What is meant by Herbal
Plants?
 Herbal plants are plants that grow herbs. The herbs
mostly help in seasoning food and in medicine .
 Alfalfa(Medigo sativa)
 Aloe vera
 Arnica(Arnica montana)
 Ashwagandha(Withania somnifera)
 Papaya(Carica papaya)
 Lavender(Lavandula officinalis)
 Black Radish(Raphanus sativus niger)
 Pumpkin(Cucurbita pepo)
 Pineapple(Ananas comosus)
 Peppermint(Mentha x.peperita)05/19/16 2
Ashwagandha is an herb used in Ayurvedic medicine for a number
of health conditions. Known by the botanical name withania
somnifera, it is a popular medicinal plant in South East Asia and
Southern Europe.
Many people use this for general vitality, although the effects are
not similar to ginseng. Rather than providing restless energy as does
ginseng, ashwagandha often causes relaxation.
 Withania somnifera is widely considered as the Indian
ginseng.
 In Ayurveda, it is classified as a rasayana (rejuvenation) and
expected to promote physical and mental health, rejuvenate
the body in debilitated conditions and increase longevity.
Ashwagandha is used to treat a number of disorders that
affect human health including central nervous system (CNS)
disorders, particularly in epilepsy, stress and
neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and
Alzheimer's disorders, tardive dyskinesia, cerebral ischemia,
and even in the management of drug addiction.
 The most useful usage is to reduce stress and perhaps aid in
sleep05/19/16 4
 All parts of the plant are used in herbal medicine.
 In Ayurveda, the fresh roots are sometimes boiled in milk, prior to
drying, in order to leach out undesirable constituents.
 The berries are used as a substitute for rennet, to coagulate milk in
cheese making.
 Ashwagandha in Sanskrit means "horse's smell", probably originating
from the odor of its root which resembles that of sweaty horse.
 The species name somnifera means "sleep-bearing" in Latin,
indicating it was considered a sedative, but it has been also used for
sexual vitality and as an adaptogen.
 Some herbalists refer to ashwagandha as Indian ginseng, since it is
used in ayurvedic medicine in a way similar to that ginseng is used in
traditional Chinese medicine.

PEPPERMINT
05/19/16 6
Peppermint (Mentha × piperita), also known as M.
balsamea Wild.) is a hybrid mint, a cross
between watermint and spearmint. Peppermint was first
described in 1753 by Carolus Linnaeus from specimens
that had been collected in England; he treated it as
a species, but it is now universally agreed to be a hybrid.
The plant, indigenous to Europe, is now widespread in
cultivation throughout all regions of the world. It is
a herbaceous rhizomatous perennial plant growing to
30–90 cm (12–35 in) tall, with smooth stems, square in
cross section. The rhizomes are wide-spreading, fleshy,
and bare fibrous roots.
The leaves and flowering
tops are used; they are
collected as soon as the
flowers begin to open and
can be dried. The wild form
of the plant is less suitable
for this purpose, with
cultivated plants having been
Peppermint has a
high menthol content,
and is often used in :-
 Tea
for flavouring Ice cream
 Chewing gum
 Toothpaste
Itching and Skin Irritations
Peppermint, when applied topically, has a soothing and
cooling effect on skin irritations caused by hives,
poison ivy, or poison oak.
Tension Headache
One small study suggested that peppermint applied to
the forehead and temples helped reduce headache
symptoms.
Colds and Flu
Peppermint and its main active agent, menthol, are
effective decongestants. Because menthol thins mucus,
it is also a good expectorant, meaning that it helps
loosen phlegm and breaks up coughs. It is soothing and
calming for sore throats (pharyngitis) and dry coughs
as well.

Lavandula (common name lavender) is a genus of 39
known species of flowering plants in the mint family,
Lamiaceae. It is native to the Old World and is found
from Cape Verde and the Canary Islands, Europe
across to northern and eastern Africa, the
Mediterranean, southwest Asia to southeast India.
Many members of the genus are cultivated extensively
in temperate climates as ornamental plants for garden
and landscape use, for use as culinary herbs, and also
commercially for the extraction of essential oils. The
most widely cultivated species, Lavandula angustifolia,
is often referred to as lavender, and there is a colour
named for the shade of the flowers of this species.
LAVENDER
The flower and the oil of lavender are used to make
medicine.
Lavender is used for restlessness, insomnia,
nervousness, and depression. It is also used for a
variety of digestive complaints including meteorism
(abdominal swelling from gas in the intestinal or
peritoneal cavity), loss of appetite, vomiting, nausea,
intestinal gas (flatulence), and upset stomach.
Some people use lavender for painful conditions
including migraine headaches, toothaches, sprains,
nerve pain, sores, and joint pain. It is also used for
acne and cancer, and to promote menstruation.
Health Benefits Of Lavender
By inhalation, lavender is used as aromatherapy for insomnia pain,
and agitation related to dementia.
In foods and beverages, lavender is used as a flavor component.
In manufacturing, lavender is used in pharmaceutical products
and as a fragrance ingredient in soaps, cosmetics, perfumes,
potpourri, and decorations.
Lavender (scientific name Lavandula angustifolia) is commonly
contaminated with related species, including Lavandula hybrida,
which is a cross between Lavandula angustifolia and Lavandula
latifolia, from which lavandin oil is obtained.
How does it work?
Lavender contains an oil that seems to have sedating effects and
might relax certain muscles.
Peppermint (Mentha × piperita, also known as M.
balsamea Willd.) is a hybrid mint, a cross between
watermint and spearmint. The plant, indigenous to
Europe and the Middle East, is now widespread in
cultivation in many regions of the world. It is
found wild ocPeppermint typically occurs in moist
habitats, including stream sides and drainage
ditches. Being a hybrid, it is usually sterile,
producing no seeds and reproducing only
vegetatively, spreading by its rhizomes. If placed,
it can grow anywhere, with a few exceptions
casionally with its parent species.
Peppermint
A favorite herbal medicine of the ancients,
peppermint leaves have been found in Egyptian
pyramids dating back to 1,000 BC. Modern
scientific investigations have now confirmed
that this remarkable plant has over a dozen
healing properties.

