You have not only made
everyone in Uttoxeter and
surrounding areas so proud, you are a beacon of hope for
youngsters in Great Britain and you are now a National
Treasure...
We all watched Adam’s thrilling Gold Medal swim and his
emotional, tearjerking talk to a BBC Sports reporter after the
race. He spoke so passionately about his family, his town, and
of course his country. I was so proud of him and I couldn’t
stop tears from running down my cheeks...
Then to win a Silver Medal in the Team GB relay team was
the icing on the cake for the 21 year old Uttoxeter man who
has made so many friends around the world with his
unbelieveable swimming talent and his overall demeanour.
He has a marvellous personality which mum and dad
Mark and Caroline - plus Nan Mavis Williams - should be so
proud of.
The former Painsley College student has a glittering
swimming career ahead of him and I know I can vouch for
all our community by wishing him all the very best in
attempting to achieve his aspirations in the future.
We salute you Adam and all at The Voice and the
communities of Uttoxeter, Cheadle, Ashbourne and
surrounding villages thank you for making the Rio 2016

he Bramshall Art Group Annual Exhibition was held
in Bramshall Parish Hall where visitors could see and
enjoy the usual high standard display of work achieved
by the Group over the past 12 months. In addition, there was
also the opportunity to enjoy refreshments with delicious
home-made cakes and even light lunches were served to many
visitors.
The Exhibition attracted a larger number of visitors this
year, which was, at least in part, due the Exhibition coinciding
with the Bramshall Open Gardens event. Many of the visitors
left written comments as to how they had enjoyed the
exhibition and many also left their contact details so that they
could be informed about future Exhibitions.
The Group now have a page on Facebook where photos
of the 2016 Exhibition are being regularly posted, together
with information on other Exhibitions held by Bramshall Art

This year the Exhibition included over 150 paintings,
which is more than usual and a good number were sold
making it a very successful Exhibition. Part of the proceeds
will be donated to a local charity. The Group would like to

6th Form raises over
£3300 for charity

ast year the Thomas
Alleyne’s High School 6th
Form adopted the Douglas
Macmillan Hospice as their
forever charity in memory of
Helen Reaney - MFL teacher and
Deputy of 6th Form at the
school. The Hospice is located in
Blurton, Stoke-on-Trent and they
offer comprehensive care for
adults with progressive,
advanced disease and a limited
life illness so that they may
achieve the best quality of life.
The Hospice receives only 25%
of its funding from the NHS the
rest is raised through fundraising and donations.
Each 6th Form form group was given the challenge of raising a minimum
of £60.00 over the academic year for the charity.
The new 6th Form Charity Ambassadors for 2016-2017 are Josh Stretton
and Emily Macpherson - they are both keen to exceed what was achieved
this year.
“We are extremely proud to announce that our wonderful 6th Form
students have raised an amazing £3307.77 for the Hospice”, commented

ordon Wright is remarkably cheerful for a
man with a life-threatening illness. He was
diagnosed with prostate cancer nine years
ago and is grateful for every day he’s alive.
Now Gordon, from Cheadle, is showing his
gratitude with a donation to the hospital where he
was treated, and a charitable donation which will
ensure that dozens of men have a chance of life-
saving early treatment.
He is giving £1,000 to buy equipment for the
University Hospital of North Midlands and
another £1,000 to Uttoxeter Lions Club, who offer
free prostate cancer blood tests to local men.
Gordon, a retired miner, is 74, and after regular
implants of drugs for nearly a decade and
radiotherapy treatment more recently, he said:
“You’ve got to try and give a little bit of something
back. They’ve told me what my treatment costs
and its thousands of pounds over the years, so this
is not a lot really.”
Uttoxeter Lions spokesman and Voice
columnist Gary Hudson said the donation will
make a huge difference to their annual event at
Uttoxeter Racecourse, which offers free blood tests
to local men: “Gordon is being too modest about
his donation. It’s a fantastic amount which will pay
for more than 60 tests, and that means he will
certainly have saved the lives of men who would
otherwise have died.”
Gordon has also had surgery for bowel cancer,
which was diagnosed during his prostate
treatment. He enthuses about the cheery welcome
he receives from the nursing staff.“They’re always
smiling. I can’t praise them enough. A lot of people
turn up at the hospital with long faces, as if the
mortgage is due, but what’s the point of that? We
are all in the same boat, and you’ve got to make
the most of it.”
He has a clear message for anyone who receives
a positive result to a blood
test for prostate cancer: “If
they’ve caught it, you’re just
a normal bloke still. You
don’t even know you’ve got
it. It’s not as if you wake up
in pain. You carry on and
take the treatment.”
The former Hem Heath
miner was diagnosed after he
mentioned to his GP that he
was visiting the toilet several
times a night. The
seriousness of his condition
was explained by a nurse,
who he says, made it easier
to take because of her
friendly manner.
That nurse, Karen
Moore, was recently featured
in the Voice. She’s the clinical
nurse specialist in urology
cancer at the University
Hospitals of North Midlands in Stoke-on-Trent,
but it was as a saxophone player in a musical trio
that she was pictured. Gordon saw the photo and
was even more impressed. He took advice from her
before deciding how to make his contribution.
He said: “She’s a good woman. They all are, but
Karen is always smiling, I wanted to donate to her
charity.”
His wife Margaret shows her appreciation of
the medical staff by contributing to the hospital
shop. An enthusiastic knitter, she has just delivered
the latest batch of 15 blankets, trimmed with lace.
They will be sold to raise money for equipment.
The couple, of The Green, Cheadle, share a
positive outlook. Margaret said: “It’s been a
struggle but we’re getting there. Two lots of cancer
and we’ve had good days and bad days, but life
goes on, and we make the most of it.”
They have two sons and three grandchildren,
are keen gardeners and rock ‘n’ roll fans. A recent
trip to Nashville, New Orleans and Memphis,
included visits to the legendary Sun studios and
Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley. They have
booked a return trip.
Gordon continues to plan ahead: “I’ve had nine
years and I’ll settle for another nine. That’ll do me,
but when he says: ‘Come in number five,’ that’s it.
But don’t give up.”
He agrees that a positive mental attitude must
have something to do with his survival: “I must be
doing something right. I’ll tell you what it is. Sex,
drugs and rock ‘n’ roll!”

Ian North, 55 years old, a local lad from Barlaston

The Inner Wheel Club
T
he Inner Wheel Club of Uttoxeter held its handover
meeting at the home of Mrs Fiona Kerby. Our
President for 2016/17 is Mrs Fiona Coffin. Plans for
the coming year were outlined and members enjoyed a ‘bring
and share’ supper. The President’s charities for the year are
Alzheimer’s Research UK and the Holly Road Supportive
Care Centre at The Hermitage.
The first fundraising event will be a lunch at Bramshall
Village Hall on 18th September when the speaker will be
Mary Pritchard MA, President of the Arthur Ransome Society
who will give an illustrated talk with an emphasis on

The JCB Academy in July
to participate in a variety of
fun, informative and
interactive challenges as
part of their annual
‘Women into Engineering’
event. The event is part of
an initiative to encourage
more women to take up
careers in engineering. Pete
Caine, Marketing and PR
Manager at The JCB
Academy, said, “The event
gives us a great opportunity
to explain what engineering
is and the wide range of
careers available in a fun
and interactive way”.
The event consists of an
informative session
followed by interactive and
fun engineering based
challenges including the
Egg Crash and Build a
Crane. The firm favourite
seems to be the Egg Crash,
where the girls customise a
pre-built cart using a range
of craft material with the
intention of protecting the
enclosed egg. The cart is
then rolled down a ramp
into a fixed panel. Year 12
student, Caitlin Foy from
The JCB Academy who
helped out on the day said
“Having spent 30 minutes
designing their protective
cart, the girls get very
anxious when their cart is
suspended at the top of the
ramp ready for the drop.
The atmosphere is
fantastic.”

Technology who were also
on hand to help the girls.

