Internet of Things (IoT): More than Smart “Things”Ahmed Banafa
By 2020, experts forecast that up to 28 billion devices will be connected to the Internet with only one third of them being computers, smartphones and tablets. The remaining two thirds will be other “devices” – sensors, terminals, household appliances, thermostats, televisions, automobiles, production machinery, urban infrastructure and many other “things”, which traditionally have not been Internet enabled.
This “Internet of Things” (IoT) represents a remarkable transformation of the way in which our world will soon interact. Much like the World Wide Web connected computers to networks, and the next evolution connected people to the Internet and other people, IoT looks poised to interconnect devices, people, environments, virtual objects and machines in ways that only science fiction writers could have imagined.
In a nutshell the Internet of Things (IoT) is the convergence of connecting people, things, data and processes is transforming our life, business and everything in between.
This report begins with an examination of the global IoT industry and continues by looking into the Chinese IoT industry and its innovators. The report concludes with an analysis of the possible future opportunities and implications that China's expanding IoT industry could entail for Finland.
Today, the IoT applications in transportation, medical care, manufacturing, agriculture, and other fields are in full swing. Let's take a look at the top 10 hot applications of the Internet of Things.
IoT Applications for Smart manufacturing
The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is a rapidly developing industry that occupies a large proportion of the Internet of Things system. In the process of implementing intelligent manufacturing, it is inseparable from the support of the Industrial Internet of Things.
From the perspective of specific application scenarios, the Industrial Internet of Things is being integrated into all aspects of intelligent manufacturing such as facility management, production process monitoring, inventory management, quality control, packaging optimization, and digital factories, prompting the accelerated innovation of old production models for automated and efficient production brought new momentum.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a term used to describe a network of interconnected devices that are able to communicate with each other and share data. These devices can be anything from smart appliances in your home to sensors in a manufacturing plant or even wearable devices like fitness trackers. The applications of IoT are numerous and continue to expand as technology advances. In this article, we'll explore some of the most important and interesting applications of IoT.
Smart Homes and Buildings
One of the most well-known applications of IoT is in smart homes and buildings. IoT devices can be used to control everything from temperature and lighting to security systems and home entertainment systems. Smart home devices can be controlled remotely through smartphones or other devices, and can even be automated based on the user's preferences and routines.
Smart buildings take this concept a step further, with IoT sensors and systems used to optimize energy usage, monitor air quality, and even control elevators and other building systems. These applications can help reduce energy costs, improve safety, and enhance the overall user experience.
Healthcare
IoT has a variety of applications in the healthcare industry, from wearable devices that monitor vital signs to smart pills that track medication usage. IoT sensors can also be used to monitor patients in hospital settings, allowing medical staff to detect changes in a patient's condition more quickly and respond accordingly.
In addition, IoT devices can be used for remote patient monitoring, allowing patients to receive care in their own homes rather than having to travel to a medical facility. This can improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.
Agriculture
IoT sensors and systems are increasingly being used in the agricultural industry to optimize crop yields and reduce waste. These sensors can be used to monitor soil moisture, temperature, and nutrient levels, allowing farmers to make more informed decisions about when and how to water and fertilize their crops.
In addition, IoT systems can be used to track the movement and health of livestock, helping farmers to detect and respond to potential health issues more quickly.

LPWA - Low power wide area, short for low power wide area technology, using lower power consumption to achieve long-distance wireless signal transmission.
Compared with the familiar low-power Bluetooth (BLE), Zigbee and Wifi technologies, LPWA has a much longer transmission distance, generally at the kilometre level, and its link budget (link budget) can reach 160dBm, while BLE and Zigbee are generally below 100dBm.
Compared with traditional cellular network technologies (2G, 3G), LPWA has lower power consumption, and battery-powered devices can last for several years. Based on these two distinctive features, LPWA can truly enable the Internet of Things (IoT) revolution.
LPWAN - Low power wide area network, i.e. a wireless connection network built with LPWA technology, LPWAN can be connected in various forms.
The principle and characteristics of GSM and NB-IoT
In this paper, we first analyze the principle and characteristics of GSM and NB-IoT, study the NB-IoT coverage enhancement methods, and compare and analyze the coverage capability of GSM and NB-IoT.
Each cell has a number of carrier frequencies, and each carrier frequency has eight-time slots, which means that eight basic physical channels are provided. In the wireless subsystem, the physical channels support the logical channels, and the physical channels are mapped to different logical channels according to the types of messages transmitted on the physical channels.

