The document discusses various design elements used in a magazine to attract readers, including:
- Using bright colors like red, orange, yellow and black to catch the reader's eye on the cover.
- Positioning the cover star on the right side to allow for listing of stories on the left without obstructing the face.
- Making the contents page more unique by incorporating a band logo rather than just shapes.
- Keeping the double page spread minimal to draw readers to the text and photos rather than other design elements.
- Choosing photos for the cover and spreads that feature eye contact and facial expressions to attract readers.

1. How did you attract/address
your audience
AS Media Studies
2. Aesthetics
The bright colours that I have used here will immediately
catch the eye of the reader and encourage them to buy
the magazine. I decided to chose the colours
red, orange, yellow and black as I think that they stand
out against each other but mainly because I wanted the
theme of fire to run throughout the cover. Most of my
puffs and shapes are quite plain and standard as I wanted
the reader to be attracted to the text with in the shapes
Rather than the shapes themselves. I think that using
yellow for the majority of the font was a good choice as it
is easily distinguishable from the background. Placing a
drop shadow on each piece of text ensure that the text
looks 3D instead of looking flat and fake. I decided to
position my cover star to the right of the cover as it
meant that I could have negative space to list the sub
stories and other images and puffs down the left of the
page, without obstructing his face to make it a main
feature for the reader. Conventionally I put the price and
the web address on the barcode to ensure that it looked
professional for the reader.
3. Aesthetics
Once again I have used bold colours to try to
get the attention of the reader. By using a
black background I have avoided the
conventional white background purposely to
make the magazine look unique and edgy. I did
the editor’s letter in a different colour red to
the other more orange/red o the page to make
it an eye catching feature and to try and make
it stand out at the reader rather than looking
like just another piece of text. I erased some of
the edging of my banners, to try and give the
magazine a grungy distressed look. Instead of
just using circles I used the shape tool to insert
a star over the top to make it look more
complex and to make the shape look more
unique. I incorporated a band logo into my
contents page because I didn’t just want to
use basic shapes in my design and I thought
that it would make it would draw the reader to
the text about that particular band.
4. Aesthetics
unlike the cover and contents I tried to make the DPS as minimalist as possible, so that
the reader would be drawn to the text and the picture rather than the colours and
pictures around it. By having some of the text in pink I think I have made this more
feminine to ensure that the magazine is equally attractive to both genders. The colour
of the red news tab is similar to the read questions, preventing having too many colours
on the page, and ensuring that it isn’t clashing and confusing for the reader. The way in
which I have still managed to incorporate the other font from the mastheads in my
double page spread makes it look more professional and maintains a strong house style
which is visually pleasing for the reader.
5. Mis en scene
Rather than having a
background I wanted the
reader to be drawn to
his face rather than the
setting so I edited him
onto a red background. I
wanted his angry facial
expression and his
physical appearance to
be the main convention
on the cover. As I think
that he looks like a
professional rock/metal
artist that readers would
be interested in. I also
think that the eye
contact look almost
challenging and gives a
scary aspect to the
photo
6. Mis en scene
I wanted one image to
attract the reader in a more
sexual way like images from
Q and more commercial
magazines. This is why I
took the photo ad a close
up, so that I could catch the
finer details like the strands
of hair and the eye contact.
Unlike all of the other
images that I have used this
image still has it’s
background as it is a
motion shot. I think that
just this small image adds
another dimension to the
contents and be very
attractive for the reader.
In this particular
photo the way
that his hands
are in the air
makes it look like
he is pointing at
the reader and
makes it look
more personal
along with the
eye contact.
7. Mis en scene
Again I
decided not to
have a
background on
this picture as
I think that
unless the
shot is a
motion shot, a
background
looks strange
on a double
page spread
image. The
eye contact
and almost
slouched pose
makes him
look
approachable
and open.
8. Mode of Address and Buzz Words
Through out each of my pieces I maintain a direct almost abrupt mode
of address. “submit your application now!” this adopts a bossy
demeaning tone when using the interrogative, which is very common
in most rock magazines, like metal hammer rock sound and kerrang.
The exclamation mark furthers the aggression and makes it sound like
a command. I have done this to comply with the rock/metal genre, like
most professional magazine do. The text is also very informal, as I think
that the informal talkative style is more appealing to my target
audience. A convention I have used to attract my audience is buzz
words. Capitalising buzz words and placing them in puffs or shapes will
attract my readers as it will form an incentive. A word such as
“exclusive” makes the reader willing to buy that particular magazine
instead of a competing magazine which wont have the same interview
9. Incentive banners
Here I have used two banners.
The first has a unique
opportunity to get involved
with a popular metal music
festival, which will be very
appealing to the reader as a lot
of the people who listen to rock
are involved I bands them
selves. My base banner includes
the majority of bands that I
have in the magazine on the
reasoning's that most readers
will like at least one band, and
so will be encouraged to buy
the magazine.
