A bit about us...
Lee Alley went to a local police briefing on
Safer Neighbourhoods in 2005 expecting to
heckle and accidentally found
himself impressed by what
he heard. Weeks later he
even more accidentally
found himself elected chair
of the St Leonards safer
neighbourhoods panel where
he sensibly set up term limits for
chairs. Ironically he now chairs Streatham Action,
the Streatham Area Forum.
Jane Wroe Wright has worked on five continents
in the world of media, for national,
international and local press,
TV and magazine brands.
She’s lived in the area for
30 years, the past eight of
which have been in Streatham.
She has four children, sings
with the Streatham Choral Society
and volunteers with Streatham Festival 2015 and
Streatham Action.

It’s been a gorgeously bright
Springtime since our last issue came
out and we look forward to a great
summer. There is much about to happen
just this month but first a few things
we’ve seen over the past few weeks...
Several local boys and girls ran the last
3 miles of the London Marathon as part of
the young peoples’ Mini-marathon. All
finished in good time but importantly
all but one of the U13s beat Romeo
Beckham to the finish. Well done! Most
are members of our local athletics club
Herne Hill Harriers who then hauled in
more gold at the Herne Hill Open then
later at the Surrey Championshipsin May.
We’ve seen another precious metal haul from our
local ice dance couples too, as Natalie Nicoll and
Theodore Alexander took golds at Murrayfield,
then took 1st and 2nd places at Streatham in the
Solo and Couples Competition 2015. Well done
them!
In a bit of vicarious celebration, we’re pleased
that Streatham boy-done-good Roger Knight was
named President of the Marylebone Cricket Club
(Lords) and will take office from 1 October. We
think a blue plaque is due on a local house after 1
October as well.
We were at the South London Islamic Centre for
the pre-application consultation on re-building the
old fire engine station into a four-story mosque
able to cater for 1,000 worshippers at a time.
Watch for upcoming news of further consultation
on this. Woodmansterne Primary School has
submitted an application for planning consent to
expand its primary school and build a secondary
school on the site. If the plans gain consent the
new secondary will be the first built in Streatham
in decades and address a woeful lack of
secondary places.
Along the theme of planning, Streatham
Action has responded to residents’ reaction to
extraordinary planning decisions by Lambeth
and have created a Planning Action Group. It
posts every planning application to the Streatham
Action website so look to www.streathamaction.
org.uk for more info and resources.
Finally we want to say a word of praise for
Frances of Hideaway. We have not only enjoyed
blues, soul and some superb swing shows this
month, but she has graciously lent the club
to hosting the Friends of Streatham Common
comedy night and the Streatham Festival
fundraiser auction as well. If you missed
the Friends comedy night you really
missed an amazing show. It was worth it
for Bob Mills’ MC’ing but the lineup was
first class as well. We had a great time
with an generous bunch at the Streatham
Festival fundraiser too, where donated
goods and services were auctioned off to
raise money for the festival. This year’s take
almost doubled last year’s and many put
their hands up to have an estate agent’s
board at their house to raise further
funds too. Huge thanks to Hideaway for
being big supporters of local culture
and initiatives!

LEE TAKES A TRIP
One big reason we launched Heart Streatham
last year was to support the shops and business
in Streatham, to showcase great businesses
on our doorstep and to encourage residents to
visit local shops, sites and open spaces. This
became impossible for me last month when I
twisted my ankle badly tripping on a broken
paving slab whilst walking to the shops. This
got me noticing broken and uneven
hazardous pavements all over the place!
You might say “Well, that’s the
council’s responsibility and they’re
slow about things,” but here’s how it
really works.
There is a Lambeth Baseline Services
Agreement in force between the council
and the inStreatham Business Improvement
District (BID), where, once a pavement or tarmac
fault is reported, the repair process must begin
within 5 days on priority roads (eg. the High
Road) and everywhere else within 28 days. This
is to ensure Lambeth and TfL make repairs that
make it safe and pleasant to shop in Streatham.
I know this because I signed it on behalf of the
BID when I was the chair. It clearly sets out what
the council is responsible to do once the BID is
in place in an area.
A couple of weeks ago I took my little helper
with me and we found 94 Baseline Agreement
breaches in just 100m between Sports Direct
and the railway bridge.
As residents we can’t approach the BID
directly; they represent the businesses,
but what we can do is tell businesses
the pavements outside their premises
are out of order and that the levy
(between £500 and £70,000) they
pay every year can get things done for
them quickly, and ask them to report the
problem via the BID because of the Baseline
Agreement.
A big point to the inStreatham BID is to increase
footfall on the High Road and part of that should
be getting Lambeth and TfL to keep customers
safe walking to and from local shops. Let’s start
working together to make Streatham a nicer and
safer place.

