Comprehension Strategies For An Effective Reading Program...
Comprehension strategies are used as part of an effective reading program to teach students how to
monitor their understanding of what they have read. Additionally, students learn where and how to
implement these strategies to derive meaning and clear up any areas of text that are confusing. These
strategies help students monitor their understanding of the text by making predictions, attaching the
content to prior experiences, and asking questions about the text to deeper their understanding
(Reading Rockets, n.d.). When students understand what they read, they can summarize or retell facts
or stories from various genres (Reading Rockets, n.d.). When incorporating comprehension strategies,
educators should model how, where, and when each strategy is used (Swanson De la Paz, 1998). One
way to accomplish this task is by teaching students how to use a graphic organizer. Graphic organizers
are visual tools that help students organize information in a text before, during, and after reading.
They also teach students about text structures to build memory and the sequencing of events that occur
in a story. Additionally, students learn to identify the main idea and signal words such as first, next,
finally or last to reinforce comprehension.
Independent Practice Students need lots of opportunities and time to apply the comprehension
strategies they are learning. This can be achieved when students engage in reading activities that
reinforce the specific strategy. For example,

The Importance Of Business Communication In An Organization
Communication is held for commanding orders to the employees. Its nature may be directive or non
directive. At this level the individual commands his workers to accomplish any particular task. It is
held to build the relationship between business organizations and its services.
It is helpful for employees in understanding the rules and policies of the organization. Also, it helps to
transfer the knowledge between higher and lower levels. To spread information in the organization is
the main purpose of business communication.
It helps in evaluation of activities held in the organization. It helps to assess the outputs of individuals
or a team of workers in any organization. It is the best source for providing direction. Individuals at
higher levels direct the individuals on the lower level in this way help them to accomplish their tasks.
It establishes trust between employees and management. It stops any unnecessary competition within
departments and encourages employees to work together harmoniously. The result of a team that
works together is high productivity, integrity and responsibility. It also helps in effective decision
making. Individuals can make decisions easily if they are provided with the right and proficient
information.
It also helps to reduce the barriers formed caused by of language and cultural differences. Cultural
confusion and miscommunication can be avoided by regularly training any international employers

Hurt Words Research Paper
Hurtful Words Draft We are not aware of negative words and how much they can impact an
individual. Think. The words you say have the power to end someone s life. The expression you give
them can make them bleed. The things you do or the things you don t do can really hurt people. Words
kill. Far too often people do things without considering the effect they might cause; It s usually said
that I m just playing around , when this isn t a game that should be played around with. Our generation
does not realize that in just one simple word or phrase the conception of words that are said can
completely change someone in an instant. Individuals are not aware of the influence that they contain.
The tongue is the most powerful weapon a person can ever use because if you choose to use these
words negatively you have the power to impact a person s entire life, by inflicting a pain deeper than a
womb, and ultimately causing an internal pain leading to suicidal thoughts, or suicide itself. Do you

The sad part about it is that these scars cannot be proven physically, but they can be proven mentally
and emotionally. It s not easy to identify when a person has been through personally and inner pain is
not a simple thing to tract, but the actions and attitude tell it all. The pain is very similar to a punch or
a slap to the face. The pain of words are real, the suffering of the body and the mind, the aching parts
that continuously feel unpleasant. This long lasting effect is what causes a person to lack in their

Mammography Research Papers
One in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer over the course of an entire
lifetime. Statistics show that individual risks may double if a first degree relative has been diagnosed
with breast cancer (Breast Cancer Risk and Risk Factors, 2016). My risks are doubled as my maternal
grandmother had breast cancer. My passion for radiology coupled with my personal risk of breast
cancer has influenced my desire to pursue a career in mammography. Mammography is a non invasive
radiographic modality performed to image tissues of the breast to detect abnormalities of the breast
tissue and provide a diagnosis. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in woman. The best
defense against breast cancer is early detection with regular mammograms (Bontrager, 2014, 248).
Mammography uses a low dose of ionizing radiation to image and detect breast tissue abnormalities,
and is most often used in conjunction with ultrasound, nuclear medicine, MRI and PET scans.
Mammograms use a low kV and high mAs, therefore radiation dose is substantial to patients tissues.

Dead Poets Society Why does Mr. Keating s teaching cause conflict with the school administration? It
is true that the lessons Mr. Keating teaches lead to conflict within the school. The Walton Academy is
located in rural Vermont. The style of its main buildings is imitation Gothic. The all male institution is
deliberately cut off from the economic and social life of contemporary America. The typical age of its

Classification Of Minority Groups In The 19th Century
Classification of groups and people has been going on in our society, since the beginning of time.
Many people have been looked at as inferior to the major group (e.g. white males). With inferiority
comes superiority, which is on opposite ends of the continuum; those who feel they are superior are
really in need of power and control. As time has passed the majority classified many as inferiors, such
as minority groups, specifically men of African decent and women. Scientists attempted to prove that
differences could be relevant through physicality. This is how they described such differences as being
inferior or being signs of inferiority. If we look back at the 19th century we can see that condemnation
of different groups has been occurring throughout our history and decreasing slowly overtime.
The study of criminal behaviors or criminology can be traced back to the mid to late 18th century. One
attempt that was made was showing the connection of biological links and environmental links, in
regards to superiority and inferiority within the field of criminality. Usually, criminals have been
viewed as the inferior group or less superior group overtime. They commit crimes and ... Show more

