Hemant Nitturkar is the Project Director for the Cassava Seed System Project at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Nigeria. He gave a presentation on possibilities for India-Nigeria collaboration in agricultural innovation and entrepreneurship for inclusive development. Technical leads of the Africa RISING project in West Africa, East and Southern Africa and Ethiopia took part in a cross learning exchange on sustainable intensification from 28 January to 4 February. The event was organized by donors funding projects on sustainable intensification in Africa and South Asia. A diverse and multi-institutional group of 50 participants from USAID, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, USAID’s Sustainable Intensification Innovation Lab, the Innovation Lab for Small-scale Irrigation, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), CIMMYT, International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) attended the event and shared perspectives on sustainable intensification in African and South Asian contexts. This photo trip report presents highlights and pictures of the event from the perspective of Africa RISING scientists who took part in the exchange visit.

The Tropical Legumes III project aims to improve lives of smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia through increased grain legume productivity and production. The project is a 10-year initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and implemented by ICRISAT, CIAT, IITA, and national agricultural research systems of target countries. The third phase (TL III) seeks to build upon the achievements of the previous two phases with a focus on fewer legumes (chickpea, cowpea, common bean, groundnut) and geographies. TL III convenes its annual meeting alongside the Pan African Grain Legumes and World Cowpea Conference:Grain legumes are a key source of nitrogenrich edible seeds, providing a wide variety of high-protein products and constituting a major source of dietary protein in the diets of the poor in most parts of SSA. Their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen makes legumes excellent components within the various farming systems. Against this backdrop most developmental partners (including ICRISAT) are pushing the legume agenda forward. The TL III project, lead by ICRISAT, is built directly pon the outputs and momentum of Tropical Legumes I (TL I) and Tropical Legumes II (TL II) projects, but is strategically focused on fewer legumes (chickpea, cowpea, common bean and groundnut) and fewer geographies (Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda and India’s Uttar Pradesh). With the focus on firming up country work plans, the TL III community convened its first annual meeting at a very opportune time alongside the Pan African Grain Legumes and World Cowpea Conference [one of the signature events of 2016 International Year of Pulses (declared by the 68th UN General Assembly as “International Year of Pulses”)], during 28 February - 4 March, 2016. The conference was held under the theme “Sustainable grain legume systems for food, income and nutrition security in a rapidly changing environment” and thereafter TL III annual meeting provided a platform for all project implementers to review the progress made under TL III and the way forward to ensure the project achieves its desired goal.

Success of Chickpea Production in North Gondar Zone of Ethiopia
Improved chickpea varieties were introduced to farmers in the North Gondar Zone of Ethiopia through efficient seed systems. Varieties like Arerti, Habru and Natoli were widely adopted with the help of farmer seed grower groups. Productivity increased from 1.4 tons/hectare in 1999 to over 2 tons/hectare currently, above the national average. The complete failure of local varieties due to disease led to even higher adoption of the resistant Habru variety. Over 1200 farmers now grow this variety, and North Gondar contributes significantly to chickpea production in Ethiopia. Ensuring continued supply of quality seed and linking farmers to markets will help sustain interest in chickpea.

Efficient production of high-quality seed for research is an important activity for modern breeding and genebank programs. To bolster this activity, ICRISAT has modernized its seed processing, preparation and grain quality data collection facilities with state-of-the-art machinery and equipment which was inaugurated by Dr Jacqueline Hughes, Director General, ICRISAT, on 18 December. These facilities, set up by the Crop Improvement Operations Team (CIOT) and Genebank, are part of the institute’s efforts to modernize crop breeding and genetic resources conservation. The seeds are threshed, dried, cleaned and graded by size and sorted by color in the facility.

Investing in rural women: An investment in a whole community
Rural women farmers in Kano, Nigeria are being trained in technologies to enhance the sorghum value chain, including using sorghum to make bakery products, bio-charcoal, and food safety practices. This helps fulfill the objective of the Nigeria Sorghum Transformation Value Chain project in reducing poverty, improving food security, nutrition and health. The demand for finger millet is increasing in Western Kenya, and women are benefiting from new high-yielding varieties that allow them to increase production. A watershed project in India has helped women farmers conserve water, grow new crops, and transform their thinking about agriculture.
APA2013 Program

Success of Chickpea Production in North Gondar Zone of Ethiopia
Improved chickpea varieties were introduced to farmers in the North Gondar Zone of Ethiopia through efficient seed systems. Productivity increased from 1.4 tons/hectare in 1999 to over 2 tons/hectare currently, above the national average. The complete failure of local varieties due to disease led to even higher adoption of the resistant Habru variety. Over 1200 farmers now grow this variety, and North Gondar contributes significantly to chickpea production in Ethiopia. Ensuring continued supply of quality seed and linking farmers to markets will help sustain interest in chickpea.

Efficient production of high-quality seed for research is an important activity for modern breeding and genebank programs. To bolster this activity, ICRISAT has modernized its seed processing, preparation and grain quality data collection facilities with state-of-the-art machinery and equipment which was inaugurated by Dr Jacqueline Hughes, Director General, ICRISAT, on 18 December. These facilities, set up by the Crop Improvement Operations Team (CIOT) and Genebank, are part of the institute’s efforts to modernize crop breeding and genetic resources conservation. An associated project monitors the impact. This study examines gender dynamics in vegetable farmers' households in Tanzania related to labor, income, and expenses to understand who contributes most labor, income, and covers expenses.

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.
