The 1900 Hurricane Book Review
It is difficult to even imaging how serious hurricanes can be. Category 5 hurricanes are the
strongest storms. Winds howl at more than 155mph. (33) They can be more than 300 miles from
one side to another. (6) In this nonfiction book, Wood begins with a description of Hurricane
Katrina. He describes how it was one the worst storms in U.S. history. It devastated the Gulf
coast with 140 mph winds ripping apart buildings and tearing down power lines. The main
damage to New Orleans was due to big holes breaking through the levee and Lake Pontchartrain s
water flooding the city. Some areas were 20 feet deep, which left people stranded on their roofs
for days before help arrived. The book continues by describing hurricanes and what causes them.
Hurricanes are storms with strong, swirling winds up to 200 mph and can be more than 300
miles wide. These high winds are often destructive to cars, trucks, power lines, buildings and even
roads. Hurricanes need heat and moisture to form. Then, the Earth s rotation gives the winds a
twist. (14) If the hurricanes stay near warm water, it has plenty of energy to stay strong. However,
many hurricanes weaken as they reach land, since there is no warm water on land. The authors
explained that there are four stages of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To close the book, the author discussed the future of preparing for hurricanes. Early warning
systems are now in place to broadcast alerts to seek shelter. Better satellites take pictures and alert
weather forecasters who then watch all the steps of each storms path. Special computer programs
called models, help forecasters guess where the storm will make landfall. They also show how
strong a hurricane will be and the amount of damage people can expect.

Ordinary People Pay Disparity
University of the People Introduction Over half a century ago, the pay disparity between the
regular employee and a multimillion dollar corporation s chief executive officer, according to
Mackey (20140), was at such a low ebb compare to this modern day and time. Life, then, was
simple. Expenditure was at a bare minimum. Most necessities, especially food, were readily
available. People spent less and saved more. The pay gap, to say the least, was appreciable.
Nearly six decades ago, the salary gap kept widening. Those who own the means of production
aren t saying anything. The employees continue to live on starvation wage struggling to make
ends meet. What is wrong with us? The world is getting very unequal. Ordinary people have
demonstrated, conducted sit in, and petitioned governments and international organizations to fix
the issue of inequality in all areas of life. So far, they ve made no headway. Protests like Occupy
Wall Street, Occupy Toronto, lack Lives Matter, the perennial G 20s and its offshoots have so far
fallen on deaf ears. These protests called on business and political leaders to do something about
the gap between the haves and the haves not.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The disparity is hurting the ordinary citizens. It s affecting them emotionally, psychologically and
physically. If the current pay structure remains in place, it tends to demotivate workers, and
production and its quality will be affected. The current policies must change. Corporations should
begin to chart new plans to reduce the compensation gaps between their CEOs and the ordinary
workers. The world is changing every day for the better. Wages of employees are lower than in 10
years ago (Mishel, L., Bivens, J., Gould, E., Shiertholz, H.

The General Theory Of Crime Essay
Main Body As the nineties began, the general theory of crime became the most prominent
criminological theory ever proposed; furthermore, it is empirically recognized as the primary
determinant in deviant and criminal behaviors. Known also as the self control theory, the general
theory of crime can most simply be defined as the absence or lack of self control that an individual
possesses, which in turn may lead them to commit unusual and or unlawful deeds. Authored by
educator Michael R. Gottfredson and sociologist Travis Hirschi, A General Theory of Crime(1990)
essentially dumbed down every theory of crime into two words, self control. The widely
accepted book holds that low self control is the main reason that a person initiates all crimes,
ranging from murder and rape to burglary and embezzlement. Gottfredson and Hirschi also
highlighted, in A General Theory of Crime (1990), that low self control correlates with personal
impulsivity. This impulsive attitude leads individuals to become insensitive to deviant behaviors
such as smoking, drinking, illicit sex, and gambling (p. 90). The extreme simplicity, yet accuracy,
of Gottfredson s and Hirschi s general theory of crime (self control theory), make it the most
empirically supported theory of criminal conduct, as well as deviant acts. First off, there have been
ample amounts of disapproval in relation to the general theory of crime, because many scholars feel
that Gottfredson and Hirschi (1990) failed to include the

Essay On Satyam Scandal
RECOMMENDATION
The 2009 Satyam scandal in India has highlighted the shameful potential of an improperly
governed corporate leader. Some recommendations can be made from the mistakes learnt from the
scandal to further avoid such mishaps. First, all inaccuracies are to be investigated as a lot of fraud
schemes initially start out small, with the thought that small changes here and there would not
make a big difference, and is less likely to be detected. The fraud scheme at Satyam started very
small that eventually grew into $276 million. Second, Corporate Governance needs to be Stronger
as a Fraud of such a kind does not only look bad on a company; it also ruins the reputation of the
whole industry and the country. India has been adopting Corporate ... Show more content on

The culture at Satyam, especially dominated by the board, represented an unethical culture.
Satyam was brought to its knee due to tunneling effect unlike Enron, which sank due to agency
problem. All kind of frauds have proven that there is a need for good conduct based on strong
ethics. The debacle of Satyam raised a debate about the role of CEO in driving an organization to
the heights of success and its relationship with the board members and ore committees. The fraud at
Satyam brought to the light the role of CG in influencing the protocols related to the working of
audit committee and duties of board members (Niazi, and Ali, 2015). The government of India took
very quick actions to protect the interest of the investors of Satyam, the nation s image across the
world and, safeguard the credibility of India. Moreover, Satyam fraud has forced the government to
re‐write the CG rules and tightened the norms for auditors and accountants (Bhasin, 2013b). The
Indian affiliate of PwC ―routinely failed to follow the most basic audit procedures. The SEC
and the PCAOB fined the affiliate, PwC India, $7.5 million in what was described as the largest
American penalty ever against a foreign accounting firm (Norris, 2011). According to Mr. Chopra,
President (ICAI), ―The Satyam fraud was not an auditing or accounting failure, but one of CG.
This apex body had found the two PwC auditors prima facie guilty of professional misconduct. The
CBI, which investigated the Satyam fraud case, also charged the two auditors with complicity in
the commission of the fraud by consciously overlooking the accounting irregularities. The Satyam
fraud, finally, had to end and the implications were having far reaching consequences. With all the

The Responsibility Of Protecting ´
The ВґResponsibility to ProtectВґ (R2P) concept first came about in a 2001 report from the
International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty (ICISS), which was set up after,
then Secretary General, Kofi Annan, said there needed to be some a change in the United
Nations charter regarding military forces in humanitarian interventions. This came following the
criticism of the NATO intervention in Kosovo in 1999. The report further evolved into the
concept that was approved in the UN s General Assembly in 2005 (Evans 2014; Zyberi and
Mason n.d. 2013: 7, 513). In 2009 the UN confirmed a continued endorsement of R2P under the
formula of three pillars and four crimes (Zyberi and Mason n.d. 2013: 10). The main issue with
R2P has... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The review will then conclude with an article from Evans, who goes over the use of R2P through
the years, where it stands today and compares the situations in Libya and Syria.
Even though R2P has been accepted in the UN General Assembly and is widely used in the
literature of humanitarian issues, Zyberi and Mason point out that R2P is not a binding norm of
international law although it does have a clear legal dimension to it. R2P is rather seen an
international social, political and moral norm and even though it doesn t prohibit unilateral
humanitarian intervention it does not grant States a legal right to intervene (2013: 13 14).
According to Zyberi and Mason s analyses of the State responsibility in the context of R2P, they
find it to have several different meanings and vary according to which perspective it s looked at
from as the State and policies are influenced differently and the scope of obligations is different
for a State s individual and collective responsibility (2013: 32 33). The political framework of R2P
is therefore based on fundamental principles of international law and epitomises the humanitarian
character of those laws that have been put in place to protect people in the world and their right to
peace. The institutional efforts, however, to operationalise R2P differ considerably from one
organisation to another (2013: 511 512). Zyberi and Mason say that along with the problem of
different understanding