The Teachings of Intertwined Texts
Intertextuality and Frankenstein
Mary Shelley s Frankenstein is a work of radical intertextuality, as its very title Frankenstein: or, the
modern Prometheus indicates. No other novel of the period is so imbued with the voices of
contemporary poets: in her pages Mary Shelley quotes directly from Byron, Coleridge, Wordsworth,
and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Moreover, the Creature learns language and cultural forms from four major
texts: Plutarch s Lives, Milton s Paradise Lost , Goethe s Sorrows of Young Werther, and Volney s
Ruins of Empire that, for better or worse, shape his destiny. Thus, it becomes an exemplary text for
scholarly inquiry. Even prior to opening the book, Mary Shelley incorporates intertextuality. ... Show

It includes letters from Werther to his friend Winhelm, about the series of events regarding his love
triangle and the roller coaster of emotions it causes. Werther decides he would rather die than remain
miserable, so he commits suicide. As the creature reads this novel, he begins to develop a sense of
humanity and emotions as he starts to relate to others. Werther makes the creature question his role in
society, and makes him begin to comprehend depression and despair. Many deaths occur throughout
the story, including Werther s suicide. All the deaths were due to the loss of companionship, which
amplifies the role of nature in Frankenstein and reiterates the importance of relationships. This story
calls to question the possibility of the creature taking his own life.
As I read, however, I applied much personally to my own feelings and condition. I found myself
similar, yet at the same time strangely unlike to the beings concerning whom I read, and to whose
conversation I was a listener. I sympathized with, and partly understood them, but I was unformed in
mind; I was dependent on none and related to none. The path of my departure was free ; and there was
none to lament my annihilation... What did this mean? Who was I? What was I? Whence did I come?
What was my destination? These questions continually recurred, but I was unable to solve them.

Essay On Fire In Lord Of The Flies
Fire in Lord of the Flies
Don t play with fire. Fire is unpredictable, uncontainable, and its results are everlasting. Nonetheless,
fireplaces, campfires, and birthday candles, rouse the fascination of children and adults because it is
the universal symbol of human spirit. Fire has an intrinsic relationship with the spirit it represents,
radiating heat and light to create an impression of power and liveliness. The vivacious flames are
always dancing in different patterns, but maintain a degree of constancy. In William Golding s novel,
Lord of the Flies, fire is a prominent symbol of Ralph s hopeful spirit as he lives on an isolated island
with a group of other boys. Fire s recurring appearances throughout the novels demonstrates that there
is always hope in all situations regardless of the amount of resources, and the threat of human
savagery.
In the novel, fire makes a presence during when resources are abundant, and when resources are
scarce. When the boys first arrive on the island, Ralph, the undisputed leader, unites the boys and has
access to an ample supply of fruit trees, shelters, and meat with no threats to his power. Even Jack and
Ralph harmoniously work together, as the narrator described, Together [Ralph and Jack], joined in an
effort by the burden [of the fire] (Golding 39). As a result of the unity and resources, he holds high
spirits for the success of the newly built civilization. The fire burns bright and big in the beginning, to
indicate Ralph s high

Michael O Connor

The wildly popular Harry Potter books might be casting a spell over adults and children who just can t
seem to get enough of the young wizard in training, but some schools and parents aren t quite so
enchanted.
Some schools in the Omaha area and across the country aren t ready to place the books on their
shelves because of references to witchcraft and sorcery.
Our mission is to raise children up to be Christians and to be strong men and women of Christ, said
Vic Fordyce, an English teacher at Omaha Christian Academy. The books didn t match up with
Christian values.
The school, which has about 350 students in grades K 12, decided against selling the books at its book
fair earlier this month and has no plans to buy them for classrooms or the library, Fordyce said.
We just didn t want to put our stamp of approval on (the books), he said.
The three books by J.K. Rowling, which are at the top of the New York Times best seller list, chart the
course of 11 year old Harry, who learns of his famous wizard family past and is invited to Hogwarts
School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
The books are an issue at some public, as well as private, schools.
In South Carolina, parents have persuaded the State Board of Education to review whether the books
should be allowed in the classrooms.