Golden Memories from one of Uttoxeter’s Favourite Characters
A
few weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting
up with a very dear old friend of mine for a
bevy Mr Mark Orme.
Almost 50 years ago after taking over my
father’s printing hobby and struggling to make a
decent living out of it as a full time career, being at
that time being a naive young lad, Mark
approached me with a proposition.
I could have the job of printing all the tickets
and posters for his various pop concerts and
venues in the area, If I was to in return help him to
sell tickets for these events and advertise them for
him.
Mark in those days was a very successful
entrepreneur anyway after taking over from his
father and running alongside other members of the
family the Ormes retail empire and coupled with
his work he had done for the youngsters of the
town when he was elected as a town councillor
with a vast majority. I felt honoured to accept his
proposal, I personally think Mark really did this to
help me get my business off the ground because he
believed in me and I am glad he did, the printing
contract allowed me to draw a liveable wage for a
number of years and allowed me to continue on to
what I built it up to now.
I can remember one time when Mark was
running the Menswear department at their shop in
High Street I called in with £15.00 which I had
received in birthday present money to purchase a
jacket. Ormes in those days were renowned for
quality goods and their shops were probably some
of the finest buildings in the town centre and up to
this day still are, their menswear shop in High
Street which is now occupied by the YMCA
Charity Shop still to this present day has in the
doorway the Ormes name emblazoned in mosaic
tiles on the floor of the entrance hall.
On approaching Mark with my request he
showed me various designs and qualities that he
had in stock for my available budget and then said
come with me. He took me up the magnificent
staircase in the premises up to the 1st floor and
said “this is what a lad of stature
requires”whereupon he showed me a superb high
class leather lounge jacket with an equally high
class price tag.
“This is just you” he beamed “try it on”. I did
just that. I had never worn anything in my life of
that quality ever before in my humble upbringings
and it fitted me like a glove, even the staff
commentated that I looked the bees knees in it.
“How much, Mark” I enquired. “Only £40.00
to you”, he answered. I replied to Mark that
£40.00 was well beyond my available budget
thinking also that he was out for a decent sale,
untrusting as I was at that time and probably still
are where money is involved with everyone after
making a fast buck. These assertions however were
soon quelled when he said that I could pay him off
over any period of time I like at no extra cost if I
left the £15 I had as a deposit. I took him up on
his offer because of again his trust in me and I glad
I did. I did enquire with other retailers roundabout
the area with similar attire and not one of those
came close to Mark’s price for a jacket of the same
quality and sale terms.
Ever since those days Mark has been a very
good friend of mine and hope he continues to be
so in the future. It is a great shame as well that age
has crept upon him and he no longer offers his
business acumen to the general public along with
his skills in organising weekly dances in the area
which gave young and old alike something to look
forward to at weekends, also the loss of the Ormes
retail empire which unfortunately is no longer in
existence in the town where service and quality has
been unequalled, to me, in the area ever since.

Fire Down Below
O
ur kid, Alison, and her partner Paul live
in a typical late-Victorian terrace house in
south London. They bought it fifteen
years ago before prices went really mad.
On 1 November 2015 Paul went downstairs at
09.00 to make a cuppa, which they were soon
enjoying in bed, relaxed, looking at emails. It was
a Sunday. Strangely ... the internet died. “What’s
going on ?”
At 09.05 it all kicked off ....
“What’s that wailing noise ?” Smoke alarm!
Hell ! Dive out of bed... strong smell of smoke on
the landing... downstairs hall filling up with
smoke... kitchen solid with black smoke.
“Get the front door open.”
“Where’s the key ?”“ Don’t know. Can’t see”.
“ Phone 999.”
“The landline is dead! “Mobile, Mobile, where
is it?” It was now becoming more difficult to see.
Alison tried to open the French door onto the back
yard but it swells up in winter and was stuck. Paul
finally got the front door open, but it makes one
think... what if he had not got it open... could they
get out through a bedroom window? Do they open
easily?
Being musicians they wanted to get their
instruments out. So there they were... out in the
street... neighbours helping... bare feet, pyjamas, a
flute and four double-basses.
The Fire Service arrived in seven minutes; two
men with the breathing equipment were in the
house in seconds and quickly had the fire out.
They were excellent. They opened or smashed
windows to let out smoke and stayed for two
hours to ensure that it was all safe. Alison got a
hug from the fire chief... and felt better!
Neighbours were brilliant. Clothes were found;
people they had never met came with refreshments
and offers of help. Teams came to dig up the road
and cut off gas and electric. Juliet who lives nearby
kindly offered them somewhere to live whilst
things were sorted. A basic kit of clothes was
bought next day.
Also next day the Fire Forensics team came.
The verdict: an electrical fault in a freezer in the
cellar was to blame; it was about one year old. The
Fire team said that in the London area they
averaged one fire per week starting in a freezer.
Under the stairs and next to bone dry panelling it
was perfect for bonfire night. Everything in the
kitchen was black, completely ruined; metal looked
like it had been corroded with acid; plaster was
cracking off the walls; the ceiling was hanging
down; most windows were broken; doors burned;
staircase trashed etc. Smoke damage was
throughout the house. Total rewiring was needed.
More Than Insurance came. One hears stories
about claims not being honoured, but More Than
were 100%. They sent Geoff from Ellipta to assess
the work that would be needed; he made schedules
which were put out to contractors. Ellipta were
also very busy in Cumbria dealing with flood
damage.
The house had to be completely emptied.
Furniture that could be saved was sent for storage
or cleaning. All carpets went in the skip together
with everything in the kitchen, from cooker to
cookbooks, cupboards, pans, the lot !
After three weeks More Than found them a
rented house nearby in which they could live for
six months... £4400 per month... London prices...
thank you More Than, you were brilliant.
In January the work began; all the tradesmen
proved to be first class. It surprised me where they
came from; very few were local; Tim and Dan the
joiners came from Devon, staying at a hotel during
the week. On their first night all the tools were
nicked from the van.
As I write the kitchen has been fitted, building
and joinery work is complete; new carpets are
down; decorating is finished; furniture is due back
from cleaning or storage; all services are re-
connected.

CB employees have marked a production
milestone for a machine that revolutionised the
agricultural industry.
It is exactly 25 years ago this month that the
Fastrac tractor started rolling off the production
line - heralding the introduction of the world’s first
high speed tractor with full all round suspension
capable of high performance both on the road and
also in the field.
Conventional wisdom had always suggested a
tractor of that kind was not possible but the
introduction of the JCB Fastrac exploded the myth.
It was JCB Chairman Lord Bamford who
struck on the idea of manufacturing an
unconventional tractor while he was on holiday
overseas in 1984. He saw an opportunity to
develop a tractor that had high road speed and
which would also be capable of field work.
Today JCB produces a range of seven Fastracs
at its factory in Cheadle, capable of speeds of up
to 50 mph. They are exported all over the world
with key territories including the UK, Germany,
North America and Australia.
Lord Bamford paid tribute to the JCB engineers
who brought the Fastrac concept to life. He said:
“The Fastrac is a remarkable example of JCB’s
innovative engineering culture at its best. The
concept of a tractor better equipped for road travel
and transportation tasks, but also very capable at
undertaking demanding field work, has proven its
worth over the years, in terms of increased
productivity and lower operating costs.”