After the read, you will know, what is a private 5G network and how a 5G private network works.
What is a private 5G network?
A private 5G network is a wireless network that uses the 5G mobile networking standard and is owned and operated by a single organization, rather than a commercial telecommunications provider. Private 5G networks are often set up for use by a specific business or organization and can be used to provide secure and reliable wireless connectivity for a variety of applications, such as industrial automation, remote monitoring, and more.
Unlike public 5G networks, which are available to anyone with a compatible device, private 5G networks are typically only accessible to authorized users.
A private 5G network is a local area network (LAN) that uses 5G technology to create a private network with unified connectivity, optimized services, and a secure way of communicating within a specific area.
The concept of a Private Network has been around for a long time. In contrast to public networks, which are primarily intended for the general public, private networks exist primarily to address specific industries/needs. The difference between a public network and a private network is that a public network serves the general public, while a private network serves a specific audience.
This article comprehensively explains low-power wide area network (LPWAN) technology for IoT.
IoT communication technologies are divided into two categories: short-range wireless LAN and low-power wireless WAN (LPWAN), Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, ZigBee, etc. are belong to short-range wireless LAN.
LPWAN is mainly used in long-range, low-bandwidth, low-power, and many connection needs of IoT application scenarios, the hottest LoRa in the market in recent years is the most representative technology in LPWAN. LoRa is the most representative technology in LPWAN.
Non-cellular low-power IoT technology solves the problem of large-scale and wide-coverage network connectivity for IoT applications, which makes up for the shortage of traditional cellular technology and promotes the application of IoT and large-scale deployment. Low-power wide-area networks will carry the burden of communication network economies of scale in the future IoT era.
What is wireless 5G LAN?
5G LAN is a LAN built in a 5G network, through which a LAN with mobility can be assembled to meet production and office needs. 5G LAN has the benefit of cross-territory mobility, so even if two people are thousands of miles apart, they can still set up a LAN to achieve Layer 2 and 3 interoperability.
Simply put, 5G LAN uses 5G technology to group and build groups of terminals to form a LAN network. When using 5G cell phones, have you ever noticed that even if you and your friends are close together (even face to face), your phone cannot search each other? You can communicate with each other because the data flow to the carrier or Internet service provider's server around the circle.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

How to develop the AIOT ecology of all things?
Written By Calio Huang
In recent years, the construction of smart cities around the world has gradually entered a new
round of development, especially in China, where major cities are actively exploring smart cities
in the traditional sense and evolving into new smart cities.
In recent years, the construction of smart cities around the world has gradually entered a new
round of development, especially in China, with the deep integration of next-generation
information technology represented by artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and Internet of
Things and urban modernization. The city is actively exploring the evolution of smart cities in the
traditional sense to new smart cities.
In this process, AIoT came into being. As the best way to realize the intelligent upgrade of the
industry and give the city new “wisdom”, AIoT is accelerating innovation and development in all
fields of society and contributing to the economic growth.
AIoT sets off a revolution in wisdom and technology
From a broad definition, AIOT is the integration of artificial intelligence technology and Internet
of Things in practical applications. It is not a new technology, but a new IoT application form.
Specifically, deep learning resources need to be collected by IoT sensors, and IoT systems also
need to rely on artificial intelligence to correctly identify, discover anomalies, and predict the
future. In other words, the combination of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things is a
major change in the future application of technology, which will bring subversive development to
the industry.
According to relevant survey reports, the global AIOT market will be US$5.1 billion in 2019. By

2024, this figure will grow to US$16.2 billion, with a compound annual growth rate of 26.0%. The
global AIOT market is growing rapidly, and China has also launched a wave of exploration of AIOT
applications among various industries. Alibaba, Huawei, Tencent Xiaomi, and contempt have all
released their own AioT development strategies to accelerate domestic AIOT. The formation of
industry.
In addition, at the national policy level, the State Council issued the “New Generation Artificial
Intelligence Development Plan” in 2017, which will promote the development of artificial
intelligence to a national strategy; in the “Report on the Work of the State Council in 2019”, the
government also proposed “building an industrial Internet platform”. The expansion of "smart +",
this move is also seen as the opening of the country for the era of all things.
The use of AIOT in smart cities is actually helping to realize the transition from traditional smart
cities, that is, digital cities, to new smart cities. Digital cities are based on the massive popularity
of IoT devices. According to the latest research by Strategy Analytics, the number of IoT devices
in the world has reached 22 billion by the end of 2018 and will reach 38.6 billion units by 2025.
Networked devices enable the city's primary intelligence.
At the same time, in the process of using many IoT devices, huge unstructured data and
information island problems have arisen, which restricts the development of cities to more
advanced forms of intelligence. Artificial intelligence can overcome the challenges of IoT
applications with its powerful learning, analysis and decision-making capabilities.
Through the form of "AI+IoT", the IOT device is given more intelligent features, so that the real
thing is the Internet of Everything and the Wisdom of all things. AIoT is an inevitable trend in the
development of smart technology and a necessary medium for the upgrading of digital cities into
new smart cities.
Building the AIOT ecosystem, the three elements of AI are also the foundation
AIoT refers to the complementary fusion of AI and IoT, so in terms of composition, it basically
covers the core "essence" of the two technologies. As we all know, data, computing power, and
algorithms are the three elements of artificial intelligence, and the three elements are also the
three elements of AIOT.
In the future, IoT's core essence is data, and data is the cornerstone of AI. The ever-increasing IoT
device will eventually digitize all corners of the world. As a result, AI understands that all human
worlds must obtain data from every corner. AI+IoT will also use data as a link to become the next
phase of technological development.
In essence, AIOT is the algorithm's calculation of data, so the synergy between algorithm and
computing power is also the key to the development of AIOT.
In the past few years, machine learning algorithms have developed rapidly. From deep learning,
DNN, RNN, CNN, to GAN, new inventions have been created. While these algorithms promote the
development of artificial intelligence, they also bring a severe test to computing power. Building
an AI computing platform requires a lot of CPUs and GPUs. For example, AlphaGo, which is
popular all over the world, uses a TPU like a GPU-based algorithm chip, but its power
consumption efficiency is very high.
AlphaGo's computing power is equivalent to 12,000 common consumer-grade 1080TI, and it
costs more than 10 million. In addition, the computing power of ordinary computers is also very

