How Did James Naismith Cause And Effect
James Naismith, Cause and effect If you want to learn how to invent a sport you came to the right man. My name is James Naismith. I was born in
1861 in Almonte, Canada. I was orphaned at a very early age in life and was brought up by my aunt and uncle and went to Bennies Corners High

Basketball is a very popular sport around the world. The game is simple, shoot the ball in the basket, and whichever team has the most points at the
end of the game wins. It is a great game, and wouldn't be possible without James Naismith. He had a rough early life, but then worked past it and had
success in the rest of his life. He did well in college and invented basketball all by himself. He has an interesting life story. James Naismith was born on
November 6, 1861. He was born in Almonte, Canada. Early in his life he lived with his mother and father, both Scottish immigrants. When James was

He thought of old childhood games, such as duck on a rock. The goal was to throw a stone at the "duck" (rock) and try to knock it over first. Then,
he got an idea. At this point, there were only two days left to finish making up this sport, so he didn't have enough time to come up with new
equipment. He needed a goal and a ball. For the goal, he decided to use a peach basket. At that time, he just decided to use a soccer ball to throw in
the peach baskets. He set up the peach baskets and explained the rules. Soon, the gym was full of people watching, and playing. Everyone was
having a great time. Basketball was invented on December 21, 1891, when James was at the age of thirty. Then, teams started forming around town.
Women started playing. Then, it started to become a popular sport throughout America. A few years after, basketball started evolving. The baskets
were now made of rope. The backboard was added. One of the first women basketball players was named Maude Sherman. James soon met Maude
and they became good friends. Not long after that, they got married on June 20, 1894. They had five children together. "In 1895, James and Maude
moved to Denver, Colorado. James then became the director of physical education at the largest YMCA in the country." (Wycoff

improved so much since they the game was first invented. The hoops have a glass/plastic backboard instead of a wooden backboard and a stronger

Dr. James Naismith: The Sport Of Basketball
Basketball has been around for about one hundred and twenty five years and over twenty six million Americans play basketball. It began on
December 1, 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts by Canadian physical education instructor James Naismith. They started to play the game at an
International Training School of the Young Men's Christian Association known as the YMCA. He invented the game trying to keep young athletes in
shape during the cold. It consisted of 9 players on each team. Also they used peach baskets and a soccer style ball. The objective of the game was to
throw the basketball into the fruit basket. I think that because so many people around the world play basketball, they should know how the game was
originally played! The game of basketball originally started off with thirteen basic rules. One of the rules Dr.James Naismith created was, "No

This discussion will be on the topic of basketball. Basketball is a fun sport. It is a game played between two teams of five players. During the
game, the players score goals by throwing a ball through a netted hoop which is fixed above each end of the court. A person has to stay in shape to
run up and down the floor. In 1891, Dr.James Naismith invented the game of basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts. To this day, people still play this
sport. Dr. James Naismith was born on November 6, 1861, to the late Margaret and John Naismith. Dr. Naismith was not the only child; he had five
other siblings. Dr. Naismith was born and raised in Canada. When he got older, he moved to the United States in the late 1880s. He began teaching at

coach in that area. Basketball is a sport anyone can play. Many people, including women, play basketball. Today, there is the Women's National
Basketball Association (WNBA), the National Basketball Association (NBA), and many more. Much practice is required to be a basketball player. A
person must be able to shoot, dribble, pass, play defense, shoot free throws, three pointers, layups, and many more skills. Also included are hand–eye
coordination, Basketball I.Q., and physical/mental strength. Basketball is also a community sport. Some people may play in open gyms, on personal
outside courts, or at local parks. Basketball could help communities be stronger, friendlier, and more fun. If more people got involved in basketball,

When Did Basketball Start By James Naismith
Basketball was started by James Naismith in December 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He invented Basketball because he teached his class. He
divided 18 students to two teams and taught his students the basics of his game. He got the idea from Aztec Indians.
The rules are to dribble the ball, shoot the ball, pass the ball, and play as a team. To dribble the ball, you cannot travel. If you walk with the ball during
the game, the reff's will call it and you will get a turn over. To shoot the ball, you have to be open so that your opponent won't block you. There are