Modulating Gene Expression with Multiple Intermediate Steps
Gene expression can be modulated by multiple intermediate steps, including transcription, post
transcriptional modifications, RNA splicing, translation, and post translational modifications;
transcription being the first step and a key mechanism for regulating gene expression.
Transcriptional control is mediated through promoters and regulatory elements, which are all
essential for spatiotemporally correct gene expression. Genome organization has been undoubtedly
linked with regulation of geneexpression through global analyses of mammalian genomes. Previous
hypotheses suggested that genome is arranged as independently regulated chromosomal domains
flanked by boundary elements (i.e. insulators). This might be true in compact genomes of
organisms such as yeasts (e.g. S. cerevisiae 12.1 Mb), where an uninterrupted genomic segment (i.e.
regulatory expression unit) is formed comprising of a particular gene and its regulatory elements.
Nevertheless, in more complex genomes such as those of humans (H. sapiens 3.2 Gb) and mouse
(M. musculus 2.7 Gb) the situation is substantially more complex, where genes and their regulatory
elements can be dispersed over many hundreds of kilobases. These observations concur with current
hypotheses, where cis regulatory elements including Locus Control Regions (LCRs), enhancers,
silencers, and insulators, may be dispersed over tens to thousands of kilobases. Furthermore, cis
regulatory elements of one gene are commonly embedded within a neighbour

Examples Of Wisdom In The Iliad
Wisdom Younger men are changeable; he in his age among them, looking before and after, can
see clearly, what shall be in the interests of all. (Homer 65) This is what Menelaos, Helen s
husband and king of the Mycenaeans, addressed his army with in Book Three of the Iliad by
Homer. I disagreed with Menelaos and what he told his army. First, whether one is young or old,
everyone changes one s mind. For example, throughout the Iliad we can see that Zeus, king of the
gods, changes his mind on whether or not the gods can help in the Trojan War between the
Greeks and the Trojans. At the beginning of Book Eight, Zeus addresses the gods saying, If I
catch sight of anyone slipping away with a mind to assist the (Greeks) or the Trojans, he comes
back blasted without ceremony, or else he will be flung out of Olympos into the murk of Tartaros
that lies deep down in underworld, but then he turns around and starts interfering with the... Show

Zeus, despite having years of wisdom from his many years of life, changes his mind on whether
the gods can interfere with the war. This example proves that even if one is old one can still
change one s mind. Second, wisdom, by the world s standpoint, is not based off of age, but off
of cognition among other qualities. Vivian Clayton, a neuropsychologist, did a study in the 1970
s on wisdom. After asking retired judges and law students and professors, who would have all
been considered wise, she concluded that wisdom is based off of the cognition, compassion, and
reflection of a person. Monika Ardelt, an associate of Vivian Clayton, then proceeded to test other
people asking them questions based on cognition, compassion, and reflection. She found that her
older subjects had less cognition than her younger subjects. These experiments and studies show
that wisdom, from the world s view, is based off of cognition, among other qualities, not age.
Finally, one does not have to be old to achieve

Model (SAM) or System Advisor Model is developed by the National Renewable Energy
Laboratory (NREL) and is available for free download. Its main function is to predict the
performance and cost of residential and commercial projects. SAM has different options for
predicting the performance of photovoltaic systems. The model requires that the user choose from
different photovoltaic system models, and depending on that choice, possibly choose from
different modules and different inverter component models. The software offers a package of
performance and financial for projects with different financial structures. SAM s reports use
consistent assumptions for the different models to facilitate comparing technology and financing
options. SAM is one of many photovoltaic system models available, but is unique in the way it
integrates a photovoltaic performance model with a detailed financial model for a given project,
and in its ability to compare photovoltaic systems to other renewable energy systems. SAM has
three different choices for the user to choose from to modeling a photovoltaic system; The PVWatts
System model which is an implementation of NREL s online photovoltaic calculator, the Flat Plate
PV model which combines and separates module s component models that are available for the user
to select and; and the High X Concentrating PV model which is for concentrating PV systems. All

I Am My Research Hypothesis
I tested my research hypothesis through my one on one interviews and core questions. I used my
core questions and people skills to conduct the interviews properly. When speaking with each
woman I interviewed, I explained to them that I was asking them questions for a research project.
After this, I read the core questions directly from my iPhone that I wanted to ask the women. I
made sure that I spoke clearly and annunciated each word I spoke so that I would not have to
repeat the questions. After interviewing each woman, I went home and wrote down notes on what
each of the women said. I did not want to take notes in front of the women because I wanted them
to know that they had my undivided attention. When it comes to my values, I am the type of person
who never wants to make someone feel uncomfortable.
Interview Process A The first group I interviewed were women at Greenhouse Church. I attended a
Sunday, 9:00am church service two weeks in a row so that I could become more recognizable to
those around me. After the service, there were a few women standing outside handing out
pamphlets. I decided to interview these women because they seemed involved in their church
community. I thought they would be great candidates for answering my core questions. However,
they were the most difficult group to interview. I was not entirely familiar with the Greenhouse
Church environment, therefore I was not sure how they would react. I spent about 10 12 minutes

Essay On The Cuban Missile Crisis
13 Days: How did President Kennedy bring the Cuban missile crisis to a peaceful conclusion?
What was the cuban missile crisis? Was it a war or was it a standoff between the United States
and Soviet Union? The Cuban Missile Crisis was basically a missile scare. It was an engagement
between the United States and the Soviet Union regarding Soviet ballistic missiles that were nuclear
armed and deployed in Cuba. The Soviet Union carried the missiles from overseas by ships. This
lasted 13 days and consisted of fear, fighting, and most of all, difficult decisions for both the U.S.
and the Soviet Union.
It was in October of 1962 that a U.S. spy plane discovered that the Soviet Union had nuclear
equipped missiles placed in the country of Cuba. This was a serious threat to the United States
because Cuba was just 90 miles from our shores and Cuba was a close ally of the Soviet Union.
President Kennedy was shocked and started right away to secretly meet with his advisors to
discuss this big problem. Nuclear equipped missiles could easily reach America being that we
were so close to Cuba. He didn t want the soviet union or cuba to know that he discovered the
missiles. There were already tensions between the U.S and Soviets due to the ongoing cold war with

If he did nothing, there was a good chance that the missiles would be fired on the U.S. By
surrounding Cuba with military ships, he risked provoking the Soviets. In the end, the decision to
send a naval blockade around Cuba seemed to scare the Soviets and Cuba. It prevented nuclear
war and calmed hostilities with the Soviet Union. It even opened up a line of communication with
the Soviet Union. The presidents of both countries had a direct line to each other in case future
conflicts arose. As the president, Kennedy had a lot of pressure to make sure that he was making
smart judgements that would keep the U.S. safe and keep peace around the

Department of Exercise Science at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, an increase in body
mass due to protein supplements was most likely water retention in muscle but could also be due to
some new muscle protein (Clarkson 1999). Though athletes need more protein to keep a nitrogen
balance, it is easily obtained in a normal diet. The Department of Pharmacy at Shands Hospital
concludes that protein supplementation can lead to dehydration, gout, liver and kidney damage,
calcium loss, and gastrointestinal effects (Beltz 1993).
4. Protein Supplement and Athletes/Bodybuilders
Scientists have proven that the break down of protein in amino acids are needed in the build up of
muscle. As a result, Met Rx contains whey protein, metamyosyn, as well as other proteins. Athletes
and Bodybuilders are looking for a way to increase muscle mass, increase endurance, or reduce
body fat without damaging their bodies like using steroids, etc. Protein supplements give them the
added amino acids for muscle build up, however; the normal dietary intake of protein is adequate
for athletes as long as the energy intake is sufficient to maintain body weight (Dohm 1984). In a
study by the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Houston, a clinical trial showed
that growth hormones were significantly elevated during resting

Prejudice and Racism in Conrad’s Heart of Darkness Essay
Racism in Conrad s Heart of Darkness
Imagine floating up the dark waters of the Congo River in the Heart of Africa. The calmness of
the water and the dense fog make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck as you wonder if
the steamboats crew will eat you as you sleep. These things occur in Joseph Conrad s Heart of
Darkness. Although the book is undeniably racist, was the author, Joseph Conrad, racist? Conrad
was racist because he uses racial slurs, the slavery and unfair treatment of the native Africans in his
book.
The use of racist language is very prevalent in Heart of Darkness. Conrad, through Marlow, the
main character, uses the word nigger when talking about native Africans on many occasions. The

