Guilt In Sophocles Oedipus The King
Remorse, the feeling of deep guilt and regret for the commitment of a crime or atrocity, is a major
element in classical Greek tragedies. The resulting anguish that the character feels enhances the
magnitude of the catastrophe, as the atrocity is transformed into a powerful emotion bringing it to a
relatable level. In Sophocles s Oedipus Rex, retold by John Bennett and Moira Kerr, and Antigone
translated by E.F. Watling, the reader witnesses how different aspects of each play contribute towards
the final tragic ending. While both Creon and Oedipus exhibit feelings of remorse, Oedipus displays a
higher degree of contrition as a result of his hamartia, his thanatos and the impact that family and
secondary characters have towards his anagnorisis. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Creon is now conscious that he has, unintentionally, killed his only son. The chorus conveys his
feelings of anguish as they say by the burden that proves too well the guilt, no other man s but his
alone (Sophocles 15). However it is only the words of his dying wife . . . and with her dying breath
cursed you, their slayer that make him realize the wrongdoings of his actions. It is then when he
recognizes that, had he not been stubborn and prideful, his son and wife would still be alive. It is the
shepherd s proclamation about the baby he had left all those years ago that make Oedipus realize the
effects of his actions. The story says, And the shepherd told his story . . . given the child of Laius to a
messenger, who would take the baby to be raised by the king of Corinth (Bennett Kerr 163). This is
where he begins to feel those feelings of remorse and despair and sentences himself to a life in exile
and blindness because he had killed his real father while also marrying his own mother, eventually
bearing children of his own with

Essay Bulimia Nervosa
BULIMIA NERVOSA 307.51 (F50.2)
Introduction
Individuals diagnosed with bulimia nervosa undertake frequent binge eating, followed by expelling
the food, typically by inducing vomiting, but also through exercising and the use of laxative agents,
diuretics, and enemas (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). The binge eating occurrences are
often prompted by a negative perception of one s body image, temporarily alleviated by the binge
eating episode. Since the individual with bulimia nervosa is overanxious about body weight, purging
of the food is viewed as a necessity. This is in contrast to binge eating disorder, which does not
involve the purging of food after an excess of food consumption (Bulik et al., 2012). Furthermore,
although ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is an additional feature that must be present alongside these symptoms in order for a patient to
be diagnosed with bulimia nervosa: any binge eating events followed by compensation needs to be
relatively frequent. Specifically, if these events take place at a minimum of one time per week over a 3
month timespan then a diagnosis of bulimia nervosa may be made. Although these are the symptoms
that must be present in order for a diagnosis of bulimia nervosa to be made, there are often other
symptoms that accompany bulimia nervosa. Signs of psychosis have been found in patients with
eating disorders like bulimia nervosa (Miotto et al., 2010). Moreover, those with bulimia nervosa
frequently have the feeling that there is something flawed with their mind, and that others are at fault
for their problems (Miotto et al., 2010). In addition, there is evidence that a feeling of loneliness is
correlated with the occurrence of bulimia nervosa (Levine, 2012), highlighting the psychological
dynamics that are at play behind this disorder.
Causes of Bulimia Nervosa: from genetics to environment
The environmental and biological mechanisms that underlie bulimia nervosa have been researched in
some depth. The principle mechanisms that give rise to bulimia nervosa may be classified into two
groups: genetic variables at play and environmental factors that impact the patient.
There is a considerable body of evidence

Tissues and Cell Structures
Tissues are groupings of cells with similar functions. There are four main kinds of human tissues:
Muscle Tissue
Muscular tissue is made up of cells that have sliding protein (actin, a globular protein, and myosin)
filaments. As these filaments slide over each other, they cause the cell to contract. Cells are arranged
in cables within cables, twined around each other, so that when a muscle contracts, it is actually
millions of cells contracting synchronously. There are three types of muscle tissue; cardiac muscle that
operates in the heart; skeletal muscle which is used for locomotion (among other functions) and is
found all over the body; and smooth muscle which is found in a variety of organs (such as the stomach
and bladder) and in blood vessels. Smooth muscle also causes our hair to stand on end.
Nervous Tissue
Nervous tissue makes up the brain and nervous system. It is used to transmit information around the
body for a huge variety of tasks (for example, controlling muscles). Apart from in the brain, it is also
found in the spine and in sensory organs such as the eyes. It is made up of cells called neurons which
transmit electric chemical signals around the body and centrally to the brain. For example, when we
feel pain in our finger, it is caused by sensory input to the nerve cells in the finger, which transmit an
electric impulse to the brain. The brain then translates this impulse into what we call pain.
Epithelial Tissue
Epithelial tissue, among other things,

Tiger Woods
What makes golf the phenomenal sport it is today? Is it the game itself? Some say golf started in
fifteenth century Scotland by men hitting a pebble with a wooden stick. Currently, graphite drivers
routinely send the ball soaring 300 yards. Perhaps it was the golfers who made the game great. Arnold
Palmer brought golf to the masses in the 1950 s and Jack Nicklaus has set records that have yet to be
broken. However, today sports commentators, pro golfers, and weekend duffers, generally agree the
game of golf has been changed forever with the arrival of Tiger Woods. Eldrick Tiger Woods was born
on the 30th of December 1975, the only child to biracial parents Earl, a retired lieutenant in the army,
and Kultida a stay at home ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In short Tiger Wood s made golf cool; he became the Michael Jordan of golf. One result of the huge
impact Tiger Woods had on the game of golf was that the amount of prize money rose astronomically.
For example three years prior to the Tiger Woods impact a typical tournament purse was about
$500,000. Currently the typical purse for a PGA tournament could be in excess of $5 million.
Individual annual winnings have increased from Paul Runyan in 1934 ($6,767) to David Duval in
1998 ($2,591,031). There was a significant jump one year later when Tiger earned $6,616,585 in 1999
and finally the phenomenal amount earned for Tiger Woods in 2006 was $9,941,563! It is striking to
see from this data how the purse has increased as Tiger Woods became so dominate on the tour. The
television ratings increase every time Tiger is on TV. I remember when Mickelson and Chris DiMarco
were duking it out in 2004 [during a playoff], my first thought was how strong the ratings would be.
They went down, as opposed to up, in every Masters tournament that Woods has won. The ratings and
popularity of golf have increased since Tiger won the Masters in 1997. Companies such as Nike,
American Express, BMW, and Titleist are willing to contribute more and more money every year for
each tournament s purse. The individual golfers also receive exponentially better endorsement deals.
Major corporations are willing to spend

Support Group field experience Essay
Compulsive gamblers groups were of high interest to me, because my father was an obsessive
gambler. The group was spearheaded by a lady who is a LPC. In Gam Anon the member will
experience relief from anxiety by accepting the fact of powerlessness over the problem in the family.
The heavy load of responsibility for the gambling problem is lifted and the agonizing guilt in regard to
failures is gradually alleviated. The energy wasted in attempts to stop loved ones from gambling can
be channeled into more useful methods of problem solving. The group meets every Thursday. The
only requirement for membership is a desire to stop gambling. There are no dues or fees for Gamblers

I believe that some of the group members will leave differently than before they arrived because of
this particular program and group, The theoretical framework was somewhat dictatorship on today; I
learned that the tone that the facilitator sets for the majority of the session is how the session runs.
This is actually how I figured the sessions would be run, but to be aware that always expect the
unexpected at any time. You must also be ready to adjust to whatever it is happening at that particular
moment. This particular session appears to be more somber with quite a bit of silence and skepticism.
Why this climate I asked myself? I really don t know. I would suggest to the facilitator to have some
kind of activity that she uses as an icebreaker. This would help get the communication going between
the members. A specific skill that I have that would hinder me as an effective group leader is my
ability to shut down once I got ticked off. This skill is useful in other settings to cool down situations.
My last observation session began with the group leader introducing all members present. She also
announced to the group that this was my last time attending. This stage of the sessions was supposed
to be more intense because this was a 6 week program. The group leader was going to be more of a
facilitator during this process allowing the