Gulick, the head of the School, Naismith was given 14 days to create an indoor game. The goal of this directive was to provide a creative and healthy
indoor "athletic distraction" for a rowdy class of students during the brutal New England winter. The first professional basketball league was formed in

The first rule is that a ball can be thrown in any direction with one or both hands. The second rule is that a ball can be batted by one or both hands,
but not with a fist. The third rule is that a player can not run with the ball. The player must throw it from where they caught it. The fourth rule is that
the ball cannot be held by anything but the hands. The fifth rule is that you cannot have rough contact with a player. If you do, it would result in a
foul. If the player gets two fouls, they would be disqualified. There also may not be any substitution. The sixth rule is that a foul is striking the ball
with a fist. The seventh rule is that if a team gets three consecutive fouls without the other team getting a foul, the team with no fouls would get a
point. The eighth rule is that a point is scored when the ball stays in the basket. The ninth rule is that where ever the ball goes out of bounds, the first
person that gets it will throw it back in bounds. The tenth rule is that the umpire will determine the fouls. The eleventh rule is that the referee will be
the judge of the ball and where it will be in play. The twelfth rule is that there will be 2 fifteen minute halves. The thirteenth rule is that the side with

How Did Basketball Start?
Have you ever wondered how basketball was made or started? Basketball (or a version of basketball) was played by the early Olmec people of ancient
Mexico about 500 years ago. Instead of the basketballs we use today they played with the decapitated skulls of their conquered foes. But most people
don't consider that basketball so the credit goes to the Canadian Doctor James Naismith. (Bellis, 2014)
The First Game
Naismith had invented the game so the YMCA could play it during the winter season. He hung up two peach baskets to use as hoops. In the original
game that Naismith invented, bouncing the ball was prohibited. The first game of basketball took place on January 20th, 1892 in Springfield,
Massachusetts. The game had 18 players in total with 9 players on each team. Since it wasn't a popular sport at the time they didn't have any money to
invent the basketball so they just played with a soccer ball. After attempting to play the game for over 30 minutes they ended it. The final score was
1–0. William R. Chase was the first man to ever score in a basketball game. Basketball wasn't even called basketball until halfway through the game,
when one of the players suggested calling it basketball. (Faurschou)

Basketball has been around since 1891 it has seen a lot of improvements and some flaws, but with its flaws basketball is a great sport. The game
has grown from a sport with just a few teams in the northeast to a nationwide sport with thirty NBA teams in almost all states and one in Canada.
Basketball has also grown in paying wise, from the original $2.50 for home games and $1.50 for road game to the now league minimum of
$507,336 for players who have not been in the NBA for ten years to $1,448,490 for those who have been playing for ten years. Basketball also saw
in less then 100 years Juwan Howard get offers from the bullets and heat for $100 million for seven years. This was the biggest offer for a player
for at its time. Juwan might have been the most expensive player, but he was far from a star. The NBA's first star was Walt Chamberlain from
UCLA later being joined by future star Bill Russell from San Francisco University. Walt and Bill would open up the door for future superstars like
Michael Jordan, Irving (magic) Johnson, and Nate Archibald. Players like Michael, Magic, and Nate would open up the same door for stars we all
know today as LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, and Kobe Bryant. The doors that opened for them will open for future stars of the game and the
people who dream about becoming a superstar.Basketball is starting to become a global trend with 113 global players being sign to NBA rosters. This

James Naismith: The Invention Of Basketball
James Naismith invented the most popular game played all over the world called basketball in 1891. Naismith had to create a game and state the rules

the court. Little did Naismith know, the game he invented would blow up and become one of the most popular sports worldwide. Naismith, the
inventor of basketball, was born and educated in Canada then moved to Springfield Massachusetts. He wrote the 13 rules at the YMCA for an