A normal person today would feed and pay those who work for them. It is considered morally
sound to do this. In Heart of Darkness, no one thinks it is wrong to not feed or pay those who
work for you. It would be considered wrong to help feed the workers who are starving. Conrad
raises no point in his book that this act is unacceptable. Conrad then believes it is okay. In Heart
of Darkness,it is considered reasonable to make the natives at fault for things management has
done. The manager sets Marlow s trade goods on fire and blames a native for the blaze. This act
dehumanized the native much like a slave.
Black figures strolled about listlessly, pouring water on the glow, whence proceeded a sound of
hissing; steam ascended in the moonlight; the beaten nigger groaned somewhere.
(Conrad 28)
If the native people in Heart of Darkness were paid for their work it would be so minute that the
natives would hardly be able to buy enough food to bring themselves out of starvation.
Besides that, they had given them every week three pieces of brass wire each about nine inches
long, and the theory was they were to buy their provisions with that currency in river side villages.
(Conrad 42)
The natives who received the wire never had a chance to use it because the boat never stopped at
any villages. Conrad s relaxed writing style makes it sound humorous that the natives were treated
unfairly and that is very racist.
The unfair treatment of the

Part III of this Comment will analyze the liabilities of voluntary prescription in the industry. Due
to the lack of a definitive verification process, American municipal bonds are particularly
vulnerable to investment in unhelpful green projects. New laws and regulations may turn off some
investors hoping to cash in on the tax exempt investment grade bonds. Both issuers and recipients
of the bonds will need to decide whether they care more about making green or being green. Part
III of this Comment will also outline how investors in green bonds can use class action lawsuits to
sue issuers who mislead them or greenwash their projects for non sustainable purposes.
Part IV of this Comment will recommend definitive solutions for the green bond industry. First, the
Securities Exchange Commission Securities and Exchange Commission ( SEC ) and the

Theories of Management
Theories gave organizations a framework for knowledge and a guide to achieving their goals. The
Industrial Revolution prompted the need for better supervision of workers to boost productivity
within the automobile, steel, and coal industries. It is because of this need that the various theories
of managementbegan to take shape. The classical management theory, which came about during the
Industrial Revolution, focused on the single best way to perform and manage tasks. This enabled
factories to operate year round and mass production of goods. But as the revolution went on, the
factories divided into separate schools of thought regarding management yet still considered it to be

robberies, burglaries, and car thefts. It is from that information that supervisors can determine
the areas that require more police presence. Most law enforcement agencies are made up of
subsystems that allow the agency to function. These subsystems, such as the Detective Bureau,
Administrative Bureau, Service Bureau, and Uniform Patrol Bureau all operate together as a
whole which is what the systems school approach to management is based on. The managers of
each of the bureaus are aware of the others function and communicate often. This is important so
that the plans of one bureau do not negatively affect those of another. When an agency joins
forces, so to speak, with an outside agency it s known as synergy. It increases the effectiveness
of the cooperation. The systems approach tells managers to keep employees focused on the
objective so that overall goals can be met. The contingency school theory is when those in
management use approaches or take actions depending on that particular situation. This theory
supports suing all or parts of past theories to solve a problem. Law enforcement utilizes this
approach on a daily basis. Officers respond to calls for service in which they are expected to
rectify. They use their years of experience and training along with past incidents of similarity and
decide on what actions are necessary to take. The contingency school is based on

Jack Ma Leadership Analysis
INTRODUCTION
The objective of this paper is to apply the knowledge learned in class by studying the leadership
characteristics and styles of a leader and what contributed to his/her successes and failures.
In my case I have chosen Jack Ma, founder and executive chairman of Alibaba Group. He has
become one of the most influential businessmen and is a global example of leadership. However,
his road to success was not easy. He had to overcome failure in several occasions and work hard to
build his own company and become an influential and powerful global leader.
The first thing that will be covered in this paper is his biography. This will help to understand what
kind of person he is, how he was able to arrive to a position of power and give an idea of his traits
and behaviors. Next, an in depth leadership analysis will follow. This analysis will be based on the
theories seen in class.
BIOGRAPHY
Jack Ma was born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. He started studying English at an early
age and practiced English every day talking with English speakers at the Hangzhou International
Hotel, 70 minutes by bicycle from home. He made free tours of the city to improve his English for
nine years. He became a pen pal with one of those foreigners, who nicknamed him Jack because he
found it difficult to pronounce his Chinese name.
Later in his youth, Ma had trouble attending college. The Chinese entrance exams take place only

Fisher s can also have a custom painted trailer with advertising on it for delivering and
transporting cars that have been restored. The trouble with this type of advertising will be
finding well known businesses willing to sponsor them and the cost of the ads. The other
concept that Fisher s can use is the retail and accessory market. Some of the different ways that it
can use this market would be by selling different types of products, for example, t shirts and hats.
Fisher s can design some one of a kind aftermarket kits for bumpers or hoods, or it can design its
own custom wheel with the new logo. The possibilities for the retail market can be almost
endless. The drawbacks to this type of market would be the product inventory, the shipping
process, and the product liability. With inventory, someone will be faced with inventory control
and taxes. Shipping would require someone responsible for boxing, labeling, and delivery. As
for product liability, the company may have to increase the amount of insurance should a

Gay Adoption Research Paper
Gay Adoption: To Condemn or Condone
Last year, 29,471 children turned 18 and left the foster care system without an adoptive family (
Adoption 1). Unfortunately for those young adults, knowing the comfort of a stable family was
not part of their childhood. Though there is a high demand for children to be adopted, the reality
is many are not being adopted. Furthermore, even though there are children that need a good
home, state governments are purposely making laws that prohibit certain groups of people from
adopting children. States like Florida and Mississippi are both culprits. Two groups that are
especially being targeted by unfair laws are gays and lesbians. These unfair laws are clear
discrimination, and they should be put to an end ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of this, the children are the ones who really suffer. If states limit the groups of people
allowed to adopt children, then more and more children will not have a family. According to the
text, There are 423,773 children in the U.S. foster care system; 114,556 of these children are
available for adoption. Their birth parent s legal rights have been permanently terminated and
children are left without a family ( Adoption 1). There are at least 114,556 children in the U.S.
foster care system waiting and waiting and waiting for a family to take them home. By
precluding gays and lesbians from adopting them, the children will be without a home for their
whole adolescent life. In addition, there are gay and lesbian couples where one of the partners
has a child from a previous marriage or relationship. Even in this case, the non biological parent
cannot adopt the child, and this leads to further suffering for the children. In the article, Final
Holdout on Same Sex Adoption , the author, Tamar Lewin, states, Hannah Marie Phillips makes
the same point, in her 8 year old fashion: We want the other name on the birth certificate like my
first mom, because both of my moms want to be a mommy, she said (2). The interview of a little
girl, Hannah Marie Phillips, explains that even she does not feel like her mothers are receiving the
justice they deserve. When the children are suffering too, something is definitely

Genetic Counseling Paper
Genetic Counseling
According to Berger (2014), a patient can receive genetic counseling to learn more about a
condition/disease he or she may possibly be at risk for and may possibly pass onto their children
(p. 88). A genetic counselor is educated and trained to describe to the patient the condition/disease,
the benefits and drawbacks for taking the genetic test, the test results meaning, and how having the
condition could affect their future children (Berger, 2014, p. 88). Then, the patient not the genetic
counselor makes decisions about his or her next steps with respect to all the information they have
been provided by the genetic counselor (Berger, 2014, p. 89).

