St Augustine and classical education Essay
Saint Augustine and Classical Education
In Saint Augustine s deeply personal work, Confessions, he shares the story of his life up to his
eventual conversion to the Christian faith. His odyssey through life is, at times, one of bitter inner
conflict between his intellect and faith. Augustine s classical education had a profound affect on the
way he viewed the world, and eventually had a major affect on the way he approached Christianity.
He is definitely an intellectual Christian, and viewed many aspects of his faith from this perspective.
Augustine s attitude towards classical literature and thought was at times slightly self contradictory. It

In book five, Augustine spoke of this principle by comparing two men:
A man who knows that he owns a tree and thanks you for the use he has of it, even though he does not
know its exact height or the width of its spread, is better than another who measures it and counts all
its branches, but neither owns it nor loves its Creator. In just the same way, a man who has faith in you
has all the wealth of the world... (V, 95)
It can be argued that his intellectual pursuits further complicated his conversion because he was
tormented by certain philosophical questions that became obstacles to his ultimate goals. In his youth
he was obsessed with counting all the branches, while never seeing the whole tree. At times Augustine
asserted that his pursuit of worldly wisdom was in direct conflict with his journey towards God.
What, then, was the value to me of my intelligence, which could take these subjects in its stride, and
all those books, with their tangled problems, which I unraveled without the help of any human tutor,
when in the doctrine of your love I was lost in the most hideous error and vast sacrilege? (IV, 89)
Despite all of the negative aspects of his education on which Augustine focused, it is obvious that his
schooling was an essential part of his character. Other than Christianity, his education was the most

The Perspective On Demography And Its Effects On The...
Every aspect on demography comes into play when combined into unison from the perspective of a
person s environment. Factors such as age, ethnicity, gender and class are highly important in shaping
a person s environment, where a different combination is met with a distinct response, thus placing
great emphasis on the understanding of intersectionality through the lens of the sociological
imagination. Through social ecology, intersectionality and the sociological imagination intertwines
together to connect social issues and environmental problems as interrelated, where to solve one side,
the other side can not be ignored. To help protect our environment, we must begin to consider beyond
the industry cultures, but on the combination of all our carbon footprint s effect on the environment.
While equality is important, does all the countries have to reach the standard of Western societies,
instead for Western society to meet the developing countries somewhere in the middle. Perhaps
Eurocentrism is not so great after all when its existence is everywhere. The China Price provides an
excellent example of the consequences of the industrial culture prominent in many Western countries,
in which this culture takes advantage of the poor and marginalized groups for the economy to prosper,
as shown by the abundance of goods made from China. The environment in many cities are covered
with smog due to all the manufacturing and its byproducts going on in China, and through this means,

Diversity Interview Assignment
Diversity Interview Assignment
SW 3410 Human Behavior and the Social Environment
Steven D. Sledge
Madonna University
Abstract
The people in the world that we live in are extremely diverse, in terms of the nationalities, religions,
gender classifications and physical abilities. Social workers must have a clear understanding of the
consequences of diversity and difference and the mechanisms of oppression and discrimination as they
relate to human development. The range of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds that social
workers will practice in is huge. Because of this, social workers must have an understanding of the
values and attitudes of a multitude of different cultures as well as an understanding of their own
attitudes and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
English Service Language Director Ms. Hadeel Betti helped in selecting a candidate for the interview.
I was shocked at her age of 31 years by her tiny frame as she approached for the interview. She was

IV. Information Obtained
Ms. Mao describes herself as Chinese of the Han nationality. The Han nationality dominates the
ethnicity of the population of China. According to everyculture.com, China is the most populous
nation on earth; in 2000, the estimated population was 1,261,832,482 (over one fifth of the world s
population). Of these people, 92 percent are Han Chinese; the remaining 8 percent are people of
Zhuang, Uyhgur, Hui, Yi, Tibetan, Miao, Manchu, Mongol, Buyi and Korean (everyculture.com,
2013). According to Ms. Mao, Chinese people who live in the far south of China belong to what she
describes as the South Asia race.
Ms. Mao earned a degree in journalism in China and has worked as a journalist there for some time.
She stated that she wanted to expand her knowledge and learn new things. Her major at Madonna
University is business. She has no brothers or sisters and states that this is the result of China s one

Joel s Social Skills
There are several goals that we have for Joel to improve on his social skills. One objective that we
have for Joel is to reduce passive aggressive behaviors toward others. This would include specific
examples such as rolling his eyes when a student says a wrong answer as this may lead to further
ostracism and increased likelihood of being bullied. Furthermore, another social orientated objective
relates to him being less withdrawn and shy. By taking chances and making himself more vulnerable,
is will allow him to be less tense with his peers. This in turn, will result in more socializing between
Joel and his peers.
The specific goals that we have for Joel in the realm of emotions is to improve his emotional
intelligence. This would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though it can be used for individuals with mental illness, it is also a solid fit for individuals such as
Joel that could benefit from the teaching of these skills. This is because Social Skills Training (SST)
involves the systematic teaching of interpersonal skills through the practice and demonstration of
those skills (Mueser Bellack, 2007).
Joel and his fellow group members will be taught social skills during group counseling sessions. A
large part of this will be taught through role playing common social scenarios with group members.
Role playing is effective because it allows clients such as Joel to watch these skills be demonstrated
by others in addition to practicing them himself (Mueser Bellack, 2007). Once Joel and his group
members practice these improved social behaviors they will be provided with positive feedback on
what they did well and corrective feedback on how they could have done better.
In addition to role playing, Joel will be provided with assignments to practice what he learned during
naturally occurring situations. For example, when Joel is frustrated with other students in the class for
not being able to keep up or answer questions correctly, he can practice keeping his thoughts to
himself and/or engages in more supportive behavior. This may include the avoidance of showing his
dissatisfaction with other students (i.e. rolling eyes) and trying to help his fellow students when they

