Fa Mu Lan No Name Woman
The No Name Woman is a failure in Chinese society, but starkly contrasted by the success and
fulfillment of traditional expectations demonstrated in the woman warrior, Fa Mu Lan. In the second
section of Kingston s account, White Tiger, the author controversially develops her own retelling of
this famous myth with herself as the legendary Chinese figure. Kingston initiates this section stating,
when we Chinese girls listened to the adults talk story, we learned that we failed if we grew up to be
but wives or slaves (Kingston 19). The words of her elders engrained in Kingston and her female
peers their place of women, enslaved to their husbands and bound to housework. Yet Kingston does
not accept this reality and instead plunges into a powerful tale of a female who not only overcomes
gender roles but is the champion of the entire Chinese nation. Fa Mu Lan is a swordswoman, who
utilizes her physical and magical training to cause social justice. Despite her occupations with valor
and justice, however, Kingston s character also finds time to nurture a child and attend the domestic
duties traditionally assigned to women, a challenge to ancient stereotypes and an affirmation of
modern ideas of women balancing families with their careers. Similarly, the weapons Kingston yields
are her words and the truth of her experience she artfully relates.

Stereotypes In She s Awesome Have It
The television show She s Gotta Have It, is a show on Netflix based on the movie from 1986. In
season 1 episode 10 #Nolas Choice (3 Da Hard Way) , the main character Nola invite three men;
Greer, Jamie, and Mars to a Thanksgiving dinner. None of the men know that the other men have been
invited to dinner, so they each think they are having a solo dinner with the lovely Nola Darling. Nola
invites each of them there because she is sleeping with all three of them and she wants them to finally
meet each other. Although the men were skeptical at first, they all ended up having a great evening
eating dinner, smoking marijuana, looking at an interesting painting, dancing, and competing for Nola
s affection. Without Greer s egocentrism and stereotyping, and ... Show more content on

Although it is not as bad as his egocentrism, it still plays a big contribution to the episode. Instead of
asking Nola why she is sleeping with all three of them, he asks What kind of lady does something like
this? This is him stereotyping women as if they are not supposed to behave in such a manor. This
prevents him from understanding from her point of view. He is basically stereotyping that women are
not supposed to have more than one sexual partner at a time. He does not think of the other side to the
equation, which is Nola not all women are the same. Nola Darling s all or nothing is her main
impediment. All or nothing thinking stops her from understanding or even caring about how the men
feel about the dinner. For example when Greer asks why she invited them, she responds by asking him
if he wants to leave. She is thinking either you are with it or you can leave. This prevents her from
understanding the situation from their point of view. All she sees is that she is letting them know who
the other men are in her life, not whether or not they are okay with the way things are happening. They

Representation In Heart Of Darkness Essay
The Others Representation in Conrad s Heart of Darkness
Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness is one of the most known novels in English literature. The story
begins when Marlow, who works for a Belgian company, went on a journey to the heart of Africa as a
steamship captain. Through his journey, he heard the name of Kurtz for the first time. Then the name
is repeated many times, which made Marlow, who is our narrator in addition to another unknown
narrator, interested to know about Kurtz. Kurtz works for the company as an ivory trader in the Congo
which was at that time one of Belgium s colonies. According to Marlow Kurtz was the ideal English
man, or as what he called him a remarkable man , who holds the banner of civilization. Marlow s

Or does it belong to the company? I think it belongs to the Congo and to the Congolese. Neither Kurtz
nor the company has the right to claim that the ivory belongs to him.
Finally, I believe that Conrad s Heart of Darkness embodies racism to Africa and for women, in which
both are ignorant, silenced and nameless. Conrad s sympathy with Africans under the colonization of
Belgium, does not give him the right to represent them and to celebrate English Imperialism. Albeit
that people of Africa have different skin color or different shape from the European, they are still
human beings and no one has the right to dehumanize them.
Chinua Achebe in his essay An Image of Africa asks not to consider Conrad s Heart of Darkness as
one of the best English novels, because the Africans suffer for a very long time by the dehumanization
and by the European s representation of them. Chinua Achebe states that:
I am talking about a book which parades in the most vulgar fashion prejudices and insults from which
a section of mankind has suffered untold agonies and atrocities in the past and continues to do so in
many ways and many places today. I am talking about a story in which the very humanity of black
people is called in question.

Burnap Brothers Research Paper
As a result of the Burnap brothers great influence on him and his experiences at the Chester Academy,
Blanchard decided to attend Middlebury College, which was Burnap s alma mater, from 1828 1832.
At Middlebury College, he was very active in the Philomathesian Literary Society and studied
parliamentary procedure and learned how to debate. He also published, The Undergraduate, the first of
many newspapers he would start throughout his lifetime. After graduation, at the age of twenty one in
1832, he became the preceptor at Plattsburg Academy in the state of New York, where he worked to
improve the education system and began a campaign that advocated for the immediate end of slavery .

During this time he and Mary were separated, geographically, but they still maintained their
relationship, and as a result, his proposal of marriage was sent to her in the mail. They were married

Blanchard was required to travel on a regular basis because of his involvement in the anti slavery
movement. His journeys provided him with many opportunities and eventually led to several
academic offers. In 1843, Jonathan traveled to London as a delegate to the world s Anti Slavery
Convention. The next year he traveled to Quincy, Illinois to deliver a commencement address to the
Adelphi Theopolis Mission Institute. From 1845 to 1857 he was the president of Knox College in
Illinois. In 1860 he turned down the offer for the presidency at Iowa College and a nomination to run
for congress. He did, however, accept the offer to be the president of the Illinois Institute, which
would eventually become Wheaton College. His wife, Mary, died in 1890 in East Las Vegas, New
Mexico while traveling in support of Jonathan s involvement in politics. Two years later, Blanchard
died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, May 14th, 1892 in the home of Herman and Julia Fischer .
Jonathan Blanchard became the president of Wheaton College in 1860, a pivotal time in American
history, as the Civil War would start just one year later in 1861. Because the war was such a

God. The purpose of the Book of Proverbs is to teach people how to attain wisdom, discipline, and a
prudent life, and how to do what is right, just, and fair. In short, to apply divine wisdom to daily life
and to provide moral instruction. In the following paragraphs, we will compare the two Books. (Life

These proverbs are short poems (usually in couplet form), containing a holy mixture of common sense
and timely warnings. Although they are not meant to teach doctrine, a person who follows their advice
will walk closely with God. The word proverb comes from a Hebrew word that means to rule or to
govern, and these sayings, reminders, and admonitions provide advice for governing our lives.

