The homeless population faces many challenges including a lack of safe and affordable housing, health issues due to poverty, difficulties accessing services, and poor educational attainment. They have unstable living situations, being forced to live in temporary accommodation like shelters or on the streets. This makes it hard to plan for the long term when focusing on short term needs of shelter. More public housing and emergency accommodation is needed to address the lack of affordable housing. Access to services that provide basic needs as well as counseling, healthcare, job training, and education can help the homeless population exit homelessness.

Assisted living and adult family homes are rapidly becoming cost-effective options to nursing homes for older people who need help with ADLs but not necessarily 24-hour care. In addition, home care is now the fastest growing component of personal health care expenditures and allow older people to age in place while bringing services such as skilled nursing care, rehabilitation, and personal household care to the person’s home. In recent years, the number of homeless adults age 55 and older has been growing and often face chronic medical, psychiatric, and cognitive disorders that go unattended because of inadequate access to health services. The need for community-based long-term services and supports that allow elders to age in place will grow. And, although future cohorts of elders will have more options, these will depend on their financial resources.

Homeless
- 1. Characteristics: The homeless are people who lack resources and social support and so are forced to live in crisis accommodation in refugees, on the street or in other temporary accommodation.
- 2. Security and safety It is an insecure and unsafe way to live: The homeless may constantly be aware of others who may steal what little possession they have or hurt them physically. It is difficult to make long term plans to beat the cycle of homelessness as short term needs (shelter) are paramount.
- 3. Housing A lack of affordable and safe housing is a significant cause of homelessness as there is not a lot of availability for low cost housing. More public housing and emergency accommodation such as hostels are needed in Australia.
- 4. Health Lack of income, transport and knowledge about available services can make access to appropriate health care more difficult. Experiencing health problems due to their poverty, they may need to access specialists services quickly, but this is not always possible.
- 5. Education However, there are many who are highly educated but have experienced great trauma and now lack the social skills to integrate back into independent living. Centrelink’s Job Placement, Employment and Training program assist the homeless in this area
- 6. Education Poor educational attainment is both a predictor and outcome of homelessness. Many have left school early and may lack the skills to gain adequate employment or to be able to cope with living in a community
- 7. Access to Services They might not know how to access the financial assistance services available to them, so access to information and referral services would also be an important need. Services that assist in obtaining food, clothing and warm bedding, hygiene, bathroom and laundry facilities are provided by some charity services
- 8. Access to Services Access to counselling services may help if stressed. Access to secure housing, adequate health care, assistance to gain employment and educational skills to enable them to live within the community if they are to exit from homelessness