Types Of Exorcism
Types of Exorcism
Prayer is a powerful tool in the battle against evil and is also a powerful tool in exorcism. When we
think about exorcisms, the first type of demonic activity that likely comes to mind is demonic
possession. Possession is the rarest form of spiritual activity but comes to mind of most people around
the world when we talk about exorcisms. Hollywood has capitalized on this type of demonic activity
and has created hundreds of movie titles based on this type of activity alone. However, the most
common exorcisms are not at all like one would witness on the big screen. In fact, most Christians
have probably said a form of minor exorcism prayer since the Our Father is considered to be one.
There are three main forms of exorcism that is practiced within the Anglican Church: exorcism of
objects, places and people.
Objects Almost any object, other than a holy one, can be infested.
Places Some examples of the cause of unwanted activity within a place, according to the Exorcism:
The Findings of a Commission Convened by the Bishop of Exeter, include souls of the departed,
human sin, place memories, poltergeist and demonic interference.
People If a person requires an exorcism, the most important thing to keep in mind is the safety of the
person affected and the safety of those around. A thorough psychological examination should always
be conducted first to rule out any natural underlying causes for the symptoms present. If it is found to

Latin American Natural Disasters
Natural disasters can have a significant impact on the health of a countries population. A disaster is
defined as any occurrence that causes damage, ecological destruction, loss of human lives, or
deterioration of health and health services on a scale sufficient to warrant an extraordinary response. 1
Several factors play into how severly a country will be impacted following a natural disaster such as
their economic status, access to healthcare services, infrastructure, political economies, etc. As the
world is currently dealing with climate change affecting weather patterns countries in the Caribbean
and Latin America are more at risk now than ever to face natural disasters. Latin America and the
Caribbean faced a year of disaster in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The more developed socially and economically a country is the greater their chance of surviving a
natural disaster due to greater infrastructure, more access to healthcare and medical supplies, and
resources as well as more support for their citizens post disaster. Countries whose Gross National
Product relies on agriculture are left at a disadvantage and can be considered at risk. When flooding
interrupts the production and sale of agriculture a country will not be able to produce funds for
recovery following a natural disaster. Infrastructure in a country also directly relates to morbidity
following a disaster. Weaker infrastructure contributes to a greater rate of morbidity due to the fact that
more people can fall victim to flooding, drowning, and can be killed if trapped under infrastructure.
Following Hurricane Maria and Irma The country that was most affected by hurricane Maria was
Dominica, with over 90% of the island infrastructure destroyed and critically damaged water,
electricity and communication services. Its death rate at 37 deaths per 100,000 Due to their
infrastructure power in Puerto Rico was knocked out entirely and has still not recovered to this
day. With a lack of power less patients who were injured could be treated, several were left with no
means of contact to send for help resulting in many deaths. According to the Pan American Health
Organization (PAHO) The highest total mortality count was in Puerto Rico with 51 deaths, followed
by Dominica with 27 and Saint Martin and Cuba, both with a total of 10 deaths.

Relevant Revenues and Costs
CHAPTER 2:
RELEVANT REVENUES AND COSTS
The primary goal of a firm is to maximize profits. This implies, of course, that each decision a
manager makes is consistent with that goal. Although managers are expected to rely on internally
produced reports, such as balance sheets and income statements, to help them make decisions, most of
the information that appears on these statements is period based rather than decision based. A balance
sheet shows the sum total of a firm s assets and liabilities at a given point in time. If the firm sold off
all of its assets at book value and used the proceeds to pay its liabilities, what remains is owner s
equity: the amount that is owed to shareholders. An income statement is the difference ... Show more

If the decision is implemented, revenues will rise from $3,000 to $3,200, or by $200. The $200
increase in revenue is the relevant revenue. Note that the relevant revenue is not simply the revenues
generated by the additional 100 boxes. If that were true, revenues would rise by $8 x 100 boxes, or
$800. Instead, the relevant revenues incorporate the fact that the 300 boxes that could have been sold
for $10 will also be sold for $8. In other words, to sell the additional 100 boxes for $800, the group
sacrificed $600 on the first 300 boxes. Hence, the decision caused the group s revenue to rise by $800
$600, or $200.
The relevant cost in this example is the change in the group s cost if the decision to lower the price is
implemented. Because each box costs the group $3, if it lowers the price to $8, it will sell 100
additional boxes at a cost of $3, causing costs to rise by $300.
If we compare the relevant revenues with the relevant costs, we can see that the group should not
lower its price. If it does, its revenues will rise by $200 whereas its cost will increase by $300. It will
be $100 worse off by lowering its price.
This can also be seen by examining total revenues and costs. At a price of $10, the group s revenue is
$10 x 300, or $3,000 and its costs are $3 x 300, or $900, leaving a profit of $2,100. If it charges $8, its
revenues will be $3,200 ($8 x 400) and its costs will be equal to $1,200 ($3 x 400), for a

