500 ppm) can potentially lead to cardiovascular problems including: elevated pulse, rise in blood pressure, and cardiac ... • 6. Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe Fannie Flag... Racism deeply affects how people are treated. Because of the color of someone s skin, people are often looked at treated and differently. In the novel Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Café, Fannie Flag illustrates the Racism as a theme in many different ways. The stories start off with the introduction of two women, Ninny and Evelyn who meet in a nursing home, and Ninny tells the tales of her days back in the whistle stop café, around the 1920 s. Throughout the story the appearance and mention of the Ku Klux Klan appears at various times, and black men are given food out the back door, while the white men are fed inside at the tables; how black people were viewed at the time was transparent; they were thought of as lower people, and they were treated like dirt. Racism impacts how people are treated and people who are subjected to it to have less opportunities, resulting in a poorer quality of life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People treat others differently based on the color of their skin. The author showcases this throughout the novel, through the lives of Artis and Jasper, twin siblings who have extensively different complexions than one another, The oldest son, whom she named Jasper, was the color of a creamy cup of coffee, and the other one, named Artis, was black as coal (97). Coffee is typically thought of as something warm and pleasant, while coal is dark and grimy. This may be considered a metaphor for their lives, as Jasper s was always warm and welcoming, and Artis pathway was dark, he saw horrible things in his time even though he was well behaved. People treated Jasper with much more respect than his brother, Artis, and the sole reason was obvious. • 7. The Medieval Era Essay example The Medieval Era The Medieval era is so easily generalized into the three orders of those who fight, those who work, and those who pray, or even simply divided into the privileged and unprivileged. These distinctions are important, for the ability of the church and manor to influence a peasant s actions and to take a peasant s earnings was obviously a central component of a peasant s life. However, when peasants constituted such a sizable majority of the population (over 90 percent), it is also important to recognize the distinctions among them. Some peasants were free and some were serfs. Some peasants were well off and some were barely subsisting. Some peasants held manorial offices and some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through recording land sales and inheritances, the courts rolls explain the economic status of certain peasants, and through recording contracts and crimes committed, they can describe relationships between peasants. For example, Bennett writes, Cecilia illegally took hay off the land of Richard Everard; she let her animals trespass onto the property of others; she argued with Alice Baker, (103). Again, the records are factual but anything that goes beyond the written word is an inference subject to interpretation and generalization. Bennett also uses poems and songs throughout the text. Clues about how privileged people regarded peasants can be found in their courtly songs, sarcastic proverbs, nasty jokes, and pious sermons, writes Bennett (3). However, these only tell about the generalized negative opinions of elites regarding peasants. Personal diaries and letters are missing from the book because almost all peasants were illiterate. Therefore, sources used are for the most part objective and lack emotion. This takes away from the reader s ability to connect with Cecilia as a person. The reader knows that Cecilia was allowed many more rights since she never married, but they do not know if she enjoyed her individuality or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Hard Facts Of The Grimms Fairy Tales The four themes that Maria Tatar argues in her book The Hard Facts of the Grimms Fairy Tales are 1. Rise of national identity and culture 2.Dissolution 3. Political and religious refugees and 4. Change in technology. With all four of these being relevant to the time, it sets up the importance of the remake of the fairy tale. We have to look critically at where we are and where we are going because of our pop culture and politics. While some may argue that fairy tales have become less important to society as we are advancing in technology there are some that still strike important meaning to this day. Fairy tales in this day have often become associated with 1) Disney and 2) princess culture. And while there is nothing wrong with these, in fact I am a huge fan of both of them myself, as a result many other fairy tales have been pushed into the background. One such fairy tale is The Emperor s New Clothes, originally written down by Hans Christian Andersen in 1837. This tale is able to examine how social media is changing our interactions as well as talk about the political climate in which we now live in. This then makes it the perfect candidate for a modern remake movie. The american public is the becoming the