Investigating the effect of varying concentration on the reaction between magnesium ribbon and
hydrochloric acid
Aim
It is to tell how the reaction between magnesium and hydrochloric acid will be effected if we change
the concentration of hydrochloric acid.
Introduction
In the experiment the magnesium reacts with the hydrochloric acid to create magnesium chloride and
hydrogen. The balanced formula for this is: Mg(s) + 2HCL(aq) MgCl2(aq) + H2(g)
Magnesium + hydrochloric acid Magnesium Chloride + Hydrogen
Magnesium will react with hydrochloric acid, because it is higher in the reactivity series than
hydrogen. The magnesium displaces the hydrogen in the acid, so it forms magnesium chloride and
hydrogen gas.
Magnesium strip ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is to compare with the other diagrams to see what the change is and if the reaction rate has
decreased or increased.
The first one is to see what will happen if I change the temperature of the solution. As the temperature
increases the speed and the power at which the acid particles hit each other increases, making the
number of successful collisions with the magnesium strip increase.
The second one is to show how increasing the mass of the magnesium strip can increase the rate of
reaction slightly because of the increased surface area but it is only slightly increased on the sides and
so this is proportional to the rate of reaction of the original diagram. It is only slower than the original
reaction because there is more of it to react with and produces more of the products.
Figure 3 shows the concentration of the hydrochloric acid increased so there are more particles to have
more successful collisions. This is a faster reaction then the original reaction.
The final reaction has the same amount of particles of acid and the magnesium, but the magnesium
has been cut to increase the surface area. This makes the acid particles more likely to have more
successful collisions each second than the original reaction.
There are also many factors that I could record like the weight of the solution and the time it took for
the magnesium strip to dissolve, but
I am only recording the hydrogen produced. I chose

The Modern American View of Disability
In Rosmarie Garland Thomson: The politics of Staring , expresses how our society has changed over
time. She views human s theories in four different visual rhetoric s which in this case I am going to
call them speechmaking s: the wondrous, the realistic, the sentimental and the exotic. From these four
figures of speech Garland has shown our inclination to see disabled people by the way they are
discriminated by the rest of society. Garland makes references to this by showing pictures and
examples that highlights how the modern American world views disability.
The first figure of speech Garland discusses is the wondrous. She points out how the wondrous
represent monsters, giants, meaning the good and evil, The wondrous viewpoint is defined by the
association of the disabled with the normal, creating a disconnect in what the viewer sees as able. By
visualizing a disabled person moving out physical trials ranging from menial tasks to physical feats of
strength and will, the viewer creates a hollowness between the dexterity and capability to perform and
the assumed lack of abilities of the subject. By saying The antecedents of the wondrous disabled
figures are the monsters of antiquity, who inspired awe, foretold the future, or bore divine signs, and
freaks, who were the celebrities in nineteenth century dime museums and sideshows she shows how

The, Outliers, By Malcolm Gladwell
Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day. (Jim Rohn) Malcolm
Gladwell s, Outliers, published in 2008, makes arguments about what it means to be successful, and
how one can become successful. Gladwell specifically mentions the 10,000 Hour Rule which states
that anyone who wants to reach a definite level of mastery must perform 10,000 hours of practice until
that level is reached. Some believe this rule to be invalid as those who are successful are born talented.
Though I recognize that some people are born naturally gifted, I still contend that anyone who wants
to become great at what they do, needs to do supplementary amounts of practicing as it utilizes one s
potential to the fullest as Gladwell ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gracyn, always having relied on her natural ability, was unaware of the hard work and practicing it
would take for her to succeed and make one of the teams. She began putting in much more effort,
time, and practice. Consequently, she made the Ohio State University cheer team. Success is the initial
ability plus the extra practice one is willing to put in to achieve it. Extensive practicing leads to these
behaviors becoming a way of life. There s an old Latin saying Repetitio mater studiorum est. which
translates to Repetition is the mother of all learning. Repetition is the key to proper practice as it is the
best way for a person to learn. The more a behavior repeats, it becomes habitual. There is a moment
where you become so good at something that you don t have to think about what you are doing, it
comes naturally. A basic example of this is tying your shoes. We learned at a very young age how to
tie our shoes. We kept practicing and practicing until the point where it doesn t take any thought of
what you are doing. Natural talent paired with repetition creates a natural success.
Practice is beneficial only if the person genuinely is interested in what they are doing. Raymond T.
Hightower, president of WisdomGroup software company states, The elite don t just work harder than
everybody else. At some point the elites fall in love with practice to the point where they want to do
little else. Those people

Society Views On Abortion
Abortion is currently one of the most heated topics in society. The different views of abortion are
mainly based on the ethical, biological and religious ideas. Abortion is defined as a medical procedure
used to end a pregnancy and cause the death of the fetus. There are three basic problems society faces:
status of the fetus, rights of both a woman and a fetus, and whether the harm of restricting abortion
outweighs the loss of life caused by having an abortion (S1). The different views of abortions are
summarized by two different names. The first one name would be pro life which are people who are
opposed to abortion. Society likes to believe that these individuals suggest that anyone in favor of
abortion are murderers and are also anti life (S1). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dilation and evacuation is one method of abortion used after eighteen weeks. It is similar to the
dilation and curettage method used at twelve weeks gestation but instead of the loop shaped knife used
in dilation and curettage abortions, a pair of forceps is inserted into the womb to grasp part of the
fetus. This instrument is then used to grasp any bones of the baby and pull them out of the woman.
This process is repeated until the fetus is completely dismembered and removed. This procedure is
known as one of the more vulgar procedures because in most cases, the child s spine and skull must be
broken in order for it to come out properly. Another type of abortion used after the woman has reached
eighteen weeks is the salt poisoning injection. During this procedure, a needle is injected into the
woman s abdomen. This allows a strong salt solution to be injected into the baby s sac. The baby
swallows this fluid and is potentially poisoned by it. This solution is known to act as a corrosive, and
burn the outer layer of skin. This procedure differs from others because the mother still goes into labor
and births a child, dead or still

Why Did Sitting Bull Play In The Battle Of Little Bighorn
5. What hard dilemma did President Grant face after the discovery of gold in the Black Hills? Why did
this conflict between minors and Indians result in the Great Sioux War of 1876? What role did Sitting
Bull play in the Battle of Little Bighorn?
4. Why did Sitting Bull oppose the building of the Northern Pacific Railroad? What act of Bravery did
he perform at the Battle of Arrow Creek that added to his reputation as legendary leader of his people?
In 1874 gold was discovered in the Black Hills. President Grant was forced to make a harsh decision
because the Black Hills were located in the Great Sioux Reservation that the Indians had gained under
the Treaty of 1868. President Grant allowed miners to enter the Black Hills and insisted that this act
would be legalized. Government attempted to acquire the Black Hills where the gold was located
however Sitting Bull was against the sale of the land. The Great War of Sioux 1876 resulted from a
disagreement between miners and Indians. Miners had already began to come to the Black Hills to
mine for goal and the government allowed these things to happen. Because Sitting Bull and his army
men were not sure of what would happened when the white men entered they were forced to attack in
fear. They had not interfered with the gold rush, and although they had not signed the Treaty of 1868,
in sanctioned their residence in the unceded territory. (Utley pg34). Sitting Bull gave orders to his

Organizational Functions And Employee Relations During The...
Since the turn of the 19th century, there has been a dramatic overhaul of administrative practices.
Through trial and error, organizations have altered their management practices in pursuit of better
results. These changes in administrative theory can be sorted into five different themes. This includes
organization functions, employee relations, open systems, social equity, and client oriented
(Cronkhite, 2012). Each theme provides a unique perspective on how to run a successful agency. The
purpose of this paper will be focusing on the themes of organization functions and employee relations
during the industrial era.
Before discussing the administrative theories, it is important to understand the historical context
behind these theories. The industrial era is the time period from the 1880s to the 1950s, which
represents the aftermath of the industrial revolution (Cronkhite, 2012). The industrial revolution is
often revered for its significant advancements in technology and manufacturing. There was a striking
shift in focus from agricultural goods to manufactured goods in factory settings (Harley, 2003). This
influenced a mass migration of the population from rural areas to bustling cities (Harley, 2003).
Commencing an age of economic prosperity and dominance in America.
Despite this significant advancement in industry and economic growth, the industrial era introduced
an abundance of problems (Harley, 2003). Horrifying living conditions, overcrowding, child labor, and

