The Difference Between Common Intention Constructive...
The difference between common intention constructive trusts and proprietary estoppel has been
described as illusory (Hayton). Do you agree with this statement? Consider how the case law has
developed and give reasons for your answer.
In his article Equitable Rights of Cohabitees Hayton suggested that the distinction between common
intention constructive trusts and proprietary estoppel has, over time, come to be but illusory and goes
on further to propose that since the general direction of the development of the law has been to
embrace the principle of preventing and remedying unconscionable conduct regardless of whether the
claim brought before them was originally brought under the concept of a constructive trust or
proprietary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Proprietary estoppel, on the other hand, is a legal bar preventing a (first) party from denying another
(second) party s right in first party s property where the second party has incurred costs in that
property to its detriment . Proprietary estoppel, like other types of estoppel, is not a remedy in itself
but a tool to raise estoppel equity , on the basis of which the court is able to decide on the type of
remedy that this equity will satisfy. Similarly to the need for the element of common intention for the
purpose of establishing a constructive trust, there is a need for the establishment of an active or
passive assurance on the part of the defendant that leads to some form of consequential detriment on
the part of the claimant when acting in reliance on that assurance. Thus, there must be a causal
connection between the actions undertaken by the claimant and the initial assurance on the part of the
defendant. The extent and the nature of the detriment suffered by the claimant, however, appears to be
substantially more flexible than that necessary to find the existence of a constructive trust. For
example, in Inwards v Baker [1965], such detriment amounted to the improvement of the defendant s
land, while in Gillett v Holt [2001] it was manifested in both financial and personal detriment. Yet
unlike in most cases involving common intention constructive trusts, in neither of

How Successfully Did the National Government Deal with the...
How successfully did the National Government deal with the economic problems of the 1930s? In
dealing with the economic depression of the 1930s, it is my opinion that the recovery of Britain was
mainly due to the stages of rearmament in the run up to the Second World War. This is not to say,
however, that the National Government failed to combat the rises in unemployment, reaching a peak
of three million, and the ruined staple industries, they implemented several policies to reboot the
economy and lessen the impact on the people. The National Government were successful in some
aspects of softening the blow in Britain. Faced with a steep decline in international trade the; partly
due to America s protectionist tariffs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the most direct (and somewhat vague) policy The Special Areas Act of 1934, money was to be
applied to the worst affected areas, but this was dependent on their income and the result was many of
the poorest people did not apply. Furthermore, the budget for the act was only £2 million. These
policies seem to suggest that the National Government was somewhat lost on the right course of
action to take, and even then their commitment to not worsen the deficit limited them to gimmicks or
simple lack of effectiveness. They were hardly helped with the condition that Britain now found itself
in. Unemployment figures reached new peaks with the largest being in Wales where 33% of men now
found themselves without work. The traditional industries, of coal, cotton, iron, steel and shipbuilding,
known collectively as the staple industries were the hardest hit; The coal pits of north Wales were
finding themselves without contracts, and the shipyards in Jarrow, near Newcastle were so bad that the
men announced a march to London, taking several weeks. It accomplished very little but to show just
how bad the north of England had been hit. The south meanwhile suffered heavily from cyclical
unemployment, wherein the employee would latch onto short term work, finish the contract and
become unemployed and then find something else. But even then, the unemployment level for the
South east never fell below 15% during the 1930s, in stark

The Canterbury Tales
The Canterbury Tales Corruption in the Church Chaucer lived in a time dictated by religion and
religious ideas in which he uses The Canterbury Tales to show some of his views. Religion played a
significant role in fourteenth century England and also in Chaucer s writing. His ideas of the Church
are first seen in The Prologue, and he uses seven religious persons to show the influence of the
religion in his writing. Although many of his characters appear to portray part of the corruption in the
Church, he does give a small example in which one can conclude that he is speaking in praise. The
Friar, who lived off begging, appears to live a lowly existence, while Chaucer refers to the papacy in
writing, he had a special license from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Chaucer makes forceful insults in his character explication. The Rule of good St. Benet or St. Maur/
As old and strict he tended to ignore (Chaucer 7.) A monk is supposed to have a strong authority in the
Church, but Chaucer explains that he breaks the written laws and precedents set by people recognized
as Saints and highly acclaimed people. The Monk is a lazy, disgusting man who lived a dishonest and
imprudent life. The Pardoner and Summoner appear together in The Prologue. They further illustrate
an example of Chaucer s awareness of a defiled Church. Chaucer provides humor to his description of
the Summoner in that he d allow just for a quart of wine /Any good lad to keep a concubine (Chaucer
20.) This means that a person who disobeys the Church without seeking repentance can easily bribe
the Summoner, in that he will overlook the situation. Chaucer writes about the Pardoner that by his
flatteries and prevarication/ Made monkey of the priest and congregation (Chaucer 22.) This is another
direct insult to the Church at the time. Although the Pardoner represents the lowly side of the Church,
Chaucer balances it out with a highly appraise of the Parson. He appears into the prologue before the
Pardoner and the Summoner, and he clearly is a perfect illustration of the Church, which should be
followed over the other corrupt religious men. Chaucer uses the Parson to show the Church s power

Samuel Longhorn Clemens, Mark Twain
I am not an American, I am the American (Duncan and Ward). Quoting his friend Frank Fuller, Twain
boldly declares himself the embodiment of American living, and in all honesty, with some right to do
so. Twain was born in 1835 to parents John and Jane Clemens under Halley s Comet in Florida,
Missouri and later moved to Hannibal. He would later die under the same comet 75 years later in
1910. He traveled along the American South and Midwest writing as he went, originally moving west
with his brother, Orion, in 1861 hoping to strike it rich in Nevada s silver rush (Ramussen). Twain s

The Anti Imperialist League sprang into being to fight the McKinley administration s expansionist

inspiration to the masses to follow what you believe in. He incorporated these beliefs into his writings.
Further, Mark Twain covered a large range of areas in his writings transitioning from an almost silly
humorist to a serious writer who attacked his targets with much darker view of the world. When he
began, Twain was a humorist writing books like The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,
the book that skyrocketed him to fame in 1867 (Bailey, Kennedy, and Cohen 580). Later on he wrote
possibly his most famous book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which was a heartwarming tale
of a boy who travels down the Mississippi River helping his friend and ex slave escape. In his story,
that was very unusual for his time, he used the dialects of the people along the river, something
unheard of in his current era of writing. In his later years his wrote angrier and harsh works such as
The Mysterious Stranger a tale in which the devil visits an Austrian village in the Middle Ages. As
Twain s career progressed, he seemed to become increasingly removed from the humorous, cocky
image of his younger days (Gribben). Twain never

