Home Cooks Wanted!
Rehema Figueiredo
Dating might be all about right
or left swiping these days,
but there’s a different kind
of matchmaking happening
in Streatham this autumn.
Hattie Lambrou, founder of the
Home Cooks Project, seeks
eligible cooks to meet their
perfect elderly diner. The Home
Cooks Project connects locals
with their elderly neighbours
through the joy of food, and it
has already produced lasting
relationships.
I met two pairs of Streatham
cooks and diners to find out how
the project has worked for them.
Diner: Noel Warr, 74, used to
work for the Quakers.
Cook: Stuart Derbyshire, 45, a
psychotherapist.
What Noel thinks of his cook
“Stuart usually stays for chat -
he brings the outside world in
and I like his company. We talk
about his adventures and what
I used to get up to, which takes
me out of myself. Occasionally
he brings his children along too
which is fun.”
What Stuart thinks of his diner
“We’re both good at nattering. I
like to think somebody would do
the same thing for me one day.
I usually try to get a token bit
of green into the meals - if I do
sausages and mash there’ll be
a few peas floating in the gravy
somewhere!”
“What I like about Streatham
is the sense of community,
perhaps more so since my kids
have come along. Seeing Noel is
an extension of that really. I like
knowing lots of people nearby. “
Diner: Barbara Brown, 89, a
former civil servant and lyricist -
including 1960s hit Take Me or
Leave Me by the HiFis.
Cook: Lisa Poole, 49, a
behaviour and communication
coach.
How Barbara heard about
Home Cooks
“My doctor gave me a flyer
about Home Cooks. I was
very grateful. I’d lost Joe [my
husband] then and I was on my
own. I’m not a great cook and I
Noel and Stuart
9. heart streatham | 9
wasn’t eating enough.”
What she thinks about Lisa
“She’s a very interesting
personality. I still don’t know
exactly what she does for a
living! But I admire her for doing
it. It’s quite sad when you lose
all your friends as an older
person so I’m very grateful.”
Lisa on meeting Barbara
“It’s a delight; she’s great
company. A very interesting lady.
We have a hoot.”
On being a Home Cook
“I always put an hour aside.
Sometimes it’s just not about
the food it’s about the chat. I
don’t have any family in London
so it’s also about focusing the
energy and effort I would give
my Mum somewhere. I have a
deep respect for elderly people.”
Anyone in SW16 or surrounding
areas can become a cook; you
just need to be able to make
an extra portion of food to take
round to a neighbour. There is
no formal commitment to how
often you visit your diner - it
could be a weekly, fortnightly or
sharing a meal monthly.
The project is always on the
lookout for more local older
people who could benefit from a
meal every now and then. Once
a match is found you’ll be given
safeguarding and basic food
safety information and will need
to undergo a DBS check. Hattie
aims to match cooks with diners
who are no more than a five-
minute walk or drive away.
If you would like to get
involved as a cook, or know
someone who would benefit
from the project, contact
hattie@homecooks.org.uk

a step too Far on streatham high road?
In June, TfL implemented a new red route Traffic
Order on streatham high rd. extending the bus
lane northbound between Becmead avenue
and Drewstead road and reducing parking to a
38-metre stretch for disabled only parking and
loading.
the reduced parking space means greater
pressure on neighbouring roads at a time when
a CPZ is being implemented Controlled Parking
Zone in streatham hill.
the broad new bus lane has reduced general
traffic to a single file. Streatham Action Transport
(sat) opposed this scheme, not only because of
the large number of left turns along that stretch,
but also due to the right turn onto Leigham
avenue opposite Westbury’s. sat predicts
traffic jams during the morning rush-hour from
september as northbound vehicles wait behind
traffic making this right turn. The extended hours
of operation of the bus lane (7am - 7pm monday
to saturday) do not help matters.
sat will be calling on tfL to review its strategy
for the A23 here if predicted logjams develop in
the autumn.
SAT wants traffic to run as smoothly as possible
in both directions through streatham - at a
maximum speed of 20mph. Among other things,
more congestion in peak hours would impact
air quality on the high rd. at a time when the
pressure to attract shoppers is greater than
ever.
Is this a step too far from tfL? Please email