Wisteria And Symbiotic Relationships In The Bean Trees
The Bean Trees takes place in rural Pittman County, Kentucky, and other places across the USA,
during the 1980s. Its narrator, Taylor Greer, begins the story with memories concerning her childhood

Taylor calls Lou Ann, who tells her that she is now dating a man from Red Hot Mama s, Cameron

that they are in fact a family, and Taylor agrees. Taylor and Turtle head back to Tucson as a legally

Two of the greatest influences in The Bean Trees are the Cherokee Trail of Tears, the geographical
trek that the Cherokee Nation was forced to travel when it was moved to the Oklahoma territory from
the southeastern United States, and the Sanctuary movement, designed to help Central Americans flee
oppressive governmental regimes and relocate usually secretly and illegally in the United States.
These two influences serve as the background to Kingsolver s The Bean Trees. The Cherokee Trail of
Tears informs Taylor and Turtle s journey from Oklahoma to Arizona in the novel, and many of the
novel s characters apparently are members of the Sanctuary

The Arguments For And Against Free Trade
Evaluate the arguments for and against Free Trade.
Free trade which is also known as laissez faire has been around since the Nineteenth century. Free
trade is a built constructive thing which allows trade to be easily transportable between nations and
states. Due to this there has been many unfair calls but also beneficial to some. Also it brings about
tension as everyone would like to input an agreement based on what suits them. This evaluation is
divided into four main sections. It will first consider what free trade is and how is operates in order for
the reader to understand the actual concept of free trade. It will then go on to describe the arguments
for and against free trade. The third part compares the two arguments and comes up with an evaluation
on the two. Finally, some conclusions will be drawn as to which evaluation has a stronger point.
Free trade is built on the principle that if more people are freely available to engage in mutually
beneficial exchange, that this will mean the world resources are used more efficiently, more people
will become wealthy as a result. And those countries can specialise economically what they do best
and produce more efficient trade that they don t have easy to them. Economist David Ricardo
developed the term comparative advantage . Which in principle is taking advantage of what the
country makes best and concentrating on assets that the country has in order to preform best in that
product. In affect trading these products with

Graeco-Roman Tragedies
Lord, what fools these mortals be! The world is a tragedy to those who feel, but a comedy to those
who think. A tragedy is a tragedy, and at the bottom, all tragedies are stupid. Give me a choice and I ll
take A Midsummer Night s Dream over Hamlet every time. Any fool with steady hands and a working
set of lungs can build up a house of cards and then blow it down, but it takes a genius to make people
laugh. The combination of William Shakespeare, Horace Walpole, and Steven King run together to
speak on the topic of comedies. We as human beings, being social creatures, have a need to laugh. We
find many things humours, and there are many types of comedies, as well as uses for the comedies we
make. There are many different forms of comedy from many different time periods which all fall
within three overarching sections; verbal, physical, and literary.
The first of these, literary, takes different forms over time. The majority can be described as Graeco
Roman, Shakespearean, and new age satire. Each of these categories could continue to expand with
the different stylistic elements of each, but we will explore the major points of each. The Greeks and
the Romans were the first to discover many of the things we use day to day, including the begins of
comedies.
The Graeco Roman style comedies took two major forms of comedy. That comedy sprang up and took
shape in connection with Dionysiac and Phallic ritual has never been doubted, (Arnold,

Wicca and Wiccan Practitioners Essay
Wicca one of the most recognizable pagan religions today in the USA and Great Britain is also
unfortunately, like many pagan religions, still greatly misunderstood by the general population: mainly
due to the media s often inaccurate or highly skewed presentation of Wicca and Wiccan practitioners.
This inaccurate depiction of Wicca and Wiccans often leads to people lumping Wiccans together with
occultists and Satanists and all the negative connotations that surround those words. Luckily, Wiccans
are neither occultist nor Satanists. Instead Wiccans are part witch part pagans whose unique beliefs,
traditions, and practices set them apart from other witches and pagans.

However, this does not mean we are all witches; in order to be a witch one must self identify as a
witch. Other types of magic can include healing, protection, divination, etc. Also it is important to note
that while all Wiccans are witches, not all witches are Wiccans as witches can be of any faith.
Another key aspect of being a Wiccan is being a pagan or neopagan. As defined by Prudence Jones
from the Pagan Federation International, pagan is a term used to describe a follower of a polytheistic
or pantheistic nature worshipping religion, while neopagan is a term used to describe those whose
religions, as Eric A. Powell states in his article Solstice at the Stones, consist of modern beliefs
inspired by ancient religious practices (36). According to Jones, the term neopagan is also used to
describe all those [religions] who are recognisably [sic] Pagan, but who do not adhere to any of the
standard [pagan] traditions. However, since most pagans today are actually neopagans as Powell
explains, modern pagans are more interested in evolving and cultivating their own practices rather
than trying to emulate traditional, ancient practices (41) often neopagans are simply referred to as
pagans.
According Jones, besides finding nature sacred, many pagan religions are polytheistic with many
believing in at least a god and a goddess. Again it is important to note that while all Wiccans are
pagans, not all pagans are Wiccans. For example, according to the

The For The Nation And Its People Through The Various...
Hosea still had hope for the nation and its people through the various counts of sin. Hosea once again
invited the Israelites to repent for their sins for restoration. God promised them healing and blessing in
return. He used agricultural terms to describe the future blessings and repentance of Israel which
gained their attention, since they had a religion dedicated to a god that provided agriculture fertility
(Arnold and Beyer, pg. 434). God had redemptive plans for the unfaithful people (2: 6 15).
God had three therefore clauses to win back His people. He chooses to act in grace, in preference of
anger. His first therefore is to frustrate Israel over Baal by degrading his power, as if he had none, in

