Essay on Review of Janet Abbate s Inventing the Internet
Janet Abbate, Inventing the Internet, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge,
Massachusetts, 1999, 258 pages
Janet Abbate s Inventing the Internet explores the history of the Internet as a tale of collaboration and
conflict among a remarkable variety of players. (3) Abbate s writing concentrates on the Internet s
development through social and cultural influences. The book explores the evolution of the Internet
from ARPANET to global networks. The Internet s expansion has existed within an interworking web
of innovators; government and military, computer scientists, graduate students, researchers, cable and
phone companies, network users, etc. The details given by Abbate affirm the book s claim that the

The fourth considers the shift made, From ARPANET to Internet approaching defense and research.
The fifth section covers The Internet in the Arena of International Standards. The final section,
Popularizing the Internet, shows the beginning of the wide spread of the Internet but before Internet
connectivity becomes popular at the personal level. All things considered, the book states the
expansions in Internet history between 1959 and 1991, with some proceedings to 1994. The author s
study of the Internet s genesis makes systematic links between the technological development and its
organizational, social, and cultural environment. There are many available histories on the Internet, in
print and online. Most are well documented information on technology and its history. Some mention
the fundamental concepts of communication, information, and knowledge. Abbate s work, however,
goes beyond ordinary facts and her findings are most revealing. The beginning of the Internet is well
known. It was a United States Defense research program named ARPANET. The internal structure of
ARPA that reared the network development during its first years is not as well known. Inventing the
Internet explains how the little agency was created in 1958 to respond to the Soviets successful launch
of the world s first artificial satellite. ARPA did not own a laboratory.

Analysis Of The Last Of The Nine Stories
The last of the Nine Stories, Teddy is a complex and philosophy rich testament to Salinger s own
Eastern leanings. The eponymous protagonist is the obvious source of this deep thought, as he
believes himself to be in the later stages of Enlightenment, and speaks freely of his own ideas and
sentiments. However, the plot, as well as the style in which it is written, also speak of convoluted
ideas and symbols. The interplay between character and theme is constant and can be interpreted in
myriad ways, especially given the frustratingly vague ending. All of these aspects work together to
form a work of fiction which has caused significant controversy and confusion over the years. Though
there aren t many prominent characters in Teddy, it is important to remember that even those whom
we see only briefly contribute significantly to the themes and development of the other characters.
Teddy s parents give a glimpse into the implied childhood of the boy, potentially offering another
interpretation of his character. With their dislike of each other and of Teddy, it s possible that, rather
than being a true Zen master, Teddy could just be an unloved 10 year old, who struggles to interact
meaningfully with the world. He uses his persona of Eastern philosopher to pull away from his parents
and his own emotions, guarding himself from any pain he might feel at his parents disregard for him
(Kaufman). Booper, on the other hand, has been shaped by these negative emotions, and has

History And Philosophy Midterm Paper
Philosophy Midterm Paper For centuries scientists have been studying everything from evolution to
space. During that time, there have also been projects upon projects that were taken on by new,
emerging scientists who will continue the work of the teams who came before them. Each new team
brings a new discovery. Something that was previously just a question, such as what makes us water
different than dirt? , has now been answered due to dozens of different teams all working towards the
same goal. Thanks to those scientists, we now know what makes water special. It s not a physical
property, such as colorless, but it s the fact that it s made up of hydrogen and oxygen atoms (F. Jabr 4).
Taking this concept of discovery, we can apply it to something more complex such as the definition of
life. Life is complicated, and many teams of researchers and scientists alike have worked towards the
goal of defining it. Before reading this article, it was assumed that the scientific community could
basically agree on one conclusion: A living thing has order, grows and develops, maintains
homeostasis, has a metabolic structure, reacts to stimuli, reproduces, and evolves. This definition of
life can be compacted into this simple statement made by NASA, [Life is] a self sustaining system
capable of Darwinian evolution. However, this statement has been proven untrue by Ferris Jabr s
theory that life doesn t actually exist because it s a concept rooted in the human mind. The reason he

Explore the way that Kay portrays family relationships in Trumpet. In what way does this theme relate
to the struggle for identity?

contrast so close to home can make a person wonder who is right and what to believe leaving them
struggling to figure out who they are amongst it all. Being that the novel has a 70 year time span

Whatever is a dismissive word often used by a mother who having grown tired of repeating the same
thing over and over, has given in and has ultimately stopped caring. Only once, they overcome this
barrier, are Colman and Millie able to grieve together.
Following this is the relationship between Edith and her husband. Though we never hear from her
husband, we learn about him through Edith. Edith is an elderly white lady who has been widowed for
a long time. Her husband was a black man who had come from Africa to Scotland on a boat. He came
over as a young man at the turn of the century. At this time, racism was still very prominent and so
interracial couples were virtually non existent. Edith says that people were shocked that she was going
out with, no, married to, a black man. A black man in a white country at the beginning of the 20th
century was almost certain to encounter racism and inequality. Like Joss, Edith s husband was lucky
enough to meet and marry someone who accepted him for who he was as a person. This total
acceptance and love for a man who society at the time said she should discard and look down on as
beneath her gives promise that had she of been told, she would have been accepting of Joss choice to
become a man in the best embodiment that he could achieve as Edith has been portrayed as a non
judgemental, un conforming and loving character.

