On our Oceanography class trip to La Jolla, California, we spent a day on the Ocean Institute boat
running tests and observing sea life. To collect a sample of the different fish in the area we dragged
a large net in the water, which the volunteers said they don t do often because it is destructive to the
environment. I found it interesting that catching fish in this way could be harmful not only to the

Even more shocking is the fact that one fourth of the fish caught are thrown back dead into the
sea because they are either too small, or unwanted (Harris, Codur 1). This phenomenon is referred
to as bycatch, uselessly killing millions of fish due to the indiscriminate fishing gear; take for
example the estimated twenty eight million tons of bycatch left to rot in the ocean in 1994(Harris,
Codur 1). Scientific statistics have shown that a sizable about of fish are being pillaged from our

they deplete the ocean of large fish effecting fish populations, food chains, and the oceanic

that fisheries catch large fish until they die out, while simultaneously destroying sea floor life. They
call this fishing down food webs , a practice that occurs in almost all fisheries as large fish
populations become less plentiful causing fisheries to catch smaller fish, which overtime usually