Linear Spirometry Lab Report
Thirteen adult subjects (five male and eight female) 19 23 years of age were gathered to perform a
forced expiratory volume (FVC) maneuver and have pulmonary testing conducted during increasing
intensity exercise. Respiratory measures for tidal flow volume loops were measured using pulmonary
spirometry. For this experiment, an MC TA 200V Metabolic Cart was used to collect data. The
equipment was setup as follows: a sterilized mouthpiece was attached to a filter configured with one
way valves to ensure only inspired air came in to the system from the outside and the expired air was
sent to the apparatus. Upon configuring the mouthpiece, it was attached to clean bore tubing, which
was then connected to the flow head. From the flow head, two tubes separately connect to the
spirometry pod. Before the first subject performed their trials, the spirometry pod was zeroed once. If
an additional file was used in LabChart for a new subject it would be zeroed an additional time. It was
important to ensure that the data being placed into the LabChart data pad contained the first traces of

As far as the claims are concerned, this is a second opportunity for amending them before the
international preliminary examination starts (the first being by way of Article 19 amendments
submitted to the International Bureau after receipt of the international search report). In practice, most
applicants filing a demand for international preliminary examination do not make use of the
possibility of amending the claims under Article 19, unless publication of the amendments is desired

Fake News As An Unreliable Form Of Satire
The emergence and growing population of satire holds a strong position in the definition of modern
journalism. The term satire has been replaced in the mainstream by the phrase fake news . This title
implies an unreliable form of storytelling meant to translate to trickery, as this form of news can hold
just as much power in today s media as legitimate news outlets. Regardless of it s popularity, the word
fake should not be considered accurate, nor is it true to the real meaning. Satire typically aims to
entertain an audience or grab its attention in a more interesting way, while news reports capture an
event simply as it was. However, both forms of news may be guilty of carrying bias in their stories,
one more obviously than the other. Fake news , still a form of journalism, carries a satirical form of
political commentating that is still necessary in the world of reporting, just in a different format and
done for a different purpose.
The success and impact of satirical news stories rely on the consumer s ability to understand this form
of irony. If this effect is achieved, a story can be just as beneficial as any other form of media. Popular
satirical figure John Oliver agreed with this in reference to the use of irony in relation to the viewer,
stating in an interview that his job required making jokes about the news and sometimes we need to
research things deeply to understand them. (Oliver, 2014). This form of storytelling is not always
successful. The audience

Hysterectomy And Fibroids
Hysterectomy and Fibroids A fibroid is a tumor or lump made of muscle cells and other tissue that
grow within the wall of the uterus (Illinois Department of Public Health, 2015). According to the
UCLA Obstetrics and Gynecology team, fibroids are the most frequently seen tumors of the female
reproductive system... twenty to fifty percent of women of reproductive age have fibroids, although
not all are diagnosed. Some estimates state that up to thirty to seventy seven percent of women will
develop fibroids sometime during their childbearing years... in ninety nine percent of fibroid cases, the
tumors are benign (UCLA Health, 2016). Uterine fibroids are the most common cause for a
hysterectomy. A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus. Hysterectomy is the second most
frequently performed surgical procedure (after cesarean section) for U.S. women who are of
reproductive age... By the age of sixty, more than one third of all women have had a hysterectomy
(National Women s Health Network, 2015). Risk factors associated with uterine fibroids are: women

The Link Between Market Baseline And The Public Objectives
3.2 The link between the market baseline and the public objectives In some situations, countries often
provided a loan to specific enterprises or made some advantageous policies in order to achieve public
goals. Hence, some people questioned whether the public objectives should be taken into
consideration when the benefit analysis is operated. This question has raised great controversy. Some
people think that the determination of subsidies and the public objectives are two different matters,
while others argue that the public objectives should be taken into account. They further declared that
the government, which pursues public goals should be tested by public investor standard, rather than
the private investor standard. From the perspective of the author, the public objectives should not be
taken into account when the advantage analysis in the subsidy law is operated. A typical case which
was not officially confirmed could provide us some inspirations.

Persuasive Essay Voting
The United States uses a voting system to allow it s citizens voice to be heard and have an influence
on politics. When a person turns 18 they are considered an adult and also gain the privilege to vote.
There is some belief that including more people in voting would benefit the nation more because it
would lead to a more accurate representation. So the article talks about different perspective on
allowing people who are 16 17 years of age to vote. People who are under the age of 18 should not be
able to vote because their unknowledgeable about how politics works, the age group has one of the
lowest voting rate, and they don t have enough perspective. So people of the age of 16 or 17 they are
not yet prepared to take on this responsibility and wouldn t be able to carry it out.
A person who is in the age group of 16 to 17 would be enrolled in the 11th or 12th grade meaning they
have not taken a government class or are currently enrolled in one. Students don t take a government
class until their senior year of highschool. People need to learn how the government works before they
are able to vote in order to make the best decision based off their political perspective. So say a person
who falls into this group is voting and filling out their paperwork they re not going to understand most
of the term or what choice is best for them. Voting is used to get statistic of what the nation wants in
politics so why let someone who doesn t know anything about politics vote if they re

Essay on The Ghost
Night in the country came like a cloak so that everything outside disappeared. No street lights and a
new moon, whose light couldn t penetrate the many trees, may have had something to do with that.
From any window, the only thing Nate saw when he looked outside was a thick blanket of black and
the occasional flare of a firefly. At nine p.m. he excused himself from his grandparents company as
they watched Secrets of the Dead in their sitting room. He had some dead people s secrets to uncover
himself. He went to the library and carried to his room the two boxes of books he and the twins had
started on earlier. He intended to look through them late into the night and make up for their lack of
progress. But soon his eyes were too droopy to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They landed on top of each other in a straight line about six feet in length. Shock and fear glued Nate
to the bed as the stacking continued until he had to look up to see the last rows. Some unseen force
now directed more books to leave their box and form a new line, connecting to the first row at a thirty
degree angle. The thumping noise softened as the stack rose higher into the air. Another pile of books
soon stretched over Nate s head. The new stack was only a fourth the length of the first row but just as
high. Eerily, Nate s bedroom door opened with the crack he had come to expect from the old
hardware. But never would he have imagined the line of books that floated through the door like they
were dangling from invisible strings. The set of encyclopedias he recognized from the library drifted
over to the first stack and began a third line, angled at thirty degree again so that it made an upside
down V with the other angled line. The new row also stopped at one fourth the length of the original
row. More books crowned the stack until it reached as high as the first two rows. Nate sat unmoving,
hardly breathing and hardly able to believe his eyes. But it seemed the last row of books put an end to
the construction. No more books floated through the door or from boxes. The room was quiet as Nate
eyed the partition of books piled two feet from him. He scooted across the bed to the opposite side and
cautiously tested the floor, afraid