Reliability Of The Measurement Instrument Essay
4.3 Reliability analysis To evaluate the reliability of the measurement instrument it was developed an
internal consistency analysis through Cronbach s alpha. It is an index that takes values between 0 and
1, used to verify if the instrument is reliable and performs stable and consistent measurements
(Santesmases, 2009). Cronbach s alpha estimates the lower limit of the reliability coefficient and it is
expressed through Formula 2. (2) Where k is the number of items in the test; Si2 is the items variance
(from 1...i) and S2sum is the total test variance. This means that the reliability depends on the test
length and the covariance among its items (Santesmases, 2009). It is important to mention that it was
decided to apply a pilot test to 40 customers, with the purpose of measuring the questionnaire s
internal consistency. In the first version, the test was integrated by 22 items distributed in five
dimensions and after being undergone to Cronbach s alpha validity test, the instrument was redesigned
to 20 items, as is shown in Graphic 4. Graphic 4. Items and dimensions of final questionnaire

Burtynky s Irony In Relation To The Sublime
A resolution to this problem, and a further refinement of Burtynsky s relation to the sublime, appears
in Timothy Morton s discussion of irony. Morton writes that, Irony involves distancing and
displacement, a moving from place to place, or even from homey place into lonely space (Morton 98).
This description of irony provides useful tools for understanding how Burtysnky s photographs in OIL
function in relation to the sublime. Though these descriptors typify many of Burtysnky s photographs,
examining his aerial photographs of the Alberta Oil Sands, such as Alberta Oil Sands #10 Fort
McMurray, Alberta, Canada, 2007 (Fig. 3) will be most productive. These photographs are devoid of
humanity yet replete with their residuum tailings ponds. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Returning to Benjamin, he writes that, Even the most perfect reproduction of a work of art is lacking
in one element: its presence in time and space (Benjamin II) which corroborates the speaker of the
poem s stance that, Meaning takes place in time (Solie 38). Although Benjamin s thoughts focus more
on the ubiquity and lack of authenticity that occurs with mass image production and reproduction,
Bitumen shares some of these concerns, tracing the development of modern proliferation of images
from the first imagining techniques of Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, to the photochrome postcards (32) of
late 19th century, up to video sharing websites. The speaker of Bitumen looks to construct a timeline
of image mediation alongside the aestheticization of catastrophe. Even calamitous weather events,
which Bitumen ties to the unseasonable (34) weather that results from global warming, becomes a
sublime, photogenic spectacle with the ubiquity and quotidian character of modern image and film:
tornados on YouTube relieve us of our boredom ( Bitumen 33). The speaker of Bitumen argues that
these mediations pacify rather than invigorate, and replace what should be fear and action with awe

The demand for corn has greatly increased because of its many new found uses but mainly because it
has been discovered that corn can be use as an alternate energy source. This great demand for corn has
increased many area of farming and production of corn here and other countries such as Mexico and
South America. This great demand has lead to an increase in farmers who are willing to cash in on
these cash crops and try to earn a few quick dollars because of the great demand for it. In 2007 Corn

This would create and elastic effect on the corn market because the huge demand for corn oil will
remain the same but with the discovery corn for energy it has made it a hot commodity and very
profitable amongst farmers therefore corn oil would take a back seat for now until other resources can
be used to produce energy. These farmers are going to slow down their productions of corn for corn
oil and increase the production of corn for energy because it is the more profitable thing to do and its
makes perfect business sense. Now the demand for the corn oil remains the same, but the productions
for it has slowed greatly if not stopped, this means that farmers and corn producers will need to raise
the price of corn for corn products so they will be able to stay on the market longer and have a longer
shelf life until another year or harvest comes around.

The Socialization Of Lesbian Clients
One of the issues that should be addressed in treatment is the socialization that lesbian clients
participate in. In treatment, it is necessary to give any client tools for recovery. These tools should
include alternative activities that do not revolve around the getting and using of alcohol and drugs.
This may be a difficultly task when dealing with LGBT clients especially since there are not many
options for socialization besides bars, clubs, or parties. In Oklahoma there are about 333 thousand
same sex couples per the 2010 Census (The Williams Institute, 2011). Oklahoma has some programs
and organizations that give the LGBT community different opportunities where they can meet other
members without being surrounded by alcohol and drugs. Two main organizations are specific geared
towards lesbians. Herland offers social and educational services that focus on lesbian issues but is
offer to all women (Herland, 2008). Herland is an excellent organization to recommend to lesbian
clients located in Oklahoma. The second organization is known as OKCLesbian. Additionally,
OKCLesbian offers substitutions for socializations at bars, clubs, and church. They often have large
dinner events called Lez Eat where local lesbians can get together, have fun, and enjoy a nice meal
together. Giving clients different choices to socialize in sobriety may perhaps increase their likelihood
of staying sober and finding new friends to enjoy it with. Alcoholics Anonymous is one of the

The New Meaning Of Airline Packing
The New Meaning to Airline Packing
Before 9/11 when Americans boarded an airplane, the only worry that crossed their minds could have
been hijackers holding the airplane, the crew, and the passengers for some kind of ransom, or
something going wrong with the airplane itself. After 9/11, we are now seeing a new kind of hijacker;
terrorists who use the airplanes themselves as weapons against the people they hate. They run the
airplanes into buildings to kill as many people they can with one attempt. This paper will take a look
at what the government did in the days after 9/11 to put into place a defense against terrorists.

This act required airlines to use stronger materials in the construction of cock pit doors, heavier locks,
and video monitors for pilots to view what is happening in the cabin. Putting in wireless devices for

the airline Jet Blue had these requirements in every airplane they own. Putting crew and passengers
safety before their profit. This act also gave to the Under Secretary of Transportation the job
recruiting, training, and providing weapons for air marshals for each flight. As an elite group, highly
trained, the air marshals will set with the passengers and have the advantage of knowing what is going
on inside the cabin at all times.
Carol Hallett, head of the Airline Transportation Association said The wisest investment in improving
security is hiring more air marshals because they are highly trained to provide professional protection.
(Renna, 2003)
This protection is costing the airlines approximately $3,000 per air marshal, per flight. Requiring two
air marshals in each plane.
Part of the Aviation and Transportation Security Act gave the Under Secretary of Transportation the
job to recruit, train, and air pilots using similar training programs that were used for air marshals. The
program for the pilots is done on a volunteer basis program only. In

INTUITION
Abstract
Intuition has rarely been given the credit it deserves, even when numerous experiments over the past
decades has shown it to be a complex and detailed subconscious process, rather than the pseudo
science many still believe it to be. Despite the success of intuition as a decision maker, the ideology
that we should trust logic first and hunches second often wins out. While intuition has been known to
lead to mistakes, known as Warren Harding Errors, it s often more reliable than logical, thought out
problem solving. Ignorance as to the true nature of intuition has led to a societal ideology that values
the conscious over the subconscious, and regards intuition as a lesser emotion that isn t to be trusted.
However, there is, in fact, science to support the reliability of intuition. Gut feelings are a result of the
ventromedial prefrontal cortex, located directly behind the nose, which sorts and prioritizes
information, and runs all relevant information through the subconscious, which uses an analyzation of
past events and calculates the best course of action. This process manifests as intuition.