Modern Metropolis, By Fritz Lang
Tanveer Khan Kaliopi Pappas, J. D. Civilization 003 4 May 2016 Modern Metropolis Modernity is a
new era in which humans began to think about themselves, and started changing from old traditions
like religious influences to their own culture of radical new ideas. This era is full of rational
humanistic ideas and increased the opportunities for people to go after their interests in life. Modernity
is kind of like the days Americans live today with freedom to be who you think is right. People began
trying to voice their opinions to higher authority, and eventually society picked up on giving what
mankind deserved. For example, many people in the modern era tried to fight for their natural rights,
and also some women requested for some recognition with rights like men. In the film, Metropolis, by
Fritz Lang, there are various elements of modernity. Mr. Fredersen, who was the owner of Metropolis
city, was very selfish and greedy for production that led to increase in revenues. He was married to
Hel, who died giving birth to Freder. Rotwang was attracted to Hel, also a scientist, inventor, and kind
of insane. He now hates Mr. Fredersen and his son for all the reasons he wasn t able to receive love
from Hel. Maria is the religious figure where she stays underground in the catacombs to spread hope
to all the workers that just left it all out at their jobs. The creators of the film made the setting full of

The book, Brave New World, written by Aldous Huxley, was published in 1932. The book is about
Huxley s vision of the future. The story is about a place where babies were born in factories. It is a
world where people can have sex but no babies produced or STD by having sex. The life in Brave
New World is more pleasurable than just being happy. The life there is hedonistic. It has five castes,
Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons. Alphas are tall, intelligent, and muscular; Epsilons are
dumb, and ugly. Today s world is moving closer to living in Huxley s Brave New World.
In today s world, the rich are dominant just like in Brave New World, the Alphas/Betas are dominant.

Heritage and Identity in Pat Barker s Regeneration
The presence of Jews in England has been a source of controversy for many reasons. On page 35 of
Pat Barker s historical novel Regeneration, Siegfried Sassoon reveals the nature of his relationship
with his father, who left home when he was five, and gives an account of his Jewish history. Though
he hadn t been raised Jewish and apparently had no association with his Jewish relatives, Sassoon was
subjected to the discrimination that was often seen in England before and during WWI. Through
Sassoon s Jewish heritage and the other characters relation to the past, Barker exposes the need of
mankind to identify with the past in order to come to terms with the present.

Craiglockhart, responded with Spanish Jews . . . Father s side. Spanish Jews, indicating that his father
being Jewish was reason enough to doubt Sassoon s integrity. However, he quickly reveals that
Sassoon s Mother was a Thorneycroft, dismissing his Jewish roots as giving him Hybrid vigour when
combined with the English blood of his maternal ancestors. Major Huntley s view shows that even
though he is quick to disregard Sassoon s unfavorable Jewish roots considering his more nationally
appealing qualities, it may have been reason enough to consider Sassoon unfit for service.
In the novel, Sassoon is one of many men and women who are struggling to resolve an inner conflict
between their past and present selves, a conflict revealed by their war experience. Coming to terms
with the present means facing the past for many of the characters, including Dr. Rivers, who begins to
struggle with his own identity while working with the soldiers at Craiglockhart. Eventually the doubt
and the strain of his position cause Rivers to have a breakdown and he is ordered to take three weeks

Four Yoga Styles
You might be surprised to learn that there isn t one style of yoga practice so you ll need to learn some
more about the different styles in order to decide which one is right for you. In this article we ll take a
closer look at four practice styles: hatha yoga, vinyasa, ashtanga and power yoga to help you on the
way to your decision.
1. Hatha yoga
Hatha yoga is often used interchangeably with the word yoga and classes are usually slow paced
involving stretching, some simple breathing exercises and some seated meditations. If you are a
beginner then this is a good place to start so that you can spend time learning the basic techniques.
If you are looking for a calming and relaxing experience then hatha yoga is probably right for you. If

The speed of the movements is very much dictated by the teacher, so if you find that a class is too fast
for you look for a different teacher. In order to appreciate vinyasa you need to have a teacher that you
are comfortable with as their style will shape the class, keep looking until you find someone you
connect with.
3. Ashtanga
Ashtanga is a series of poses which realign the spine, detoxify the body and build strength, stamina
and flexibility. There are 75 poses in all and they can take anywhere between an hour and a half to two
hours to complete. You start with sun salutations and then move to standing poses, seated poses,
inversions and backbends before finishing with relaxation.
You can learn ashtanga at a teacher led class, and then when you are happy with the order of the poses
you can either practice on your own or in a mysore class where you practice at your own pace but
have a teacher for guidance.
Ashtanga is a very athletic form of practice and is very popular. If you like a sense of order then this
style will appeal to

Colors In Beloved
A rainbow consists of different types of beautiful colors, and each of them has a role that makes the
rainbow vibrant and colorful. Colors have different meanings in each and one of them. However, it
can be interpreted as more than one meaning depending on how it is used. In the novel, Beloved, by
Toni Morrison, colors play a significant role throughout the book as it makes the story more
interesting and helps depict and describe how the characters are feeling or what they are doing.

