The "Vision Paper" behind the success story of commercetools, created 2011Dirk Hoerig
In 2011 we started the development of a new kind of technology platform for eCommerce. What today is called "Head-less" or "API-first" we kicked off late 2010. To explain our ideas behind it to all our stakeholders at that time - our employees, our investors and our partners - I created that vision paper and released it in April 2011. Not everything that we envisioned at that time came exactly that way, but the core of the concept and its assumptions became reality. A reality that in 2019 was proven with a 145M USD investment round led by Insight Partners for our company that empowers the commerce offerings of companies like AT&T, Express, Lego and VW today. Though this was already quite a journey we still feel that we are at the beginning. So if you are also up to something with your business or you have a great vision for technology and markets - go for it. This document should encourage you to go the extra mile. This is why I released it here. Have fun reading it (and please excuse my language, it was never supposed to be released to the broader public and share with you the un-edited version).
For those who know us: GRID was our initial product we released 2007 based on an existing monolithic JEE platform. We decided 2010 to replace it with a new technology built-from-scratch that we called internally GRID 2.0 - which later became public as SPHERE.IO. Today it's simply the commercetools platform.

Closing the Gap on Digital Manufacturing
The concurrent engineering required for new product designs between design
engineering and manufacturing engineering has always been a critical
focal point for manufacturers to shorten time-to-market, accelerate time-tovolume,
and minimize cost of production. Today, collaboration between
product design (CAD) and manufacturing processes
(CAM) is a robust process due to tight
integration between CAD and CAM and the emergence
of extended PDM and PLM systems.
However, there has not been a corresponding
level of tight integration between CAD/CAM and
production management. But the benefits of exchanging
information between the product
definition domain and production management are becoming clear as
manufacturers move to a collaborative environment. Two leading PLM
suppliers, EDS and IBM/Dassault, have recently launched new programs
to integrate these disparate domains.
Similar to How to Extract More Business Value from PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) (20)
The trajectory of traditional PLM development put adoption in the second phase. Software vendors usually sold slide decks with the great future and then companies and implementation consultants together with PLM service providers were coming to implement what was sold before. It caused many delayed projects, misalignments, failures, and delayed projects. The reality of the implementation was not in sync with the slide decks presented in the boardrooms.
Modern PLM systems make the adoption process different. It all comes down to a single word “experience” we discussed over the course of previous sessions of Demystifying Modern PLM Events. The SaaS technology made systems available instantly to everyone, online training materials, early connection to the sales and marketing team, and ability to provide online support combined with the intelligence of modern platforms changed the experience of the customers.
Which changed the adoption curve and relationships between vendors and customers. In this webinar session Helena Gutierrez, CEO, and co-founder of Share PLM shares his experience and knowledge she has in many implementations of modern PLM systems.
Legacy PLM products are monolithic systems that must be installed, configured, and tuned. The overall process was taking a long time and once done companies were not running fast to make another cycle of the product deployment. Such on-premise product environments served a very large enterprise company spending months (sometimes years) to get it done. It is still an ok process, but there is something new happening - PLM products are turning into services that can be run all the time, all over the world, available to everyone and providing an environment that can be used by multiple companies at the same time, seamlessly upgraded and individually configured for each user and/or company.
Moving from products to services brings a huge difference to the PLM industry and to all customers using new PLM services. Here are the top differentiating features of these products.
Scalable data management
Global data access and instant data sharing
Data intelligence and analytics
The biggest difference is the focus on a broad spectrum of user experience that starts from the first time a potential customer touches the website and goes much further than installation and configuration by connecting to the customers that are using products in real-time. This is the list of what is covered by a modern user experience:
Marketing
Sales
Technical Presale
Application Features
Online Support
New Features
Problem Fixes
Customer feedback and Net Promoter Score
Welcome to the next session of the “Demystifying Modern PLM” event. Our online event is a set of four webinars for manufacturing companies, engineers, contractors, and suppliers who work in a modern online industrial world. In this session, we will speak about how Modern PLM is impacting Sales and Marketing.
In the past, the PLM sales were done in a boardroom during a 4 days workshop when the company was typically gathering their stakeholders and they usually listened to the presentations provided by a vendor and implementing partners. A big event was getting attention, strategy discussion, and a major decision of the company to commit to the next 5 years PLM program.
While nothing from what I just said is obsolete, there is something new in the air now. I call it the cloud mindset. This means that modern days people like to Google everything and learn about every topic online first. Which turns the story of PLM sales upside down. People are less interested in presentations (that can be watched online anyway) and not looking at how to get a big promise for the next five years. Opposite to that companies are interested in experiencing the future products online, learning more about them, checking how they can be used, and then making a decision.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

The Metaverse and AI: how can decision-makers harness the Metaverse for their...Jen Stirrup
The Metaverse is popularized in science fiction, and now it is becoming closer to being a part of our daily lives through the use of social media and shopping companies. How can businesses survive in a world where Artificial Intelligence is becoming the present as well as the future of technology, and how does the Metaverse fit into business strategy when futurist ideas are developing into reality at accelerated rates? How do we do this when our data isn't up to scratch? How can we move towards success with our data so we are set up for the Metaverse when it arrives?
How can you help your company evolve, adapt, and succeed using Artificial Intelligence and the Metaverse to stay ahead of the competition? What are the potential issues, complications, and benefits that these technologies could bring to us and our organizations? In this session, Jen Stirrup will explain how to start thinking about these technologies as an organisation.
Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