limited. It takes several weeks to several months to train a model. The use of high-speed
computing resources intensively and frequently is often difficult to estimate.
These costs are often unaffordable for SMEs. That is to say, under the current tight chip situation,
for enterprises, it takes a lot of money to purchase the required computing power to support the
development and output of hardware.
However, it is gratifying that the country has also increased its investment in computing
infrastructure in recent years. By 2019, there were seven national supercomputing centers
approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology, which were settled in Tianjin, Guangzhou,
Shenzhen, Changsha, Jinan, Wuxi, and Zhengzhou. With the establishment of these seven
super-computing centers, the advanced artificial intelligence super-calculation level has also
helped the enterprise AIOT application and the development of local smart cities.
Under the AIoT boom, the development of AI companies
At present, although BAT companies have laid out and accelerated the landing of AIOT
applications, this does not mean that they have a first-mover advantage on the AIOT track. On
AIoT Avenue, artificial intelligence companies that started with deep learning and algorithms
have precision cut into the AIOT market in terms of strategy, technology, products, and even
solutions. They have squeezed into the AioT battlefield and have a tendency to surpass the first
players.
In the areas of the urban brain, urban planning, medical health, industrial manufacturing, etc.
that promote the development of AIOT, more possibilities for artificial intelligence outside the
non-consumer market have been opened.
Taking the application of AIOT in smart cities as an example, some artificial intelligence
companies have assigned the awareness, control and optimization capabilities to IoT devices with
the development strategy of “building an IoT ecosystem that drives 10 billion smart devices”. To
realize the intelligent connection between the physical world and the digital world, and continue
to create intelligent solution solutions in the three major scenes of the urban brain, the supply
chain brain, and the personal device brain.
AIoT is the transition from everything to all things, and many artificial intelligence companies,
such as contempt for technology, are building the AIOT operating system around the core AI
technology capabilities. This will connect diversified IoT devices in different industries, create a
control platform with large-scale AI computing, simulation, and decision-making capabilities, and
provide customers with closed-loop business value with a combination of soft and hard solutions.
Different from Android and iOS on the mobile phone side, this kind of AIOT operating system
born under the craze of the times integrates the whole process of planning, simulation,
implementation and operation of a one-stop solution. The focus is on the rapid integration of
robots and logistics, manufacturing business. Wait, and the mobile phone is aimed at the
consumer sector.
In addition, this type of AIOT operating system has three characteristics: ecological connectivity,
collaborative intelligence, and digital hygiene. In terms of ecological connectivity, the operating
system is an open platform that not only connects the robots produced by the company itself,
but also connects all the equipment of the eco-partner; in terms of collaborative intelligence, the
operating system is in path planning, optimization, and load balancing. The job scheduling layer

provides a large number of optimization algorithms to adapt to different business scenarios.
As far as digital hygiene is concerned, such AIOT operating systems have achieved the true
physical world and the digital world in perfect harmony, and through the design, simulation,
implementation, operation, integration into the same set of close business, and can be directly
applied to production operations. system. Unified modeling of the solution and algorithm,
systemic support of the whole link, the whole process is organic and integrated, thus achieving
the connection and intelligence of the painting.
Of course, in addition to building the AIOT operating system, the development of intelligent IoT
hardware devices is also a key component of implementing AIOT applications. Specifically, the
intelligent IoT hardware device embeds the smart technology in the IoT infrastructure and can
complete the crawling and analysis of the core data at the front end, which is to solve the pain
problem of the industry segmentation scene and help the user achieve the most stable intelligent
upgrade. One of the most efficient means.
Based on the above characteristics, many artificial intelligence companies have established a
series of industry-leading intelligent hardware products, including face recognition cameras and
face recognition gates, based on urban management, building parks, education, finance, retail,
and other industries. Wait, to create value for users to reduce costs and increase efficiency.
Conclusion: In summary, although AioT is still in the early stage of development, it has endless
application potential and will create a highly intelligent future world for us.
Nowadays, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things and cloud computing, as the core driving force
of the All-China Intelligence Alliance, still need to continuously expand investment and support at
the inter-industry and national policy levels to better promote the integration and development
of each other, and to form a perfect and high-quality The AioT construction system will expand
the AioT industry and provide a strong driving force for the development of smart cities and
smart economy.