Emeralds are called the birthstone of May; that is when life is renewed again. It is a time when plants
and flowers begin a new life and start to grow after suffering through winter. Rebirth plays a
significant role in Beloved because when Sethe killed her baby, it is said that she became a ghost and
is reincarnated into an older woman. Another example is when Paul D escapes his slavery life in 124,
he was able to move on and become a new man. The last example of rebirth is when Denver goes into
her secret to relax it states, Denver s imagination produced its hunger and its food, which she badly
needed because loneliness wore her out. Veiled and protected by the live green walls, she felt ripe and

secret place and feel like new again. The color green is significant in the novel as it helps us find
connections to the changes the characters made to be new

Analysis Of Mile Davis The Birth Of Cool Jazz
The development of cool jazz in the late 1950s defines the culmination of the style into popular
mainstream culture. Mile Davis The Birth of Cool defines a masterpiece that projected an image of an
African American cool cat that played a refined, mellow, and sophisticated style of jazz. Davis would
become a central figure in the cool jazz movement due to his rebellious attitudes towards society, as
well as the drug related criminal culture that he exuded as a countercultural figure in conservative
white America. The Birth of the Cool provided a major record release, which was founded on
minimalist instrumentation and selective note playing as a common theme of cool jazz stylistics
during the late 1950s. In contrast to Bebop, Davis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The etymology of cool typically defined a hip person in African American that displayed a relaxed or
nonchalant countenance. The use of this word in Chisholm s Cool Kind Daddy Blues and Huston s
The Gilded Six Bits illustrates a popularized way to express an individual with a cool demeanor in the
arts. This type of cultural label helped to establish cool jazz as an expression of this African American
lifestyle in the jazz community. The deviant nature of the jazz lifestyle is another major part of the
Cool jazz , which made it cool to be seen as a rebellious in terms of criminal behavior and drug usage.
The cool trend in the early 1950s began with album releases, such as Classics in Jazz: Cool and Quiet
in 1953, which established a music industry standard for mellow jazz in the cool school. Stan Kenton s
Modern Music Orchestra was also a major influence on cool jazz , which revealed the racial diversity
of jazz in white groups that expanded on African American influences. Jazz artists, such as Chet Baker
and Gerry Mulligan, that complimented the master works of Mile Davis and the Modern Jazz Quartet
in this multi racial and multicultural development of cool jazz as a trend in American music. The and
of the 1950s defined the end of cool jazz as a dominant movement in jazz, but it defines the origins
and development of a relaxed and nonchalant style of playing that made a huge impact on jazz

The Hillary Clinton campaign for president in 2016 has been plagued by conspiracy theories that are

the Clintons are never far from a conspiracy theory. Though some of these theories may be a little hard
to believe, in most cases there is strong information to support these claims. There are different
aspects of the Clinton s lives that conspiracy theorists like to target. Some examples are the Clinton

Differences in Slave Laws in Colonial Brazil and Colonial...
Differences in slave laws in British North America and Colonial Brazil Slavery as it existed in
colonial Brazil contained interesting points of comparison and contrast with the slave system existing
in British North America. The slaves in both areas had been left with very little opportunity in which
he could develop as a person. The degree to which the individual rights of the slave were either
protected or suppressed provides a clearer insight to the differences between North American and
Brazilian slavery. The laws also differed greatly between the two areas and have been placed into three
categories: term of servitude, police and disciplinary powers, and property and other civil rights. Point
One: In both systems of slavery, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The law also made a more concerted attempt to protect the slave against mistreatment by his master.
Mistreatment of a slave could lead both to the freedom of the slave and to the imprisoning of the
master. Point Three: The slave in British North America could not own property and had absolutely no
civil rights. The law clearly stated that he could neither own, inherit, nor will property, couldn t
engage in buying or selling anything except at the pleasure of his master. In contrast, the slave in
Brazil could own property, could engage in buying and selling, and was also guaranteed Sundays,
holidays, and other times which to work for his own advancement. In short, the law implied that while
the master could own a man s labor, he could not own the man as a person. In conclusion, it is not
easy to make a comparison between the two slave systems. Brazilian slave masters often evaded the
law and could be exceedingly brutal and British North American masters were often much more
lenient than the law required. Conditions were usually more severe in Brazil and this may have
worsened the actual material situation of the Brazilian slave. In North America the slave was treated
like a thing and in Brazil there was some attempt to treat him as a man. This fact made a profound
difference in the way the two systems affected the slave as an individual and in the way in which they
impinged upon the development of his

Genetic Disease Is An Autosomal Dominant Neurodegenerative...
Genetic diseases are diseases that are passed on from parents to their offspring. An example of a
genetic disease which can be inherited is Huntington Disease. Huntington Disease is an autosomal
dominant neurodegenerative disorder with midlife onset characterised by psychiatric, cognitive and
motor symptoms (G. Vonsattel and DiFiglia, 1998). The statistics for HD blah blah blah Like all
genetic diseases, huntington s disease has a specific inheritance pattern.
Huntington disease is an autosomal disease this means that the defective gene does not occur on one
of the sex chromosomes but instead it occurs on one of the other 22 chromosomes (known as
autosomes). It is a also a dominant disorder so therefore only one copy of the altered gene, passed on
from a parent who has it, is necessary to cause their offspring to inherit the disease. If one of the
parents has the defective gene their offspring will have a 50/50 chance of inheriting that gene. (See
Figure 1).
If the offspring inherits the gene it is guaranteed that they will develop Huntington s disease at some
point in their life time, the disease does not skip generations. The defective gene is not present on
either of the sex chromosomes resulting in the disease being independent of gender. This means that
male and female offspring will have an equal risk of inheriting the disease. The faulty gene (the HD
gene) that is to blame for the development of huntington s disease is located on chromosome 4 (See
Figure 2), it