In addition, it also increases student s self confidence. Uniform makes no difference between students

they can concentrate on their school work. By wearing school uniform, students are given a freedom

Vocabulary In The Glass Castle
Young, Jeannette, after burning herself was taken to the hospital by her parents. While at the hospital,
she feasted compared to when she is at home. She was even introduced to gum for the first time. After
that, she was obsessed with sweet, crazy as it is Jeannette was amazed by the gum. Jeannette loved the
hospital because it never ran out of food. In The Glass Castle, a memoir by Jeannette Walls, we are put
into the shoes of a girl with one crazy life. It s so crazy that it s controversial. Some people argue that
the memoir is too graphic and violent to be in a high school English class. On the other hand, some
people say it s fascinating and can inspire teens in different ways. The Glass Castle is a good choice
for a high school reading assignment because it is good literature and can teach student life lessons.
The Glass Castle provides good literature for high school students to read. Jeannette Walls uses a
variety of vocab: eccentric, prospecting, blasphemy, and more! Many of these words are higher end
examples of vocabulary that high school students wouldn t know. This use of higher end vocab can
extend the list of vocab they know. In addition, the memoir does a good job of giving the reader
descriptive and vivid scenes that keep them intrigued. For example, when Jeannette and her brother

Journal Week 4 7
The video chosen for this week s journal focused was absolutely amazing. The video focused on the
future of medicine and the many inventions that are up and coming. It was very insightful. The
focuses that really grabbed my attention was to cure the well before they get sick, personalized
healthcare, and bio informatics (Kraft, 2011). Preventative medicine is the key to the future of our
patients. As healthcare workers, we are not seeing patients until their disease process has progressed
beyond prevention and it is in a later stage that now requires treatment. The invention that interest me
the most was the virtual colonoscopy. The population I work with are mainly over the age of 50 years
old. When asked if they have ever received a colonoscopy, 80% of them say they have not. I think the
virtual colonoscopy would eliminate the fear factor for most patients and would allow us to catch
diseases of the GI tract faster before treatment is needed.

Angels In America Themes
Ignoring the past, allows for a cycle of oppression and intolerance, and is the action that restricts
progress. When Louis asks the Rabbi if he could leave Prior for the better good of progress and the
future, the Rabbi replies by stating he has no solution for Louis, because Catholics believe in
Forgiveness. Jews believe in Guilt, so Louis, as Jew, will suffer by that choice (25). Although the
Rabbi is simplifying both religions, guilt is based off solely regretting past doings, while forgiveness
is based letting go of the previous wrongdoings for a better future. The two characters that identify as
Jewish, Roy and Louis, are seen as rooting all ideas societies that exclude their identities. Louis, by

Analysis on Key Value Stores
Introduction
We have come into the era of Big Data. As (Atikoglu, Xu, Frachtenberg, Jiang, Paleczny, 2012) stated,
the need for efficiently storing large scale data in scale out companies at lower cost is dramatically
increasing. Therefore Key Value Store has occurred in popularity. (Fitzpatrick, 2004) has clarified that
KV stores plays an essential role in lots of huge websites such as Facebook, Twitter, GitHub and
Amazon. This paper reviewed 6 popular key value stores and distinguished primary features,
performance and availability of each. The six systems are Hyperdex, Dynamo, SILT, Project
Voldemort used by LinkedIn, Berkeley DB and LevelDB used by Google.
A key value store database has a set of keys and values, and each value is associated with a key. The
implementation of key value store database is actually a distributed hash table (Stonebraker, 04/2010).
Key Value Stores(KV), which are normally known as a model of NoSQL databases, are widely
deployed for data operation and management in purpose of enhancing Internet services due to better
scalability, higher efficiency and more availability than existing relational databases systems (Wang, et
al., 2014). Because KV stores sacrifice relation model in exchange for fast writing, and they are often
featured with simple methods like put() , delete() and get() .