The Goal Setting Theory By Edwin Locke
The Goal Setting Theory
Name of Student
Institution affiliation
The goal setting theory was developed in 19sos by Edwin Locke. According to it, task performance is
essentially linked to goal setting. That means that higher and better task performance may be achieved
when goal setting is rationally applied, as clear goals inspire workers on optimal performance.
Few words should be said about specifity of the goals which are expexted to be applied. They should
be clear to make it possible for any person to analyze one s own task process. That is particularly
important, as far as in the absence of explicit and challenging goals the crewmembers may not even
consider their personal goals. Furthermore, goals may significantly enhance the performance of an
employee through the learning plans and problem solving approach. As the employee strives to
achieve the goal, his motivation and drive inspires him to learn and maximize his efforts to overcome
challenging tasks.
That is why when CEOs apply the goal setting program in their company it is necessary to clearly
specify the standard of the average number of potholes that can be filled in a day. In addition, one
should raise the bar by setting a more challenging task by establishing a standard 20% higher than the
average.
The implementation of the goal setting theory constitutes of moderators that would enhance or
deteriorate an employee s performance. Feedback, which is the two way communication between the

Analysis Of To Build A Fire By Jack London
A story s setting can be impacted by plot, theme and mood. One thing that impacts setting is plot. An
example of how plot impacts setting is the location. The evidence that I found in the story, To Build a
Fire, by Jack London, to support how the location affects the plot is that it sets the tone. The main
character s goal was get to camp to meet up with his boys . With the weather getting bad and the man
not making it to the location it just makes the story. Could you imagine the story taking place at a
park, or at the beach? The next piece of evidence would of course be how the blizzard affects the
setting of the story. London describes the ground that the man was walking on was a thin sheet of ice
with three feet of snow on top of that. This plays an important part because later in the story the man
starts walking and doesn t notice that he was actually walking on the frozen lake until he falls through.
So with there being a blizzard going on it snowed a lot on the Yukon Mountains. This means you
could see the footprints of other traveler but unfortunately those footprints would be gone in an hour.
The second impact would be theme. In To Build a Fire, there are three themes throughout the story.
Those themes are listen to your elders, to be prepared, and learn from your mistakes. Because of the
time period of the story, people were raised to respect their elders. Unfortunately, the main character
didn t. The man from Sulphur Creek had spoken the truth when telling how cold it sometimes got in
the country, and he had laughed at him at the time! (pg 4) Within a few paragraphs later the man
wishes he would have listened to the old man s advice which was not to travel alone when it gets to 50
degrees below or lower. The second theme discussed throughout the story is how to be prepared.
London tells us that the man that the man did pack but not like he was suppose do. He felt that he was
strong and could handle anything so all he needed was his bag and jacket. Meaning he definitely didn t
pack the correct clothes to wear in a blizzard. That is why he got frostbite. Later we even find out that
the man only had his two biscuits with bacon warm in his jacket for him and his dog. The last theme

The Haunting Of Hill House
The Haunting of Hill House, by Shirley Jackson, revolutionized the horror genre of books. It started a
completely new trend in how horror books were written. Unlike previous books, The Haunting of Hill
House uses terror rather than horror to elicit fear and emotion from the reader and utilizes complex
relationships between the mysterious events in the house and the very different characters in the novel.
At the end of the book, the reader realizes that none of the questions that have been burning through
his or her head have been answered. Jackson refuses to shine a light in every corner, answering the
questions of her readers. Her original and (at that time) never before seen writing style caused readers
to speculate and create theories for their questions, one of which is what in the book haunts Hill
House? Because of this, readers from around the world have been theorizing what exactly stalks the
halls of Hill House and haunts the characters of the book sin 1959, the year the book was published.
There are hundreds of different theories, but in the end they all revolve around two smaller questions:
Was Hill House an entity that haunted its residents or was there something that haunted Hill House?
Before answering these questions, there is one question that all readers who know about Shirley
Jackson ask how was a loving wife and mother able to write such a dark novel that struck fear into
people s heart? To understand how she was capable of this, a deeper knowledge into

The Globalization Of Southwest Airlines
Southwest Airlines is globalizing their company in order to reach a bigger market, and become
competition for other companies. Southwest Airlines has already conquered the domestic market
beating American Airlines, United, and Delta according to Fortune. Access to a new market is what
motivated Southwest to globalize, they are expanding to the south of North America, with their new
assets found in their acquired airline AirTran Airways (LeBeau, 4) . Southwest Airlines has brought
low rates and a great experience to the domestic market, which was warmly received, they now plan to
dip into global market to bring better service to all.
Southwest Airlines has recently acquired AirTran Airways, which was a global company, this
acquisition it put Southwest in a great spot to expand to the global market. Southwest is integrating the
AirTran Airways international stops in Aruba, Jamaica, the Bahamas with their original domestic stops
in Atlanta, Baltimore, and Orlando starting July 1st 2014 according to an article in US Today. Next
they are looking to service 6 Latin American destinations including Belize City, Cancun, Mexico City,
Puerto Vallarta, and San Jose del Cabo/ Los Cabos starting in October 2015 (Zacks Equity Research, 1

People s anxiety levels will be tested through their heart rates. The resting heart rate of 30 people will

The reason it is believed the experiment will turn out this way is they will have a majority of the video
to anticipate when what is going to happen, so their heart rate will gradually increase before they see
the frightening part of the video, at which point their blood pressure and heart rate should spike
suddenly. It will also be taken into account how easily somebody gets frightened. That will play an
important role in how much the data changes. For the lab, 30 people have been chosen as the test
subjects. The people were chosen at random; there was no equation used in choosing who was picked
for the lab. The subjects were split into two groups; one would be told that they are going to see a
video that will give them good feelings, and then negatives ones suddenly, and the other group would
only be told that they are going to see a video, no details. Their resting heart rate Was taken, and
recorded it on a table, and then had them watch the video they were randomly assigned to.
Immediately after they had finished the video, their heart rates were tested again, and recorded any
changes in their diastole, systole, and their pulse. Each of the test subjects was tested separately, and

academic journal Raymond Carver, Male and Female Interventions in Cathedral (Sasani, 2014).

men and women writers. Cathedral starts with a first person narrator narrating in plain and flat

very beginning of Cathedral , the absence of a persuasive or convincing style of writing is very
suggestive of the presence of a male narrator through whose eyes the events are seen. The introduction
of the bizarre situation of Cathedral tellingly represents a distancing strategy and establishes the so
called manly distance between the reader and the story narrated by a male

The Social Sciences Essay
The Hawthorne Studies is one of the most well known series of experiments of the social sciences in
industrial history. The objective of the experiments were to establish how an individual is influenced
not only by their own abilities, but by their working environment and the people they work with, both
fellow workers and supervisors. To gain a better understanding of what the Hawthorne studies were,
why they were conducted, and how they have impacted management practices, one must first
understand the history behind the key contributors of this study and the location where the studies
took place, the Western Electric Company. However, the studies did receive criticism, some of which
was considered fairly harsh, such as from Alex Carey The Hawthorne studies were conducted by
Harvard s Business School Industrial Research Group, George Elton Mayo, and Fritz J.

Sensitivity Analysis
In general sensitivity analysis, the most influencing parameters are identified through building a
statistical linear model, partial t test, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Sensitivity analysis was
conducted through Design of experiments (DoE) in order to determine the most influencing geological
parameters on the Gas Assisted Gravity Drainage process performance. DoE combines multi level of
each parameter to create many computer experiments evaluated by the compositional reservoir

Moreover, this fact can be also observed in Figure ~ref{fig:sa1lm} that decorates the component
residual plots for each parameter. If a variable has a horizontal straight line of residual, it has no effect
on the response and should be removed from the linear model, specifically the porosity variable.
Figure ~ref{fig:sa1_lm} shows the basic diagnostic plots for the full linear model. The residuals vs.
fitted plot is used to determine if the linear relationship between the predictors (parameters) and
outcome factors are captured by the model. An accurate model will have a residuals vs. fitted plot with
a horizontal line with residuals above and below it without forming a pattern or grouping, as seen in
the top left plot. Moreover, the normal Q Q plot, shown in the top right plot, is used to determine if the
residuals are normally distributed. A good normal distribution will have a normal Q Q plot which
follows a straight line, as do our results. Furthermore, the Scale Location plot shows if the residuals
are spread equally along all ranges of the predictors. Ideally, the residuals should be randomly spread
across all fitted values and not tend to one area, as ours do in the bottom left plot. Likewise, the
Residuals vs Leverage plot determines how big of an impact outliers points have on the regression
curve. Additionally, outliers away from the Cook s distance will have a large

Why Are Visual Aids Important In A Presentation
I. Theory 1. Why are visual aids crucial in a presentation? Visual aids are crucial in a presentation
because visual aids often generate a clearer impression and more memorable rather than just words
spoken. Presentation with images or videos can make your presentation more interesting and not
tedious. And human more easily understand something through visualizing rather than listening.

