Orientalism And Imperialism In Mcbryde s A Passage To India
caves produce, are of snakes and worms. Mrs. Moor is sunk in apathy and cynicism. Her romance
with India is over.
On their return from picnic, Aziz behaves like a child in the face of the Raj officials, who intend to
arrest him on charge of an attempted crime. Only Fielding, a British, can keep him calm and sane.
Fielding is portrayed as a superior human being who is in control of everything. The Indians,
including Aziz, wail and weep at this misfortune.
McBryde, the British police officer, has an Orientalist doctrine about the Indians. All natives who live
south of latitude 30 are criminals at heart. The psychology of the people, McBryde tells Fielding, is

The study has proved its basic proposition that A Passage to India is a colonialist discourse and as one
form of Orientalism has strengthened and reinforced the stereotype image of India and Indians. The
study has shown that Forster has not made even a passing reference to the oppression and the
pandemic brutalities of the natives by the colonizers. He has not mentioned any Indian leader or the
struggle put up by the Indians to get rid of their oppressors. The study has also shown the deep link
between culture and imperialism. The Indians are shown to have assimilated the culture of their
masters .The Indians are portrayed as ashamed of themselves, of their culture and of their identity.
Throughout the novel, the Indians are presented as lesser people, who cannot manage their affairs like
mature, responsible individuals. This is the projection of the European hegemonic assumptions, which
have been exposed by the present study. The analysis also has highlighted the portrayal of the internal
divisions and infighting among the Indians, on social and religious grounds. This was meant to justify
the presence of the British in

Hockley In Titanic
The Titanic Depth of the Heart of the Ocean
Ahh, open your heart to me, Rose, pleads Caledon Hockley of the young Rose
in James Cameron s film, Titanic, just after he gives her a most expensive
diamond. The actor Billy Zane plays Hockley as a callous, jaded, been there done
that sophisticate who seems to want her heart simply because he believes it is for sale
and he has a right to it. His blindness to higher motives in love totally disqualifies him
from being worthy of Rose DeWitt Bukater, played by Kate Winslet. But perhaps it is
also the opaque nature of love itself that defeats him. This scene between Hockley and
Rose is one of several ways in which Cameron develops the idea of the closed heart ... Show more

The crew is stumped. But then
Rose hears a newscast about it, sees her picture on TV and calls the ship, asking, I
was just wondering if you had found the heart of the ocean yet, Mr. Lovett?
The literal gem, then, serves to drive the plot. People explore wrecks for the
challenge and for scientific purposes, but Cameron has Brock Lovett, played by Bill
Paxton, and his salvage crew searching for a diamond. This motivation works on two
levels. It gives a reason for the dangerous and expensive dive that the people sitting in
the dark theater can appreciate. Many people in this materialistic world can relate to
and understand betting one s life and fortune on a diamond that rivals the Hope
diamond in value. On an artistic level, though, the search for material wealth parallels
the confidence that the Titanic s owners place in material goods and technology. And
of course, just as money and wealth by themselves fail to make life worthwhile for most
people, all of the confidence her owners and passengers mistakenly place in the
integrity of this man made ship cannot keep them warm in ice water.
In addition to driving the plot, the diamond functions on a figurative, symbolic
level. The gem represents the human heart, the repository and driving force behind
people s emotions. Toward the end of

Essay on Scottish American Immigration
Scottish American Immigration
America was created by people who immigrated to the country over the years. One of the many
groups of people to come to America and help build into what she is today was the Scots. In order to
discuss the Scottish immigration you must understand why they immigrated, what type of prejudice
they faced, and what role the Scots now have in today s America. Though the Scots did not have the
influx of people immigrating as the Irish, Italian, or English they had a major influence on the
development of America.
When did the first Scottish arrive and why did they come? The first Scots in America probably came
with the Vikings is what Wikipedia says on when the first Scots came to America. The first official ...

Because of this many Scots did not face prejudice or discrimination and more Scots came to the New
World. So much so that at the time of our first federal census (1790) people of Scottish (including
Scottish Irish) origins made up more than six percent of the population. (geneologymagazine.com) By
the year 2000 approximately 1.5 million Scots have immigrated to America. (Gormley) So were the
Scottish discriminated against or did they discriminate. The truth of the matter is that though the
Scottish was not discriminated against, they did participate in discrimination. The Scottish was some
of the main farmers of cotton and tobacco. Because of this the Scottish owned many slaves and fought
to be able to keep the African Americans slaves. Their discrimination against this race would continue
well into the 1960 s. This would include discriminating against them in jobs, whether that being not
hiring because of color, or not promoting for the same reason.
For the most part the Scottish did real well for themselves once they were in America. A fair went on
to have children who became presidents; Andrew Jackson was one of those children. Along with
Andrew Jackson there were a few more Scots to help sign the Declaration of Independence. Many
presidents later would be of Scottish decent. Many went on to become successful tobacco and cotton
farmers. Many went on to settle and discover the American West