emperor as we lose sight of what s really import by social media consumption, while the current political climate is the people who are promising to make us robes. • 9. Neoclassicism and the Enlightenment Essay Neoclassicism and the Enlightenment The Enlightenment was a time of great innovation and evolution. One of the most significant movements which owes at least the majority of its beginnings to the Enlightenment is the architectural and artistic movement of Neoclassicism. This Neoclassicism of the mid eighteenth to mid nineteenth centuries is one that valued ancient Greek, Roman, and Etruscan artistic ideals. These ideals, including order, symmetry, and balance, were considered by many European generations to be the highest point of artistic excellence. Although many movements in European art were largely devoid of classical characteristics, they were always looked to as sources of inspiration and were revived as significant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The pettiness of these movements had created a backlash and these thinkers and art critics welcomed the harsher and more ordered Neoclassical style as they began to swing the art pendulum in the opposite direction. One of the primary causes in the rise of Neoclassicism in the mid eighteenth century was the expansion of what was previously called a classical education. By 1750 Italian tourism was already a full blown industry, with guides and guidebooks circulating throughout Europe. As a part of any young man s education, he now had to make the artistic tour of Italy, especially Florence, Rome, and Naples. This was not just a quick visit to a couple museums; rather, it was a lengthy, often times more than a year, and in depth study of the rich trove of art that these cities had to offer. It was supplemented with classes and lectures at the museums and time taken after these to sketch or paint these precious works to take home. The proliferation of these sketches would compound and any aspiring artist was also then required to study these works. The increased influence and awareness of Greek and Roman art in the studies of the developing artists would soon begin to show in their designs. One of the most significant reasons that a renewed interest in Italy has arisen was the recently found sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The excavation of these sites revealed massive amounts ... Mold Whether you are moving into a new home with mold damage or you have noticed mold damage in your current home, getting rid of that mold as soon as possible is important. Odors Most people will experience undesirable odors in their home at some point. You can often get rid of these unpleasant odors simply by throwing out items and cleaning up messes. Unfortunately, these bad smells can stick around and may require a more thorough cleaning, sometimes by a biohazard team. Fortunately, simply keeping your home clean is one of the top ways to prevent bad smells from sticking around your house. There are a few steps you can do to prevent bad odors in your home. Regularly go through your refrigerator and pantry, throwing out food that is no longer good. Rather than throwing it in your kitchen garbage, where it is likely to make your whole kitchen stink, take the food to an outdoor trash or dumpster. Clean up after your pets. For many people, their pets are an integral part of their family. Unfortunately, pets can also be a smelly part of your family. Make sure your dog gets a bath regularly. Keep any pet cages or tanks clean. If your pet has an accident in your house, clean it up right away. The sooner you discover the problem, the less time it will have to seep into your flooring. • 11. Garveyism and Rastafarianism Essay Garveyism and Rastafarianism I. Introduction In the twentieth century, two movements have emerged out of Jamaica in protest of black oppression and slavery, both mental and physical. The first to evolve was Garveyism, founded by Marcus Garvey, and was born in the aftermath of the First World War. Rastafarianism was the second movement to emerge, lead by Leonard Howell during the depression years of the 1930 s. Garveyism and Rastafarianism are both resistance movements based on the same ideal: consciousness and essentialism of Africa and its descendants. The founding brethren of the Rastafari movement were Garveyites themselves, although not members of the Universal Negro Improvement Asscioation (UNIA), they agreed with and defended ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Garvey s aim was to recontextualize particular aspects of seeming irreconcilable systems of Marxism/Leninism, monarchism, and even of National Socialism for the African of Africa American experience (Zips, 224). Garvey did not feel restricted by established political ideologies, instead he felt free to pick out the best attributes of every government. Ultimately, Garveyism hoped to develop the African continent into a modern network of nations, modeling it after the United States and Western Europe (Lewis, 146). Garvey established the UNIA in Jamaica in the year 1914, two years later he left for the United States in order to gain more momentum for his movement and spread the African unity he had started in Jamaica. Before leaving