Streatham Art Trail (Art23)

The Streatham Food Festival is back on 3rd-7th
June with a huge range food to try and buy
from local eateries of all shapes and sizes.
One of the highlights of the festival is the Food
Trail, running from the 4th - 6th June where
restaurants offer a tasting menu for under £5.
Last year’s winners Mediterranean deli Fish
Tale are back hoping to regain their crown after
winning in 2014 but With 31 local restaurants
taking part including newcomers like Hood and
Café Barcelona there will be stiff competition.
The Food Trail map is enclosed in the festival
programme giving details of what’s on offer.
Last year Time Out described the trail as ‘An
indecisive eater’s dream’ with punters being
able to hop from place to place trying out the
huge range of cuisines on offer. Many of our
favourite places are involved including Bravi
Ragazzi, The Manor Arms, ilili and The Railway
but if Streatham Gourmet had to pick three not
to be missed this year, they would be;
Rice Republic a trio of Chinese mini-dishes
at very reasonable prices; Salt & Chilli Squid -
£3.50, Beef in Black Bean Sauce - £3.80, Salt &
Chilli Baked Tofu - £3.50.
Hideaway Jazz Café’s light, fresh and spicy
menu with the added bonus of a
veggie option. Cashew nut, carrot and
coriander falafel wrap (v) (£5) Moroccan spiced
lamb burger with feta cheese & harissa (£5) and
Thai spiced fish cake with pak choi & sweet
chilli sauce (£5)
The Earl Ferrer’s have gone all out with an
eclectic selection. Salmon tartare with gin fizz,
granita and tempura fried oyster (£5) Veal and
pancetta meatballs in rich tomato sauce and
soft polenta (£5) and Strawberry cappuccino
(£5) a perfect mini-meal packed with unusual
combinations.
There is enough variety in the Food Trail to
excite even the most seasoned of foodies.

your favourites!

The usual format of a WI meal out is that we
sign up, I book, people drop out, more join
the list and generally fewer than expected
turn up. This is why when I arrived at
Addomme, Streatham Hill for our monthly WI
meal out, I was shocked that not only did I
not have a seat, but also more people were
there than had signed up. I was quickly given
a seat and it didn’t take long for me to realise
why so many had come out for this venue. Its
reputation had spread from the moment we
chose this for the next night out. We took up
quite a bit of this little restaurant both in body
and sound, but the other customers did not
seem to mind, and neither did the staff. They
were a delight, answering questions about
themselves and the history of this charming
family all the while serving up the most
delicious pizzas and other Italian favourites.
The wine flowed well, the atmosphere was
friendly and welcoming, and the food went
down a treat. Adomme changes its menus
weekly, according to what looks good in
the market. I am in no doubt that next time
we book this restaurant it will be even more
popular. Once again, a real treat to find such
a great restaurant and pizzeria right here
in Streatham.

Project
Open spaces in London are under increasing
threat from developers and from ever-
increasing commercial use. We’re building
more houses in London, but we hardly
ever build new open spaces and there is
less affordable community space available
each year. The Woodfield Recreation
Ground, however, is a rare open space with
the potential to provide a village hall as a
community hub.
Woodfield is a field with a derelict cricket
pavilion surrounded by trees between
Abbotswood Road and Triangle field (part of
Tooting Bec Common) For many years until
2010 the site was occupied by the Waldorf
School, but has been empty since.
Recently a group of local residents set up a
charity called The Woodfield Project to work
with Wandsworth Council to bring the field
back into public use, and to refurbish the
cricket pavilion. How the pavilion and field
will be used is up to the public, but early
suggestions include providing facilities for
 recreation and leisure for the local
community
 education and training, including links
with local schools such as a Forest Schools
programme & horticulture organisations
 social inclusion - a “growing space” to aid
rehabilitation & recovery
 partner other groups and bodies providing
opportunities for training for local people
through outdoor experiences to increase
employment prospects
The Woodfield Project is part of Wandsworth
Council’s Tooting Common Heritage Project
which will bid for Heritage Lottery Fund
grants. The charity will also need to raise
funds from sponsorship and members and
users as part of the project bid, and to build
a viable future for the site. We hope to be up
and running by early 2017, but there will be
plenty going on before then!
The first big event will be the Woodfield
Fair on Saturday 4th July from 2pm to 5pm,
part of the Streatham Festival. This will be
an annual event and will see live music,
food and craft stalls, refreshments, bouncy
castle, games and face painting among the
attractions.

