When the economy fell apart, this slide show explained the basic economic principles at work and offered up some terms that were appearing in the paper at the time.
Young adult literature serves an important purpose, if only to give a voice and context to students during this difficult age. This slide show explores bullying and ties it into some popular YA titles (page numbers indicated for reading aloud to students). A kind of book talk and lesson about behavior in one.
I used poetry to introduce students to Maslow, and Maslow to get students to explore poetry. It was a day of self reflection and analysis. My use of Maslow stresses the need to have a safe, belonging environment if students are to succeed academically.
When we created a new middle school team we wanted our new name to be something original and with heft and depth. Asking for suggestions, we wanted our kids to know the full weight of a name and its meaning (and baggage). This works with literature classes, too, and gets kids thinking about symbols and the like.
Our middle school reconfigured our teams, and the older students would not let go of the old system. This is a play on the original five stages, with the words of eighth grader and their tragic drama substituted.
The end of our short metric history unit, this was designed as an overview to the basic themes of why we use metric (or should). A stress on science and the democratic nature of science and ten-based measurements is my cornerstone. I like the stuff about the metric calendar best.
An intro to our metric unit, asking "Why Metric?" The point is that prior systems varied widely from each other and internally, and were based on changing objects like body parts. Metric is based on the Earth (originally), which does not change.
Students explored British culture through food, song and sport. This slide demonstrated how something like fish and chips tells us a lot about a culture (geography, climate and the like). We had used Lord of the Rings as an example of culture through literature. You will have to modify for your use.
Daniel H. Pink wrote last year's hot education book "A Whole New Mind". While it is not perfect, it lays a foundation of skills important for students to succeed. It is how they perceive their world, but not how they think in school. To move from the concrete, I created this overview of Mr. Pink's ideas.
A basic presentation on first, second and third person narratives, with examples of different styles (letter, diary, poetry, etc.) used for the narrative voice. Examples are from YA novels, and it is appropriate for middle school students and older (high school students will be nostalgic for these titles).
A basic description of religion and faith, with a focus on western religion. This is not specific to one religion, but the basic wikipedia definition of religion with visuals. A good introduction.
This is a series of photos designed to give students an idea of what trench warfare and World War I was like. I shut my mouth and have students deconstruct photos and notice details as a class. By the end the "get" it. My main focus is how it began as an adventure, and became a real hell.
Some social scientists have identified eight stages to genocide. These stages help students break down any genocide. I use the "Harry Potter", which the kids are much more familiar with than the Holocaust or Cambodia, to explain the stages. Then, we look at real world examples and apply our understanding.
As the photograph captured reality, art began to capture what was really there. The slide show attempts to capture the paradigm shifts in art from impressionism through surrealism. It is basically pretty pictures in the dark, with some hallmarks of the movements pointed out for students.
A basic history and philosophy of non violent action. It begins with religious views, moves to famous non violent advocates, and includes dissenting voices. A nice introduction.
When "Twilight" peaked and became a movie, this presentation put Bella and Edward's relationship in the context of literary history. It works with any look at romantic doom. The second half is a summary of "Wuthering Heights". Note that the first slide about "Watership Down" was only to suggest a reading; it has nothing to do with the rest of the slide show.
In this age of NCLB schools are scrambling for literacy programs that work. SSR is not rocket science, but so many teachers and schools insist on structuring reading, taking away choice, and expecting failing students to take books home and read. This offers an argument for in-school SSR. It costs nothing, is flexible, and works for all students. Note: There is a lot in the Powerpoint Notes section which does not translate, but you could figure it out from the slides themselves.
Unit 8 - Information and Communication Technology (Paper I).pdfThiyagu K
This slides describes the basic concepts of ICT, basics of Email, Emerging Technology and Digital Initiatives in Education. This presentations aligns with the UGC Paper I syllabus.
We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