The Power of the Sky Goddess Nut In Egyptian Mythology (Outline)
ABSTRACT
On the ceiling of the Hypostyle Hall in the Temple of Hathor are seven bands of astronomical figures
showing the Romans signs of the zodiac, vultures and winged sun disks. Stretching over these painted
raised reliefs is a depiction of the sky goddess Nut, the mother of Osiris, Isis, Nephthys, Horus and
Seth. Nut was depicted as the sky. She takes on the role of mother to the stars and the sun, swallowing
the sun god each night and giving birth to the sun each day, thus controlling the passage of time. Nut
also controlled the passage of the deceased between life and death. Her important role was often
demonstrated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She was separated from Nut by Shu to give order to the universe. This is illustrated in tomb paintings,
which show her body arched over the Earth as her father Shu supports her with upraised arms.
She gave birth to Isis, Osiris, Nephthys, Seth and Horus.
NUT AND THE SUN GOD:
As described in pyramid texts, Nut controls the rising and setting of the sun. She gives birth to the sun
god Ra each day, causing the sun to rise into the sky. When the sun sets, Nut is swallowing the Re
until the next morning, when she will give birth to him again.
II. THE FUNCTION OF NUT IN EGYPTIAN ART
NUT AS THE BEARER OF THE GODS:
Nut is described as bearer of the gods. She plays an important role as mother of the king by giving the
king safe passage into the afterlife where he may then achieve life among the gods.
NUT AS THE KEEPER OF TIME:
Nut was known to be the keeper of time as she bears the sun daily and controls the seasonal movement
of the sun. She is shown in the Dendera temple next to the Dendera zodiac. Her body is also depicted
as a celestial map in earlier paintings of coffin lids. This showed Nut s powerful control over the
movements of constellations, thus showing that her presence is vital to the passage of time.
Other texts indicate Nut s reunification with Geb is what causes

Inequality In Modern Society
It has almost been a decade since the financially crisis of 2008 sent the United States and global
economy on the edge of collapse. Even though the global economy didn t collapse millions of people
still lost their job, saving accounts, and homes. People all over the country were financially ruined and
many will never be able to reacquire their lost money. After the dust had settled from the housing
crises in 2008 the United States was able to rebound and strengthened its economy.
There was one thing that stood out from this disaster, not one top bank executive was tried or
convicted. Not one bank representative went to prison. It seemed the very wealthy individuals and
banks were immune to the housing crash. The government had no problem bailing out the banking
institution which brought on this crises. It had been made clear there was a significant inequality
between the wealthy and everyone else. The inequality difference between the rich and everyone else
is effecting more than the numbers in a bank account but also wear down the foundation of modern
societies.
In the article How Inequality Erodes the foundation of Modern Societies author Robert Reich, who is
chancellor s professor of public policy at the University of Californian, Berkeley, identifies the utmost
single greatest threat to Western democracies is extreme inequality of it citizens. He states, This is

Bullies Vs Bystanders
Your clothes are ugly. Your hair is in a mess. Gross, you need to shave. The smallest things could
make such a big impact on someone. A lot of people are bullied in different ways like, cyber, physical,
or verbal. Bullies are worse than bystanders because they are the ones who start doing the damage on
someone. For an example, some people have never experienced bullying, and so when they do they
start making the victim s life worse and it may be suicide. Bullies also make the person feel bad about
their self. These were just a couple of things. First of all, bullies are the worse than bystanders. They
are the ones who starts the cruel bullying. Many bullies start bullying to feel like their in a group so

Belonging Between I Am Here And I Love You Analysis
Do our relationships define who we are and the way we act around others? In this essay we will be
talking about the fears of rejection and how sometimes relationships help define who we are in reality.
Our relationships define who we are because they describe what kind of person we are and how we
act.
Fear and vulnerability are not always the problem in our lives. It brings ups and downs, for example in
the article The Real Secret To Intimacy , it talks about how people are scared to be in a relationship
because they think they are going to get rejected. A quote from the text is, Vacillating between I am
here and I love you...and I m going to reveal my innermost to you...and I am scared to death that you ll

A couple years ago I had a best friend, He was always by my side and was always protecting me. As
we grew up we started getting apart from each other. Was it because we found something about each
other and didn t want to tell one another, so we decided that going our own way would be the best.
Our relationship got us together for a while we both had good things in common and that was what
made us like siblings. Now that we have grown and know things about each other we still talk because
we had that fear of rejection but we went through it and it came out to be a positive thing in our
friendship.
In Valediction there are two best friends that play football and started stealing. John ended up getting
caught and pete was called into the office. Pete was asked to confess but he said he wasn t involved.
You aren t who I thought you were , said john. This shows that they knew each other and had trust in
one another but pete ended up staying quiet and didn t say anything.
Relationships define how we act and who we truly are. Going through vulnerability is good in a
relationship because it helps one another see who we truly are and helps us gain trust. How are you in

Quilting
The Feminist Dynamic of Lucille Clifton
Quilting bees were occasions for women to gather bringing discarded scraps of material, which they
masterfully transformed, into works of art. The bee was also a social gathering where women told
tales, exchanged ideas, and encouraged one another. Lucille Clifton s collection of poetry entitled
Quilting continues the wonderful tradition by skillfully bringing together poems that entertain, inform,
and encourage. Two of Clifton s poems, eve s version and a woman who loves, are excellent examples
of the quilting process where material is re worked to reveal a perspective that is female. The poem,
eve s version defies the negative issues that have arisen from the Christian tradition of ... Show more

Feminine sensuality and the feminist voice have been effectively subverted in this example of the
perfect woman.
Lucille Clifton redresses the Christian narrative in her poem, eve s version. She begins the poem by
asserting that women are responsible for maintaining control over their lives. Genesis, according to
Clifton, establishes that Lucifer is the creation of the female mind. Eve is given the power to tell her
own story and she states that, smooth talker / slides into my dreams / and fills them with apple (74).
Lucifer is not viewed as a powerful being but as the product of Eve s dream. The dream is an illusion
while Eve is the reality and the source of power in the text. Eve accepts ownership of the dream; it is
hers and Clifton makes it clear that Eve is in control of Lucifer and the apple. She avoids the
traditional trap of ignorance that society has perpetuated with the male version of the creation myth.
The control of the apple is very significant. The apple has always been a symbol of the basis for man s
problems. The apple in Clifton s poem is a metaphor for feminine sensuality and alludes to the
feminist power dynamic. The truth about the apple is revealed by Eve, who states,
apple snug as my breast
in the palm of my hand apple sleek apple sweet and bright in my mouth. (74)
It is apparent that Eve has control of the apple; it

Perfume Analysis Of Perfume
Perfume, by Suskind conforms to conventional standards of the horror genre. The author takes
advantage of this conformity by making Grenouille into the typical horror genre killer or monster to
produce a story with a chilling and dark atmosphere. The author effectively uses both characterization
and stylistic features to develop and shape Grenouille s character into such monster.
According to horror conventions a story must have a monster, whether it be a serial killer or
supernatural entity There is usually an element involving death. For example, a murderer, a ghostly
presence. (Crouse 4). Grenouille s character can fit into the former of these two categories as a
murder. Throughout the book he develops into a monster by taking several lives in many different
settings. For instance his first kill involves the remorseless strangulation of a young girl in Paris She
was so frozen with terror at the sight of him that he had plenty of time to put his hands on her
throat...keeping his eyes closed tight as he strangled her...When she laid dead he laid her on the
ground. (suskind 42 43). Notice the description of Grenouille s first murder and the language the
author uses to describe the agony the victim feels compared to the feelings of the main character. The
victim is frozen in terror while Grenouille has plenty of time to put his hand on her throat. the victim
dies she laid dead and the way he handles the body laid her on the ground. . The amount of detail to