Kitagawa Utamaro And Paul Gauguin s Use Of Color Techniques
Describe specifically what the term arbitrary color means, a color used at random for objects that have
a common color, such as, a tree has green leaves, but we choose to make the leave purple or making
the sun black, the clouds green, or the sky yellow, etc.
Who was the first artist to employ the technique? I would have to say Katsushika Hokusai, Kitagawa
Utamaro, and And¯o Hiroshige had a role in the technique. The technique was used in And¯o
Hiroshige color woodcut print, ( Moon Pine at Ueno from One Hundred Views of Famous Places in
Edo ), (Pg. 27), because of the color use. The colors seem to be out of place, such as, the sky s
appearance being that of black, blue, and green, also the tree appears to have a redder tent than what
we would normally see in nature. Hiroshige and other Japanese artists had gotten young artist thinking
about color, arbitrary color, and pure color. One of the artist that took the color techniques from color
woodcut prints and Japanese prints was Paul Gauguin. Gauguin was truly the first to employ arbitrary
color techniques, which can be seen in his (Vision after the Sermon), (Pg. 60), with vivid red paint in
the back ground, splashes of green and blue tenting on the nuns faces, these colors are not known in
nature, and they are non descriptive. It just isn t natural to see these colors placed this way. Thus,
Gauguin s paintings influenced younger artist and affected their ideas in the Nabis and Fauve periods.
Later movements adopted this

Art, The Individual and Society
A Term Paper
13 October 2011
I. INTRODUCTION Art has been around for thousands of years. In fact, different types of craft can be
traced back to prehistoric times when Neanderthal men started painting on the walls of the cave.
Throughout the centuries, art has evolved to several forms among which are sculpting, painting, and
even poetry. Art is the product or process of deliberately arranging items in a way that influences and
affects one or more of the senses, emotions, and intellect. It encompasses a diverse range of human
activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music, literature, film, photography,
sculpture, and paintings. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the lowest layer of material at these sites there are used pieces of ochre estimated to be 60,000 years
old. Archaeologists have also found a fragment of rock painting preserved in a limestone rock shelter
in the Kimberley region of North Western Australia, that is dated 40 000 years old. There are examples
of cave paintings all over the world in India, France, Spain, Portugal, China, Australia, etc. In Western
cultures oil painting and watercolor painting have rich and complex traditions in style and subject
matter. In the East, ink and color ink historically predominated the choice of media with equally rich
and complex traditions. Modern and Contemporary Art has moved away from the historic value of
craft and documentation in favour of concept; this led some to say in the 1960s that painting, as a
serious art form, is dead. This has not deterred the majority of living painters from continuing to
practice painting either as whole or part of their work. The vitality and versatility of painting in the
21st century belies the premature declarations of its demise. In an epoch characterized by the idea of
pluralism, there is no consensus as to a representative style of the age. Important works of art continue
to be made in a wide variety of styles and aesthetic temperaments, the marketplace being left to judge
merit. Among the continuing and current directions

The Museum Of Fine Art
The Museum of Fine Art in Houston, Texas has a variety of art collections. To be precise, the canopic
jar is mounted on a large pedestal among other sculptures. This Canopic Jar was made in Egypt during
the dynasty XXVI, 664 525 B.C. It was made from limestone. The jar was masterfully carved from
stone and subsequently painted over. It is a historical masterpiece and it is relatively in good
condition. Such stone jars were used to house the organs of the deceased. Their organs were put in
these canopic jars during the mummification process. The lids of these stone jars have a human face.
The faces were carved to represent the four sons of the god Horus. The three dimensional jar is solid
and quite large. It is well displayed in a spacious environment. The lid of the jar is organic due to the
life like face that stares back at the viewer. The rest of the jar is cylindrical with graceful proportions.
The size of the jar interpenetrates with the surrounding space. It turns in space and it was meant to be
viewed from several points of view. Its cylindrical nature makes the viewer s eye wander all around its
form to take in its splendor. Contour lines have been used to make the gentle outline of the jar, giving
it a closed silhouette. The dominant linear elements have been incised on the surface of the jar.
Beautifully crafted hieroglyphic inscriptions can be seen on the middle of the jar. The contour outline
of the jar makes it have a volumetric presence. There are traces of

How Does Kikkuji Play In Japanese
Chikako was unmarried because of the birthmark. There was compassion in her eyes. Oh? Kikuji s
father nodded in apparent surprise. But it wouldn t matter, would it, if her husband were to see it?
Especially if he knew of it before he married her (Kawabata 5).
Chikako is one of the main characters throughout this book. She is the teacher of the tea ceremonies.
Before Kikuji meets her, it is understood that Kikuji s father has already had relations with her; she is
basically his mistress. This is especially exciting to her because with the birthmark on her breast,
Chikako is sexless because Japanese people find it appalling and toxic. So because of this the readers

Her plan is to get Kikuji to see the Inamura girl so hopefully she will become his significant other.
When he witnesses her, he is in awe because she is very beautiful. She becomes important to the book
because Kikuji gets in a conflict between whether or not he wants to be with Fumiko or her. So
because of the relationship between Fumiko and Kikuji, Kikuji s character is affected throughout the
book.
Let s forget about it. It was nothing, she said. It was nothing at all. You were remembering my father?
What! She looked up in surprise (Kawabata 34).
Mrs. Ota is a widow who is also another mistress of Kikuji s father. After his death, Mrs. Ota was
alone again, except for her daughter, Fumiko. Seeing Kikuji at the tea ceremony made her realize the
similarities between Kikuji and his father. She began to treat him like he was his father. With this the
readers can understand that Mrs. Ota is looking for someone that will love her like her old husband or
even Mr. Mitani. So because Kikuji resembles his father, she becomes attached to him. She, however
feels guilty for what she is doing because she knows that it is wrong. She should not be in relations
with the son of one of her past relationships. Her character is important to this book because she
affects the way Kikuji acts. Any of the actions made by Kikuji in this book were because of Mrs.