Religion in Colonial America Essay
Religion was the foundation of the early Colonial American Puritan writings. Many of the early
settlements were comprised of men and women who fled Europe in the face of persecution to come to
a new land and worship according to their own will. Their beliefs were stalwartly rooted in the fact
that God should be involved with all facets of their lives and constantly worshiped. These Puritans
writings focused on their religious foundations related to their exodus from Europe and religions role
in their life on the new continent. Their literature helped to proselytize the message of God and
focused on hard work and strict adherence to religious principles, thus avoiding eternal damnation.

others one day. John Winthrop was a true leader who understood that the difficulties the new world
would present could be overcome through Christian Charity. As such he was able to organize a
community based on religious convictions that would motivate people to work as one to succeed.
Cotton Mathers 1663 1728 Cotton Mather was remembered as one of the most influential Puritan
ministers of his time. Mather set the moral tone in the colonies and led the charge for 2nd and 3rd
generation Puritans to get back to the theological roots of Puritanism that were held by the earlier
generation settlers. From an early age much was expected of Mather. He was the son of Increase
Mather who had achieved much success as a minister and the President of Harvard. Although Mather
didn t follow in his father s footsteps as a political leader, or by becoming the president of Harvard,
Mather was known for his knack for recording history. By the end of his life he had contributed more
than 400 pieces of work on various subjects (Walker,

Computer Addiction
Computer addiction
A disorder in which the individual turns to the Internet or plays computer games in an attempt to
change moods, overcome anxiety, deal with depression, reduce isolation or loneliness, or distract
themselves from overwhelming problems. The elderly, as well as children and adolescents, are
particularly vulnerable because they may not realize the extent of their dependency. In many
instances, individuals with computer addiction may seek help for another condition, such as
depression, phobias or other addictions. Computer addiction is defined as the immoderate/compulsive
use of computers so much so that it interferes with daily activities. It is a disorder whereby the
individual devotes oneself to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A 2008 study concluded that the pathological gambler has clear tendencies towards alcoholism,
nicotine addiction, or drug addiction (Beteille, 2008). Many other activities when left unchecked may
lead to compulsive behavior and ethical conflicts. These activities include excessive cell phone texting
and social networking.
Disadvantages of Computer Addiction
A person addicted to the Computer will spend most of his time alone, locked in a room, with only his
computer for company. This kind of isolation can lead to a lack of social life, and when he does
venture outside, he might find his social skills have suffered. Possibly his only regular interaction is
with online people, and he might now struggle to hold conversations and feel comfortable in social or
public environments. A Computer addiction can create health problems. Some health issues suffered
by Computer addicts are bad eyesight, which is caused by spending too much time squinting at the
screen; poor posture and constant computer use can lead to bad back and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Because a Computer addiction lowers the chance of exercise, and those with an addiction might no
longer take the time to prepare healthy meals, obesity is also a risk. Some Computer addicts risk
losing their jobs or failing classes, because they spend so much time online and are often late or
absent. An Internet addict might also find his personal relationships suffer under the weight of so
much time spent

Causes Of Dissociative Identity Disorder In Tv Shows
The television series, The United States of Tara by Diablo Cody you learn how a family goes about
their daily life with a mother suffering from DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) aka multiple
personalities. Tara (the host) a mother of two teens, Marshall, and Kate, and wife to husband Max, is
learning how to deal with her alters, or identities . In the first season you meet, T an overtly sexual
teenager who s into popping bubble gum and smoking weed, Buck a self proclaimed real man who s
cigarette smoking, and work boot wearing completely clashes with the last of Tara s alters. The last
one that the viewer will meet in the first season is Alice a 1950 s cookie baking housewife. Over the
course of the seasons, more alters are revealed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although it may not have been as accurate as some had hoped, it showed the disorder in a good light.
The show is a fictional comedy not based off of anyone story in particular. The way the series
progressed and lead you further into Tara s life let the viewer feel they knew each alter. Viewers get
attached to each of the alters, as they are any other character. While some of the alters are more
stereotypes than full representations of people, that reigns true to many with the disorder. People s
public facing alters are often very stereotypical, fitting to whatever the host needed to cope with at the
time. In no way does this series try to villainize people with DID, or make them seem like anything
less than human. In the end, they genuinely strive to tell a family s story including all of the crazy
(slightly exaggerated) events that go along with living with

Analysis Of Louise Erdrich s Love Medicine Essay
In Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich, many of the characters face expectations for their roles as Native
Americans and as women on their reservation. One of these characters is Lulu, who experiences
shaming because of her traditionalist view of Chippewa life and relationships with many men. She is
continually fueled by a love and passion that guides her to contradict these expectations, often quite
directly, even in the face of community gossip. Throughout the novel, Lulu defies expectations about
Native Americans and her expected role as a woman, especially in relationships. This can be seen in
her reactions to the government s appropriation of their land, against the community s shaming of her
for her many romantic relationships, and ability to lead her family although she is expected to lose
control over her many children. Lulu Lamartine actively fights against the government s appropriation
of Native American land, disagreeing with the idea that it will improve their life and the expectation
that Native Americans will be grateful for the sale. Lulu s ideas about the importance of living on their
own land were first influenced by her family as a young adult. For example, she is told to sing my
songs and then bury me high in a tree, Lulu, where I can see my enemies approach in the government
cars (71). The United States government intervention in the lives of Native Americans is a continued
point of tension throughout her life. Lulu has a distinct distrust of the United

The Underlying Courage in A Wrinkle in Time Typically in novels there are many supporting themes
to create the storyline in the novel; in A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L Engle a major theme in the

Wallace Murry. The quest the kids go through in the novel corresponds to Joseph Campbell s Hero s