An Array Of Patterns Of Nonrandom Mating
Species that mate assortatively choose their mate according to their own phenotypic characteristics
(Molles Jr. Cahill Jr., 2014). It is a term used to describe an array of patterns of nonrandom mating
(Molles Jr. Cahill Jr., 2014). It encompasses a correlation, which can be positive or negative, between
the male and female phenotypes, similarities or dissimilarities, respectively (Ng Williams, 2014).
Assortative mating has several impacts on the evolution of a species or population. When it is positive
it can increase homozygous characteristics, thus decreasing the less favorable intermediate phenotypes
and going more towards the phenotypes that increase fitness and survival but can also work to keep
the species/population phenotypically the same when it is thriving (Molles Jr. Cahill Jr., 2014). It also
increases speciation, especially sympatric speciation (Molles Jr. Cahill Jr., 2014). By comparison,
negative assortative mating can increase heterozygous characteristics, this is favorable to create a
stabilizing evolution for the species (Molles Jr. Cahill Jr., 2014). Species can choose the way they
mate, depending on what is best for the species, and there can be a mixture of the species for the
intermediate phenotypes versus the extreme phenotypes (Ng Williams, 2014). In each of the three
studies the species (the convict cichlid fish (Amatitlania siquia), bridge spider (Larinioides
sclopetarius), and dioecious mangrove snail (Littoraria ardouiniana))

How Junk Food Can End Obesity
In David Freedman s article, How Junk Food Can End Obesity (2013), he begins by discussing his
endeavors to search for wholesome food. He continues to come across food items that claim to be
healthy and void of processed junk, but all he finds are items high in calories or the expense is too
much for an average American. He argues that wholesome foods are actually just as bad, if not even
worse, than junk food and that the Big Food industry has the technology available to make food
healthier, but still retain its appeal. Freedman mentions continuously throughout his article that
Americans who are most at risk of becoming obese are those who cannot afford healthy foods,
completely defeating the purpose of the wholefoods movement. He ... Show more content on

The solution, in his view, is to replace Big Food s engineered, edible evil through public education and
regulation with fresh, unprocessed, local, seasonal, real food. (Freedman). Pollan has increased spite
for nutritionism, which is the idea behind packing healthier ingredients into processed foods which is
what Freedman is advocating for. Pollan s view is much the same as some scientists, food activists,
nutritionists, and celebrity chefs. He has had such an influence that the Silicon Valley caters to the
wholefoods movement and the progression to familiarizing the masses with simpler eating habits
(Freedman). However, being an area full of technological endeavors, the Silicon Valley sees
technology as the culprit as well. The New York Times Magazine s food writer, Mark Bittman also
shares views with Pollan. In fact, Bittman has even written a cookbook on how to eat better. While
most are more wholesome there are still few recipes that are high in fat. One of his recipes consists of
corn being sautéed in bacon fat and then topped with bacon (Freedman).
Freedman argues that technology would help revolutionize the American diet. He supports this with
his experiences to different restaurants and how good the food was, how much it cost him, and then
whether or not the food itself is actually good for the body. His experiences allows the reader to
connect with Freedman, by showing that he also struggles with the never ending fight to eat

Conflict Theory And Symbolic Interactionism
Sociology is the function of the human society, and social problems among us. There are three
different theories that I will be discussing in this essay. The theories are symbolic interactionism, The
conflict theory and functional analysis perspectives. These perspectives help make up the way society
thinks as a whole. All three of these perspectives are alike, as much as they are different. Symbolic
interactionism helps explain both of our individual personalities and the ways the human society is
linked together (p.27). It also helps us differentiate social order and change through a process. The
teachings of symbolic interactionism comes mostly from George Herbert Mead But,George was not
the only one that influenced the thoughts and ideas of symbolic interactionism. Symbolic interaction is
theoretical perspective so it is still changing and evolving. It also has four kinds of understandings in
the population and environment. One of the understandings is that symbolic interactionism is to
understand why people engage or do not engage in social growth of the population . Symbolic
Interactionism assumes that people from different social backgrounds, and different cultures may see
different social issues within their social community. George Mead,Charles Cooley and Herbert
Blumer shaped symbolic interactionism on the predictions of yourself causing you to behave a certain
way so it becomes true. Structural functionalism is a theory that explains why society

and destructive natural disasters and have caused huge damages to population in recent history. The
Tsunami of 2004 struck Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand mainly and marginally many other
countries scaled 9.0 on hector scale. Tsunamis can be initiated by many means but this one was
triggered by an earthquake. The coastal cities of areas struck were ruined. In the living history, this
Tsunami is considered the deadliest of all. It is recorded to have killed about two hundred thousand
people (The Center for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters 2009). The affected areas received
billions of dollars in aids but could not be built again in a day the way they were destroyed. The 2004
Tsunami destroyed the fishery, agriculture, residence and transport system of the affected areas.

Environmental Effects Of Environmental Pollution
It is estimated that approximately 2.4 million people in the United States are affected physically by
pollution every year. Pollution is harmful substances in the air that affect the environment and
poisonous gases are released in the atmosphere. There several types of pollution, which includes:
water, land, and air pollution. All three are very harmful to Earth, and has a dangerous effect in the
end, which is included, but not limited to global warming. Pollution that is in the air can eventually
lead to health problems among humans, and can even affect the environment for Mother Nature itself,
and also animals. Respiratory and lung diseases can result from air pollution over the course of years.
Water pollution effects aquatic animals, which are consumed by humans, and could lead to even
bigger problems overall. Pollution over land can lead to major problems with the soil and groundwater
used to grow these plants, which are also food that is consumed for the human, animal, and insect
population.
The air that we breathe is a mix of gases that encircles the Earth s crust. Those gases known as
nitrogen and oxygen are the two gases that makes up twenty one percent of the atmosphere, and are
known as permanent gases. When that gas go through some type of contraction, it is known to be
carbon dioxide and water vapor, and that s what assist the cycle and growth of plants, photosynthesis
overall, and burning of fossils fuels (Harris, ).
According to the Salem Encyclopedia, air pollution comes from natural and human made resources.
Natural made resources would be pollen from plants that are released and usually causes allergy for
humans, which could result in seriousness. Pollen is the most common causes in allergy in the United
States as of today. It is produced naturally by trees, flowers, grass, and weeds. When the body notice
pollen in the system, it reacts as if pollen is a harmful substance, and when that happens, an allergic
reaction occurs. Some other natural sources are gases and the after substances that come from volcano,
dust, and decomposing matter. Man made resources would include automobiles, airplanes, and
airborne viruses. Global warming is affected greatly by carbon dioxide which is known as the

performance is reliant on consumer s income and their willingness to spend. The growing consumer

Since the recession hit in 2007, more power has shifted into the hands of buyers as
supermarkets like Tesco offering the biggest discounts in the UK and Sainsbury s offering of
substitute products too (Mintel, 2010). This shows the responsiveness and flexibility towards
consumer needs in the supermarket industry.
2.3 THREAT OF SUBSTITUTES Substitutes do not entirely replace existing products but may
introduce new technology or reduce the costs of producing the same product (Porter, 1980).
Substitutes may limit the profits in an industry by keeping their prices down (Porter, 1980). The threat
of substitution is quite high in this industry because consumers are able to substitute to other major
retailers, convenience stores, niche product outlets, restaurants, bakeries, butchers and farmers
(Coriolis Research, 2004). Supermarkets like Tesco and ASDA have a range of products and services
that have close substitutes, effecting price elasticity of demand because the market is sensitive to price
(IBISWorld). The demand for a particular brand or retailer will increase or decrease concurrent to the
movement of price in comparison to its competition (IBISWorld). The UK supermarkets are always
trying to increase the quality of products and services resulting in a constant need to differentiate
products and services from competition to make them less price sensitive.

