With reference to the plays context, explore the techniques used by Shakespeare to establish the
mood and plot of Hamlet in Act One, Scene One?
In Act One, Scene One Hamlet , there are many different techniques used by Shakespeare to
establish the mood and plot of the ply. These techniques are used to effectively establish the setting
of the play, the weather, and the general mood of the play, which in the context of Hamletis a
tragedy.
The play is about Prince Hamlet, he has just returned from University after the death of his father
King Hamlet, only to discover that his mother Gertrude has already married days after his father s

A sceptic is one who refuses to accept statements, without rigorous proof or philosophies, theories
or religious views without substantial evidence, so Horatio can be referred to as a sceptic because
of his unbelief in ghosts.
The Tudors were very superstitious people who believed in spirits, ghosts and apparitions. This is
emphasized in Act One, Scene One where the sentries on watch are constantly talking about spirits,
apparitions and inhuman things. One example of this is Marcellus speech in which he says; What
has this thing appeared again?
This suggests that he is talking about something that is inhuman, and so this creates tension as the
audience wait to find out what he is actually talking about.
The Literacy context in Hamlet is that of a tragedy. Hamlet is one of Shakespeare s most
famous revenge tragedy. We see the genre of tragedy in Act One, Scene One where Horatio talks
of King Fortinbras of Norway s death at the hand of King Hamlet of Denmark, and Prince
Fortinbras subsequent desire for revenge. Horatio talks of young Prince Fortinbras saying: Now
sir, young Fortinbras, of unimproved mettle hot and full, Hath in the skirts of Norway here and
there Sharked up a list of lawless resolutes . He then goes on to say of Prince Fortinbras quest:
But to recover of us by strong hand and terms compulsatory those lands so by his father lost .
This part of the text is saying that Prince Fortinbras has gathered up an army, and is

Agricultural Export Commodities ( Stokes Howden 2010 )
The wine industry in Australia is one of the most highly valued agricultural export commodities
(Stokes Howden 2010). Viticulture is an agricultural sector that is closely associated with climate
as the production of unique wine is reliant upon specific combinations of climate, soils and
landscape to create particular styles (Stokes Howden 2010; Webb et al. 2008). Changes in climate
have potential to adversely affect the quality of winegrape production. Thus, climate change is set
to become a major challenge for the wineindustry, and contest the adaptive capability of the
industry. As a result of the increasing awareness of the potential consequences of significant climate
variability, it is essential that the industry explores possible strategies to enable adaptation to change.
The Margaret River wine region
The Margaret River wine region of Western Australia is highly regarded as a premium wine region
in Australia (Jones et al. 2010). The production of high quality wines, however, means that the
region has potential to suffer from modifications in quality by the slightest climatic changes. Thus,
climate change has potential to adversely impact the viticultural industry. At present, the Margaret
River wine region experiences a Mediterranean style climate, with factors of temperature, soil
quality and humidity all well suited to high quality wine production. The economic impact of the
Margaret River wine industry is approximately an annual $250 million. Climate

Collective Bargaining Essay
1. Does the presence of unions increase the likelihood that management will be fairer and more
consistent with employers? Management is on the side of the employers, since many of those
positions are unable to in the union (Huston, 2010, p. 294). If the manager holds a full time
supervisor position, then they aren t eligible to join the union, which in turn may upset them when
the union renegotiates their terms, and the nurses get better benefits. An example of this is that a
floor supervisor can actually make less money than that of the floor nurse, and they don t get any
overtime pay (S. Smothers, personal communication, Fall, 2009). There are two types of relations
that unions can have with management; acceptance, and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
3. Can the need for unionization be eliminated simply by management being more attentive to
worker needs and being willing to provide employees reasonable working conditions and a voice in
decision making?
I believe that when management is threatened by a union coming, they are desperate at that
moment and would try anything to avoid it from happening. Therefore they are willing to try to
negotiate with nurses to help make them feel as though they are empowered (Huston, 2010, p.
293). However, this may only be a momentarily gain for the nurse, because if they don t unionize
management will go back to their old practices. An article called The impact of collective
bargaining published by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees
(AFSCME) states decision making authority with staff nurses without a union is exceedingly rare
(2011).
Unions help to increase wages, fringe benefits, better pension plans, safety, help keep RNs and
displace other staff during layoff (if at all possible), restrict unsafe floating, and ban mandatory
overtime and shift rotation (Huston, 2010, p. 291 292, and (National Nurses United, 2010).
Without a union many of these issues would still be in play today. Plus a union will go to bat for
them when needed, which was the case in a Virginia Mason Hospital when they tried to mandate
that all nursing staff had to get immunized (Rosenbaum, 2008).

The Small Arms Industry ( 3484 )
Industry Overview The Small Arms Industry (3484) is a subgroup of the Fabricated Metal
Products Industry. The Small Arms Industry primarily engages in manufacturing small firearms
(pistols, revolvers, rifles, shotguns and submachine guns) having a bore 30 mm or less, and
also the parts for small firearms. Historically the small arms industry has been cyclical and
subject to many pressures, including the general state of the economy, worldwide military
conflicts, and political opinions concerning private ownership of firearms. For example, gun
sales rose in the days following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and also rose in the
days following the recent terrorist attacks by ISIS all over the world. The border conflicts, war
like situations and the threats caused by rising terrorism are expected to boost the small arms
market for armed forces, across the world. With the use of small arms for self defense, sport
shooting, hunting, climate pollution monitoring, border security operations, and military, the
demand for small arms is expected to drive this market. The small arms industry has seen a
tremendous increase in revenue of 7% per year. According to the US Census Bureau, in 2002 the
small arms industry had a revenue of $1.12 billion and increased to $3.67 billion in 2012. Which
once again this spike in revenue can be attributed to the threat of terrorist and also the perceived
threat of the government attempt to reduce and possibly eliminate the right to bear

Bilateral Review System Analysis
Bilateral review systems are ultimately unreliable. Many customers are forced to say positive, but
not necessarily true, traits about themselves or hotels and are usually rated by companies unfairly.
For Uber, customers are rated on their behavior, but there are no real standards suggesting what is
meant by good, bad, or mediocre behavior. It is purely up to the designation of the driver, which
can be more opinionated than factual. Thus, it is not a surprise when a passenger feels perplexed
to find out his or her passenger score has been lowered even if the passenger did everything in his
or her power to leave a lasting impression on the driver.
This then puts an overwhelming amount of pressure people to write a review about themselves,
which

The Impact of Offshoring on the U.S. Economy
Off shoring is the establishment of business operations outside national boundaries. The process of
moving business outside these boundaries is to garner an advantage either through tax breaks,
lower wages, lower transportation cost and/or relaxed regulations ( Offshore definition, 2014).
Many firms either branch out as a horizontal multinational or vertical multinational. Horizontal
multinational s produce the same good or services as abroad. This foreign direct investment (FDI)
is done to strategically place production closer to the target market. Doing this provides advantages
surrounding transportation cost while enhancing learning associated with local needs. A vertical