My Monthly Musings

A
s I write, Summer is here at last and it has
been a fantastic Summer of sport. Yes I
know, Gareth Bale didn’t score the winning
goal against England but Wales got a lot further
than expected by getting into the Quarter Finals and
Semi Finals. As they were knocked out by Portugal,
I was firmly rooting for France in the Final. My hurt
Welsh pride was not the only reason for wanting the
Home nation to win. I feel that France has suffered
greatly in recent times. Its popular satirical
magazine, bars and restaurants, national stadium
and main concert venue, all located in Paris, have
been targeted with huge losses. I feel that France
deserved a bit of luck and a reason to celebrate.
The Euros passed off peacefully and I really
enjoyed the whole event. What a shock to wake up
on the morning of July 15th, the day after the
National Day in France, to the atrocity in Nice. If
you, or any one you know, has been to the South of
France and visited Nice, a walk along Promenade
des Anglais would have been a certainty. Northern
France featured in the News as we were reminded
of the horrors of War earlier in the month when the
centenary of the Battle of the Somme was
recognised. I heard a wonderful story recently about
a British Major who crossed No Man’s Land to
remove the body of one of his soldiers who had
been shot but was still alive. The Germans laid
down their weapons and, as he picked up the dying
man and carried him back to his platoon, their
supposed enemies applauded.
When Mark Cavendish won the 1st Stage of the
Tour de France at Utah Beach in Normandy he
dedicated his award to the men who lost their lives
there and on the other D Day beaches as the Allies
attempted to relieve France and put an end to the
German assault. Any of the young men of either
World War could have lived and worked side by side
in their ordinary lives as we have lived alongside our
European neighbours since 1973.
At 14, I was not interested in politics and
remember being only vaguely aware of what was
happening. My parents were firmly in favour of
‘The Common Market’ as it was then and part of
the reason was that they were fearful of future wars
and believed that a united Europe would prevent
another war. The result of the Referendum has
taken us out of the EU and this is no place to debate
the pros and cons.
It also seems wrong to muse on War and Politics
when the sun is shining… yet July 14th 2016 was a
beautiful day and evening in Nice. Until a different
sort of enemy struck. With that sobering thought…
you’ll hear from me next month.

Henry Mountford -
Denstone College Prep
School U11 cricket star
H
enry Mountford has a
batting average of 201 for his
school, Denstone College
Prep, this year. He has scored three
fifties, with a highest score of 71* and
has only been dismissed once. His
record for Staffordshire is even more
impressive – he has passed fifty on
two occasions and against
Nottinghamshire he recorded his first
century, 101*. He has yet to be
dismissed at county level this season.
He is only 11 years old.
Henry started playing cricket as a
six year old at Stone SPCC in
Staffordshire, when he made his
debut for the U9 side. In the past five
years has also played for U11 and
U13 XIs and has represented
Staffordshire at District and County
Levels for the last four years, having
represented Staffordshire at a district
level when he was just eight years old.
At County Level, he was
nominated as Batsman of the Festival
at Repton County Cricket Festival
and this season he has won Batting
and Bowling awards at his own
group levels of U11 and U13.
Not surprisingly, in his time at
Denstone College Prep School, he has
been an invaluable asset for the
school team, as well as playing for the
County U11, for which his first three
innings he scored 55 not out, 71 not
out and on 6th July, 105 not out,
contributing to an impressive batting
average of 210 runs.
Next term, he will be going to
Denstone College with a sports
scholarship, where alongside cricket,
he is also a keen rugby player and
swimmer.
His coaching influences must be
mentioned; Ian Trott from Denstone
College where Henry has benefitted
from one-to-one training, and James
Dawson, a constant in his cricketing
life so far, Head Coach from Stone
SPCC.

Hi there, I’m Amy Bradley and drawing really is my
favourite thing! I work from my gorgeous studio at
St.Mary’s House in Uttoxeter creating illustrations for all
kinds of projects such as; picture books, branding, wedding
stationery, educational projects and SO much more…
Every month I will be giving you a sneak peek into what
I’ve been up to! I’m so excited!!
NEWS from the Studio…
I
don’t know about you
but at the start of every
year I write a list
named.... ‘Things I must do
this year’ (Oh how I love a
list!!).
Fourth on that list this
year was.... ‘Go to the Lake
District and visit where
Beatrix Potter did her
work!’ It made it on to the
list because I’ve been
meaning to do it for
agggeeessss and of course...
for the very small (I mean
absolutely massive!!) fact
that Beatrix is one of my ALL time, favourite, illustrating
superstars!! Wooohoooo!
I grew up reading all Beatrix Potter’s magical stories.
Peter Rabbit was predictably my all time favourite, going to
see ‘Peter Rabbit On Ice’ at Alton Towers as child was
definitely one of mine and my sisters favourite memories.
As an adult I still adore the works of Beatrix and now as
an Illustrator it fascinates me even more so! I just love how
Beatrix never gave up on her pursuit to get ‘The Tale Of
Peter Rabbit’ published – against all the odds and against
her ‘well-to-do’ parents wishes she thankfully got her first
publishing deal in her early 30’s!! Yay!! Nice one Bea!!
I wanted to visit ‘Hill Top’ the cottage which Beatrix
brought with the royalties she made from her books and
which is the place where she did all her works from, gaining
inspiration from the beautiful countryside it’s situated in.
Also for me, to be able to my job as best as I can, I figure I
should always be looking for ways to learn and I reckon
learning from one of the best is probably a good place to
start hey!
Now... I didn’t go alone on my travels, I managed to
rally my sister and a couple of friends together to come
along too... I told them we were going on a nice little
‘walking holiday’ with plenty of beer gardens and time for
relaxation... it was just a coincidence that we happened to
be passing the National Trust owned cottage – ‘Hill Top’
too! Honest! Here’s a picture of us all in our walking entire
outside the cottage...
As we all walked up to the cottage it doesn’t take a
rocket scientist to see where Beatrix got her inspiration
from for Mr.McGregor’s garden and when you take a peek
inside the cottage you soon learn it has been preserved
exactly the way Beatrix instructed it to be. As you delve a
bit deeper it’s not long before your spotting items from her
stories – just take a look at these
pictures…
So... whilst on my visit to ‘Hill
Top’ I learnt that Beatrix had an
eye for collecting beautiful objects,
for buying quint pieces of furniture
and for finding beautiful
surroundings that she then
interpreted into her stories and
illustrations. It truly had such a
lovely and ‘magical’ feel at the
cottage and I can completely
understand how Beatrix could let
her imagination loose there.
With even more admiration for
Beatrix’s work – I hope, (pray) and
dream that one day I might follow
in her footsteps.

Karen’s Cake Corner

American Style Pancakes with
Whipped Coconut Cream, Maple
Syrup and Cherries
W
hen the kids were growing up, I
must have made hundreds of these
pancakes for my children and their
friends. This summer holiday is no exception,
and as I have already made about fifty over
the last few weeks, I thought I should
provide the recipe.
They are so simple to make and really
popular with everyone, and make a great
snack or brunch. I usually serve them with
maple glazed bacon, but this time I served
them as a desert with a healthier option to
cream.
This recipe serves 2-4 people
3 large free range eggs
115g/4oz plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
140ml/5 fl oz milk
pinch of salt/sugar depending on sweet or
savoury
Coconut Whipped Cream
1 tin coconut milk
a little vanilla extract or honey to taste
First separate the eggs into two bowls.
Add the flour, baking powder and milk to the
yolks and mix until you have a smooth thick
batter. In the other bowl, whisk the egg
whites with the salt or sugar until they form
stiff peaks. Fold the egg whites into the
batter. It is now ready to use.
Heat a good non stick frying pan on a
medium heat. Pour a couple of spoonfuls
into your pan and fry for a couple of minutes
until it starts to look golden and firm, then
flip over and continue to fry until both sides
are golden. The pancakes are wonderfully
fluffy and thick. You can usually do four at
a time. I have served mine simply doused
with maple syrup. You can also add fruit
such as blueberries to your batter which are
also delicious.
To make the Coconut whipped cream,
simply place an unopened upside down can
of coconut milk in the fridge overnight.
Open the can and drain out the coconut milk
that has separated from the cream. Scoop out
the cream and whip with a handheld mixer
until it fluffs up. Add the vanilla or honey
and whip again. This cream is light and dairy
free, and full of healthy fats.
These really are so simple to make and a
real treat served with ice cream and
strawberries, drizzled with maple syrup.

