A talk from the Work Track at AWE USA 2017 - the largest conference for AR+VR in Santa Clara, California May 31- June 2, 2017. Andre Radon & Jan Pflueger (Audi AG, Volkswagen AG): Clashing Worlds - Virtual Technologies Meet Automotive Development Requirements for mobility are in great flux. In order to meet new requirements, like innovative mobility concepts, the currently lengthy development process of vehicles has to be rethought. Vehicle engineering is increasingly turning into software development. This leads to new tasks, methods, and responsibilities, which need dynamic input from creative people. The Volkswagen Group uses technologies such as virtual and augmented reality to meet the ever-increasing demands on innovation. The trend is moving away from real prototypes to virtual models and making important product decisions virtually. Methods from the game industry provide an opportunity to speed up this process even further and experience vehicles more realistically. In this talk an overview of the broad field of automotive engineering is given and it shows how the process is influenced by the trend of digitalization. http://AugmentedWorldExpo.com