The Theme of Social Responsibility in Victorian England Essay
How does dickens explore the theme of social responsibility in
Victorian England?
Charles dickens wrote A Christmas Carol for a certain reason, and that reason was that he wanted to
make people aware of the terrible situation the children of the poor were in. He visited a school in
1843 and was appalled by what he saw there. It was a school for the poorest children to teach them
basic reading and writing skills. The children s employment commission had also shocked him. At
first dickens had the idea of writing a pamphlet called an appeal to the people of England on behalf of
the poor mans child but soon realised that seen as he was the most popular novelist of the time people
would take much more notice he wrote about the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Up until the second half of the 19th century people were still drinking water from the Thames in

Dr. John to find that all the victims of the cholera outbreak was connected with the same water pump.

How Does Temperature Affect The Height Of Basketball
Based on the surface a basketball collides with, it does affect the height of the bounce of the basketball
when dropped from one meter. In this case the surfaces that we investigated were a table top, the

affected its height because when a basketball bounces off of a surface, some of its energy is absorbed
by that surface. More energy is absorbed by some surfaces more than others. A soft surface, such as

A World Of Difference In James Sire s The Universe Next Door
A World of Difference (Introduction): In the book The Universe Next Door written by James Sire
begins with a brief explanation of what a Worldview is. As stated in the book by Sire, The essence of a
worldview lies deep in the inner recesses of the human self. A Worldview involves the mind, but it is
first of all a commitment, a matter of the soul. It is spiritual orientation more than it is a matter of
mind alone (pg.20, Sire). The author states that it is from the heart that all one s thoughts and actions
proceed. The basis of the introduction of Sire s book is answering the seven basic questions of
worldview, including what is prime reality the really real? what is the nature of external reality, that is,
the world around us? what is a human being? what happens to a person after death? Why is it possible
to know anything at all? And finally, how do we know what is right and wrong? (pg.22). Also, the
author asserts that by being able to answer some or many of the seven worldview questions that an
individual has, then people can form their own worldviews for themselves. Sire discusses nine
different worldviews by answering those seven questions, explaining them and depicting what each
worldview system believes and does not. Thus, Sire closes the introduction of the book with two
questions, Which is your universe? And Which are the universes next door? (pg. 24 Sire). A Universe

Business management is a diverse field with lots of different ways on how to manage either someone

of the 1940 s. This film, directed by Tay Garnett, was originally released in 1946. In this production,
the narrator is also the main character: a handyman named Frank Chambers. Frank is eventually
employed by a middle aged diner owner named Nick Smith. Nick has a wife named Cora who
eventually plays the role of the femme fatale in the film. During the movie, Frank falls in love with
Cora in his time working at the Twin Oakes diner. As their relationship progresses, Cora realizes that
she wants to make something of herself (www.eppc.org). She seductively convinces Frank to do
almost anything that she wants him to do. Therefore, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Post World War II culture in the U.S was considered a very dark period as citizens were recovering
from actions of the war. However, citizens in America liked the fact that film noirs had reflected the
harsh point of view of everyday people in the streets and they craved to see real actors in real settings,
opposed to the studio built streets that they had watched previously in the 1930 s
(www.librarypoint.org). There was also a constant fear in the heart of most Americans as the Cold War
was present, and nuclear threats held their presence from the Soviet Union. This sense of pessimism
and mistrust in the American culture of the time had directly been portrayed in the U.S film industry in
the 1940 s as, Americans wanted a harsh view of society from the perspective of everyday people on
the streets (www.librarypoint.org). Therefore, The Postman Always Rings Twice, is a perfect example
of how Hollywood displayed these characteristics through the corrupt, unhappy fate of Frank
Chambers and Cora Smith.
In the film, The Postman Always Rings Twice, Frank Chambers stars as the classic anti hero .
Displayed fairly early in the story, Frank does indeed display many of the typical characteristics of an
anti hero in classic film noirs. In the first instance, Frank sees Nick driving back to the diner as he is
looking out the window with Cora. Nick almost runs into a semi while they are watching because he is
intoxicated. Frank reacts to Nick s near death

Patient Education Essay
According to Healthy People 2012 there are more then 800,000 new cases of diabetes each year, with
the numbers on the rise. With this in mind, Healthy People 2012 has identified diabetes as their
number five focus area. In order to reach their goal of improving the quality of life for people with
diabetes they have identified diabetes teaching as their number one objective. Furthermore, in order to
reduce the number of complications of diabetes, Healthy People 2012 has identified foot ulcers as
their ninth objective. Through patient education Healthy People 2012 hopes to reduce the number of
foot ulcers in people with diabetes, as diabetes is the number one cause of nontraumatic amputations

factors involved it becomes obvious that J.L. is a diabetic patient in need of foot care teaching, in
order to prevent further complications. After identification of a patient teaching need the next step in
the teaching process is establishing a measurable goal. Teaching goals are broad in scope and set down
what is expected as the final outcome of the teaching and learning process (Wilkinson Van Leuven,
2007, p. 538). In order to achieve a high level of standard, teaching goals need to be specific,
measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. For our example, the teaching goal for J.L. and his
diabetic foot care is as follows: Client is able to state five things he can do to prevent diabetic foot
complications by the end of the teaching session implemented on Sunday January 24, 2012.
Specifically, the five items J.L. will identify are to monitor and manage his diabetes, inspect feet daily,
wash feet with warm water while drying between toes and apply moisturizing cream to feet daily (not
between toes), avoid walking barefoot or with unfitted shoes, and calling the doctor should he notice
any changes in his feet. In this case the level of prevention used, when implementing the diabetic foot
care teaching, is tertiary prevention. This intervention begins once the disease if obvious: the aim is to

Urban Expansion And Its Effect On Families
Report urban expansion
1.0 Introduction
1.1 Aims
Urban expansion and effects.
1.2 Parameters
Inequality, traffic problems, waste, housing, pollution and suicides.
1.3 Definition
Urbanisation is the increase proportion of people living in towns and cities. It is the outcome of social,
economic and political developments that lead to urban concentration and growth of large cities,
changes in land use and transformation from rural to metropolitan pattern of organization and
governance.
Urban expansion is part of urbanisation. It is defined as low density residential and commercial
development on undeveloped land. (CEF, 2013)
1.4 Thesis
This report will address problems brought by rapid urban expansion, especially in Port au Prince and
Shanghai, with the direct impact on families and strategies to overcome the problems.
2.0 Problems Impacts
2.1 Port au Prince
The average annual rate of urban population change in Haiti is 2.4%. (World Urbanization Prospects:
The 2014 Revision). Being the capital of Haiti, Port au Prince has experienced rapid urban expansion
in recent years. However, problems in different aspects of life have aroused people s concerns.
2.1.1 Inequality: 40% of the total population in Haiti has access to less than 6% of the national
income, whereas the richest Haitians (around 1%) control more than 26% of the aggregate property.
Most importantly, the gap between rich and poor is still expanding. (IFAD, 2015)

Plato s Theory of Knowledge
Plato s Theory of Knowledge
What appears to be so to me is true for me, and what appears to be so to you is true for you. It follows
that everyone s perceptions are equally true. This of course is the extreme form of relativism that
Protagoras claims when he asserts that man is the measure of all things in regards to truth. It seems
that if all perceptions (e.g. judgments and beliefs) are equally true, there can be no room for expertise.
But what is Protagoras to say of our natural inclination that such things as wisdom and the wise really
do exist among individuals? If Protagoras relativism is to be accepted, he must explain how expertise
is possible. Protagoras does not deny that some men are wiser than others, but he disagrees that ...