Alfalfa has played an important role as a livestock
forage. Its use probably originated in Southeast Asia.
The Arabs fed alfalfa to their horses, claiming it made
the animals swift and strong, and named the legume “Al-
fal-fa” meaning “father of all foods”.
ALFALFA [MEDICAGO
SATIVA]
The medicinal uses of alfalfa stem from anecdotal reports
that the leaves cause diuresis and are useful in the
treatment of kidney, bladder, and prostate disorders. Leaf
preparations have been touted for their anti-arthritic and
antidiabetic activity, for treatment of dyspepsia, and as
an anti-asthmatic. Alfalfa extracts are used in baked
goods, beverages, and prepared foods, and the plant serves
as a commercial source of chlorophyll and carotene.
Scientifically known as Raphanus sativus L. var. niger,
Spanish black radish is a member of the Cruciferae
family, along with Brussel sprouts, spinach, kale and
cabbage. It can be enjoyed raw or cooked, but its strong,
peppery flavor can be neutralized by cooking or peeling for
those with more sensitive palates. Eat Spanish black
radish for its wealth of nutrients and some more specific
health benefits.
BLACK RADISH[RAGHANUS SATIVUS NIGER]
Helps treat Gallstones and Elevated Cholestrol.
Promotes Detoxification.
Protects against Bone Marrow Toxicity.
Improves Intestinal Health etc…..

  • 2. What is meant by Herbal Plants?  Herbal plants are plants that grow herbs.The herbs mostly help in seasoning food and in medicine .  Alfalfa(Medigo sativa)  Aloe vera  Arnica(Arnica montana)  Ashwagandha(Withania somnifera)  Papaya(Carica papaya)  Lavender(Lavandula officinalis)  Black Radish(Raphanus sativus niger)  Pumpkin(Cucurbita pepo)  Pineapple(Ananas comosus)  Peppermint(Mentha x.peperita)05/19/16 2
  • 3. Ashwagandha is an herb used in Ayurvedic medicine for a number of health conditions. Known by the botanical name withania somnifera, it is a popular medicinal plant in South East Asia and Southern Europe. Many people use this for general vitality, although the effects are not similar to ginseng. Rather than providing restless energy as does ginseng, ashwagandha often causes relaxation.
  • 4.  Withania somnifera is widely considered as the Indian ginseng.  In Ayurveda, it is classified as a rasayana (rejuvenation) and expected to promote physical and mental health, rejuvenate the body in debilitated conditions and increase longevity. Ashwagandha is used to treat a number of disorders that affect human health including central nervous system (CNS) disorders, particularly in epilepsy, stress and neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disorders, tardive dyskinesia, cerebral ischemia, and even in the management of drug addiction.  The most useful usage is to reduce stress and perhaps aid in sleep05/19/16 4
  • 5.  All parts of the plant are used in herbal medicine.  In Ayurveda, the fresh roots are sometimes boiled in milk, prior to drying, in order to leach out undesirable constituents.  The berries are used as a substitute for rennet, to coagulate milk in cheese making.  Ashwagandha in Sanskrit means "horse's smell", probably originating from the odor of its root which resembles that of sweaty horse.  The species name somnifera means "sleep-bearing" in Latin, indicating it was considered a sedative, but it has been also used for sexual vitality and as an adaptogen.  Some herbalists refer to ashwagandha as Indian ginseng, since it is used in ayurvedic medicine in a way similar to that ginseng is used in traditional Chinese medicine. 05/19/16 5
  • 7. Peppermint (Mentha × piperita), also known as M. balsamea Wild.) is a hybrid mint, a cross between watermint and spearmint. Peppermint was first described in 1753 by Carolus Linnaeus from specimens that had been collected in England; he treated it as a species, but it is now universally agreed to be a hybrid. The plant, indigenous to Europe, is now widespread in cultivation throughout all regions of the world. It is a herbaceous rhizomatous perennial plant growing to 30–90 cm (12–35 in) tall, with smooth stems, square in cross section. The rhizomes are wide-spreading, fleshy, and bare fibrous roots.