War Between Countries And The Time Frame Of The Vast...
I would like to know more in depth what happened during major wars in the past hundred years
as well as the weapons that changed war since then. History throughout time has been in great
interest to me because it is fun to learn about why certain events happened in time and the impact
that resulted. The topic war, in particular, is the most fascinating thing that occurs throughout
history to me because of the fact that it has been used as a way to dispute conflicts between
countries and the time frame of the vast advancements that have been made in weaponry in the
past one hundred years. I feel I have accumulated basic knowledge about war throughout my high
school years by taking world and U.S history courses. These courses were the easiest for me to
learn because I was real intrigued to know why something happened which led for another event
to happen. To begin my search process, I thought of material I already knew for my subject.
Then after coming to a conclusions on material I felt like learning more about, I began reading
material off ordinary websites on my laptop. Discovering that some websites were useless led
me to rethink my choices. While reconsidering what to do, I simply went to the C.O.S academic
data base and clicked on the links SIRS Issue Researcher and Global Issues in Context . These are
the primary tools I used for most of my research. At first it was difficult due to some of the articles
not containing the information I needed and were just boring.

Socially Constructed Stereotypes
Socially constructed stereotypes play a role in the way that female professionals are perceived
in the workplace (Wolfson 44). If there were firm wide regulations for professional attire that
were applicable to both women and men, then it would be appropriate. Female lawyers have a
long standing effort of pushing boundaries of what is considered appropriate for the courtroom
(Farmer 5). A private firm can make the determination to enforce a dress code, but it cannot be
discriminatory towards protected classes such as sex or religion, therefore, it is not appropriate for
firms to restrict attire monitoring to femaleattorneys (Title VII, EEOC).
The mixed motive framework of dress codes is difficult to unravel when it comes to female
professionals.

Persuasive Essay On Animal Testing
Animal experimentation causes tremendous harm and suffering to otherwise innocent animals.
The cruelty level on testing ranges from food and water deprivation, to cosmetic purposes, to
burning and chemical exposures, to injections of diseases they would have otherwise never
contracted on their own, to purposeful death of an animal or groups of animals to see how it
would take place or how much an animal can withstand before termination (Humane Society
International). The Silver Spring Monkeys is known as the case that launched PETA. A member
of PETA went undercover in a lab that tested on 17 monkeys living in tiny wire cages that were
caked with years of feces that had accumulated (PETA). These monkeys were subjected to
surgeries where their spinal nerves were severed, rendering one or more of their limbs useless
(PETA). Through the use of shock, food and water deprivation, and other methods, the monkeys
were forced to try to regain the use of their limb(s) or go without food. The trauma of the
monkeys imprisonment was so traumatizing they ripped away their own flesh and had lost most
of their fingers from getting them caught in tiny wire cage bars. (PETA). Experimenters also
neglected to feed the 17 monkeys and would often force them to dig beneath their feces to try to
locate food. The monkeys would be moved from cage to experimental tables and rooms only with
a choking rod placed around their neck. This case was the first Supreme Court victory for animals

The Nature Of Love In Plato s Symposium
Plato s Symposium discusses the ever present, complicated, and enigmatic idea of love.
Throughout the book, each speech gives diverse and sometimes contradictory ideas on the nature
of love, its benefits, its origin, and the different types of love. Each speech builds on ideas that will
lead to the conclusion made in Diotima s speech.
Phaedrus is the first to give his speech. He says that Love promotes virtue in people, and gives
them courage. Because people want to impress their lovers and avoid shame, they will strive to
act honorably and bravely. The power of love is so strong that if there was a city comprised of boys
and their lovers, it would be the best possible system of society, for they would hold back from
all that is shameful, and seek honor in each other s eyes (10). Phaedrus emphasizes the power of
love by saying that a city founded on love would be of the highest quality.
This introduces the idea of love being a powerful motivator, therefore setting the foundation for
the ladder of love mentioned in Diotima s speech. Phaedrus is the first to introduce the idea that
love motivates people to strive for higher ideals. In his speech, the ideal is esteem in the eyes of
a loved one. Later on, more ideals such as wisdom and order will be mentioned. This will develop
into the climbing of the ladder of love, as mentioned by Diotima.
Next, Pausanias says love is not inherently good or bad. It depends on how it is performed. There
are two kinds of love: Common Aphrodite and Heavenly Aphrodite; one is just about sex, while
the other is a transaction in which a boy gives sexual favors to a man in exchange for wisdom and
enlightenment. The former type has potential to be bad, and is less valuable because it focuses on
the body more than the soul, and...the least intelligent partners (14). Pausanias places all favor on
the latter type because it focuses on what is by nature stronger and more intelligent rather than base
desires (14).
This sets the foundation for the hierarchy of the aforementioned ladder of love. According to
Diotima, the more advanced kind of love is the love of knowledge, which is what a young boy
receives through Heavenly Aphrodite. At the bottom of the ladder is the type of love

Rocky Mountain Medical Center ( Rmmc )
Introduction
Rocky Mountain Medical Center (RMMC) is a nonprofit hospital and is the result of a merger
between a legacy community hospital and a local university hospital. The merger was an intent to
gain greater market power with third party payers and more efficient operating costs but actually
resulted in significant operating losses due to lower reimbursement rates and more intense
competition. The merger consolidated administrative staff which was financially beneficial but
decreased the quality of care between the units. RMMC is motivated to stay on the front page of
health care delivery and is dedicated to innovations improving processes and programs that impact
quality outcomes.
Delivery of efficient and quality care while maintaining efficient operating costs is an important
factor in attracting new customers from a variety of backgrounds. RMMC is located in an urban
area with high unemployment, poverty and disease. The majority of its patient mix consists of
indigent care; therefore a large portion of final reimbursement comes from Medicaid and other low
reimbursement payers resulting in huge write offs of billing related services.
Performance Measurement System
It is imperative that RMMC expands its patient mix in order to increase operating income. An
important factor in achieving this result is improving the quality of care and customer satisfaction.
RMMC needs to be able to measure the current outcomes and initiate changes for improvement.

The Pros And Cons Of A Cheerleading A Sport
Most people don t consider cheerleading a sport. People say it doesn t meet the guidelines in order

one can really say anything about it not being a sport. By looking at the history of cheerleading
and the guidelines in order to be a sportI intend to prove that cheerleadingis a sport. In order for a

first one is it must be a physical activity which involves propelling a mass through space or

required. Third of all it must be governed by rules that explicitly define the time, space, and
purpose of the contest and the conditions under which a winner is declared. After reading what s
required to be considered a sport let s see if cheerleading meets those requirements. There s
stunting which meets the first guideline. Cheerleading has competitions there s the second
guideline. It has time limit, mat size, and score sheets that meets the last guideline. So far it looks

Rectification Of Cameras Captured Documents Images For...
Rectification of camera captured document images for Camera based OCR technology Abstract
Due to the rapid progress in digital cameras industry, camera captured documents becomes as
another possibility or choice for document capturing and understanding for OCR applications.
However, image quality degradations arising from the image acquisition process have severe effect
on these applications. The distortion results from digital camera may take the shape of skew,
perspective distortion or geometric distortion. We propose fully automatic preprocessing techniques
to enhance the digital camera captured images to improve the performance of OCR applications.
Our algorithms depend on the features of the text lines and letters and do not need any especial
equipment. Experimental results on a real camera captured images demonstrate 10~15 %
enhancement in current commercial OCR packages. 1.Introduction Textual content in books,
newspapers and articles have been traditionally digitized using scanners and read with the help of
optical character recognition (OCR). Recent technical advances in digital cameras have led the
OCR community to consider using them instead of scanners for document capture. Compared with
the scanner, the digital camera is quite easier to use, being able to capture images from any
viewpoint. Cameras can be easily integrated with portable computing devices such as PDAs, cell
phones, or media players. Together, these factors contribute to the growing interest

Behind a glass wall stands a live wooly mammoth and saber tooth cat. As seen on the famous
cartoon movie Ice Age, kids watch this popular film to be intrigued. Now they can not only be
fascinated with creatures that have been lurking around their imagination, but live with them thanks
to de extinction. Extinctionhas existed for over 66 million years ago, when dinosaurs were wiped
out. Now scientist have disproven the definition of extinct; (of a species, family, or other larger
group) having no living members. By showing that extinct animals that were once proven to be no

