This presentation was given at the KSAALT Al Khobar Chapter Mini Conference in December 2015. It aims to give EFL teachers, who know they must embrace technology, but who are reluctant, a starter on how they can use technology in the classroom. The presentation is by no means exhaustive. You may think that you have better tools, in which case feel free to do another presentation, I will watch with interest! Also it does not take into account any software issues that may have developed since it was given. If I have time, I may write a sequel, so . . . . Watch this space!
1. How to be a Super-Wiz-Techie
EFL teacher
even if you have to - but you’d rather not!
2. Technology! - You either love it or hate it . . . but
Time management
Student motivation
Student engagement
all require that we take it on.
3. There seem to be 3 types of people . . . You either:
Enjoy it already work with it and want to expand and
explore possibilities
Hate it and are leaving the profession because of the
pressure
Somewhere in between, technically ok, but without
knowledge to run further.
4. So . . . What can you do? ~ What tools do we use?
Moodle ~ Blackboard ~ & others.
Built in technology that can be extended more
than you think. (we will look at that!)
Google is one platform that can really enhance
- and it’s easy to use. (we’ll check this out too!)
6. Visual: still and moving images . . . Use them for:
Demonstrations
Visual aids and aide-memoires
Info-graphics to explain how grammar works
Movies to show how to do a quiz, or build a
sentence
7. Audio . . . use it for:
Recording voices and conversations
Demonstrating & guiding pronunciation
Monitoring students’ speaking progress
Giving instructions - homework, quizzes etc.
8. Interactive . . . used for:
Eliciting and getting responses,
Using forms to create quizzes, assignments, and
projects
Conversations and discussions
Current material to encourage involvement
9. Evaluation & managing your life! - you need to. . .
Evaluate and assess students’ proficiencies
Keep your sanity - and track your:
● planning
● teaching
● grades
11. Demonstration:
Embedded Quizzes in Blackboard
Graded assignments with Flubaroo
Embedded Videos in Blackboard
Transforming paper teaching tools into digital ones
Re-think delivery of EFL - or any subject for that matter!
12. Helpful people and helpful software
Teacher Training
Videos - Russell
Stannard
Ted.Ed website
Guy Kawasaki’s
graphics package -
Canva
Youtube! Get your
own channel
Moodle Cloud
(try it out)
Techsmith - Snag-it and

A short movie to show students how to
collaborate on Live Binders using Snag-it
13. Any Questions?
Thank you and . . .