Salvador Late or Early includes figurative language all throughout the short story. For example,
Salvador with eyes the color of caterpillar, (Paragraph 1, Line 1) is a metaphor suggesting
metamorphosis and even though he is a caterpillar stuck inside its cocoon, he will soon become a
beautiful, graceful butterfly. This metaphor gives rise to the artistic voice and thematic meaning
because the message this short story is trying to send is that no matter how worthless one may feel and
if they think that they ll never have enough power to hatch out of their cocoon, in the end, they will
always become the beautiful, graceful butterfly they were all along. Another example of figurative
language in Salvador Late or Early is a metaphor in paragraph 2: Arturito has dropped the cigar box of
crayons, has let go the hundred little fingers of red, green, yellow, blue, and nub of black sticks that
tumble and spill over and beyond the asphalt puddles... This symbolizes a rainbow after a storm, and
the deeper meaning behind this symbolism is that although Salvador is caught in the middle of a brutal
storm, the sun will soon come out and he will find a rainbow. One example of figurative language in
Eleven is when Rachel uses similes such as Because the way you grow old is kind of like an onion or

greater than a single span Simon Armitage shows how hard it is to let go of your child. Duffy and
Armitage represent different parent child relationships. Ann Duffy s poem is about a relationship
between a mother and daughter. In Before you were mine , Duffy perceives her mother when she was
young and how things have changed since she had her child. The poet has a feeling of regret and
thinks its her fault that her mother lost some of her energy and being that bold girl winking in
Portobello . Duffy wishes her mother still lived a fun life even after she was born. Whereas in Simon
Armitage s poem, the mother struggle to let go of the son. Armitage writes that his mother s fingertips
still pinch the pinch meaning she cannot bear to let her son go which creates tension because the son
doesn t feel the same way. The poets are able to show how different kinds of parent child relationships
can reflect on how they feel about one another in the world. Duffy builds picture of her mother and
friends when she says on the corner you laugh on and her mother wearing a polka dot dress and then
mentions blows round your legs . Marilyne . The word Marilyne shows that the mother

Industry anlysis of Retail Grocery Industry Essays
Industry Analysis
In order to analyze an industry, it is important to determine where it is in the industry lifecycle. During
the 1970 s and 1980 s the retail grocery industry was expanding at a phenomenal rate. Throughout this
boom period, the number of large grocery stores was rising and forcing the existing Mom and Pop
grocery stores out of the industry.
In the early 1990 s, the retail grocery industry began leaving the growth stage and entered the maturity
stage in the industry lifecycle. This was caused by increased market saturation and slowing growth
rates. Between 1995 and 1996 the growth rates were the lowest they had been in the past twenty years.
The main reason for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Other grocers have decided to taken an alternative route to the low pricing strategy. They have decided
to introduce customer loyalty programs to attract and retain customers such as advantage cards. They
also use these programs to gain valuable information about their consumers. They then use this
information in their marketing and operating strategies.
Porter s five forces of competition framework can be a valuable tool in analyzing an industry. Porter s
five forces of competition include: competition from substitutes, entrants, rivals, supplier power, and
buyer power. We will now analyze the retail grocery industry according to Porter s five forces. (this is
straight out of the Barnes and Noble report I wasn t sure if we should cite this or not)
Substitutes
The main substitute to buying your food from a grocer is going out to eat. A 2002 Gallop poll shows
that Americans eating more meals outside of the home than ever before. When examining today s
changing supermarket consumer in Progressive Grocer, Buck Jones made this observation: To get the
total picture we need to look outside the supermarket arena at how customers are using other retail
outlets to satisfy the needs that we could be addressing. The success

Ninety percent of cocaine that enters the United States comes from Mexico. In exchange Mexico buys

Essay On Aksum
In the documentary Guns, Germs, and Steel, the Professor Jared Diamond asserts that the first
developed civilizations had a huge head start due to their geographical location, which allowed them
to live a period of growth. His argument is perceptible in many civilizations developments such as
Aksum s. Located in northern Ethiopia and Eritrea, Aksum was one of the first developed African
civilizations; indeed, the kingdom experienced a period of rising towards the first century. This rising
resulted from the advantages of its position in altitude, from the sustainable agriculture system
developed with the main crop Teff and also from the interactions with regions in Asia through the red
sea. Therefore, Aksum developed a bright ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Indeed, the text mentioned, At that altitude the temperature is more congenial and the diseases
common in the lowlands are absent (Aksum 205). This passage shows that pandemics and epidemics
were less frequent. Consequently, people were less exposed to the damages of these sicknesses which
would have provoked an instability in the kingdom in matter of social and economic life money spent
to cure people, there are not enough people for the activities, medicines need to be fabricated.
Additionally, the climate was influenced by the altitude. To illustrate, it is mentioned, the elevated
land masses also force moisture laden winds up to levels at which clouds form and rain falls (Aksum
205). In this passage, it is shown that the altitude enhanced the water cycle which engendered an
increase of rains; therefore, the kingdom had a variety of plants but also different animals as there was
a rich vegetation. As a result, the kingdom had nutritious crops and the diverse fauna enhanced the
agriculture with the plough and provided fertilizers. Conclusively due to the altitude, Aksumites were
protected from illnesses frequent in the lowlands and the land had a diversity of fauna and flora
because of the abundance of

The Night Circus Analysis
The Night Circus shows up without warning. It becomes an instant success. It proves the impossible,
possible. It treats all your senses, either with the black and white tents, or the unique caramel scent in
the air. It welcomes everyone to get lost in clouds, experience impossible feats by illusionists and
acrobats, or stumble upon a more hidden tent with sensations in a bottle. But the most exclusive
characteristic is the fact that it only opens at night. Welcome to Le Cirque des Rêves, but beyond the
circus, there is a competition between two different approaches to magic and illusions. This is an
exceptional story, The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, follows the path of three people. Two of
which are the contestants in the competition, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

notice and meets Celia, who is now joined by Hector. The man in the gray suit talks to Hector about
another competition, Hector willingly agrees to have his daughter play for him, meanwhile, the man in
the gray suit, Alexander, doesn t have a competitor in mind yet. A few months later Hector Bowen
dies, making Celia Bowen independent. She spends the next few years practicing for the competition
that she has no idea about. She is not alone the ghost of her dad constantly criticizing her about
everything she does. When auditions for the circus come around, she is the only female and the
youngest auditioning. She gets the part after her audition. During her audition, a boy with a clipboard
is recording her every move. As important as those notes may be, the most valuable piece of
information he discovers is who is competitor

Class Differences in Blood Brothers, by Willy Russell Essay
Willy Russell creates a play to show us the class differences that existed in Liverpool in the 1980 s. He
does this by showing us the contrasting lives of the two boys and their mothers. Mrs Lyons has an
easy life and Mrs Johnston has a hard life and has to work hard to earn a living. The same applies to
the boys as Mickey has the hard life and Eddie has the easy life. Willy Russell also shows us that
education, living conditions, housing and wealth can be affected as a direct result of your class and
social background. This meant that the people from working class backgrounds had a harder life
because they didn t have the same opportunities. During the 1980 s a lot of people were made
redundant because mills and factories closed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She is trying to earn a living as a cleaner which is a poor job and she is struggling because a cleaner
can t afford to feed seven mouths.
Finally Russell shows us that she is in such a desperate situation that she ends up giving her child
away. This makes you feel sorry for her because she is on her own and has to cope with everything
herself.
This tells us that because of her social background her life chances are limited. Russell shows us she is
uneducated through her superstition. Today if a woman is left alone then she gets help from the
government through income support, child benefit and other kinds of financial backing. But at this
time the government didn t offer financial help to the people so many people like Mrs Johnston
suffered. But life is still not equal because many people still can t afford designer clothes or afford to
send their children to private school.
This has changed now because then the government didn t provide any financial help for single mums.
Also at this time there were high levels of redundancies and unemployment. This meant it was harder
for her to get a job and provide for her family. When she says Next week
I ll be earning, there ll be loads of stuff to eat . This suggests that she is looking for work to make her
life better. At the time this was written, people lived in overcrowded homes in the slums of the cities.
This meant that living conditions were poor

Zeus God Of Lightning
Long,Long ago there was a God named Zeus, God of lightning. Zeus loved having the ability of being
able to strike other Gods and Goddesses with his lightning bolts. Whenever Zeus would see a God or
Goddess making a mistake, he would strike them right in the rear end. The Gods that Zeus would
strike frequently were Hermes, messenger god, and Hades, God of riches. Zeus would strike
Goddesses, but not as often as he would strike the two Gods. Whenever Zeus would strike a God or
Goddess he would rarely miss, but whenever he did miss, the bolt would keep traveling until it
traveled through the clouds of the sky human beings lived under. Sometimes when Zeus would miss a
God or Goddess he would get frustrated and would start one lightning bolt after another, scarring and
harming the humans.