Institute of Contemporary Art
Institute of Contemporary Art
How do you make a building for contemporary art that stays contemporary in the future without
stooping to a neutral language? And how do you attract a big public without compromising the
selfish, private, exclusive time we all want to have in a museum? These questions, put forward by
Elizabeth Diller of Diller Scofidio + Renfro, represent the urbanistic motivation supporting the
construction of Boston s Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA). In such a manner Boston s ICA
engages, not only with the urban citizen, but also the urban landscape in which the site is located.
The ICA conveys the idea of architecture as art in itself. As a presenter of art to the urban citizen
and because of its open design, the inside allows the citizens to not only appreciate the art within
the building but also see the art of the building s natural environment and setting.
Boston s ICA situated at Fan Pier in South Boston represents a shift from preconceived architectural
constructs to more innovative forms. The building s position in the middle of a currently
undeveloped urban landscape gives it a striking entity that engages the viewer in a way that
facilitates its various functions as a contemporary art museum. Furthermore its structure and
location alter the population s understanding of museum architecture as it has traditionally been
defined, that it is a shell that contains significant artistic work. A visual paradox becomes evident

Why I Want To Be A Bartender Essay
Life as a bartender, all started when I was stationed in Germany in 1997. I went to the NCO club
at lunch time, after work, and on weekends to play the slots machines, until the club section for
dancing opened. Nonetheless, being at the club constantly made people asked me if I worked
there. It made sense to me to work, have fun, and get paid. I love to be surrounded by all different
types of people. Positions were needed to be filled, so I applied for the bartender position.
Everyone knew me by name.
Since I was in the military, permission from my Commander and supervisor was need. My
supervisor SFC Weathersby vouched for me to Captain Sorenton assuring that my bartender duties
would not interfere with my military duties as a Soldier. SFC Weathersby verified that if it
interfered with my military whatsoever, that I would relinquish my job at the NCO club

Teenage pregnancy may not be one of the bigger issues of the world, like war or drug abuse, but
it still holds credibility. It also does not have a high declining rate. All of the world teenagers still
get pregnant, whether it be by a small or high percentage, and the government has no way to stop
it. However, the government can control what happens afterwards, when the baby is born.
Obviously, teens would have trouble in raising a baby on their own because they are not yet adults
so they need both financial and supportive help. So the government created Acts to help and states
carried out assistance programs as well. However, there has been controversy in whether or not
teenage mothers deserve all of this help. Teenage mothers should be... Show more content on

Same with WIC, no help can be administered until they receive an affirmation from a parent of
legal guardian over 18 years of age (Welfare for Pregnant Teens 2009). Now analyzing these
programs in a psychological sense, they could be appealing to the masses. This fallacy states
that the argument is either true or good because the masses thinks so or does it (Schick, Jr. and
Vaughn 2013). Many people believe it is right for teenage mothers to get help after all most
people think that since these girls are underage they cannot support themselves. This thinking is
also a form of fallacy known as Hasty Generalization, or concluding a verdict on something based
off of evidence applying to only a few things (Schick, Jr. and Vaughn 2013). Although sometimes
it may be true it does not mean that the teenage mom cannot take care of her child, it just simply
means that she needs some help with it is all. With this assumption, leading into one side of the
argument: these adolescent mothers should not receive welfare payments. Staten Island Borough
President James Molinaro claims that welfare payments for teenage parents is a burden for
taxpayers but it also provides an encouragement for teenagers to have kids since they know they
will be financially safe (Kriss 2013). Molinaro is not the only one who has this opinion.
Representative E. Clay Shaw also agrees that if teenage mothers did not get money than they would
be more careful when having sex (Navarro 1995). Sure this

Looking back at the main building lies the main east façade with its beautiful porch leading up
to the main structure. The size and exquisite decor is what takes the mind of the city view and
into the past of a revival architecture. Constructed by Henry C. Trost from Trost Trost Architects
Engineers, this building serves as a revival evoking memories from Greece and Rome. The
façade itself consists of six shafts or columns which indicate the ionic part of the Corinthian
style structure. The Corinthian style capitals are a piece of work; they take the viewer back in
time. The Corinthian leaves and beautifully carved flowers are clearly visible as if time had no
effect on the buff terra cotta. The detail is acute and precise, to the extent that beautiful is a dull
word to describe the vision. The bases of the columns are like a perfect structure that hold a grand
shaft that leads to beauty on top. Furthermore, each column is big, no, in fact they are huge, they
are elegant in their design and seem to fit one another as they stand side by side. Above the six
columns lies the architrave. The architrave is a small part of the structure but fine to the last detail,
it is astonishing the level of perfection that was achieved down to the last inch of this structure.

Education Is The Most Important Part Of Every Human
Today, Education is the most important part of every human being in this world. But, how can a
developed country like the United States consider education as a privilege rather than a need.
Today, America is suffering from lack of workforce and education crisis. America s economy is
collapsing and it is losing to countries like china, Brazil, Russia, etc. because Americans are
deprived of education because of high collegecosts. High school graduates in America want to
attend college but when they attend college, either they drop out of college or they graduate but
end up paying money for studentdebtand loans throughout their life. According to Vermont
senator Bernie sanders, today Americans have a burden of 1.3 trillion dollars in debts and
loans. This amount is much greater than the amount of credit card. Because of lack of
education, there is a huge income gap between the wealthier and poor. America is called, Land
of the Free and Home of the Brave , But how can a country be the home of the brave if its people
are not educated. To make America better and stronger, education should be free for every U.S.
citizen and so the public universities and colleges should be free. A free education would enable
every American to achieve the American Dream. It would fill the income gap between poor and
rich and would boost the economy of the nation. For a better understanding, we must look at the
cost of tuition of public universities in America. In the past decade, the cost

Havisham Essay
Havisham essay.
Miss Havisham is a bitter and twisted character from the novel Great Expectations by Charles
Dickens. Carol Ann Duffy takes this character and explores her tragic life in the poem Havisham .
Duffy uses Dark themes, structure, symbolism and other poetic techniques to express Havisham s
hatred for men after her tragic wedding when she was rejected by her fiancГ©. Duffy s use of
these poetic techniques create a sinister character and makes Havisham feel real to the reader.
To begin the poem Duffy uses a shocking short sentence, which contains contrasting word choice to
convey an ironic tone from Havisham. The contradictory oxymoron also startles the reader and
grasps our attention as we do not expect this beginning. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She even begins to make animalistic screams which are symbolic of darkness and death. cawing
nooooo this neologism of no suggests an animalistic persona where her sense of language has
broken down to a series of noises which highlight her extreme mental decay. This also suggests
her self pity but makes the reader feel sympathy for the narrator as she desperately screams at the
wall showing how lost and pathetic she has become over time. The cawing is also symbolic of
death and darkness as it is resembling a crow which the reader links with death, darkness and the
devil. This combination of neologism and symbolism creates a sinister mood. Duffy s use of
neologism to emphasis Havisham s mental decay makes her feel real to the reader and her
animalistic person adds to her sinister character.
Duffy goes on to show Havisham s layers of feelings as she expresses her exterior feelings of
hatred, anger and revenge which contrast with her true feelings of love for her past lover. It is the
rejection from her lover which sends her into this downward spiral which eventually results in her
feelings of hatred for all men and desperate want for revenge. love s hate behind a white veil This
oxymoron places love and hate side by side and conceals both emotions behind a symbolic white
bridal veil, which is ironically white and contrasts with her

Money can be defined as any thing that is generally acceptable as a medium of exchange. It can
also be defined as a third commodity that is introduced between two other commodities to
facilitate exchange. Money can therefore be looked at as an instrument that helps in fulfillment of
contracts, discharge of debts and as a standard of deferred payment. Due to the obligation of
people to accept money in the discharge of debts, money is often referred to as legal tender.
The demand for money can be defined as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore the equation of exchange becomes
Md = PT
Where Md is the demand for money in the economy
This transactions demand for money is in turn determined by the level of full employment income
this is because the classical economists believe in Say s law that supply creates its own demand
assuming a full level of employment of income in the economy thus the demand for money in
fisher s approach is a constant proportion of the level of transactions which in turn bears a constant
proportion in the level of national income. Further, the demand for money is linked to the volume
of trade going on in the economy at a given time.
Criticisms of the classical theory
Its underlying assumption is that people only hold money to buy goods and services. People also
hold money to for other reasons, such as to earn interest, and to provide against the unforeseen
circumstances like sickness. It is therefore not possible to say that V will remain constant when M
is changed.
The most important thing about money in the quantity theory of money is that money is
transferable but it does not expeditiously explain why people demand or hold money.
The theory also fails to explain what makes up money. It does not clarify whether to include items
like time deposits, or savings deposits that are not immediately available to pay debts as money
without first converting them into cash.