Multinational Corporations . The analysis will evaluate factors motivating firms to move off shore
and the associated impact on the U.S. work force. The three measures that will be discussed are 1)
value added (i.e. the measure of capital and labor gain at a given production stage), 2) capital
expenditures (i.e. land, buildings and equipment), and 3) employment (i.e. number of jobs lost
/created). The paper will conclude with a discussion of outcomes between 1977 2003 using data
supplied by the Bureau of Economic Analysis.
Assessment
Economic integration aims to reduce cost and increase value for both producers and consumers.
This is accomplished by increased international trade for goods and services. Economic
integration has expanded markets by which firms can play . Firms are more self serving, their
motive is to reduce cost and increase profits. To do this firms have begun to off shore their
operations. Off shoring allows a firm to lower cost and establish a presence closer to target markets.
This process has become easier with technology advances. For example, information can be shared
and transactions made with the click of a button. International borders are easy transcended with
expansive transportation networks. This facilitates product movement and placement of resources,
supporting just in time (JIT) manufacturing. Critics of this believe overall economic well being is
affected when companies off shore, since jobs and

Essay Functions of the Chorus in Shakespeare s Henry V
Functions of the Chorus in Shakespeare s Henry V In Shakespeare s Henry V, the chorus plays a
prominent role. There are few other plays written by Shakespeare that include a chorus, however
in no other play does the chorus have such an important role. The principal purpose of the chorus
is that of story telling. The chorus acts as a guide for the audience, narrating parts that wouldn t fit
into the action of the play. For example in the Act II Chorus, we are told about treason: The sum is
paid, the traitors are agreed, the king is now set from London, and the scene is now transported,
gentles, to Southampton. As we can see, the chorus reviews what has happened in previous scenes

Appealing to a muse, a goddess patron of the arts, tells us that is going to be a really special play.
The audience react to this, getting excited as they find they are going to watch such a wonderful
play. The prologue raises our expectation of Henry, as we know previously he had been a bit of a
rebel. It now calls him the Warlike Harry ; it says he is like Mars, the god of war. Throughout the
play, the audience are reminded how great Henry is. In Act V s chorus, Henry is compared to
Caesar , a great roman emperor and by the epilogue Henry is The star of England . However,
Henry also has a less attractive side, which is occasionally portrayed in the scenes between the
choruses. This may seem inconsistent. Henry can be cunning and manipulative. When he wishes
to fight the French, he says to the Archbishop of Canterbury that he wants his blessing, because
then God will be on his side. If Canterbury agrees, then effectively anything bad that happens to
Henry and his army thereafter is his fault. May I with right of conscience make this claim? Henry
asks the Archbishop of Canterbury, who replies The sin upon my head, dread sovereign . The
audience will react to this, they begin to realise that Henry is a clever man. He can manipulate
people so it

What Makes Good People Do Bad Things By Susan Dittman
Describing someone with the word evil refers to them committing an action that is considered
immoral and malicious. Evil people pull off these type acts: robbing a bank, violent killings of
living creatures, and even mental abuse through verbal or physical actions. Many people always
wonder, what was the initial purpose of committing such inhumane actions? They may say hatred,
anger, and revenge are some of the causes of evil. Although these traits do cause the idea of evil in
an individual, the inspiration for iniquitous intents is in fact sprouted through the unideal human
traits of apathy and ego.
One of the human traits that cause evil is apathy; for it makes people not consider the other
individuals feelings and security. Every ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another example is in fact in our society. In modern society, people tend to act as bystanders,
people who don t pay attention to their surroundings. Take into the account of witnessing the
scenarios of someone being bullied and a homeless man begging for money. In the bullying
scenario, most of the time, the people acting like bystanders do nothing about the situation at
hand. Typically, the right idea is to address the stakes at hand, whether calling for help or even
putting oneself out there. Unfortunately, our society ignores the fact of another human is being
verbally or physically abused. We tend to be in our own little worlds when we encounter an
event such as bullying due to the fact we feel as if there isn t a way we can help. Instead of
helping a fellow peer with a challenge, we re afraid to put ourselves out there. We refuse because
we mainly care for our well being or we simply don t believe we have what it takes to fix the
situation; this leads to the feeling of apathy. The homeless person scenario is no different. When a
homeless person begs for money, the common courtesy is to of course contribute any amount of
money towards the homeless man; however, this concept

Islamic World View Beyond Islamic Development Strategy Essay
Islamic World View Beyond Islamic Development Strategy, Is It There?
Introduction
Allan Bullock and S.Trombley (1999) refer worldview to a general conception of the nature of
the world, particularly as containing or implying a system of value principles. What constructs
such a system of value principles may vary depending on each fundamental belief. It becomes
essential to know the various type of worldview as it helps us to comprehensively understand our
own worldview and gain insight from others. Just as a mirror allows us to see our own face, so an
alternative coherent worldview illuminates and clarifies our own worldview (Zaman, 2008).
Differences in worldview are the essential foundation of differences in any system, including
economic system. As Chapra (1992) said that worldview performs the same function for an
economic system as the foundation does for a building: even though the supporting foundation is
invariably invisible and unmentioned, it continues to play a determining role. In general, there are
three major economic systems which based on completely distinct worldviews: capitalism,
socialism, and Islamic economic system.
Capitalism and socialism as the prevailing systems have been proven to be unsuccessful in solving
economic problems comprehensively. One of the failure evidence, global financial crisis in 2008,
which demonstrated reckless financing instrument and moral deficiency, provides a wider
opportunity for Islamic moral economy to be perceived

Generally Accepted Auditing Standards Generally Accepted Auditing Standards or GAAS is a set
of systematic guidelines used by auditors when conducting audits on companies finances, ensuring
the accuracy, consistency and verifiability of auditors actions and reports (Lexico Publishing
Group, 2008). The following paper will explain the elements of GAAS and how GAAS is applied
to audits. GAAS has three elements that must be used during every audit. They are general
standards, standards of field work, and standards of reporting. Each of the three standards has their
own set of rules that must be complied with during every audit. ... Show more content on

There are three main types of audits, financial, operational, and compliance. First a financial
statement audit involves obtaining and evaluating evidence about an entity s presentation of its
financial position, results of operations, and cash flows for the purpose of expressing an opinion
on whether they are presented fairly in conformity with established criteria (Boynton Johnson,
2006). Next an operational audit involves obtaining and evaluating evidence about the efficiency
and effectiveness of an entity s operating activities in relation to specified objectives (Boynton
Johnson, 2006). Last a compliance audit involves obtaining and evaluating evidence to determine
whether certain financial or operating activities of an entity conform to specified conditions, rules,
or regulations (Boynton Johnson, 2006). The standards of GAAS apply to all three types of
audits in more ways than one. First the general standards must all be adhered before any auditor
can perform an audit in any entity. The standards of field work also must be followed while in the
entity performing the audit. When reporting the results of the audit the standards of reporting must
be followed. The Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2002 changed the world of auditing in many ways. The act
put provisions into place that an auditor can no longer perform certain services. It also placed
increased penalties on managers of public companies who try to report incorrect data