Zeus immediately started to become furious and his face started to become red. The Gods didn t know
what they did wrong but Zeus suddenly began throwing his lightning bolts at the Gods. One after the
other, Zeus would strike them right on their rear ends. During this temper tantrum Zeus was having, he
missed the Gods more than hitting them. Ounce Zeus calmed down and realized he was overreacting,
he took a moment to see what he did the the humans and all the trees and stuff like that. Instead of
seeing mostly all Green, he saw flames of the fire he started. The humans houses were burning down,
and everything was destroyed. Zeus almost started crying because he felt bad for what he had done.
From that day on ,Zeus never threw lightning bolts again but, sometimes while its raining out and it s
all gloomy, Zeus sometimes throws a couple lightning strikes thinking that if anything would catch on
fire, the rain would put it

Fetus Lead Contamination
My company has consistently tried to reduce lead exposure to its employee s. In fact, they are the ones
that initiated programs to decrease the lead exposure to its workers. Whenever employees receive a
doctor s report stating that his or her lead blood levels are high, they would be transferred out with
benefits. It s been proven that lead is toxic and can have ill effects on an unborn child, and these
effects may not manifest themselves immediately at birth. In addition to that, lead levels that may be
safe for a fully grown adult are still toxic to a developing infant fetus. The policy established in 1977
did not result in protecting women and their children from excess lead levels. During the beginning
stages of conception, the ill effects ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In any realm of the world, it is always better to be safe than sorry. The decision made should be that
the company change it policy and implement the one that requires complete exclusions of women with
childbearing capacity from high lead exposure positions. According to the law book,
Consequentialism deals with the ethics and morality of the consequence of actions instead of the
actual actions themselves, so in other words, lying itself is not unethical, but the results of lying may
indeed be unethical. While it may not be fair or necessarily ethical to exclude women from those toxic
environments, the end result of the policy change would be ethical because it would prevent the lead
from ever having the chance of affecting the potential unplanned child. The potential unborn child is
the most affected from the policy change and stands to gain the most out of it; by implementing the
policy, it would give the children of any unplanned pregnancies the opportunity to live a normal life
without any defects due to the absence of toxic lead levels. The end result of a healthy baby justifies
the means of potential unethical exclusion of women from a toxic even if they want to environment. In
order to enforce and monitor the policy, any potential eligible women who wish to work in the toxic
lead environment would be subject to a medical examination in order to confirm that the woman is