TennisinStreatham

As SW19 gears up for another thrill-filled
fortnight of scintillating sport, here in SW16
players are also dusting off their whites,
practising their serves and preparing to do battle
for some of the most hard-fought trophies in the
tennis world.
For this is the season when competitive
members of Streatham’s long established
clubs compete for coveted championships.
At Wigmore Lawn Tennis Club (www.
wigmoretennis.com) in Becmead Avenue,
for example, American tennis scholar and
Streatham-raised Christian Kerrigan, 20, is
back from Georgia to take on top coach Jimmy
Callus, club champion Cameron Downey and
rising star Luke Hymas, 14. Luke is one of
a handful of strong juniors at Wigmore who
are competing successfully in Surrey’s LTA
competitions.
At Telford Park (www.telfordparktennisclub.
co.uk), a club nestling in an oasis of green, the
2 week club tournament is the highlight of the
year with BBQs and parties throughout. 5 times
winner and Coach Aaron Dempster is hoping to
regain his title from current champ Andy Fitt.
Given its urban setting, Streatham has a
surprising wealth of tennis clubs. Norbury Park
to the South has 4 floodlit hard courts and is
launching an initiative to encourage women back
onto the tennis court. Tennis Tuesday (7pm-8pm
every week) is backed by the LTA and is open to
non-members. On the borders of Clapham lies
Grafton Club where the hotly challenged Grafton
Cup is on June 27th this year while the finals are
not until the weekend of August 8th/9th. Tucked
away down a private alley is another tennis
gem, Woodfield Grove Lawn Tennis Club, with a
reputation for being one of the friendliest clubs
in London with its 4 floodlit courts it boasts
a strong coaching team led by Karen Govan.
Finals day is in June 20th.
But you don’t have to be a member of a private
club to play in Streatham. Hillside Gardens
(hillsidegardenspark.co.uk) is building a
reputation for fun tournaments and coaching for
adults and children. Check out their Facebook
page for details. And there is a magical court
tucked away in a verdant corner of Streatham
Common where you can dream you are Andy
Murray or Serena Williams.

OF WOODFIELD RECREATION GROUND
Woodfield Recreation ground is to the east
of Tooting Bec Common within Lambeth,
but is owned by Wandsworth; it
has always been in the parish of
Streatham. In medieval times,
the area was farmed, and from
1729 became Tile Kiln and Mount
Ephraim farm centered on the
present Woodfield Avenue. By 1801
a John Kymer converted the farm
into a grand country house known as
Woodfield House
From 1834-1852 Robert Garrard of the Royal
Jewellers occupied the house, then between
1854 and 1875 the Soanes family lived
there until in 1876 Charles Mortimer a city
businessman and his family moved in. The
house was rebuilt in 1878 and the land was then
owned and developed by the Drew family. After
the Mortimers moved out, the house became a
nursing home before it was demolished in 1935.
Abbotswood Road was laid down in 1927, and
in 1936 Battersea Grammar School moved into
the site which Streatham and Clapham High
School occupied the building in 1994.
The remaining land was sold in 1927
to the London County Council as
land for playing fields. Woodfield
Recreation Ground opened in
June 1932 for the benefit of young
people and school children, and
the sports pavilion opened in 1933.
Responsibility for the site passed first
to the Greater London Council in 1965
and then the London Borough of Wandsworth
in 1976, although it lay within Lambeth, which
now has planning control for the site.
A portion of the recreation ground was leased
in 1986 to the Waldorf School, which vacated
Woodfields in September 2010. Only the brick
pavilion remains on the site, which has remained
vacant.