They are breaking their covenant with God by doing what was prohibited in the Ten Commandments,
which summarize the covenant requirements. The people curse (take God s name in vain), lie, murder,
steal, commit adultery, and break all the boundaries laid out to regulate their covenant relationship
with God (Smith, pp. 84). Hosea had preached that behavior reveals true faith and love. He brought up
the many different kinds of issues because he was attempting to teach the people that faith and
community actions are a mirror of each other (Smith, pp. 84).
The second part of the covenant lawsuits include a course of accusations of sinfulness (6:7 7:16), an
explanation of the punishments the nation will endure (8:1 9:17), and a final message of hope (11:1
11). He provides a broad framework of the punishments of the people who deceived God by not
maintaining their covenant with Him. The priests and political leaders are called out for being big
contributors to the broken covenants and destroyed the nation. They turn away from God, and lead
others to do so as well. There is a great deal of accusations Hosea strives to expose towards these cruel
and untrustworthy leaders . The great amount of sins creates the idea that restoration is impossible.
This discrepancy of faith leads to the violent imagery God has provided which is full of judgment
because that is what Israel has done to God. Those who reject God and turn to dishonest and disloyal
leaders will experience his

Book Theif Love Quotes
The Power of Love The human heart feels things the eyes cannot see, and knows what the mind
cannot understand. This quote, stated by Robert Vallet, resonates with all human beings irrespective of
their race, religion, or culture. The Book Thief, written by Marcus Zusak and narrated by death, tells
an eye opening story from the perspective of a small group of Germans who silently, secretly and
courageously opposed Nazism during the time of the Holocaust. While death is featured prominently
throughout the story, ultimately, love shines through. This is seen not only in The Book Thief, but in
everyday life. Hence, Zusak s purpose in writing The Book Thief is to expose his readers to the
exceptional, yet beautiful power of love: how love can save a person, change a person, and ultimately
be everlasting. The bond of love between individuals has the power to save lives. It supersedes the ...

The Pros And Cons Of Fluoridation Of Water
It s in our water, our toothpaste, our mouthwash, and even our food. This may sound like the opening
sentence to some zombie virus horror flick, but this is a reality. The element fluorine is added to many
consumer products, such as mouthwash, toothpaste, and municipal water. The fluoridation of these
products began in 1945, when the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan, became the first city to fluoridate
its water supply and had been ever present since. Some advantages of this process are fluorine aids in
preventing tooth carrie, or decay. Some disadvantages are fluorosis, a change in enamel opacity. Some
claim that Fluoride can cause mental disabilities in children, but claims and studies such as these are
often discredited. Water fluoridation is a very widespread topic which comes with its own advantages,
disadvantages, and a unique history.
Fluoridation of water began in the United States and Canada during 1945 and 1946, with Grand
Rapids, Michigan being the first city ever to use fluoridated water. The 1940 s and 1950 s began the
crusade for fluoridated water, after research done by the U.S. Public Health Service explored the
effects of fluorine and the recommended dosages. During this time, producers began to insert fluoride
into many products, such as toothpaste, mouthwash, or processed beverages. Much of the research
suggesting the percentages of fluoride in these products was conducted before the 1980 s, so many
different modes and suggestions have evolved.

Language, Language And Personal Security
Proverbs chapter ten talks about quite a few topics, to list the moral categories mentioned throughout
the proverb there is diligence, laziness, language and personal security. This proverb comes from
Solomon and starts off with the difference between the foolish son and a wise son. The wise son gives
joy to the to the parent whereas the foolish one brings sorrow. In the same sort of comparison
continuing on with the foolish like the lazy and the wise like the diligent, the proverb continues on in
saying that lazy people are quick to become poor and the diligent person who s hardworking will
acquire wealth. That the wise are willing to be instructed and people go about safely when they have

Ending with language again the godly provides wise counsel unlike form the deceitful tongue of the

Chapter eleven of Proverbs deals with the moral categories of first integrity then judgment, personal
prudence, kindness, cruelty, generosity and selfishness. Beginning with integrity the proverbs speaks
of the prideful leading themselves to disgrace and that wisdom is produced through humility. Godly
people get their direction from being honest, honesty also is the form which guidance is given but only
to those who are good. So when it comes to integrity not being prideful, humility, honesty and
godliness are key characteristics that one needs in order to maintain a good integrity fitting to the
Lord. When it comes to God s judgment riches won t help people on that day much less their sin as
well as ambition these in turn only trap them making them fall instead. Truly only the godliness of
people is the quality that rescues them in implying the day of judgment. So dishonest gain is
something that the Lord hates being something that is not good when facing him while he is angry.
Then personal prudence is explained in when the proverb talks about a nation falling due to lack of
wise leadership, but just the opposite happens that is safety that comes to those with several