Racial Dichotomy
Introduction What is stereotyping? What is defined as racist language? How is this evident in media
representations of ethnic/race?
Stereotypes are characteristics put upon groups of people because of their race or nationality which
typically misrepresents and denigrates individuals that are a part of a particular group. Robles (2013)

This is achieved through rhetoric which positions non Eurocentric groups as alien. Edward Said
(1978) argues that this process of Western self presentation acts to construct orientalist as west s alter
ego. It is argued the this rhetoric uses binary vocabulary such as the West versus East, despotism
versus democracy and cruelty versus fair treatment. Jaspal and Cinnirella claims thats muslims are
typically constructed as the antithesis of the ethno national in group. This is achieved through the
juxtapositioning of the negative characteristics inherent in the Muslim in group with the positive
characteristics of the ethno national in group. Fatima Poorebrahim (2013) argues how rhetoric of

that newspaper headlines regularly print words such as islam and muslim next to words like fanatic
and fundamentalist which are foreign ideologies to the west. Joshua Roose (2013) from the Religion

Redemption is a theme that is shown throughout many stories including Thank You, M am by
Langston Hughes and A Retrieved Reformation by O. Henry. The protagonists in the stories both

Both Roger and Jimmy had to make a decision at some point in the story. Both made the one best in
their situation which led them to have a chance at redemption. In both stories, the protagonist has a
chance to redeem themselves and in the end they use the chance to make it a reality. In A Retrieved
Reformation , this idea was shown with this quote, Hello, Ben! said Jimmy, still with his strange
smile, You re here at last, are you? Let s go. I don t care now. From that statement, one would
conclude how Jimmy was sure he would be going to jail with the police officer, Ben Price, but Ben
realized how Jimmy had acted. Roger from Thank You, M am , also redeemed himself. One example
would be when Mrs. Luella Bates sends Roger off, Because shoes got by devilish ways will burn your
feet. I got to get my rest now. But I wish you would behave yourself, son, from here on in. She led him
down the hall to the front door and opened it. Goodnight! Behave yourself, boy! she said, looking out
into the street. When Mrs. Luella Bates sends him off, the reader can see the trust she sent him with

Dual Language Adoption Paper
Currently, school districts statewide are required to identify limited English Proficiency (LEP)
students and adopt policies in providing programing which is mainly locally funded with some state
aid. The Office for Bilingual Education and Foreign Language Studies were established in 1969. Over
the last decade, there has been a growth in the number of dual language programs in the US with goals
of bilingualism and biliteracy but many of these programs are expensive and exclusive. (Franklin,
2013) Texas has the second largest ELL population and the largest bilingual education program where
there are 7 school districts that offer two way dual language programs which are offered to both native
English speakers and native Spanish speakers. Florida has the Coral Way School, a genuine bilingual
program, which has been successful, receiving many accolades since 1936. In 2010, Florida had a
population of 227,000 LEP students for which their districts are required to prepare and submit plans

Bilingualism has shown to strengthen cognitive ability. Bilingualism maintain cultures and self esteem
and build strong communities of families that can effectively contribute back to society.
Unfortunately, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 states that it was established to help ensure that
English language learners and immigrant students attain English proficiency and achieve academically
which has a tendency to be interpreted as programs that look more like English Immersion or
assimilation which is something that has been proven not to be academically successful. The goal of
our current educational policies toward education do not utilize such terms or seem to support cultural

The American Education Essay
The American Education
Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, the American educational system has undergone much
transition in response to our changing society. Though there have been many problems raised
throughout the years in regard to what our school systems should be teaching our children, there have
also been many developments.
In the final decades of the 20th century, education has continued to evolve in order to meet society s
demands. The transformation of society has created numerous problems in the educational system.
These problems consist of the segregation of races, religions, social classes, and politics. In the earlier
part of the 20th century, African Americans were segregated within schools. They were placed ...

(Examples: Driving taxicabs and cooking in restaurants ). This inflation occurred because the labor
force put such a high demand on education, but did not expand to accompany this high demand. The
inflation became problematic due to the fact that businesses were donating privately funded money to
the educational institutions rather than the citizens in the communities with higher taxes.
Toward the end of the 20th century and beginning of the 21st century, the American education system
has continued to evolve with some new curricular modifications. In 1992, the ?Children of the
Rainbow? curriculum was introduced in New York. This revolutionary curriculum required
elementary schools to teach tolerance towards gays and lesbians. Other new curricula proposals
centered around sexual education, which intended for schools to teach about family values,
abstinence, and sexually transmitted diseases, and methods of family planning. Another major issue
that the American school system was dealing with was nutrition and eating habits of youth. In 2002
the U.S congress passed the ?Obesity and Prevention Treatment Act?, to improve the eating habits in
the nation , where more than 60 percent of Americans are overweight.
Economic concerns and issues continue to plague the education system throughout the United States.
The ?Head Start? program has been established to provide early childhood education to give
economically disadvantaged children early