Then the court was expanded from less than 1,800 square feet to 3,600 square feet, when 9 players were playing to a side. In 1897 the rule
changed to only 5 players to a side and ever since then that rule has remained the same to this day. Canada was the first country out of The United
States to play the game of basketball. Then in 1893 France started to play the game. Later on in 1894 England, Australia, China, and India started
playing. Then lastly Japan was introduced to the game in 1900. ("Log in." Britannica School. N.p., n.d. Web. 26 Aug. 2016"). The growth of

Sociology Of Basketball Essay
Introduction
In this written assignment, I have chosen to write about the history and the culture of basketball. The reason I have chosen to write about this
particular sport, is because of how it was invented by a Canadian physical education instructor. He was given a special task to carry out, that would
help keep certain athletes conditioned during the cold months, as it was too cold to play baseball or football outside. Little did he know that this game of
basketball would take off, and become one of the biggest sports in not only America, but also the many countries of the world.
I will be discussing my understanding on sports sociology with examples, and references that I have gathered. Sports sociology is the study of the

1941). Dr James Naismith was the instructor for local Springfield college. The school had to come up with ideas how to keep their college students
(young men) active during the winter season, as it was too cold to play football outside, once the season had finished. The gymnasium class were
offered activites such as marching, apparatus work and calisthenics, but these activities were useless substitutes for the more fun games of football
and lacrosse, they played during the warmer seasons. Two previous instructors had tried to facilitate activities to try and interest the young men, but
failed miserably. During a meeting, Naismith mentioned in a letter, and expressed his opinion that " the trouble is not with the men, but with the
system that we are using"(Naismith, J. 1941). So because of this meeting, he was given the task to deal with it. A lot of thought was put into
inventing this new game for the young men. Naismith would incorporate skills from different games including, English rugby (the jump ball),
lacrosse (use of a goal), soccer (the shape and size of the ball), and a game he had played with his childhood friends called duck on a

lot of time, dedication and strategy. The first game ofbasketball started with Aztec and Mayan cultures. There are many factors that take part in the
origin of basketball, such as who, where and why it was invented.

BasВ·ketВ·ball(Л€baskЙ™tЛ
ЊbГґl)– a game played between two teams of five players in which goals are scored by throwing a ball through a netted
hoop fixed above each end of the court.
If you were to ask the average person what basketball is that is the answer you 'll probably get, but it is much more than that. BasВ·ketВ·ball– a game
that has evolved drastically invented by James Naismith played by millions of people around the world. Ah! That 's like it. Basketball has changed a lot
over the past years and still continues to grow, but many wonder "How did this all start?"
The start of basketball began in the early 1890s. Brian Faurschou acknowledges that "Well before James Naismith invented the game of basketball
in 1891, the peoples of Mesoamerica had a very similar game where the point was to get a ball through a hoop." Ancient Mexican people such as the
Aztecs and the Mayans had very similar games to basketball, but instead of a ball they used their conquered foes skulls. He also implies that "The first
basketball type game may have been played by the early Olmec people of Ancient Mexico as early as 500 years ago" (Faurschou).
The game of basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith. Naismith, a P.E. teacher from Canada, invented the game in 1891. At the time James
Naismith as working at the YMCA Training School in Massachusetts ("Who Invented"). Wyckoff implies that James was great at teaching summer
sports, but when winter came, there was a problem. The men at the college were

History of Basketball
There is so much more to the history of basketball than people think. There were so many changes from the beginning of basketball to now. The way
people played has changed dramatically as well as all the rules. The way basketball originated and why it was even thought of is such a shock. Most
people don't think of things like this in the midst of needing something instantly, but James Naismith did.
Some may ask, "Why was basketball invented?" Well here is the answer.... "A young man named James Naismith had just spent two weeks searching
for an indoor athletic activity to occupy his rowdy physical education class during the harsh New England winter months" (History ... Show more