Baumrind Parenting Style
Parenting Styles Hanna Lagman Los Angeles Harbor College Abstract Parenting styles play an
important role in a child s development. Diana Baumrind identified four parenting styles:
authoritative, authoritarian, indulgent, and neglectful. According to Baumrind, the authoritative style
works best. In order to understand parenting practices in other cultures, Mexican families and
Caucasian Non Hispanic families will be compared. It is hypothesized that the Mexican families
utilize the authoritarian parenting style, while the Caucasian Non Hispanic parents utilize authoritative
parenting style. All families were given a questionnaire to compare the parent s parental practices
across two cultural groups. It was anticipated that the families would differ in parental styles;
however, there were no differences between the parenting styles within the cultural groups. Parenting
Styles Developmental Theory In 1971, Diana Baumrind categorized different parenting styles by
observing middle class parents interacting with their children (Belsky, 2010, p. 201). Baumrind s
parenting styles influence the field of child development and have been widely cited. In her research,
she developed four parenting styles: authoritative, authoritarian, indulgent, and neglectful. They are
analyzed by two factors: responsiveness and demandingness. Parental responsiveness refers to how
parents respond to the child s needs. Parental demandingness refers to the parent s

quality and affordable health care. In addition, their mission was to improve the health status of people
of African American descent in California and eliminate health disparities through legislative,
administrative and media advocacy (cbhn.com). This effort awarded the organization in 1980 to hold

worked with many dominant figures in the late 19th and 20th century as a philosopher, a

century. Although Russell was a decent man he got most of his ideas from Gottolob Frege, a German
mathematician, logician and philosopher. Gottolob was also a vicious anti semite and proto Nazi. The
Nobel Prize Committee described Bertrand Russell as one of the best spokesman of rationality and
humanity. According to Russell, the value of philosophy is to be sought in the effects it has on those
who study it. The more you study philosophy, the more free your mind become. Russell believed that
exercise is to the good of the body as philosophy is to the goods of the mind. Philosophy keeps alive
the interest in the world. It aims the achievement of knowledge through criticism and self evaluation.
Philosophizing allow those who study it to enrich their intellectual imagination. Russell saw
philosophy as a way of life, insisting that questions have an ethical urgency. I believed his assertion is
correct. One who sought philosophy cultivate the mind. They become self reflective and wiser. From
that point on their mind is free to evaluate the world around us. Philosophy evasion of questions

In his book, Technology, Disease, and Colonial Conquests, Sixteenth to Eighteenth Centuries: Essays
Reappraising the Guns and Germs Theories, he argues that Cajamarca itself could be considered more
of a coup d etat than an actual battle. As Raudzens explains, according to the Spanish chronicler,
Garcilo de la Vega, the battle was a diplomatic conference, where the guest negotiators happened to
turn on their hosts, when they were themselves most vulnerable. To Raudzens, this battle seems to
have proven nothing about the military power of the Spanish, but rather of their nastiness over the
Incas. Another point expanded on by Rautzens is the Guns and Germs theory propagated by Diamond.
To Rautzen, the technological implications of the battle were a greater factor than that of disease, as
disease did not directly impede on the battle itself. As Garcilo de la Vega described about the battle,
the Spanish s battle tactics consisted of cannon and Gun fire, followed by a charge of 62 cavalry, and
lastly completed with armored men on foot. To Raudzen, many of these points are over dramatized in
many accounts. Both the horses, and the guns of the Spanish inhibited a large shock effect among the
Inca, but their guns could only fire once and were few. As for the horses, the majority of the fighting
was taking place in an urban setting, which limited their maneuvering ability. Also the Incas did
possess body armor, though it was not up to par with that of the Spanish s steel. He also agrees with
most scholars, (e.g. Diamond, Ibid, Hyman and Orish) in that the majority of the fighting took place
with swords. He ends by suggesting that rather than Pizarro s victory being one of a technological sort,
it was one in which was more marginal than

Human Geography is not simply the study of the Earth. It also encompasses the people, places, and
things that make up the Earth, which makes it so much more important to have at least a basic

aware of events happening in other parts of the world is essential. Just because it is not happening to

solving problems, making decisions, and forming opinions about current events and politics. Those
who do not understand people who are different than them are quicker to judge and have stronger

because often humans naturally fear the unknown. Without a basic grasp of these different indigenous
groups, they fear them and therefore act out against them with racism and prejudice. By taking this

Wall Street Economic Crisis
Rich s editorial on the 2009 Wall Street economic crisis, which focuses on the deleterious

and the central government, presents at its forefront the propositions that the banks of the nation had,
at that time, been profiting at the expense of the people, and that the financial statuses of the banks and

The Stages Of Non Rem Sleep
The stages of non REM sleep, stages 1 3, are defined by EEG activity. Slow wave sleep in stage 3 is
the deepest stage of sleep. Alertness consists of desynchronized beta activity (13 30 Hz); relaxation
and drowsiness consist of alpha activity (8 12 Hz); stage 1 sleep consists of alternating periods of
alpha activity, irregular fast activity, and theta activity (3.5 7.5 Hz); the EEG of stage 2 sleep lacks
alpha activity but contains sleep spindles (short periods of 12 14 Hz activity) and occasional K
complexes; stage 3 sleep primarily consists of delta activity. About 90 minutes after the beginning of
sleep, people enter REM sleep. Thereafter, cycles of REM and non REM sleep occur in periods of
approximately 90 minutes. Muscle tone decreases throughout the stages, resulting in deepest
relaxation and paralysis in REM sleep (Carlson Birkett, p. 268).
The rate of cerebral blood flow during REM sleep is high in the extrastriate cortex but low in the
striate cortex and the prefrontal cortex. This activity reflects a lack of visual in put in REM (little or no
activation in the striate cortex), but the presence of active visual hallucinations during dreaming