Grizzly Man And The Cove Analysis
Final Doc Review
Grizzly Man and The Cove both share a common, fascinating theme: humans relationship with the
wild lives and the nature world. Both films centre on this theme but The Cove explores the slaughter
of dolphins in Taiji, Japan while Grizzly Man focuses on Timothy Treadwell s attempt to live with
grizzly bears. Both have a certain tragic plot about them, The Cove because of the cold blood
slaughter and Grizzly Man because of Treadwell s death. Both choose to focus on one species, for The
Cove its dolphins, Grizzly Man, its grizzly Bears. They may be both focused on the same topic but are

With all these enemies for the activists to face, it s good that we have a hero to root for and in this film
it s Ric O Barry. For years, O Barry was known as the best dolphin trainer in the world, having trained
many of the dolphins who appeared in the Flipper TV series. It was this particular job that convinced

The Importance Of Juvenile Delinquency
Juvenile delinquency is an issue that remains troublesome since it is in direct correlation with adult
crime. While the age crime curve, which is universal in Western populations remains constant,
persistence in terms of criminal behavior seems higher for individuals who start early in life (NIJ,
N.A.). Since girls tend to start offending at a younger age, they should receive more attention in terms
of prevention but they do not (NIJ, N.A.). Selecting female juvenile delinquency as an issue since it
should receive more attention than it has been granted in the past seems adequate. Girls enter a system
that was created by men for men and lacks of appropriate programs and initiatives for a population
that requires it. The lack of gender responsive programs and consideration for criminal pathways make
this issue important to analyze. In the past, girls have been considered as deviant for a multitude of
different aspects, whether it is related to their sexuality, their mental instability or their refusal to
adhere to their social roles. We now see a trend where girls commit similar crime than boys, while
they remain less violent, they have expanded in the participation in criminal behavior. Research shows
that girls become delinquent for different reasons than boys, but those differences are rarely addressed
in the juvenile justice setting. Offering truly gender responsive programming and educating society
and justice professionals as to which pathways lead to criminality in

The Impact of Macroeconomic Indicators on Operations and...
Select three macro economic indicators that you feel have the greatest impact on the operations and/or
planning for your SLP organization. Remember that an economic indicator measures a change in the
general or in a specific aspect of the economy and and you should be assessing how each macro
economic change you have chosen affects your company. Explain why they are important to the
current or future condition of your organization. The Consumer Price Index. Wanting to please
consumers and positing that I intend to start a small business, I would like to know the products that
have the most current potential as well as promise potential in the future. The Consumer Price Index
(CPI) will give me that information since it uses a basket of goods approach that compares the
monetary base of products from year to year. There are really two presented CPI figures in the
indicator: the CPI for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI W), the CPI for all Urban
Consumers (CPI U) I would be interested in the latter. It has its food and energy prices deducted and
are usually presented with seasonal adjustment since consumer patterns vary depending on the time of
the year. (For instance, if opening my store in Winter I can possibly expect less demand in soap given
that people may use more soap in the summer time). The CPI is a thoroughly detailed release with
data for most major consumer groups (such as food and beverage, apparel, recreation, etc.) and