The Control Variables For Investment Derivatives Use
The control variables used in this thesis were selected based on previous literature.
Including the variables that previous researchers have shown to influence firm derivatives use will
improve the explanatory power of the model (Knopf et al., 2002).
3.4.1 Control variable for CDS model
Drawing upon the existing literature in derivatives use, CDS use is modeled as a function of CEOs
risk taking incentives generated by stock options compensation (vega) and the following control
variables: growth opportunities, financial distress (leverage), firm focus (diversification), managers
risk aversion, delta, bank size, and other derivatives.
Growth opportunities are considered by previous studies to affect derivatives use (Smith and Stulz, ...
Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Smith and Stulz (1985), firms that face higher expected costs of financial distress have
larger incentives to use derivatives because derivatives can reduce the present value of bankruptcy and
the probability of financial distress. Firms can use derivatives to reduce the variance of a firm s cash
flow or earnings which enable firm to have sufficient cash flow to fulfill its fixed payment obligations
and reduce the probability of financial distress (Aretz and Bartram, 2010; Supanvanij and Strauss,
2010). Similarly to previous studies, I have used leverage as a proxy for financial distress (e.g.,
Tufano, 1996; Rogers, 2002; Aretz and Bartram, 2010). Leverage is measured with the ratio of total
debt to book value of assets (e.g., Coles et al; 2006).
I include diversification as a control variable for firm focus. Earlier empirical studies (e.g., Tufano,
1996; Géczy et al., 2007) suggest a negative relationship between the degree of diversification and
derivatives use. Firms can choose to reduce firm risk through changing the level of diversification
(Coles et al., 2006; Bartram et al., 2011). For all the banks in the sample, I collect information on the
degree of diversification which is measured by the number of geographical segments of the firm at the
end of each year (Géczy et al., 1997; Fung et al., 2012). The primary source of data on the number of
segments is Datastream

Another area where the 2018 Subaru Forester stands out is in the versatility of the vehicle. Not only
can it handle off and on road conditions with ease, it is a very practical car. There is a great deal of
room for outdoor gear, musical instruments, groceries and more, so families can drive the vehicle
every day without hesitation. Drivers may opt for a power operated liftgate also, if they so desire, and
there are numerous compartments for the small items that seem to make it into every vehicle. This

The Trade Of The Fur Industry
Many people who wear fur are not aware with the sad reality behind its production. Fur is associated
with glamor and wealth. However, the truth is entirely different. Annually, millions of animals are
brutally killed for their skin in the name of fashion. Coats, accessories, hats, scarves, and other fancy
items are made from these innocent beings. They live their entire life in tiny cages, often with
diseases, and at the end beaten, skinned alive and thrown onto a pile. It may sound terrifying, but this
practice happens on a daily basis. Before buying fur, people should be well informed that their trendy
items come from cruel, needless, and bad for the environment industry. The main countries that
produce farm fur are China, Canada, United States, Russia, and various Eastern European countries.
China is the major fur s exporter. The fur industry is the only industry that is unregulated by the
federal government. Animals raised for fur in farms include minks, foxes, chinchillas, rabbits, dogs,
and cats. Also, there are beautiful wild animals such as raccoons, wolves, coyotes, and more who are
locked in steel jaw traps while free in nature and then forced to live in cages their whole lives.
According to PETA Organization, Animals who are trapped in the wild can suffer for days from blood
loss, shock, dehydration, frostbite, gangrene, and attacks by predators. They may be caught in steel
jaw traps that slam down on their legs, often cutting to the bone. That

Indian Politics
Politics of India India is the largest democracy in the world. India has the biggest number of people
with franchise rights and the largest number of political parties, which take part in election campaign.
In the 1996 national elections, almost 600 million people voted and an average of 26 candidates
competed for each of the 543 territorial constituency seats. Elections are held at different levels. The
two major election levels are at national level, after which the national government is established and
at state level after which the state government is established. Elections are also held for city, town and
village councils. There are different political issues in Indian politics. Some are national level and
some regional level. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In these elections members for the Lower House are elected. Head of a state is called Chief Minister,
who is member of the Lower House. Constitutionally the figurehead of the state is the Governor, who
is appointed by the President according to the advice of the national government. After the state
elections the governor calls for the suitable candidate to form the government. In general the governor
has more legislative rights at state level than the President has at national level. The governor can call
on early elections in the state, or fire the government if he thinks that the government has failed or is
unstable. In the federal relations between the state and central government, the central government has
more authority on state matters than the state government. For example the central government has the
right to redistribute the state borders without consulting the state governments on this matter. If the
political conditions in any state are not stable, the national government can call on the President to
declare President s rule in that specific state. And so the government in that state is dissolved, which
means an emergency rule is declared and sometimes if necessary the army is put to work in that state.
Even though the Constitution determinates the rights of the different authorities in the administration
process, there can be other pressures like strong lobbies or strong political parties, which, sometimes

Bradford Vs Shakespeare
Michael Radford s version of Shakespeare s The Merchant of Venice nearly surpasses it s predecessor
Trevor Nunn s in every way because it was crafted with a much higher budget, It has elements that
enforce the emotional impact of the story and successfully adapts and improves the text from
Shakespeare s vision. With the higher budget Michael Radford is able to make a more convincing and
higher quality film by having, a more skilled and visually appealing cast, real sets and locations, and a
much improved script. Missing from Trevor Nunn s version of the text, Michael s film contains, a
variety of quality lighting, sound design, and skilled actors which greatly improves the emotional
impact of his film. Michael was able to improve the source material over his predecessor by, making
Shakespeare s language more audible, taking more liberties with his story, and expanding on
Shakespeare s original ideas and themes. Michael Radford s film, using it s higher budget, was able to
implement many more emotional elements, while adapting and improving Shakespeare s Ideas.