Crime Social Policy
Crime Data and Social Policy
At the beginning of the second chapter, it is described how the statistics of a crime provide a summary
of the whole criminal activity. An accurate statistical picture of a crime benefits the creation of a social
policy. In a national level, the collection of crime statistics come from two major sources, Uniform
Crime Reporting (UCR) Program and National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). The Uniform
Crime Reporting (UCR) Program produces an annual overview of major crime in the United States. It
is also known as the UCR/NIBRS Program. On the other hand, the National Crime Victimization
Survey (NCVS) of the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS): U.S. Department of justice agency

This survey is based up on victim self reports rather the police reports. It is also designed to estimate
the occurrence of all crimes, whether it was reported or not. The NCVS system started functioning in
the year of 1972. The UCR/NIBRS and NCVS differ in that the UCR/NIBRS Programs make use of
data obtained by citizens reports of crime made to enforcement agencies, while the NCVS utilizes
survey data. A similarity between these two is that they both contain data their creators think is
appropriate.
Special Categories of Crime
The crime typology is a classification used to study and describe of criminal behavior such as legal
category, offender motivation, victim behavior, and characteristics of individual offenders. Special
categories of crime include: crimes against women, crime against the elderly, hate crime, corporate

A Lesson Before Dying Literary Analysis
In past years, as well as, in the twenty first century, African Americans are being oppressed and judged
based on the color of their skin. In, A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines, this is the primary
conflict that plagues Jefferson s as well as Grant s everyday life. By pleading guilty to a murder that
he did not commit, Jefferson has to choose to die just as he is, a hog in the white s eyes, or die a man.
On the other hand, Grant, who is his teacher, is faced with being looked down upon by his community
all because of his race and status. He is graced with the challenge of turning Jefferson into a man
before his execution date. It is only a matter of time before they both realize that they cannot change

What do you want me to do? What can I do? You the teacher... Yes, I m the teacher, I said. And I teach
what the white folks around here tell me to teach reading, writing, and rithmetic. They never told me
how to keep a black boy out of a liquor store (Gaines 13). Seen from this line, Grant does not want to
help Jefferson, he thinks that Jefferson is not his problem and that it s not his fault that Jefferson is
going to be executed. This accurately depicts Grant s selfishness, while in the end only helping him to
please his aunt and Jefferson s godmother. This is a turning point in Grant s development as a
character. This marks the point where he learns to accept and no longer wants to fear. And when he
finally decides to take a chance, and not be afraid of the outcome. Grant has a swift change in thinking
as the novel progresses. Seeing things differently and looking deeper into the little things in his life.
They sentence you to death because you were at the wrong place at the wrong time, with no proof that
you had anything at all to do with the crime other than being there when it happened (Gaines 158).
Based on this line, there is an obvious change in Grants perception. He is understanding that the
sooner he realizes what has been laid out to him, the better off he will be. That there is no point in
holding on to the past because there is ultimately nothing he can do to change what has been done. As

Gender Inequality Throughout Middle School And High School
F****ism
Gender inequality is an issue that has been affecting our world for a very long time. We see it all
throughout history, from women entering the workforce for the first time, to women protesting on the
street, fighting for the right to vote. An article in the Wall Street Journal reports that a man who works
full time earns a median of $889 a week, a woman who works full time earns a median of $721 a
week. That s a $168 difference between males and females in the workforce. Also, what about the
horrible names that girls are called throughout middle school and high school? Slut, hoe, whore,
skank, all of these judgmental names are what women are called every day, whether it s true or not.

This not only states that women are weaker and should be thrown to the side, but the use of thrust to

middle to late fourteenth century. Some people today still have the same views on women, and this
happened more than 650 years ago. The fact that these views are still in existence in regards to women
shows that even though we are trying to change, we still have a long way to go. As the books were set
closer to the present, we began to learn about injustices in the 1930s. In Harper Lee s To kill a
Mockingbird, Scout, Jem, and Dill are playing with a tire near the Radley s house. Scout got in the tire
and Jem pushes her, but she couldn t stop and ended up on the Radley s front steps. Scout gets scared
and runs back to Jem and Dill without the tire, and Jem had to get it. See there? Jem was scowling

The Problem Of Weight Watchers
Introduction and Problem Statement
Weight Watchers has faced a number of issues in the past several years, many of which are highlighted
in the case study for this assignment. The company was able to reach a financial high point earlier this
decade in 2011 when it recorded a record breaking 1.8 billion in revenues. However, the company s
finances have slowly dwindled ever since then, culminating in losses for seven straight quarters and
low stock prices at the beginning of 2015. The core of the problems it was facing were relatively
straightforward. The weight loss industry was changing, and Weight Watchers was having difficult
changing along with it. Specifically, the company had troubles modernizing its business model to
account for the digital age as represented by increasing online options for weight loss. This fact was
compounded by the reality that there was greater competition, including that from organizations
whose primary business was to capitalize on digital technology to attract customers. Technologies
such as mobile devices, mobile applications, cloud computing, and social media had made
considerable strides in the way that people were monitoring and attempting to lose weight. Weight
Watchers, however, had had only marginal success using these technologies, and faced the undesirable
situation in which its methods were becoming rapidly outdated.
Financial Analysis: Vision/Mission
The vision of Weight Watchers has always been fairly basic in nature. The company

Reflection The secondary source I chose was my class textbook because the book talks about social
behaviors of mass media in children and adults which I will incorporate throughout my paper to make
my argument stronger. There s chapters in the book that give great detail based on research done, and
since it was done recently it will make my ideas clearer and relatable.
Summary The books main focus is to teach how we are all influenced from our community, and
everyday activities that affect our behavior. I will mainly focus my research from chapter nine on the
ecology of mass media as this chapter goes in depth on how advertisement , and dependency has affect
young children as well as adults.
Evaluation It s no doubt technology has advanced a lot throughout time which can be overlooked by
the impact it has on peoples thoughts. The advance broadcasting has caused changes in sleep habits,
meal arrangements, and use of time: but not in a good way.

actors believe in the myth that if the word Macbeth is said during rehearsal or the performance,
something terribly wrong will happen to the show! That is how many people know about the

Macbeth is a very complicated story! There are many characters and each character each

What the witches told Macbeth could be true or not! The witches have tricked men before

himself. The only way he thought he could be king is if the king died. His wife wants this
prophecy to come true too for her husband. She agrees to sacrifice and kill the king, so Macbeth
does not have to do it. Lady Macbeth and Macbeth both plan to kill the king. This is the part of

Alcott s writing was highly influenced by her upbringing, much like many authors. Transcendentalism
was her father s principle belief and this in turn affected how he lived his life, which affected Alcott s
childhood and eventually her writing. Every follower defined transcendentalism in their own way,
such as idealism, individualism, a movement, a philosophy, or even a religion at times. Her father,
Amos Bronson Alcott, was a founder of the movement that was transcendentalism. Bronson Alcott

Bronson put all his faith in one objective. When that did not pan out for him in the long run, he