In this picture we do not say that the new state of mind (healthy Socrates) once the drugs have been
administered is truer or wiser than the original state of mind (sick Socrates), rather we say it is better.
It is our common misconception of equating good states with true things, rather than equating good
states as better (not truer); as Socrates puts it in behalf of Protagoras, ...The [good] things which
appear to [one] are what some people, who are still at a primitive stage, call true ; my position
however, is that the one kind are better than the others, but in no way truer (167b). It seems that we are
able to allow expertise in light of the Measure Doctrine simply by arguing that the doctor s wisdom
does not have any command of objective truth, rather what he is doing is simply affecting change for
the better or good with respect to the perceiver. This is controversial, and we will see why later when
Socrates brings up the kind of role expertise plays in emergency situations and judgments about the
future. But for now, we will look at another example that is meant to bolster Protagoras defense.
The wise politician is said to be the one who affects change by making wholesome things seem just
and instead of pernicious. Whatever in any city is regarded as just and admirable is just and admirable,

Essay about Indentured Servant and the Company Town
A labourer under contract to work for an employer for a specific amount of time is a bonded labourer
also known as a Indentured Servant. Typically the employer provided little or no monetary pay, but
was responsible for accommodation, food, other essentials, training and when applicable passage to a
new country. Upon completion of the term of the contract the labourer sometimes received a lump
sum payment such as a parcel of land and was free to farm or take up trade of his own. In other words
indentured servants are very poor people obligated to forced labor for a fixed number of years, often
in exchange for passage to the New World or other benefits. The term comes from the medieval
English indenture of retainer a contract written in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After indentures were forbidden, the passage had to be prepaid, giving rise to the inhumane conditions
of Irish coffin ships in the second half of the 19th century. Indentured Servitude was used by the
Hudson s Bay Company to staff the coal mines around Nanaimo well into the late 1800 s.
The Company Town
The company town was an economic institution that was part of the market for labor. In a company
town a single firm provided its employees with goods and services, hired police, collected garbage,
dispensed justice, and answered (or failed to answer) complaints from residents. The economy of the
company town was totally privatized community services that today are provided by municipal
governments were provided by the profit maximizing firm, which ran the company town. Property
rights were defined in such a way that companies could exclude competition by other firms that
wished to provide goods and services to their employees.
Although company towns were most closely associated with the coal mining industry it should be
noted that they existed in a number of other industries. For example, Homestead, Pennsylvania was a
company town situated next to the Homestead Steel Mill. Similarly, Pullman, Illinois was a company
town for workers employed at the factory that produced Pullman railroad cars. Because of large and
persistent labor struggles associated with the coal industry the focus of interest, both historical and
scholarly, has been on coal company

Essay On Air Awareness
Currently there is a large amount of research based on the use of the system and its benefits, although
there is nothing in current research that shows the saturation of awareness in the aviation community.
Some of the current research highlights the great benefits of the system, including the mass gathering
of data to identify specific problems within the safety sector. Such as Cardosi, Falzarano, Han (2008)
research based on ASRS reports, where they analyzed 386 reports from the program database and
gathered data which yielded a lot of results on the contributing factors of pilot controller
communication errors. The data they gathered was directly based of the ASRS self reports submitted

By providing the users with its benefits of confidentiality and partial immunity, it draws people in to
report the problems that will be used for future identifications and research. Several researchers have
already used the data provided by the system to create further safety information within the aviation
field, although the amount of data the gathered was rather limited and needed a further boost, which
the ASRS system can provide if the majority of personnel are aware of its existence. Furthermore, a
majority of the research literature so far has all been based on the data that the ASRS has stored, but
almost no research has been done on the ASRS awareness within the aviation community. If the
proper research is done on the ASRS and the knowledge of it of the aviation sector, the field would
view a greatly increased input of data and create a truly preventative system that create an overall
safer environment. The current state of awareness of the ASRS system within the aviation community
is severely inconspicuous and under used. Through the proposed research, additional data will be
collected to clearly identify a percentage of people that are aware of the ASRS program and know how
to utilize it.
The proposed hypothesis of this research project is that the ASRS reporting system has a large gap in
the awareness and identification of the current system. To identify

Pros And Cons Of No-Platforming
In Thomas Hobbes s famous work, The Leviathan he created his famous social contract theory , that
states individuals will need to give up some of their own personal autonomy to ensure the security of
the state. Looking at this social contract as a spectrum, with security on one end and liberty on the
other, one must find a balance between the two. In 2017 there are still on going debates where people
want their society to fall on that spectrum, some would rather have more liberty and others more
security. In 2016 the Free Speech Debate put out a video debating whether no platforming should be
practised at universities. No platforming can be defined a strategy that argues that certain peoples
should not be given a platform to speak in a certain social space due to their rhetoric constituting hate
speech . Both sides of the debate, the pro no platforming and the anti no platforming teams, gave great
points on how serious this issue is, and that there can be real life benefits and consequences on either
side of the debate.
Pro No Platforming The main argument of No Platforming is that there is an unfair power dynamic at
play. A platform gives speakers a medium to amplify their message without having to debate against
protestors; this unfair as it gives those already in power, that have the resources to platform, an
advantage in that they have a greater ability to get their point across, creating a cycle that perpetuates
the dominant group of societies message and

Dating Anxiety
Have you ever been really stressed about something? Think of the time when you have been the most

about dating is that you get seriously stressed out for one lousy night. It s enough to turn a sane mind

researchers ran an experiment to test whether the doll did influence young girls on their body image.
There was a survey that was conducted with women that played with Barbie s when they were

1.2 Statement of the problem
Agriculture has always been the backbone of Ethiopia s economy. Yet, lifting millions of Ethiopians
out of poverty requires transformation from centuries old subsistence agriculture to dynamic,
technology driven market oriented production. This can only happen if the market itself functions in
such a way as to serve the needs of all concerned stakeholder of the market.
Ethiopian coffee marketing system is also on age old tradition. To date, coffee markets have been
characterized by high cost and high risks of transacting, forcing much of Ethiopia into global isolation.
Coffee trading is done on the basis of auction system which backed by poor technology and clearing
and payment system which drives up the processing and marketing cost and these leads to high
consumer price this forcing coffee exporter to be powerless into global market. In addition to his small
scale farmers come to the market with little information and are at the mercy of coffee supplier or
collector in the nearest and only market they know, unable to negotiate better prices or reduces their
market risks.

intriguing as well as slightly concerning due to the predominant language of Québec being French, a
language which I speak very little of. For me, as I read the Itinerary of the trip the one visit that stood
out was the Citadel. The Citadel intrigued me due to the fact that Québec City was one of only two
cities in North America that is still surrounded by fortifications, which meet at the strategically located
military base. Also the idea that this fortress had at one point in time allowed Canada to control the St.

