Marketing Plan
Unit 07. & 34.
Distribution - ‘Straight-to-video/DVD’
‘Straight-to-video/DVD’
Definition The movie will skip cinematic release and be available
to buy in shops on DVD and sometimes Blu-ray.
Advantage(s) Buyers can pause the movie whenever they like
Disadvantage(s) The film is somewhat less likely to get noticed and will
therefore make little money back.
How could I use this concept? You can get profit from DVD
Distribution – Online Streaming/Streaming Networks
Online Streaming/Streaming Networks
Definition The movie will be available to watch on streaming
services like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+.
Advantage(s) It will be available on the internet and people will find
it easier to watch it online than pay to see it in
cinemas.
Disadvantage(s) The viewers have a lack of ownership for the movie.
How could I use this concept? It can be used well for low budget films that have a
small chance of making back their budget.
Distribution – Cinema Distribution
Cinema Distribution
Definition A film being released in national and/or international
cinemas.
Advantage(s) The film could be noticed by heavily noticed by the
public and the media.
Cinema also generates the most amount of money for
a film.
Disadvantage(s) In a world of streaming some people find it exhausting
and rather costly to go to the cinema to watch the
film.
Also audiences have fears and concerns over COVID.
How could I use this concept? Releasing a film in cinemas can gain it a lot of
attention, more so than streaming.
Distribution – Television Distribution
Television Distribution
Definition Releasing a film via a television channel. All the rights
go to the channel that release it.
Advantage(s) Viewers will find it easier to reach if they have
cable/live TV.
Disadvantage(s) Lack of ownership for viewers, as they will only be
able to watch it when it airs, and it might not be
available to own on DVD or certain streaming
platforms.
How could I use this concept? Sell film to a TV channel and could earn money off
ratings and potentially reruns.
Distribution - Evaluation
I suppose it really depends on what type movie is being distributed. If its something like an
Independently produced romantic drama, that would gain more views from streaming or television
than a cinematic release. Where as something like a big budget sci-fi/action & adventure flick would
benefit more financially from a cinematic release.
I think the best way to distribute a film is via the cinema, because it will have a higher chance of
gaining its money back.
Marketing - Key Art Design
Key Art Design (posters, trailers etc)
Definition Creating style and look of the promotional material for
the film.
Advantage(s) You can make your film look appealing to an audience.
Disadvantage(s) It could take a lot of time and effort to produce this
style. Making it could lead to creative differences
between producers who want to produce different
looks for it.
How could I use this concept? Create a visually artistic look for the film that makes
audiences interested in seeing it.
Marketing – Press Packs
Press Packs
Definition Clips, screenshots & posters that are given to press.
Advantage(s) Giving the public an extra look at what the film is like
without showing trailers. Clips will give people a real
taste of what the film is like in terms of tone.
Good for getting targeted information to journalists
Disadvantage(s) They are targeted at journalists and other
professionals so you have a limited audience.
How could I use this concept? Promote the film to professional journalists who
promote it to audiences.
Marketing – Social Media Promotion
Social Media Promotion
Definition Creating social media accounts that are dedicated to
your film.
Advantage(s) You are able to promote your film on social media and
reach a larger audience.
Disadvantage(s) It can be tricky exporting a piece of footage into the
format required for a video on a certain social media.
How could I use this concept? Upload trailers, posters, clips and mini teasers onto
the social platform in order to promote it.
Marketing - Blogging
Blogging
Definition Advertising websites, films, television brands or
businesses through writing about it online.
Advantage(s) It helps draw attention to your website where you
post your blogs.
Disadvantage(s) A lot of effort may be put into the blog and it might
get little to no attention in return.
How could I use this concept? Show your film to journalists or a group of journalists
and ask them to promote it in their blogs.
Marketing - Websites
Websites
Definition Creating websites that are dedicated to and are all
about your film.
Advantage(s) You can sell interesting information about your film to
interest audiences.
Disadvantage(s) Can be very time consuming.
If the website doesn’t get many clicks it will be wasted
effort.
How could I use this concept? Upload trailers, screenshots and video clips onto the
website to promote the film.
Marketing - Networking events with award/academy members
Networking events with award/academy members
Definition Where you go to meetups/gatherings where people
who vote for awards can hear about your film and you
try to get them to vote for it.
Advantage(s) Celebrities can acknowledge the films existence and
share their thoughts about it to their followers.
They can vote for the film to win whatever award they
think it deserves.
Disadvantage(s) The celebrities might not like the movie and therefore
the whole event would be pointless.
How could I use this concept? Show the movie to popular or currently trending
celebrities so they can share about it online and the
film will have a higher chance of winning.
Marketing - Evaluation
I think social media promotion is the most beneficial to my film,
because people tend to spend a lot of time on social media therefore
the film will have a higher chance of being noticed online than on the
news where press packs are shared.
Exhibition – Test Screenings
Test Screenings
Definition Screen the film to an test audience to get their
reaction to it and listen to how it could be improved.
Advantage(s) I can learn how to improve the film and make it
appeal more to my audience.
Disadvantage(s) The feedback could require delaying the film then
going back to do extensive reshoots which could result
in the film being ruined.
How could I use this concept? Show the film to the audience and ask them what
changes can be made to improve it.
Exhibition – Press Screenings
Press Screenings
Definition Showing the film to the press so they can write about
it and give feedback.
Advantage(s) The press could give positive feedback which will draw
attention from the public and they will be interested
in seeing it.
Disadvantage(s) They might give negative reviews which could lower
the films box office estimations.
How could I use this concept? Positive press reviews will lead to higher box office
numbers and more financial income for the film.
Exhibition – Film Festivals
Film Festivals
Definition I can show my film at an organized event where many
different films are shown.
Advantage(s) Lots of people will see the film and could potentially
receive a standing ovation as soon as it has finished.
There is a chance of the film winning an award from
the festival.
Disadvantage(s) The film wont receive much press coverage and if it
does not win the festival it will gain very little financial
income.
How could I use this concept? Although it will not have much press coverage it will
gain a good name for itself.
Exhibition - Evaluation
• From an artists perspective press screenings are the best source of
exhibition. You receive (hopefully) honest reviews on what people
think of your work and vision, where as test screenings would require
you to change your vision to satisfy the public entirely.