  • 2. Guilt In Sophocles Oedipus The King Remorse, the feeling of deep guilt and regret for the commitment of a crime or atrocity, is a major element in classical Greek tragedies. The resulting anguish that the character feels enhances the magnitude of the catastrophe, as the atrocity is transformed into a powerful emotion bringing it to a relatable level. In Sophocles s Oedipus Rex, retold by John Bennett and Moira Kerr, and Antigone translated by E.F. Watling, the reader witnesses how different aspects of each play contribute towards the final tragic ending. While both Creon and Oedipus exhibit feelings of remorse, Oedipus displays a higher degree of contrition as a result of his hamartia, his thanatos and the impact that family and secondary characters have towards his anagnorisis. ... The chorus conveys his feelings of anguish as they say by the burden that proves too well the guilt, no other man s but his alone (Sophocles 15). However it is only the words of his dying wife . . . and with her dying breath cursed you, their slayer that make him realize the wrongdoings of his actions. It is then when he recognizes that, had he not been stubborn and prideful, his son and wife would still be alive. It is the shepherd s proclamation about the baby he had left all those years ago that make Oedipus realize the effects of his actions. The story says, And the shepherd told his story . . . given the child of Laius to a messenger, who would take the baby to be raised by the king of Corinth (Bennett Kerr 163). This is where he begins to feel those feelings of remorse and despair and sentences himself to a life in exile and blindness because he had killed his real father while also marrying his own mother, eventually bearing children of his own with ... Essay Bulimia Nervosa BULIMIA NERVOSA 307.51 (F50.2) Introduction Individuals diagnosed with bulimia nervosa undertake frequent binge eating, followed by expelling the food, typically by inducing vomiting, but also through exercising and the use of laxative agents, diuretics, and enemas (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). The binge eating occurrences are often prompted by a negative perception of one s body image, temporarily alleviated by the binge eating episode. Since the individual with bulimia nervosa is overanxious about body weight, purging of the food is viewed as a necessity. This is in contrast to binge eating disorder, which does not involve the purging of food after an excess of food consumption (Bulik et al., 2012). Furthermore, although ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is an additional feature that must be present alongside these symptoms in order for a patient to be diagnosed with bulimia nervosa: any binge eating events followed by compensation needs to be relatively frequent. Specifically, if these events take place at a minimum of one time per week over a 3 month timespan then a diagnosis of bulimia nervosa may be made. Although these are the symptoms that must be present in order for a diagnosis of bulimia nervosa to be made, there are often other symptoms that accompany bulimia nervosa. Signs of psychosis have been found in patients with eating disorders like bulimia nervosa (Miotto et al., 2010). Moreover, those with bulimia nervosa frequently have the feeling that there is something flawed with their mind, and that others are at fault for their problems (Miotto et al., 2010). In addition, there is evidence that a feeling of loneliness is correlated with the occurrence of bulimia nervosa (Levine, 2012), highlighting the psychological dynamics that are at play behind this disorder. Causes of Bulimia Nervosa: from genetics to environment The environmental and biological mechanisms that underlie bulimia nervosa have been researched in some depth. The principle mechanisms that give rise to bulimia nervosa may be classified into two groups: genetic variables at play and environmental factors that impact the patient. • 4. Tissues and Cell Structures Tissues are groupings of cells with similar functions. There are four main kinds of human tissues: Muscle Tissue Muscular tissue is made up of cells that have sliding protein (actin, a globular protein, and myosin) filaments. As these filaments slide over each other, they cause the cell to contract. Cells are arranged in cables within cables, twined around each other, so that when a muscle contracts, it is actually millions of cells contracting synchronously. There are three types of muscle tissue; cardiac muscle that operates in the heart; skeletal muscle which is used for locomotion (among other functions) and is found all over the body; and smooth muscle which is found in a variety of organs (such as the stomach and bladder) and in blood vessels. Smooth muscle also causes our hair to stand on end. Nervous Tissue Nervous tissue makes up the brain and nervous system. It is used to transmit information around the body for a huge variety of tasks (for example, controlling muscles). Apart from in the brain, it is also found in the spine and in sensory organs such as the eyes. It is made up of cells called neurons which transmit electric chemical signals around the body and centrally to the brain. For example, when we feel pain in our finger, it is caused by sensory input to the nerve cells in the finger, which transmit an electric impulse to the brain. The brain then translates this impulse into what we call pain. Epithelial Tissue Epithelial tissue, among other things, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Tiger Woods What makes golf the phenomenal sport it is today? Is it the game itself? Some say golf started in fifteenth century Scotland by men hitting a pebble with a wooden stick. Currently, graphite drivers routinely send the ball soaring 300 yards. Perhaps it was the golfers who made the game great. Arnold Palmer brought golf to the masses in the 1950 s and Jack Nicklaus has set records that have yet to be broken. However, today sports commentators, pro golfers, and weekend duffers, generally agree the game of golf has been changed forever with the arrival of Tiger Woods. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In short Tiger Wood s made golf cool; he became the Michael Jordan of golf. One result of the huge impact Tiger Woods had on the game of golf was that the amount of prize money rose astronomically. For example three years prior to the Tiger Woods impact a typical tournament purse was about $500,000. Currently the typical purse for a PGA tournament could be in excess of $5 million. Individual annual winnings have increased from Paul Runyan in 1934 ($6,767) to David Duval in 1998 ($2,591,031). There was a significant jump one year later when Tiger earned $6,616,585 in 1999 and finally the phenomenal amount earned for Tiger Woods in 2006 was $9,941,563! It is striking to see from this data how the purse has increased as Tiger Woods became so dominate on the tour. The television ratings increase every time Tiger is on TV. I remember when Mickelson and Chris DiMarco were duking it out in 2004 [during a playoff], my first thought was how strong the ratings would be. They went down, as opposed to up, in every Masters tournament that Woods has won. The ratings and popularity of golf have increased since Tiger won the Masters in 1997. Companies such as Nike, American Express, BMW, and Titleist are willing to contribute more and more money every year for each tournament s purse. The individual golfers also receive exponentially better endorsement deals. Major corporations are willing to spend ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Goal Setting Theory By Edwin Locke The Goal Setting Theory Name of Student Institution affiliation The goal setting theory was developed in 19sos by Edwin Locke. According to it, task performance is essentially linked to goal setting. That means that higher and better task performance may be achieved when goal setting is rationally applied, as clear goals inspire workers on optimal performance. Few words should be said about specifity of the goals which are expexted to be applied. They should be clear to make it possible for any person to analyze one s own task process. That is particularly important, as far as in the absence of explicit and challenging goals the crewmembers may not even consider their personal goals. Furthermore, goals may significantly enhance the performance of an employee through the learning plans and problem solving approach. As the employee strives to achieve the goal, his motivation and drive inspires him to learn and maximize his efforts to overcome challenging tasks. That is why when CEOs apply the goal setting program in their company it is necessary to clearly specify the standard of the average number of potholes that can be filled in a day. In addition, one should raise the bar by setting a more challenging task by establishing a standard 20% higher than the average. The implementation of the goal setting theory constitutes of moderators that would enhance or deteriorate an employee s performance. Feedback, which is the two way communication between the ... • 8. Analysis Of To Build A Fire By Jack London A story s setting can be impacted by plot, theme and mood. One thing that impacts setting is plot. An example of how plot impacts setting is the location. The evidence that I found in the story, To Build a Fire, by Jack London, to support how the location affects the plot is that it sets the tone. The main character s goal was get to camp to meet up with his boys . With the weather getting bad and the man not making it to the location it just makes the story. Could you imagine the story taking place at a park, or at the beach? The next piece of evidence would of course be how the blizzard affects the setting of the story. London describes the ground that the man was walking on was a thin sheet of ice with three feet of snow on top of that. This plays an important part because later in the story the man starts walking and doesn t notice that he was actually walking on the frozen lake until he falls through. So with there being a blizzard going on it snowed a lot on the Yukon Mountains. This means you could see the footprints of other traveler but unfortunately those footprints would be gone in an hour. The second impact would be theme. In To Build a Fire, there are three themes throughout the story. Those themes are listen to your elders, to be prepared, and learn from your mistakes. Because of the time period of the story, people were raised to respect their elders. Unfortunately, the main character didn t. The man from Sulphur Creek had spoken the truth when telling how cold it sometimes got in the country, and he had laughed at him at the time! (pg 4) Within a few paragraphs later the man wishes he would have listened to the old man s advice which was not to travel alone when it gets to 50 degrees below or lower. The second theme discussed throughout the story is how to be prepared. London tells us that the man that the man did pack but not like he was suppose do. He felt that he was strong and could handle anything so all he needed was his bag and jacket. Meaning he definitely didn t pack the correct clothes to wear in a blizzard. That is why he got frostbite. Later we even find out that the man only had his two biscuits with bacon warm in his jacket for him and his dog. The last theme ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Haunting Of Hill House The Haunting of Hill House, by Shirley Jackson, revolutionized the horror genre of books. It started a completely new trend in how horror books were written. Unlike previous books, The Haunting of Hill House uses terror rather than horror to elicit fear and emotion from the reader and utilizes complex relationships between the mysterious events in the house and the very different characters in the novel. At the end of the book, the reader realizes that none of the questions that have been burning through his or her head have been answered. Jackson refuses to shine a light in every corner, answering the questions of her readers. Her original and (at that time) never before seen writing style caused readers to speculate and create theories for their questions, one of which is what in the book haunts Hill House? Because of this, readers from around the world have been theorizing what exactly stalks the halls of Hill House and haunts the characters of the book sin 1959, the year the book was published. There are hundreds of different theories, but in the end they all revolve around two smaller questions: Was Hill House an entity that haunted its residents or was there something that haunted Hill House? Before answering these questions, there is one question that all readers who know about Shirley Jackson ask how was a loving wife and mother able to write such a dark novel that struck fear into people s heart? Figure ~ref{fig:sa1_lm} shows the basic diagnostic plots for the full linear model. The residuals vs. fitted plot is used to determine if the linear relationship between the predictors (parameters) and outcome factors are captured by the model. An accurate model will have a residuals vs. fitted plot with a horizontal line with residuals above and below it without forming a pattern or grouping, as seen in the top left plot. Moreover, the normal Q Q plot, shown in the top right plot, is used to determine if the residuals are normally distributed. A good normal distribution will have a normal Q Q plot which follows a straight line, as do our results. Furthermore, the Scale Location plot shows if the residuals are spread equally along all ranges of the predictors. Ideally, the residuals should be randomly spread across all fitted values and not tend to one area, as ours do in the bottom left plot. She gives birth to the sun god