Comparing The Bhagavad Gita And The Upanishads
As any other society, India and Greece underwent changes that transformed their thoughts, beliefs,
social order, and their idea about this world. Most of these changes were experienced during the Axial
Age and the Age of Iron. These periods in history made people question themselves about topics such
as life, the world, death, the soul, etc. People attempted to answer these questions through ideas,
philosophies, and myths. India gave birth to Hinduism which expanded quickly. This spiritual tradition
focused on finding peace and eternal tranquility rather than temporary satisfaction from the worldly
pleasures. In order to transmit the idea to other people and guide them through it, they came up with
different writings to illustrate this. The Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads are popular writings that
exemplify the beliefs and thoughts of Hinduism. The Bhagavad Gita addresses the question about how
a person can be one with Brahman, the universal soul or god, while living in this world. This
document is set as a dialogue between the warrior Arjuna and his guide and charioteer Krishna. Arjuna
is being encouraged by Krishna to fulfill his duty as a warrior and part of the Kshatriyas, one of the
higher divisions in the caste system. Arjuna has to enter this battle and fight in order to live up to his
duty and consequently live free from attachments and walk in the path of finding himself as one with
Brahman. On the other hand, the Upanishads guided all kinds of people regardless of

Ultrasound Is A Type Of Energy Produced By Sound Waves
Introduction
Ultrasound is a type of energy produced by sound waves that belong to a frequency which are
extremely high to be noticed by human ear; anything above 16 kHz [Jayasooriya et al. 2004]. When
ultrasound travels through a living structure, it creates a compression and depressions, and a high

characters like physical, chemical and also few biological effects is noted down, which allows us to

popular and was meant to show their beef patties were much larger when compared to other fast food
burger establishments (Reno Gazette). The pictures of their patties were obviously bigger, but we all
missed the most important question. What is in the beef patties?
Americans consume approximately 5 billion hamburgers each year which equates to roughly 1.2
billion pounds of meat (Reno gazette). Most consumers assume that the hamburger they eat is
composed primarily of meat. However, Fast Food Burgers: What are we really eating? Published a
recent study that analyzed eight different brands of fast food hamburgers revealing a different truth
(Reno gazette). The answer of what our burgers are made of is mostly water. The amount of water in
these burgers was as much as 37 64 percent which is something most likely all consumers would
never consider (Reno gazette). This raises the question; how much actual beef are the burgers we
consume made of? Surprisingly, the meat content was as low as 2 to 15 percent in

American Social Equality
Social Equality has always been a concern of persons living in the United States. One of the main
points was the issue of same sex marriage. Same sex marriage isn t a new concept in the American
social way of life. States used to have the legal power to dictate what the definition of marriage is and
who has the right to marry. In the Supreme Case of Obergefell v. Hodges, homosexuals now have the
constitutional right for them to be able to marry. In America there are two definitions of marriage, the
traditional and same sex. Traditional marriage is defined as a marriage between man and woman.
Same sex marriage has often been a taboo subject in the American culture and since the Supreme
Court decision had ruled in favor of same sex marriage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They have that right to believe that the homosexuals should not be allowed to be married and should
not be granted that right. This is defined through the free exercise of religion, people have the right to
believe what we want regarding our religious views, but we can t always act on them if it interferes
with someone else s rights. So in the instance of granting marriage licenses clerks can have opposing
views on homosexuals getting married. They can believe that they should not be able to have the right
to get married and should only be reserved for traditional marriages, and with their view deny any
licenses that would go against their personal views, but they could not physically reject the marriage.
If they where to find to deny the marriage licenses of a same sex marriage it would go against the

Who Really Discovered America Essay
History Paper
Who discovered America?
By: Deanne Mastrocola
Why is it that American culture today attributes its geographic discovery to a man named Christopher
Columbus? Could it be that he was the first European to claim this land as part of an Imperialistic
expansion or is it merely out of convenience for the history books? It is known that the American
continent was populated by 1000 AD which is long before settlements by Viking fisherman and even
longer before the arrival of Columbus. In spite of this fact every October, we as a culture celebrate a
holiday in honor of the man who is believed to be the discoverer of America. Like so many other