Heat Is The Transfer Of Thermal Energy Between...
Heat is the transfer of thermal energy between substances. Thermal energy is the kinetic energy of
moving particles of matter. If you go camping, you usually build a fire to sit around at night. Have you
ever wondered why a marshmallow cooks without touching the flame, why the smoke rises, or why
water in a pan boils? Heat can move from one object to another in three different ways: conduction,
convection and radiation.
Some sources of heat may include the following: the sun, friction, and the earth. Life on earth depends
on the sun. The sun provides heat/light for the entire solar system. A person could generate a fire by
rubbing two sticks together. The Earth contains much heat seep inside. Some of the heat escapes to the
surface ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thermal energy radiates through air from a fire causing the fire s energy to transfer to the
marshmallow.
As stated before, thermal conductor occurs when particles of warmer matter bump into particles of
cooler matter and transfer some of their thermal energy to the cooler particles. Conduction is usually
faster in certain solids and liquids than in gases. Returning to the example of a camp fire; what
happens if you use an old metal hangar to roast hot dogs? As the hot dogs cooks, the fire heats the end
of the hanger. If we leave the hanger in the fire long enough, eventually the end we are holding will
become too hot for us to handle. The flames to the metal were transferred by the heat, and then from
molecule to molecule in the hanger. Now, what would have happened if you had chosen a stick to
roast your hot dog? Though the stick may have caught fire, it would not have conducted the heat to
your hand. This is because wood is a very poor heat conductor.
Heat insulators are materials that do not let heat move through them easily. They do not conduct heat
well. Plastic, wood and some fabrics are good thermal insulators. Thermal insulators are good at
keeping heat out and keeping heat in. A winter scarf is a good example of a thermal insulator. It stops
the heat from your body escaping into the cold air.
Temperature is defined as the average kinetic energy of the particles of matter. When

Poverty Is Not A Task Of Charity Essay
INTRODUCTION
Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity; it is an act of justice. Like slavery and Apartheid, poverty
is not natural. It is man made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings.
Sometimes it falls on generation to be great. You can be that great generation. Let your greatness
blossom. Nelson Mandela. Poverty at its worst involves hunger leading to starvation, inadequate
shelter or housing and lack of clothing. Justice is the idea that all people, everywhere in the world,
have the right to a life of dignity. This means a life free from poverty, violence, discrimination or
human rights violations. A world where justice exists in a world where all people are included in a
society and all people can claim their rights to education, shelter, and health care regardless of how
poor or rich they are. Whenever we speak of poverty we must speak of injustice. But more than that,
we must speak of HOPE. To give hope we must have it and if we are to build hope in others it will
require something of humanity. It is found in our actions. Poverty is a state of deprivation, or a lock of
the usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions.
The most common measure of poverty in the U.S is the poverty threshold set by the U.S government.
Almost half of the world over three billion people live on less than $2.50 a day. The poorest people
will have less access to health, education, and other services; such as: problems of

Part 3 Alternative Solutions
To ensure the company will achieve stability by maintaining customer appreciation and satisfaction,
Netflix must invest their time and finances into new alternative solutions. The solutions are based on
what problems have presented themselves and are in best interest of the customers and the company.
The main concerns at the moment seem to be the unreliability and instability of the company as the
guidelines for prices and methods of delivery are constantly changing.
There are a few possible suggestions that are up for experimentation to resolve Netflix s problems.
1. Incorporate commercials before and after everything ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As of now, the limited variety of movies and TV shows do not accommodate extremely young and
older potential subscribers. If there is more selection incorporated, we can include all age groups. By
incorporating cartoons and shows for young children, we are opening up a door for new customers.
Young children will be able to tune in and watch their favorite shows, making it a favorite for parents.
By adding in older movies and TV series like Coronation Street that target the older market, we are
opening the door to potential customers in an older age group.
Solution: Incorporate more variety for a broader age group. Include child friendly TV shows and
movies, to increase viewers at a younger age. Incorporate some of the older, less common TV shows
and movies that target the elder customer base.
Advantages: Opens the door for even younger and older customers
Disadvantages: May be costly for the company to initially start and will rely completely on the
outcome. Netflix must be sure they will gain this extra customer base before making the investment.
3. Create a Customer Base (Expand Social Network) to improve the services of Netflix. The entire
business relies on subscribers. If they don t feel as if they are important, they will hesitate to continue
paying their fees. Also, being able to communicate with the customers will create a more friendly and