Respect, especially in the Army is a very important value to live by. It is much more than just
talking kindly and listening to someone. It is the process of taking into consideration someone s

showing someone that you value their time; that you care what they have to say. Showing someone

Do what they ask and do it well. Treat them kindly and use proper language. You still must take
into consideration the person s emotions, needs, preferences, thoughts, and ideas. Do what they
say and do it quickly. Do not ask questions, do not smart off, and do not do anything to jeopardize
your own self in regards to the situation. It is important to complete the job task and complete it
well the first time. Show the person you respect them. Get it done, and get it down the right way,
the first time. This is how you show respect. This is how you earn respect. Respect is very
important both in the military and in the civilian world. In most cases, people can easily tell
when someone respects them or not. Once they feel that they are being respected, they can
instill more trust into a person, respect them back, and take what the person says to heart. They
can put faith into that person. Once we earn someone s respect, it is much easier to gain his or
her cooperation. It is much easier to have them support us and take our sides. We don t have to
put as much effort in to getting them to listen to an order or doing what they are told. Respect
must be EARNED. You must provide someone with your respect before they show you the same
respect. This is what I mean by earning it. I do not believe that respect can be demanded or
forced. Demanding someone s respect will most likely lead to some type of conflict. Respect

Westus IV Ephanes Contributions
In 175 BC, Antiochus IV Epiphanes became King of the Seleucids and nominated Jason, brother of

deaths in the dispute between Jason, Menelaus, and Onias, Jason remained the High Priest, while
his brother, Onias was killed. Antiochus then began attempt to Hellenize the Jews and pillaged their

Additionally, he even executed those preforming traditional circumcisions. This was elevated by the
Abomination of Desolation when the placement of a statue of Zeus in the second temple occurred.

Bribery
Research Methodology
Title
A study of the effect of bribery and corruption with lack of censorship in the governmental
institution
There are various reasons why corruption takes place and takes hold. Sometimes it is due to the
fact that officials are simply not paid very much and so they need to supplement their salaries
with money from bribes. Sometimes the bureaucratic system is set up in such a way that officials
simply refuse to carry out their duties unless they are encouraged by being offered bribes. In
other cases it is actually part of the tradition and culture of a country to give and receive gifts in
order to get anything done. In some cases companies from less corrupt countries allegedly engage
in bribery in order ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mostly, corruption occurs in environments where it is tolerated and where the temptation is too
strong to resist. In the following paragraph there are some examples of how bribes take place in
each and every one of them. The enormous scale of grand corruption in Peru was revealed in
2000 by discoveries leading to the resignation and self exile of the president, Alberto Fujimori.
Video taped evidence showed that Vladimir Montesano s, Fujimori s spy chief, had repeatedly
bribed congressmen to defect to Fujimori s party to ensure its majority in congress. In addition,
large bribes had enabled Montesano s to control most of the media and influence the judiciary.
However, Fujimori is credited with having reduced petty corruption. His administration pursued
policies reducing the role of government, which he justified not only on efficiency grounds, but on
the grounds that reducing the role of government would reduce opportunities for corruption. He
attempted to reduce corruption in the police and municipal governments, in the latter case by
establishing a supervisory agency to field citizen complaints. However, his reforms of the
judiciary are thought to have made it more corrupt. Despite some progress, however, several
institutions with which ordinary people have much contact were judged to be corrupt by
Transparency International in a November 2001 report. ast week did not begin well for Siemens

In Guy de Maupassant s The Necklace, Mathilde is an unhappy French woman who has an apparent
desire to live a more luxurious life. Because Mathilde is unhappy in her marriage, she is not shy to
let her husband know that he is not enough to keep her happy. Throughout Maupassant s story, we
can see the transformation of Mathilde s selfishness, unhappiness, and materialistic nature into a
newly found humbleness after an incident that causes her to learn that there is more to life than
material things. Throughout the first few paragraphs, Mathilde is portrayed as being obsessed with
material wealth, and as being selfish. We can see that Mathilde is materialistic by the words that

And she loved nothing but that; she felt made for that. She would have liked to please, to be

greater than her desire to serve as a good wife to her husband. Another time we see her love for
material items is when Mathilde says to her husband, It annoys me not to have a single jewel,
not a single stone, nothing to put on. I shall look like distress. I should almost rather not go at all

It is apparent that Mathilde is not happy where she is and is not happy with her husband.
Mathilde is depicted by Maupassant as feeling unhappy as though she had really fallen from her
proper station (68). Mathilde s frequent remarks about her husband also show the reader that she
is not happy. Another time the reader can see that Mathilde is unhappy where she is socially is
when Maupassant writes, She suffered ceaselessly, feeling herself born for all the delicacies and

Educational needs change overtime to fit the ever evolving world and the knowledge required to

Cultural Icon Of Shamrock
Weekly Assignment
Cultural Icon: Shamrock
The Shamrock is recognized around the world today as a cultural icon of the Irish. In the past it
was used as a symbol of Ireland s resistance to invasion and foreign control, but today it represents
good luck and has been widely embraced as major national symbol of Ireland and the Irish Culture.
While trying to convert the Irish into Christians, St. Patrick used the shamrock in the 5th century
as a tool to explain the holy trinity with each leaf representing the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
The three leaves of a shamrock are also said to stand for faith, hope, and love, while a fourth leaf
represents luck. The four leafed clover, also known as the lucky clover is a special type of the three

Normality In Frankenstein
The characterisation of monsters is a significant image of the gothic genre. Whether their actions
are a physical manifestation, as in the case of the monsters in Frankenstein, The Island of Doctor
Moreau and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, or a more supernatural being, as demonstrated in The Castle of
Otranto or The Little Stranger, their purpose serves to provide anxiety tension and violence to the
narrative. Their unrelenting pursuit of the protagonist inspires the narrative to its absolute
conclusion, where the monster is defeated, often in an explicit and gory manner, and for the most
part with the protagonist experiencing a sense of jubilant deliverance and moral satisfaction. David
Punter and Glennis Byron define this purpose as; Through difference,... Show more content on