Online estate agents
or high street estate agents
aNThoNY goLd SoLiCiToRS
many of you out there will have seen the adverts
on the television saying how many thousands of
pounds you may or may not save by selling your
house via an online estate agent such as Purple
Bricks or tepilo. however, before you decide which
estate agent to instruct, do you know what they
do and how they can assist in getting the sale to
Completion?
If you have not bought or sold recently then you
may think that the estate agent finds you a buyer
and then sits back waiting for the commission,
some might, but the good estate agents are part
of your team working towards the common goal
of exchange of Contracts and Completion
of your sale. the team working towards
Completion are you, the agent and
your solicitor.
What does the estate agent do?
• Yes, we all know they find your
Buyer, but that is just part of the
process.
• The ability of the Buyer to proceed
is verified – do they have or can they
obtain a mortgage, what deposit do they
have, are they selling and if so is their property
under offer? there is not much point proceeding
with a Buyer who has not yet sold……….
• A Memo of Sale is sent out with details of the
sale & introducing the solicitors to each other.
• The Agent will chase progress of the Buyer’s
mortgage application and pursue the valuation
– without a valuation no mortgage offer will be
issued and no sale will proceed.
• The Agent will chase to ensure that the contract
is issued to your Buyer’s solicitor – make sure
you complete the forms your solicitor requires
and then your solicitor prepares and submits the
papers.
• The Agent will chase your Buyer and their
solicitor to make sure formal instructions are
given and monies on account have been paid so
that the searches can be applied for once the
contract papers are received.
• The Agent will liaise with both sets of solicitors
to ensure searches are received, queries are
raised by the Buyer’s solicitors, these queries
are then answered by both the seller and the
seller’s solicitor so that once all searches have
been received, queries have been resolved and
mortgage offer issued we can look to exchange.
• The Agent is a go between for the Buyer and
seller to resolve issues to do with Completion
Dates, house contents to be left/removed.
• On Completion the Agent is there to hand over
the keys to the Buyer.
all of the above seems straightforward, however,
it is extremely rare for a transaction to proceed
smoothly.
You, the Agent and your Solicitor are a
team. Your solicitor cannot speak
directly to your Buyer, so if there any
delays the agent can chase your
Buyer (to make sure funds are paid
to apply for searches, to obtain
progress reports on the mortgage
offer, that the Buyer signs the
contract and pays the deposit to their
solicitor, to agree Completion Dates),
your solicitor can chase the Buyer’s
solicitor to make sure searches are applied for,
enquiries raised, contract sent to the Buyer to sign,
to exchange contracts and to complete the sale.
In tandem the good agent and solicitor push the
transaction to a satisfactory conclusion; the sale of
your home.
Whilst I agree that the level of the agent’s
Commission is a factor in deciding who to instruct,
now you know what they do and how they can
assist your solicitor in progressing the sale to
exchange and Completion, pick one that will go
the extra mile, pick one that will work with you aND
your solicitor.
If you are thinking of selling then do not be afraid
to sound out your solicitor and find out who we
would recommend, sometimes the relationship
between the agent and the solicitor is the
difference between your Buyer pulling out or the
Buyer moving into your home!

obtain an estimate please contact a member

the streatham tragedy
maRK BeRY
a streatham family, the Coates, were all found
dead at the Knowle, a large property in Leigham
Court Rd. in 1921 in a case that received
extensive national press coverage.
"the Knowle" was a four-storey double fronted
house standing in its own grounds, sometimes
referred to as the "mystery house" locally.
The family consisted of Ernest Coates (46), Marie
Coates (62), Daisey Townesend (28) daughter
of ernest from a previous marriage and henry
marron (36) son of mrs Coates. Daisy was an
actress with the stage name of marie Lawrence,
and mrs Coates had been Nurse to King alfonso
of spain and was in receipt of a pension from the
him.
ernest Coates posted three explanatory letters on
the sunday before the tragedy. One to his brother
albert, who also lived in Leigham Court road,
another to the residents in the upper part of the
house, and one to the Coroner.
A bottle of champagne, 4 glasses, a coffee pot,
and 4 cups were all examined by the Home
Office. The maid, who had been given leave at
short notice, confirmed that the family never
drank alcohol and the bottle of champagne had
been purchased the saturday before the tragedy.
It was known that ernest, an electrical engineer,
was under financial pressure. He had suffered
a loss of business and incurred medical fees of
£700- quite a sum in those days -for treatment
for his daughter’s illness. he was also involved in
a legal case and had tried to rent out three rooms
in the house.
the cause of the family’s deaths was concluded
to be murder by mr. Coates (and suicide on his
part) using cyanide or potassium administered in

