Our cover this month features the designs for the lovely new banners that are now proudly celebrating Streatham’s iconic buildings and events from lamp posts on the High Rd. Aptly, one of them celebrates the beautiful Streatham Hill Theatre. As we go to press, we were
contacted by the Friends of Streatham Hill Theatre to ask us to publicise their petition to Lambeth Council to uphold their decision to protect the 1928 Grade II listed theatre from possible destruction by declaring it an Asset of Community Value. This gives the building protection from immediate development - if it is put up for sale, the Streatham community will be given the opportunity to raise the funds to take it on. Now the owners of the building are appealing to Lambeth Council to reverse their decision. The Friends of Streatham Hill Theatre have until 29 November to convince the council that the theatre is worth saving. Sign the petition at: www.streathamhilltheatre.org

The Fascinating World of Bats: Unveiling the Secrets of the Night
Bats, the mysterious creatures of the night, have long been a source of fascination and fear for humans. With their eerie squeaks and fluttering wings, they have captured our imagination and sparked our curiosity. Yet, beyond the myths and legends, bats are fascinating creatures that play a vital role in our ecosystem.
There are over 1,300 species of bats, ranging from the tiny Kitti's hog-nosed bat to the majestic flying foxes. These winged mammals are found in almost every corner of the globe, from the scorching deserts to the lush rainforests. Their diversity is a testament to their adaptability and resilience.
Bats are insectivores, feeding on a vast array of insects, from mosquitoes to beetles. A single bat can consume up to 1,200 insects in an hour, making them a crucial part of our pest control system. By preying on insects that damage crops, bats save the agricultural industry billions of dollars each year.
But bats are not just useful; they are also fascinating creatures. Their ability to fly in complete darkness, using echolocation to navigate and hunt, is a remarkable feat of evolution. They are also social animals, living in colonies and communicating with each other through a complex system of calls and body language.
Despite their importance, bats face numerous threats, from habitat destruction to climate change. Many species are endangered, and conservation efforts are necessary to protect these magnificent creatures.
In conclusion, bats are more than just creatures of the night; they are a vital part of our ecosystem, playing a crucial role in maintaining the balance of nature. By learning more about these fascinating animals, we can appreciate their importance and work to protect them for generations to come. So, let us embrace the beauty and mystery of bats, and celebrate their unique place in our world.

Welcome to Heart Streatham Issue 14 covering
both July and August. If you thought June had a
lot on, wait till you see July! We’re bringing this
issue out early just to cover all these events, most
of which are offered to the community for free by
volunteers.
It’s the 14th annual Streatham Festival this month,
and we feature almost the entire programme from
the festival in this issue. The battle of the bands
kicks things off on the 25th of June with the
winner playing the Streatham Strut on July 10th.
See what’s been going on around town in our
roundup on page 5 and we’re absolutely full to the
brim with new openings, plus some juicy #rumint
at the Parish Pump on page 9.
We’ve a fascinating look into the history of the
area through the eyes of one of Streatham’s
longest serving businesses. Our property section
looks at movements in the property market in
Streatham, and our local police inspector tells us
about the activities of the Police Cadets on P44.
We’ve lots of What’s on, including activities
throughout July and August and much, much
more inside. We hope you enjoy!

We’ve written about the
questionable use of the planning
system several times. We’ve have
word Lambeth will be relaxing its
planning rules from July, and have already
seen several planning applications for multi-
flat conversions and basement flats flood
in. Streatham Action is posting all planning
applications submitted for any of the four
Streatham wards (since the 1st of May this
year) at www.streathamaction.org.uk/planning.
Just in from Furzedown – Wandsworth Council
prosecuted a prodigious fly-tipper who had
strewn rubbish just off Furzedown Road.
A great result we expect to see copied in
Lambeth ASAP!
Speaking of which, after a huge mea maxima
culpa from the council on the effects of
its policies in increasing fly-tipping in
Streatham this past autumn, we were
pleased to see Lambeth’s promised
response to this on social media
this month. We should expect
action on anti-social contractors,
enforcement on littering,
flytipping, etc but they need our
help. We will post info on our
website on how to report this to
the council for enforcement action.

Not to be outdone, the local Portuguese

Although it rapidly became
expensive with children in tow,
the Streatham Food Festival
was a great excuse to get out
and visit a couple of new places
on the High Road. The offers in
some of the venues have clearly
changed from snacky afterthoughts to
delicious treats crafted just for the festival.
Streatham is becoming a foodie pilgrimage
destination.

After considerable local pressure,
TfL published an underwhelming
plan to improve the Mitcham Lane –

a recent fatality and many recent accidents.
It appears to be a least cost solution and we
think TfL can do much better at this. We will
be supporting others locally to get a proper

We do love to have a pop at the big and
powerful from our soapbox but there are some
fabulous things happening behind the scenes
that we wanted to highlight these and some
people that make things work that need to be
bigged up.
Our local police inspector described our
neighbourhood police and what they do, but
each team in Streatham has their priorities set
by a panel of volunteers that engage with the
community, find out the security needs and
feed this into the police at regular meetings.
See our website for how to get in touch and
involved with your local panel.
We put out calls for volunteers for Streatham
Action, and you’ve responded. Two people
will be making the big boys take notice of
Streatham: Neil Salt, the Transport Action
Group chair, and Russ Lensh the Planning
action Group Chair, and many folk have come
forward to help them out.
This month the Streatham Festival celebrates
its 14th year of putting Streatham on the arts
and culture map. It will be the biggest ever
and adds a comedy trail this year, but for the
first time the Streatham Festival has no public
money from Lambeth Council or the Mayor.
All has been financed by sponsorship from
local businesses and a small grant from the
inStreatham Business Improvement District.
It’s taken a crack team of volunteers who
have given up weeks of their lives to make
all this happen. Dozens of businesses have
donated volunteers, products, venues, cash
and expertise that have been critical for the
festival’s success. Look for their names and
logos inside.
Thanks to the Festival Board for the many
days they have devoted (so far) to making
the Festival happen. Please volunteer to help
during the week if you can - they need helpers!