This description likens his efforts to those of an expectant mother, later when he actually creates
life, his actions are similarly described as; an anxiety that almost amounted to agony. Whilst this
anticipation would seem to mirror his earlier experience, his reaction to the first breath of his
creation is the complete opposite; How can I describe my emotions at this catastrophe. Instead of
rapturous delight, Victor is filled with a sense of breathless horror and disgust. In Congruence with
Punter s assessment of the nature of the gothic genre, this scene serves to highlight the argument
raised by Erasmus Darwin and other enlightenment thinkers, on the subject of reproduction. Their
research suggested, that with the reproduction of plants, the male plant role was of infinitely more
importance than the role of the female plant, with the female role being merely to provide
nourishment and oxygenation. Subsequently, Darwin ascribed all monstrous births to women,

Planet Of Slums By Mike Davis Essay
Mike Davis, author of Planet of Slums, predicts the direction in which the world s cities are
headed, and how the changes in living conditions are only going to deteriorate if certain trends
continue. The title of his book explains Davis s vision for the future of cities as he feels there is
enough evidence pointing towards an exponential rise in slum populations across the world s
largest cities. Additionally, he expresses his opinion on many issues regarding the rapid rise in
developing cities slum populations, although he offers very one sided arguments geared towards
those who feel the current system is causing more problems rather than improving current
conditions. This causes Davis to overlook the problems of slums as resolvable through different
modes of assistance such as international aid programs. Instead, he views aid programs as the root
cause of imbalance created during industrialization. Throughout the book, Davis presents
information that confirms his preconceptions towards the slums. Therefore, all the evidence that is
presented by him portrays confirmation bias as Davis fails to mention anything about the resolution
of the problem of the growing number of slums and instead sees this problem as unavoidable.
Particularly, Davis writing, although intended for the general population, is more geared towards
critics who have similar ideas. Instead of providing the means through which the economy could
be improved and the problem of slums could be resolved, it is

Observation Of CM Allen s Afterschool
My group had to opportunity to observe CM Allen s afterschool program first and meet the kids

Inductive Reasoning In The Enlightenment
The Enlightenment was a philosophical time period that was placed in the eighteenth century. It
was also known as the Age of Reason . Most thinkers argued that the things of nature could be
understood by using human reason. This time period is when people began to question certain
authorities. People began to notice that the sake of humanity could be fixed or saved by using
reason to think and improve society. Although they sometimes differed in favoring inductive or
deductive reasoning, Enlightenment thinkers often worked towards the same general goal which
was changing society for the better by using science, logic, and education.
Most Enlightenment thinkers either used inductive reasoning or deductive reasoning. Inductive
reasoning or thinking means that a specific thing is used to create a broader theory. Deductive
reasoning is where one would take a general idea and narrow it down towards a specific reason or
idea. Some people that used these kinds of reasoning were Immanuel Kant, John Locke, James
Cook, Jean Jacques Rousseau, and RenГ© Descartes. Immanuel Kant was one of the many
philosophers that used inductive reasoning approach.
According to Immanuel Kant, Enlightenment was a man s growth from his own self imposed
immaturity. He thought the motto of the Enlightenment was along the lines of one should not be
afraid to use their own knowledge to understand things. He also thought that laziness and cowardice
were two reasons why men acted or performed the way they

Importance Of Art And Education
Art is a way for me to visualise my personal ideas and express myself in a way for others to
interpret. I enjoy being able to create something from an idea, as well as exploring my
individuality and by choosing this course I will be able to refine my skills to specialise in the
areas I really enjoy. So why fine art and education together? I believe that using art within a
classroom as a teaching method is a great way to actively involve pupils, and get everybody
engaged with learning. I also see it as a way of inspiring children to do their best, and being able
to see a child overcome struggles within their education and within their personal life will be
very rewarding. I have partaken in numerous activities which demonstrate my dedication to my
subject areas, as well as ways of gaining experience and utilising my skills. For example, I have
volunteered for the NEC Skills Show with my college where I exhibited work and taught
members of the public various ways of using make up to create wounds. I have also visited
primary schools to teach them art skills and to help with painting murals of cartoon characters in
their playground. Outside of college I have tutored family friends for homework and grammar

The Blind Side Vs. Great Expectations
Classic Novels: The Blind Side vs. Great Expectations
Classic novels are almost abundant in this day and age. One can find them almost anywhere,
and the meanings can impact life in a major way. Although many books hold the honor of being
considered a classic, some stories are on the outskirts, hoping to have the chance to join the
ranks. Stories like these hope to one day join this honorable list. The Blind Side by Michael
Lewis is one of those stories. The characters are relatable, the setting sets the tone of the story, the
plot is driven hard throughout the story, and the overall themes of the story are universal. The
Blind Side truly is an all time classic. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, three main points
categorize a classic. The story must be considered the best of its kind. In other words, it has to be
popular among its literary genre for an extended period, such as Great Expectations or A Tale of
Two Cities in the autobiographical fiction genre. It has to be an example of excellence. That
means it has to be shown to make a change in the lives of people, such as Grapes of Wrath
showing people they can overcome any obstacle thrown in their way. The story can not only be
famous for a year to be considered a classic. It has to be remembered for years and years to come,
such as Old Yeller or The Great Gatsby. In the non fiction book The Blind Side, a young man,
Michael Oher, is living in the poor suburbs of Memphis, Tennessee, in

Comparison Of Ethos And Pathos In Advertising
In today s age, advertisements are found in almost every situation. These advertisements are found
in a multitude of different places, including places such as billboards, newspapers, and on the
television. Advertisements are most successful if they incorporate ethos, pathos, and logos into the
message they are trying to present. Ethos is the credibility of an advertisement, pathosis the
emotional appealof an advertisement, and logos is the logic found in the advertisement. This paper
will show the similarities and differences in pathos, logos, and ethos found in two separate
Budweiser advertisements.
Ethos, pathos, and logos are all rhetorical appeals, meaning that they are used to assist the speaker
or writer in harnessing rhetoric. Clark (2016) considers rhetoric as a tool meant for persuasion as
well as for creating effective arguments. Rhetoric became extremely popular during the golden age
of Greece, and most elite young men in Greek city states such as Athens were trained to utilize
rhetoric to their fullest abilities (Clark, 2016). Plato, an ancient Greek philosopher, believed that
rhetoricians those who used rhetoric to influence and sway opinions used rhetoric irresponsibly
(Clark, 2016). Rhetoric certainly did not die out with the passing of time and is still found in today
s modern era.
Of these three appeals, pathos is the most prevalent in both advertisements. An inherent form of
pathos in the Budweiser commercial was the relationship between a puppy and

Outsourcing was not the only way low wage foreign workers affected the work force in the
1800s. There were also millions of immigrants added to the workforce. When that many new
workers were added to the labor force, of course it was not without effect on industrial wages they
were driven down.
Both outsourcing and immigration affected the economy in more ways than just the cost of labor.
Products were manufactured at a lower cost and thus sold for a lower price. Lower manufacturing
costs benefited the companies, and the lower prices of the goods produced benefited consumers.