And lastly Viking technology aloud them to sail across harsh seas and reach the Americas before
Christopher Columbus. Leif Erickson was the son of Eric the Red, Eric the Red was an explorer that
became a leader of a colony in Greenland, the colony that Eric the Red owned was later handed over
to his son Leif. Leif Erickson was born in Iceland in the year 980, after Leif was born he was moved
to Greenland with his father Eric the Red and some of his brothers. Later in his life around 1000 A.D.,
about 500 years before Christopher s voyage, Leif set out to discover new lands. Trying to follow
Bjarnes tracks Leif Erickson led his Vikings over the Atlantic Ocean to the new land. Leif Erickson
had drifted by the wind way out of course and spotted a flat wooded coastline far westward, this was
the new world. When Leif got to this new land he founded a place named Vinland, he called it that
because of all the grape vines the Vikings found there. It was later named America, after an Italian
named Amerigo Vespucci. After a few years the colony in Vinland was abandoned after hostile attack
by the native people along with the fact that it got too cold. The settlers moved across the land until
their population numbered 3,000. But in the 1400s the climate changed dramatically for the worse and
the settlement had disappeared within a few decades. Leif Erickson had opened a new land rich with
resources for the Vikings to explore, but for some reason, the Vikings only

Compare And Contrast Sleepy Hollow And The Legend Of...
In 1820 Washington Irving wrote the classic short story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow . In his version
no one knew what happened to Ichabod Crane, however there was some theories. The townsfolk of a
small backwoods town, Sleepy Hollow, just knew the Headless Horseman had come for him. Thus,
making nature win. In 1999 Tim Burton directed a movie that was based on Washington Irving s short
story. In his version everyone knew what happened to Ichabod Crane. He left the little town with
Katrina Van Tassel and Young Masbath after finding out how to stop the Headless Houseman. Which,
is making science win. The film version and the short story version both had the same theme, science
will kill nature or nature will kill science. However, was this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Even though Ichabod Crane saw the Headless Horsemen with his own eyes, he still thought science
and logic was superior. When he saw the Headless Horsemen for the first time he was in a state of
panic, did not know what to believe in anymore. Eventually, he got a grip on himself and says there
must be an explanation for everything, and therefore believes there is a perfectly logical explanation
for what is happening in the town of Sleepy hollow. However, once Ichabod Crane, Young Masbath,
and Katrina Van Tassel went into the Western Woods and found the Headless Horseman burial site and
they saw him spring forth from the dead blood tree. This made Ichabod Crane question everything
aging since the tree represents the bringing together of two worlds. (50:00) He came back to logic and
science when he figured out that someone was controlling the Headless Horsemen to kill all these
people. (59:01) He always managed to find his way back to science and logic. When Ichabod Crane
left the town he had won the heart of Katrina Van Tassel and they left with Young Masbath to go back
to the life he had known before going to Sleepy Hollow. If he didn t believed that science and logic
wasn t superior than he wouldn t have left the