  • 2. St Augustine and classical education Essay Saint Augustine and Classical Education In Saint Augustine s deeply personal work, Confessions, he shares the story of his life up to his eventual conversion to the Christian faith. His odyssey through life is, at times, one of bitter inner conflict between his intellect and faith. Augustine s classical education had a profound affect on the way he viewed the world, and eventually had a major affect on the way he approached Christianity. He is definitely an intellectual Christian, and viewed many aspects of his faith from this perspective. Augustine s attitude towards classical literature and thought was at times slightly self contradictory. It ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In book five, Augustine spoke of this principle by comparing two men: A man who knows that he owns a tree and thanks you for the use he has of it, even though he does not know its exact height or the width of its spread, is better than another who measures it and counts all its branches, but neither owns it nor loves its Creator. In just the same way, a man who has faith in you has all the wealth of the world... (V, 95) It can be argued that his intellectual pursuits further complicated his conversion because he was tormented by certain philosophical questions that became obstacles to his ultimate goals. In his youth he was obsessed with counting all the branches, while never seeing the whole tree. At times Augustine asserted that his pursuit of worldly wisdom was in direct conflict with his journey towards God. What, then, was the value to me of my intelligence, which could take these subjects in its stride, and all those books, with their tangled problems, which I unraveled without the help of any human tutor, when in the doctrine of your love I was lost in the most hideous error and vast sacrilege? (IV, 89) Despite all of the negative aspects of his education on which Augustine focused, it is obvious that his schooling was an essential part of his character. Other than Christianity, his education was the most important ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Perspective On Demography And Its Effects On The... Every aspect on demography comes into play when combined into unison from the perspective of a person s environment. Factors such as age, ethnicity, gender and class are highly important in shaping a person s environment, where a different combination is met with a distinct response, thus placing great emphasis on the understanding of intersectionality through the lens of the sociological imagination. Through social ecology, intersectionality and the sociological imagination intertwines together to connect social issues and environmental problems as interrelated, where to solve one side, the other side can not be ignored. To help protect our environment, we must begin to consider beyond the industry cultures, but on the combination of all our carbon footprint s effect on the environment. While equality is important, does all the countries have to reach the standard of Western societies, instead for Western society to meet the developing countries somewhere in the middle. Perhaps Eurocentrism is not so great after all when its existence is everywhere. The China Price provides an excellent example of the consequences of the industrial culture prominent in many Western countries, in which this culture takes advantage of the poor and marginalized groups for the economy to prosper, as shown by the abundance of goods made from China. The environment in many cities are covered with smog due to all the manufacturing and its byproducts going on in China, and through this means, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sledge Madonna University Abstract The people in the world that we live in are extremely diverse, in terms of the nationalities, religions, gender classifications and physical abilities. Social workers must have a clear understanding of the consequences of diversity and difference and the mechanisms of oppression and discrimination as they relate to human development. This would include specific examples such as rolling his eyes when a student says a wrong answer as this may lead to further ostracism and increased likelihood of being bullied. Furthermore, another social orientated objective relates to him being less withdrawn and shy. By taking chances and making himself more vulnerable, is will allow him to be less tense with his peers. This in turn, will result in more socializing between Joel and his peers. The specific goals that we have for Joel in the realm of emotions is to improve his emotional intelligence. This would ... Though it can be used for individuals with mental illness, it is also a solid fit for individuals such as Joel that could benefit from the teaching of these skills. This is because Social Skills Training (SST) involves the systematic teaching of interpersonal skills through the practice and demonstration of those skills (Mueser Bellack, 2007). Joel and his fellow group members will be taught social skills during group counseling sessions. A large part of this will be taught through role playing common social scenarios with group members. Role playing is effective because it allows clients such as Joel to watch these skills be demonstrated by others in addition to practicing them himself (Mueser Bellack, 2007). Once Joel and his group members practice these improved social behaviors they will be provided with positive feedback on what they did well and corrective feedback on how they could have done better. In addition to role playing, Joel will be provided with assignments to practice what he learned during naturally occurring situations. For example, when Joel is frustrated with other students in the class for not being able to keep up or answer questions correctly, he can practice keeping his thoughts to himself and/or engages in more supportive behavior. This may include the avoidance of showing his dissatisfaction with other students (i.e. rolling eyes) and trying to help his fellow students when they are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Types Of Exorcism Types of Exorcism Prayer is a powerful tool in the battle against evil and is also a powerful tool in exorcism. When we think about exorcisms, the first type of demonic activity that likely comes to mind is demonic possession. Possession is the rarest form of spiritual activity but comes to mind of most people around the world when we talk about exorcisms. Hollywood has capitalized on this type of demonic activity and has created hundreds of movie titles based on this type of activity alone. However, the most common exorcisms are not at all like one would witness on the big screen. In fact, most Christians have probably said a form of minor exorcism prayer since the Our Father is considered to be one. There are three main forms of exorcism that is practiced within the Anglican Church: exorcism of objects, places and people. Objects Almost any object, other than a holy one, can be infested. Places Some examples of the cause of unwanted activity within a place, according to the Exorcism: The Findings of a Commission Convened by the Bishop of Exeter, include souls of the departed, human sin, place memories, poltergeist and demonic interference. People If a person requires an exorcism, the most important thing to keep in mind is the safety of the person affected and the safety of those around. A disaster is defined as any occurrence that causes damage, ecological destruction, loss of human lives, or deterioration of health and health services on a scale sufficient to warrant an extraordinary response. 