Leonardo Da Vinci And His Contributions To Western...
An Analysis of Leonardo da Vinci and
His Contributions to Western Civilization
Leonardo da Vinci is one of the most famous artists to have ever lived, and his contributions to the
development of western civilization are irrefutable. Born on April 15, 1452, near Florence, Italy, one
would not have guessed that he was destined for a life of greatness. He was the illegitimate child of an
up and coming notary and a peasant girl, and he spent most of his childhood with his doting father (
Da Vinci The Renaissance Man. ). At the age of 15, he became an apprentice in the workshop of
Andrea del Verrochio, where his undeniable talent soon became apparent. He remained an apprentice
until 1477, when he left to explore other opportunities. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He then drew vertical lines and a single horizontal line, known as the horizon line. The vertical lines
connected at the vanishing point, in the center of the horizon, giving the illusion of distance and depth
to the two dimensional canvas. Despite the relative simplicity of the method, the results were
revolutionary at the time ( Linear Perspective ).
Linear perspective was not the only tool that da Vinci employed to better his art; da Vinci s excellent
understanding of human anatomy allowed for more life like and three dimensional figures in his
paintings. It is believed that da Vinci s interest in human anatomy began during his apprenticeship
under Verrochio (Heydenreich). Leonardo expressed a fascination with the skeletal and muscular
structures of the human form, and eventually researched the internal organs as well. Da Vinci even
received permission by the Republic of Florence to dissect corpses for research purposes. He
performed dissections on men, women, and fetuses, racking up a total of about 30 dissections, only
ceasing his studies when the Pope forbade him from continuing. (Heydenreich).
In addition to dissecting cadavers to research the human form and its mechanics, Leonardo da Vinci
sketched his findings and published some of them. The most famous of these sketches is the Vitruvian
Man, which da Vinci drew to show that the human form is proportional in the context of circles and
squares.

Feminism And The Second Wave
Unlike the First and the Second waves the Third wave does not have a starting point or a particular
moment. The period from early 1990 s to present is often defined as the Third wave. This wave is
considered as the backlash of the movements and achievements made in the second wave. Many
issues like Webster decision in 1989, that made a way to create abortion laws and Planned Parenthood
Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey made a law that women should get counseling
before abortion led to the lesser chances of availability of abortion. Since then, even the education in
abortion was also seemed to gradually decrease. By 1990, there had been bombings on the abortion
clinics. Also in 1976 , Snuff, a porographic film pushed women to form a Women against Violence in
Pornograohy and Media as they realized that pornography degrades women of her standards and
ultimately leads to rape and violence. Many feminists believed that pornography violates women s
rights. Media played a major role in reflecting the views of women to be called feminists. This wave
particularly focuses on intersectionality. Women of color also expressed their thoughts of being
divided on the basis of color and what it means to them to be a feminist. Some of the papers like This
Bridge Called My Back, took birth which portraits the concerns of women of color and third world
women and are also significant to those involved in the third wave. Many feminist writers like Bell

Nepali Interlanguage Research Essays
Introduction
Nepali belongs to the Indo Iranian branch of the Indo European language family and is closely related
to Hindi. It began appearing (in an older form) in what is now Nepal around 300 C.E., when Hindu
Indo Aryans invaded the area from the south, displacing the Buddhist Kirantis. The now unified Nepal
is made up of over one hundred ethnic groups, each with its own language and culture. Nepali is the
national unifying language and is spoken by most Nepalis as a first or second language (O Rourke and

Nepali acts as a lingua franca in areas throughout the Himalayan region and has a long history of
being imposed through military conquest and sustained by political domination. Because of this, there
are a number of related dialects that are spoken apart from the standard form, though it is becoming
increasingly standardized (Riccardi 2003, 540). It is hard to decipher, given my limited

killing an innocent person. This is unlike the defense of an innocent, war or capital punishment. It can
also be open to the domino argument, which essentially argues if human beings allow one thing to be
declared legal or moral; this could cause a multitude of others bad things to follow. The church also
have the argument over religious practices and means that God gave us life as a gift, so why should
we have the right to take it away again? The religious aspect has many different reasons for being
against euthanasia but all religions stem from the belief of a higher power or being giving us the gift
of life. There are also other available options as in possibly of finding a cure or using hospice as an
alternative. So in result Immanuel Kant has his own ethical theory and arguments revolving around
the taking of one s life via euthanasia, therefore many arguments or debates can be given to defend the
right not to take another individuals life based on one s own ethical views.
A second ethical theory that can be raised is what stance does Utilitarianism takes on the debate of
euthanasia. A brief definition of Utilitarianism is

The Effects Of Food On The Food Industry
There are currently two types of food systems that exist in our food shed. TINA, which comes from
Maggie Thatcher, who said, There Is No Alternative to global economy T I N A (Shuman, 2002). And
LOIS, which stands for Local Ownership and Import Substitution (Shuman, 2002). TINA is the
system that has been used for the pasted 60 to 70 years, and throughout that time the way we produced
are food has become both productive and efficient; but it has also become destructive and unhealthy.
In A TINA based food economy, food is either mass produced through the process of industrial
farming or it is imported from other countries. These lead to adverse effects on the food, the
environment and the economy. However, in a LOIS based food economy, food is produced locally
through locally owned businesses, then the more you can minimize your vulnerability to nasty
surprises, the more you can maximize your economic multiplier, and the more you can maximize tax
proceeds to the public sector and the many good things that come from it. (Shuman, 2002). So in
simpler terms the more you produce locally, the better local economies will be and if local economies
have a large income then the nations income will increase by way of tax. Along with being good for
our economy, LOIS has little to no adverse effect on our environment or health. Compared to TINA,
LOIS looks like paradise, but just like every dream world, the LOIS system is currently an impossible
system to live by. As I said

Leadership Is Good And Bad Leadership
1. As per ref (a) the United States Coast Guard defines leadership as You influencing others to achieve
a goal. Ref (b) defines leadership as the ability to work through others to accomplish a task. My
definition of leadership is Things you do to get people to do things . My definition covers both good
and bad leadership. I feel that I have been influenced equally as much by bad leadership as good
leadership. I have observed as much of what not to do, as what to do. I occasionally find myself
compelled to do something that was in the what not to do column. I feel that if it was not for the bad
experiences I would have had to learn a lot of the what not to do lessons on my own.
For instance, I have worked for a number of Department Heads, but one in particular focused on
making changes immediately, whether needed or not; mostly not. Further, the way he approached the
change was, do this because I said so and I don t know how you all got along without me . Input was
not solicited and unsolicited input was not considered. Conversely, I have worked for Department
Heads that wouldn t make any unnecessary changes, and any changes that were made were
implemented only after discussion with the department or division supervisors. It was no coincidence
that the latter Department was more functional under this style of leadership. It is this style of
leadership that I attempt to emulate.
2. The three behaviors I have chosen to focus on improving are as follows

Theme Of Bye Bye Blackbird
Anita Desai, the grand dame of Indian English literature, was born in Mussorie on 24 June 1937, of a
Bengali father and a German mother. This identity of her plays a significant role in the portrayal of
characters in most of her novels especially Bye, Bye Blackbird as it presents the cultural crises
suffered by her main characters due to the East West encounters. This novel is considered to be most
intimately connected to her own experience as she herself has mentioned in an interview thus, ...of all
my novels Bye, Bye Blackbird is the most rooted and experienced and the least literary in derivation
(Dhawan 92).
This novel details the traumas of cross cultural maladjustments, the fear and the anger, the turmoil and

seems to be a seemingly contented individual. His attraction towards England is justified by his
critically sharp remarks on his observation of India that has been ever disappointing as he says:
As he is compelled to leave India for better life style and consistent economy, he has derived a gradual