The Events And Encounters I Experienced On My Practicum
Introduction The purpose of the following report is to discuss the events and encounters I experienced
on my practicum. I completed my practicum with Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, based out of
Lethbridge, AB. I completed five, eight hour shifts, totaling to 40 hours. I had the opportunity to ride
along with two different peace officers. This allowed me to see two different perspectives and ways of
thinking with regards to the commercial vehicle job. I completed by practicum on the following dates
and times: January 22, (2016) 1400 2200. January 23, 24 (2016) 1000 1800, and February 6, 7 (2016)
0700 1500. For the duration of my practicum we patrolled many different areas and counties. We were
not restricted to a small district and had freedom to move about the Lethbridge district as we saw
necessary.
Communication
I observed many different styles of verbal and non verbal communication throughout my practicum.
On one of the very first traffic stops myself and John Remus, the officer I rode along with, made was
due to a license plate not being visible. I noticed some key aspects of non verbal communication.
Upon approaching the window of a large semi truck we were met with a young man who was clearly
nervous and unaware of the reason for the stop. John stepped up onto the running board of the semi
and introduced himself and his occupation. John then notified the young man of the reason for the stop
and asked for the license and registration for the truck. John s

Business Process Redesign or Reengineering
Business Process Redesign or Reengineering
Business Process Redesign (BPR) or Reengineering is the fundamental rethinking and radical redesign
of business processes to achieve dramatic improvements in critical, contemporary measures of
performance, such as cost, quality, service, and speed (Hammer and Champy, Reengineering). Since
the BPR idea has surfaced it has been under constant ridicule by the popular press.
They say it takes far too long, creates management headaches, fails 70% of the time, and it s only for
big companies with big checkbooks (Hydrel...). However,
I feel that with the right plan, the right people, and total commitment from those involved, BPR or
Reengineering can work for any company.

This move, however, caused a bit of turmoil in the whole process due to he fact that, many employees
weren t use to works in groups. And eventually led to the redesign phase, one that went to drastic
measures and wiped the slate clean. This time, however, the bank knew what it had to do. So this time
TCB moved quickly through the process, and it led to quick results. They began by redesigning the
bank s lines, question certain products, eliminated processes, and apply newer technologies. And
finally a blue print emerged. Which included narrative descriptions of processes, new flowcharts, all

significant: 16,000 ideas, 1005 projects, 1,100 positions to be terminated, and $43M in reduced

them in working order. The 1,005 recommendations have been assigned to teams within the line of

is currently mainstreamed in a regular classroom. Next year, the school plans to put him in a self
contained classroom. I really like his being able to mix with children who are not in the special
education program this year. Can you please explain the advantages and disadvantages of putting him
in a self contained classroom? Mom A: A self contained classroom is the instructional setting for
special education students who have substantial disabilities and for whom placement in a less
restrictive setting (the regular classroom) has not been appropriate. Some of the advantages for your
son of being in a self contained classroom next year are: 1. The classroom will be structured to
minimize distraction and increase individual attention. 2. Your son will get to know one teacher and
will not have to relate to other teachers and move to several different classrooms. 3. His academic

An Experimental Study On Physiology
By learning physiology one can gain knowledge about how the various processes in the body critical
for survival work, and basic daily functions of life. By learning how a muscle contracts, and how
muscles increase circumference through exercise someone who is looking to achieve a muscular, or
lean exterior can manipulate various exercise in order to attain their desired outcome. Not only can
someone improve how they look by exercising, but they can improve their ability to complete an

For days 8 to 21 we established our intervention also known as the treatment. For these two weeks our
group added a practice phase to our experiment. So, we incorporated 3 sets of ten sit ups then timed
the number of sit ups per minute. Each member of the group computed the mean number of sit ups for
these two weeks. To conclude our study for the last week days 21 to 28 we established our new
baseline without an intervention. From these guidelines we predicted that our group was would gain
strength throughout the course of the study. Our group predicted that we would all gain abdominal
strength substantially during the intervention period. Therefore as a result there will be a significant
change in our average sit up count per minute on days 21 28. As a result we established a hypothesis
based on the intervention phase of our study: If we perform three sets of sit ups a day, then the
maximum number of sit ups we can complete in a minute will increase. This experiment was designed
so that our hypothesis could be tested. For one we set up our sit up method. The type of sit up used in
our study was the military sit up. According to army.com the proper way to do a sit up involves lying
flat on the floor with your knees bent at a 90 degree angle (Army.com). Someone must hold your
ankles this stabilizes the person further (Army.com). Then fingers should be cross together

Video Game Censorship
Video game censorship is growing in the spotlight as technology grows. Parents are more concerned
these days about the games their children are playing then ever before. There are many kinds of
censorship out there and available for the consumers use. The Entertainment Software Rating Board
(ESRB), self censorship, and video company censorship are just a couple of examples. In some cases
video game censorship is being taken to court. This is where a fine line is drawn because it could
infringe on your first amendment rights which protects our freedom of speech and freedom of press.