Ra each day, causing the sun to rise into the sky. When the sun sets, Nut is swallowing the Re until the next morning, when she will give birth to him again. II. THE FUNCTION OF NUT IN EGYPTIAN ART NUT AS THE BEARER OF THE GODS: Nut is described as bearer of the gods. She plays an important role as mother of the king by giving the king safe passage into the afterlife where he may then achieve life among the gods. NUT AS THE KEEPER OF TIME: Nut was known to be the keeper of time as she bears the sun daily and controls the seasonal movement of the sun. She is shown in the Dendera temple next to the Dendera zodiac. Her body is also depicted as a celestial map in earlier paintings of coffin lids. This showed Nut s powerful control over the movements of constellations, thus showing that her presence is vital to the passage of time. • 23. Inequality In Modern Society It has almost been a decade since the financially crisis of 2008 sent the United States and global economy on the edge of collapse. Even though the global economy didn t collapse millions of people still lost their job, saving accounts, and homes. People all over the country were financially ruined and many will never be able to reacquire their lost money. After the dust had settled from the housing crises in 2008 the United States was able to rebound and strengthened its economy. There was one thing that stood out from this disaster, not one top bank executive was tried or convicted. Not one bank representative went to prison. It seemed the very wealthy individuals and banks were immune to the housing crash. The government had no problem bailing out the banking institution which brought on this crises. It had been made clear there was a significant inequality between the wealthy and everyone else. The inequality difference between the rich and everyone else is effecting more than the numbers in a bank account but also wear down the foundation of modern societies. In the article How Inequality Erodes the foundation of Modern Societies author Robert Reich, who is chancellor s professor of public policy at the University of Californian, Berkeley, identifies the utmost single greatest threat to Western democracies is extreme inequality of it citizens. • 25. Belonging Between I Am Here And I Love You Analysis Do our relationships define who we are and the way we act around others? In this essay we will be talking about the fears of rejection and how sometimes relationships help define who we are in reality. Our relationships define who we are because they describe what kind of person we are and how we act. Fear and vulnerability are not always the problem in our lives. It brings ups and downs, for example in the article The Real Secret To Intimacy , it talks about how people are scared to be in a relationship because they think they are going to get rejected. Our relationship got us together for a while we both had good things in common and that was what made us like siblings. Now that we have grown and know things about each other we still talk because we had that fear of rejection but we went through it and it came out to be a positive thing in our friendship. In Valediction there are two best friends that play football and started stealing. John ended up getting caught and pete was called into the office. Pete was asked to confess but he said he wasn t involved. You aren t who I thought you were , said john. Feminine sensuality and the feminist voice have been effectively subverted in this example of the perfect woman. Lucille Clifton redresses the Christian narrative in her poem, eve s version. She begins the poem by asserting that women are responsible for maintaining control over their lives. Genesis, according to Clifton, establishes that Lucifer is the creation of the female mind. Eve is given the power to tell her own story and she states that, smooth talker / slides into my dreams / and fills them with apple (74). Lucifer is not viewed as a powerful being but as the product of Eve s dream. The dream is an illusion while Eve is the reality and the source of power in the text. Eve accepts ownership of the dream; it is hers and Clifton makes it clear that Eve is in control of Lucifer and the apple. She avoids the traditional trap of ignorance that society has perpetuated with the male version of the creation myth. The control of the apple is very significant. The apple has always been a symbol of the basis for man s problems. The apple in Clifton s poem is a metaphor for feminine sensuality and alludes to the feminist power dynamic. The truth about the apple is revealed by Eve, who states, apple snug as my breast in the palm of my hand apple sleek apple sweet and bright in my mouth. • 27. Perfume Analysis Of Perfume Perfume, by Suskind conforms to conventional standards of the horror genre. The author takes advantage of this conformity by making Grenouille into the typical horror genre killer or monster to produce a story with a chilling and dark atmosphere. The author effectively uses both characterization and stylistic features to develop and shape Grenouille s character into such monster. According to horror conventions a story must have a monster, whether it be a serial killer or supernatural entity There is usually an element involving death. For example, a murderer, a ghostly presence. (Crouse 4). Grenouille s character can fit into the former of these two categories as a murder. Throughout the book he develops into a monster by taking several lives in many different settings. For instance his first kill involves the remorseless strangulation of a young girl in Paris She was so frozen with terror at the sight of him that he had plenty of time to put his hands on her throat...keeping his eyes closed tight as he strangled her...When she laid dead he laid her on the ground. • 28. An Array Of Patterns Of Nonrandom Mating Species that mate assortatively choose their mate according to their own phenotypic characteristics (Molles Jr. Cahill Jr., 2014). It is a term used to describe an array of patterns of nonrandom mating (Molles Jr. Cahill Jr., 2014). It encompasses a correlation, which can be positive or negative, between the male and female phenotypes, similarities or dissimilarities, respectively (Ng Williams, 2014). Assortative mating has several impacts on the evolution of a species or population. When it is positive it can increase homozygous characteristics, thus decreasing the less favorable intermediate phenotypes and going more towards the phenotypes that increase fitness and survival but can also work to keep the species/population phenotypically the same when it is thriving (Molles Jr. Cahill Jr., 2014). It also increases speciation, especially sympatric speciation (Molles Jr. Cahill Jr., 2014). By comparison, negative assortative mating can increase heterozygous characteristics, this is favorable to create a stabilizing evolution for the species (Molles Jr. Cahill Jr., 2014). Species can choose the way they mate, depending on what is best for the species, and there can be a mixture of the species for the intermediate phenotypes versus the extreme phenotypes (Ng Williams, 2014). He continues to come across food items that claim to be healthy and void of processed junk, but all he finds are items high in calories or the expense is too much for an average American. He argues that wholesome foods are actually just as bad, if not even worse, than junk food and that the Big Food industry has the technology available to make food healthier, but still retain its appeal. Pollan s view is much the same as some scientists, food activists, nutritionists, and celebrity chefs. There several types of pollution, which includes: water, land, and air pollution. All three are very harmful to Earth, and has a dangerous effect in the end, which is included, but not limited to global warming. Pollution that is in the air can eventually lead to health problems among humans, and can even affect the environment for Mother Nature itself, and also animals. Respiratory and lung diseases can result from air pollution over the course of years. Water pollution effects aquatic animals, which are consumed by humans, and could lead to even bigger problems overall. Pollution over land can lead to major problems with the soil and groundwater used to grow these plants, which are also food that is consumed for the human, animal, and insect population. The air that we breathe is a mix of gases that encircles the Earth s crust. Those gases known as nitrogen and oxygen are the two gases that makes up twenty one percent of the atmosphere, and are known as permanent gases. Substitutes may limit the profits in an industry by keeping their prices down (Porter, 1980). The threat of substitution is quite high in this industry because consumers are able to substitute to other major retailers, convenience stores, niche product outlets, restaurants, bakeries, butchers and farmers (Coriolis Research, 2004). • 47. Class Differences in Blood Brothers, by Willy Russell Essay Willy Russell creates a play to show us the class differences that existed in Liverpool in the 1980 s. He does this by showing us the contrasting lives of the two boys and their mothers. Mrs Lyons has an easy life and Mrs Johnston has a hard life and has to work hard to earn a living. The same applies to the boys as Mickey has the hard life and Eddie has the easy life. Willy Russell also shows us that education, living conditions, housing and wealth can be affected as a direct result of your class and social background. This meant that the people from working class backgrounds had a harder life because they didn t have the same opportunities. During the 1980 s a lot of people were made redundant because mills and factories closed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This makes you feel sorry for her because she is on her own and has to cope with everything herself. This tells us that because of her social background her life chances are limited. Russell shows us she is uneducated through her superstition. Today if a woman is left alone then she gets help from the government through income support, child benefit and other kinds of financial backing. But at this time the government didn t offer financial help to the people so many people like Mrs Johnston suffered. But life is still not equal because many people still can t afford designer clothes or afford to send their children to private school. This has changed now because then the government didn t provide any financial help for single mums. Also at this time there were high levels of redundancies and unemployment. This meant it was harder for her to get a job and provide for her family. When she says Next week I ll be earning, there ll be loads of stuff to eat . • 48. Zeus God Of Lightning Long,Long ago there was a God named Zeus, God of lightning. Zeus loved having the ability of being able to strike other Gods and Goddesses with his lightning bolts. Whenever Zeus would see a God or Goddess making a mistake, he would strike them right in the rear end. The Gods that Zeus would strike frequently were Hermes, messenger god, and Hades, God of riches. Zeus would strike Goddesses, but not as often as he would strike the two Gods. Whenever Zeus would strike a God or Goddess he would rarely miss, but whenever he did miss, the bolt would keep traveling until it traveled through the clouds of the sky human beings lived under. Sometimes when Zeus would miss a God or Goddess he would get frustrated and would start one lightning bolt after another, scarring and harming the humans. • 49. Fetus Lead Contamination My company has consistently tried to reduce lead exposure to its employee s. In fact, they are the ones that initiated programs to decrease the lead exposure to its workers. Whenever employees receive a doctor s report stating that his or her lead blood levels are high, they would be transferred out with benefits. It s been proven that lead is toxic and can have ill effects on an unborn child, and these effects may not manifest themselves immediately at birth. In addition to that, lead levels that may be safe for a fully grown adult are still toxic to a developing infant fetus. The policy established in 1977 did not result in protecting women and their children from excess lead levels. During the beginning stages of conception, the ill effects ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In any realm of the world, it is always better to be safe than sorry. The decision made should be that the company change it policy and implement the one that requires complete exclusions of women with childbearing capacity from high lead exposure positions. According to the law book, Consequentialism deals with the ethics and morality of the consequence of actions instead of the actual actions themselves, so in other words, lying itself is not unethical, but the results of lying may indeed be unethical. While it may not be fair or necessarily ethical to exclude women from those toxic environments, the end result of the policy change would be ethical because it would prevent the lead from ever having the chance of affecting the potential unplanned child. The potential unborn child is the most affected from the policy change and stands to gain the most out of it; by implementing the policy, it would give the children of any unplanned pregnancies the opportunity to live a normal life without any defects due to the absence of toxic lead levels. The end result of a healthy baby justifies the means of potential unethical exclusion of women from a toxic even if they want to environment. In order to enforce and monitor the policy, any potential eligible women who wish to work in the toxic lead environment would be subject to a medical examination in order to confirm that the woman is ...