Streatham’s mini festival,
Kite Day, returns to our
beautiful Common on
Sunday 2 September
from 11:00 to 17:00. The
free event is packed
Streatham Common Kite Day 2018
full of spectacular kite
flying displays and is an
opportunity for everyone
to go fly a kite.
For this, the 20th event,
there is another brilliant
line-up of kites this year
to dazzle and amaze
with acrobatic displays
or astound with huge
static kites.

The kites
Lex and
Irma are
the Flying
Fish – they
fly their kites as a pair
to music. Their name
comes from their first
pair of team kites,
which were a fish and a
shark called Neptune and
Jaws. The Flying Fish started
out on their local common
in Southampton and in
July they were crowned
UK National Champions,
in dual-line pairs, after four
years finishing as the runners-
up.
We expect to be hypnotised
again by the father and son
kite flyers Team SPECTRUM,
who have flown together
for over 20 years. We look
forward to seeing Bryan,
from the pair, fly three kites
simultaneously again – and it
turns out he does not have a
third hand!
Twisted Bridle are Pea and
Lisa – a newly formed kite
flying pair who are being
mentored by the Flying
Fish. We look forward to
welcoming for the first time
to Kite Day. Perhaps some of
this year’s amateur flyers will
be back next year to be part
of the official displays…
Members of the Kent Kite
Flyers, which has been
going since the early 1990s,
will be attending the festival.
One of the club’s main aims
is to spread the word about
kite flying and encourage
people to get involved so
come along and have
a chat with them if you
need advice or have any
questions.
The most established club
attending Kite Day is the
Brighton Kite Flyers – they
have been around since
the 1970s and have an
international membership.
You might remember
the Brighton club for their
impressively massive kites
representing all kinds
of wildlife and unusual
characters.
Keith aka NASAman will
join us again to attempt to
use the power of the wind
to lift him up into the sky
but not quite into space.
His incredible kites can
genuinely lift him into the
air, so he often must be
tethered down, just in case.
A sight not to be missed!
We are pleased to also
welcome back the Grumpy
Old Gits and their big kites.
They are a small, very select
club, group or gang of “Old
Gits” who make kites, fly
kites and muck about. Look
out for them as they aim to
impress.
But Kite Day is not just for
the experts – the organisers
encourage people to bring
their own kites to fly. If you
don’t own a kite, why not
make one or buy one on the
day?
The stalls
Not all the stalls are kite
related – there are many
community stalls and food
and drink for everyone.
The Inkspot Brewery
– Streatham’s own beer
makers. Wash down your
hog roast, burger or jerk
chicken with a locally
brewed pint. Keeping up with
the local theme, Fish Tale
21. bring an array of seafood
delicacies. Streatham’s
organic bakery – Elephant
Bakehouse – are on site if
you want to grab one of their
tasty sourdough loaves.
From sweet treats to savoury
delights, meaty to vegetarian
and vegan, almost all tastes
are catered for at Kite Day.
Streatham is a real
community, and nothing
says that more than the
range of local groups and
charities with stalls at Kite
Day, who help to make it
such a special event.
The Friends of Streatham
Common, who run Kite
Day, Streatham Common
Co-operative, London
Wildlife Trust and
Streatham Common
Community Garden
are here to tell you about
how they work together to
look after and protect the
Common and the Rookery.
They are keen to let you
know what you can do to
help and how you can get
involved in volunteering – so
stop by their stalls to find out
more.
Other local community stalls
this year are the Streatham
Society for a local history
fix, Streatham Theatre
Company, Streatham
and Streatham Common
WIs, Streatham Action,
Streatham Festival,
Streatham Choral
Society, Immanuel and
St Andrew’s Fair Trade,
Furzedown United
(Youth) FC (football training
on the Common) and firm
favourites Pets As Therapy
(yes, the dogs are back!).
On the charity side, we are
delighted that, after their
absence from last year’s
event, the RPSB are back
with their popular stall and
that the London Bee
Keepers Association has
a stall for the first time this
year – with a demonstration
hive.
Other charities looking for
your support again this
year include the Spires
project for the homeless in
South London, the inspiring
Streatham Youth and
Community Trust and
the Inland Waterways
Association. In addition,
Cancer Research UK will
have a stall for the first time
and will be signing people
up for their upcoming
fundraising events.
Beyond the kites
Kite Day is a wonderful family
event. In between marvelling
at the displays or kite flying,
children can go on the
bouncy castle or get their
faces painted.
Dance on the Common to
live music from local band
Rapture Riders, who will
play between the displays.
And if dancing is not for
you, explore the community
stalls to get a taste of the
incredible groups and
societies which help make
Streatham so special.
Mike Robinson, Chair of
the Friends of Streatham
Common, which organises
Kite Day is excited about the
2018 event.
“Streatham Kite Day is back,
and we think it’s going to
be our best event yet –
we’ve got incredible kite
displays, more food stalls
and a bigger bar and kite
shop. We’ve been drawing
crowds to gaze in wonder
at incredible feats of air
acrobatics for nearly 20
years. And don’t forget that
you can bring or buy a kite
and fly one for yourself!
There’s always a great
atmosphere at Streatham
Kite Day – we’ll have live
music, people can explore
the many stalls with family
and friends and there’s
plenty of local food and
drink to sample. And don’t
forget, entry is free. Any
profits will help make the
Common and its gardens
even more beautiful so
there’s even more reason to
attend.”