One of the roles of the rating systems were to control the amount of sexual content, rate the games
based on the content that was in the game, and to state it in the advertising and the game box. Even
with all the commotion over the mature games, most parents do not allow their children to play. A
graph compiled with information form the ESRB site from a survey they gave parents shows the
differences in how often parents allow their children to play mature games. The number of parents that
allow their children to play mature games is very low compared to those that are never allowed. Most
of the children that are allowed to play these mature games are generally thirteen and older. (ESRB,
2007) The most well known rating system around is from the Electronic Software Rating Board also
known as the ESRB. The ESRB was established in 1994 after an increase in the amount of video
games that were being produced. The ESRB is a non profit self regulatory body that came about by
the Electronic Software Association or the ESA. The roles of the ESRB are to assign games a rating
based on their content, enforce industry advertising guidelines, and to ensure responsible online
privacy practices. The rating system is fairly easy to understand. Ratings are broken down into six
different categories which are Early Childhood, for children three and older; Everyone;

Witch Of Edmonton
The Witch of Edmonton, written in 1621 by John Ford, Thomas Dekker and William Rowley, depicts
an old and lonely woman, Elizabeth Sawyer, whose false reputation as a witch drives her to utilize the
devil s power and take her revenge on those who made her do so. The story is based on the real
historical figure of Elizabeth Sawyer, a woman who was put to death for witchcraft in 1621. The case
of Sawyer, as portrayed in both the play and her true interrogation, proves, in multiple ways, how the
underlying cause of witchcraft is the selfish desire for power. Not only does Elizabeth Sawyer herself
emit this desire for power through her prideful need for revenge, but the villagers of Edmonton also
emit this desire for power through their use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is not to say that villagers simply created the myth of witchcraft on the spot as a means of
obtaining a scapegoat, but, rather, that they latched onto rumours, morphed from old folklore and
spread about the village, of witches that would cause misfortune to their neighbours. This is exactly
the kind of behaviour we see in the play, as the villagers of Edmonton use the accusation of witchcraft
in order to wield power, not only over Sawyer herself, but over the events in their village which they
wish to prevent. The villagers appear to have known that Sawyer is a witch for some time, but it is not
until a villager blames her for their misfortunes, that others speak out and claim that she has wronged
them, too. For example, towards the end of the play, Old Banks claims that his horse has become
suddenly ill, and says and this, I ll take my death upon t, is long of this jadish witch Mother Sawyer. A
countryman then speaks out, and claims that he found his wife and a serving man thrashing in [his]

Friedlander s Summary
In the reading today, Friedlander says that in the forties and fifties Elvis Presley went through three
developmental periods of music. He began listening to a wide variety of music in his first
developmental period of music. He transitioned into the specifics of blues, R B, gospel and
country/rock. After he signed to RCA Records he created a version of classic rock and roll, as his final
development of music. Friedlander calls this the three Rs: roots, rockability, and rock and roll. He
continues on in this passage about Elvis Presley and his early life, and music career. He talks about
Elvis s life such as his relationship with his mother in his early life to his struggles he had later in life.

Family Law Research Paper
Family law is an area of law that is very interesting to me. Many people are unaware of exactly what
family law is and what it deals with. Most believe that family law is marriage, divorce, child
custody, and murders between members of a family. Their thoughts are indeed correct, but
family law is so much more than that. Below I will discuss my reasons for choosing family law,
plaintiff/defendant,and the tasks of the paralegal.
Family law is an important body of law that defines relationships, rights, and duties in the formation,
ongoing existence, and dissolution of marriage and other family units. If I were to choose an area of

The Free Application For Federal Student Aid
Introduction During week two, we were tasked to conduct a financial analysis of the Johnson family
and assess their ability to independently fund the college educations of their three children. That
analysis determined the two hundred dollars currently contributed monthly to each child s college
fund since each child was born will not fully fund their educations, given their ages, current balances
in each college fund and the annual inflation of college costs. Assuming their available cash flow will
only support the current monthly college fund contributions, alternative methods and financial tools
must be explored to mitigate the shortfall. The purpose of this paper will be to research other college
funding alternatives which may ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, it is equally important for other potential forms of financial aid as many states and colleges
use your FAFSA data to determine your eligibility for state and school aid, and some private financial
aid providers may use your FAFSA information to determine whether you qualify for their aid
(Federal Student Aid, 2017, p.1). Federal Student Aid is a very large program providing more than
$150 billion in federal grants, loans, and work study funds each year to more than 13 million students
paying for college or career school (Federal Student Aid, 2017, p.1). Therefore, the student who is
seeking financial aid to cover a portion of college costs needs to first and foremost complete a FAFSA
application as it is the basis for Federal Student Aid but is also the data source for other forms of
student financial aid. FAFSA applications consider the assets of the parents and the student in
determining the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and will normally expect a higher percentage of
contribution from student assets vice a lower percentage from the parents (Mannaioni Greer 2016).
For determining family or student assets to be assessed against potential financial aid, FAFSA places
emphasis on family or student adjusted gross income as other assets such as retirement accounts, cash
value life insurance, home equity and small business assets are excluded when calculating the EFC.