Jamaica, Garvey made a prophecy of sorts to his followers: Look into Africa for the crowning of a black king. He shall be the Redeemer (Barrett, 67). From this prediction stems most of the discrepancy between Garveyites and Rastafarians, something I will discuss later in this paper. The four main themes that the Garvey movement was built upon were 1) Africa for Africans at home and abroad, 2) unity, 3) self reliance, and 4) retaining their black pride in the presence of whites (Chevannes, 95). Garvey brought this ideology with him to the United States where he founded an American branch of the UNIA in 1917 and furthered his initiatives ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. How Does Truman Capote Use Syntax In The In Cold Blood Truman Capote s In Cold Blood recounts the brutal murder of the Clutter family on November 15, 1959. However, Capote does not just detail the murder; he dramatizes it by shifting the focus from the victims to the culprits. Through his use of syntax, diction and appeals to pathos, Capote achieves his purpose of evoking sympathy in his audience for murderers Richard Dick Hickock and Perry Smith. The way in which Truman Capote utilizes syntax throughout the novel gives insight to the true character of the murderers. Capote excellently creates sympathy through his use of syntax by incorporating subordinate elements into his writing, evolving his pace from smooth to staccato, and using syntax styles that mimic the character s individuality. Lastly, Capote stresses the loving home lives of the murderers, evoking a sense of warm heartedness in the reader. His use of diction, syntax and appeals to pathos in order to create sympathy for the murderers is effective in that it provoked the audience to question the true motives of the murderers. Capote depicts the cold blooded culprits, Perry more so than Dick, as honorable men; this evokes sympathy in the reader, for the loving, caring, respectful nature both Dick and Perry exude would not be found in a brutal murderer. • 14. Fashion Values In The Fashion Industry The current reality of clothing production, called fast fashion, is the industry standard of mass producing luxury styles in a matter of weeks. To do so, clothes are churned out quickly using poor quality materials. This is problematic because of the large amount of unnecessary environmental damage that this business model causes. The fashion industry should abandon the current trend of fast fashion and disposable clothing to decrease the amount of hazardous environmental waste created. The fashion industry should adopt slow fashion values that aim to cut excess consumer waste by changing the current societal norms around fashion buying and clothing disposal. Fast fashion has become the pinnacle of the fashion industry because it is very profitable. Cheap material and cheap overseas labor has made places like Walmart, Zara, and H M twice as profitable as any retail store (Cline, The Clothes Make the Movement , 21). The average American household spends one thousand and seven hundred dollars on apparel every year. One third of the average household expense is claimed by women aged sixteen and older who spend over five hundred dollars on clothing and shoes annually (Bureau of Labor Statistics). That dollar amount translates into an average of sixty eight items of clothing and seven pairs of shoes per the average American (Cline, The Clothes Make the Movement , 21). • 15. Muhammad s Influence On Islam In the year wchih followed the Revelation, Muhammad began his public preaching. The first converts include his wife Khadija, cousin Ali, other people closely related to him, and eventually more people from his own clan of Hashim. At first there was no sign of opposition against Muhammad s teaching, but as it become more widespread in Mecca, people start seeing it as a threat to the city s stability. Muhammad s message about a single, all powerful deity negates the legitimacy of the haram and its idols, puting the holy and neutral status of the site at risk. This theological clash continued to put pressure on Muhammad and his followers. However, they receive protection because of the solidity of the clan system. It had been Abu Talib, Muhammad s uncle, who united the Hashim in support of Muhammad and protected him for his Meccan opposition. In 619, both Khadija and Abu Thalib, two of Muhammad s most important protecters passed away and his opposition became even more bold and determined to pressure Muhammad. It is important to remember that the previous early success of the spread of Islam in Mecca could only be achieved because of Muhammad s allegience and close relationship with these two important Meccan figures. In other words, Muhammad s kinship paved the way for his teachings to be disemminated within the Meccan society. As Meccans become more hostile towards Muhammad, he began to look outside his native city for support. At this crucial point, Muhammad was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Effect Of Body Condition On Postpartum Interval Introduction There has been a long history of the effect of body condition on postpartum interval; however, there have been limited reports to elucidate the interaction between body condition score