George Orwell s 1984 And World War II
Broken Record World War II was the most disastrous war to date. When Hitler invaded other
territories, the leaders of those countries succumbed to Hitler s rising power. As a result, millions of
people died. In George Orwell s 1984, similar events occurred. In fact, 1984 and World War II
correlate well for the following reasons: countries switched sides, casualties were high, battles were
fought in a variety of areas, and concentration camps existed. During the World War II era, allegiances
fluctuated depending on needs and circumstances. Although countries such as England, the United
States, and Canada consistently fought with the Allies, the USSR initially signed a treaty with
Germany. Only once Hitler moved against the USSR did it join the Allies. This kind of change in
allegiance is similar to one that occurred in Orwell s 1984. Initially citizens of Oceania were told that
the enemy was Eastasia. In fact, Jones, Aaron, and Rutherford were accused of spying for Eastasia.
Later in the novel, Oceania and Eastasia joined forces against Eurasia. Oceania even rewrote all of the
newspapers, periodicals, textbooks, novels, and magazines so that history would show Eurasia as the
enemy and Eastasia the ally. 1984 relates well to the Soviet Union s position in World War II because
of the continuous change of sides. During World War II, many people died on both sides. The numbers
do not lie World War 2 was one of the largest conflicts in recorded history with no corner of

How To Stay Protected From Gold IRA Scams Essay
How to stay protected from Gold IRA Scams Steve Starr, a Tampa Bay based RV dealer was going
slow with his sales in 2008 when he was approached by a Spyker Telemarketer, a fraudulent investing
company. According to a story on CNBC, The company manipulated Starr to invest $25000 in
precious metals through a sales pitch. Spyker also validated Starrs investment to be profitable through
misleading statements. Instead of investing the investor s hard earned money, Spyker Telemarketer
pocketed it and was pleaded guilty of the scam in 2010. Without any access to the precious metals
market, Spyker faked contracting with a London based company that was nonexistent. Like Starr,

their portfolio is diverse with gold IRA but in reality, there is no evidence to support it. To investigate
such gold IRA scams, demand on legal documents from your custodian, ensuring an access to
organize, view, and recover your gold from the storage. Scam Example 1: Promoting Numismatic
Coins ( coins that rarely appreciate) In this gold IRA scam, dealers will convince the customers to
spend more money than they should be. Investors should be buying bullion coins, which are not as
profitable to sell compared to the numismatic coins. Thus, the pushy upselling techniques to buy
numismatic coins because they are rare or historic can have wrong motives. The fact that numismatic
coins are not permitted to be stored in the precious metal IRA and that they have an extremely low
liquidity will be conveniently hidden. This form of scam can also con the investors by giving a false
assurance that numismatic coins may not be seized by the government in any circumstances. To
protect yourself from such gold IRA scams, it is essential to understand that only definite bullion coins
are eligible for deposition. Analyzing the kind of coins before putting in money can save you from a
high risk or dead investment of numismatic coins. Scam Example 2: Superficial

POLYMER SCIENCE
[Document subtitle]
History of Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are one of the macronutrients used in our diet and also protein carbohydrate
interactions are an essential component of cellular structure and function. Vegetables, food grains,
fruits, many other dairy products naturally contain carbohydrates in various amounts. The basic
building block of carbohydrates is a simple combination of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen. Any compound
containing these three elements and having twice as many hydrogen atoms as carbon and oxygen are

be extracted. They are water based. Some examples of natural polymers are DNA cellulose and
proteins. There is also another type of the polymers called as synthetic polymers those which are
derived from the petroleum oils and they are made by the engineers. Some examples of the synthetic
polymers are nylon, Teflon, polyester.

On the Virtues of Private Property in Locke and Rousseau...
On the Virtues of Private Property in Locke and Rousseau
John Locke and Jean Jacques Rousseau, following their predecessor Thomas Hobbes, both attempt to
explain the development and dissolution of society and government. They begin, as Hobbes did, by
defining the state of nature a time before man found rational thought. In the Second Treatise[1] and
the Discourse on Inequality[2], Locke and Rousseau, respectively, put forward very interesting and
different accounts of the state of nature and the evolution of man, but the most astonishing difference
between the two is their conceptions of property. Both correctly recognize the origin of property to be
grounded in man s natural desire to improve his life, but they differ ... Show more content on

In that vein, there exists natural competition between men over food and other necessities, and
although the stronger may yield temporary power over the weaker in an individual situation, the
power is neither absolute nor permanent. All men have both a responsibility and a right to enforce the
law of nature, and therefore punish those who break it. That in the State of Nature, every one has the
Executive Power of the Law of Nature. (Locke, Second Treatise, II.13). Equality is maintained.
Having established his state of nature, Locke begins his description of the formation and transition to
society, and appropriately starts with a discussion of property. God, who hath given the World to Men
in common, hath also given them reason to make use of it to the best advantage of Life, and
convenience. (Locke, Second Treatise, V.26). Here, Locke does little more than apply natural law (self
preservation) to what he sees around him (land), but in doing so, makes a groundbreaking shift. He
reveals that, following from natural law, men have a right to use what they have around them to
further their own preservation and lives. In addition, man has an inherent, and obvious, possession of
himself and all that comes with it, including, and most importantly, labor. The Labour of his Body, and
the Work of his Hands, we may say, are properly his. (Locke, Second Treatise,