Not only in the way the game was played but also the way it was designed. When the sport was first designed, there used to be an unlimited amount
of players allowed on the court. That was changed to only five players from each team allowed on the court. The amount of time played was
changed also. It used to be three, twenty minute quarters and that was changed to four, seven to eight minute quarters. The "post player" comes
from an old post that was in the middle of the floor during a game. With that post being there, they would run their opponent into the post and call it
a post play. The backboards have probably changed the most, other than the actual basket. The backboards used to be soft wired boards then they
were changed to wooden and have changed from wooden to glass/plastic. The basket was a peach basket at the very beginning. It was eventually
turned to a cylindrical object with a closed net on the bottom and every time someone made a basket the referee would have to push it out with a long
stick.
The book also describes when basketball first started, there used to be a jump ball after every basket made. Which drug the game out even longer, until
someone made the rule that it goes to the opposing team. The baskets made were only worth one point. Then they eventually were worth only two
points. Until someone redrew up the court and made a three point line and anything in front of that was worth two

He was a physical education teacher at Springfield Massachusetts college when he invented the game. Basketball became very popular and the court
size regulations were created in 1924. In 1924 the court's maximum size was 90 by 30 feet and the minimum size of the court was 60 by three feet.
The rim height was 10 feet tall. The original court had no 3–point line. Then in 1951 the NBA added the free–throw line, which was 12 feet from the
basket. The NBA then created the 3–point line in 1979, which was 22 feet between the corners and 23 feet, 9 inches at the top of the key. In 2008 the
court was changed again to what it is today. Some of the changes are that the NCAA and NBA courts regulation size is 94 feet long sideline to
sideline and 50 feet wide. Also the 3–point line was extended 6.75 meters, or around 22.1 feet out from the basket. ("The History of the Basketball

James Naismith: A Very Brief History Of Basketball
The History of Basketball Basketball started with its invention in 1891 and was started by a P.E. teacher at a YMCA. His name was James Naismith.
Once basketball had started rolling, it boomed. It was popular just from a small YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. People eventually picked up on
basketball and this was enjoyed by many Americans and is used a lot. Basketball was just invented because there were people that wanted a way to
stay conditioned during the winter for the upcoming football and lacrosse season. This is something that we enjoy today and is one of the biggest
games in America, because of the evolution of rules, the way the game is played, and evolution of new and old leagues.

some of the rules that are now added onto to create safety and rule for teams. Basketball later boomed so much that they later wanted to create a
league. The first league was called the BAA. That stands for the Basketball Association of America. The initial president was Maurice Podoloff.
This all happened November 1, 1946. The league started with some teams that were from some small cities and then there were those that were
from bigger cities. "On August 3rd, 1949, representatives met in the Empire State Building to finalize a merge" "(NBA is Born.)" The new league
had been joined from the ABA and the NBA. The new league was called the NBA, which had 17 teams that represented both small and big cities.
Some new rules were set in place that outlawed zone defense and added a 24 second shot clock. This sped up the game and made it more enjoyable.

The History of Basketball
Many people know about basketball. It is a common sport loved by almost all, but how much do you really know? Here you will learn about where
basketball was created, when it became a sport, and how it changed over the years.
Basketball was first created by James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts, a large town near the western side of the small state. ("Mapquest.com")
says, with a population of 145,000, Springfield, Massachusetts, it is the largest city in Western New England. According to ("springfieldcollege.edu"),
Naismith worked at Springfield College. This college used to be known as the International YMCA Training School. He was an instructor for a class...