crime neighborhoods. The worst case scenario for the driver is being killed; the worst case scenario

professionals go to work knowing their life is at risk (firefighters, police officers, and those in the

employees to deliver to areas where they may be killed. The article states that several pizza delivery

with unemployment. Unemployment is defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as people who do not
have a job, have actively looked for work in the past four weeks, and are currently available for work.
It talks about how people leave the labor force when they retire, go to school, have a disability that
keeps them from working, or have family responsibilities. It states that the BLS does not report the
real unemployment rate. BLS measures unemployment through monthly household surveys which is
called current population survey. It also talks about how unemployment statistics used. They are used
by the government to gauge the health of the economy. If the rate gets high around six percent, the
government will try to stimulate the economy and create jobs. The causes of unemployment are
caused by economy slowing down and businesses forced to reducing payroll expenses. The
consequences of unemployment are destructive to the economy. According to Chandler (2015), it talks
about how Mississippi s unemployment rate continue going down.

business strategy with its employees is called talent management, and it encompasses aligning the
right employee with the right position in the organization. Talent management is a business strategy
and must be fully incorporated within all of the employee connected practices of the organization.

Determine the key components of talent management, including identifying, assessing, and
developing talent. Talent management consist of six components that, when implemented strategically,
combine to keep an organization on the leading edge. These components are: Strategic Employee
Planning, Talent Acquisition and Retention, Performance Management, Learning and Motivating,
Career Development, and Succession Planning. Strategic Employee Planning is the practice of
developing your organizational goals and strategic plan. It is also knowing how to achieve your goals
and implement the plan. Another responsibility of employee planning is identifying the key roles and
personnel who will assist you in attaining them. Talent Acquisition and Retention is hiring new talent
into your organization and recognizing and cultivating talent you already have in the organization.
Promoting from within your organization is more cost effective and encourages employee engagement
and loyalty. Performance Management is when the right person is aligned with the right role and
position within the organization. Its end goal is to make sure that roles align with your business
strategy to achieve its goals. It develops goals for success, supports employee development, and
moves the organization in a positive direction. Learning and Motivating sounds like two components
but they actually go hand in hand. Learning is

Why Do Animals Lack Intelligence
Descartes posits that animals lack intelligence, a characteristic that is distinctly a human possession
(p.30, Adam Tannery). By this he means their ability to be rational, to exercise reason and to speak;
the act of putting words in an orderly fashion to express thoughts. While the deaf and the dumb lack
this possession, they have the ability to speak through a different language, sign language (p.31).
Parrots in contrast, have the ability to speak but lack the comprehension to express higher levels of
thought (p.31). Language is a learnt behavior. If Descartes thought of language as a measure of
intelligence, then Washoe a chimp who has been taught to communicate through American Sign
Language (ASL) would be a refutable example of this statement. Critics argued that the chimps were
only taught to mimic, but Washoe shocked researchers when she taught her adopted son Loulis about
50 ASL signs without researchers intervention2. Surely, this is evidence that animals ... Show more

They have created niches in which they can successfully reproduce and propagate their genes to the
next generation in optimal ways that other animals cannot. This is true for artificial insemination and
genetic sequencing of DNA to select against deleterious genotypes and then inseminate a female with
this optimal zygote. They have also created defense mechanism that has nothing to do with adaptation
in a defense against deadly animals; these include tranquilizers and even guns. With all that being
said, they do not need to concern themselves with developing mechanisms to live in the wild and
surviving against predators. These concerns were the concerns of their ancestors and their non human
counterparts. Humans are now concerned with understanding the complexities of their creation and so
some create religion as means to express that, which cannot be understood through science or tangible
matters on

Understanding Psychoanalysis According to Freud
Picture an elderly man sitting on an chair with pad and pen in hand listening to a patient lying on a
couch recalling their dream. This elderly man is a psychoanalyst, his name, Sigmund Freud. Freud
was a Psychologist who produced a theory on personality called the Psychoanalytic perspective. This
perspective proposes that personality is the result of animal like driving forces that often conflict with
one another and sometimes are unconscious. All references and terminology regarding Freud are taken
from Ciccarelli, S.K., White N.J.(2013). Psychology an exploration (2nd edition) New Jersey: Pearson

Sixth, to see a woman in a dream, in a negative sense, represents guilt and/or temptation. Seventh, to
dream about an old hag, in a negative sense, represents the devouring mother.to dream of a Hatchet is
symbolizing destruction, hostility, and the frustrations that I am experiencing. Lastly eight, to dream
of a Hatchet is symbolizing destruction, hostility, and the frustrations that I am experiencing. In light
of that, I will now connect the dream to my current life experience. Based off the latent content of the
dream plus my current life experience, my id is frustrated because it is not being gratified because my
desire to be entirely independent is not being fulfilled. This is made evident by the mud, how it is
constantly holding on to me so that I can t take more steps to move forward. Since I still live under my
parents roof I feel that I cannot fully grow up under their authority, much like how I had difficulty
trekking through the mud. My ego is being challenged as I must negotiate between the desire of the id
to be entirely independent, and the desire of my home community for me to remain dependent and
under their authority. The feeling at the beginning of the dream that someone is chasing, the hag, me
and my brother indicates that I fear the demands of my home community, represented by the hag, and
that I don t believe that the situation is negotiable or conquerable. Then my

Lincoln Movie Analysis
Slavery was a massive issue many African Americans faced during the civil war. The film Lincoln,
directed by Steven Spielberg, is a fantastic historical movie. The film focuses on the life of Abraham
Lincoln during his second Presidential term. President Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the
United States at the time. Lincoln was honored by many because he advocated for the African
American people. Lincoln wished to pass the thirteenth amendment in the House of Representatives,
which abolishes slavery. He felt as though slavery was immortally wrong. Slavery was an issue for all
Africans American. Children were sold to owners for profit no matter the age. Passing this law was a
challenging issue for Lincoln and required a lot of support ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being that the United States is contained with Democrats and Republicans. Lincoln success to passing
the thirteenth amendment was a controversial issue for many. As discussed in class these groups were
formed to give voice to ordinary people and to disable the Government from becoming tyrannical.
Many people disagreed with the passing of this law. Many feared that the abolishing of slaves will
affect many job opportunities for themselves. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863,
which had freed most slaves as a fighter in the war but had not made slavery illegal. Lincoln faith
towards passing this issue was very extreme. Slaves where page the bare minimum for their service in
the war. However, in order for slavery to be abolished, Lincoln had to gain votes from Democratic and
Republican parties. Some politicians see peace as a necessary precursor to the passing of the
amendment, but others see the passing of the amendment as a step on the road to the end of the Civil
War. In order to gain votes for many different regions, Lincoln had to ensure individuals, pay and job
opportunities to be successful in the abolishment of slavery. Abraham Lincoln had a lot of faith and
patience towards the abolishment of