Interpreting The Matrix through Descartes’s Philosophy Essay
Many ancient philosophers, including Plato, explored metaphysics in relation to reality before
Descartes s in depth questioning of the subject. However, Descartes s views on mind/body
dualism differ greatly from Plato s. As Marleen Rozemond (author of Descartes s Dualism) points
out, Plato believes that the body is simply a vessel for the soul to use, while Descartes provides
proof that the body and soul are interconnected (172). One does not simply use the other; though
they are separate, the mindaffects the body and the body affects the mind. Cartesian dualism tells
us that although the whole mind seems to be united to the whole body, I recognize that if a foot or
arm or any other part of the body is cut off, nothing has thereby been... Show more content on

Descartes states that:
Once the foundations of a building are undermined, anything built on them collapses of its own
accord; so I will go straight for the basic principles on which all my former beliefs rested.
Whatever I have up till now accepted as most true I have acquired either from the senses or
through the senses. But from time to time I have found that the senses deceive, and it is prudent
never to trust completely those who have deceived us even once. (384)
Through questioning the knowledge he had always believed to be true, Descartes comes to realize
that many of his basic beliefs were founded on sensual knowledge. This leads him to question his
very existence, and eventually to search for unconditional proof of his existence
Christopher Falzon, philosophy lecturer and author of Philosophy Goes to the Movies and
Philosophy and The Matrix, points out that The Matrix employs Cartesian style skepticism in its
attempt to inundate the viewer in this cyber world ( Philosophy and the Matrix 99). This is seen
in Neo s choice between the red pill and blue pill in The Matrix, which can be likened to Descartes
s employment of the acid test. Neo, a computer hacker, is told that a man named Morpheus can tell
him the meaning of the Matrix, a term that Neo has encountered several times. Upon meeting
Morpheus, Neo is given a choice: he can take a blue pill which will make him forget about his

Poetry during the Roman empire played a prevalent role in society along with what was being

society and the people played, in what type of poetry, language, and tone were used. Latin poetry,
through symbolism and humanity s ideology, represents the evolution of the Roman era and

The Importance Of A Happy Life
Would you be willing to let go of your deepest darkest fears to pursue the honorable? According
to Seneca, For what prevents us from saying that the happy life is to have a mind that is free,
lofty, fearless and steadfast a mind that is placed beyond the reach of fear, beyond the reach of
desire, that counts virtue the only good, baseness the only evil, and all else but a worthless mass of
things, which come and go without increasing or diminishing the highest good, and neither subtract
any part from the happy life nor add any part to it?
A man thus grounded must, whether he wills or not, necessarily be attended by constant
cheerfulness and a joy that is deep and issues from deep within, since he finds delight in his own
resources, and desires no joys greater than his inner joys. Seneca s statement shows the rejection of
all base pleasures and desires to be the foundation for good stoic philosophy. Stoicism, a Hellenistic
philosophical school started by Zeno of Citium in the early 3rd century B.C, flourished in Ancient
Rome during the time of Cicero and Caesar. The Stoics stressed personal freedom, virtue, natural
law, reason, and self control. Stoic philosophers such as Marcus Aureliusand Seneca claimed a life
of discipline and moderation in which one would give up their pleasures and ignore pain. In

Fascism And Nazism Similarities
Fascism and Nazism. Both once prominent forms of government during the 20th century, and now
the number of countries that use either one of these governments is diminishing. Fascism and
Nazism both emerged because of a general crisis of the European political system during the late
19th century to the end of World War 1. Fascism
was motivated by the fears of of social as well as
political disintegration, and of political revolution on the part of both ruling of the lower and
middle classes (Encylopedia.com Editors, 2017). Europe would later see many Nazi and Fascists
movements during the time period between World War 1 and World War 2; however, in only Italy
and Germany did these forms of government manage to come to power and develop into their
respective regimes (Encylopedia.com Editors, 2017). While these two once prominent governments
share some similarities, they also share many differences.
Fascism first exploded onto the political scene during the 1919 as the first mass movement of of
the middle class citizens in both Italy as well as Germany. In this political party, important sections
of the economic and political establishments sought out to attempt to preserve the status quo in the

How I Started Learning Piano
I started learning piano when I was six years old. Even though I had to practice several hours a
day instead of playing outside, I enjoyed mastering a new piece and performing in front of an
audience. Unfortunately, my hands could not reach a full octave of keys. This made it impossible
to play some of the more complex pieces and I eventually stopped playing once I moved to the
US. During my freshman year of high school, a friend convinced me to try playing again on the
pianolocated in an isolated hallway of our school. Despite not touching a piano in years, once I
placed my hands on the keys, my muscle memory was sufficient to playthe first half of Fur Elise .
When she then gave me a piece of music, I was surprised to see that I had not forgotten how to
sight read, which was my least favorite part of piano lessons when I was younger. Hesitantly, I
was able to follow the sheet music and start playing one hand at the time. As I practiced over the
next few days, I could once again play most of the pieces I once mastered. Just for fun, I even
borrowed some of the pieces my friend was practicing. My high school has a yearly competition
between the grades call SING! Each grade would create the sets and costumes to perform a one
hour play, including acting, singing, and dancing. My friend was to play the piano as part of the
orchestra, and the pieces I have been learningwere part of the show. When she broke her wrist a
mere half hour before the show, she recommended that I

in pay rates between jobs. Worker dissatisfaction may arise when internal equity principles aren t
met.Internal equity studies analyze the nature of a particular position including: 1.Skill2.Effort and

Human Growth Hormone Essay
Human Growth Hormone
Human growth hormone, a substance produced in the human body, is now being sold over the
Internet. Companies are marketing the product as an anti aging product. At the web site, http:/
/www.awakenhgh.com, the company claims that there is a possibility that one can stop the aging
process. On the home page, they claim that the product can reduce fat and cellulite, increase
energy and muscle tone, elevate mood, improve sexual performance and sleep, remove wrinkles,
balance cholesterol, re grow and re color hair, and more. The product is a dietary oral spray that they
claim contains a product that is identical to the growth hormone manufactured in the human body
and is designed for oral consumption. They also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, they claim that their product will result in the elimination of panic attacks, a reversal
of the aging process, and rapid healing of wounds and broken bones. The presentation of scientific
information before the sales pitch seemingly increases the credibility of the company with the
customer. They quote Dr. William Regelson, who uses hormone therapy in his work, as saying, it
has some amazing powers, but its benefits must be carefully weighed against its costs and potential
side effects. He also states that a product may eventually be available that provides all the benefits,
but has no side effects, which is now available through Health and Energy. They also have a
disclaimer that the FDA does not approve the information they provide about the product.
These web sites are all created by companies trying to sell something. They are not going to
provide any medical research that does not support their product claims to sell their product. This
is why it is important to review scientific data when thinking about starting a new, possibly
controversial, dietary supplement. Researchers and doctors are much more biased when examining
a product than a group that has a stake in the possible positive or negative results. The purpose of
research is to inform the public, not sell