Yet many thing have changed in the sport over the years. The game of basketball has changed with the number of players on the court.
("Hooptactics.com") says, first there was no set rule on the number of players. The idea was that the game could be played by any number of players
at the same time. However, that did not work out. After playing games with up to 50 people, the number of players were cut down and then games
were played with nine players on each side – the reason being that 18 students showed up for Naismith's class. Five players became the mandatory team
size in 1897. Also, they changed the substitutions in the game. Again ("hooptactics.com") says, "in the beginning, players were not allowed to re–enter
the game." Once a player left the game, they were not allowed back in that game. The rule was adjusted twice before they officially allowed a player
to leave and enter a game many times during a game.
As you can see the history of basketball contributes to the way we play sports now. I hope you now have learned when basketball became a sport,
where it was created, and how it has changed over the

When he invented the gym he was offered the job to coach it at Kansas college. He only had 13 rules for the sport which you think is not very many,
but those were the first 13 rules in basketball. As the game got more advanced he had to make more, and more rules for the game. Once the game

him, and he became an orphan with his siblings. That did not stop him from his dreams. James Naismith was the greatest person ever to deal with sports.

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He thought of old childhood games, such as duck on a rock. The goal was to throw a stone at the "duck" (rock) and try to knock it over first. Then, he got an idea. At this point, there were only two days left to finish making up this sport, so he didn't have enough time to come up with new equipment. He needed a goal and a ball. For the goal, he decided to use a peach basket. At that time, he just decided to use a soccer ball to throw in the peach baskets. He set up the peach baskets and explained the rules. Soon, the gym was full of people watching, and playing. Everyone was having a great time. Basketball was invented on December 21, 1891, when James was at the age of thirty. Then, teams started forming around town. Women started playing. Then, it started to become a popular sport throughout America. A few years after, basketball started evolving. The baskets were now made of rope. The backboard was added. One of the first women basketball players was named Maude Sherman. James soon met Maude and they became good friends. Not long after that, they got married on June 20, 1894. They had five children together. "In 1895, James and Maude moved to Denver, Colorado. • 17. How Did Basketball Start? Have you ever wondered how basketball was made or started? Basketball (or a version of basketball) was played by the early Olmec people of ancient Mexico about 500 years ago. Instead of the basketballs we use today they played with the decapitated skulls of their conquered foes. But most people don't consider that basketball so the credit goes to the Canadian Doctor James Naismith. (Bellis, 2014) The First Game Naismith had invented the game so the YMCA could play it during the winter season. He hung up two peach baskets to use as hoops. In the original game that Naismith invented, bouncing the ball was prohibited. The first game of basketball took place on January 20th, 1892 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The game had 18 players in total with 9 players on each team. Since it wasn't a popular sport at the time they didn't have any money to invent the basketball so they just played with a soccer ball. After attempting to play the game for over 30 minutes they ended it. The final score was 1–0. William R. Chase was the first man to ever score in a basketball game. Affection, and value are how KU fans feel towards basketball and the document of the rules. Nevertheless, according to the article, "Sympathy for the Blue Devils: There's No Place Like Home, "Swade's belief that he's on an almost biblical quest would be comical if he weren't so obnoxious"(Bellamy 1). However, the author of this article is biased towards Duke. Describing Swade as obnoxious is one example of the bias Bellamy includes throughout his article. No facts are used to prove that Swade's behavior is obnoxious whatsoever. In fact, Swade's behavior shows how determined he was to bring the rules back to their rightful home. Obnoxious or not, Swade and other KU fans had sentimental feeling towards the document of rules that would have made innumerable amounts of KU fans disappointed if the rules were not placed safely back in Lawrence, Kansas. Correspondingly, the affectionate feelings KU had towards the rules and basketball tied together the reasoning to bring the rules back to their rightful home in Lawrence, ... ("Hooptactics.com") says, first there was no set rule on the number of players. The idea was that the game could be played by any number of players at the same time. However, that did not work out. After playing games with up to 50 people, the number of players were cut down and then games were played with nine players on each side – the reason being that 18 students showed up for Naismith's class. Five players became the mandatory team size in 1897. Also, they changed the substitutions in the game. Again ("hooptactics.com") says, "in the beginning, players were not allowed to re–enter the game." Once a player left the game, they were not allowed back in that game. The rule was adjusted twice before they officially allowed a player to leave and enter a game many times during a game.