History of Kite Day
Streatham Kite Day
originally started as a festival
celebrating all things to do
with the wind back in 1998.
The first Wind Day saw not
only kites but a wind harp
that travelled all the way
from Bristol. Wind Day was
organised by the Friends of
Streatham Common shortly
after the group was formed.
A day celebrating the wind
was the perfect event
for the nascent voluntary
organisation as the Common
lies in the path of winds
blowing in from the West and
was once home to a working
wind mill.
After that successful first
Wind Day, kites became the
focus and Streatham Kite
Day has become a regular
event on the Common each
year attracting thousands of
people.

st Leonard’s Church has been
awarded £220,100 from the
heritage Lottery Fund (hLF)
to repair the roof, make the
building watertight, and to
make it more accessible by
installing ramps and new
toilets and updating the
catering facilities. this means
that the church can offer
parishioners and the wider
community a space that meets
modern expectations.
Canon anna Norman-
Walker, rector at st Leonard’s
said: “this grant means
we can be confident of the
church’s sustainability; not just
the fabric of the building, but
of the service and continued
relevancy that the church
provides to society.”
st. Leonard's is a member
of the Church of england
and stands on a site where
Christians have worshipped
for over 1,000 years. Parts
of the building date from the
14th century (the tower), and
from the Georgian era (nave
and chancel). the ancient
church yard contains several
Grade II listed monuments.
Both samuel Johnson and
Jane austen are known to have
worshipped here.
Change to st Leonard's Church
is a constant and enduring
element of the streatham
landscape. It makes a great
contribution to the spiritual
and social well-being of the
community. It hosts many
community and special
interest groups such as
streatham Choral society,
surrey association of Church
Bell ringers etc. as well as
formal civic events. the church
is also used by individuals

the Open Day season
JaNe WRoe WRighT
It’s the Open Day season. after all your research
and all the advice, you have the chance to see
schools for yourself, meet staff and some of the
pupils, and soak up the atmosphere of a school
with your child. ask questions. What do pupils
like best and least about their school? What
do teachers think the school does well, and
where could it be better? Do staff and pupils
and show genuine pride in the school and relish
showing it off to you? are teachers passionate
and inspiring about for their subjects? What
resources are in place for matters of pastoral
care and special needs?
It’s a good sign to see pupils’ work on display,
and to hear positive things about a school’s
involvement in its local community. Check out
sports facilities, music and performance space,
science labs, and the library. ask about the
range of subject on offer and extra-curricular
activities too – what opportunities are there for
your child to take? the school is putting its best
face forward at an Open Day, so ask the right
questions to try and find out what normal school
life is like.
As a mum of four, I've been to over 80 Open
Days from nursery to university over the years.

communicate with their visitors, and care
about making their Open Days key elements
in choosing a school. I’ll never forget the wise
words of the headmaster of King’s College
school, Wimbledon at
their Open Day: “there
is no such thing as the
best school, only the
best school for your
child.”