Seattle and is only closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas day. The rest of the year you can find a

The 1950s Rock N Roll Movement
Introduction
The 1950s rock n roll movement was rooted from a style of music created by black people and their
descendants (Scaruffi, 2005). The lives of Americans were changed, as the older generation looked
down upon this genre and life style, while the young generation fell in love with it ( America, 2008).
Artist of the 1950s played a huge roll in the ideas that influenced every aspect of it such as legends
Buddy Holly and Little Richard. From moral changes to political changes rock n roll arrived to
America ready to make an everlasting impact (Stewart, 2008). Although the decades have passed, and
the times have changed rock n roll holds a legacy that will forever impact the lives of people as a
whole.
Foundations Of Rock n Roll
After World War 2, the world was faced with a bipolar world of the two winners: the USSR and the
US (Scaruffi, 2005). The world was left with international bitterness and resentment and unlike other
wars, a war on ideology. The war changed almost every aspect of life, because ideologies and morals
began to shift and change. The post War era had brought along with it many new technologies such as
the boom of cars, computers and even ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rock n roll was not a specific genre but it led to many different genres and styles of music to be
created. Since rock n roll was founded on the basis of folk and blues many of the first artists were
black, but were given little credit at the time such as Little Richard, whose song Tutti Frutti was
covered by Pat Boone, and topped higher on music charts ( Music, 2004). The first rock n roll band
was formed (the Comets) by white artist Bill Haley in 1952, and they quickly began to climb
Billboard charts making the first rock n roll song to enter the Billboard charts (Scaruffi, 2005). The
Comets showed that rock n roll was an instant hit,and there was a big audience hungry to get more of

Comparing Kenny And Byron
Kenny and Byron are both very similar and different. They have similarities like being able to tease
people and also like feeling sorry for things and people. They re also very different as well. Byron
often tries to act cool and tries to not show any emotion. Kenny on the other hand, tends to show his
emotion freely. Byron also doesn t do very well in school, unlike Kenny who seems to thrive in
school. Kenny could easily be described as inspired. Kenny displays this with his interaction with
other characters. For example, he went to talk with his father in the bathroom when his dad was
shaving. At that moment Kenny had said that he was also growing mustache. I believe that this is
because Kenny looks up to his father and wants to be like him. Another example would be ... Show

Byron shows this characteristic as he interacts with other characters in the story. For example, Byron
eventually throws a Swedish Creme cookie at a bird which ends up killing it. He gets extremely upset
with himself from this event. That is shown because of him throwing up, crying, and then having a
funeral for the bird. Then in many other experiences Byron carelessly beats up kids not feeling bad
afterwards whatsoever. This shows that he is ambivalent because he has mixed feelings about injury
and death. He carelessly beats up kids but then when it comes to killing a bird he has a huge
breakdown. Another example would be his feelings and action towards Kenny. Sometimes he will be
nice and brotherlike with Kenny, but then other times he turns around and then ends up beating up
Kenny. When Kenny goes to Byron s class and reads after school Byron in a way congratulates
Kenny. Then in other instances like How to survive a blizzard Byron seems to be a completely
different person and causes harm to Kenny with his friend Buphead. This also shows that he is
ambivalent because he treats Kenny nicely one second and then the next second he s teasing or beating

Rhetorical Analysis of Colin Fletcher s The Man Who Walked...
The story, The Man Who Walked through Time, by Colin Fletcher, is depicting a situation where he
takes over the role of a non existent Indian. Fletcher is trying to experience things the same way the
Indian man used to. Fletcher lets the audience see this by using rhetorical devices such as word choice,
tone, and descriptive examples. In Fletcher s style of writing he sometimes makes the reader think that
he is actually experiences some of the same things that the Indian experienced.
Fletcher, at first makes the reader believe that he actually lives in the dwelling. Choosing such
sentences as, I climbed back to my pink apartment house, unpacked, and settled in, (Fletcher 81,
2000), this helps the reader to understand that this is no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The cubical showed every sign of having been built for a man just about my size, (p 81). Again
Fletcher is assuming that the cubical was built for a man of his size. I dwelt in my cliff dwelling for
twenty four hours. And, hour by hour conscious of my vast ignorance, yet curiously confident I began
to focus on my cave dweller more sharply, (p 82). In this sentence Fletcher reassures the reader that
the man knows he s not really experiencing anything with the Indian. We know this because he tells
the audience that he is aware of his own ignorance. By choosing those words, Fletcher lets the reader
know that the man is imagining being with the Indian.
Fletcher has an expository tone. Throughout the essay Fletcher tries to explain to the audience what it
must have been like to live like an Indian. There are very few factual statements in this writing.
Fletcher makes many assumptions and gives his opinion to try to explain to the reader what it must
have been like to live in a cliff dwelling. By only assuming he does a pretty good job of making the
reader believe.
The descriptive examples that Fletcher uses really let s the audience picture it. Throughout the writing
when the man speaks of events, he explains in great detail. first I pictured him building his home. I
saw him chipping patiently away at the roof of the cave, so that there would be headroom when he sat
up in his cubical, (Fletcher 82).

Mark Twain s The Awful German Language
Mark Twain s essay, The Awful German Language , is a jocular expression of the average english
speaker s foray into the work of the German language. Twain uses humor and hyperbole to express his
difficulties and frustrations that one experiences when trying to learn to speak German. Mark Twain is
seen as something of a god in American literary history and his mastery of the english language is
apparent, even in this work describing his experiences with another language. Twain states A person
who has not studied german can form no idea of what a perplexing language it is. (Pg. 1). While
Twain s arguments are charming and incredibly clever, and those learning german can (in their
inevitable moments of dire frustration) most certainly relate, the truth is more simple. Learning any

preposterous. The indecipherable genders of nouns, the phenomena of separable verbs, the four cases

confounding for a language. He uses the Tale of the Fishwife and It s Sad Fate (Pg. 5) as a rather
extreme example of the harshness of the language. By replacing nouns with their pronouns by gender