THE RIVER WANDLE: & LIBERTY OF LONDON
by roger wates
The Wandle flows for just 12 miles
from Carshalton and Waddon
to the Thames at Wandsworth,
dropping an impressive 126 feet,
resulting in a fast flow with the
ability to turn water wheels and
power mills.
Over 900 years ago the Doomsday
Survey recorded 13 watermills used
for grinding corn and wheat and malt
for brewing, and by 1805 the river
was ‘the hardest worked river
for its size in the world’, with 49
mills used for textile spinning,
fabric dying, calico printing,
wool, paper and parchment
manufacture, vegetable oil and
leather production, copper, iron and
gunpowder making, and tobacco and
snuff production.
Quality was high as well, with manufacturers
that were Royal suppliers of paper and
Connelly leather (used in Rolls Royce and
Jaguar cars), Young’s brewery, and three
names that became iconic in interior design
world; William Morris, De Morgan Tiles and
Liberty of
London .
The Liberty
works
produced
block
printed and
silk screen
printed
fabrics
which sold
throughout
the world
and helped
establish
Liberty’s reputation for luxury goods
and innovative design.
Liberty’s head fabric designer
with be giving a talk with E &A
Wates as part of Streatham
Festival (see programme from
p17) from July 9th exploring
this fascinating history, including
2 short films from 1930s & 1970s and
describing the creative process in
launching a new fabric collection;
The Secret Garden, Exhibits from
the archives, fabrics lengths,
furniture and refreshments will
enhance this fascinating and
special evening.

year on 4-11 July. The theme this year is
“Coming of Age”, as Streatham becomes
an even better place to live and enjoy great
restaurants, music and art. Events range
from music and comedy, theatre

out, so book tickets ASAP.
Every night the Festival’s Giggle Week
previews an amazing range of award-winning
comedy acts headed for the Edinburgh Fringe.
Don’t miss the Laughing Pod, upstairs at the
Horse and Groom - £5 a show or £15 for an
evening of 3 hilarious shows. Hideaway hosts
a FREE Giggle Week grand finale on Friday
10th July – Giggle Week is sponsored by
Fitness First, and they’ll be helping
out with flyers for the great
comedy events all over town.
Learn acting, jewellery
making, singing and more
at workshops run by local
businesses throughout the
Festival. Not to be missed

Many events are completely FREE to enjoy, thanks to the hard work of volunteers and support
from the local businesses and our community. The Festival is also helping to raise funds for
Streatham-based homeless charity, Spires, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in September.
Hats off to the wonderful local people, artists, venues, organisations and businesses that have
made the 2015 Festival possible!

It wasn’t many years ago that Streatham was
the fashionable place to be. Parents from areas
such as Dulwich and Clapham entertained their
children here. Now Streatham is back as a top
place to live, drink and eat, with great pubs,
restaurants, lovely independent shops, and
fab live music venues. Parents who remember
Streatham from bygone years are again
encouraging their children to buy their first
homes and raise their families here.
Buying a home in London is stressful at any
budget, as Londoners are continually being
pushed out of Central areas and forced to
move further out, and it's difficult to know
where to stop. My advice is stop in Streatham.
Streatham remains an area where many
young professionals and families can find
affordable homes with true community living,
open spaces and good transport. Few areas
of London boast three stations accessing
key areas of London, and short journey
times have helped put Streatham back on
the map for buyers working in the West
end / City. Proximity to central London has
also encouraged many investors to choose
Streatham over other areas which, in turn, has
led to yields out performing those in Central
London.
I leave you with this; I once asked a friend
what their key motivation was for moving. "A
park!" was yelled back at me. Well my friend, in
Streatham you certainly won't be disappointed!

This month with the lighter nights Lambeth
Police are putting on some special events for
young people. We will be at Park Campus
Secondary school on the 30th June at 7.30pm to
talk about the activities of the Police Cadets and
local opportunities for young people to join in.
This will be followed by an opportunity for all
in attendance to meet Local Police and Police
Community Support Officers.
Lambeth Cadets have had a fantastic year.
They have not only assisted their full time
counterparts with leaflet dropping and other
community activities such as the Streatham
Remembrance Sunday activities and school
fetes, they have taken part in competitions as far
afield as the New Forest.
The Volunteer Police Cadets are a uniformed
voluntary youth organisation, supported by the
Met, and is open to 13 to 18year olds across
London’s diverse communities, irrespective
of background, financial circumstances and
includes those
vulnerable to crime
or social exclusion.
The aim of the
organisation is to
teach life skills,
social responsibility
and build positive
relationships
between young
people and the
police.
If you would like
more information
about Lambeth Cadets please contact me at
