The Volkswagen Group uses technologies such as virtual and augmented reality to meet the ever-increasing demands on innovation. The trend is moving away from real prototypes to virtual models and making important product decisions virtually. Methods from the game industry provide an opportunity to speed up this process even further and experience vehicles more realistically. In this talk an overview of the broad field of automotive engineering is given and it shows how the process is influenced by the trend of digitalization.

COMOS Walkinside is a 3D Virtual Reality viewer specialized on loading massive Proccess Industry 3D models.
Thanks to the fact that COMOS Walkinside can load the full asset while keeping the performance; it allows the users to get fully immerse on the asset while sitting in the office.
COMOS Walkinside ITS allows the user to train on the virtual world even before the asset is ready for start up.
COMOS Walkinside ITS allows different type of training environment such us:
- Familiarization training where the trainee can get familiar in the future working environment even before he can access the asset.
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) trainings where the trainee can get used to the daily tasks he will have to perform.
- What if Scenarios that allow the trainee to be ready to react against different dangerous situations
- HSE Scenarios like fire, gas leak, evacuation, man down... can be set for the trainee to understand the different actions to be taken in such a dangerous scenario
- Collaborative Scenarios allow that multiple trainees are train together as team, which is how they will really work in the real environment
HMIs and user interfaces in general are reactive and event driven by nature. State machines and especially graphical statecharts are a good fit to describe the behaviour of user interfaces. This presentation shows how HMI behaviour can be specified and adapted to different UI technologies.
3D printing is an emerging technology in the automotive industry. Our students have the opportunity to gain some exposure to this technology before leaving our university. We now have 3D printers in the library!

Bosch Technical Trainings Supported by Augmented Reality
Today’s training providers are facing challenges, how to best prepare technicians to understand and maintain vehicles considering new technologies, such as driver assistance systems which are often radar and sensor driven, hybrid and electrical powertrains, connected vehicles. Augmented Reality provides an appropriate way how to explain and visualize such systems and how they operate and are being serviced.
Bosch training centers have started offering Augmented Reality driven trainings using Microsoft’s HoloLens glasses in order to train technicians to initially understand hybrid and electrical powertrains. Trainers have created the training modules using Bosch’s own Augmented Reality platform, and a new AR Training application has been introduced, allowing several HoloLens devices connecting with one joint training session.
The presentation explains about this innovative training application and it’s challenges, it describes the technical solution approach and provides initial feedback and learnings from training sessions that were held in Bosch training facilities and during public events.