Fa Mu Lan No Name Woman The No Name Woman is a failure in Chinese society, but starkly contrasted by the success and fulfillment of traditional expectations demonstrated in the woman warrior, Fa Mu Lan. In the second section of Kingston s account, White Tiger, the author controversially develops her own retelling of this famous myth with herself as the legendary Chinese figure. Kingston initiates this section stating, when we Chinese girls listened to the adults talk story, we learned that we failed if we grew up to be but wives or slaves (Kingston 19). The words of her elders engrained in Kingston and her female peers their place of women, enslaved to their husbands and bound to housework. Yet Kingston does not accept this reality and instead plunges into a powerful tale of a female who not only overcomes gender roles but is the champion of the entire Chinese nation. Fa Mu Lan is a swordswoman, who utilizes her physical and magical training to cause social justice. Despite her occupations with valor and justice, however, Kingston s character also finds time to nurture a child and attend the domestic duties traditionally assigned to women, a challenge to ancient stereotypes and an affirmation of modern ideas of women balancing families with their careers. Similarly, the weapons Kingston yields are her words and the truth of her experience she artfully relates. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The story begins when Marlow, who works for a Belgian company, went on a journey to the heart of Africa as a steamship captain. Through his journey, he heard the name of Kurtz for the first time. Then the name is repeated many times, which made Marlow, who is our narrator in addition to another unknown narrator, interested to know about Kurtz. Or does it belong to the company? I think it belongs to the Congo and to the Congolese. Neither Kurtz nor the company has the right to claim that the ivory belongs to him. Finally, I believe that Conrad s Heart of Darkness embodies racism to Africa and for women, in which both are ignorant, silenced and nameless. Conrad s sympathy with Africans under the colonization of Belgium, does not give him the right to represent them and to celebrate English Imperialism. Albeit that people of Africa have different skin color or different shape from the European, they are still human beings and no one has the right to dehumanize them. Chinua Achebe in his essay An Image of Africa asks not to consider Conrad s Heart of Darkness as one of the best English novels, because the Africans suffer for a very long time by the dehumanization and by the European s representation of them. Chinua Achebe states that: I am talking about a book which parades in the most vulgar fashion prejudices and insults from which a section of mankind has suffered untold agonies and atrocities in the past and continues to do so in many ways and many places today. Investigating the effect of varying concentration on the reaction between magnesium ribbon and hydrochloric acid Aim It is to tell how the reaction between magnesium and hydrochloric acid will be effected if we change the concentration of hydrochloric acid. Introduction In the experiment the magnesium reacts with the hydrochloric acid to create magnesium chloride and hydrogen. The balanced formula for this is: Mg(s) + 2HCL(aq) MgCl2(aq) + H2(g) Magnesium + hydrochloric acid Magnesium Chloride + Hydrogen Magnesium will react with hydrochloric acid, because it is higher in the reactivity series than hydrogen. The magnesium displaces the hydrogen in the acid, so it forms magnesium chloride and hydrogen gas. Magnesium strip ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is to compare with the other diagrams to see what the change is and if the reaction rate has decreased or increased. The first one is to see what will happen if I change the temperature of the solution. As the temperature increases the speed and the power at which the acid particles hit each other increases, making the number of successful collisions with the magnesium strip increase. The second one is to show how increasing the mass of the magnesium strip can increase the rate of reaction slightly because of the increased surface area but it is only slightly increased on the sides and so this is proportional to the rate of reaction of the original diagram. It is only slower than the original reaction because there is more of it to react with and produces more of the products. Figure 3 shows the concentration of the hydrochloric acid increased so there are more particles to have more successful collisions. This is a faster reaction then the original reaction. The final reaction has the same amount of particles of acid and the magnesium, but the magnesium has been cut to increase the surface area. This makes the acid particles more likely to have more successful collisions each second than the original reaction.

The Modern American View Of Disability Gonzalez 1 Odette Gonzalez Professor Jason Tucker WRI 102 L Assignment 1 3 February 2015 The Modern American View of Disability In Rosmarie Garland Thomson: The politics of Staring , expresses how our society has changed over time. She views human s theories in four different visual rhetoric s which in this case I am going to call them speechmaking s: the wondrous, the realistic, the sentimental and the exotic. From these four figures of speech Garland has shown our inclination to see disabled people by the way they are discriminated by the rest of society. Garland makes references to this by showing pictures and examples that highlights how the modern American world views disability. The first figure of speech Garland discusses is the wondrous. She points out how the wondrous represent monsters, giants, meaning the good and evil, The wondrous viewpoint is defined by the association of the disabled with the normal, creating a disconnect in what the viewer sees as able. By visualizing a disabled person moving out physical trials ranging from menial tasks to physical feats of strength and will, the viewer creates a hollowness between the dexterity and capability to perform and the assumed lack of abilities of the subject. By saying The antecedents of the wondrous disabled figures are the monsters of antiquity, who inspired awe, foretold the future, or bore divine signs, and freaks, who were the celebrities in nineteenth century dime museums and sideshows she shows how ... Gladwell specifically mentions the 10,000 Hour Rule which states that anyone who wants to reach a definite level of mastery must perform 10,000 hours of practice until that level is reached. Some believe this rule to be invalid as those who are successful are born talented. • 20. Fake News As An Unreliable Form Of Satire The emergence and growing population of satire holds a strong position in the definition of modern journalism. The term satire has been replaced in the mainstream by the phrase fake news . This title implies an unreliable form of storytelling meant to translate to trickery, as this form of news can hold just as much power in today s media as legitimate news outlets. Regardless of it s popularity, the word fake should not be considered accurate, nor is it true to the real meaning. Satire typically aims to entertain an audience or grab its attention in a more interesting way, while news reports capture an event simply as it was. However, both forms of news may be guilty of carrying bias in their stories, one more obviously than the other. Fake news , still a form of journalism, carries a satirical form of political commentating that is still necessary in the world of reporting, just in a different format and done for a different purpose. The success and impact of satirical news stories rely on the consumer s ability to understand this form of irony. If this effect is achieved, a story can be just as beneficial as any other form of media. Popular satirical figure John Oliver agreed with this in reference to the use of irony in relation to the viewer, stating in an interview that his job required making jokes about the news and sometimes we need to research things deeply to understand them. So the article talks about different perspective on allowing people who are 16 17 years of age to vote. People who are under the age of 18 should not be able to vote because their unknowledgeable about how politics works, the age group has one of the lowest voting rate, and they don t have enough perspective. So people of the age of 16 or 17 they are not yet prepared to take on this responsibility and wouldn t be able to carry it out. A person who is in the age group of 16 to 17 would be enrolled in the 11th or 12th grade meaning they have not taken a government class or are currently enrolled in one. Students don t take a government class until their senior year of highschool. People need to learn how the government works before they are able to vote in order to make the best decision based off their political perspective. So say a person who falls into this group is voting and filling out their paperwork they re not going to understand most of the term or what choice is best for them. Voting is used to get statistic of what the nation wants in politics so why let someone who doesn t know anything about politics vote if they re ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