  • 2. Comprehension Strategies For An Effective Reading Program... Comprehension strategies are used as part of an effective reading program to teach students how to monitor their understanding of what they have read. Additionally, students learn where and how to implement these strategies to derive meaning and clear up any areas of text that are confusing. These strategies help students monitor their understanding of the text by making predictions, attaching the content to prior experiences, and asking questions about the text to deeper their understanding (Reading Rockets, n.d.). When students understand what they read, they can summarize or retell facts or stories from various genres (Reading Rockets, n.d.). When incorporating comprehension strategies, educators should model how, where, and when each strategy is used (Swanson De la Paz, 1998). One way to accomplish this task is by teaching students how to use a graphic organizer. Graphic organizers are visual tools that help students organize information in a text before, during, and after reading. They also teach students about text structures to build memory and the sequencing of events that occur in a story. Additionally, students learn to identify the main idea and signal words such as first, next, finally or last to reinforce comprehension. Independent Practice Students need lots of opportunities and time to apply the comprehension strategies they are learning. This can be achieved when students engage in reading activities that reinforce the specific strategy. For example, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many people have been looked at as inferior to the major group (e.g. white males). As time has passed the majority classified many as inferiors, such as minority groups, specifically men of African decent and women. In the novel, fire makes a presence during when resources are abundant, and when resources are scarce. When the boys first arrive on the island, Ralph, the undisputed leader, unites the boys and has access to an ample supply of fruit trees, shelters, and meat with no threats to his power. Free trade is a built constructive thing which allows trade to be easily transportable between nations and states. Due to this there has been many unfair calls but also beneficial to some. Also it brings about tension as everyone would like to input an agreement based on what suits them. This evaluation is divided into four main sections. Another key aspect of being a Wiccan is being a pagan or neopagan. As defined by Prudence Jones from the Pagan Federation International, pagan is a term used to describe a follower of a polytheistic or pantheistic nature worshipping religion, while neopagan is a term used to describe those whose religions, as Eric A. Powell states in his article Solstice at the Stones, consist of modern beliefs inspired by ancient religious practices (36). According to Jones, the term neopagan is also used to describe all those [religions] who are recognisably [sic] Pagan, but who do not adhere to any of the standard [pagan] traditions. However, since most pagans today are actually neopagans as Powell explains, modern pagans are more interested in evolving and cultivating their own practices rather than trying to emulate traditional, ancient practices (41) often neopagans are simply referred to as pagans. According Jones, besides finding nature sacred, many pagan religions are polytheistic with many believing in at least a god and a goddess. While death is featured prominently throughout the story, ultimately, love shines through. This is seen not only in The Book Thief, but in everyday life. Hence, Zusak s purpose in writing The Book Thief is to expose his readers to the exceptional, yet beautiful power of love: how love can save a person, change a person, and ultimately be everlasting. • 28. The Pros And Cons Of Fluoridation Of Water It s in our water, our toothpaste, our mouthwash, and even our food. This may sound like the opening sentence to some zombie virus horror flick, but this is a reality. The element fluorine is added to many consumer products, such as mouthwash, toothpaste, and municipal water. The fluoridation of these products began in 1945, when the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan, became the first city to fluoridate its water supply and had been ever present since. Some advantages of this process are fluorine aids in preventing tooth carrie, or decay. Some disadvantages are fluorosis, a change in enamel opacity. Some claim that Fluoride can cause mental disabilities in children, but claims and studies such as these are often discredited. Water fluoridation is a very widespread topic which comes with its own advantages, disadvantages, and a unique history. Fluoridation of water began in the United States and Canada during 1945 and 1946, with Grand Rapids, Michigan being the first city ever to use fluoridated water. The 1940 s and 1950 s began the crusade for fluoridated water, after research done by the U.S. Public Health Service explored the effects of fluorine and the recommended dosages. During this time, producers began to insert fluoride into many products, such as toothpaste, mouthwash, or processed beverages. Much of the research suggesting the percentages of fluoride in these products was conducted before the 1980 s, so many different modes and suggestions have evolved. ... • 30. Baumrind Parenting Style Parenting Styles Hanna Lagman Los Angeles Harbor College Abstract Parenting styles play an important role in a child s development. Diana Baumrind identified four parenting styles: authoritative, authoritarian, indulgent, and neglectful. According to Baumrind, the authoritative style works best. In order to understand parenting practices in other cultures, Mexican families and Caucasian Non Hispanic families will be compared. It is hypothesized that the Mexican families utilize the authoritarian parenting style, while the Caucasian Non Hispanic parents utilize authoritative parenting style. All families were given a questionnaire to compare the parent s parental practices across two cultural groups. It was anticipated that the families would differ in parental styles; however, there were no differences between the parenting styles within the cultural groups. Parenting Styles Developmental Theory In 1971, Diana Baumrind categorized different parenting styles by observing middle class parents interacting with their children (Belsky, 2010, p. 201). Baumrind s parenting styles influence the field of child development and have been widely cited. Specifically, I will be expanding on the factors that contributed to Fernando Pizarro s miraculous, and somewhat unlikely defeat of the Incan emperor Atahualpa at the battle of Cajamarca. Francisco Pizarro s defeat of the Incan Emperor Atahualpa with only 168 Spaniards compared to an Incan army 500 times more numerous is seen historically as being a success by Diamond. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his book, Technology, Disease, and Colonial Conquests, Sixteenth to Eighteenth Centuries: Essays Reappraising the Guns and Germs Theories, he argues that Cajamarca itself could be considered more of a coup d etat than an actual battle. As Raudzens explains, according to the Spanish chronicler, Garcilo de la Vega, the battle was a diplomatic conference, where the guest negotiators happened to turn on their hosts, when they were themselves most vulnerable. To Raudzens, this battle seems to have proven nothing about the military power of the Spanish, but rather of their nastiness over the Incas. Another point expanded on by Rautzens is the Guns and Germs theory propagated by Diamond. To Rautzen, the technological implications of the battle were a greater factor than that of disease, as disease did not directly impede on the battle itself. As Garcilo de la Vega described about the battle, the Spanish s battle tactics consisted of cannon and Gun fire, followed by a charge of 62 cavalry, and lastly completed with armored men on foot. To Raudzen, many of these points are over dramatized in many accounts. Both the horses, and the guns of the Spanish inhibited a large shock effect among the Inca, but their guns could only fire once and were few. As for the horses, the majority of the fighting was taking place in an urban setting, which limited their maneuvering ability. Also the Incas did possess body armor, though it was not up to par with that of the Spanish s steel. He also agrees with most scholars, (e.g. Diamond, Ibid, Hyman and Orish) in that the majority of the fighting took place with swords. Alertness consists of desynchronized beta activity (13 30 Hz); relaxation and drowsiness consist of alpha activity (8 12 Hz); stage 1 sleep consists of alternating periods of alpha activity, irregular fast activity, and theta activity (3.5 7.5 Hz); the EEG of stage 2 sleep lacks alpha activity but contains sleep spindles (short periods of 12 14 Hz activity) and occasional K complexes; stage 3 sleep primarily consists of delta activity. About 90 minutes after the beginning of sleep, people enter REM sleep. Thereafter, cycles of REM and non REM sleep occur in periods of approximately 90 minutes. Muscle tone decreases throughout the stages, resulting in deepest relaxation and paralysis in REM sleep (Carlson Birkett, p. 268). This activity reflects a lack of visual in put in REM (little or no activation in the striate cortex), but the presence of active visual hallucinations during dreaming (activation in the extrastriate cortex).