Lightening your hair colour in the summer

This season is all about soft and cool blondes
with an influence of violet and ash tones, to give
the hair a clean and fresh look.
Choosing the right Blonde
If you have a darker natural base it will be a
warmer blonde when lightened and will take
several appointments to get your hair to a light
blonde, if you have a lighter base it will you will
achieve a cleaner and ashier blonde, remember to
take your eye colour and skin tone into account
when deciding on your shade of blonde, the hair
can sometimes feel drier after a lightening service.
Blonde Hair Care
I recommend using a spray product with UV
protection the Moroccanoil Heat Protect is an
amazing product and smells great, this will act as
a defence against the suns harmful rays, which can
lead to dry hair and fading of your colour. Using
masques and conditioner’s for dry hair are a great
way to replenish moisture content and control
frizz, I recommend the Moroccanoil Intense
Restorative Mask. If you have any unwanted
brassy tones between appointments you can use a
Silver shampoo to eliminate these which is
specifically designed to neutralise warm tones.
Looking hot for longer
Once your hair is clean and dry, turn your head
upside down and use a blast of dry shampoo in the
nape of the neck and on the hairline behind your
ears, this is where heat builds up and perspiration
can cause the hair to collapse, the dry shampoo
will act as an hair antiperspirant and give you
hotter hair for longer, I recommend the
Morroccanoil Light or Dark tones dry shampoo.

Ginny’s Community Corner

R
ecently Lloyds Bank
did a study about how
supermarkets can add
value to your house price,
apparently having a Waitrose
nearby can add 10% to the
value. That shows a monetary
value to having Waitrose in
your vicinity, but how about
the non-monetary value it
adds. Recently I was invited to
Waitrose in Uttoxeter, where
the first “Community
Matters” cheques were being
handed over to three local
community groups and of
course I had to ask questions,
you know me, what does
Community Matters means
and how does it work?
Waitrose likes to be part of
the community that it is
located in and as such, they
have a couple of schemes
running, the first is
“Community Matters”,
whereby each month they give
away £1000 that is divided
between three local charities.
The charities are nominated
by both the public and their
partners (the employees are
called partners, because they
own part of the business). The
three charity names go onto a
Perspex box at the end of the
check outs and after you pay
for your shopping, you get a
green disc and you put the
disc into the box that has the
charity that you want to see
get a proportion of the £1000,
some charities are more
popular than others and so if
the green discs are higher in
one than another, they get a
bigger proportion. To
nominate a charity/good
cause, just fill in a form at the
Welcome Desk in store.
The three charities that
were present at the first event
were Scropton Riding School
for the Disabled, Art and Soul
and SV2 (supporting victims
of sexual violence).
Scropton Riding School
for the disabled is an amazing
charity that is open 6 days a week, with 25 horses,
that can be ridden either in the indoor riding centre
or in the outdoor ring. They offer non-disabled
riders lessons to fundraise for the charity. They are
able to take disabled children from 5 yrs. old and
wheelchair users are able to be involved with
carriage driving, which ensures they are included
too. Matthew Dalley was present to collect the
cheque; he has been going to Scropton from the
age of 6 and is now 22yrs old. He is deaf and
cannot speak, but his colleague Glynis Dalley,
Charity Manager explained the huge benefits that
it has for him, she commented, “he has come out
of himself and has found confidence, enough so,
that he has found that Twitter is his way of
communicating and now runs the centres Twitter
page @ScroptonRDA”. If you put Equine-assisted
therapy (EAT) into google, you will find lots of
studies that show that horses are a truly magical
way to encourage all sorts
of disabled children and
adults to develop in every
area of their lives. Call

get all the information you
need to take part, either as
a volunteer or to ride a
horse.
Art and Soul are based
in Uttoxeter and they
support people with
mental health issues, by
running workshops, art
and crafts groups,
computer skills suite, mood
management course and a
befriending service, that
allows people who are
experiencing mental health
issues not to feel isolated or
devalued, but instead to
feel included and valued,
which is a hugely
important part of their
recovery. Call 01889
359243 if you feel you
want to access their
service.
SV2 (supporting victims
of sexual violence) is a
Derbyshire organisation,
that has a 24hr advice line,
01773 746115. They deal
with the very sensitive issue
of sexual violence. As a
society we don’t like to think
about it, but luckily the
organisation are there to
provide emotional support
through the help line, then
help with the process of
coming to terms with the
violence and uniquely act as
advocates if you want to
report the offence and will
also support you if you have
to go to court. They also run
a scheme for schools, called
Consent Workshops, these are
invaluable educational
workshop for all children, so
they understand that NO
means NO! Although the
work of SV2 is hard to think about, if you need
them, then call the number and they can help.
The three charities give the first cheques are I
am sure you agree a huge asset to our community,
but they change each month, so next month could
be something you have nominated, just fill in the
form at the Welcome Desk and put your green
token in the box! So far the Waitrose group as a
whole has donated £10m to over 30,000 different
organisations in the UK, which is a staggering
figure and now Uttoxeter charities are benefitting
from the scheme, as the cheque presentation
proved.
However there is another element to the
supermarkets community involvement, it’s called
Partner Volunteering. The scheme is very simple, if
you need the skills of the partners (employees) to
help out in your organisation, then they will
consider your request and be in touch. All you have
to do is fill in a form, the questions couldn’t be
simpler, “What does your organisation do?”,
“How does the organisation benefit the local
community? “, “How you would like Waitrose to
help?”,“Is there a specific project or goal that you
would like their help with?” Once the form has
been completed, just hand it to the Welcome Desk
and they will be in touch. Because Waitrose is new
to the area, they are only just receiving requests
and look forward to reviewing them all soon, so
get your form in to be considered.
And if that’s not enough, they have a final
element and I think really wonderful element to
community involvement. As some of you who run
charities know, you might not have a lovely
meeting room to use when you have a meeting or
an event, but now you do! The Community Room,
which is located at the back of the Uttoxeter Store,
can be booked for your community group. It is
completely free of charge and the room
accommodates up to 20 people and is equipped
with Wi-Fi and Apple TV.
If you want refreshments you can buy them
from the Bakery which is right next to the
Community Room. All you need to do is contact
Fiona Bennett via communitymattersuttoxeter@
waitrose.co.uk with the following details: Name of
the Organisation, Type of meeting/event, your
preferred date and time, number of people using
the room and your contact details and they will get
back to you within 72hrs, or if you are in store
then just go to the Welcome Desk.
So although all our houses will now be more
valuable as a result of Waitrose being in town, I
think more importantly our community will be
more valuable as a result of their presents in our
town, plus we get to eat really yummy food too.

they are AMAZING.