My Parents At My Childhood Home
When living with both my parents at my childhood home, I attended Abraham Lincoln Washington
Elementary until the fourth grade. I stared going to pre school when I was 3 years old and then
transitioned into Kindergarten, where I attended Abraham Lincoln. The school included grade
levels from Kindergarten to eight grade. I loved going to schooland would have my mother prepare
my lunch box early in the morning before walking me to school. We only lived three blocks
from school, which was very convenient for my mother and baby sister. My mother always
walked me to class, but my father would literally walk me to the corner of the street, which was
two houses away from where we lived and would watch me take the three block walk to school
alone. My mother would mostly take me to class, but on days she wasn t feeling well, she would
have my father take me. However, I m not sure why he would let me walk alone because if my
mother knew, she would have a panic attack. I was eager to go to school and play with my
friends at recess. Although, I liked to learn new things, I mostly liked going to school to
socialize with people my own age. I ve always had a fascination for art and numbers, which is
probably why I m artistically gifted and creative. My favorite subjects were P.E., art and math. I
received a lot of certificates for student of the month during my elementary years and was on the
honor role and principles list numerous times. Before I was able to go into fourth grade, I was

A sceptic is one who refuses to accept statements, without rigorous proof or philosophies, theories or religious views without substantial evidence, so Horatio can be referred to as a sceptic because of his unbelief in ghosts. The Tudors were very superstitious people who believed in spirits, ghosts and apparitions. This is emphasized in Act One, Scene One where the sentries on watch are constantly talking about spirits, apparitions and inhuman things. One example of this is Marcellus speech in which he says; What has this thing appeared again? This suggests that he is talking about something that is inhuman, and so this creates tension as the audience wait to find out what he is actually talking about. The Literacy context in Hamlet is that of a tragedy. Hamlet is one of Shakespeare s most famous revenge tragedy. We see the genre of tragedy in Act One, Scene One where Horatio talks of King Fortinbras of Norway s death at the hand of King Hamlet of Denmark, and Prince Fortinbras subsequent desire for revenge. Horatio talks of young Prince Fortinbras saying: Now sir, young Fortinbras, of unimproved mettle hot and full, Hath in the skirts of Norway here and there Sharked up a list of lawless resolutes . • 3. Agricultural Export Commodities ( Stokes Howden 2010 ) The wine industry in Australia is one of the most highly valued agricultural export commodities (Stokes Howden 2010). Viticulture is an agricultural sector that is closely associated with climate as the production of unique wine is reliant upon specific combinations of climate, soils and landscape to create particular styles (Stokes Howden 2010; Webb et al. 2008). Changes in climate have potential to adversely affect the quality of winegrape production. Thus, climate change is set to become a major challenge for the wineindustry, and contest the adaptive capability of the industry. As a result of the increasing awareness of the potential consequences of significant climate variability, it is essential that the industry explores possible strategies to enable adaptation to change. The Margaret River wine region The Margaret River wine region of Western Australia is highly regarded as a premium wine region in Australia (Jones et al. 2010). The production of high quality wines, however, means that the region has potential to suffer from modifications in quality by the slightest climatic changes. Thus, climate change has potential to adversely impact the viticultural industry. At present, the Margaret River wine region experiences a Mediterranean style climate, with factors of temperature, soil quality and humidity all well suited to high quality wine production. The economic impact of the Margaret River wine industry is approximately an annual $250 million. Climate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Collective Bargaining Essay 1. Does the presence of unions increase the likelihood that management will be fairer and more consistent with employers? Management is on the side of the employers, since many of those positions are unable to in the union (Huston, 2010, p. 294). If the manager holds a full time supervisor position, then they aren t eligible to join the union, which in turn may upset them when the union renegotiates their terms, and the nurses get better benefits. An example of this is that a floor supervisor can actually make less money than that of the floor nurse, and they don t get any overtime pay (S. Smothers, personal communication, Fall, 2009). There are two types of relations that unions can have with management; acceptance, and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 3. Can the need for unionization be eliminated simply by management being more attentive to worker needs and being willing to provide employees reasonable working conditions and a voice in decision making? I believe that when management is threatened by a union coming, they are desperate at that moment and would try anything to avoid it from happening. Therefore they are willing to try to negotiate with nurses to help make them feel as though they are empowered (Huston, 2010, p. 293). However, this may only be a momentarily gain for the nurse, because if they don t unionize management will go back to their old practices. An article called The impact of collective bargaining published by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) states decision making authority with staff nurses without a union is exceedingly rare (2011). Unions help to increase wages, fringe benefits, better pension plans, safety, help keep RNs and displace other staff during layoff (if at all possible), restrict unsafe floating, and ban mandatory overtime and shift rotation (Huston, 2010, p. 291 292, and (National Nurses United, 2010). Without a union many of these issues would still be in play today. Plus a union will go to bat for them when needed, which was the case in a Virginia Mason Hospital when they tried to mandate that all nursing staff had to get immunized (Rosenbaum, 2008). ... • 5. The Small Arms Industry ( 3484 ) Industry Overview The Small Arms Industry (3484) is a subgroup of the Fabricated Metal Products Industry. The Small Arms Industry primarily engages in manufacturing small firearms (pistols, revolvers, rifles, shotguns and submachine guns) having a bore 30 mm or less, and also the parts for small firearms. Historically the small arms industry has been cyclical and subject to many pressures, including the general state of the economy, worldwide military conflicts, and political opinions concerning private ownership of firearms. For example, gun sales rose in the days following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and also rose in the days following the recent terrorist attacks by ISIS all over the world. The border conflicts, war like situations and the threats caused by rising terrorism are expected to boost the small arms market for armed forces, across the world. With the use of small arms for self defense, sport shooting, hunting, climate pollution monitoring, border security operations, and military, the demand for small arms is expected to drive this market. The small arms industry has seen a tremendous increase in revenue of 7% per year. According to the US Census Bureau, in 2002 the small arms industry had a revenue of $1.12 billion and increased to $3.67 billion in 2012. Many customers are forced to say positive, but not necessarily true, traits about themselves or hotels and are usually rated by companies unfairly. For Uber, customers are rated on their behavior, but there are no real standards suggesting what is meant by good, bad, or mediocre behavior. It is purely up to the designation of the driver, which can be more opinionated than factual. Thus, it is not a surprise when a passenger feels perplexed to find out his or her passenger score has been lowered even if the passenger did everything in his or her power to leave a lasting impression on the driver. The paper will conclude with a discussion of outcomes between 1977 2003 using data supplied by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Assessment Economic integration aims to reduce cost and increase value for both producers and consumers. This is accomplished by increased international trade for goods and services. Economic integration has expanded markets by which firms can play . Firms