Defensive Communication Case Studies
I am currently experiencing one relationship that falls within the defensive communication climate. In
this relationship, I experience these four categories of Gibb s climate research control, evaluation,
strategy and certainty (pg. 357). These categories I would use to describe the relationship I have with
my mother. She often applies these four categories of Gibbs climate research in her communication
with me. When it comes to control my mother wants to dominate what is being spoken about and does
not like to hear a difference of opinion or any comments at that. Secondly, evaluation it is easy for her
to tell me what I am doing wrong or tell me what someone else is doing right. The third category is
strategy in which she does not want to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Administration Of Civil Law
The Administration of Civil Law
In 1996 Lord Woolf reconstructed his review on Civil Justice which led to the Access to Justice Act
1999. There were a number of criticisms within the system and Lord Woolf s aim was to reduce cost,
delay and complexity within the system and increase access to justice. (Elliot Quinn, 2015).
There are currently 216 county courts that are solely concerned with civil work. Around 170 of them
are divorce county courts and have jurisdiction to hear undefended divorce and adoption or
guardianship cases. In the High Court, civil work, divorce and family matters still remain, though
there is a separate Family Court which was introduced in April 2014. Next is the court of Appeal,
followed by the Supreme Court. (i.b.i.d).
Question One:
Before a trial or case management begins, a case must first be allocated to one of the three tracks;
small claims, fast track or multi track. This will determine the future conduct of proceedings. In order
to determine which track would be the most appropriate the court gives questionnaires to each party.
The answers to the questionnaires will help to determine in which track the case would be dealt with
best.
If Harriet were to claim a value of £10,000 or less then this would be the small claims track. In this
procedure she would be advised to contact an experienced adviser, such as a Citizens Advice Bureau,
usually one close to her. In the outcome of most cases the court would not order for the solicitors costs

Summary Of Nature s Metropolis By Cronon
In the novel Nature s Metropolis by William Cronon, the author examines the city of Chicago in the
context of the environmental and economic factors that has made it a trade center. Additionally, the
novel presents the case for a looser definition of nature in relationship to urban centers emphasizing
the interconnectedness of both spaces and the role of environmental and anthropogenic factors in
shaping them. Interconnectedness to the point that Cronon encourages readers to view the city and
hinterlands related to it as a multitude of overlapping market and resource regions (Cronon 278).
Viewing the landscape through this anthropocentric lens where all spaces are involved in the
economics of the region elucidates the relationships present and breaks down the abstract walls
between city and hinterland. This essay will critically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without sunshine, ecosystems would be confined to abiotic elements and mostly bacterial organisms
and the economy would not exist sans the people that drive the exchanges that make it possible.
Conversely, sunshine is converted into food for plants which can then be consumed by another
organism (and another organism...etc.) or converted into building materials. In either case, the
sunshine is converted into something with some market value which is what Cronon describes as the
wealth of nature despite the permutations it may go through before it s final use (Cronon 150).
Consequently, economy is reliant on the ecosystem in which it exists and of which it is a part and vice
versa. For example, the prevalence of logging would vary by location and time of year and the forests
in the area would accordingly have different appearances (Cronon 156 157). This meant that the
people in an area adapted to their surroundings based on the shared pressures that other nonhuman

The Terrestrial And Aquatic Intelligence Of Linda Hogan Essay
In his article The Terrestrial and Aquatic Intelligence of Linda Hogan (1999), Donelle N. Dreese
stresses that water (is) a recurring image for physical and psychological healing in a contemporary
world of sexism, drought, violence, and hunger. (Dreese 1999: 8) The four writers studied in this
thesis use an ecofeminist activism that brings together women and water imagery to expose male
exploitation of women and nature on an aquatic terrain. (Dreese 2002: 73) However, the researcher s
analysis of oppression and exploitation focuses not only on the mutual oppression of women and
elements of nature (here water) but on how one oppressive system is interrelated with all forms of
oppression as well, whether these forms are based on gender (women), natural elements (water), race
(American Indians), or on ethnicity and cultural minority (Nubians). The interrelatedness of
oppressive systems is explained in Huey li Li quotation of what Sheila Collins states that racism,
sexism, class exploitation, and ecological destruction are four interlocking pillars upon which the
structure of patriarchy rests. (Li 289) In addition, Karen J. Warren asserts, Andy Smith quotes, that
because all feminists do or must oppose the logic of domination which keeps oppressive conceptual
frameworks in place, all feminists must also oppose any isms of domination that are maintained and
justified by that logic of domination. (Smith 21) To support the notion of the interrelatedness of

routes spread religions in the process, however they differ in the dangers the traders faced while on the
trade routes. The dangers traders in the Indian ocean trade networks were piracy and the risk of

Power Behind Dreamcatchers
Dreamcatchers are supposed to keep the bad dreams away. Little kids are given these when they are
young to keep the night terrors away. Most people don t even know their background or origin. The
lack of this knowledge leave people to believing in something less special than it could be. It is
important for them to realize the knowledge and power behind the dreamcatcher. Dreamcatchers are
made the way they are to let the positive dreams slip through the holes, to glide down the feathers to
the sleeping person below. Negative dreams would get caught in the web, and got away when the first
light from the sun hit the dreamcatcher. This is why you must have the dream catcher above your bed
at night. The hoop of the dreamcatcher is a symbol for strength and unity from Native Americans of
North America. Then other tribes think that the positive dreams get stuck in the web, and the negative
dreams go through the holes in the web. Dreamcatchers are a tradition of Native American ... Show