Have I got news for you

The truth about Bruce Springsteen and
me
The story so far… this is how I started this
column last month:
A few weeks ago I walked into a pub in Dublin
and ordered a couple of drinks. Before the barman
had finished pouring them, Bruce Springsteen came
in and sat on the bar stool next to me.“I remember
you,” he said.
I promised you that all of the above is true, and
I also confessed that it was not the whole truth.
Then I told you what to expect at this year’s Lark
in the Park (which I hope you enjoyed). That was a
deliberate distraction and got in the way of the cliff-
hanger.
I hope the explanation of what really happened
in Dublin doesn’t disappoint. So let’s put this in
context.
Yes, I’m a massive Springsteen fan. Yes, I
consider him the world’s greatest rock performer –
and his three-and-a-half-hour shows have been
proving that all night, every night on his latest tour.
The legendary E Street Band
The River Tour– named after the 1980 double
album –underlines that at the age of nearly 67 he is
at a peak and his E Street Band are better than ever.
The tour has grossed more money and been seen by
more people this year than any other. The Rolling
Stones, Coldplay, Beyoncé, Madonna, and Taylor
Swift all trail Bruce.
And the biggest live music star on the planet
walked into a bar and sat next to me.
Why? Well, it wasn’t personal. I was in town for
his two shows at the massive Croke Park stadium.
The gigs were on a Friday and Sunday with the
Saturday off – an obvious concession to the age of
the star and most of his band.
There’s a well-regulated, semi-official process
for getting into the front-of-stage or ‘pit’ area at
Springsteen shows.
Turn up – even days before the event – and
someone takes your name and writes a number on
the back of your hand in indelible marker. Then, at
a series of roll calls spaced out over the day, you
return to ensure your place in the queue before
finally assembling on the day of the show and filing
into the venue in numerical order before the gates
have officially opened.
I arrived early – on the Thursday - with a view
to claiming a place near the front of the stage. In
the pit queue there’s inevitably a lot of chat and you
get to meet people.
My daughter Alice and I duly signed up to the
queue and then wandered off to explore Dublin. It
was when we returned to the Croke Park Hotel and
visited the bar for a nightcap that the two chatty
young Irish women who’d been immediately in
front of us in the pit line beckoned us over.
“We met him.”
“He smelled lovely.”
“His hands were so soft.”
It transpired that they’d ventured, rather self-
consciously, into the bar of the luxurious city centre
hotel where the band was staying, and who should
they see but Bruce and his wife, singer Patti Scialfa,
having a drink. They were apparently happy to chat
and it made the young fans’ day.
Meeting Across The River
Now, I am no stalker. I have no interest in where
Bruce and Mrs Springsteen lay their weary heads
and the thought of paying over the odds for a Coke
on the off-chance of mumbling a few platitudes did
not appeal. But I did confess to being an
appropriately emerald shade of green with envy at
their encounter.
“Well,” said one of the girls,“if you did want to
see him, he’ll be in the Long Hall for sure. He
always drinks in there, so he does.”
“Always” seemed unlikely. One thing I do know
is that Bruce Springsteen is one of the hardest-
working men in rock, and he didn’t earn that
reputation by propping up a Dublin bar whenever
he’s not on stage.
But the Long Hall seemed worth a visit anyway.
It’s a distinctive wood-panelled Victorian bar, once
featured in a music video by Phil Lynott of Thin
Lizzy.
So it was that we dropped in that Saturday
afternoon, and literally within a minute of doing so
turned round to see Bruce and three young men
walk in. I welcomed him – like you do – and he
enquired if the stool at the bar was free. I think I’d
have said yes even if the heavyweight champion of
the world had just left that seat to pop to the gents’.
Bruce ordered a round of Redbreast, a favourite
Irish whiskey, which he wanted to introduce to one
of the lads, who had recently celebrated his 21st
birthday. Someone stepped up and tried to take a
flash photograph. “Please no pictures,” he said.
As other people craned forward, I found myself
repeating that mantra: “No pictures please. He
doesn’t want any pictures.”
Man At The Top
The other customers seemed to think I was
Bruce’s bodyguard, which made sense as I was
standing right next to him and protecting him from
intrusion for the best part of half an hour. It also
meant I couldn’t ask him for a photo myself,
because that would have given the game away that
I was no more part of the entourage than the selfie-
seekers. So the only souvenirs I have to prove my
story are pictures like the one here, snatched by
other drinkers, even as I was telling them not to!
I thought the young men he was with must have
been the sons of band members or close friends. I
later realised that one of them was one of the
cameramen from the show. It impressed me that he
took the stage crew for a drink. As did the size of
the tip he left after paying for two rounds of drinks.
And that comment about him remembering me?
Well, I cheekily suggested that he must recall the
time during the original River Tour in 1981, when
I met him and shook his hand as he was leaving the
NEC in Birmingham. His response was delivered
with a smile, but with all the sarcasm that my
comment deserved. That was good enough for me.
So you see, I left out a lot of what was said
between Bruce’s arrival, and the moment he
“recognised” me. And as this was a private
occasion, and even the greatest rock ‘n’ roll
performer in the world is entitled to a reasonable
expectation of privacy, it will stay that way.
Unless - a bit like Bruce - you follow me into a
bar. Buy me a drink and I might tell you about the
time I met the Boss!

Kerry and Russ Fisher, of Uttoxeter, will
walk The Manifold Way in the
Staffordshire Moorlands on Saturday 26
September – the day before our own Five
Valleys Walk. The heartbroken parents of
baby Rubie Fisher, who was just six
weeks old when bacterial meningitis
stole her short life, are organising a 17-
mile walk to remember her and to raise
cash for Meningitis Now.
Their walk starts at 9.30am from the Hulme
End visitor centre at the northern end of the route,
with stops at Wetton Mill and Waterhouses. So far,
around 40 of their family and friends are taking
on the challenge with them and anyone else who
wants to take part is invited to join in. Those doing
so can cycle or walk and do as much or as little of
the route as they feel like doing.
For those who don’t know it, The Manifold
Way is a multi-user route along the Manifold
Valley following the former Leek and Manifold
Light Railway through the attractive Staffordshire
Moorlands. This trail is an easy route being on a
tarmacadam track and minor roads between
Waterhouses and Hulme End.
The route has been open since the 1930s when
the railway closed, and is probably the earliest case
of a disused railway line being converted to a
walkers’ and cyclists’ route.
The path passes through attractive scenery, and
indeed tourism was one of the reasons for the
original construction of the line. Popular locations
along the route include Thor’s Cave, the mill at
Wetton Hill and Beeston Tor. A little to the east lies
Dovedale, a better-known beauty spot.

F
ollowing the Brexit vote, neither the Tories
nor Labour have covered themselves in glory
in their respective leadership battles, with
back stabbing all around.
Theresa May is the best choice the Tories could
have made, as she at least has some b***s
(metaphorically speaking of course), and getting
rid of Osbourne was great news, perhaps we won’t
hand so much money China’s way now to the
depredation of our own Industry, but Boris as
Foreign Secretary?
After Cameron’s departure it was disclosed that
he is, allegedly, rewarding all his cronies with gongs
and the like, even his wife’s fashion designer.
Whilst the debacle on the other side of the
chamber continues with Labour not having yet
decided who is to be their leader to take them into
the next General Election, as Corbyn won’t take
the hint and let go of the reigns.
We have a man in North Korea letting off
weapons of mass destruction willy nilly, the
frightful prospect of Trump becoming President of
the USA, and Lord knows what Putin is going to
do next, so they need someone with a sensible head
on his shoulders, but does Owen Smith have
enough support outside of Parliament to oust
Corbyn who wants to get rid of our defensive
weapons. I’m sorry Jeremy, but an extra Battalion
of Grenadier Guards is not an answer to a missile!
Didn’t Wales do well in the footie? Getting to
the semi finals, despite being beaten by England in
Fergie time, but finally being knocked out when a
ball into the penalty area hit Ronaldo, the biggest
head, and biggest ego in the competition, and went
into the back of the net, then having their fate
sealed when the same person mis-kicked the ball
for Nani to prod home the final nail. But it had
been a great effort by a couple of stars, combined
with a group of big hearted unknowns from the
lower divisions who gave a hundred and ten
percent, as opposed to certain other over paid
prima donna’s running around like headless
chickens! Will they be Team of the Year? Doubtful
with Leicester’s exploits last term, and let us not
forget England’s Rugby Heroes beating Australia
on their own turf on no less than three occasions,
which went virtually unreported due to the Euros
16 dominating proceedings.
With Andy Murray winning Wimbledon again
that will probably sew up the Sports Personality of
the Year, no matter what our Olympians do in Rio,
including of course Uttoxeter’s Adam Peaty who is
the pride of our area and our country winning a
fantastic Gold Medal and also a Silver in the Relay.
But at least Murray went to Rio and superbly won
another Gold Medal which is more than can be
said for some of the top golfers who used the Zika
Virus as an excuse to pull out. I’m sure the fact that
there was no money in it did not have any bearing
on their decision what so ever! I was disgusted with
McIlroy’s comment, that he was not interested in
promoting his sport, only winning - spoken like a
true Millionaire! Especially when the swimmers,
and athletes etc put their lives on hold to represent
their Country, often having to grovel for
sponsorship. I hope you are proud of yourself
Rory.
Staying with the sporty theme, Uttoxeter Rugby
Football Club are now in full training twice a week
at Oldfields under Graham McDonald who is now
Director of Rugby. They are a great bunch of
young lads who are really getting stuck in ready
for the oncoming season, now that they have won
promotion back into Midlands 3 (West) North
where they should be. In the last edition I loved the
picture of Rugby Club President Nigel Titterton
(our Editor) as a young man holding his trophies
won in the round ball game. Those eyes remind me
of one of the children in Village of the Damned
Nige!
The Churnet Valley Male Voice Choir still
based at the Bishop Rawle School in Cheadle, are
currently rehearsing on alternate Tuesdays, and
have no planned concerts until November. We
support good causes for Charity free of charge, for
other functions such as weddings we accept
donations. As a small outfit of just twenty
members we are ideal for small venues, and have a
varied range of music. If you need a choir for a
wedding or a show, why not give us a try?

