MARKETING PLAN
Unit 07. & 34.
Distribution - ‘Straight-to-video/DVD’
‘Straight-to-video/DVD’
Definition When a film goes straight to DVD as opposed to premiering in a cinema.
Advantage(s) No need to pay cinemas to screen your film.
Disadvantage(s) Films released straight to DVD are normally considered of a lesser quality. Films
don’t qualify for exceptional awards like Oscars.
How could I use this
concept?
I could release my film straight to DVD.
Distribution – Online Streaming/Streaming
Networks
Online Streaming/Streaming Networks
Definition The live transmission of video and audio directly to
peoples devices allowing them to watch what they want on
demand.
Advantage(s) Costs significantly less to distribute than other means,
sometimes free depending on the platform. Reaches larger
audiences depending on streaming platform.
Disadvantage(s) Lack of viewer ownership of films. Less profits off the film.
Less reach depending on the platform due to a paywall.
How could I use this
concept?
I could release my film on an online streaming platform.
Distribution – Cinema Distribution
Cinema Distribution
Definition Releasing a film in cinemas.
Advantage(s) Films will likely make a higher profit upon box office
release. Films qualify for awards such as the Oscars.
Disadvantage(s) Can be more costly to have films put in cinemas.
How could I use this concept? I could release my film in cinemas.
Distribution – Television Distribution
Television Distribution
Definition Films being distributed to be viewed on
television.
Advantage(s) Large audience to view the film.
Disadvantage(s) Films released directly to television are
usually considered of a lesser quality.
Television slots can be costly.
How could I use this concept? I could release my film on television.
Distribution - Evaluation
In order to distribute my film I will be using an online
streaming platform. I will upload my film to YouTube to
be distributed as my particular target audience
predominately uses streaming platforms and YouTube
allows for large audiences to view the film for free.
Online streaming would also be better as opposed to
the likes of TV or DVD as it is free to upload to,
meaning I cut out distribution costs by opting to
upload to YouTube rather than by having the film
shown on TV or put onto DVD’s to then be
distributed. Online streaming is also easier all around
for viewers to access in order to view the film.
Marketing - Key Art Design
Key Art Design (posters, trailers etc)
Definition Key art design refers to the entire visual identity of the
marketing of the film. This looks at the fonts, images and
colour palates among other details.
Advantage(s) Allows you to develop an identity for the film through art
design.
Disadvantage(s) Changes to the film made after releasing key art design can
lead to confusion and frustration among viewers.
How could I use this
concept?
I can keep a common theme throughout the art design of
the films marketing material, using matching fonts and colour
schemes to keep everything uniform.
Marketing – Press Packs
Press Packs
Definition A pre-packaged set of promotional material given out to the
press to be used in their media.
Advantage(s) Consistent images for the press to use in their media
creation.
Disadvantage(s) You become reliant on the reviews made by the press.
How could I use this
concept?
I can put together a press pack for the press to use when
writing about my film.
Marketing – Social Media Promotion
Social Media Promotion
Definition Using social media platforms such as Facebook and
Instagram to promote your film.
Advantage(s) Social media has extremely large reach.
Disadvantage(s) Users can spam and tarnish the image of your film out of
spite.
How could I use this concept? I could put together social media accounts to promote the
film on.
Marketing - Blogging
Blogging
Definition Regularly uploading new information to a website.
Advantage(s) Allows you to have a single place for all the information
people need about the film.
Disadvantage(s) Very few people read blogs in the modern day.
How could I use this concept? I can start a website and regularly blog about the film on
it.
Marketing - Websites
Websites
Definition A domain online where information can be uploaded and
seen.
Advantage(s) A single place where all the useful information for your film
can be uploaded.
Disadvantage(s) You could be creatively limited as to what you put on the
website depending on other entities involved.
How could I use this concept? I could create a website to upload all necessary information
about the website.
Marketing - Networking events with
award/academy members
Networking events with award/academy members
Definition An event where like minded individuals come together to
exchange information and contact details in order to meet
new people and create mutually beneficial relationships.
Advantage(s) You are able to meet like minded individuals and get
contacts that would be able to help you.
Disadvantage(s) You have to be diplomatic to networkers and people where
it may not be warranted.
How could I use this concept? I could attend a networking event.
Marketing - Evaluation
The best marketing option in my opinion would have
to be social media marketing, and this is what I would
be most likely to use when marketing my film. Social
media marketing can be extremely effective if done
correctly, allowing you to reach up to millions of
people that are already on the platform. Social media
marketing is also free as there is no real need to
spend money on sponsoring the promotional material if
it’s done properly.
Exhibition – Test Screenings
Test Screenings
Definition A screening of a movie that takes place before the full
release in order to get an idea of how an audience would
react to it.
Advantage(s) A test screening allows you to get an idea of how an
audience might react to your film before you release it.
Disadvantage(s) A bad audience reaction could mean that you have to
change parts of the film.
How could I use this concept? I could hold a test screening in order to get an idea of
how people might react to the film.
Exhibition – Press Screenings
Press Screenings
Definition A press screening is a pre-release screening of a film for
critics and press only, allowing them to write about the film
and review it before its release.
Advantage(s) Press screenings can get more attention as the press share
their reviews and opinions on the film before it’s release.
Disadvantage(s) Critics can write bad reviews which can lead to less public
interest.
How could I use this concept? I could hold a press screening to allow the press to review
my film and write about it before its release.
Exhibition – Film Festivals
Film Festivals
Definition An organised presentation which showcases various films.
Advantage(s) Film festivals can draw attention to your film if it is being
screened and it allows more people to see it.
Disadvantage(s) Bad reaction can lead to issues with the distribution of the
film.
How could I use this concept? I could arrange to have my film showcased at a film
festival.
Exhibition - Evaluation
The best option for exhibition, and the one that I
would use, would be test screenings. Test screenings
allow you to see how an audience would react to the
film without the worry about critics leaving bad reviews
if it isn’t up to scratch, something that can be an
issue when using press screenings. Test screening also
give you the opportunity to make any changes to the
film after the screening based on audience reaction.

Online streaming would also be better as opposed to the likes of TV or DVD as it is free to upload to, meaning I cut out distribution costs by opting to upload to YouTube rather than by having the film shown on TV or put onto DVD’s to then be distributed. Online streaming is also easier all around for viewers to access in order to view the film.

Test screening also give you the opportunity to make any changes to the film after the screening based on audience reaction.