  • 2. Orientalism And Imperialism In Mcbryde s A Passage To India caves produce, are of snakes and worms. Mrs. Moor is sunk in apathy and cynicism. Her romance with India is over. On their return from picnic, Aziz behaves like a child in the face of the Raj officials, who intend to arrest him on charge of an attempted crime. Only Fielding, a British, can keep him calm and sane. Fielding is portrayed as a superior human being who is in control of everything. The Indians, including Aziz, wail and weep at this misfortune. McBryde, the British police officer, has an Orientalist doctrine about the Indians. All natives who live south of latitude 30 are criminals at heart. The psychology of the people, McBryde tells Fielding, is different in India. The collector declares India to be a poisonous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The study has proved its basic proposition that A Passage to India is a colonialist discourse and as one form of Orientalism has strengthened and reinforced the stereotype image of India and Indians. The study has shown that Forster has not made even a passing reference to the oppression and the pandemic brutalities of the natives by the colonizers. He has not mentioned any Indian leader or the struggle put up by the Indians to get rid of their oppressors. The study has also shown the deep link between culture and imperialism. The Indians are shown to have assimilated the culture of their masters .The Indians are portrayed as ashamed of themselves, of their culture and of their identity. Throughout the novel, the Indians are presented as lesser people, who cannot manage their affairs like mature, responsible individuals. This is the projection of the European hegemonic assumptions, which have been exposed by the present study. The analysis also has highlighted the portrayal of the internal divisions and infighting among the Indians, on social and religious grounds. This was meant to justify the presence of the British in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hockley In Titanic The Titanic Depth of the Heart of the Ocean Ahh, open your heart to me, Rose, pleads Caledon Hockley of the young Rose in James Cameron s film, Titanic, just after he gives her a most expensive diamond. The actor Billy Zane plays Hockley as a callous, jaded, been there done that sophisticate who seems to want her heart simply because he believes it is for sale and he has a right to it. His blindness to higher motives in love totally disqualifies him from being worthy of Rose DeWitt Bukater, played by Kate Winslet. But perhaps it is also the opaque nature of love itself that defeats him. This scene between Hockley and Rose is one of several ways in which Cameron develops the idea of the closed heart ... But then Rose hears a newscast about it, sees her picture on TV and calls the ship, asking, I was just wondering if you had found the heart of the ocean yet, Mr. Lovett? The literal gem, then, serves to drive the plot. People explore wrecks for the challenge and for scientific purposes, but Cameron has Brock Lovett, played by Bill Paxton, and his salvage crew searching for a diamond. This motivation works on two levels. It gives a reason for the dangerous and expensive dive that the people sitting in the dark theater can appreciate. Many people in this materialistic world can relate to and understand betting one s life and fortune on a diamond that rivals the Hope diamond in value. On an artistic level, though, the search for material wealth parallels the confidence that the Titanic s owners place in material goods and technology. And