Advantages to the Industrial Revolution in Early Modern...
Prior to industrialization, the population of Europe saw a dramatic growth from 110,000,000 to
190,000,000. What triggered this growth? Likely the end of feudalism. The end of feudal contracts
gave people a little more say in their day to day working activities, resulting in more time spent at
home, which ultimately resulted in childbearing. This would leave citizens scrambling both to
provide needs for the populationas a whole, and to improve the individuals overall quality of life.
This resulted in economists, like Adam Smith in The Wealth of Nations (1776), examining the most
cost effective method of producing the goods and services citizens demanded (such as clothing and
food). It also left others, such as Thomas Malthus in his... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was essential because the population boom that occurred from 1650 1800, where population
climbed from 110,000,000 to 119,000,000, created the need for materials food and clothing to
be produced faster to sustain growth. Machines such as the scribbling mill, and spinning jenny
did the work of a hundred hands, for every single human hand. Initially these machines were met
by workers with despair, as one machine in twelve hours could do the work of ten men by hand .
These machines also reduced labour by a third, which resulted in an increase in wage for
workers and it also worked to increase trade since nations were about to compete with one another
for cheaper resources . From an economic standpoint this shift in labour was beneficial to the
masses because instead of people exerting themselves to compete with other nations, machinery
could just take on the majority of the work, assisting in this movement. This benefitted business
owners because they did not need as many labourers, and they could also afford to lower taxes.
Smith declares the invisible hand as a necessity for society because capitalism drives people to
seek cheaper sources, and in return if you provide that you will ultimately gain wealth.
Adam Smith wrote in The Wealth of Nations that division of labour was the greatest improvement
resulting from the industrial revolution. Division of labour was beneficial to both the employee and
the employer. The