In July The Denstone Players performed
another successful, and as always, well supported
play in Denstone Village Hall, with Noel Coward’s
Blithe Spirit packing them in. For those who are
not familiar with the story it is a romantic comedy,
and was directed by Marge Stanley, who brought
the best out of the cast, who performed it in it’s
original form which is a very ‘wordy’ production,
a bit like the Ken Dodd show it ran very late!
The Players now look forward to their next
offering over two nights only - 31st Sept and 1st
Oct, which although taking the form of a Variety
Night, will include two short, but hilarious plays
‘Strewth’ and ‘ A Colliers Tea’, as well as a number
of other individual mouth watering acts. Along
with the current ‘Regulars’ Dennis Parker BEM
has been lured out of retirement to do his party
piece, and the popular duo Sorby and Johnson
from the Churnet Valley MVC, have kindly offered
to do a couple of their comedy numbers for us.
Proceedings will of course take place in Denstone
Village Hall.
In these terrible times we live in where
shootings and suicide bombings seem to be the
norm: we all need a good laugh to cheer us up, so
come along, it’s too good to miss for a meagre £7-
00 a ticket, and as regulars will tell you, the
Denstone Players are always good value for money
and no smut! The rehearsals begin for ‘Aladdin and
his Magical Lamp’ in October, and will again be
directed by the lovely Gill Brown so make a note
in your diary for the 23rd to 25th February next
year!
Finally with Summer now being upon us, of a
fashion, I remember when it used to be nice to go
for a drive, but these days on Country Roads every
time you go round a bend, you find yourself
looking up the lycra clad backside (I cleaned that
up) of cyclists, pedaling like crazy, but getting
nowhere fast, totally oblivious to you being stuck
in their slip stream but unable to get past safely.
When you finally get by you see a sign which says
‘Think Bike’, even worse, if you hit a group of them
they take up the whole road as if they own it. They
seem to not have to obey the rules of the road any
more, as they jump red lights, ignore cycle paths
which been provided for their own safety, and
some are extremely arrogant if you get in the
middle of them because a car is coming in the
opposite direction.
My wife and I were recently second in a long
line of cars unable to get past a solitary cyclist. The
vehicle in front of us was a Range Rover type
vehicle, who had tried several times to overtake
without success due to oncoming vehicles. When
he finally did get his chance it was in a huge
puddle, so he deliberately put his foot down and
produced a huge wave which drowned the luckless
cyclist, I must admit I cruelly laughed my socks off.

I
t was a case of follow the yellow (and black)
brick road when colourful Wizard of Oz
characters brought a touch of movie magic to
the 33rd JCB Lakeside Five and Fun Run.
Veteran participant Charles Bevan, who has
taken part in every one of the annual events, went
to town with his fancy dress costume –
transforming into the Scarecrow from the timeless
Hollywood musical blockbuster.
And this year, the former JCB Chief Electrical
Engineer drafted in his family and friends to play
the parts of the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, the
Wicked Witch of the West and, of course, Dorothy.
The fancy dress five were among more than
300 runners of all ages and abilities who lined up
for the five-mile senior race and 2.3 mile fun run
around countryside near to JCB’s World HQ in
Rocester, Staffs.
For the first time in 20 years the course was
changed and the direction was reversed adding a
bit of spice for veteran runners. Despite this, the
ever-popular event was right on course to raise
around £3,000 for the NSPCC through entry fees
and other donations.
Organiser Mick Grindey, 54, who has also
completed every one of the 33 races said the event
was as successful as ever.
Mick, of Uttoxeter, said: “Everyone seemed to
enjoy it – we had great weather and there was a
big turn out. I really like the new course. We’ll be
looking for feedback over the next few weeks to
see what everyone thought as we plan for next
year.”

and 46 seconds. James, 28 from Stafford, said: “I
was delighted with the victory. It was tougher and
warmer than I thought when I set out but you can
see as you go around everyone really enjoys this
event.”
First lady was 45-year-old Sharleen
Hollinshead, from Cheadle, who was back at the
event after a two-decade break. She crossed the line
in 32 minutes.
Charlene said: “I last ran the JCB Lakeside 5
about 20 years ago. Since then I have had a son
and got busy with other things in my life. So I lost
interest in running for a few years but I got back
into it quite recently, so it’s fantastic to do so well.”
Meanwhile, first JCB Man across the line was
JCB Attachments Product Marketing Manager
Dave Allen, of Upper Tean, in a time of 30 minutes
and 38 seconds. First JCB Lady was Group
Financial Controller Amy Gamble in a time of 35
minutes and 27 seconds.
Charles, 69, of Abbots Bromley was cheered on
as he was the final competitor to cross the line. He
said: “I loved the new course and despite wearing
a costume made of straw and old sacks I wasn’t as
hot as I thought I would be.
He joked: “The problem was I took a detour to
follow the yellow brick road and got lost along the
way which is why I was last across the line!”
The event was sponsored by JCB Heavy
Products – which produces some of the global
company’s biggest machines including the JS
tracked excavator range and the ground-breaking
new Hydradig. Everyone who completed the
Lakeside 5 or the fun run was presented with a
unique JCB medal.