1 Several factors play into how severly a country will be impacted following a natural disaster such as their economic status, access to healthcare services, infrastructure, political economies, etc. As the world is currently dealing with climate change affecting weather patterns countries in the Caribbean and Latin America are more at risk now than ever to face natural disasters. The more developed socially and economically a country is the greater their chance of surviving a natural disaster due to greater infrastructure, more access to healthcare and medical supplies, and resources as well as more support for their citizens post disaster. Countries whose Gross National Product relies on agriculture are left at a disadvantage and can be considered at risk. When flooding interrupts the production and sale of agriculture a country will not be able to produce funds for recovery following a natural disaster. Infrastructure in a country also directly relates to morbidity following a disaster. Weaker infrastructure contributes to a greater rate of morbidity due to the fact that more people can fall victim to flooding, drowning, and can be killed if trapped under infrastructure. • 10. Relevant Revenues and Costs CHAPTER 2: RELEVANT REVENUES AND COSTS The primary goal of a firm is to maximize profits. This implies, of course, that each decision a manager makes is consistent with that goal. Although managers are expected to rely on internally produced reports, such as balance sheets and income statements, to help them make decisions, most of the information that appears on these statements is period based rather than decision based. A balance sheet shows the sum total of a firm s assets and liabilities at a given point in time. If the firm sold off all of its assets at book value and used the proceeds to pay its liabilities, what remains is owner s equity: the amount that is owed to shareholders. An income statement is the difference ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the decision is implemented, revenues will rise from $3,000 to $3,200, or by $200. The $200 increase in revenue is the relevant revenue. Note that the relevant revenue is not simply the revenues generated by the additional 100 boxes. If that were true, revenues would rise by $8 x 100 boxes, or $800. Instead, the relevant revenues incorporate the fact that the 300 boxes that could have been sold for $10 will also be sold for $8. In other words, to sell the additional 100 boxes for $800, the group sacrificed $600 on the first 300 boxes. Hence, the decision caused the group s revenue to rise by $800 $600, or $200. The relevant cost in this example is the change in the group s cost if the decision to lower the price is implemented. Because each box costs the group $3, if it lowers the price to $8, it will sell 100 additional boxes at a cost of $3, causing costs to rise by $300. If we compare the relevant revenues with the relevant costs, we can see that the group should not lower its price. If it does, its revenues will rise by $200 whereas its cost will increase by $300. It will be $100 worse off by lowering its price. This can also be seen by examining total revenues and costs. At a price of $10, the group s revenue is $10 x 300, or $3,000 and its costs are $3 x 300, or $900, leaving a profit of $2,100. If it charges $8, its revenues will be $3,200 ($8 x 400) and its costs will be equal to $1,200 ($3 x 400), for a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She was even introduced to gum for the first time. After that, she was obsessed with sweet, crazy as it is Jeannette was amazed by the gum. Jeannette loved the hospital because it never ran out of food. In The Glass Castle, a memoir by Jeannette Walls, we are put into the shoes of a girl with one crazy life. It s so crazy that it s controversial. Some people argue that the memoir is too graphic and violent to be in a high school English class. On the other hand, some people say it s fascinating and can inspire teens in different ways. The Glass Castle is a good choice for a high school reading assignment because it is good literature and can teach student life lessons. The Glass Castle provides good literature for high school students to read. Jeannette Walls uses a variety of vocab: eccentric, prospecting, blasphemy, and more! Many of these words are higher end examples of vocabulary that high school students wouldn t know. This use of higher end vocab can extend the list of vocab they know. • 15. Is Preventative Medicine Be The Key For The Future Of Our... Journal Week 4 7 The video chosen for this week s journal focused was absolutely amazing. The video focused on the future of medicine and the many inventions that are up and coming. It was very insightful. The focuses that really grabbed my attention was to cure the well before they get sick, personalized healthcare, and bio informatics (Kraft, 2011). Preventative medicine is the key to the future of our patients. As healthcare workers, we are not seeing patients until their disease process has progressed beyond prevention and it is in a later stage that now requires treatment. The invention that interest me the most was the virtual colonoscopy. The population I work with are mainly over the age of 50 years old. When asked if they have ever received a colonoscopy, 80% of them say they have not. I think the virtual colonoscopy would eliminate the fear factor for most patients and would allow us to catch diseases of the GI tract faster before treatment is needed. Article The article chosen for this week s journal focuses on the history of information technology within the VA system. The Houston VA is the site where I am completing my practicum. I wanted to know more about the foundation in regards to their information technology system. The history starts with Electronic Accounting Machines (EAM), punch card, and the acquisition of the first computer for the VA in the 1950 s ( VA History, 2014). When Louis asks the Rabbi if he could leave Prior for the better good of progress and the future, the Rabbi replies by stating he has no solution for Louis, because Catholics believe in Forgiveness. Jews believe in Guilt, so Louis, as Jew, will suffer by that choice (25). Although the Rabbi is simplifying both religions, guilt is based off solely regretting past doings, while forgiveness is based letting go of the previous wrongdoings for a better future. The two characters that identify as Jewish, Roy and Louis, are seen as rooting all ideas societies that exclude their identities. In addition, banning abortion would not only take away a woman s right to control her own life and health, but also force women to go through with a pregnancy they are unprepared for. • 25. Analysis Of Louise Erdrich s Love Medicine Essay In Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich, many of the characters face expectations for their roles as Native Americans and as women on their reservation. One of these characters is Lulu, who experiences shaming because of her traditionalist view of Chippewa life and relationships with many men. She is continually fueled by a love and passion that guides her to contradict these expectations, often quite directly, even in the face of community gossip. Throughout the novel, Lulu defies expectations about Native Americans and her expected role as a woman, especially in relationships. This can be seen in her reactions to the government s appropriation of their land, against the community s shaming of her for her many romantic relationships, and ability to lead her family although she is expected to lose control over her many children. Lulu Lamartine actively fights against the government s appropriation of Native American land, disagreeing with the idea that it will improve their life and the expectation that Native Americans will be grateful for the sale. Lulu s ideas about the importance of living on their own land were first influenced by her family as a young adult. For example, she is told to sing my songs and then bury me high in a tree, Lulu, where I can see my enemies approach in the government cars (71). While the age crime curve, which is universal in Western populations remains constant, persistence in terms of criminal behavior seems higher for individuals who start early in life (NIJ, N.A.). Since girls tend to start offending at a younger age, they should receive more attention in terms of prevention but they do not (NIJ, N.A.). Selecting female juvenile delinquency as an issue since it should receive more attention than it has been granted in the past seems adequate. Girls enter a system that was created by men for men and lacks of appropriate programs and initiatives for a population that requires it. The lack of gender responsive programs and consideration for criminal pathways make this issue important to analyze. In the past, girls have been considered as deviant for a multitude of different aspects, whether it is related to their sexuality, their mental instability or their refusal to adhere to their social roles. We now see a trend where girls commit similar crime than boys, while they remain less violent, they have expanded in the participation in criminal behavior.