The Cultural Value Of Ballet
The art of ballet, originating and initially flourishing within Europe s borders, experienced vast
reforms between the mid 17th and early 20th centuries. Born in France s royal court, ballet pursued its
most defining escalation upon Louis XIV s founding of the Académie Royale de Danse in 1661,
wherein professional dancers received training to perform for the king and his court. Upon ballet s
increased state of professionalism and movement to locations apart from the court ballroom, women
were incorporated into the formerly male dominated art, leading ballet to be deemed a woman s
profession by the nineteenth century. With the coming of the 20th century, a focus regarding the view
of the human body combined with a desire for modernization ... Show more content on

The Ballets Russes, perhaps the most celebrated company in history, transformed the face of ballet
from the nineteenth century s classically rigid nature to that of modernistic tendencies by means of
societal proceedings. Following the devastating events of Bloody Sunday in 1905, wherein
governmental troops opened fire on peacefully petitioning peasants and workers, the Russian tsar
released his October Manifesto in an attempt to achieve compromise within society. Out of dispute,
dancers such as Mikhail Fokine, Anna Pavlova, and Vaslav Nijinsky arranged secret meetings and
protests with the help of students at the Theater School. Yearning for a greater input regarding the
future of their art after years of discouragement by Imperial mismanagement, such artists were pushed
to sign a declaration of loyalty to the Russian state. With the commitment of Sergei Legat s suicide,
the bond that once existed between the tsar and Russian art community was utterly disunited.
Performing a short solo titled The Dying Swan, Pavlova s movements proved to be of an
improvisatory nature, parting with the prior physical and cultural distinctiveness so long associated
with classical ballet. Paving the path to a style of dance that allowed for greater liberty and intensity
on the dancer s part, this

Essay On How To Abort A Fetus
There are many methods used to abort a fetus. Some are quite gruesome, while others are less
intrusive. The D C (Dilation Curettage) is occasionally used up to the twelfth week. The cervix is
dilated and a cruet is inserted into the uterus. The baby s body is then cut into pieces and removed by
suction. The uterine wall is then scraped, removing the placenta to empty the entire uterus. A D E
(Dilation Evacuation) can be performed up to eighteen weeks. The uterus is entered with a forceps
which grabs and twists the baby s body to dismember it. Sometimes the head needs to be crushed in
order to remove it. Another form of abortion is the Hysterotomy which can be used in the last three
months of pregnancy. The mother s stomach is cut open, much like a C ... Show more content on

If it is born still alive, it is uncared for and left to die. The next type of abortion is called
Prostaglandin. This procedure can be used during the second half of the pregnancy. A compound is
injected into the muscle of the uterus, much like a hormone, which causes intense contractions and
pushes out the baby. The contractions are so severe, that many babies are crushed to death. Again, if
the baby is born still alive, they are then left to die. The RU 486 used in the seventh week of
pregnancy is a synthetic steroid that blocks the hormone Progesterone. Once given the RU 486, the
woman then takes a second drug, Prostaglandin, used to induce labor and expel the dead baby. There
is another abortion drug named Ella that works the same way as the RU 486. The final abortion
procedure is that of Suction Abortion. After the cervix is dilated, a tube with a serrated tip is inserted
into the woman s uterus. A suction, twenty nine times more powerful than a household vacuum
cleaner, tears the baby s body apart and sucks it through the hose into a container. This is the usual
method used in the United States during the first twelve weeks of

