4. Mission and approach:
1) ICRISAT research for development agenda is achieved
through the CIGAR Research programs on Dryland systems
They are implemented In ways that take the farmers beyond
subsistence farming to produce surplus, that pave the way for
the prosperity in drylands.
2)In last 10 years ICRISAT , research especially in India, China ,
Philippines and Vietnam has tended to emphasis creation and
sustenance rural livelihood in addition to releasing crop varieties
that yield better.
Research Strategy :
The main aim is crop improvement research as the basis is
to improve food availability in drought prone areas of
dryland tropics.

5. The major science based break troughs – attributed to crop
improvement Research at ICRISAT are related two crops :
Pearl millet – HHB67 (Hybrid)–
Assessed to have superior agronomic performance and
improved tolerance to terminal drought.
Pigeon pea – ICPH -8 (hybrid) –
1st ever hybrid of pigeon pea.