Is The Budget Has Outlived Its Usefulness On The 21st...
Introduction The purpose of this paper is to examine the question of whether the budget has outlived
its usefulness in the 21st century. Over the past 20 years, people within the academic and business
worlds have argued that it is time for companies to move away from traditional budgets to a concept
known as beyond budgeting (Sandalgaard Nikolaj Bukh, 2014: 409 410). Researchers and business
practitioners have argued that the traditional budget process requires too much time, with some
estimating that traditional budgeting requires 20% of management time throughout the year to
complete (Neely, Bourne Adams, 2003: 22). Others have also argued that traditional budgeting is
flawed because it provides an incentive for managers to essentially lie about how much money they
project to spend or the revenue and profits they project to achieve in order to receive more monies or
to demonstrate reduced spending to corporate leaders (Hope Fraser, 2003: 108). However, some
researchers and practitioners have explained that the entire idea that the traditional budgeting process
is going to end in favor of the beyond budgeting concept is incorrect given that most organizations
continue to prepare and use traditional budgets (Jackson Starovic, 2004: 2). In the discussion and
examination that follows, a brief definition and description of the concept of beyond budgeting is
provided. Then, the criticism of the traditional budgeting process by the proponents of the beyond

Why Business Visionaries Need Fearlessness And Feariness
One of the principle reasons business visionaries need fearlessness and confidence is to guarantee they
use sound judgment. Effectively beginning a business will oblige settling on intense choices. Without
trust in yourself, you will discover choice making a troublesome undertaking. The more sure you are
in yourself, the more certain you are about your thoughts, improving your capacity to make great
decisions.another reason you require fearlessness as a business person is to guarantee you have an
uplifting disposition. When you begin a business, it is not difficult to permit apprehensions and
questions to keep you from accomplishing achievement. People with large amounts of trust in
themselves have an uplifting demeanor, which helps them to push fear and uncertainty away. With an
uplifting mentality, business people can push towards success.any ambitious person will let you know

The Habits Of The Polar Bear
The polar bear is a large bear that lives in the north. They are the second largest bear in the bear
family, and they have a unique white fur that differentiates them from the rest of the bears. This white
fur is not only their unique characteristic, but also an amazing tool that God has given them so that
they can survive in the wild. In order to better understand polar bear, one must understand their habits,
their characteristics, and the dangers they are facing.
First of all it s a question that everyone has, what do they eat? Their diet depends on high fat content
in seal fat, this is one of the few stuff that can provide them enough calories to maintain their survival
and to pass down their genes. They usually eat seals. Ringed seals are eaten by the females and little
ones, and the males hunt the bearded seals, which are bigger than the ringed seals. In the good times
when they have access to much food, they may eat only the bladder and the skin of the seal because
that s the fattest part. However, when times are not that good, they will also eat other stuff if it is
available. They will hunt whales if they are trapped, they will also accept small animals and any
carcass within their reach. Unlike some bears, they don t have the habit of storing food. After they
finish eating, they will leave the rest of the body for scavengers. Sometimes the scavengers might be
other polar bears that failed their hunt. It is also very common for them to share food. Once, a scientist

Argumentation is based around the conscious choices of what to say to influence the audience.
Advocates have an ethical responsibility not to deceive their audiences or other arguers by using

Diminishing Tax Evasion In The United States
The decision to evade one s taxes is influenced by specific demographics. Tax evasion carries high

