Photos of People suffering from Poverty around the world
What is Poverty?
Poverty means the state of being
extremely poor or the state of being
inferior in quality or insufficient in
amount.
Why and how is Poverty
happening around the world?
- Almost 3 billion people in the world
live on less than $2.50 a day.
- 1 billion children suffer from
poverty.
- 640 million people do not have
adequate shelter.
- 1 billion people are illiterate due to
shortage of money.
- 400 million people have no access to
safe drinking water.
- 10.6 million children died in 2003
before the age of 5.
- 270 million people have no access to
health care.
Factors affected by Poverty
● Availability of food is affected by poverty especially in children of poor families. These families cannot
afford nutritious food as they have a very small budget and some cannot even afford food in the first place.
● Health is affected by poverty and since they cannot afford medication or basic treatment, they get sick more
often and tend not to cure easily.
● Education is also largely affected by poverty and many cannot afford to attend school or buy its education-
related supplies at a young age therefore many have become illiterate.
● Economy gets impacted by poverty as people living in poverty influences the employment rate heavily, but only can
find low paying jobs due to lack of education.
● Society is affected by poverty as many suffering from poverty are homeless, which results in them having to sleep
on the streets, and most cannot even afford a slum or squatter settlement. The crime rate also tends to increase.
Methods the government should use to stop and end Poverty
- The government should have a rationing exercise for food, water and daily necessities as
most of the countries, the government does not do that so the people do not have enough
food, water and daily necessities.
- The government should host a charity activity or event for the poor and those who does
not have enough food.
- The government should also help to build more schools for the children so they can have
more education and they could also learn the language other say instead of becoming
illiterate.
- The government could build more homes for the people to stay at as many people do not
have a proper home to stay in or lives in slums and squatters, which are very unhygienic,
improper and prone to many vulnerabilities.
What can we do to help prevent and end poverty
around the world?
- Quality education helps provide knowledge and applicable life skills to realise their potentials. They help by
building schools, training teachers and destroying a ‘barrier’ that is obstructing these children from attending school.
- Health care accessibility is essential for sick people especially in children to grow healthy and strong and
they train doctor, nurses and build more health clinics and centres.
- Sanitation is crucial and needed for hygiene and survival from diseases. They build new water points (water
coolers) and try maintaining its standard of hygiene.
- Economic security is important to help overcome poverty and thrive. They try to educate the people to
acquire skills and knowledge needed to secure a livelihood and support families.
- Child participation helps children to learn about human rights and take roles in their community. This can help
them interact about citizenship, expression of views and decision makings that shapes their future and influences the