and follicular populations and how this affects postpartum interval. Postpartum Interval is defined as the period of sexual rest during which the reproductive system is mainly quiescent. Follicular development is minimal; the corpora lutea, although identifiable, have regressed and are non functional. Secretions are scanty and viscous, the cervix is constricted, and the vaginal mucosa is pale (Sheldon, 2002). A major obstacle in maintaining a 12 mo calving interval for beef producers, particularly for those using Brahman females, is the long duration of the postpartum anestrous period. In order to curb this, a postpartum animal must recover from the suppressive effects of gestation and parturition on the pituitary, ovarian and endocrine systems (Browning et al., 1994). Pituitary and ovarian function in suckled beef cows may return within 4 to 5 wk after calving (McNatty, 1988; Wright et al., 1990). Nutrition is a major factor controlling the length of the postpartum acyclicity (Randel, 1990). When an animal gains or losses body condition the amount of leptin in blood is changed (Amstalden et al., 2000; Amstalden et al., 2005), due to the increase in adipocytes, thus affecting the release of GnRH; and thereby affecting oogenesis, follicular maturation and ovulation (Gentry et ... As a son of a sharecropper and grandson of a slave, Jesse Owens created History in 1936 when he achieved what no athlete had done before: four Olympic Gold Medals. (jesseowens.com). During this era, the United States had limited civil rights and was approaching a World War with Hitler rising into power in Germany. Although Owens was victorious on the track, because of the color of his skin, He was looked down upon and unrecognized by even his own country. Through the excessive racism, one may ask how Owens moved forward and dealt with such negativity in a situation that should have been celebrated. On May 25th, 1935 Jesse Owens set three world records in a span of forty five minutes at the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor(www.jesseowens.com). Despite his sore back that day, he achieved a 9.4 second victory in the 100 meter dash, long jumped 26 ft. 8 ¼ inches, sprinted at 20.3 seconds on the 220 meter sprint, and succeeded in the 220 yard low hurdles at 22.6 seconds. Because of such great success, Owens entered the 1936 Olympics that were to be held in Berlin, Germany. Hitler was rising into power in Germany and it is said that he tried to use the Olympics in order to show the world a resurgent Germany (www.jesse owens.org). Nazi propaganda promoted concepts of Aryan racial superiority and depicted Africans as inferior. Hitler wanted the entire world to believe that the Aryan people were a dominant race. • 19. Islamic Laws And Islamic Law Essay Analysis For the purpose of this analysis I am going to compare each nations legal tradition, and provide the definition of the rule of law. Iran is considered to be an Islamic country, a country that practices a sacred legal tradition and more specifically Islamic law. In this type of legal tradition there is no separations between religious and legal entities. Islamic law is proclaimed as the basis for all law, including harsh Islamic criminal law, punishment that is based on retribution (Dammer, Albanese p. 57,58). In Iran, there is a great influence to have Shari a law further integrated in to the national law, the Quran is the Muslim s holy book and therefore is considered to be the most important source in Shai a law (Dammer, Albanese p. 57,58). The Quran is around 6,000 versus, although only 80 of those could be considered legal terms (Amin, 1985a, p. 9). Islamic law is unique compared to other legal traditions due to the fact that it is not based or representative of customs or traditions, such as those legal traditions that are based on code law, such as the Civil law that is practiced in Italy and much of the Western World (Dammer, Albanese, 2014). Italy s legal tradition was based on codified Roman law. The civil code of 1942 replaced the original code of 1865; Italy currently practices a Civil law tradition. Sassoon provided Owen with encouragement he needed to write about experiences he had throughout the war. However, it was not until the summer of 1917 that he found his true voice. Owen is widely recognized as one of the greatest voices of WWI. The Wilfred Owen Association was formed in 1989 to commemorate Wilfred Owen s life and work. The poems for which Owen is remembered for were written in a period between August 1917 and September 1918. Owen self appointed himself with the task of speaking out for the men in his care. He did this by showing the pettiness of war, which Owen also expressed his distaste for the war in his letters home. He uses several means of satire to reveal the foolishness of various ideas and the absurdity of following any one idea to an extreme extent. Through his work, Voltaire hopes to expose the reader to the irrationality and vices of the world in which he lives, while using literary techniques to illuminate his claims. Nearly everything that surrounds us in our day to day lives is born of intense industrial processes, yet rarely do we think of the systems that support our lifestyles. Never before has the sustenance