Bake’s Memoirs

I
went over to Oldfields Sports
Ground a couple of weeks ago with
Jamie Cullerton who is on Leek
Town’s management staff, we nipped
across to watch Uttoxeter Town play
Gresley Rovers who play in the same
league as Leek in a pre- season friendly.
Friendly it certainly wasn’t as both
teams went hammer and nails at it, a
thoroughly entertaining and competitive
game was 2-2 when I left just before the
end. Town would have been pleased with
the score and performance against their
higher ranked opponents and it puts
them in good heart for their new
campaign in the Midland Football
League.
I noticed they won their opening
league fixture against Chelmsley Town 2-
0, always nice to win your first game
particularly in a new league and hopefully
they can push on and give a good account
of themselves as they try and progress the
club up the non-league ladder.
I met up with committee member and
our editor Nige Titterton. He was very
enthusiastic about the season, they had a
good squad of players both experienced and
young players had been attracted to the club
and he felt that behind the scenes the club
was in good hands with former Uttoxeter
Town/Amateurs and Rocester player Pete
Douglas as chairman and a new
management set up.
The pitch was in magnificent condition
and it took me back over 50 years ago to my
first visit I remember to Oldfields Sports
Ground. The ground and facilities were as
good as anything around in those days and
my father took me to see Staffordshire play
Lancashire seconds at cricket. I would only be
about ten and as I recall I don’t think there was a
ball bowled as it rained all day! I had a scorecard
from the game but over the years mislaid it but two
of the names I remember playing for Lancashire
were David Green and Geoff ‘Noddy’ Pullar, who
also played for England. I checked that my
memory hadn’t deceived me over time and both
players represented Lancs at that period.
The ground was used for both football and
cricket, hosting all the major finals in the area, I
have team photographs of Rocester FC and
Rocester CC playing at the venue and would be
interested to know if Staffordshire played any
other games there. I paid a nostalgic visit into the
pavilion at half time where I picked up the last
issue of the ‘Voice’. I wasn’t able to do my column
as I was away on holiday. I had been to France for
the Wales game then off to the Algarve with the
dear wife for a couple of weeks. I don’t know
about you but a couple of weeks with just you and
the missus seems more like a month! I read
through the magazine as always but Jeff Wood’s
column really took my breath away. He mentioned
playing and opening the batting with Terry
Beardmore, furthermore he also said that he
outscored Terry on most occasions! Now that
would have been exciting to watch! Boycott and
Tavare come to mind. Imagine having to pay to
watch them four bat. Only joking Jeff.
Just before I went on holiday I had an invitation
to Graham McGarry’s (Radio Stoke sports
presenter) 40th wedding anniversary. (Or so I
thought). It was to be held at The Crewe Alexandra
suite. Off we set with a card and a nice bottle of
champagne for him and wife Barbara arriving in
Crewe about 7.20 for a 7.30 start, he told me there
was a sit down meal. When we got there I thought
there’s a lot of cars here and we made our way into
the foyer. I said to Ann my wife, ‘we’re late, I
thought you said half seven start’. She didn’t reply
and we made our way into the room. A loud cheer
went up which I thought was for me because of our
late arrival. I made my way to the bar noticing
people I knew and thinking, yes they would know
Graham and Barbara. I ordered drinks and people
kept coming up to shake my hand and then I
noticed Gilbert Mould and thought why would
Gilbert be here, he wouldn’t know Graham. Ann
then came up to me and thrust a programme in my
hand, on the front was a picture of me and the
words, a tribute night for Neil Baker in recognition
of his services to local football.
Talk about being gobsmacked! How on
earth had they managed to keep this away
from me? Graham, Andy Wain (former Leek
Town chairman) and Scott Kinnersley and
John Rogers (Crewe Alex supporters) had all
been instrumental in organising the evening.
Obviously Ann and the family had been
sworn to secrecy and said how difficult it
was not to let the cat out of the bag. Anyway
after the shock it turned out to be a night to
remember for me. There was a fish and chip
supper, a girl band, an Elvis tribute band
(which were superb), with auction and
raffle held (money raised has been donated
to RNIB).
There were a number of past and
present Alex players there including Mark
Rivers and Dean Ashton. Dean was not
only a terrific player who went onto play
for England but a super guy. A real level
headed lad who was first in for training
and the last to leave. Dean tells the story
of having got in the Crewe first team he
was selected for England U21. At the time
Dario was having a heart operation and
I and Steve Holland had taken over the
running of the team. Dean had a
nightmare and hardly tried a bat. I
battered him after the game and almost
withdrew him from his call up to the
International game he was due to play
in the following week. The next day I
received a text apologising for his
performance. He was man enough to
admit he had let the team down and
talks to this day of the Watford match
changing his outlook and his career
and that it would take more than talent
to succeed. We have got on really well
since that day and when he left to go to Norwich
and then West Ham he sent me a signed
photograph of him making his debut for Crewe
against Stockport County and earning his first cap
for the full England team against Jamaica. On it,
says, from this (his debut) to this (1st cap for
England), ‘the Watford game changed my career’.
Robbie Savage also said some kind words, life
was never dull when Rob was at Crewe. He went
on to have a fantastic career in the game, not the
most talented of players but didn’t he make up for
that with hard work and dedication and has since
gone on to be just as successful in the world of
football punditry. Now you might not always agree
with him but he doesn’t sit on the fence.
My old mate Stoke City fan Anton (TJ) Booth
was there with other familiar faces from the
Boothen End. A good gathering from Cheadle Utd
FC was present alongside a crowd from Leek Town
FC. A number of Crewe players and supporters
attended with numerous others from the local
footballing fraternity. Far too many to mention
individually.
It was really an honour to be recognised by so
many on the night. It was truly my privilege to
have so many friends and colleagues under the
same roof.

hen It was announced just over 30 years
ago that Uttoxeter was building a new
indoor pool, who could predict then that
30 years later with the hard work and dedication
of it’s founders, coaches swimmers and supporters
since, that Dove Valley ASC would be celebrating
it’s 30 year anniversary with a Celebratory Black
Tie Ball.
Bill Adshead the clubs president was one of the
original founders and he said “When I saw there
was going to be a new indoor pool, I spent 12
months promoting the idea of a new swimming
club and together with Peter Bryan and Paul
Gascoigne we managed to secure a one hour slot
on a Mondays to train as soon as the pool opened,
it seems crazy now with the intense training the
swimmers go through but we started by swimming
widths and eventually progressed to lengths as we
became more established. We managed to get more
people onboard and Sheila Hughes and Bob
Murray joined us enabling us to go to a gala at
Cheadle which I had organised to prepare for the
future, it was here we met Bernard and Frankie
Broadhurst who started to train our officials
enabling us to become a more professional club
and it grew from there.”
It was after this that the club really took off
with a number of swimmers and families moving
from Cheadle Dolphins to this new upcoming club,
many of which served the club for a great number
of years, and ensured it became well established.
The more established it became the more people
and families became involved ensuring the club
grew from strength to strength
It’s these people including Jason
and Rupert Hough, Phillipa Latham,
Kim Hill John Craske and Stephanie
Prince among many others they that
have enabled us to create first class
squads, county champions and dare
we dream an Olympic champion in
Adam Peaty.
“It’s thanks to all these people
from 30 years ago to present day and
the hardwork of the swimmers that
Dove Valley ASC is such a thriving
first class club which punches above
it weight in many competitions and it
is a pleasure to be involved” said
chairman John Plant.

to the Iconic Olympic pool in London
for a training session. Adam Peaty’s
amazing success has been inspiring
and the club have been following him
closely and to be able to swim in the
pool he recently won another
European gold Medal in would be a
dream for the swimmers.
Junior squad swimmer Annabelle
Mycock (age 10) said “We all love
training in the Adam Peaty Pool Hall
at Uttoxeter Leisure Centre, but to be able to swim
in the Olympic Pool where Adam has won gold
medals would be absolutely amazing, a chance of
lifetime” this feeling echoes through the whole club
with Ben Twynham (age 10) “Uttoxeter is a great
pool for us, but the Olympic Pool which we have
all seen on the TV with two 50 metre pools would
be just fantastic, something we would always
remember and tell our friends”
The Ball will be held on Saturday 24th
September 2016 at the outstanding Pirelli Stadium
in Burton upon Trent, where the evening will start
from 7 with the champagne reception sponsored
by Nigel Davies Solicitors followed by a delicious
3 course sit down meal at 8 pm. There will be live
entertainment, a mini auction, raffle, dancing and
bar until 1am. The cost per person is £45. There
are tables for 8 to 14 people.

Churnet Valley FC
Presentation
F
ollowing another successful season in the Uttoxeter & District Sunday
League, Churnet Valley held their annual presentation at The Pavilion,
Lightoaks, Oakamoor.
The function was held in the afternoon and attractions such as tug o’ war
and other competitions were laid on for players and visitors.
A number of awards were presented, notably to Jack Hassall and Elliott
Millin (pictured together). Jack won the Uttoxeter Sunday League Player of
the Season award and Elliott scooped the Secretary of the Season award.
Other principal awards went to Matt Burnett (Players’ Player) and Olly
Ley (Manager’s Player).
Valley finished third in their first season in Division 1, whilst at the same
time reaching the finals of the League Cup, the Uttoxeter Charity Trophy
(which they won) and the Ken Green Cup.
Valley are sponsored by Focus Education Teacher Supply Agency and The
Cricketers’ Arms, Oakamoor.