  • 2. The Difference Between Common Intention Constructive... The difference between common intention constructive trusts and proprietary estoppel has been described as illusory (Hayton). Do you agree with this statement? Consider how the case law has developed and give reasons for your answer. In his article Equitable Rights of Cohabitees Hayton suggested that the distinction between common intention constructive trusts and proprietary estoppel has, over time, come to be but illusory and goes on further to propose that since the general direction of the development of the law has been to embrace the principle of preventing and remedying unconscionable conduct regardless of whether the claim brought before them was originally brought under the concept of a constructive trust or proprietary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Proprietary estoppel, on the other hand, is a legal bar preventing a (first) party from denying another (second) party s right in first party s property where the second party has incurred costs in that property to its detriment . Proprietary estoppel, like other types of estoppel, is not a remedy in itself but a tool to raise estoppel equity , on the basis of which the court is able to decide on the type of remedy that this equity will satisfy. Similarly to the need for the element of common intention for the purpose of establishing a constructive trust, there is a need for the establishment of an active or passive assurance on the part of the defendant that leads to some form of consequential detriment on the part of the claimant when acting in reliance on that assurance. Thus, there must be a causal connection between the actions undertaken by the claimant and the initial assurance on the part of the defendant. The extent and the nature of the detriment suffered by the claimant, however, appears to be substantially more flexible than that necessary to find the existence of a constructive trust. For example, in Inwards v Baker [1965], such detriment amounted to the improvement of the defendant s land, while in Gillett v Holt [2001] it was manifested in both financial and personal detriment. Yet unlike in most cases involving common intention constructive trusts, in neither of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In dealing with the economic depression of the 1930s, it is my opinion that the recovery of Britain was mainly due to the stages of rearmament in the run up to the Second World War. This is not to say, however, that the National Government failed to combat the rises in unemployment, reaching a peak of three million, and the ruined staple industries, they implemented several policies to reboot the economy and lessen the impact on the people. The National Government were successful in some aspects of softening the blow in Britain. Faced with a steep decline in international trade the; partly due to America s protectionist tariffs ... In the most direct (and somewhat vague) policy The Special Areas Act of 1934, money was to be applied to the worst affected areas, but this was dependent on their income and the result was many of the poorest people did not apply. Furthermore, the budget for the act was only £2 million. These policies seem to suggest that the National Government was somewhat lost on the right course of action to take, and even then their commitment to not worsen the deficit limited them to gimmicks or simple lack of effectiveness. They were hardly helped with the condition that Britain now found itself in. Unemployment figures reached new peaks with the largest being in Wales where 33% of men now found themselves without work. The traditional industries, of coal, cotton, iron, steel and shipbuilding, known collectively as the staple industries were the hardest hit; The coal pits of north Wales were finding themselves without contracts, and the shipyards in Jarrow, near Newcastle were so bad that the men announced a march to London, taking several weeks. It accomplished very little but to show just how bad the north of England had been hit. The south meanwhile suffered heavily from cyclical unemployment, wherein the employee would latch onto short term work, finish the contract and become unemployed and then find something else. But even then, the unemployment level for the South east never fell below 15% during the 1930s, in stark ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Canterbury Tales The Canterbury Tales Corruption in the Church Chaucer lived in a time dictated by religion and religious ideas in which he uses The Canterbury Tales to show some of his views. Religion played a significant role in fourteenth century England and also in Chaucer s writing. His ideas of the Church are first seen in The Prologue, and he uses seven religious persons to show the influence of the religion in his writing. Although many of his characters appear to portray part of the corruption in the Church, he does give a small example in which one can conclude that he is speaking in praise. The Friar, who lived off begging, appears to live a lowly existence, while Chaucer refers to the papacy in writing, he had a special license from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Chaucer makes forceful insults in his character explication. The Rule of good St. Benet or St. Maur/ As old and strict he tended to ignore (Chaucer 7.) A monk is supposed to have a strong authority in the Church, but Chaucer explains that he breaks the written laws and precedents set by people recognized as Saints and highly acclaimed people. The Monk is a lazy, disgusting man who lived a dishonest and imprudent life. The Pardoner and Summoner appear together in The Prologue. They further illustrate an example of Chaucer s awareness of a defiled Church. Chaucer provides humor to his description of the Summoner in that he d allow just for a quart of wine /Any good lad to keep a concubine (Chaucer 20.) This means that a person who disobeys the Church without seeking repentance can easily bribe the Summoner, in that he will overlook the situation. Chaucer writes about the Pardoner that by his flatteries and prevarication/ Made monkey of the priest and congregation (Chaucer 22.) This is another direct insult to the Church at the time. Although the Pardoner represents the lowly side of the Church, Chaucer balances it out with a highly appraise of the Parson. He appears into the prologue before the Pardoner and the Summoner, and he clearly is a perfect illustration of the Church, which should be followed over the other corrupt religious men. Quoting his friend Frank Fuller, Twain boldly declares himself the embodiment of American living, and in all honesty, with some right to do so. Twain was born in 1835 to parents John and Jane Clemens under Halley s Comet in Florida, Missouri and later moved to Hannibal. He would later die under the same comet 75 years later in 1910. Further, Mark Twain covered a large range of areas in his writings transitioning from an almost silly humorist to a serious writer who attacked his targets with much darker view of the world. When he began, Twain was a humorist writing books like The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, the book that skyrocketed him to fame in 1867 (Bailey, Kennedy, and Cohen 580). Later on he wrote possibly his most famous book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which was a heartwarming tale of a boy who travels down the Mississippi River helping his friend and ex slave escape. In his story, that was very unusual for his time, he used the dialects of the people along the river, something unheard of in his current era of writing. In his later years his wrote angrier and harsh works such as The Mysterious Stranger a tale in which the devil visits an Austrian village in the Middle Ages. • 6. Reliability Of The Measurement Instrument Essay 4.3 Reliability analysis To evaluate the reliability of the measurement instrument it was developed an internal consistency analysis through Cronbach s alpha. It is an index that takes values between 0 and 1, used to verify if the instrument is reliable and performs stable and consistent measurements (Santesmases, 2009). Cronbach s alpha estimates the lower limit of the reliability coefficient and it is expressed through Formula 2. (2) Where k is the number of items in the test; Si2 is the items variance (from 1...i) and S2sum is the total test variance. This means that the reliability depends on the test length and the covariance among its items (Santesmases, 2009). It is important to mention that it was decided to apply a pilot test to 40 customers, with the purpose of measuring the questionnaire s internal consistency. In the first version, the test was integrated by 22 items distributed in five dimensions and after being undergone to Cronbach s alpha validity test, the instrument was redesigned to 20 items, as is shown in Graphic 4. Morton writes that, Irony involves distancing and displacement, a moving from place to place, or even from homey place into lonely space (Morton 98). This description of irony provides useful tools for understanding how Burtysnky s photographs in OIL function in relation to the sublime. Though these descriptors typify many of Burtysnky s photographs, examining his aerial photographs of the Alberta Oil Sands, such as Alberta Oil Sands #10 Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, 2007 (Fig. 3) will be most productive. • 10. The Socialization Of Lesbian Clients One of the issues that should be addressed in treatment is the socialization that lesbian clients participate in. In treatment, it is necessary to give any client tools for recovery. These tools should include alternative activities that do not revolve around the getting and using of alcohol and drugs. This may be a difficultly task when dealing with LGBT clients especially since there are not many options for socialization besides bars, clubs, or parties. In Oklahoma there are about 333 thousand same sex couples per the 2010 Census (The Williams Institute, 2011). Oklahoma has some programs and organizations that give the LGBT community different opportunities where they can meet other members without being surrounded by alcohol and drugs. Two main organizations are specific geared towards lesbians. Herland offers social and educational services that focus on lesbian issues but is offer to all women (Herland, 2008). The New Meaning Of Airline Packing The New Meaning to Airline Packing Before 9/11 when Americans boarded an airplane, the only worry that crossed their minds could have been hijackers holding the airplane, the crew, and the passengers for some kind of ransom, or something going wrong with the airplane itself. After 9/11, we are now seeing a new kind of hijacker; terrorists who use the airplanes themselves as weapons against the people they hate. They run the airplanes into buildings to kill as many people they can with one attempt. The Subconscious Analysis That Shapes Our Lives Running Head: INTUITION Intuition: The Subconscious Analysis That Shapes Our Lives Shannon Moran Bridges High School INTUITION Abstract Intuition has rarely been given the credit it deserves, even when numerous experiments over the past decades has shown it to be a complex and detailed subconscious process, rather than the pseudo science many still believe it to be. Despite the success of intuition as a decision maker, the ideology that we should trust logic first and hunches second often wins out. While intuition has been known to lead to mistakes, known as Warren Harding Errors, it s often more reliable than logical, thought out problem solving. Ignorance as to the true nature of intuition has led to a societal ideology that values the conscious over the subconscious, and regards intuition as a lesser emotion that isn t to be trusted. However, there is, in