of a culture imposed detrimental effects on such a worldwide scale as our own (Chiras, 2001). Our daily negligence and blind support of industrial systems of design is destroying the natural world that supports us. There are several problems with industrial design and processes. Primarily, industrial design is not case specific. It cares not for bioregional differences, but tends to value strength. Take for example clothing detergents. Water in different areas has differing degrees of mineral concentrations. Water with lower concentrations of minerals, as may be found in the northwestern United States, requires less detergent than water in the Southwest to clean clothing. However, detergent has a universal dosage and strength despite these regional differences (McDonough 2002, p. 29). Excess detergent can contaminate waterways and alter aquatic ecosystems. Another example is lawn fertilization. Many people over fertilize their lawns in order to improve the color, which can harm aquatic life when runoff occurs. Many of these people also throw away their clippings after mowing, effectively removing nutrients from their lawns. Now the fertilization is required again. These homeowners are now increasing their dependence on industrial systems while hurting natural systems, instead of utilizing natural systems, which would decrease their need for industrial ... By understanding the importance of conduction, one is able to determine the total resistance and visualize how resistors are connected in parallel circuits. • 39. Greek Art Description Essay Description: This white marble statue group was made in 40 20CE and it is a masterpiece of the sculptors of Rhodes. The sculpture shows the Laocoon, a priest of Apollo in the city of Troy together with his young sons. The three are battling with a giant serpent that winds its coils around their bodies. The story behind this sculpture is that during the Trojan War, the Laocoon, warned his fellow Trojans against taking in the wooden horse left by the Greeks outside the city gates. Athena and Poseidon, who were favouring the Greeks, sent two great sea serpents which have wrapped their coils around Laocoon and his two sons and are killing them. From the Roman point of view, the death of these innocents was crucial to the decision of Aeneas, who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is an incredible agony and suffering is contained in the face of Laocoon as his lips are parted in an expression of anguish, his brow furrowed with pain, eyes filled with torment. Laocoon is half seated on the boulder and his cloak is dropping from him and draped over the boulder. Laocoon s right arm is bends from the elbow trying to reach the serpent from behind his head and his left hand is reaching down to grip the serpents throat, trying desperately prevent the serpent from biting his hip. Every muscle, every sinew of Laocoon s body stretches and twisted showing the intensity of his struggle as he fights for his life, the veins standing out as if pulsing with blood. Laoccon s two young sons, less than half his height, and the way they both look toward their father with fearful eye really brings emotions to this statue. It wasn t too warm and it wasn t too cold. I felt comfortable in my own skin. I was a bit excited because it was a night that I had planned for a while with some old high school friends. It had been a while since I spoke to either one of them and it was definitely time for a gathering. On the way there I felt myself become nervous. I started to sweat as if I ran a mile or a marathon. This didn t feel like my typical self when I would get nervous. This was a feeling of nervousness with fear. It was coming back. I thought I had been cured of this ugly feeling but, I was wrong. ... I was more uncomfortable explaining it in a medical term. I had a fear of Social Situations, which was the correct explanation of me being a Hermit . I was completely out of the picture when it came to any type of gathering planned by friends or family members. I d think of every excuse in the book just so I can avoid going. My fear of being judged, criticized and humiliated was taking over. Where the ugly outcome of Social Anxiety unfolds immediately in the form of a wounded self concept, the next ugly outcome comes about more frequently over time. Having a wounded self concept makes it harder for you to have confidence in yourself, and when you have a difficulty with confidence you will procrastinate. You tend to protect yourself with maladaptive conscious strategies such as avoidance through difficult situations and challenging circumstances. I always wondered how I became this way. Out of all the biological, physiological risk factors of social anxiety; being a female, family history, new work demands or even temperament, I just could relate to being a female. Social phobia wasn t something I d use to describe myself. I didn t have a phobia, I just didn t feel comfortable leaving my house to be in crowded areas. To me phobia sounds too serious. • 43. Aeneas Definition Of Justice Essay Plato, in the Republic, seeks to define justice while showing how justice is worthwhile and good in itself. To him, justice is mainly centered around the idea of fulfilling appropriate roles. He describes what justice is like in both the city and the individual, and appeals to human psychology through this analogy. In Book IV, Plato completes this analogy by introducing justice within the individual. He claims that justice in the city parallels justice in the individual. Justice for the individual, according to Plato, is about the fulfillment of appropriate roles and the relationships among them. The question is if Aeneas lived a justly life or was he unjust. The focus I will have will be how Aeneas was considered just off the battlefield by not being distracted and progressing his people into the golden era . ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Plato s definition again reuttered says, Justice as an individual is about the fulfillment of appropriate roles and the relationships among them. Aeneas easily fulfills his role and more. Aeneas could have given up and not gone through and abandoned his people from the beginning when he was in sorrow that his people died but again it shows here that he in modern terminology, sucked it up . In Book I it says, So, ran the speech. Burdened and sick at heart, He feigned hope in his look, and inwardly contained his anguish. (Aeneid I). This quote showed that even though Aeneas was saddened by the falling of his people that he had to hold it in and keep strong to continue to guide and comfort his people in this time of disbelief and discomfort. There is clear evidence that Aeneas was just in his actions but there are reasons that he could be considered unjust but the evidence is substantially weaker in comparison to him being ... • 44. The Character Analysis Of The Film Smoke Signals It s a good day to be indigenous! (00:04:55 00:04:56) says Randy Peone, the voice of the KREZ radio, setting the mood for the whole film, Smoke Signals. Smoke Signals is about Native Americans, specifically Thomas Builds The Fire, played by Evan Adams, and Victor Joseph, played by Adam Beach, that live on the Coeur d Alene Indian Reservation. The story follows these two proud to be Indian boys all the way through their adulthood. The audience gets to see their relationship develop from distant friends to a brother like bond. This film is a Native American masterpiece; however, I believe that the true magic lies in the work of Evan Adams. As soon as Thomas enters on screen, the audience falls in love. He wears two side braids, nice suits, and a huge smile plastered across his face. At the beginning of the film, he is a happy and curious kid that is everything but refreshing to his friend Victor. They both have known each other their entire lives. One thing that is truly captivating about Evan s performance is his ability to truly encapsulate his character. While watching the film, one can really see the emotion and feeling in his eyes and in his voice. In part in particular, he says, So then he [Arnold, Victor s father] took me to Denny s. There are so many huge developments during those years and Piaget got them down to four stages. The four stages in Piaget s Theory of Cognitive Development are the sensorimotor stage, preoperational stage, concrete operational stage, and formal operational stage. These stages cover things such as reflexes to adolescent egocentrism. (Santrock) The first stage, the sensorimotor stage, last from birth to around two years old (Santrock. Two to seven years old also ask a lot of questions, especially why because they are so curious. One of the mastery tasks in this stage is centration. Centration is when attention is focused on a certain characteristic and another is ignored. For example, a child could be shown two bottles of the same size with the same amount of liquid and once one of the bottles was poured into a different container they would think that it was a different amount than before. (Santrock) The concrete operational stage occurs during seven to eleven years of age. Children are now able to perform concrete operations, such as math. They also develop the ability to reason logically if it isn t abstract. Seriation and transitivity are also included in this stage. Seriation, a mastery task, is when children can order numbers, objects, etc. into a correct order with things such as numerical order or length. (Santrock) The formal operational stage occurs from eleven to fifteen years of age. Adolescents reason more logically and can understand and imagine abstract circumstances/ideas. These children will begin to create ideal circumstances in their minds. This is very common, especially in girls who will imagine their perfect life, family, husband, etc.. The alcohols burnt were Ethanol (CH4O), Propanol(C3H8O), Butanol (C4H10O) and Pentanol (C5H12O). Their flames heated up a calorimeter filled with water. This was incomplete combustion due to the lab conditions. Incomplete combustion occurs when the supply of air or oxygen is poor. ( BBC GCSE Bitesize: Combustion , 2017). Americans believe that women should be to a certain standard; pretty, feminine, and especially, thin. The pressures derive from family, media, and friends. Marge Piercy s poem, Barbie Doll depicts a girl who was never recognized for her character and spent her life trying to be accepted for who she was, rather than how she looked.