Essay on Review of Janet Abbate s Inventing the Internet Janet Abbate, Inventing the Internet, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1999, 258 pages Janet Abbate s Inventing the Internet explores the history of the Internet as a tale of collaboration and conflict among a remarkable variety of players. (3) Abbate s writing concentrates on the Internet s development through social and cultural influences. The book explores the evolution of the Internet from ARPANET to global networks. The Internet s expansion has existed within an interworking web of innovators; government and military, computer scientists, graduate students, researchers, cable and phone companies, network users, etc. The details given by Abbate affirm the book s claim that the Internet was not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fourth considers the shift made, From ARPANET to Internet approaching defense and research. The fifth section covers The Internet in the Arena of International Standards. The final section, Popularizing the Internet, shows the beginning of the wide spread of the Internet but before Internet connectivity becomes popular at the personal level. All things considered, the book states the expansions in Internet history between 1959 and 1991, with some proceedings to 1994. The author s study of the Internet s genesis makes systematic links between the technological development and its organizational, social, and cultural environment. There are many available histories on the Internet, in print and online. Most are well documented information on technology and its history. Some mention the fundamental concepts of communication, information, and knowledge. Abbate s work, however, goes beyond ordinary facts and her findings are most revealing. The beginning of the Internet is well known. It was a United States Defense research program named ARPANET. The internal structure of ARPA that reared the network development during its first years is not as well known. Inventing the Internet explains how the little agency was created in 1958 to respond to the Soviets successful launch of the world s first artificial satellite. ARPA did not own a laboratory. ... • 4. Analysis Of The Last Of The Nine Stories The last of the Nine Stories, Teddy is a complex and philosophy rich testament to Salinger s own Eastern leanings. The eponymous protagonist is the obvious source of this deep thought, as he believes himself to be in the later stages of Enlightenment, and speaks freely of his own ideas and sentiments. However, the plot, as well as the style in which it is written, also speak of convoluted ideas and symbols. The interplay between character and theme is constant and can be interpreted in myriad ways, especially given the frustratingly vague ending. All of these aspects work together to form a work of fiction which has caused significant controversy and confusion over the years. Though there aren t many prominent characters in Teddy, it is important to remember that even those whom we see only briefly contribute significantly to the themes and development of the other characters. Teddy s parents give a glimpse into the implied childhood of the boy, potentially offering another interpretation of his character. With their dislike of each other and of Teddy, it s possible that, rather than being a true Zen master, Teddy could just be an unloved 10 year old, who struggles to interact meaningfully with the world. He uses his persona of Eastern philosopher to pull away from his parents and his own emotions, guarding himself from any pain he might feel at his parents disregard for him (Kaufman). During that time, there have also been projects upon projects that were taken on by new, emerging scientists who will continue the work of the teams who came before them. Each new team brings a new discovery. Something that was previously just a question, such as what makes us water different than dirt? , has now been answered due to dozens of different teams all working towards the same goal. Thanks to those scientists, we now know what makes water special. It s not a physical property, such as colorless, but it s the fact that it s made up of hydrogen and oxygen atoms (F. Jabr 4). Taking this concept of discovery, we can apply it to something more complex such as the definition of life. Life is complicated, and many teams of researchers and scientists alike have worked towards the goal of defining it. Before reading this article, it was assumed that the scientific community could basically agree on one conclusion: A living thing has order, grows and develops, maintains homeostasis, has a metabolic structure, reacts to stimuli, reproduces, and evolves. This definition of life can be compacted into this simple statement made by NASA, [Life is] a self sustaining system capable of Darwinian evolution. However, this statement has been proven untrue by Ferris Jabr s theory that life doesn t actually exist because it s a concept rooted in the human mind. The reason he ... Only once, they overcome this barrier, are Colman and Millie able to grieve together. Following this is the relationship between Edith and her husband. Though we never hear from her husband, we learn about him through Edith. Edith is an elderly white lady who has been widowed for a long time. Her husband was a black man who had come from Africa to Scotland on a boat. He came over as a young man at the turn of the century. At this time, racism was still very prominent and so interracial couples were virtually non existent. Edith says that people were shocked that she was going out with, no, married to, a black man. A black man in a white country at the beginning of the 20th century was almost certain to encounter racism and inequality. Like Joss, Edith s husband was lucky enough to meet and marry someone who accepted him for who he was as a person. This total acceptance and love for a man who society at the time said she should discard and look down on as beneath her gives promise that had she of been told, she would have been accepting of Joss choice to become a man in the best embodiment that he could achieve as Edith has been portrayed as a non judgemental, un conforming and loving character. This era is full of rational humanistic ideas and increased the opportunities for people to go after their interests in life. Modernity is kind of like the days Americans live today with freedom to be who you think is right. People began trying to voice their opinions to higher authority, and eventually society picked up on giving what mankind deserved. For example, many people in the modern era tried to fight for their natural rights, and also some women requested for some recognition with rights like men. In the film, Metropolis, by Fritz Lang, there are various elements of modernity. Mr. Fredersen, who was the owner of Metropolis city, was very selfish and greedy for production that led to increase in revenues. He was married to Hel, who died giving birth to Freder. The law clearly stated that he could neither own, inherit, nor will property, couldn t engage in buying or selling anything except at the pleasure of his master. In contrast, the slave in Brazil could own property, could engage in buying and selling, and was also guaranteed Sundays, holidays, and other times which to work for his own advancement. An example of a genetic disease which can be inherited is Huntington Disease. Huntington Disease is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder with midlife onset characterised by psychiatric, cognitive and motor symptoms (G. Vonsattel and DiFiglia, 1998). The statistics for HD blah blah blah Like all genetic diseases, huntington s disease has a specific inheritance pattern. Huntington disease is an autosomal disease this means that the defective gene does not occur on one of the sex chromosomes but instead it occurs on one of the other 22 chromosomes (known as autosomes). It is a also a dominant disorder so therefore only one copy of the altered gene, passed on from a parent who has it, is necessary to cause their offspring to inherit the disease. If one of the parents has the defective gene their offspring will have a 50/50 chance of inheriting that gene. (See Figure 1). If the offspring inherits the gene it is guaranteed that they will develop Huntington s disease at some point in their life time, the disease does not skip generations. The defective gene is not present on either of the sex chromosomes resulting in the disease being independent of gender. This means that male and female offspring will have an equal risk of inheriting the disease. The faulty gene (the HD gene) that is to blame for the development of huntington s disease is located on chromosome 4 (See Figure 2), it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to Smith