  • 2. The 1900 Hurricane Book Review It is difficult to even imaging how serious hurricanes can be. Category 5 hurricanes are the strongest storms. Winds howl at more than 155mph. (33) They can be more than 300 miles from one side to another. (6) In this nonfiction book, Wood begins with a description of Hurricane Katrina. He describes how it was one the worst storms in U.S. history. It devastated the Gulf coast with 140 mph winds ripping apart buildings and tearing down power lines. The main damage to New Orleans was due to big holes breaking through the levee and Lake Pontchartrain s water flooding the city. Some areas were 20 feet deep, which left people stranded on their roofs for days before help arrived. The book continues by describing hurricanes and what causes them. Hurricanes are storms with strong, swirling winds up to 200 mph and can be more than 300 miles wide. These high winds are often destructive to cars, trucks, power lines, buildings and even roads. Hurricanes need heat and moisture to form. Then, the Earth s rotation gives the winds a twist. (14) If the hurricanes stay near warm water, it has plenty of energy to stay strong. However, many hurricanes weaken as they reach land, since there is no warm water on land. The authors explained that there are four stages of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To close the book, the author discussed the future of preparing for hurricanes. Early warning systems are now in place to broadcast alerts to seek shelter. Better satellites take pictures and alert weather forecasters who then watch all the steps of each storms path. Special computer programs called models, help forecasters guess where the storm will make landfall. They also show how strong a hurricane will be and the amount of damage people can expect. ... • 3. Ordinary People Pay Disparity University of the People Introduction Over half a century ago, the pay disparity between the regular employee and a multimillion dollar corporation s chief executive officer, according to Mackey (20140), was at such a low ebb compare to this modern day and time. Life, then, was simple. Expenditure was at a bare minimum. Most necessities, especially food, were readily available. People spent less and saved more. The pay gap, to say the least, was appreciable. Nearly six decades ago, the salary gap kept widening. Those who own the means of production aren t saying anything. The employees continue to live on starvation wage struggling to make ends meet. What is wrong with us? The world is getting very unequal. Ordinary people have demonstrated, conducted sit in, and petitioned governments and international organizations to fix the issue of inequality in all areas of life. So far, they ve made no headway. Protests like Occupy Wall Street, Occupy Toronto, lack Lives Matter, the perennial G 20s and its offshoots have so far fallen on deaf ears. These protests called on business and political leaders to do something about the gap between the haves and the haves not.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The disparity is hurting the ordinary citizens. It s affecting them emotionally, psychologically and physically. If the current pay structure remains in place, it tends to demotivate workers, and production and its quality will be affected. The current policies must change. Corporations should begin to chart new plans to reduce the compensation gaps between their CEOs and the ordinary workers. The world is changing every day for the better. Wages of employees are lower than in 10 years ago (Mishel, L., Bivens, J., Gould, E., Shiertholz, H. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The General Theory Of Crime Essay Main Body As the nineties began, the general theory of crime became the most prominent criminological theory ever proposed; furthermore, it is empirically recognized as the primary determinant in deviant and criminal behaviors. Known also as the self control theory, the general theory of crime can most simply be defined as the absence or lack of self control that an individual possesses, which in turn may lead them to commit unusual and or unlawful deeds. Authored by educator Michael R. Gottfredson and sociologist Travis Hirschi, A General Theory of Crime(1990) essentially dumbed down every theory of crime into two words, self control. The widely accepted book holds that low self control is the main reason that a person initiates all crimes, ranging from murder and rape to burglary and embezzlement. Gottfredson and Hirschi also highlighted, in A General Theory of Crime (1990), that low self control correlates with personal impulsivity. This impulsive attitude leads individuals to become insensitive to deviant behaviors such as smoking, drinking, illicit sex, and gambling (p. 90). The extreme simplicity, yet accuracy, of Gottfredson s and Hirschi s general theory of crime (self control theory), make it the most empirically supported theory of criminal conduct, as well as deviant acts. First off, there have been ample amounts of disapproval in relation to the general theory of crime, because many scholars feel that Gottfredson and Hirschi (1990) failed to include the ... • 5. Essay On Satyam Scandal RECOMMENDATION The 2009 Satyam scandal in India has highlighted the shameful potential of an improperly governed corporate leader. Some recommendations can be made from the mistakes learnt from the scandal to further avoid such mishaps. First, all inaccuracies are to be investigated as a lot of fraud schemes initially start out small, with the thought that small changes here and there would not make a big difference, and is less likely to be detected. The fraud scheme at Satyam started very small that eventually grew into $276 million. Second, Corporate Governance needs to be Stronger as a Fraud of such a kind does not only look bad on a company; it also ruins the reputation of the whole industry and the country. India has been adopting Corporate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The culture at Satyam, especially dominated by the board, represented an unethical culture. Satyam was brought to its knee due to tunneling effect unlike Enron, which sank due to agency problem. All kind of frauds have proven that there is a need for good conduct based on strong ethics. The debacle of Satyam raised a debate about the role of CEO in driving an organization to the heights of success and its relationship with the board members and ore committees. The fraud at Satyam brought to the light the role of CG in influencing the protocols related to the working of audit committee and duties of board members (Niazi, and Ali, 2015). The government of India took very quick actions to protect the interest of the investors of Satyam, the nation s image across the world and, safeguard the credibility of India. Moreover, Satyam fraud has forced the government to re‐write the CG rules and tightened the norms for auditors and accountants (Bhasin, 2013b). The Indian affiliate of PwC ―routinely failed to follow the most basic audit procedures. The SEC and the PCAOB fined the affiliate, PwC India, $7.5 million in what was described as the largest American penalty ever against a foreign accounting firm (Norris, 2011). According to Mr. Chopra, President (ICAI), ―The Satyam fraud was not an auditing or accounting failure, but one of CG. This apex body had found the two PwC auditors prima facie guilty of professional misconduct. The CBI, which investigated the Satyam fraud case, also charged the two auditors with complicity in the commission of the fraud by consciously overlooking the accounting irregularities. The Satyam fraud, finally, had to end and the implications were having far reaching consequences. With all the 10 people involved in the multi crore accounting fraud found guilty of ... • 6. The Responsibility Of Protecting ´ The ВґResponsibility to ProtectВґ (R2P) concept first came about in a 2001 report from the International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty (ICISS), which was set up after, then Secretary General, Kofi Annan, said there needed to be some a change in the United Nations charter regarding military forces in humanitarian interventions. This came following the criticism of the NATO intervention in Kosovo in 1999. The report further evolved into the concept that was approved in the UN s General Assembly in 2005 (Evans 2014; Zyberi and Mason n.d. 2013: 7, 513). In 2009 the UN confirmed a continued endorsement of R2P under the formula of three pillars and four crimes (Zyberi and Mason n.d. 2013: 10). The main issue with R2P has... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The review will then conclude with an article from Evans, who goes over the use of R2P through the years, where it stands today and compares the situations in Libya and Syria. Even though R2P has been accepted in the UN General Assembly and is widely used in the literature of humanitarian issues, Zyberi and Mason point out that R2P is not a binding norm of international law although it does have a clear legal dimension to it. R2P is rather seen an international social, political and moral norm and even though it doesn t prohibit unilateral humanitarian intervention it does not grant States a legal right to intervene (2013: 13 14). According to Zyberi and Mason s analyses of the State responsibility in the context of R2P, they find it to have several different meanings and vary according to which perspective it s looked at from as the State and policies are influenced differently and the scope of obligations is different for a State s individual and collective responsibility (2013: 32 33). The political framework of R2P is therefore based on fundamental principles of international law and epitomises the humanitarian character of those laws that have been put in place to protect people in the world and their right to peace. The institutional efforts, however, to operationalise R2P differ considerably from one organisation to another (2013: 511 512). • 8. Modulating Gene Expression with Multiple Intermediate Steps Gene expression can be modulated by multiple intermediate steps, including transcription, post transcriptional modifications, RNA splicing, translation, and post translational modifications; transcription being the first step and a key mechanism for regulating gene expression. Transcriptional control is mediated through promoters and regulatory elements, which are all essential for spatiotemporally correct gene expression. Genome organization has been undoubtedly linked with regulation of geneexpression through global analyses of mammalian genomes. Previous hypotheses suggested that genome is arranged as independently regulated chromosomal domains flanked by boundary elements (i.e. insulators). This might be true in compact genomes of organisms such as yeasts (e.g. S. cerevisiae 12.1 Mb), where an uninterrupted genomic segment (i.e. regulatory expression unit) is formed comprising of a particular gene and its regulatory elements. Nevertheless, in more complex genomes such as those of humans (H. sapiens 3.2 Gb) and mouse (M. musculus 2.7 Gb) the situation is substantially more complex, where genes and their regulatory elements can be dispersed over many hundreds of kilobases. These observations concur with current hypotheses, where cis regulatory elements including Locus Control Regions (LCRs), enhancers, silencers, and insulators, may be dispersed over tens to thousands of kilobases. • 9. Examples Of Wisdom In The Iliad Wisdom Younger men are changeable; he in his age among them, looking before and after, can see clearly, what shall be in the interests of all. (Homer 65) This is what Menelaos, Helen s husband and king of the Mycenaeans, addressed his army with in Book Three of the Iliad by Homer. I disagreed with Menelaos and what he told his army. First, whether one is young or old, everyone changes one s mind. For example, throughout the Iliad we can see that Zeus, king of the gods, changes his mind on whether or not the gods can help in the Trojan War between the Greeks and the Trojans. At the beginning of Book Eight, Zeus addresses the gods saying, If I catch sight of anyone slipping away with a mind to assist the (Greeks) or the Trojans, he comes back blasted without ceremony, or else he will be flung out of Olympos into the murk of Tartaros that lies deep down in underworld, but then he turns around and starts interfering with the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Zeus, despite having years of wisdom from his many years of life, changes his mind on whether the gods can interfere with the war. This example proves that even if one is old one can still change one s mind. Second, wisdom, by the world s standpoint, is not based off of age, but off of cognition among other qualities. Vivian Clayton, a neuropsychologist, did a study in the 1970 s on wisdom. After asking retired judges and law students and professors, who would have all been considered wise, she concluded that wisdom is based off of the cognition, compassion, and reflection of a person. Monika Ardelt, an associate of Vivian Clayton, then proceeded to test other people asking them questions based on cognition, compassion, and reflection. She found that her older subjects had less cognition than her younger subjects. These experiments and studies show that wisdom, from the world s view, is based off of cognition, among other qualities, not age. Finally, one does not have to be old to achieve ... • 10. System Advisor Model Is Developed By The National... Gerardo M Gallardo Independent Study EEL 4905 Spring 2015 03/09/15 System Advisor Model (SAM) or System Advisor Model is developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and is available for free download. Its main function is to predict the performance and cost of residential and commercial projects. SAM has different options for predicting the performance of photovoltaic systems. The model requires that the user choose from different photovoltaic system models, and depending on that choice, possibly choose from different modules and different inverter component models. The software offers a package of performance and financial for projects with different financial structures. SAM s reports use consistent assumptions for the different models to facilitate comparing technology and financing options. SAM is one of many photovoltaic system models available, but is unique in the way it integrates a