Safetyforchildren
For two years now, Tahir Alvi, founder of
Sigmatak Limited, a London based Information
Security Consultancy has organised and run
a film making competition for children aged
11-16 promoting internet safety. He said
“This competition helps to raise internet safety
awareness amongst children and creates a
platform for youngsters to express creative
talent and build self confidence in the process”.
As children use the internet more and more they
risk becoming targets of predators. Tahir wants
to empower children through innovative internet
safety education activities from an early age so
that internet safety becomes instinctive.
The competition has run for two years now.
Charlotte Thomas, aged 15, of Rhymney
Comprehensive School in Wales won the
Sigmatak Film Competition 2014. Charlotte’s film
“The Letterbox” was one of the seven shortlisted
films from 80 entries received from across the
UK. The films were judged by a panel consisting
of 20 Senior Information Security Professionals
from leading global organisations. One of the
judges on the panel, Keith Martin, Director of the
Information Security Group at Royal Holloway
University, said: “Charlotte’s film is of a high
enough class to be used for adults as well as
children. I thought the film was superb and hit
the nub of the issue - our inability to treat cyber
security the way we do physical security.”

Sigmatak will be launching the film competition
again in 2016 and is keen to hear from
companies that would be interested in
sponsoring this great initiative. Past sponsors
have included McAfee, Royal Holloway
University, Edara Consulting, Ascertia,
SigningHub and Leaderman Consulting. It’s a
fantastic opportunity for firms and parents to
play a leading role in addressing the dangers
that young people face online and helping them
to stay safe. More important than a prize; some
key benefits for the children include increased
confidence and developing leadership,
communication and collaborative working skills
that will be beneficial for the children’s future
careers.

Head to the Streatham Common Kite Day for
a FREE mini festival packed full of kite flying
and spectacular displays on Sunday 21 June
between 11am and 5pm organised by the
Friends of Streatham Common.
Family fun
With displays from a variety of enthusiasts as
well as stalls selling kites and all things kite
related, the 2015 Kite Day promises plenty of
fun for all ages. The annual event is now in its
17th year, and sees kite enthusiasts from all
over the country converge on Streatham for a
day of competitions and demonstrations.
Festival highlights
Highlights of this year’s Streatham Common
Kite Day include the UK National Champions
Team Flame, and Team Spectrum with their
sensational kite displays to music, and an
appearance from Smorg the Dragon! You
can see large scale display kites flown
by members of the Brighton Kite Fliers
club, as well as synchronized kite flying
choreographed to music, courtesy of Team
Spectrum. There’s also the White Horse Kite
Flyers and Kent Kite Flyers kite displays
to look forward to, and enthusiasts can
visit a stall for kites and state of the art kite
equipment.

You don’t need to go high-tech in order to
get your kite into the air, though - plenty of
visitors to the Streatham Common Kite Day
will be proudly flying basic sled kites knocked
together with a bin-bag, a couple of sticks,
some sticky tape and a bit of string. The
festival organisers are encouraging everyone
to bring along their own DIY kites for a day
out on the common, and there’ll be kite
flying tuition available to help you master the
basics.
Food and more
A number of food and drink stalls will be
setting up shop for the day during the kite
festival, so you can quench your thirst at
the bar and then fill up on everything from
a hog roast and jerk chicken to hot dogs,
crepes and ice cream. There’s also a bouncy
castle and face painting for kids, as well an
array of stalls from many local community
organisations.

Last year the day long festival saw thousands
of people take part in all the events on
Streatham Common, and this year similar
numbers are expected to turn out to watch all
the solo routines, trick flyers and races. Keep

Owner Kelly McElmont moved to London at
16 and started with an apprenticeship with
Cobella, and went on to work in famous
salons all over London. Her talent led to
London Fashion Week and professional

tennis stars.
Kelly started Shout Hair in a tiny space in
Streatham Hill with only two chairs and four
team members, and moved to a bigger salon
near Streatham Station last autumn. “We
predicted we’d be busier, as the location is

Garage Nation will host its first ever outdoor music festival in Streatham
Common on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th July. We caught up with the team
behind the scenes to find out how the planning is going and to find out more
about what we can expect from The Garage Nation Outdoor Festival.
Where did The Garage Nation Outdoor Festival come from?
TThe Garage Nation brand is one of the UK's leading dance music events and has
been circling some of the best venues in the UK and abroad for 18 Years. For a
long time it has been our goal to take the next step and launch our very own
outdoor festival.
What is One Dance Festival?
OOne Dance Festival will take place on the Sunday as part of The Garage Nation
Outdoor Festival Weekender. The main stage is hosted by Garage Nation but
there will also be a variety of other music playing in other arenas. This includes
music that has been part of the musical roots of UK Garage, such as Drum &
Bass, Jungle and Old Skool along with music that UK Garage has gone on to
influence, such as the new House & Bass Music sounds of today.