and Stulz (1985), firms that face higher expected costs of financial distress have larger incentives to use derivatives because derivatives can reduce the present value of bankruptcy and the probability of financial distress. Firms can use derivatives to reduce the variance of a firm s cash flow or earnings which enable firm to have sufficient cash flow to fulfill its fixed payment obligations and reduce the probability of financial distress (Aretz and Bartram, 2010; Supanvanij and Strauss, 2010). Similarly to previous studies, I have used leverage as a proxy for financial distress (e.g., Tufano, 1996; Rogers, 2002; Aretz and Bartram, 2010). Leverage is measured with the ratio of total debt to book value of assets (e.g., Coles et al; 2006). I include diversification as a control variable for firm focus. Earlier empirical studies (e.g., Tufano, 1996; Géczy et al., 2007) suggest a negative relationship between the degree of diversification and derivatives use. Firms can choose to reduce firm risk through changing the level of diversification (Coles et al., 2006; Bartram et al., 2011). For all the banks in the sample, I collect information on the degree of diversification which is measured by the number of geographical segments of the firm at the end of each year (Géczy et al., 1997; Fung et al., 2012). • 27. Comparing Kenny And Byron Kenny and Byron are both very similar and different. They have similarities like being able to tease people and also like feeling sorry for things and people. They re also very different as well. Byron often tries to act cool and tries to not show any emotion. Kenny on the other hand, tends to show his emotion freely. Byron also doesn t do very well in school, unlike Kenny who seems to thrive in school. Kenny could easily be described as inspired. Kenny displays this with his interaction with other characters. For example, he went to talk with his father in the bathroom when his dad was shaving. At that moment Kenny had said that he was also growing mustache. I believe that this is because Kenny looks up to his father and wants to be like him. Another example would be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Byron shows this characteristic as he interacts with other characters in the story. For example, Byron eventually throws a Swedish Creme cookie at a bird which ends up killing it. He gets extremely upset with himself from this event. That is shown because of him throwing up, crying, and then having a funeral for the bird. Then in many other experiences Byron carelessly beats up kids not feeling bad afterwards whatsoever. This shows that he is ambivalent because he has mixed feelings about injury and death. He carelessly beats up kids but then when it comes to killing a bird he has a huge breakdown. Another example would be his feelings and action towards Kenny. Sometimes he will be nice and brotherlike with Kenny, but then other times he turns around and then ends up beating up Kenny. When Kenny goes to Byron s class and reads after school Byron in a way congratulates Kenny. • 28. Rhetorical Analysis of Colin Fletcher s The Man Who Walked... The story, The Man Who Walked through Time, by Colin Fletcher, is depicting a situation where he takes over the role of a non existent Indian. Fletcher is trying to experience things the same way the Indian man used to. Fletcher lets the audience see this by using rhetorical devices such as word choice, tone, and descriptive examples. In Fletcher s style of writing he sometimes makes the reader think that he is actually experiences some of the same things that the Indian experienced. Fletcher, at first makes the reader believe that he actually lives in the dwelling. Choosing such sentences as, I climbed back to my pink apartment house, unpacked, and settled in, (Fletcher 81, 2000), this helps the reader to understand that this is no ... Again Fletcher is assuming that the cubical was built for a man of his size. I dwelt in my cliff dwelling for twenty four hours. And, hour by hour conscious of my vast ignorance, yet curiously confident I began to focus on my cave dweller more sharply, (p 82). In this sentence Fletcher reassures the reader that the man knows he s not really experiencing anything with the Indian. We know this because he tells the audience that he is aware of his own ignorance. By choosing those words, Fletcher lets the reader know that the man is imagining being with the Indian. Fletcher has an expository tone. Throughout the essay Fletcher tries to explain to the audience what it must have been like to live like an Indian. There are very few factual statements in this writing. Fletcher makes many assumptions and gives his opinion to try to explain to the reader what it must have been like to live in a cliff dwelling. By only assuming he does a pretty good job of making the reader believe. The descriptive examples that Fletcher uses really let s the audience picture it. Throughout the writing when the man speaks of events, he explains in great detail. first I pictured him building his home. I saw him chipping patiently away at the roof of the cave, so that there would be headroom when he sat up in his cubical, (Fletcher 82). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. Mark Twain s The Awful German Language Mark Twain s essay, The Awful German Language , is a jocular expression of the average english speaker s foray into the work of the German language. Twain uses humor and hyperbole to express his difficulties and frustrations that one experiences when trying to learn to speak German. Mark Twain is seen as something of a god in American literary history and his mastery of the english language is apparent, even in this work describing his experiences with another language. Twain states A person who has not studied german can form no idea of what a perplexing language it is. (Pg. 1). • 31. Is The Budget Has Outlived Its Usefulness On The 21st... Introduction The purpose of this paper is to examine the question of whether the budget has outlived its usefulness in the 21st century. Over the past 20 years, people within the academic and business worlds have argued that it is time for companies to move away from traditional budgets to a concept known as beyond budgeting (Sandalgaard Nikolaj Bukh, 2014: 409 410). Researchers and business practitioners have argued that the traditional budget process requires too much time, with some estimating that traditional budgeting requires 20% of management time throughout the year to complete (Neely, Bourne Adams, 2003: 22). Others have also argued that traditional budgeting is flawed because it provides an incentive for managers to essentially lie about how much money they project to spend or the revenue and profits they project to achieve in order to receive more monies or to demonstrate reduced spending to corporate leaders (Hope Fraser, 2003: 108). However, some researchers and practitioners have explained that the entire idea that the traditional budgeting process is going to end in favor of the beyond budgeting concept is incorrect given that most organizations continue to prepare and use traditional budgets (Jackson Starovic, 2004: 2). In the discussion and examination that follows, a brief definition and description of the concept of beyond budgeting is provided. Then, the criticism of the traditional budgeting process by the proponents of the beyond ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They are the second largest bear in the bear family, and they have a unique white fur that differentiates them from the rest of the bears. This white fur is not only their unique characteristic, but also an amazing tool that God has given them so that they can survive in the wild. In order to better understand polar bear, one must understand their habits, their characteristics, and the dangers they are facing. First of all it s a question that everyone has, what do they eat? Their diet depends on high fat content in seal fat, this is one of the few stuff that can provide them enough calories to maintain their survival and to pass down their genes. They usually eat seals. Ringed seals are eaten by the females and little ones, and the males hunt the bearded seals, which are bigger than the ringed seals. In the good times when they have access to much food, they may eat only the bladder and the skin of the seal because that s the fattest part. However, when times are not that good, they will also eat other stuff if it is available. They will hunt whales if they are trapped, they will also accept small animals and any carcass within their reach. Unlike some bears, they don t have the habit of storing food. After they finish eating, they will leave the rest of the body for scavengers. Sometimes the scavengers might be other polar bears that failed their hunt.