No street lights and a new moon, whose light couldn t penetrate the many trees, may have had something to do with that. From any window, the only thing Nate saw when he looked outside was a thick blanket of black and the occasional flare of a firefly. At nine p.m. he excused himself from his grandparents company as they watched Secrets of the Dead in their sitting room. He had some dead people s secrets to uncover himself. He went to the library and carried to his room the two boxes of books he and the twins had started on earlier. Some unseen force now directed more books to leave their box and form a new line, connecting to the first row at a thirty degree angle. The thumping noise softened as the stack rose higher into the air. Another pile of books soon stretched over Nate s head. The new stack was only a fourth the length of the first row but just as high. Eerily, Nate s bedroom door opened with the crack he had come to expect from the old hardware. But never would he have imagined the line of books that floated through the door like they were dangling from invisible strings. The set of encyclopedias he recognized from the library drifted over to the first stack and began a third line, angled at thirty degree again so that it made an upside down V with the other angled line. The new row also stopped at one fourth the length of the original row. More books crowned the stack until it reached as high as the first two rows. Nate sat unmoving, hardly breathing and hardly able to believe his eyes. But it seemed the last row of books put an end to the construction. No more books floated through the door or from boxes. An accurate statistical picture of a crime benefits the creation of a social policy. In, A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines, this is the primary conflict that plagues Jefferson s as well as Grant s everyday life. By pleading guilty to a murder that he did not commit, Jefferson has to choose to die just as he is, a hog in the white s eyes, or die a man. On the other hand, Grant, who is his teacher, is faced with being looked down upon by his community all because of his race and status. And I teach what the white folks around here tell me to teach reading, writing, and rithmetic. They never told me how to keep a black boy out of a liquor store (Gaines 13). Seen from this line, Grant does not want to help Jefferson, he thinks that Jefferson is not his problem and that it s not his fault that Jefferson is going to be executed. This accurately depicts Grant s selfishness, while in the end only helping him to please his aunt and Jefferson s godmother. This is a turning point in Grant s development as a character. This marks the point where he learns to accept and no longer wants to fear. And when he finally decides to take a chance, and not be afraid of the outcome. Grant has a swift change in thinking as the novel progresses. Seeing things differently and looking deeper into the little things in his life. The Problem Of Weight Watchers Introduction and Problem Statement Weight Watchers has faced a number of issues in the past several years, many of which are highlighted in the case study for this assignment. The company was able to reach a financial high point earlier this decade in 2011 when it recorded a record breaking 1.8 billion in revenues. However, the company s finances have slowly dwindled ever since then, culminating in losses for seven straight quarters and low stock prices at the beginning of 2015. The core of the problems it was facing were relatively straightforward. The weight loss industry was changing, and Weight Watchers was having difficult changing along with it. Specifically, the company had troubles modernizing its business model to account for the digital age as represented by increasing online options for weight loss. This fact was compounded by the reality that there was greater competition, including that from organizations whose primary business was to capitalize on digital technology to attract customers. Technologies such as mobile devices, mobile applications, cloud computing, and social media had made considerable strides in the way that people were monitoring and attempting to lose weight. Weight Watchers, however, had had only marginal success using these technologies, and faced the undesirable situation in which its methods were becoming rapidly outdated. An Analysis of Leonardo da Vinci and His Contributions to Western Civilization Leonardo da Vinci is one of the most famous artists to have ever lived, and his contributions to the development of western civilization are irrefutable. Born on April 15, 1452, near Florence, Italy, one would not have guessed that he was destined for a life of greatness. He was the illegitimate child of an up and coming notary and a peasant girl, and he spent most of his childhood with his doting father ( Da Vinci The Renaissance Man. ). At the age of 15, he became an apprentice in the workshop of Andrea del Verrochio, where his undeniable talent soon became apparent. The vertical lines connected at the vanishing point, in the center of the horizon, giving the illusion of distance and depth to the two dimensional canvas. Despite the relative simplicity of the method, the results were revolutionary at the time ( Linear Perspective ). Linear perspective was not the only tool that da Vinci employed to better his art; da Vinci s excellent understanding of human anatomy allowed for more life like and three dimensional figures in his paintings. It is believed that da Vinci s interest in human anatomy began during his apprenticeship under Verrochio (Heydenreich). Leonardo expressed a fascination with the skeletal and muscular structures of the human form, and eventually researched the internal organs as well. Da Vinci even received permission by the Republic of Florence to dissect corpses for research purposes. He performed dissections on men, women, and fetuses, racking up a total of about 30 dissections, only ceasing his studies when the Pope forbade him from continuing. (Heydenreich). In addition to dissecting cadavers to research the human form and its mechanics, Leonardo da Vinci sketched his findings and published some of them. The most famous of these sketches is the Vitruvian Man, which da Vinci drew to show that the human form is proportional in the context of circles and squares. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is unlike the defense of an innocent, war or capital punishment. It can also be open to the domino argument, which essentially argues if human beings allow one thing to be declared legal or moral; this could cause a multitude of others bad things to follow. The church also have the argument over religious practices and means that God gave us life as a gift, so why should we have the right to take it away again? TINA is the system that has been used for the pasted 60 to 70 years, and throughout that time the way we produced are food has become both productive and efficient; but it has also become destructive and unhealthy. In A TINA based food economy, food is either mass produced through the process of industrial farming or it is imported from other countries. These lead to adverse effects on the food, the environment and the economy. I occasionally find myself compelled to do something that was in the what not to do column. I feel that if it was not for the bad experiences I would have had to learn a lot of the what not to do lessons on my own. For instance, I have worked for a number of Department Heads, but one in particular focused on making changes immediately, whether needed or not; mostly not. Further, the way he approached the change was, do this because I said so and I don t know how you all got along without me . Input was not solicited and unsolicited input was not considered. Conversely, I have worked for Department Heads that wouldn t make any unnecessary changes, and any changes that were made were implemented only after discussion with the department or division supervisors. It was no coincidence that the latter Department was more functional under this style of leadership. It is this style of leadership that I attempt to emulate. 2. The three behaviors I have chosen to focus on improving are as follows ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. George Orwell s 1984 And World War II Broken Record World War II was the most disastrous war to date. When Hitler invaded other territories, the leaders of those countries succumbed to Hitler s rising power. As a result, millions of people died. In George Orwell s 1984, similar events occurred. In fact, 1984 and World War II correlate well for the following reasons: countries switched sides, casualties were high, battles were fought in a variety of areas, and concentration camps existed. During the World War II era, allegiances fluctuated depending on needs and circumstances. Although countries such as England, the United States, and Canada consistently fought with the Allies, the USSR initially signed a treaty with Germany. Only once Hitler moved against the USSR did it join the Allies. This kind of change in allegiance is similar to one that occurred in Orwell s 1984. Initially citizens of Oceania were told that the enemy was Eastasia. In fact, Jones, Aaron, and Rutherford were accused of spying for Eastasia. Later in the novel, Oceania and Eastasia joined forces against Eurasia. Oceania even rewrote all of the newspapers, periodicals, textbooks, novels, and magazines so that history would show Eurasia as the enemy and Eastasia the ally. 1984 relates well to the Soviet Union s position in World War II because of the continuous change of sides. During World War II, many people died on both sides. The numbers do not lie World War 2 was one of the largest conflicts in recorded history with no corner of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 48. On the Virtues of Private Property in Locke and Rousseau... On the Virtues of Private Property in Locke and Rousseau John Locke and Jean Jacques Rousseau, following their predecessor Thomas Hobbes, both attempt to explain the development and dissolution of society and government. They begin, as Hobbes did, by defining the state of nature a time before man found rational thought. In the Second Treatise[1] and the Discourse on Inequality[2], Locke and Rousseau, respectively, put forward very interesting and different accounts of the state of nature and the evolution of man, but the most astonishing difference between the two is their conceptions of property. Both correctly recognize the origin of property to be grounded in man s natural desire to improve his life, but they differ ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In that vein, there exists natural competition between men over food and other necessities, and although the stronger may yield temporary power over the weaker in an individual situation, the power is neither absolute nor permanent. All men have both a responsibility and a right to enforce the law of nature, and therefore punish those who break it. That in the State of Nature, every one has the Executive Power of the Law of Nature. (Locke, Second Treatise, II.13). Equality is maintained. Having established his state of nature, Locke begins his description of the formation and transition to society, and appropriately starts with a discussion of property. God, who hath given the World to Men in common, hath also given them reason to make use of it to the best advantage of Life, and convenience. (Locke, Second Treatise, V.26). Here, Locke does little more than apply natural law (self preservation) to what he sees around him (land), but in doing so, makes a groundbreaking shift. He reveals that, following from natural law, men have a right to use what they have around them to further their own preservation and lives. In addition, man has an inherent, and obvious, possession of himself and all that comes with it, including, and most importantly, labor. The Labour of his Body, and the Work of his Hands, we may say, are properly his. (Locke, Second Treatise, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