photovoltaic performance model with a detailed financial model for a given project, and in its ability to compare photovoltaic systems to other renewable energy systems. SAM has three different choices for the user to choose from to modeling a photovoltaic system; The PVWatts System model which is an implementation of NREL s online photovoltaic calculator, the Flat Plate PV model which combines and separates module s component models that are available for the user to select and; and the High X Concentrating PV model which is for concentrating PV systems. When speaking with each woman I interviewed, I explained to them that I was asking them questions for a research project. After this, I read the core questions directly from my iPhone that I wanted to ask the women. I made sure that I spoke clearly and annunciated each word I spoke so that I would not have to repeat the questions. After interviewing each woman, I went home and wrote down notes on what each of the women said. I did not want to take notes in front of the women because I wanted them to know that they had my undivided attention. I attended a Sunday, 9:00am church service two weeks in a row so that I could become more recognizable to those around me. After the service, there were a few women standing outside handing out pamphlets. I decided to interview these women because they seemed involved in their church community. Was it a war or was it a standoff between the United States and Soviet Union? The Cuban Missile Crisis was basically a missile scare. It was an engagement between the United States and the Soviet Union regarding Soviet ballistic missiles that were nuclear armed and deployed in Cuba. The Soviet Union carried the missiles from overseas by ships. This lasted 13 days and consisted of fear, fighting, and most of all, difficult decisions for both the U.S. and the Soviet Union. It was in October of 1962 that a U.S. spy plane discovered that the Soviet Union had nuclear equipped missiles placed in the country of Cuba. This was a serious threat to the United States because Cuba was just 90 miles from our shores and Cuba was a close ally of the Soviet Union. President Kennedy was shocked and started right away to secretly meet with his advisors to discuss this big problem. These things occur in Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness. Although the book is undeniably racist, was the author, Joseph Conrad, racist? Conrad was racist because he uses racial slurs, the slavery and unfair treatment of the native Africans in his book. The use of racist language is very prevalent in Heart of Darkness. In Heart of Darkness,it is considered reasonable to make the natives at fault for things management has done. The manager sets Marlow s trade goods on fire and blames a native for the blaze. This act dehumanized the native much like a slave. Black figures strolled about listlessly, pouring water on the glow, whence proceeded a sound of hissing; steam ascended in the moonlight; the beaten nigger groaned somewhere. (Conrad 28) If the native people in Heart of Darkness were paid for their work it would be so minute that the natives would hardly be able to buy enough food to bring themselves out of starvation. Besides that, they had given them every week three pieces of brass wire each about nine inches long, and the theory was they were to buy their provisions with that currency in river side villages. Some of the different ways that it can use this market would be by selling different types of products, for example, t shirts and hats. • 28. The Nature Of Love In Plato s Symposium Plato s Symposium discusses the ever present, complicated, and enigmatic idea of love. Throughout the book, each speech gives diverse and sometimes contradictory ideas on the nature of love, its benefits, its origin, and the different types of love. Each speech builds on ideas that will lead to the conclusion made in Diotima s speech. Phaedrus is the first to give his speech. He says that Love promotes virtue in people, and gives them courage. Because people want to impress their lovers and avoid shame, they will strive to act honorably and bravely. The power of love is so strong that if there was a city comprised of boys and their lovers, it would be the best possible system of society, for they would hold back from all that is shameful, and seek honor in each other s eyes (10). Phaedrus emphasizes the power of love by saying that a city founded on love would be of the highest quality. This introduces the idea of love being a powerful motivator, therefore setting the foundation for the ladder of love mentioned in Diotima s speech. Phaedrus is the first to introduce the idea that love motivates people to strive for higher ideals. In his speech, the ideal is esteem in the eyes of a loved one. Later on, more ideals such as wisdom and order will be mentioned. This will develop into the climbing of the ladder of love, as mentioned by Diotima. Next, Pausanias says love is not inherently good or bad. It depends on how it is performed. There are two kinds of love: Common Aphrodite and Heavenly Aphrodite; one is just about sex, while the other is a transaction in which a boy gives sexual favors to a man in exchange for wisdom and enlightenment. The former type has potential to be bad, and is less valuable because it focuses on the body more than the soul, and...the least intelligent partners (14). Pausanias places all favor on the latter type because it focuses on what is by nature stronger and more intelligent rather than base desires (14). This sets the foundation for the hierarchy of the aforementioned ladder of love. According to Diotima, the more advanced kind of love is the love of knowledge, which is what a young boy receives through Heavenly Aphrodite. At the bottom of the ladder is the type of love ... Rocky Mountain Medical Center ( Rmmc ) Introduction Rocky Mountain Medical Center (RMMC) is a nonprofit hospital and is the result of a merger between a legacy community hospital and a local university hospital. The merger was an intent to gain greater market power with third party payers and more efficient operating costs but actually resulted in significant operating losses due to lower reimbursement rates and more intense competition. The merger consolidated administrative staff which was financially beneficial but decreased the quality of care between the units. RMMC is motivated to stay on the front page of health care delivery and is dedicated to innovations improving processes and programs that impact quality outcomes. Delivery of efficient and quality care while maintaining efficient operating costs is an important factor in attracting new customers from a variety of backgrounds. RMMC is located in an urban area with high unemployment, poverty and disease. The majority of its patient mix consists of indigent care; therefore a large portion of final reimbursement comes from Medicaid and other low reimbursement payers resulting in huge write offs of billing related services. Performance Measurement System It is imperative that RMMC expands its patient mix in order to increase operating income. An important factor in achieving this result is improving the quality of care and customer satisfaction. RMMC needs to be able to measure the current outcomes and initiate changes for improvement. Rectification of camera captured document images for Camera based OCR technology Abstract Due to the rapid progress in digital cameras industry, camera captured documents becomes as another possibility or choice for document capturing and understanding for OCR applications. However, image quality degradations arising from the image acquisition process have severe effect on these applications. The distortion results from digital camera may take the shape of skew, perspective distortion or geometric distortion. We propose fully automatic preprocessing techniques to enhance the digital camera captured images to improve the performance of OCR applications. Our algorithms depend on the features of the text lines and letters and do not need any especial equipment. Experimental results on a real camera captured images demonstrate 10~15 % enhancement in current commercial OCR packages. 1.Introduction Textual content in books, newspapers and articles have been traditionally digitized using scanners and read with the help of optical character recognition (OCR). Recent technical advances in digital cameras have led the OCR community to consider using them instead of scanners for document capture. And how do you attract a big public without compromising the selfish, private, exclusive time we all want to have in a museum? These questions, put forward by Elizabeth Diller of Diller Scofidio + Renfro, represent the urbanistic motivation supporting the construction of Boston s Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA). In such a manner Boston s ICA engages, not only with the urban citizen, but also the urban landscape in which the site is located. The ICA conveys the idea of architecture as art in itself. As a presenter of art to the urban citizen and because of its open design, the inside allows the citizens to not only appreciate the art within the building but also see the art of the building s natural environment and setting. Boston s ICA situated at Fan Pier in South Boston represents a shift from preconceived architectural constructs to more innovative forms. The building s position in the middle of a currently undeveloped urban landscape gives it a striking entity that engages the viewer in a way that facilitates its various functions as a contemporary art museum. Carol Ann Duffy takes this character and explores her tragic life in the poem Havisham . Duffy uses Dark themes, structure, symbolism and other poetic techniques to express Havisham s hatred for men after her tragic wedding when she was rejected by her fiancГ©. Duffy s use of these poetic techniques create a sinister character and makes Havisham feel real to the reader. The contradictory oxymoron also startles the reader and grasps our attention as we do not expect this beginning. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She even begins to make animalistic screams which are symbolic of darkness and death. cawing nooooo this neologism of no suggests an animalistic persona where her sense of language has broken down to a series of noises which highlight her extreme mental decay. This also suggests her self pity but makes the reader feel sympathy for the narrator as she desperately screams at the wall showing how lost and pathetic she has become over time. The cawing is also symbolic of death and darkness as it is resembling a crow which the reader links with death, darkness and the devil. This combination of neologism and symbolism creates a sinister mood. Duffy s use of neologism to emphasis Havisham s mental decay makes her feel real to the reader and her animalistic person adds to her sinister character. Duffy goes on to show Havisham s layers of feelings as she expresses her exterior feelings of hatred, anger and revenge which contrast with her true feelings of love for her past lover. It is the rejection from her lover which sends her into this downward spiral which eventually results in her feelings of hatred for all men and desperate want for revenge. love s hate behind a white veil This oxymoron places love and hate side by side and conceals both emotions behind a symbolic white bridal veil, which is ironically white and contrasts with her ... Therefore the equation of exchange becomes Md = PT Where Md is the demand for money in the economy This transactions demand for money is in turn determined by the level of full employment income this is because the classical economists believe in Say s law that supply creates its own demand assuming a full level of employment of income in the economy thus the demand for money in fisher s approach is a constant proportion of the level of transactions which in turn bears a constant proportion in the level of national income. Further, the demand for money is linked to the volume of trade going on in the economy at a given time. • 54. Advantages to the Industrial Revolution in Early Modern... Prior to industrialization, the population of Europe saw a dramatic growth from 110,000,000 to 190,000,000. What triggered this growth? Likely the end of feudalism. The end of feudal contracts gave people a little more say in their day to day working activities, resulting in more time spent at home, which ultimately resulted in childbearing. This would leave citizens scrambling both to provide needs for the populationas a whole, and to improve the individuals overall quality of life. This resulted in economists, like Adam Smith in The Wealth of Nations (1776), examining the most cost effective method of producing the goods and services citizens demanded (such as clothing and food). It also left others, such as Thomas Malthus in his... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was essential because the population boom that occurred from 1650 1800, where population climbed from 110,000,000 to 119,000,000, created the need for materials food and clothing to be produced faster to sustain growth. Machines such as the scribbling mill, and spinning jenny did the work of a hundred hands, for every single human hand. Initially these machines were met by workers with despair, as one machine in twelve hours could do the work of ten men by hand . These machines also reduced labour by a third, which resulted in an increase in wage for workers and it also worked to increase trade since nations were about to compete with one another for cheaper resources . From an economic standpoint this shift in labour was beneficial to the masses because instead of people exerting themselves to compete with other nations, machinery could just take on the majority of the work, assisting in this movement. This benefitted business owners because they did not need as many labourers, and they could also afford to lower taxes. Smith declares the invisible hand as a necessity for society because capitalism drives people to seek cheaper sources, and in return if you provide that you will ultimately gain wealth. Adam Smith wrote in The Wealth of Nations that division of labour was the greatest improvement resulting from the industrial revolution. Division of labour was beneficial to both the employee and the employer. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