are more self serving, their motive is to reduce cost and increase profits. To do this firms have begun to off shore their operations. Off shoring allows a firm to lower cost and establish a presence closer to target markets. This process has become easier with technology advances. For example, information can be shared and transactions made with the click of a button. • 10. Essay Functions of the Chorus in Shakespeare s Henry V Functions of the Chorus in Shakespeare s Henry V In Shakespeare s Henry V, the chorus plays a prominent role. There are few other plays written by Shakespeare that include a chorus, however in no other play does the chorus have such an important role. The principal purpose of the chorus is that of story telling. The chorus acts as a guide for the audience, narrating parts that wouldn t fit into the action of the play. For example in the Act II Chorus, we are told about treason: The sum is paid, the traitors are agreed, the king is now set from London, and the scene is now transported, gentles, to Southampton. As we can see, the chorus reviews what has happened in previous scenes and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The prologue raises our expectation of Henry, as we know previously he had been a bit of a rebel. It now calls him the Warlike Harry ; it says he is like Mars, the god of war. Throughout the play, the audience are reminded how great Henry is. In Act V s chorus, Henry is compared to Caesar , a great roman emperor and by the epilogue Henry is The star of England . However, Henry also has a less attractive side, which is occasionally portrayed in the scenes between the choruses. This may seem inconsistent. Henry can be cunning and manipulative. When he wishes to fight the French, he says to the Archbishop of Canterbury that he wants his blessing, because then God will be on his side. If Canterbury agrees, then effectively anything bad that happens to Henry and his army thereafter is his fault. May I with right of conscience make this claim? Henry asks the Archbishop of Canterbury, who replies The sin upon my head, dread sovereign . The audience will react to this, they begin to realise that Henry is a clever man. • 11. What Makes Good People Do Bad Things By Susan Dittman Describing someone with the word evil refers to them committing an action that is considered immoral and malicious. Evil people pull off these type acts: robbing a bank, violent killings of living creatures, and even mental abuse through verbal or physical actions. Many people always wonder, what was the initial purpose of committing such inhumane actions? They may say hatred, anger, and revenge are some of the causes of evil. Although these traits do cause the idea of evil in an individual, the inspiration for iniquitous intents is in fact sprouted through the unideal human traits of apathy and ego. One of the human traits that cause evil is apathy; for it makes people not consider the other individuals feelings and security. Every ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another example is in fact in our society. In modern society, people tend to act as bystanders, people who don t pay attention to their surroundings. Take into the account of witnessing the scenarios of someone being bullied and a homeless man begging for money. In the bullying scenario, most of the time, the people acting like bystanders do nothing about the situation at hand. Typically, the right idea is to address the stakes at hand, whether calling for help or even putting oneself out there. Unfortunately, our society ignores the fact of another human is being verbally or physically abused. We tend to be in our own little worlds when we encounter an event such as bullying due to the fact we feel as if there isn t a way we can help. Instead of helping a fellow peer with a challenge, we re afraid to put ourselves out there. We refuse because we mainly care for our well being or we simply don t believe we have what it takes to fix the situation; this leads to the feeling of apathy. The homeless person scenario is no different. When a homeless person begs for money, the common courtesy is to of course contribute any amount of money towards the homeless man; however, this concept ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Introduction Allan Bullock and S.Trombley (1999) refer worldview to a general conception of the nature of the world, particularly as containing or implying a system of value principles. What constructs such a system of value principles may vary depending on each fundamental belief. It becomes essential to know the various type of worldview as it helps us to comprehensively understand our own worldview and gain insight from others. Just as a mirror allows us to see our own face, so an alternative coherent worldview illuminates and clarifies our own worldview (Zaman, 2008). Differences in worldview are the essential foundation of differences in any system, including economic system. As Chapra (1992) said that worldview performs the same function for an economic system as the foundation does for a building: even though the supporting foundation is invariably invisible and unmentioned, it continues to play a determining role. In general, there are three major economic systems which based on completely distinct worldviews: capitalism, socialism, and Islamic economic system. Capitalism and socialism as the prevailing systems have been proven to be unsuccessful in solving economic problems comprehensively. One of the failure evidence, global financial crisis in 2008, which demonstrated reckless financing instrument and moral deficiency, provides a wider opportunity for Islamic moral economy to be perceived ... First a financial statement audit involves obtaining and evaluating evidence about an entity s presentation of its financial position, results of operations, and cash flows for the purpose of expressing an opinion on whether they are presented fairly in conformity with established criteria (Boynton Johnson, 2006). Next an operational audit involves obtaining and evaluating evidence about the efficiency and effectiveness of an entity s operating activities in relation to specified objectives (Boynton Johnson, 2006). Last a compliance audit involves obtaining and evaluating evidence to determine whether certain financial or operating activities of an entity conform to specified conditions, rules, or regulations (Boynton Johnson, 2006). The standards of GAAS apply to all three types of audits in more ways than one. First the general standards must all be adhered before any auditor can perform an audit in any entity. The standards of field work also must be followed while in the entity performing the audit. When reporting the results of the audit the standards of reporting must be followed. The enormous scale of grand corruption in Peru was revealed in 2000 by discoveries leading to the resignation and self exile of the president, Alberto Fujimori. Video taped evidence showed that Vladimir Montesano s, Fujimori s spy chief, had repeatedly bribed congressmen to defect to Fujimori s party to ensure its majority in congress. In addition, large bribes had enabled Montesano s to control most of the media and influence the judiciary. However, Fujimori is credited with having reduced petty corruption. Planet Of Slums By Mike Davis Essay Mike Davis, author of Planet of Slums, predicts the direction in which the world s cities are headed, and how the changes in living conditions are only going to deteriorate if certain trends continue. The title of his book explains Davis s vision for the future of cities as he feels there is enough evidence pointing towards an exponential rise in slum populations across the world s largest cities. Additionally, he expresses his opinion on many issues regarding the rapid rise in developing cities slum populations, although he offers very one sided arguments geared towards those who feel the current system is causing more problems rather than improving current conditions. This causes Davis to overlook the problems of slums as resolvable through different modes of assistance such as international aid programs. Instead, he views aid programs as the root cause of imbalance created during industrialization. Throughout the book, Davis presents information that confirms his preconceptions towards the slums. Therefore, all the evidence that is presented by him portrays confirmation bias as Davis fails to mention anything about the resolution of the problem of the growing number of slums and instead sees this problem as unavoidable. • 31. The Blind Side Vs. Great Expectations Classic Novels: The Blind Side vs. Great Expectations Classic novels are almost abundant in this day and age. One can find them almost anywhere, and the meanings can impact life in a major way. Although many books hold the honor of being considered a classic, some stories are on the outskirts, hoping to have the chance to join the ranks. Stories like these hope to one day join this honorable list. The Blind Side by Michael Lewis is one of those stories. The characters are relatable, the setting sets the tone of the story, the plot is driven hard throughout the story, and the overall themes of the story are universal. The Blind Side truly is an all time classic. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, three main points categorize a classic. The story must be considered the best of its kind. In other words, it has to be popular among its literary genre for an extended period, such as Great Expectations or A Tale of Two Cities in the autobiographical fiction genre. It has to be an example of excellence. That means it has to be shown to make a change in the lives of people, such as Grapes of Wrath showing people they can overcome any obstacle thrown in their way. The story can not only be famous for a year to be considered a classic. It has to be remembered for years and years to come, such as Old Yeller or The Great Gatsby. • 32. Comparison Of Ethos And Pathos In Advertising In today s age, advertisements are found in almost every situation. These advertisements are found in a multitude of different places, including places such as billboards, newspapers, and on the television. Advertisements are most successful if they incorporate ethos, pathos, and logos into the message they are trying to present. Ethos is the credibility of an advertisement, pathosis the emotional appealof an advertisement, and logos is the logic found in the advertisement. This paper will show the similarities and differences in pathos, logos, and ethos found in two separate Budweiser advertisements. Ethos, pathos, and logos are all rhetorical appeals, meaning that they are used to assist the speaker or writer in harnessing rhetoric. Clark (2016) considers rhetoric as a tool meant for persuasion as well as for creating effective arguments. Rhetoric became extremely popular during the golden age of Greece, and most elite young men in Greek city states such as Athens were trained to utilize rhetoric to their fullest abilities (Clark, 2016). Plato, an ancient Greek philosopher, believed that rhetoricians those who used rhetoric to influence and sway opinions used rhetoric irresponsibly (Clark, 2016). Rhetoric certainly did not die out with the passing of time and is still found in today s modern era. Of these three appeals, pathos is the most prevalent in both advertisements. An inherent form of pathos in the Budweiser commercial was the relationship between a puppy and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There were also millions of immigrants added to the workforce. When that many new workers were added to the labor force, of course it was not without effect on industrial wages they were driven down. Both outsourcing and immigration affected the economy in more ways than just the cost of labor. Products were manufactured at a lower cost and thus sold for a lower price. • 34. Interpreting The Matrix through Descartes’s Philosophy Essay Many ancient philosophers, including Plato, explored metaphysics in relation to reality before Descartes s in depth questioning of the subject. However, Descartes s views on mind/body dualism differ greatly from Plato s. As Marleen Rozemond (author of Descartes s Dualism) points out, Plato believes that the body is simply a vessel for the soul to use, while Descartes provides proof that the body and soul are interconnected (172). One does not simply use the other; though they are separate, the mindaffects the body and the body affects the mind. Cartesian dualism tells us that although the whole mind seems to be united to the whole body, I recognize that if a foot or arm or any other part of the body is cut off, nothing has thereby been... Descartes states that: Once the foundations of a building are undermined, anything built on them collapses of its own accord; so I will go straight for the basic principles on which all my former beliefs rested. Whatever I have up till now accepted as most true I have acquired either from the senses or through the senses. But from time to time I have found that the senses deceive, and it is prudent never to trust completely those who have deceived us even once. (384) Through questioning the knowledge he had always believed to be true, Descartes comes to realize that many of his basic beliefs were founded on sensual knowledge. This leads him to question his very existence, and eventually to search for unconditional proof of his existence Christopher Falzon, philosophy lecturer and author of Philosophy Goes to the Movies and Philosophy and The Matrix, points out that The Matrix employs Cartesian style skepticism in its attempt to inundate the viewer in this cyber world ( Philosophy and the Matrix 99). This is seen in Neo s choice between the red pill and blue pill in The Matrix, which can be likened to Descartes s employment of the acid test. Neo, a computer hacker, is told that a man named Morpheus can tell him the meaning of the Matrix, a term that Neo has encountered several times. Upon meeting Morpheus, Neo is given a choice: he can take a blue pill which will make him forget about his quest to discover the meaning of the Matrix, or he can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. The Importance Of A Happy Life Would you be willing to let go of your deepest darkest fears to pursue the honorable? According to Seneca, For what prevents us from saying that the happy life is to have a mind that is free, lofty, fearless and steadfast a mind that is placed beyond the reach of fear, beyond the reach of desire, that counts virtue the only good, baseness the only evil, and all else but a worthless mass of things, which come and go without increasing or diminishing the highest good, and neither subtract any part from the happy life nor add any part to it? A man thus grounded must, whether he wills or not, necessarily be attended by constant cheerfulness and a joy that is deep and issues from deep within, since he finds delight in his own resources, and desires no joys greater than his inner joys. Seneca s statement shows the rejection of all base pleasures and desires to be the foundation for good stoic philosophy. Stoicism, a Hellenistic philosophical school started by Zeno of Citium in the early 3rd century B.C, flourished in Ancient Rome during the time of Cicero and Caesar. The Stoics stressed personal freedom, virtue, natural law, reason, and self control. • 40. Fascism And Nazism Similarities Fascism and Nazism. Both once prominent forms of government during the 20th century, and now the number of countries that use either one of these governments is diminishing. Fascism and Nazism both emerged because of a general crisis of the European political system during the late 19th century to the end of World War 1. Fascism was motivated by the fears of of social as well as political disintegration, and of political revolution on the part of both ruling of the lower and middle classes (Encylopedia.com Editors, 2017). Europe would later see many Nazi and Fascists movements during the time period between World War 1 and World War 2; however, in only Italy and Germany did these forms of government manage to come to power and develop into their respective regimes (Encylopedia.com Editors, 2017). While these two once prominent governments share some similarities, they also share many differences. Fascism first exploded onto the political scene during the 1919 as the first mass movement of of the middle class citizens in both Italy as well as Germany. In this political party, important sections of the economic and political establishments sought out to attempt to preserve the status quo in the revolutionary times (Encylopedia.com Editors, 2017). Even though I had to practice several hours a day instead of playing outside, I enjoyed mastering a new piece and performing in front of an audience. Unfortunately, my hands could not reach a full octave of keys. This made it impossible to play some of the more complex pieces and I eventually stopped playing once I moved to the US. During my freshman year of high school, a friend convinced me to try playing again on the pianolocated in an isolated hallway of our school. Despite not touching a piano in years, once I placed my hands on the keys, my muscle memory was sufficient to playthe first half of Fur Elise . When she then gave me a piece of music, I was surprised to see that I had not forgotten how to sight read, which was my least favorite part of piano lessons when I was younger. Hesitantly, I was able to follow the sheet music and start playing one hand at the time. As I practiced over the next few days, I could once again play most of the pieces I once mastered.