One of the many groups of people to come to America and help build into what she is today was the Scots. In order to discuss the Scottish immigration you must understand why they immigrated, what type of prejudice they faced, and what role the Scots now have in today s America. Though the Scots did not have the influx of people immigrating as the Irish, Italian, or English they had a major influence on the development of America. When did the first Scottish arrive and why did they come? The first Scots in America probably came with the Vikings is what Wikipedia says on when the first Scots came to America. So much so that at the time of our first federal census (1790) people of Scottish (including Scottish Irish) origins made up more than six percent of the population. (geneologymagazine.com) By the year 2000 approximately 1.5 million Scots have immigrated to America. (Gormley) So were the Scottish discriminated against or did they discriminate. The truth of the matter is that though the Scottish was not discriminated against, they did participate in discrimination. The Scottish was some of the main farmers of cotton and tobacco. Because of this the Scottish owned many slaves and fought to be able to keep the African Americans slaves. Their discrimination against this race would continue well into the 1960 s. This would include discriminating against them in jobs, whether that being not hiring because of color, or not promoting for the same reason. For the most part the Scottish did real well for themselves once they were in America. A fair went on to have children who became presidents; Andrew Jackson was one of those children. Along with Andrew Jackson there were a few more Scots to help sign the Declaration of Independence. Many presidents later would be of Scottish decent. • 9. Kitagawa Utamaro And Paul Gauguin s Use Of Color Techniques Describe specifically what the term arbitrary color means, a color used at random for objects that have a common color, such as, a tree has green leaves, but we choose to make the leave purple or making the sun black, the clouds green, or the sky yellow, etc. Who was the first artist to employ the technique? I would have to say Katsushika Hokusai, Kitagawa Utamaro, and And¯o Hiroshige had a role in the technique. The technique was used in And¯o Hiroshige color woodcut print, ( Moon Pine at Ueno from One Hundred Views of Famous Places in Edo ), (Pg. 27), because of the color use. The colors seem to be out of place, such as, the sky s appearance being that of black, blue, and green, also the tree appears to have a redder tent than what we would normally see in nature. Hiroshige and other Japanese artists had gotten young artist thinking about color, arbitrary color, and pure color. One of the artist that took the color techniques from color woodcut prints and Japanese prints was Paul Gauguin. Gauguin was truly the first to employ arbitrary color techniques, which can be seen in his (Vision after the Sermon), (Pg. 60), with vivid red paint in the back ground, splashes of green and blue tenting on the nuns faces, these colors are not known in nature, and they are non descriptive. It just isn t natural to see these colors placed this way. Thus, Gauguin s paintings influenced younger artist and affected their ideas in the Nabis and Fauve periods. In fact, different types of craft can be traced back to prehistoric times when Neanderthal men started painting on the walls of the cave. Throughout the centuries, art has evolved to several forms among which are sculpting, painting, and even poetry. Art is the product or process of deliberately arranging items in a way that influences and affects one or more of the senses, emotions, and intellect. It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music, literature, film, photography, sculpture, and paintings. The ... Archaeologists have also found a fragment of rock painting preserved in a limestone rock shelter in the Kimberley region of North Western Australia, that is dated 40 000 years old. There are examples of cave paintings all over the world in India, France, Spain, Portugal, China, Australia, etc. In Western cultures oil painting and watercolor painting have rich and complex traditions in style and subject matter. In the East, ink and color ink historically predominated the choice of media with equally rich and complex traditions. Modern and Contemporary Art has moved away from the historic value of craft and documentation in favour of concept; this led some to say in the 1960s that painting, as a serious art form, is dead. This has not deterred the majority of living painters from continuing to practice painting either as whole or part of their work. The vitality and versatility of painting in the 21st century belies the premature declarations of its demise. In an epoch characterized by the idea of pluralism, there is no consensus as to a representative style of the age. Important works of art continue to be made in a wide variety of styles and aesthetic temperaments, the marketplace being left to judge merit. Among the continuing and current directions ... • 12. The Museum Of Fine Art The Museum of Fine Art in Houston, Texas has a variety of art collections. To be precise, the canopic jar is mounted on a large pedestal among other sculptures. This Canopic Jar was made in Egypt during the dynasty XXVI, 664 525 B.C. It was made from limestone. The jar was masterfully carved from stone and subsequently painted over. It is a historical masterpiece and it is relatively in good condition. Such stone jars were used to house the organs of the deceased. Their organs were put in these canopic jars during the mummification process. The lids of these stone jars have a human face. The faces were carved to represent the four sons of the god Horus. The three dimensional jar is solid and quite large. It is well displayed in a spacious environment. The lid of the jar is organic due to the life like face that stares back at the viewer. The rest of the jar is cylindrical with graceful proportions. The size of the jar interpenetrates with the surrounding space. If you go camping, you usually build a fire to sit around at night. Have you ever wondered why a marshmallow cooks without touching the flame, why the smoke rises, or why water in a pan boils? Heat can move from one object to another in three different ways: conduction, convection and radiation. Some sources of heat may include the following: the sun, friction, and the earth. Life on earth depends on the sun. The sun provides heat/light for the entire solar system. A person could generate a fire by rubbing two sticks together. The Earth contains much heat seep inside. Some of the heat escapes to the surface ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thermal energy radiates through air from a fire causing the fire s energy to transfer to the marshmallow. As stated before, thermal conductor occurs when particles of warmer matter bump into particles of cooler matter and transfer some of their thermal energy to the cooler particles. Conduction is usually faster in certain solids and liquids than in gases. Returning to the example of a camp fire; what happens if you use an old metal hangar to roast hot dogs? As the hot dogs cooks, the fire heats the end of the hanger. If we leave the hanger in the fire long enough, eventually the end we are holding will become too hot for us to handle. The flames to the metal were transferred by the heat, and then from molecule to molecule in the hanger. Now, what would have happened if you had chosen a stick to roast your hot dog? Though the stick may have caught fire, it would not have conducted the heat to your hand. This is because wood is a very poor heat conductor. Heat insulators are materials that do not let heat move through them easily. They do not conduct heat well. Plastic, wood and some fabrics are good thermal insulators. Thermal insulators are good at keeping heat out and keeping heat in. A winter scarf is a good example of a thermal insulator. It stops the heat from your body escaping into the cold air. It is man made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. Sometimes it falls on generation to be great. You can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom. Nelson Mandela. Poverty at its worst involves hunger leading to starvation, inadequate shelter or housing and lack of clothing. Justice is the idea that all people, everywhere in the world, have the right to a life of dignity. This means a life free from poverty, violence, discrimination or human rights violations. A world where justice exists in a world where all people are included in a society and all people can claim their rights to education, shelter, and health care regardless of how poor or rich they are. Whenever we speak of poverty we must speak of injustice. But more than that, we must speak of HOPE. To give hope we must have it and if we are to build hope in others it will require something of humanity. It is found in our actions. Poverty is a state of deprivation, or a lock of the usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions. The most common measure of poverty in the U.S is the poverty threshold set by the U.S government. Almost half of the world over three billion people live on less than $2.50 a day. The case of Sawyer, as portrayed in both the play and her true interrogation, proves, in multiple ways, how the underlying cause of witchcraft is the selfish desire for power. The interrelatedness of oppressive systems is explained in Huey li Li quotation of what Sheila Collins states that racism, sexism, class exploitation, and ecological destruction are four interlocking pillars upon which the structure of patriarchy rests. (Li 289) In addition, Karen J. Warren asserts, Andy Smith quotes, that because all feminists do or must oppose the logic of domination which keeps oppressive conceptual frameworks in place, all feminists must also oppose any isms of domination that are maintained and justified by that logic of domination.