fact, science to support the reliability of intuition. Gut feelings are a result of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, located directly behind the nose, which sorts and prioritizes information, and runs all relevant information through the subconscious, which uses an analyzation of past events and calculates the best course of action. A World Of Difference In James Sire s The Universe Next Door A World of Difference (Introduction): In the book The Universe Next Door written by James Sire begins with a brief explanation of what a Worldview is. As stated in the book by Sire, The essence of a worldview lies deep in the inner recesses of the human self. A Worldview involves the mind, but it is first of all a commitment, a matter of the soul. It is spiritual orientation more than it is a matter of mind alone (pg.20, Sire). The author states that it is from the heart that all one s thoughts and actions proceed. The basis of the introduction of Sire s book is answering the seven basic questions of worldview, including what is prime reality the really real? what is the nature of external reality, that is, the world around us? what is a human being? what happens to a person after death? Why is it possible to know anything at all? And finally, how do we know what is right and wrong? (pg.22). Also, the author asserts that by being able to answer some or many of the seven worldview questions that an individual has, then people can form their own worldviews for themselves. Sire discusses nine different worldviews by answering those seven questions, explaining them and depicting what each worldview system believes and does not. Thus, Sire closes the introduction of the book with two questions, Which is your universe? And Which are the universes next door? (pg. 24 Sire). • 20. Postman Always Rings Twice Essay The Postman Always Rings Twice is a prime example of a classic film noir production in the decade of the 1940 s. This film, directed by Tay Garnett, was originally released in 1946. In this production, the narrator is also the main character: a handyman named Frank Chambers. Frank is eventually employed by a middle aged diner owner named Nick Smith. Nick has a wife named Cora who eventually plays the role of the femme fatale in the film. During the movie, Frank falls in love with Cora in his time working at the Twin Oakes diner. As their relationship progresses, Cora realizes that she wants to make something of herself (www.eppc.org). She seductively convinces Frank to do almost anything that she wants him to do. However, citizens in America liked the fact that film noirs had reflected the harsh point of view of everyday people in the streets and they craved to see real actors in real settings, opposed to the studio built streets that they had watched previously in the 1930 s (www.librarypoint.org). There was also a constant fear in the heart of most Americans as the Cold War was present, and nuclear threats held their presence from the Soviet Union. This sense of pessimism and mistrust in the American culture of the time had directly been portrayed in the U.S film industry in the 1940 s as, Americans wanted a harsh view of society from the perspective of everyday people on the streets (www.librarypoint.org). Therefore, The Postman Always Rings Twice, is a perfect example of how Hollywood displayed these characteristics through the corrupt, unhappy fate of Frank Chambers and Cora Smith. In the film, The Postman Always Rings Twice, Frank Chambers stars as the classic anti hero . Displayed fairly early in the story, Frank does indeed display many of the typical characteristics of an anti hero in classic film noirs. It follows that everyone s perceptions are equally true. This of course is the extreme form of relativism that Protagoras claims when he asserts that man is the measure of all things in regards to truth. It seems that if all perceptions (e.g. judgments and beliefs) are equally true, there can be no room for expertise. But what is Protagoras to say of our natural inclination that such things as wisdom and the wise really do exist among individuals? If Protagoras relativism is to be accepted, he must explain how expertise is possible. Protagoras does not deny that some men are wiser than others, but he disagrees that ... It is our common misconception of equating good states with true things, rather than equating good states as better (not truer); as Socrates puts it in behalf of Protagoras, ...The [good] things which appear to [one] are what some people, who are still at a primitive stage, call true ; my position however, is that the one kind are better than the others, but in no way truer (167b). It seems that we are able to allow expertise in light of the Measure Doctrine simply by arguing that the doctor s wisdom does not have any command of objective truth, rather what he is doing is simply affecting change for the better or good with respect to the perceiver. This is controversial, and we will see why later when Socrates brings up the kind of role expertise plays in emergency situations and judgments about the future. Pros And Cons Of No-Platforming In Thomas Hobbes s famous work, The Leviathan he created his famous social contract theory , that states individuals will need to give up some of their own personal autonomy to ensure the security of the state. Looking at this social contract as a spectrum, with security on one end and liberty on the other, one must find a balance between the two. In 2017 there are still on going debates where people want their society to fall on that spectrum, some would rather have more liberty and others more security. In 2016 the Free Speech Debate put out a video debating whether no platforming should be practised at universities. No platforming can be defined a strategy that argues that certain peoples should not be given a platform to speak in a certain social space due to their rhetoric constituting hate speech . Both sides of the debate, the pro no platforming and the anti no platforming teams, gave great points on how serious this issue is, and that there can be real life benefits and consequences on either side of the debate. • 39. Why Do Animals Lack Intelligence Descartes posits that animals lack intelligence, a characteristic that is distinctly a human possession (p.30, Adam Tannery). By this he means their ability to be rational, to exercise reason and to speak; the act of putting words in an orderly fashion to express thoughts. While the deaf and the dumb lack this possession, they have the ability to speak through a different language, sign language (p.31). Parrots in contrast, have the ability to speak but lack the comprehension to express higher levels of thought (p.31). Language is a learnt behavior. If Descartes thought of language as a measure of intelligence, then Washoe a chimp who has been taught to communicate through American Sign Language (ASL) would be a refutable example of this statement. Critics argued that the chimps were only taught to mimic, but Washoe shocked researchers when she taught her adopted son Loulis about 50 ASL signs without researchers intervention2. Surely, this is evidence that animals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is true for artificial insemination and genetic sequencing of DNA to select against deleterious genotypes and then inseminate a female with this optimal zygote. They have also created defense mechanism that has nothing to do with adaptation in a defense against deadly animals; these include tranquilizers and even guns. With all that being said, they do not need to concern themselves with developing mechanisms to live in the wild and surviving against predators. These concerns were the concerns of their ancestors and their non human counterparts. Humans are now concerned with understanding the complexities of their creation and so some create religion as means to express that, which cannot be understood through science or tangible matters on ... • 42. The Cultural Value Of Ballet The art of ballet, originating and initially flourishing within Europe s borders, experienced vast reforms between the mid 17th and early 20th centuries. Born in France s royal court, ballet pursued its most defining escalation upon Louis XIV s founding of the Académie Royale de Danse in 1661, wherein professional dancers received training to perform for the king and his court. Upon ballet s increased state of professionalism and movement to locations apart from the court ballroom, women were incorporated into the formerly male dominated art, leading ballet to be deemed a woman s profession by the nineteenth century. The Ballets Russes, perhaps the most celebrated company in history, transformed the face of ballet from the nineteenth century s classically rigid nature to that of modernistic tendencies by means of societal proceedings. Following the devastating events of Bloody Sunday in 1905, wherein governmental troops opened fire on peacefully petitioning peasants and workers, the Russian tsar released his October Manifesto in an attempt to achieve compromise within society. Out of dispute, dancers such as Mikhail Fokine, Anna Pavlova, and Vaslav Nijinsky arranged secret meetings and protests with the help of students at the Theater School. Yearning for a greater input regarding the future of their art after years of discouragement by Imperial mismanagement, such artists were pushed to sign a declaration of loyalty to the Russian state. With the commitment of Sergei Legat s suicide, the bond that once existed between the tsar and Russian art community was utterly disunited. Performing a short solo titled The Dying Swan, Pavlova s movements proved to be of an improvisatory nature, parting with the prior physical and cultural distinctiveness so long associated with classical ballet. Paving the path to a style of dance that allowed for greater liberty and intensity on the dancer s part, this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Essay On How To Abort A Fetus There are many methods used to abort a fetus. Some are quite gruesome, while others are less intrusive. The D C (Dilation Curettage) is occasionally used up to the twelfth week. The cervix is dilated and a cruet is inserted into the uterus. The baby s body is then cut into pieces and removed by suction. The uterine wall is then scraped, removing the placenta to empty the entire uterus. A D E (Dilation Evacuation) can be performed up to eighteen weeks. The uterus is entered with a forceps which grabs and twists the baby s body to dismember it. Sometimes the head needs to be crushed in order to remove it. Another form of abortion is the Hysterotomy which can be used in the last three months of pregnancy. The next type of abortion is called Prostaglandin. This procedure can be used during the second half of the pregnancy. A compound is injected into the muscle of the uterus, much like a hormone, which causes intense contractions and pushes out the baby. The contractions are so severe, that many babies are crushed to death. Again, if the baby is born still alive, they are then left to die. The RU 486 used in the seventh week of pregnancy is a synthetic steroid that blocks the hormone Progesterone. Once given the RU 486, the woman then takes a second drug, Prostaglandin, used to induce labor and expel the dead baby. There is another abortion drug named Ella that works the same way as the RU 486. The final abortion procedure is that of Suction Abortion. After the cervix is dilated, a tube with a serrated tip is inserted into the woman s uterus. A suction, twenty nine times more powerful than a household vacuum cleaner, tears the baby s body apart and sucks it through the hose into a container. This is the usual method used in the United States during the first twelve weeks of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