How is the planning going for the event?
WWe employed a specialist outdoor event agency to manage the event as there
are a lot of elements to consider. The team has worked incredibly hard and we are
very happy with how the planning is going. An enormous amount of effort has
gone into the finer details to ensure that attendees have a great time, local
businesses benefit positively and that the nearby residents have as little
disruption as possible. We have a few Streatham residents involved in the
planning which has been great as it means we have some people who have a
real passionreal passion to make this a successful event for the area.
What steps have been taken to try and minimise disruption for residents?
There have been many meetings and discussions with key parties such as
Councillors, Residents Groups and Local Authorities. We have taken on board the
feedback and concerns and tried our best to satisfy as many of these points as
possible. With the nature of these types of events we won’t deny that there will be
some loud music, but we have independant Sound Management teams on site,
early finish times and a dedicated phone number for people to call should they
experience any disruption. These precautions won’t stop the sound, but by
workingworking with the Local Authority, our Sound Management consultants as well as
local resident’s groups we aim to minimise disruption as best we can.
Any final thoughts?
We are incredibly excited about bringing this festival to life and hope everyone
attending or living in the surrounding area can see the positives that events like
this can provide. Streatham has an enormous amount on offer and is becoming
increasingly popular as a destination. Tickets for Saturday have almost sold out,
but Sunday tickets are still available if you would like to attend. A letter will be
distributed in June to surrounding addresses giving further details and a
dedicated phone number in case you need to contact us, as well as some key
poipoints and info about the event weekend.

This month saw the beginning of a new
collaboration with the inStreatham Business
Improvement District (BID) , the Local Authority
and Streatham Safer Neighbourhood Teams. The
Streatham BID is funded by local businesses on
Streatham High Road who have come together
to help improve the area making it a great place
to live, work and visit.
From the 11th of May two of your Local
Neighbourhood officers will be working
on a permanent basis on behalf of the
local businesses. The officers will have
responsibilities to deal with crime, disorder and
anti-social behaviour on the High Road when
on duty. Carrying local business crime reduction
radios, they will have direct contact with all
businesses that also hold radios. They will deal
directly with the Business Crime Reduction
Team that works across other areas of Lambeth.
This will allow the sharing of information in
relation to criminals working across Streatham
High Road and other parts of Lambeth and if
there is enough evidence they will be banned,
not only from the shop where they caused a
problem, but all other venues that are part of
the BCRP scheme. This has been found to be
an effective way in cutting down anti-social
behaviour across the Borough.

says ‘having listened to feedback from local
businesses, we agree that the most effective
way to reduce crime in our town centre is for
there to be more police on the street. Through
our safety budget, the BID will be supporting
an increased police presence on the high road
and having met the officers who will be working
in our area we are confident that they will be an
effective tool in making Streatham a safer place
this summer’

On Tuesday 19th May at the Novotel,
Lambeth Road the Southwark and Lambeth
Archaeological Society celebrated its 50 years
in promoting and saving the heritage of the
two boroughs of Southwark and Lambeth.
The Society was honoured at the anniversary
dinner by the presence of Councillor Donatus
Anyanwu, the mayor of Lambeth and
Councillor Dora Dixon-Fyle, MBE, the
mayor of Southwark as the invited
guests.
Founded in 1965 as a rescue group
the Society has contributed many
discoveries to the rich history of
the two boroughs as explained by
the principal speaker, the eminent
archaeologist, Harvey Sheldon who
also received an award for his work on the
rose theatre trust.
The principle discoveries are:
• The Black Princes Palace at Kennington
• The first delftware pottery kilns excavated
in Europe
• The remains of a priory which are beneath the
present Southwark Cathedral
• A Roman Road leading to the first bridge in
London
On the previous Saturday the 16th May, in
Southwark Cathedral, the Society was honoured
by being awarded a Life Time Achievement
Award by The London Borough of
Southwark. When founded the work
of discovering the past was carried
out principally by an amateur
volunteer workforce. The society
campaigned to create the system
and legislation we have now of a
truly professional nature.
Today the Society has also become an
important forum for talks on local history