T
his year’s Cheadle 4 Mile Road Race saw
the 40th running of the event.The winner
was Cheddleton’s Matt Clowes, now
running for Cardiff AC. Clowes dominated the
race from the start opening up an ever increasing
lead over the rest of the field to finish in a time of
19.59, an agonizing 4 seconds outside the course
record. The quality of his run is shown by the fact
that this was the first time for 12 years that a
runner had dipped under 20 minutes on the course.
In addition he was almost 3 minutes clear of the
second placed runner, Luke Boulton of Trentham,
whose finishing time was 22.51. Carl Platt, also of
Trentham, was third for the second year running,
in a time of 23.02
In the ladies race the winner was Sharleen
Hollinshead of the hosts Cheadle Running Club
(24.59). Hollinshead was almost 2 minutes clear
of second placed runner Christine Defries of
Trentham Running Club, who finished in 26.48.
This was the 4th time that Hollinshead has won
the ladies race, her previous wins being in 1995,
2007 and 2008. Ruth Watchorn Rice also of
Cheadle Running Club came home third in 27.15.
There was further success for the host club with
Michelle Plant picking up the award for 1st LV35.
It was also a successful morning for Stone
Master Marathoners, with 4 of their runners
picking up age group prizes. Amy Gamble was 1st
LV40, Pam Davies 1st LV60, Joyce Edwards 1st
LV65 and Kevin Uzzell 1st MV65.
Cheadle’s Rob Mace kept up the remarkable
record of being the only runner to have competed
in all of the 40 races that have been held. At the
presentations after the race he was presented with
a commemorative plaque to recognise his fantastic
achievement.
A short fun run was as usual held before the
main race with 69 children and parents completing
the run. This was the biggest number of finishers
for 19 years. Cheadle Fair Trade Group provided
much appreciated goodies for the runners.
At the presentation race director Mick
Beardmore thanked the main sponsors of the race
Stoddard’s Ltd., Cheadle Carpets and Beds, Derek
Fower Transport, A.J.Beaman Construction Ltd
and Sportssage Cheadle for their sponsorship of
the event. Mick also thanked the many people who
had helped in the running of the event, especially
St John Ambulance, RAYNET and also Cheadle
Town Council for the use of the recreation ground.

Sport is in my blood...
by Jeff Wood of Cheadle, dedicated to local sport for a lifetime...
I
had a big surprise a few weeks ago when my
youngest lad Tim asked me if I wanted to go to
the open Golf Championship.
I have been to the Open many times in the past.
The first time I recall was in 1970 at St. Andrews
when Doug Sanders famously missed a three foot
putt at the eighteenth to win, only to tie with Jack
Nicklaus and lose the resulting play off.
When the lads were younger I took them to the
Open on a number of occasions if it was not too far
away. This year however it was at Royal Troon and,
although I played the course many years ago with
the late Bert Wolff whilst on a golfing holiday in
Scotland, I wouldn’t really have entertained the idea
of driving that far to watch golf at my time of life.
However, as Tim offered not only to take me but
also to pay for our accommodation, I became quite
enthusiastic about the idea and decided to go with
him. I must say I really enjoyed our time in
Scotland, so much so that we may go to next year’s
Open when it’s much nearer at Birkdale.
Watching the top players and in particular
seeing such antics as Rory McIlroy throwing and
breaking his club in frustration brought back the
memories of my own golfing experiences, albeit in
the somewhat lesser arenas of Ashbourne and
Whiston. At the latter venue I had some great times
with loads of different personalities. The
Committee in the seventies consisted of myself,
Dave Bassett, Fred Wright, Bert Wolff, Peter
Simcock and a few others. Playing with some of
those guys was pure enjoyment and we used to have
loads of laughs over some of the experiences. I’m
sure the Editor won’t mind me mentioning Frank
Titterton, who was a hilariously funny man.
Whenever I played with Frank, we could barely get
round the course for laughing at Frank’s jokes and
some of the ridiculous situation we found ourselves
or our golfballs in.
Some of my above former golfing colleagues are
sadly no longer with us now, but their memories live
on in mine and I’m sure in many others’ minds.
Mentioning the name Doug Sanders above leads
me to note that I umpired one Sunday recently with
another of that name, Mick Sanders, who football
enthusiasts will know is also the Chairman of the
Coors Sunday Football League. We spoke of an
incident in a cup final at the old Universal Grinding
Wheel ground in Stafford about thirty five years
ago in which both Mick and myself were playing.
I remember it very well indeed because it was the
only occasion in my career that I was sent off. Mick
was good enough to realise that I had been hard
done to and, never being short of something to say,
offered to speak in my defence at the Staffs F.A.
disciplinary hearing. We remembered that the
hearing was chaired by Arthur McPherson, whose
son Neil I happened to work with and who had
previously had a word with his dad. Mick spoke
well as usual and knowing Neil helped. I got away
with a fortnight and £20 (although that was quite
a sum in those days). The suspension was perhaps
the harder burden to bear.
I suppose for the remainder of the season my
umpiring will be confined to Sundays in the Stone
and District League as I anticipate watching
football on Saturdays. In that League it is
interesting to note the number of Asian players
who, because of work commitments on Saturdays,
play their cricket on Sundays. There are a few teams
comprising entirely, or almost entirely Asian players
and I think they have brought a certain enthusiasm
to the local game which may have been lacking
hitherto. There are quite a few very good players
among their ranks and they play the game with a
very positive attitude. Although they may dispute
every decision, I find that they invariably accept the
outcome, be it favourable or otherwise, which I’m
afraid cannot be said of all our home grown
players.
Playing against Checkley recently were Bignall
End – a team that consisted of ten Asians and Dave
Quinton, who many local cricketers will know as a
prolific second team wicket taker. I played many
times with Dave on Sundays but there was one
Saturday league record he broke a couple of seasons
ago by bowling an astonishing 44 overs in a second
innings. When I saw it on the league website I
thought it must be a mistake and the total number
of overs bowled had been 44, so I rang him.
Incredible as it may seem, the team had bowled 92
overs before dismissing their opponents and Dave
had not even bowled unchanged ! It’s a record that
I don’t think will easily be broken and I’m just glad
I wasn’t umpiring that game.
As for Checkley and it is good to see Ben
Johnson heavily involved there. I also came across
Ian Stewart, who not only umpires on Saturdays
but also plays on Sundays. Ian is now in the veteran
stage as a player but he has been a great servant for
many years and is one of those people who is a
stalwart member of a cricket club. I note that he
presently wears the “Chairman’s Cap” when
playing, a distinction that I am sure is well deserved.
From the manner in which he encourages the
younger players I hope that Ian goes on playing for
a few more years yet.
By the time this edition is published, cricket will
be nearing its close again, the football season will
be well underway and I’m sure I will have met a few
more characters I can write about.

On the Oche

Life President of the Uttoxeter and District Darts League.
I
have got to mention what a remarkable young
man Adam Peaty is! There he was standing on
the podium – Olympic Champion with his gold
medal 100m breaststroke held in his hand, singing
the National Anthem at the top of his voice, proud
of his country, proud of his Queen and the Union
Jack!
Then he said it was an absolute honour to be
racing for one of the best countries in the world...
Uttoxeter and the whole of the country is proud
of you Adam, after all, not only Olympic
Champion on top of three World Titles, eight
European and two Commonwealth titles, plus five
World records.
Nan Mavis said you are like a gladiator, she’s
not wrong! You are indeed the main man, then
Adam went on to help his team mates in the
medley race, winning a Silver Medal!
The Uttoxeter Ladies Darts League this coming
season will be without a lovely lady from
Marchington, Mary Maxwell, who passed away
recently.
The League was formed in the early 1970’s and
she was a founder dart player upto the present day.
Mary was over the moon on an occasion when she
won the Ladies Doubles title with her daughter
Tina. God Bless to you and your family which is a
remarkable achievement – 13 children, 9 boys 4
girls. They must have all been very proud of you
Mary. Rest in Peace.....
The Tean and District Summer League is now
coming to the end of the season with me playing
yet again for The Black Swan, Uttoxeter,
and yet again the lads are heading for
the League Championships.
Being ill at the start of the year has
seen me not being at my best on the
oche – in fact I have had an operation
recently to improve my breathing which
will help the condition of my heart.
This is a good time for this to happen because
the day before the World Series starts again Down
Under in Sydney Australia which means I can start
my convalescing watching the darts in TV –
Channel 4 – unlike the World Match Play in
Blackpool which is only on Sky TV.
Touch wood, I will be alright, sincerely hope to
speak to you again.
